The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Joseph couldn't help but smirk as the two men took flight at the sight of the gun. Too bad for them he wasn't actually the best shot in the world. Still, they didn't know that, and given they'd decided to harass a kid, they probably weren't the bravest individuals in the world. As the black man thanked him for his intervention, Linely listened to what he had to say.
So this crime was mutant related? Great, now he was under obligation to investigate and take a witness statement from the man. "Detective Linely, MRC." Joseph stated showing the man his badge. "I'm glad I could be of help, though I'm going to have to ask you to file in a statement at the station as soon as you can. We'll get somebody looking for the girl as well, when we have the time." He placed his badge back in his pocket and holstered his gun. He hadn't even loaded the bloody thing.
"Now that formality is over with, that was a rather brave thing you did. Mr...?" Joseph held out his hand to the man, hoping that this wouldn't be too stressful for the civilian.
"Believe me the kids that think they know everything because they have telepathic powers...honestly if I had a dollar for every stunned look I get when they find that people can train against that stuff, I'd be a rich man" not to mention the number of kids that didn't know their own strength or sometimes found themselves nearly burning down NYC. Joseph gave a hollow laugh. "Then there's your criminal gangs, mutant serial killers, "M" dealers and of course anti-mutant hate groups." Those were the worst, particularly with this new trend of putting a burning wooden helix outside mutants houses and pro-mutant organisations.
"But you also get genuinely powerful kids that need to be trained, it's why we have the X Men. Had one recently that took Fairy-tale adventures to a new level" Thankfully Haven had been able to deal with her effectively. Too much risk of being arrested under the current climate. "We were able to deal with it though."
So he was special forces? That made a lot of sense really, the army took mutants if they could get them. Probably treated them well too. Particularly if they were good in a fight. "I daresay you found that there are mutants on both sides of those wars" Joseph flatly stated, young mutants were as susceptible to radicalization as the next person, if not more so.
"Ah yes, Turner's Donuts? I love those, particularly your custard ones!" Joseph was suddenly rather enthusiastically shouting...then realised how excited he had become. "Sorry, I just really like those, they're much appreciated, really" he spoke in a lower tone. Turner's were a particular favorite at the Church potlucks as well, when Joseph could get some spare from the precinct, which wasn't often.

"Just a trip to the shops" Emily had said. Yeah right, and it had turned into what exactly, walking round NYC,visiting the sites, popping in for a coffee once or twice and then having an evening meal. Good lord she had a way of finding things to do! Still, he was finally able to walk her home and get back for the evening. 9'o clock...great, that was just great. Sure, it was nice to be with Emily for all that time, but he still had work tomorrow!
He would have to take a short cut. He knew the back alleys around here like the back of his hand. He'd either chased a criminal, met a criminal or shot a criminal down one of these streets. The shadows of this street were not too long, meant there was little place to hide, even on a night with a new moon. The fact that it was summer was telling though, which allowed Linely to see in front of him, even as the sun was setting.
A bright light burst through the darkness. A teen girl's glowing eyes, she was running pretty fast. Out of breath. She clearly wasn't stopping for anyone as she promptly pushed past the officer. He could only hope the girl was ok, there were more than a few ne'er do wells that would do highly unpleasant things to a lone young mutant.
Then came the sounds of a fight, complete with rather colorful language that would not be appropriate in front of a police officer. Three men came into view, just as a rather muscular man kicked a smaller guy, and landed a punch on the second one. They reeled from the strikes, but got back up and lunged at the muscular black man. Was this gonna be a non-mutant related hate crime to stop for once? Linely could only guess at it, looking at the two skinheaded men...
"If you don't mind me saying, dear fellows. This doesn't look like a fair fight." Linely tried to sound as painfully British as he positively could. "I suggest you two run before you make yourselves look like idiots, I mean more than you already have done." He pulled out his gun, sometimes the threat was more effective than the execution.
Joseph chuckled at Henry's remark. The "Big Man" had a habit of meeting people in the most unexpected of places. Sometimes He even chose to meet people in Churches. "All the same, it is good that you were led here", Joseph remarked. The minister was likely busy with things, the shuffling of books was almost audible from his office. Clearly the women's group was going to take more time than first expected. Understandable, Rebecca (a grad-student) in particular had a habit of asking lots and lots of questions about different aspects of theology.
