The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Kaz looked up at the nearest camera as the child continued to speak. He wasn't exactly speaking like a kid and Kaz was beginning to wonder if he was wrong. Maybe the speaker wasn't a child at all, just someone with a very young voice. Kaz had a tendency to call everyone under 18 a kid, and technically by law, it was true, they weren't adults until they turned 18, but it still seemed somewhat condescending and insulting to refer to them as 'Kid'.
”Sure kid, that sounds like a great deal. Hand over 10 trillion dollars, and you can have this place. How does that sound? Good, yes. Let's shake on it.”
There was no way the warehouse was worth that much, nor did he ever expect the kid, or whoever the kid's 'people' were, to pay the price. Kaz would not hand over HIS warehouse, if the kid didn't relent and give up... Kaz didn't hurt kids, usually, but the kid would survive a few broken bones.
It wasn't until Kaz began blinking his eyes more than normal and felt a slight itch in his throat that he realized something was up. He was already partway up the stairs to the third/fourth floor when he felt his eyes really begin to water and he began coughing. Jumping over the railing onto the floor Kaz forced his senses down to a normal level trying to hold off what he knew was coming. Most people wouldn't have been affected by the concentration of tear gas in the air, but he was. If he didn't suppress his body's reaction, stop the gas, or get some protection on, by the time a human would be begin to show the symptoms he was showing, he'd be completely incapacitated.
Kaz headed towards the armory as fast as he could manage, which wasn't nearly as fast as he normally could, his eyes were too watery, he felt his skin burning a bit, coughs were racking his body and his nose was streaming. When he reached it, Kaz didn't even both with the access card for the outer door, he smashed his hand through the lock and opened it from inside the door. Slipping inside he slammed the door shut and crimped the steel together sealing it shut again before grabbing his key ring and unlocking the manual locks on the inner door. The armory had a completely separate ventilation system which was not hooked up to defenses, nor were there any automated offensive weapons inside it. There were too many things that could be harmed or damaged or exploded in there if they were exposed or punctured or anything else.
Leaning heavily against one of the steel tables he pulled out a bucket and vomited, violently. 'God I hate that stuff.' He thought to himself as he pulled out a first aid bag, swished some water around his mouth and spit it out. With a different bottle he forced his eyes open and poured water over them, rinsing them out as best he could. There wasn't anything he could do about his skin, it had progressed from a slight burn to feeling like he had been lightly roasted.

Kalli was pleased at the child's new position, it was much easier to have her way while he lay prone. Standing on his chest she proceeded to rub her face all over his, nuzzling his neck with her head while her mouth was slightly open and her teeth lightly touched his flesh. She even went so far as to lick his nose a few times. He hadn't seemed to get that he was suppose to pet her but she made due. The little one was surprisingly warm and she found herself laying down on his everything because he was so small. Warm and content having claimed something new for herself, she lay atop the boy, purring heavily, mouth slightly open, tongue poking out fractionally between her fangs.
~~~~~
Kaz felt like he had been in the room for quite some time, and it might have been. He realized that he might be stalling, hesitating. 'Why?' He asked his gassed brain. 'You weren't even sure if you wanted to come back here when you arrived. There's nothing holding you here, you can build another one, a better one probably.' Kaz looked at the nearest camera inside the armory, his face, while still a mess, looked on the edge of furious and resigned. 'Find out who finances the kid, make some money. Just give the place to him.'”No.” And Kaz realized why he was so annoyed. If the kid had come in, played around, offered to buy the place, or even if he didn't do that and just wouldn't leave, Kaz could have, and probably would have, been fine with it, maybe even sold it to him. But he had taken it from Kaz, then denied him and was now using it against him.
