The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was pretty obvious to Serena that Sam was getting mad. Not only was he still going hard on the holograms, and earning less points than her, but the room was gradually getting colder to her. She suspected this younger version wasn't as used to considering the impact he had on teammates. Luckily for her, moving around was helping. And it wasn't like she'd not trained with him before.
She kept manipulating the blood, like a long flexible whip. It was part physical effort, part mental dexterity using it to disarm and re position people. She was wracking up points left right and centre.
She mixed using her mutation and her body fluidly, more than she could have the last time she trained with Sam, that was for sure. Catching people off guard, tripping them and getting them in holds, whilst simultaneously dragging people's legs and weapons from them using her supply of blood.
A couple of minutes later the buzzer rang and the room froze, she took several slow breaths and calmed herself down before glancing at the scoreboard. She'd held the lead pretty solidly the whole way through. She could tell that he recovered a lot from his early string of lost points, but he still seemed to be channeling some anger there.
Serena on the other hand, never lost composure during training. She was doing this practically every day, and was getting good at it. She glanced over to Sam, assessing him.
The teasing had been absolutely expected. Cait was quickly learning how too push Serena's buttons. And in fairness, they were pretty massive, obvious buttons. She was still blushing and trying not to incoherently murmur when Cait walked off. "Not every day you meet someone and then are in bed with them hours later." she muttered, once Cait was out of earshot.
Serena debated trying to dash and put on some clothes, but hesitated. Besides the fact that Cait was right about having seen her naked, it would take a moment, be obvious. And her bed was warm. She sighed and leaned back a little, tugging the sheets up gently so she was mostly covered and flicking the switch for her AC to warm the room up a little.
Cait walked back in, prompting a wide, sheepish smile from Serena. "Thank you!" She accepted the water and took a few sips. She didn't feel hung over, particularly, just a little tired. "You're beautiful. And I know I said it last night, several times. But I'm sober now, and I felt the need to clarify that I wasn't just tipsy. I do quite like you."
She didn't mention that casual sex wasn't something she normally did, Cait had probably worked that out by now.
Serena's evening had been a bit of a whirlwind, ending in a very... handsy trip back to her apartment, and the most interesting exciting night she'd maybe ever had. It wasn't the sort of thing she typically did, in fact it was the first time she'd had casual sex, ever.
It was incredible, and it was exhausting, ending in her snuggling up to Cait, exhausted at the end of the evening and both of them passing out for the night.
She slept very a very sound, dreamless sleep. Exhausted and relaxed at the same time. Stirring a little when Cait got up she only fully came to consciousness when Cait was standing over the bed in... very few clothes. Serena yawned and slowly sat up "G'morni-" She glanced down and quickly tugged the sheets back up as she realised she was still totally nude.
Why was she blushing? She'd just slept with the woman for goodness sake!
"Er- Water. Kitchen, there are glasses in one of the clear cabinets, tap water is fine to drink, it's filtered." She sheepishly drew the covers up.
Juniper could become intangible? Now that was interesting. Serena had heard of powers like that before, but she couldn't recall ever seeing one in action. "That's actually very interesting, that would make you very difficult to harm indeed." Not that Serena wanted anyone to actually get hurt in the danger room, she'd experienced that, and she'd also caused it more than one, she wasn't eager to repeat.
"You certainly have a refreshing attitude, Juniper." She complimented, moving back over to fiddle with the settings. "So the room generates not just objects, but sort of... constructs, it can create creatures or people for practice. As well as obstacle courses, and pretty much anything you can think of." She admitted.
Serena reached over to her duffel bag and opened one of the chilled canisters of blood. "It's up to you if you want to try and partake in an program with me, or just watch. If you want to watch first and try something in a bit, that's up to you also." she started fiddling with settings again, setting up a pretty basic training program with killer robots.
Serena was glad that the teasing had let up a little, she'd had more than enough of that from Cait thank you, she didn't need it from other gorgeous women. Quirking an eyebrow at Juniper, Serena wondered what she meant by that. "How do you mean, invulnerable?" Surely it was something mutation related, she didn't think she'd ever met anyone invulnerable before. Resistant to damage, sure.
"And do you take any issues with gross mutations?" She always felt the need to check if people got faint around blood, her power was not pretty in the classical sense. She'd learned to kind of love it herself, but she was a weird writer.