So he wanted to talk about "troubles" did he? It might be difficult for him to understand was Joseph's first thought. Most civilians didn't get what it was like to be on the front lines, to fear for your life, to potentially be a target for some gang or individual that took exception to the people you testified against in court. This concern was assuaged as soon as Henry took Joseph's hand and shook it. It was a very firm grip, with that all too familiar mark of a man who knew how to use a gun. More still, Linely could feel the many times Henry had fired that gun, the shock of the recoil on his hand when firing a sidearm, or what Joseph assumed to be so. The memory of the first time never faded.
"Police, more precisely a Detective. Mutant Related Crimes, lots of shooting, lots of people trying it on with their mutations. Part of the reason why I'm seeing the Minister today." The assumption of Military could only mean one thing. "Which Military division did you serve in?" This was probably the easiest question to go for, rather than where the man had served. Linely had spoken to enough veterans to know that being able to detect pain was both a blessing and a curse.
The footsteps that approached were calm, but with the clear heavy-set sound of a boot. Not the minister or one of the interns then. This was somebody new. Maybe they were hoping to visit the Church? The sign on the door had introduced people to them before, though one thing was for sure, evangelism needed to be improved, at least with non-students. Or maybe the individual was like him? There was far too much going on... Joseph spent too long pondering this, so much so that he startled as the man struck up conversation.
The man looked like one of those non-denominational types, jeans, tee-shirt, tattoo sleeves. Trinity-Calvin had a few like that themselves, but the convention was normally more formal. The many students that came were normally that demographic...though Joseph didn't think he'd seen this man before...and he was a bit old for simply being a student, and the question was pretty discerning. Maybe he was one of those mature students? They went to Church right? The man had asked a question! Joseph needed to respond.
>> "You look like you got a lot on your mind son"
This was true. A simple statement, though why a man a few years older than him was calling him son he had no idea. The man was clearly American though, judging by his accent."Whoa, sorry,I'm a little jumpy at the moment. Yes, lot is somewhat of an understatement. What brings you here? I don't think I've seen you here before." Linely's police training had taught him years ago never to judge a book by his cover, while he felt overdressed talking to the man, he gave little indication of it. "Are you here to see the minister?" The police detective offered a hand to the stranger. "I'm Joseph by the way."

It had been a rough few weeks for PD Joseph Linely. That was for sure. He'd never intended for things to work out the way they did. But that was how God, by his divine providence, had willed it. As Joseph Linely trudged through the leaves that had been swept into the street, the cases flashed through his mind. The rash actions he had taken in the Rag Man case. The trauma of the New Moon slasher case. Had he given over a woman to a group of unsavory telepaths in order to save the skin of people he cared about? Noel had warned him to be careful of who was holding his leash. Well, he tried to serve his Lord Jesus Christ only. But was the state acting in a Godly way? The President didn't hugely seem to be. Then there was the whole issue of the METAs and Roach... had he been too quick to trust a criminal mutant? Had he betrayed his fellow man? Devon meant well, but did his other deputies mean as well as he did? Would the law be violated in the name of protecting "mutants" from being brought to justice? Linely would have a lot to talk about with the Minister.
Another leaf crunched under his foot in the dry of the sun. It would have felt warmer if it wasn't for the blowing of the wind. Linely had opted for a suit and a decent amount of sun-screen. If Emily could have seen him, she would have laughed at his perhaps poor application. He couldn't help the fact that he burnt easily, it wasn't exactly common to have burning sun in Yorkshire....Yes , there was Emily as well, how on earth was he going to explain the situation to her? Marriage was on the cards, but they both had lives, would a police officer constantly being in harms way be a good environment for a child to grow up in? Did Emily really want to live in a world where her children didn't know whether daddy was coming home? At least the Sunscreen didn't have a dilemma attached to it. That at least was doing its job. Linely kept walking until he reached his destination.
Trinity Calvin Presbyterian Church, in the old building of St John's (well as old as you could get in the USA. He'd gone to a Presbyterian Church in a 13th Century Guild Hall, now THAT was old.) Opening the large doors into the silence. His footsteps echoed in the building. Not a soul to be seen. Merely a present vacancy in the echoe of his own movement. At least the lights were on, meaning the minister was clearly here. That was something. Linely checked his watch. He'd arrived quite early for his appointment. The minister was likely handling something like Church finances-no wait!-a prayer meeting, Emily said she was going to that... this was gonna be awkward.