Reaching for the gas-mask, reinforced riot shield, sawed off 10 gauge shot gun, a rapier, and a desert eagle, ”Kid there are three ways this ends: You give up peacefully and you don't get hurt; I take your head off in some brutal way; Or,” Kaz moved and set the timer, an analog timer, on the explosives inside the building, ”We all blow up and this place becomes a crater.” The explosives may or may not be a bluff. Kaz wasn't even sure if they still worked or if they were still hooked up after all the renovations that had happened. For all Kaz knew, rats had somehow gotten to the wires and eaten them and nothing would happen. They had been installed early on in case their place had been found and they needed to get rid of any evidence fast.
Kaz stopped inside the warehouse when he heard a voice over the intercom. He realized five things at that moment: There was someone in his warehouse; They had control of it; It was a kid (at least it sounded like a kid); They had claimed his warehouse as their home; And they had just pointed his own weapons at him.
If Kaz was a teapot, he'd be steaming and whistling. Instead Kaz changed his hands back to their normal size, ”Kid. This is MY place, these are MY things.” Kaz made his skin thicker and denser, knowing the damage the weapons aimed at him could cause, ”I will break whatever I feel like, including you, if you don't stop right now.” He was going to need to be fast, ”And if you hurt my cat. I'll. Kill. You.”
~~~~~
Kalli was oblivious to what was going on between Kaz and this new person, or just didn't care. The boy didn't put his hand out to her when she swatted him. Kalli looked at him, a slight rumble in her chest, then she move past him trying to push her weight against his leg. Circling around, she did the same to his other leg. Back in front of him, he stared at him again. She felt a little itch on the top of her head near her ear, she wanted it scratched, and he was being a bad minion. At this rate she was going to have to stand on her hind paws, put her front paws on his shoulders and press her face into his chin to get that itch scratched. She purred some more in an attempt to get the young one to understand.
~~~~~
None of the weapons had gone off yet, so maybe the kid had listened. He would have normally gone to the lift shaft, but he did not feel comfortable with that idea. Kaz didn't move quickly, he didn't want to startle the kid into reacting, but he wasn't going to just stand there and let the kid dictate what he did or didn't do. So he began moving towards the spiral staircase, the Jacob’s Ladder had been disabled when he and Kalli had moved in. Even though he had fitted her with a tag that would disable any of the Warehouse's defenses if they were in or would aim in the area she was at, leaving the stairs to be electrified worried him.
Someone was in the building, someone that shouldn't be there, someone who smelled strange.
Kalli had been lounging on the stone of the fireplace when someone exited the lift. It was beneath her to move and greet whoever it was, unless she felt like it, and she didn't. Ears twitching at the sounds the person made, she opened one eye as the sounds got closer. She smelled him before he came into view, and it was not right, it wasn't a scent she had encountered before. Kaz's scent was in the building, but it was old, and he wasn't with the new scent. Lifting herself to her feet she moved away from her spot to see who it was. The person was very small, it was definitely not her person. Her ears moved around trying to catch any sound of her person. He moved wrong, almost lumbering. Kalli hopped onto the nearest couch then onto it's back and stared at the boy who should not be there.
When the camera began moving, something it didn't normally do, Kalli's attention snapped to it, her eyes following it's side to side, up and down motions for some time before she lay down atop the couch to continue watching the boy. He hadn't done anything wrong, hadn't made any quick movements, or any sudden sounds that would startle her, but he hadn't offered her proper respect either. He was still over there...not petting her. If he offered her treats, she could forgive him, but he wasn't, so she stared and showed her displeasure, purring softly. She would wait for a little longer, if he didn't come to her, she would go to him, and swat at him, lightly, on the leg, without claws because she's a well behaved host. She would teach him, and she would be pet, even if she had to sit on his face to accomplish it.
Kaz had no idea what had happened to his Warehouse, he had no idea there was someone inside, had no idea that that someone had taken control of all of his security.
Having been out at the Corydon Estates checking with the Sentinels and their latest report on activity in the area, as well as going over the finances and background checks for the latest applicants to see who needed help buying a house. There were a number of mutants looking to buy a house who could not get loans or find sellers willing to sell to them even if they had been approved for the loan. It irritated him that his people were being denied those simple things just because they were mutants.