The geeking out comments made her smile, thinking of her sister's reaction, and of James' reaction so long ago. "If he's been talking to the X-men, or a lot of the students around here I'm sure he does know about it. It's not exactly a secret, it's just not open to the public, so to speak."
Serena chuckled in response to that, it was always nice to hear people that weren't ashamed or nervous about admitting to having a super close friend. She'd certainly never been shy about admitting when she was close to people, but she knew that she was far more relationship and feeling centric than most people tended to be. "I'm glad to hear it, if he has the will and the right attitude, there are plenty of people willing to help." Which included her.
Dear god, she thought Cait was an anomaly. Had Juniper also come from the alternate universe to transform Serena into a walking blush? Although she doubted the way things had turned out with Cait was how things here would work. Surely not. She tried to clear her throat before replying, the blush had noticeably deepened. "Well thank you."
Serena tilted her head in amusement. "What were you thinking of doing in here, my usual training is pretty intensive.I don't think that'd be appropriate." She pondered. "I don't mind you watching some of it, but I also don't mind finding an activity to show you what the room can do. Now that you're here, it's not a big deal." Besides, she'd called Serena beautiful. She was biased.
Serena snorted derisively at the pun. "He wishes." Serena didn't exactly hide the fact she was gay, but she didn't broadcast it either. "Actually, puns aside I don't know how many women he's given the cold shoulder, I imagine not many at all, but he'd definitely never have the opportunity with me." Even if she wasn't a lesbian, Sam and her had more of at student teacher relationship than a coworking one, and it had developed over the years into a friendship. Serena was very grateful to him for all he'd done for her, but at the same time all of that history made his problematic phases more agitating.
"I have, the others helped me. Well. Sort of, I accidentally outed myself on Rebecca's livestream and she helped me pick one on the spot. It's Sanguine." That had been a whole ordeal. She'd also accidentally outed a pregnancy in the process, that was definitely a low moment. But it had led to a super fun hang out with Becca, so she wasn't exactly mad.
Serena didn't really mean to dodge the question, but now that it was asked directly she went straight into her answer. "So first, I think all the super hero stuff is amazing. Helping people is admirable, on any level. Fire fighters, doctors, cops. All of it. I'm all for doing good in the world." She was building up some intensity to her voice, emotional weight.
"But what I think is really important isn't necessarily the acts themselves, but that the X-men are a team of mutants, consistently seen doing good. They are an example to the public of some of the best mutant kind has to offer..." She stammered a little before continuing. "They have the potential through their actions, to change the minds of people afraid of mutants, of people that hate them. Someone might see them on T.V and think 'hey, they're not all bad. They can't be all bad if the X-men are like that.' and change their way of thinking. Even if it's just a handful of groups changing their thinking, it's a good thing."
She glanced down at her feet sheepishly before looking back up to meet Spencer's eyes. "And the reason I feel that way, is because that's exactly what they did for me. I was scared of mutants, scared of myself when I became one. Now I love them." Serena realised she was staring quite intensely into Spencer's eyes after a few moments and blushed, looking back down at her coffee before taking a sip and gathering her somewhat disorganised thoughts.
"That's fine. It's okay. Sam needs adult supervision these days." She sighed, he kind of always had. To some degree, but at least he was responsible with the students. Young Sam was far more balanced, less broken in many ways, but he was also reckless and arrogant. She was actually deeply upset by all this de-aging business going around, Amelia had been bad enough. Hell, Evelyn had been bad enough.
Nodding Serena smiled warmly. "That's good! It's a good thing to aspire to be, and that sounds like a good friend too. How are you finding the school?" Serena personally had adored the whole school, she loved the grounds and the classes offered, and so many of the staff were absolutely wonderful too.
... What was with every cute girl Serena met, literally anywhere making her blush? It was so not okay. Well. Maybe. She liked being complimented, but she didn't like being embarrassed. "I-Urm." clearing her throat she forced out an actual reply. "That sounds like something you say to plenty of people, actually."
Serena shrugged. "Students can be in here with supervision, I suppose I'm technically qualified to supervise." She chuckled a little at the followup. "You are sort of, but I don't really mind. You're much nicer than other interruptions I've had recently." Better looking too.