Linely sat down at one of the pews to wait, and casually got hold of his smartphone. The Church had free wifi, which was always a nice touch, though it still used a KJV translation, provided in the back of every Pew, for people to follow along in the sermons. Sometimes students and teenagers in the Church would be avid notetakers and be listening to the sermons, while the friend they had brought along would be just as avidly tweeting about something irrelevant. At least he wasn't being paged this time. He waited in silence for time to elapse. Even the tapping of his own feet achieved an echo.
Suddenly the sound of his own foot tapping was interrupted by the sound of the door opening again. Linely didn't turn round initially, preferring to let whoever it was have their privacy. If they wanted to talk, they would likely come up to him anyway.
So Ellis had agreed to help then. That was going to mean more paperwork, but regardless he was now involved, if only to keep the fact that the cops had been bribing a criminal to get information...they didn't need that kind of publicity, especially in the MRC. Ratty was known to be bad news by lots of the departments, and the Department for Public Health in particular didn't approve of his activities.
Linely couldn't help but smile as the Alien mutant started to give reference to retro detective shows. He tried to avoid watching them, he'd wind up shouting at the screen about procedure "To be honest, a detective show with an E.T crossover wouldn't be hard to imagine given how the media are..." probably with some heavy-handed message about mutant acceptance that doesn't actually tackle the subject properly. At least it would beat the all-star cartoon with Winnie the Pooh telling people to say no to drugs, in itself a pretty trippy experience.
"Don't worry. We have plenty of costumed vigilantes around in NYC, or had you not seen the X-Men running about the place?" Linely quipped. "It's actually kinda nice to have a mutant to work with that isn't as flashy." The X Men were nothing if not flashy, if they weren't controlling waters, creating vast swathes of ice, directing light in a glorious fashion or turning into thin air, it was almost as if they weren't around at all. They did good work, but boy did it make undercover stuff difficult.
"And of course, I'll take the lead on this. I'll probably have enough paperwork to deal with as it is without having a civillian making decisions for us. You have an idea of where we're supposed to meet this dealer?" It was obvious that Ellis had underground connections, so it was probably best that he was the face of such interactions, since the last time Linely had encountered an "M" dealer, the interrogation had been very much OFF the record.
So Jorge had called it all in? Good man, that was one thing they didn't have to worry about. Linely could hear sirens in the distance, one of those sirens surely would surely be their cleanup crew. The blue lights of the police cars would soon swarm this alley, not that it would be too noticeable as the dawn was continuing to crack. "That's a relief, Helen would not enjoy the stress it would put on her baby" or that would be her claim. Rather, she didn't want the undue stress put on her as well as her baby. How she was able to power through the work Linely didn't know, all he did know was that the kicks from the baby were getting a lot stronger, and a lot more obvious to his powers.
Olivia had nervously approached Cervantes, and returned a nervous smile to the officer. She stepped nervously towards the cop. "It's about..." She paused. Linely noticed one of her hands was clenched in the darkness. As if she was grasping hold of something she didn't want to let go. Whatever it was, it wasn't hurting her... the teenage girl continued. "I think I might need to tell my dad about something." Oh boy, was this going to be about the boyfriend she mentioned? That would only ever be a conversation filled with awkwardness, but Linely was sure that her Dad would just be glad to have her back...
Olivia walked up to Jorge, placing herself emphatically between the two officers. Linely couldn't see her hands any more, as she held them out in front of Jorge. As she opened her hands, the girl nearly began to sob. "How am I gonna tell my dad about this?" Linely could only look puzzled at this, surely Jorge would understand the situation better. Though if Linely had seen what was in Olivia's hands he would have understood completely.
For what was in Olivia's unfurled fist was almost like a shimmering, insubstantial, orb. Almost like the night sky, but twinkling with the light of stars. As Olivia began to tear up, a single drop of water fell from her cheek upon to the orb. The orb dissipated like smoke into the air. "I-I think I might be..." The girl trailed off and attempted to hug the water-manipulator again.