After dealing with all of that, which he really wasn't well suited for, all he wanted to do was go home, have a few drinks, and relax, maybe watch a movie in the theater. When he pulled up to the back door and tried to open it with his tablet, he looked at it stupidly for a few moments when it told him his access was invalid. ”What the hell?” Maybe he did something wrong, maybe it needed to be restarted. So he tried again. When it failed again, he restarted the tablet, and tried once more. When the third time failed, he got out of the Hummer and tried to open the back door manually. The jolt of electricity when he touched the handle launched him backwards and set his nerves on fire. Spikes rose from the ground under the Hummer, impaling the wheels before they were secured by clamps. Kaz was not happy at that, he had just had it fixed up.
He wasn't going to try opening the large door, knowing he'd get the same jolt as he had from the small one, instead he went around to the front and tried it. Kaz stared dumbfounded as all scanners denied him access. 'How..what...' Kaz couldn't even think of what happened. If someone had broken in, while the place had power, and it obviously did, he would have been alerted. If they had managed to survive and get into the security room, it would have been locked down and they would have been locked out of the system, and he would have been alerted. Even if someone had walked through the walls of his Warehouse, and taken it over, the encryption should have taken long enough for him to be notified, if nothing else.
Kaz stepped back from the building, to the other side of the street. He could see cameras places around the area, not nearly as many as inside his Warehouse, but enough to be able to track someone passing through the neighborhood. Seeing the fire escapes, or at least what was left of them, he thought for a moment about trying the doors at the top of them, but only for a moment, remembering they were false doors that didn't open. He could get to the roof and try the door up there, but even if it was only partially repaired, the security on it should still work. He did not want to get shocked again, he hated the numbness, the phantom-fire pain. He sighed as he looked at the walls, yes he could go through them, but that would take quite some time, and make a lot of noise.
Kaz realized then that he had never really given though of how to break into the place, hadn't entertained what it would be like if someone had control of his Warehouse and he wasn't already inside. ”This blows.” Kaz returned to the rear of the building, tore the Hummer free, losing the wheels in the process, and proceeded to use it as a battering ram against the large steel door. Once he had made a small hole, he tore the rubber from the rims, enlarged his arms and fists before wrapping them in the rubber, and proceeded to tear the hole wide enough to step through. He didn't know how much of his security was active, so he'd have to be ready to deal with whatever happened once he was through.
I'm curious about something. How does Ambrose balance the anarchy of Ragnarok and running a business (since businesses are rather orderly things)? Does he really want to destroy what he created?
”Maybe that's it.” Kaz said in response to Aura being on tv. As they walked down the halls Kaz kept his senses alert as he scanned his surroundings. From what he could see, the Sanctuary hadn't changed much, if at all. He wasn't sure what he expected, a new coat of paint on the walls, change the color scheme one a decade maybe. He was able to make out voices and sounds echoing faintly throughout the halls and rooms they passed, if he focused on them he could make out what they were saying clearly, but he wasn't here to snoop on the residents.
”Well, six months is longer than me. I've been out of the country for the better part of six years. I just returned less than two weeks ago.” Kaz wasn't going to get into many details unless he really had to, in private, but out in the halls, he'd only talk small-talk. ”Japan huh.” Kaz couldn't quite pin down Aura's tone when she mentioned Japan, had it been a good trip or a bad one? Personal or business? Kaz guessed personal. ”Interesting country, a little odd in some ways, more fun in others. Learned to make my own katana there.”
Once through the doors he immediately noticed the large robot and skunk. The skunk was an odd thing to see in Sanctuary, but Aura seemed more intent on what Kaz guessed were her possessions, so the skunk must be a normal thing. Even still, Kaz kept the animal's position in mind as he moved around the training room. The robot was the obvious danger in the room, besides the two mutants, it seemed to be collecting iron balls of some sort. Big ones, like, ”Cannon balls?” Kaz said a bit surprised, but quietly.
