The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Oh alright...will remember that next time, I should have been more specific there" Linely acknowledged his error on this point. The dog was fine and was standing still. The wing-beats were getting closer...
>>"Detective Linely...I'm returning to the station and awaiting back up"... At this Linely was annoyed, abandoning a fellow officer due to some minor detail that would rarely have been a problem. Besides, the bats were almost on top of them now. He didn't know what Swartz was playing at. He should have mentioned it before, it had slipped his mind. "Sorry , it slipped my mind..."
Swartz interrupted him by doing something quite logical under the circumstances. He turned and ran. Linely could only follow ...you never abandon a fellow officer...you never abandon a fellow officer...he kept on thinking, only if his life was in immediate and obvious danger.
The entrance to the Sewers...but why was it so dark? He was at first puzzled at this..but then he realised what was causing the lack of light. For Linely could have coped with the telling off from the officer for not telling his fellows an important piece of information, he could even have coped with losing the trust of someone who could have become a good friend. However , this was worse.
The gap of light from the Manhole was no longer present. Shining his flashlight on it, Linely almost swore through sheer exasperation. Metal. Lots of metal. Someone had replaced the Manhole cover...with something bigger and heavier. They were trapped.
Turning towards the bats, "Hey Swartz. I hope you know how to shoot. Bats have nerves right? Right?" the absolute panic in his voice was obvious. He heard the sound of the bats coming closer and closer. He just hoped Swartz had his back on this...
It was rare that PD Linely came to these areas, but sometimes it was necessary. He had just come back from giving some rather bad news to a family. Oddly enough the news that their son had been arrested was comforting, as seeing him at the door-they thought he was dead. In these parts getting a police officer at the door was never a good thing. Peering eyes and shut doors were very common.
So through the dark alley he went-it was quicker to go home this way. He walked carefully , stridently, a clear air of "don't mess with me" was necessary in places like these. Most of the gangs knew not to attack a lone cop-just in case they were a mutant. But some were less clever and experienced.
Then a gang of youths advancing upon a rather frightened looking young man. Linely heard one thing that made his blood go cold. "It's not the money we want kid"...time to snap into action. The first blow had already been struck, a fist colliding with the poor young man's face.
He saw a gun on one of them. That would be his first target. They weren't focusing on looking out for others either. Arrogant idiots. The first -and last thing his target heard was the rush of wind from Linely's overcoat, and the impact of a police baton to the face.
The other 4 were looking at him now, one of them was cursing over and over again. "I suggest you leave now, before I take out the rest of you" Linely coldly threatened them as he prized the gun their compatriot had, and aimed it at them. "I should mention that I'm not that good a shooter, so the likelyhood is if I try not to kill you with it, I might end up doing so."
He was already reaching out to the nerves of the other armed individual, looked like a significant pain in the ribs-enough to knock someone out. "Just so you know that you are way out of your league..."
((OOC Category 8 Pain attack allowance 4/20)) He pulled the pain of the youth to the surface, the youth's face turned pale and then he fell to the floor, unconscious, with a dull thud.
"He did that without laying a finger on him...I think we should run" The cursing youth spoke , between his colorful language. The others that were still standing clearly felt the same way as they turned to run. They were gone in moments.
Linely then turned to the kid they were beating up. He was bloodied, but conscious and alive. "Are you alright there? PD Linely, NYPD MRC, and it seems you've helped me catch a couple of n'er do wells.." He offered a hand to the kid to help him to his feet.
Seeing Sam smirk knowingly at his mentioning of his mutation gave Linely great comfort, it was good to see that he was not the only one that strove to become stronger. The X-man found his powers interesting? Well that was also good to hear, even though the tinge of concern in Sam's eyes gave away that he was still slightly afraid.
Sam turned his attention to the rabid man, and at the mention of "M" Linely gulped. That stuff was really nasty, addiction to conventional drugs was almost pleasant compared to that."M" was nasty stuff , he'd had to clean up people from it before, and it was always messy. Linely felt the air go cold...