Hanging out with Rebecca was reminding Serena more and more of the things she loved about living in New York, and how valuable it was to have a friend that understood you. Rebecca understood her on several levels already, they were both gay, well Becca was bi, but in the same sphere. They were both from the Isles, into writing more than almost anything else, and wanted what was best for the city. The X-men thing reaffirmed it for Serena, and she was definitely more comfortable having Rebecca as a leader she could turn to.
Nodding in agreement. "She'd definitely trying to live her best life, she had a little stumble with grades and such last year, but she's rebounded with surprising tenacity. I'm proud of her, and here for her if she needs it." Serena was very glad that Alice was doing well academically, as well as being out and proud. She was probably better at it than her older sister, truth be told.
Serena cleared her throat and tried to shake off the blush and the fluster. It didn't work, obviously. She tried not to let on how much Becca bringing up the kiss in the garden made her fluster, Becca was relentlessly attractive and Serena was sure that she knew that. "I'm beginning to question my decision signing up for a team with you." She joked. She wasn't obviously, but she was now dreading the prospect of being teased a whole lot more.
Serena chuckled and toasted a brownie of her own. "I agree whole heatedly, and approve completely of the metaphor, obviously." She grinned and leaned towards Rebecca. "Now... Tell me about Mirror, spill." for the rest of the afternoon it was as if Serena hadn't been away, and she got Rebecca to spill as much of the adorable details as she was willing, Serena came away from the whole thing feeling more energised than she had in ages.
Serena's stance and body language further softened when she got a better look at the woman, and she started replying, naming herself. She didn't look like a kid, probably an adult. She knew that there were adult students at the mansion, heck until very recently her sister had been one of them. "Hello, Juniper. Sorry if I frightened you, I just wasn't expecting to see you there." Serena soothed.
Her eyes narrowed slowly. Sam. Again. "Sam told you? Gave you a code?" How was it that Sam, who had always been enough of a pain in her rear while he was older than her, was now more of an issue as a young adult. He was cocky, relentlessly flirtatious and could be downright rude. It bothered her.
"He... Should not have done that, or be doing that." She sighed and moved closer to Juniper.
"It's sort of hard to explain, but no, it's not a VR room in the sense that you might be thinking." She watched as Juniper marveled at the room and reached out to touch something, realising that it was in fact solid.
"I assume you've heard of the X-men, and them being based out of the mansion? This room is the danger room. It's kind of a training room, it can simulate just about anything you can think of and is used by the team to train, and to help young students cope with their powers." She smiled as Juniper was seemingly lost for words, she recalled the first time she'd seen the room in action, it really was cool.
Holding out her hand for the shaking now that the distance had been closed, Serena gave the startled woman a soft, genuine smile. "It's nice to meet you Juniper, I'm Serena."
It felt like it was getting harder and harder to have a nice quiet session in the danger room. Some of it was that the team seemed to have a pretty sizable roster at the moment, some of it was that other people randomly decided to go for sessions. Sometimes Serena even ended up taking a student, or another team member in there for some training or practice. Today though, surely today she'd get a quiet session!
She turned a corner and immediately saw a st- was he a student? He was freaking big. Like, giant big. Whoa.
She stopped dead. Danger room. Of course he was.
Mentally sighing, Serena put on a smile and greeted the young man. "Hello there, may I ask why you're looking for the danger room?" She inquired, wondering if he was just a curious youth, or if he had a class or something she'd missed being scheduled.
Serena was pleasantly surprised by how well this was going. Not only was she not messing everything up right now, and the more she spoke to Spencer, the more she liked her. This was fun. "Right? Nobody likes to be shackled or judged for their life choices." She admitted, laughing.
Serena bit her lower lip lightly, a subconscious show that she was really enjoying being around another person. "I'm very glad you approve."
Maybe Serena shouldn't have used everyone's first names, but she kinda... Well she slipped. She'd need to try to stay on topic more.
"I do not. I just have some training gear at the moment, I've not decided on a costume. From what I understand there are a few groups that make them for the team, but I couldn't tell you specifics." She replied honestly. She really had no idea what to do about her costume. Maybe she should ask Mirror for help.
"Sorry, that's my fault. Using names and not code names." She nodded in agreement "Yes, Rebecca is magnetism, I think she goes by Valkyrie these days. Sam goes by Cold Steel, he's the ice mutant. Eye patch, lady killer looking gentlemen." before she could stop herself she added "He can be a very hard person to be friends with sometimes."