Kaz looked towards Aura's things and noticed the katana among them, ”Yours? Would you mind if I...?” He said as he gestured towards the sword. Kaz moved to where her stuff lay, appearing there almost as if he hadn't physically moved, only the light falling of his hair as it settled back into place spoke otherwise. Picking up the scabbard he examined the handle and braid before pulling the blade out. The blade came out smoothly, his motions that of someone who respected such tools and knew their value. He noticed the letters 'Xi' and assumed it was either the craftsman’s name or the sword's. Kaz had no need to test the blade physically to know it was keen. ”It's beautifully made. Handcrafted, not pressed. Very nice.” Kaz knew quality work when he saw it. Knowing the blade was Aura's gave her a notch in her favor.
Putting the katana back in its scabbard and setting it down gently, Kaz turned to the young woman. ”To be completely honest, I came here because I figured if anyone knew what was going on in this city, it's recent history, or if there were any issues to be aware of, the Order would know, and be straight about it. And not, ya know, paint some rosy picture of it, brush it under the rug, or downplay it, like the X's would probably do.”
He figured she'd want to know why before she would answer anything, or maybe that she would need to know so that her answers, if she had any, would be relevant to him. ”I came back to publicly announce the housing community I've had built here in New York. A community just for mutant, built by mutants, secured and protected by mutants.” He made sure to look her in the eyes, voice calm and cool. ”I need to know what opposition I might have to that, so I'll know what I need to..deal with. And to find out if any of my old Order comrades might be willing to help, if need be.”
Kaz didn't have long to wait before a young woman approached him and he stood up to meet her. She was young, older than 18 most likely, but Kaz would be surprised if she were legally able to drink, that that the law ever stopped him or anyone else in the Order. Her slender frame belied the strength she projected, her movements were confident, controlled, and even before her aura surrounded her, he could tell she was dangerous. Every member of the Order was dangerous in their own way, but if someone took her at face value and underestimated her, he was sure they wouldn't have long to regret it.
He didn't know what that aura of hers could do exactly, but he was sure putting himself in direct contact with it would be to his disadvantage, so he held out his hand to her and kept his eyes on hers, ”Kaz Corydon” He said with a real smile. ”A pleasure to meet you Aura. Lisa is correct, as always.” He tilted his head just a bit as both of his eyes squinted a hair, ”Have we met before? You look..familiar.”
Kaz looked Aura over again and took a conscious breath through his nose. ”I'm sorry if my being here has interrupted your workout. I'd be happy to offer my assistance as an apology, if you'd like.” Kaz gave Aura a slight bow, ”I think the Training Room would be private enough. I'm hoping you could answer a few questions I have.”
Kaz had been putting it off for a while, but he had finally gotten himself convinced to go to Sanctuary. He tried not to be hopeful about what or who he would find, or to concern himself with how they would react. He wasn't looking for a fight, to live there, or to rejoin the Order. His motivations were less thought based and more gut feeling, and there was a chance he was feeling somewhat lonely and maybe a bit lost.
As Kaz climbed the steps up to the large doors he tried to decide if he should stay in his altered form or revert back to his normal self. The doors were swinging open as he was still deciding, his legs carrying him forward confidently, though he didn't feel it as much as he showed. Half way across the floor Kaz finally made up his mind as his wings receded into his body, face returned to normal, bones and muscles returned to their original state, and the sound of tapping claws with each step became soft sounds of human feet barely audible despite his weight.
Kaz had no doubt that the woman at the desk had taken notice of him the instant the doors had opened, but she hadn't turned from her screen and work until he had moved within 15ft of her at which point she turned slowly, a smile on her face, like always, to face him fully. “Kaz, welcome back.” Kaz felt a chill run down his spine and he stopped well out of reach of the woman, even if she lunged at him. There was nothing obviously malicious, or unhappy, or angry, or anything else in her smile and tone, nothing that should cause him to have such a reaction, but he did. Lisa's words could as easily been an honest greeting or a death threat and he had no way to tell except to keep going.