Then came a dire warning from Sam, it was going to get dangerous. Getting him out of here was not going to be easy. Better to clear the area , sure a few people would have cancelled flights, but honestly, compared to what an overly-drugged up "M" user could do to them, they'd thank him later. He went onto the radio.
"PD Linely, execute an evacuation order on the airport, we have an "M" user about to go into meltdown , all civilians and unnecessary personnel are to leave the area as quickly as they can." He turned back to Sam.
"You count as necessary personnel now, I seem to remember something about body temperature to do with "M" and you can make things cold, if you have any means of helping us get this guy somewhere he can't do any damage, then that would be good too."
"Even in the open streets these days you have to be careful" Linely replied "On top of the usual gang related crime , highway shootings , robberies, you get these supposedly peaceful mutant protests which almost always end up in riots. Either it's some human or mutant supremacist whack-job, or it's a mutant terror group, or just a fight breaks out that spreads through the entire crowd. That's not even taking into account the solo mutant attacks and rogue META bots arresting people for being mutants rather than committing crime."
In other words, there was always a crisis in New York, Linely had never known any different from it in his service. "We have to work together, as there's always something on. Of course mutants aren't all committing crime, some like ourselves are there to maintain law and order on these streets." It did mean that New York could be more dangerous though, as Linely was bitterly aware.
"You have to remain positive though, there are many people working to make this world a better place, and that is worth fighting for." He smiled slightly at this hopeful thought . "Sorry, I'm sounding like one of those comic-book heroes again."
((OOC , Category 7 pain attack-Allowance used 3.5/20, ))
Linely pulled the pain to the surface. The guy with the knife went down, his muscles writhing and twitching, like he'd just been hit by a taser. The other two focusing on him were big. He could use that.
One of them lumbered towards him arms outstretched and was greeted with a baton to the jaw. A sickening crack later and he was sent reeling. With Linely's attention divided, it was only expected that he would take a hit from behind. The punch hurt. Linely vision swam for a moment, and then he was back on track. He turned to face the man who hit him.
"You like to punch from behind do you?" he shouted angrily from the pain. "Let's see how you like it!" his nerves lashed out at the man. The man seemed to take a phantom blow to to the back of his head, Linely showed no mercy, and while his victim was off balance, struck his left leg , causing the flabby man to keel over, and slam to the floor with a loud, dull thud.
Linely turned to Rachel to see how she was doing. She'd been grappled. The man was trying to hit her, though she'd managed to dodge the first blow. This would be a learning curve for her "Sir, I suggest you look at how your friends are doing" the man was momentarily distracted. "Rachel, pull down HARD on his arm NOW!"-it was simple physics, a tight grip could be used both ways, and following it with another blow to the groin would be the ideal knockout blow. Still , Linely closed in on them, just in case Rachel needed some more...practical help.
The X Man's nostrils flared as he tried to stand, he had to give the man credit, most people weren't trained to withstand such pain. He was now staring down at him, clearly this guy liked to show that he was tough. The fact that there had been deeper pain. Whole body. Linely could have knocked him out entirely, and Sam knew it as well. But that wasn't good for conversation. Sam was afraid-and being proud enough to conceal it. Linely did not flinch at the man staring down at him, but rather maintained a cool , but kindly expression.
"If they hurt me, I can make them feel my pain as well, and everyone has felt pain before. Sometimes it's a childhood memory that I've brought up from what I'm told. Even if I have to make them feel mild indigestion, I will do that. I'm working on extending my abilities to..." He paused for a moment and then changed the subject. This guy didn't want to hear the entire life story of his mutation "and yes it has been useful in apprehending criminals, very useful indeed."
He turned his attention back to the man that was still frothing at the mouth like a dog. "Now what I want to know, is what kind of drugs can make an otherwise normal human being go savage and be able to shatter handcuffs and rabidly charge innocent people? Anything sound familiar to you?"