"Look Olivia" Linely calmly spoke to the scene. "Whatever it is, your Dad is still your Dad, and he loves you more than anything. What he wants is for you to be home safe, and for the thing that took you to be put in a cell with padded walls and bright lights." He could only hope Cervantes knew the situation better than he did.
Linely watched as Ghost dissipated into some kind of cloud form, well, he did warn her that it would hurt. Hopefully he hadn't killed her, now that would be really awkward, it would be on camera and all. Though honestly he could just tell the enquiry that he was trying to help a valuable individual on the team out, who was growing increasingly unable to help due to her creeping uncontrollable incorperality. He breathed a sigh of relief as the air elemental re manifested herself slowly and responded to his question. Inquiry averted.
"Well, pain normally doesn't go away, unless you have some kind of amnesia in your pain receptors which has happened once or twice" he joked. "There is a psychic element to it for sure, and a bit of nervous sympathy as well." She had got pretty badly hurt if the pain he had felt was anything to go by. "I feel half the pain I recall" he plainly responded to her inquiry about hi flinching. "Don't worry, I'm fine. I've recalled worse pains than that before. I know what it's like to be shot for real." Trying to protect an artist who had a habit of following danger around, or was that visa versa? You could never really tell with Shelby.
"So do you think my powers can help with your sensation problems?" He asked. That was the whole point of the exercise after all. He wasn't expecting there to be a miracle cure for her issue, which seemed very specialist, but nuking her pain receptors and nervous system with that hormonal reaction would surely have some effect, short term or long term he didn't know, but an effect nonetheless.
"Thank the Lord indeed" Jorge was being kind to him, or at least being diplomatic. The women and girls they'd saved mattered more than any feelings of remorse over what he had done in Linely's mind. "I wouldn't say no-one was hurt in the process..." Linely spoke. He wasn't going to have some heavy explaining to do at the Church, for example, was he now officially courting Emily? Did he really want to take things to the next level? Did she? As far as he understood it she just thought he was a close friend....She had agreed to spend an awful lot of time with him though...
"How much mental damage do you think these people will have suffered? Didn't you say most of your rescues were struck with real difficulties afterwards?" Hopefully Jorge wouldn't catch on to this smokescreen. True, Linely himself hadn't caused harm to the people he saved, but the Rag-Man was a monster. He'd half a mind to put a bullet through the b*stards brain after all the anguish, especially to Olivia's father.
The dawn was approaching, the sun beginning to catch the buildings, creating long shadows in the sky. The glass in the warehouse glistened with a golden sheen as the clouds began to break apart. The early sounds of the street were nearly audible from the buildings, but it was still early in the day yet. Hadn't rain been forecast anyway? At least moving the Ragman would be easier as it got lighter.
"Have we called this one in?" Linely quipped to Jorge. With all the power growth, anger at an evil mutant and saving the captives, it seemed that he had forgotten to do that. "If we want Helen the secretary to give us a row, that's a good way of doing that." Her mutation helped with organisation, but also made her very particular about not getting basic admin wrong. Particularly now she was expecting very soon, it would be a bad idea to make her mad.
Olivia had come out to join them as they were talking, she was trembling slightly. While her clothes were sufficient enough to keep a winter night at bay, being in the void of that unconscious thing was clearly having some effect. "Officer Cervantes?" She said quietly. "C-can I talk to you about something?" Linely looked at the senior officer. Sometimes policemen needed to be more than just cops.
Linely watched the alien-mutant at work, the man seemed somewhat annoyed at Ratty, not really surprising. It was obvious that the man HAD double booked on him, and while it all turned ok, it was still poor business, especially with Ratty's clientele being less than savory and often less than amiable towards one another. As Ellis picked up the card and walked away, Linely promptly followed.
Ratty was asking for payment now? Well, he'd probably get it on the next job. But one thing was for sure, Ellis was now going to have to tread very carefully. If Ratty was the vindictive type (and in certain cases he most certainly was) then anyone who went "off message" would likely be getting a response from one of his "little helpers". Particularly as the man had dirt on everyone, and rather enjoyed bringing people's lives crashing down using pieces of information slipped to the wrong person whilst the teller was drunk.