Even though the woman, who as far as he knew was most likely, most probably human, maybe, could have just sentenced him to death, he had to admit, there was a part of him that was glad to see her. She was the one thing that didn't change it seemed, sure she looked a little older, but she was still there, sitting behind that desk, doing who knows what all the time, but she kept everything in order, he knew that. Without her, he knew, knew it in his gut, that there would be no Sanctuary, no Order.
”Lisa, it's good to see you. Is anyone around?” It was obvious that 'anyone' meant 'Order members', and they both knew it, ”I have some time, to wait if necessary.” For a moment Kaz wasn't sure what would happen since Lisa hadn't made any movements, except her smile, it seemed to thin almost imperceptibly. Then he noticed her eyes, they had just checked him out, not in any sort of sexual way, but as if looking at him and cataloging everything about him from his dress, to posture, cleanliness, hair style, to...to...everything. It was almost disturbing, and would have been, if he hadn't known the woman, he had just forgotten about how detailed and meticulous she was about everything.
It wasn't until he looked down at himself that he realized he was still shirtless and that his hair was windblown. ”Oh...right.” Kaz pulled out a tight fitting sleeveless shirt from the small pack he had on his waist and pulled it on before running his fingers through his hair. He might have imagined it, but he thought he saw the slightest hint of approval from her. ”Have a seat Mr. Corydon. I'll see what I can do.” Lisa said as she motioned to one of the chairs in the foyer. Tilting his head slightly he nodded to her and sat down and waited.
Kaz went a fair distance away from Sanctuary before he changed course, without having any place in mind. The sunlight had filled the land while he had been watching the Sanctuary, so he was no longer mostly invisible to those below him. He could see the shadow he cast as he soared through the sky, could see the few people who noticed look up. Kaz was somewhat surprised to see a few shocked and stunned faces from those that saw him. 'Really? With all the mutants running around and causing general mayhem on a semi-regular basis, you people really shouldn't be surprised about a flying man.'
Seeing things from a literal bird's eye view could be a bit disorienting and throw navigation off. As such he had already passed by the area where Full Circle was located. When he realized where he was he began a slow, circular decent until he was flying just a little above the power lines and street lamps. He perched atop one of the street lamps a half block from the bookstore, ignoring the humans below him. Even though it was still early in the morning, he expected to see some people entering or leaving the building, not because they wanted to buy a book, but they had coffee and it wasn't too bad. As he watched, he saw no one enter or leave and it seemed very odd to him. He began to think that maybe Vega had sold it, that it wasn't the Full Circle he remembered and helped finance, but he saw the name of the place clearly and he could make out the books inside. The lights were out and it gave Kaz the sense of...loneliness, of disuse, much like his Warehouse did, but without the obvious damage his place had sustained.
Kaz didn't like it. Did not like the look of the place. Did not like the vibe was getting. Didn't like the twist in his gut. He was probably just letting his paranoia get to him, but Kaz wanted to find out for himself. Dropping to the ground, absorbing the impact with almost no perceivable effort, then headed towards Full Circle, his wings folded around his shoulders like a cloak, something he had picked up when he had seen from an old episode of Gargoyles.
His pace was steady but quick, eating up the distance to the store. The closer he got the more details he could pick out without making the effort it took to see long distances clearly. Full Circle was definitely not being used, or couldn't be used would be more correct. It was clearly barred and locked, from the outside with some heavy duty, non-standard lock. 'I can't think of anywhere besides some big, fancy, industrial place locked up like this, so why would.... Did the police have something to do with this?' Kaz definitely needed, wanted, to find out what happened. He'd have to find Vega at some point. Or..'I could just..go in, not like this can stop me..' Kaz's clawed hand closed around the lock and bar, but he didn't tear them off. He stayed like that for long moments before letting go and turning away.