((OOC, Pain attack-category 5, Spasm is using forced recall to make Cold Steel feel the sensation of a broken bone . Echo allowance used 2.5/10))
"Don't worry, I have no way of taking control of your body, at least, not in the way I think you mean." Linely assured him. Come to think of it, there was some mention of a guy that could shoot eye beams from HR. Was a useful power Linely supposed.
Hmm...it seemed this fellow had awful pain in his left leg from a while back. That would do, not enough to hurt the man significantly, but enough to properly demonstrate his abilities. "You will feel a crippling pain in your left leg-not sure how you managed that, but I can guess..."
He reached out and pulled the pain to the surface, he was going to ache for a while after this one. The echo of the pain hit him, a dull ache rippled through his nerves. He merely flinched slightly at it, and looked to the X man's reaction.
Well this was a slow day, most of the protests had been assigned officers, so Linely was walking through NY, keeping an eye out for any further trouble. So far-not much, the occasional parking ticket offence that he as an MRC detective, couldn't give. At least he was in plainclothes so didn't have to worry about giving directions. 12:30.
Then suddenly call for backup-apparently there was a large crowd fighting and one of the senior officers needed some serious help. They needed more than just Linely, but he would answer the call. "This is PD Joseph Linely-MRC, I am coming-how bad is it?" "Very. Come to location ASAP"-came the reply. "Copy" He replied, this probably meant a full blown riot.
He dashed to the location. Protests were always in roughly the same place, but this one had been predicted to be quite peaceful. Oh boy, mutants and humans fighting everywhere, this was going to be nasty. Fortunately he wasn't in the midst of it and was coming in from behind the two officers (one shouting on a Megaphone) and a META bot-he had to admit, they did look kinda cool, even if they were going rogue.
"PD Linely-MRC" He shouted as he dashed straight to the officers-displaying his badge clearly so the META bot wouldn't misconstrue his intentions. As he got within talking distance, he stopped.
"Boy, you have your hands full don't you? , who am I working with here?" He recognized Officer Morrison of course, a solid field training officer and useful mutation if ever there was one. He didn't recognize the woman, with her dark brown hair and short stature. She was probably a trainee. He offered his hand to greet her.
"Oh I have a car-parked at the precinct of course. But this is New York. We walk everywhere in New York." Rachel clearly hadn't been in a big city before-well this would be a learning curve. At least she'd enjoy the sun.
His assurance clearly hadn't been enough to alleviate her nerves, and she was being somewhat more guarded towards the dark alleys and the people they passed on the street. "Oh-you know, once, maybe twice....a month, I normally have to remind them that I'm a mutant." He smiled at this pun-that was quite a good one.
A few shady looking characters were hanging round the next alley-the precinct was visible, but that's where they always waited. In the alleys. One of them was playing with a knife. Two of them were visible, but Linely knew that there would be more.
Linely stopped walking. "I'm afraid they are going to try it on this time-the precinct is the building up ahead-across the road." It was actually quite a pleasing building, architecturally speaking that is. "You can either dash for the precinct or help me with this, you know what my power is like-my guess is four basic goons, one with a knife. I can defeat these easily on my own."
His talking had attracted their attention. Four guys. Biker Gang. The "knife" was longer than he had expected, didn't look like he knew how to use it though. The others were unarmed, and they looked more flabby than strong. "Are you guys really going to do this?" Linely drew his baton. "I shall be forced to arrest you if that's the case".
"That's a pretty girl you have with you there-new intern?" the man with the machete said, clear New Yorker accent-and a tone that gave away his intentions at once. "With respect, my business is private." Linely reached out into the speaker's nervous system, hmm, there was that rather nasty pain in the bloke's spine. That would be enough to deal with him.
"Well Rachel-lesson number one it seems." Linely joked, as he prepared to defend himself.
The joke had gone down well-fantastic. "No they aren't really too much trouble, you do have to keep shepherding them though" another bad pun. Still he hoped he was making a good impression. "You don't have to call me "sir" by the way, Joseph is fine until you're working in the NYPD "
The ionized gas around her hand was warm, but seemed to be well controlled-rather flammable though, fortunately -he didn't smoke. "Quite, New York is big, and with plenty to deal with. If it's not the rogue META bots, it's some crazed mutant declaring himself to be the one true genus and proceeding to murder as many non mutants as he can get his hands upon." So they needed as many hands on board as they could get. Especially mutants.