"Uhm... Well I've not been on the team that long, but I know most of them quite well. I think my favourite to practice with is probably Mirror, my favourite to turn to is probably Rebecca." She really did feel like she could go to Rebecca for advice about just about anything.
In her books? Well she hadn't given a direct comparison, or shout out in any way really. "Nothing specific. I think some of my own views on what makes them important crept in, them being mostly symbolic and all that." She didn't believe that the X-men fighting crime was made them important, it was what they meant to mutants, and public perception of mutants that mattered.
Serena definitely agreed. Actually with European folklore in general, things tended to get very creepy. Most people didn't realise how dark stories got, even with things like the tales Disney movies were based on. "There was a creature in one of them loosely based on the Cirein-cròin, as I said I do like reading a lot of folklore and legend. It's honestly rarer to find wholesome stories than disturbing ones, most of them are."
Serena was... Much less restrained than she usually was, and definitely much less restrained then Cait was currently being. Blame the tequila. Her kiss was soft, and sweet but betrayed an eagerness she hadn't realised was lying below the surface. She ran her hands down Cait's neck a little, nails trailing around while she was lost in the haze.
Exhaling slowly as the kiss parted, as they she was holding her breath the entire time, Serena blushed again, unsure of what do to about the compliment. "Thank you. I'm sorely out of practice." She admitted timidly.
"Look, this isn't the sort of thing I normally do. I'm normally very emotionally driven, and serious when it comes to other people but... I'm starting to think that some fun would be good for me. And you're fun." She muttered, as if it wasn't bleeding obvious.
Serena had never judged Rebecca for her lifestyle before, or the romance confusion thing she had going with Agnes so long ago, and she never would judge her for it. Everyone was entitled to make a mess every now and then, and Rebecca was still one of the most genuine and decent people in the world as far as Serena would ever be concerned.
That being said, she was still going to be riding on the high of being happy for Rebecca and Mirror for a long while. There was something to be said for stability, and they'd both definitely earned it.
"I think she does. She's getting her own place with a friend, but I know that I would have appreciated the option back when I lived here." She wouldn't have managed going back to the family apartment, selling it and moving on was the right thing to do, and she had no regrets there.
"Yes, I suppose there might be some." She conceded. She didn't joke out loud, but she was smiling. Rebecca making light of the situation had made her feel a lot better, joking helped when things were shitty. Especially when family were the ones making things suck.
"Becca!" There was that blush again. "I-" She murmured to herself incoherently. "You're teasing me." She glared.
Spencer seemed so much more genuine than Serena had expected. She'd sort of had this image of stoic professionalism, or paparazzi tactlessness. But Spencer was... Well she was nice, she seemed to choose her words sincerely, and she was clearly looking for something interesting to write about. Serena felt inclined to give it to her, she just wasn't sure what Spencer was looking for, exactly.
"Well." She pondered for another beat before responding. "Okay. So I actually didn't pick this up myself, a reader pointed it out to me, but I definitely inserted a lot about freedom of will, the ability to choose things." How did she say this without just waving a multi-coloured flag around?
Screw it. "Freedom to love, regardless of race, gender, anything like that. I didn't even realise I was placing in subtle things about those themes, they were just there." Was that all there was to it? "I think I demonise control freaks a little with my writing too, and not in the traditional cliche way. I mean people that really try to control other people, do things that impact lives without consulting those concerned."
Her eyes flicked up to meet Spencer's, a passion in them that had been absent before, a fire. Anger too. "Nobody gets to tell me who to love, how I should live my life. It should be that way for everyone." She was thinking of a particular old hag when she gave that little spiel.
"I love the X-men. They're incredible, Becca, Mirror, Sam, Maya...." She listed off names and thought about what each meant to her. "I've known a lot of the team since I was basically a teenager, some of them were there for me during the hardest period in my life, and I was definitely guilty of hero worship for a while but.."
"They're just people. Real people, that are strong and brave, and want to do something good in the world." She admitted.
The uniform thing made her blush. Hard. "I-well-Uhm." Dear lord! That sounded like something Sam had said in an interview as a joke! "Most of the costumes are unique to the individual, some of them kind of have skirts. Like Becca's. I'm not really comfortable in miniskirts so mine doesn't.." you were not going to catch her dead in one of those.