Walking into the open street, clear of anything above him, Kaz pursed his lips and looked back at the store. With little effort he exploded into the air, wings swept back along his body as he rocketed straight up. Once he reached the apex of his jump he unfurled his wings, caught air and started moving away. He hadn't jumped to a ridiculous height, but it was sufficient for his needs. A few blocks away Kaz did a double-take when he saw a somewhat rundown sign that clearly said Iris, though he couldn't quite make out what the rest of it said. If he were anywhere else when he saw that, he probably wouldn't think anything of it, but being this close to Full Circle, which was run, or had been run, by Vega, who lived at the Mansion, as far as he knew, and who had a good chance of knowing Iris...It couldn't be a coincidence. Kaz felt a little sick.
All of a sudden Kaz didn't feel like heading to the Mansion, he still would, probably, eventually, had to, since that was the best place to look for Vega and find out where she was or how to get in contact with her. Just not at the moment.
Kaz had no destination in mind when he lept from the balcony, but he wanted to get out, to feel the wind in his hair and wings, to see the city he had been away from for so long. From his vantage point above the tallest buildings, his enhanced eyesight could easily pick out individual faces of those on the ground, but when he looked around at sprawling city beneath him as a whole, it looked exactly the same as when he had least seen it leaving for Romania. 'Some things change' He thought as he looked in the direction of his Warehouse and then around the city, 'Other things...stay the same, as if you didn't exist in the first place.'
His meandering flight took him all over the city, though he seemed to stay longest in areas he had a connection to. Kaz had hovered near the sanctuary for some time before finding a place to land on, a small, thin 'ledge' running along the outer wall of a building with a clear, unobstructed view of the place. The ledge was just wide enough to stand on if he pressed himself against the wall, but Kaz slid down into a crouch and latching onto the wall with one clawed hand, digging fingers into it while his wings were held out to catch the wind and press his form against the wall.
For a time all he did was watch, seeing a few people go into and out of the Sanctuary, but he didn't recognize any of their faces. He began to imagine what would happen if he dropped in on Sanctuary, literally, and who he would draw out. He was sure the Order would show up quite fast, it would be great to see Abyss again, his sister...he could live without seeing her. It wasn't that he disliked Syn exactly, but the two of them always seemed to butt heads in the past. If the Twins were around, he didn't think he'd be able to hold himself back from hugging the two redheads, though he was sure they weren't. Isabel was...She didn't seem to be too happy with him the last time they had seen and spoke to each other. Did she really hate him for leaving the Order? Probably. Kaz imagined her gutting him just for that, if nothing else. 'Who else...?' Kaz found he was at a loss, he really had no new information, he knew there had been a few new people around the time he had left, but his memory failed him. He began standing to do what he had thought of, but before he let go and dropped down, a face flashed into his head. Lisa. Kaz stopped in his tracks. ”Dropping in and pissing Lisa off would not be a good idea.”
Instead of heading towards the Sanctuary, Kaz flew off in a different direction, Lisa's unimpressed, irritated, cool face following him in his mind's eye.
Kaz woke early in the morning, just as the barest hint of light began to touch the visible sky, though most people wouldn't have been able to notice it. Even to his heightened senses, it wasn't bright enough to wake him, not by itself that is. Kaz tried to suppress the yawn he felt growing, and succeeded for a short time, but he eventually lost the battle to a mighty yawn that threatened to take his jaw off. When it ended he felt tears squeeze out from the corners of his eyes. They began to roll down the sides of his head as he blinked a few times, before finally wiping them away and rubbing his eyes to clear them. Stretching took him next, though only an upper body stretch that he held for quite some time as a final yawn took him. Kaz shook his head vigorously, blinking rapidly, and moved to free himself from the sheets, only to find his legs pinned under Kalli's weight. The cat was sound asleep, making the feline equivalent of snoring sounds. Gently Kaz moved his hands under her and lifted her up as he slid his legs free and standing up before he set her down in the spot he had just vacated. Kalli moved around a little bit, flipped over to her other side, curled up again and lay still. He gave her the lightest of pets on her head, with just a little more pressure on her forehead between her eyes before moving away.