His English accent was comforting to her, good to know -though he'd been around for a few years. "It can be quite confusing explaining to some people that you're from the original Boston and not Boston, Massachusetts, but generally people fit right in, we need everyone to work together.Particularly when you don't know when the crisis is going to happen."
So, having been told to be at some speech from a big shot for "crowd control" , Linely was once again finding himself relatively bored. The guy was rabbiting on about how Mutants were seen as "less than human" and how they all had to get their own country. What next? Was he going to build a wall between the mutants and non-mutants that the non-mutants would pay for?
He liked other mutants, he wanted to protect those who didn't break the law, he realised that they needed better protections from non-mutants. This so called "Utopia" was just that , a land of nowhere. Just some dogooder politician that would promise the world and fail to deliver.
His name-Ambrose Jaager-was big enough to warrant police protection though, so he deserved that credit at least. Linely merely looked menacing and made sure this heavily whipped up crowd stayed in check. Yeah, Jaager had got them fired up, a real rabble rouser. It was plainclothes today, but the fact that he was with a bunch of boys in blue proved that he was an officer. They had a less inspirational speaker now, so the crowd was dispersing nicely.
Spasm laughed heartily at the suggestion of eye beams "Isn't that in a movie somewhere? I suppose there's someone with practical invincibility and titanium spurs caught in a love triangle between me and a reality manipulator as well..."the plausible deniability those movies gave the authorities was rather useful, he had to admit.
"No , my power isn't that" He looked around for someone willing and not arrested, then just turned back to Johnson. "Are you OK with me demonstrating on yourself? I must warn you, it will hurt" He stretched out with his mind. There was pain here, plenty to pull to the service should he get the OK. Would probably be enough to make Mr Johnson pass out if he pulled the correct one to the surface. Probably didn't want to do that though. Maybe a limb would be more appropriate? "I'm ready to demonstrate if you're willing." Spasm said, coldly.
Rachel quickly accepted his offer, at which Linely smiled, mildly grateful that he had more people to help with the protests. Her second response was not surprising at all, that little push had been an act of desperation, rather than performed with any skill. She looked rather embarassed , staring at the floor. " No need to look so embarrassed Rachel, I'll happily teach you some hand to hand combat-though to learn to shoot you'll have to speak to someone else." He responded in a kindly matter-of-fact kind of way.
"Now, follow me. I'm afraid we're walking." With her following, he walked through his lounge, unlocked his apartment floor, and entered the Foyer. The sun was blazing out through the large glass windows. The place was deserted. He descended the stairs without difficulty, daily routine had taught him not to be concerned with the slight creakiness of the 4th stair.
Ground floor. Shaded , sun was still coming out of those areas not blocked by the vegetation from a nearby green space. Hopefully , they could manage to get to the precinct without incident. Hopefully. A couple of guys had followed him home once...that would be a good start for the new intern.
"Do keep an eye out here Rachel...it's not exactly a rough neighborhood, but occasionally a local gang tries it on with me." He told her sternly. "Don't worry, I'm more than capable of defending us both if that happens, think of it as an impromptu first lesson" he smiled at his own humor.
The officers were handcuffing the guy as they spoke, he was still foaming at the mouth , still rambling incoherently. "Your average civilian can't flash freeze an assailant like that" Spasm began, this guy was very sure of his powers...almost too sure.
"What do you mean "sorta"PD" are you on the pay roll for the precinct? This guy was drinking a lot from his flask...who was he to judge though? He had done a better job of taking this individual down than Spasm could have done after all.
"We're not sure who you took down, looks like something really unpleasant is going on in his brain. I couldn't use my power as quickly as I should have been able to on him...that's disturbing in the least of it." He paused briefly and asked "Are you with Xavier's perchance?" That would after all make sense, given the power and the "sorta PD" element of his job...