Linely dashed to get through the door to follow through the door as Eliis went out, managing not to trip over the doorstep in the dark. "Well, it looks like I have an impromptu partner, doesn't it?" Linely stated to the Alien mutant. This was unorthodox, but it looked like the man could handle himself, and it was perhaps better to be dealing with someone he could trust.
((OOC: If the rather clinical description of what the pain sensed by Linely through Ghost is too graphic do let me know))
Ghost's inventory of her injuries that she had been pervaded with was almost amusing to say the least. Linely felt it best not to go for the childbirth that she mentioned...last time he did that, it wasn't particularly pleasant, but it had been necessary for the take down. Pain in areas that he didn't have yet did have, it had certainly been an odd experience. So, that left the evisceration, electrocution and the gunshots. "Hmm." he mused to himself as he touched the air elemental's arm. This was going to be easier than normal, having a willing subject and bodily contact after all helped him concentrate.
It was an odd sensation, his hand went translucent as he touched her, at first it was as if he was just moving his hand through air, but he could feel her uniforms solidity pretty quickly. She really was having trouble keeping solid wasn't she? Well the pain was still there, her body certainly hadn't forgotten it. What he assumed to be the gunshot to her ribcage pulsed in his mind. It had been rather painful, he could sense the skin breaking and the bullet that had bored through the muscle, had bones been shattered? Linely wasn't sure, but it was a good candidate. He could sense a pain towards the lower end of the body that was deepseated and strong, but he thought it best not to even consider bringing THAT to the surface, it was difficult to discern what was the evisceration and what was the childbirth, but he didn't care to try for either.
"You're going to feel some pain in your chest" Linely stated clinically. He took a deep breath in, and out. This was going to hurt, even though he knew exactly what it was like to get shot. He reached out to that old pain, and brought it to the surface, withdrawing his hand from her as he did so. He watched as his hand soon became solid matter in front of him . Then the pain pulsed through his chest, like a numbing cold that jolted through his body. It would be worse for the air elemental, but even so Linely took a step back as he began to breath more rapidly. It wasn't exactly pleasant. Sooner rather than later he got his breathing under control. "I'm glad I didn't use your childbirth as my focus" he quipped. "How do you feel?"

Will be slow in current threads unfortunately due to university dissertations and finals. Will hope to update threads at some point. Apologies to those waiting on me to reply.
Linely fumbled with his phone in the dark of the night sky. He virtually dropped it again when he saw who it was. Emily. She was safe. Or hopefully so. If this was a ransom demand he might think again. He began to tremble badly. Tears began to sting his cheeks as he answered it, just before it went to voicemail.
"Hey Joseph, thought I'd call to see how you were. I'm on a-" She was clearly having a good time, no worries in the world. Not scared. Something told Joseph that his worry had been over absolutely nothing. He interrupted by nearly shouting down the phone.
"Emily, please tell me that is the sound of your voice. Please tell me that you're safe." He was full blown weeping now. Like a bloody baby. It was like she'd been given back to him, like she'd risen from the dead.
She laughed a little. She thought he was joking. "I'm fine Joe, I'm on the Church retreat, you know, the one that Naomi, Louis and Rachel are on as well? The women's retreat? Do you even listen to the notices?" All in an even more jovial tone. She laughed again, such sweet music to Linely's ears.
"Emily...I thought you'd been..." Now he was incomprehensible. It had clearly dawned on her as she gasped at what she'd pieced together from Lienly's blubbing. Linely could here the footsteps of the other officer coming out from the warehouse.
"I'm fine Joe, I'm looking forward to seeing you next week..." It was kindly, not even the smallest hint of amusement until the next part. "Although I must say this is an odd reaction from someone you've said was a ...friend." Linely laughed at this.
"I suppose it is. I'll see you later...sorry about the hysteria. See you later Emily." She hung up , the sound of a couple of the younger women giggling in the background. He was going to have some explaining to do.
>> "You alright?" Linely turned to Jorge, cheeks somewhat saturated with tears. He nearly shouted at Jorge out of frustration with himself."I jeopardised the whole operation with my rash actions. Power growth is something I could have predicted, the Rag-Man has had the time after all. If you hadn't had the power set you have, we both could have never been seen again!" His voice quietened. "I'm sorry. I was a bad partner in this." He braced himself for a deserved rant from the experienced officer. There would probably be an inquiry over this if they reported it as it actually happened.