Wearing just a pair of loose cotton pants, Kaz moved into the living room, completely devoid of anything that would normally be in such a room. Once in the center of the spacious are Kaz began to stretch and warm up before moving into the basic forms of one martial style and then another. He began slowly, every movement slow, painfully slow, exacting in its precision. Ever so slightly he began to pick up the pace, moving from the speed at which tar drips to molasses in winter, to the speed of road construction, each increase was deliberate, timed, and fluid. Eventually after more than an hour had passed, his speed of his movements had far surpassed a human beings physical limits, and yet he didn't loose any of his precision or miss a beat. Due to the blinding, disorienting speeds at which he moved, it seemed as if his arms and legs had replaced by wispy, translucent, ghost like apparitions while his torso seemed to bend in unnatural ways, twisting impossibly small. Of course it wasn't. If the human mind was capable of following his movements, their eyes certainly weren't, only able to catch snapshots of poorly focused images.
Kaz continued the movements at that speed for half an hour before he started slowing down at the same rate he had increased it. When he finally completed the final movement he stood stock still, his chest barely moving more than it would while he slept, pulse only slightly elevated, his skin showing just the faintest hints that he were going to, or maybe just had, barely, broken a sweat. Kaz took a controlled, deep breath, letting it slowly as he relaxed the muscles in his body. When he opened his eyes he was looking into Kalli's eyes as she perched on the counter that separated the living room from the kitchen.
Kaz froze locking eyes with the 'feline'. This wasn't the first time that she had done something similar, not that what she was doing was uncharacteristic of many animals, especially cats, but there were times Kaz just could not shake the feeling there was more going on behind those eyes than there should be for a simple animal. If it were a chimp or gorilla looking at him the way Kalli was, it wouldn't trigger the itch at the back of his head. He knew they were intelligent, not human level intellect, but they weren't simple animals, more like, children, young children. The only animal that made Kaz's skull itch inside as much as cat, were crows or ravens, or whatever they were, if they were different at all. He had seen them do some very, very strange things that couldn't be ignored as 'instinct' or 'animal behavior'.
”Ca-” Kaz caught himself before he actually said it. Saying it would be admitting it, and he wasn't willing to do that. ”Kalli...”
The cat didn't move, not a muscle, not a tail twitch, nor an ear swivel. The two of them continued to stare at each other for a few dozen moments more before Kalli all at once changed. She went from being as still as a statue to fully animate, tail moving, ears twitching at everything they heard and eyelids drooping into a lazy, there's-nothing-worthy-of-my-attention look. Kaz eyed her, eyes squinting just a little, before he to animated.
He moved to her and stroked her back while she rubbed her face against his forearm. ”You hungry girl?” Kalli didn't respond with anything more than turning in place so that he was able to scratch her back better. Kaz snorted, 'Heh, yeah, stupid though huh, as if you'd be him this whole time.' Rubbing her head playfully he moved into the kitchen to make sure her food and water dispensers were full, they were. Kaz went into the freezer and pulled out two large pizzas and threw them in the oven without preheating it, not because he was a rebel, but because he was lazy and didn't feel like waiting.
Kaz moved to the bathroom, stripping along the way, throwing the clothes in the hamper before stepping into the shower. The shower didn't have a curtain or door or anything else to block the view if someone were to come in, not that anyone would, or that Kaz would care if someone did. His body was something he was quite proud of.
Partway through the shower Kalli decided to enter the bathroom and pad over to the shower. Kaz watched her slightly amused as she watched the water fall to the floor, then bat at it, before she started swiping at the water as it made its way toward the drain. She seemed to be having fun with her little game and Kaz let it go on for some time until he was almost done. Before shutting the water off, he held his arm out and let the water slide down it to fall onto Kalli. She quite literally flipped out of the room, landing and tearing off somewhere else in the condo. Laughing Kaz toweled off and went to his room to get dressed.
He saw Kalli next to the open window, sun falling over her as she cleaned herself. She saw him and gave him the familiar 'I hate you' look. ”Oh shut up, you love water.” After Kaz got dressed in loose pants and grabbed an easily to remove shirt, he moved toward the balcony and opened the sliding glass door. ”Kalli, don't go tearing up the place, I'm gonna be gone for a while.” After closing the door, he changed into his flight form and dove off the balcony.
Kaz flew over the land using the slight thermals that rose from the ground, long after the sun had gone down, not the he couldn't fly without them, but they made it easier. Ignoring buildings, traffic, and people, Kaz made much better time than he would have in the car. At first he flew somewhat aimlessly over land and the city, but he eventually found himself heading towards the only home he had really known for much of his time in the city, his warehouse.
Before he came within a mile he was able to pick out little things about the building, little things that made him think, 'It looks like crap.' As he got closer that thought grew into a fact. Unlike many similar buildings that were left unattended, or even attended, there were no broken windows, but there was plenty of graffiti all over the place, even on the roof. 'How the hell did they get up there? The answer became apparent the closer he got, there were holes, or indents in the side of the building, and something that looked like a piton for rock climbing. Kaz circled around a few times, noticing as he did that the doors, all of them were dented in many places, some of the walls were blackened by fire, or maybe an explosive.
After landing on the room Kaz tried to open the door but found that, while it had held against repeated beatings, it was stuck shut. “Dammit.” Kaz said as he changed his form again, for more muscle power, dug his claws and fingers into the space between the door and the frame, digging his claws into the roof, he wrenched the door open with a squeal of twisting metal. T'sk-ing, Kaz moved into the building and immediately coughed as dust was kicked up from opening the door. 'I guess no one has been here for some time...' He sighed heavily, feeling a bit disappointed, 'What did you expect, for someone to suddenly show up here and be waiting when you got back? You knew that wouldn't happen, you've known ever since she left. You know she left because of you, you did it, it was your fault, and you don't even know why.'“Shut! Up!” He yelled as he punched the wall shattering the concrete around his fist. “dammit” He said in a low whisper before sighing.
Kaz had expected the alarm to go off when he broke in but he noticed after he had moved into the kitchen that nothing had happened, no alarm, no emergency lights, nothing. He tried to turn the lights on, but they seemed to be dead as well. “Finally fell off the grid?” Kaz made his way to the backup generator and got it running. After a few minutes the emergency lights grew bright enough for normal people to see. The next thing to turn on was the air system, though he could tell from the sound that it wasn't doing much. If it had been running the whole time, until the power went out at least, then it was probably in bad need of maintenance, of which he could only replace the filters. He threw the old dust caked, bug infested filters on the floor, kicking up more of the ever present dust. Running a finger along a surface he displaced a strip of dust a few inches long and at least a quarter of an inch deep, if not half or more. Sighing, “I was hoping this place would have held up better...It would take a lot of work to get this pit back into a livable space again.”
He went through the building checking various things like his cars, various weapons, electronics, clothes and the food. “Oh god that's disgusting!” Of course there wasn't any food left, anything that could be gotten into had been gotten into by mice, rats, and whatever else, but what they couldn't get to, had decomposed nastily. “Guhh...Might be best to just take what can be saved and burn the rest.”
Before heading back to the roof Kaz found himself at his room. He found himself staring into, memories flooding his mind, making it hard to enter the room. Eventually, as the generator was running out of fuel, there apparently hadn't been much in it, he went in and collected a few things and stuffed them into the cleanest bag he could find. When he made it too the roof, he decided he'd send some of his people in to clean the place, though whether he'd use it to live in or not was something to deal with later.
Changing back to the winged form, Kaz took flight to his temporary, for now, residence. He would wait there until Kalli and his things arrived, if they hadn't already, eat, and sleep if he could. If he couldn't, then he'd figure something out.
