The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

A love bug? Did she mean a bug, like literally? It was mutants, and the X-men so nothing was out of the window. Serena didn't think she'd ever actually met a bug mutant, so that was kind of new and interesting.
Serena didn't often meet people that were actually into myths and legends. And even then, it was usually stuff like the greek myths, the ones that were more ingrained into popular culture, or had been brought to light via a big corporation making a fluffy animated movie for children.
"Wow, really? That's actually fascinating. I've sort of pulled from all over the place, I've not done anything with Cait Sith literature yet, but I've absolutely considered it." She paused, seeing an opportunity for more cheesy flirting and seizing the moment. "Very scary, creepy legend. I'm glad you're much nicer and softer than that." She was bad at this, she had admitted she was bad at this. Time to own it.
Serena felt like flailing in her seat when Cait replied to the comment. It hadn't been so much a request as an out loud admission of intent, to build up courage. Cait was leaning in first, which made sense.
Serena met the beautiful woman's movement with her own. She was much less awkward, much more engaged and eager than before. It showed.
Serena had finished her stretching, and was just getting started with setting up the danger room, building a scenario and just making sure everything was set up right, when she looked up and heard the surprise of another person Serena practically leapt out of her skin, stumbling a little before quickly recovering and snapping into a stance. There wasn't meant to be anyone else in here.
Her face and body language softened as soon as she located the intruder and heard the woman's voice. "Hi." The Brit greeted back, sizing her up and wondering where she'd came from. Serena definitely didn't see another blonde in here when she entered, and she also certainly hadn't seen anyone listed as active when she keyed herself into the room.
"Sorry, who are you?" She was probably a student. Serena hadn't met all of the X-men yet, but she figured they would have the decency to say something more substantial.
She really had kind of ranted there. Once Serena worked up the courage in a situation like this she was plenty able to discuss things at length, it was just getting over that internal hurdle. She knew perfectly well how to socialise, and how to behave properly in different situations. Recent years had just piled on some extra anxiety and she was sorely out of practice.
"Well I think more open is appropriate, you are my first interview after all." She replied with a hint of a smile.
"It's quite common with a lot of younger writers, I released my first book in college as I said, and at the time the whole situation was so... surreal. It just didn't seem like something that would happen to me. Over the years I've grown more confident and as a result I'm now comfortable attaching my name to my work." She'd not thought about this too much recently, the whole anxiety over attaching her name to things seemed silly.
"I think, what I'd say to a young or aspiring writer. Is that the person most critical of your work in any situation will almost always be you. If you genuinely care about what you're writing, or if it's a topic you're passionate about and you're taking time and care with it... Don't be nervous about sharing it. You'll reflect on your behavior as juvenile or silly." People's reactions were never as bad as you imagined them.
The family thing was so wholesome and sweet. Serena was so excited that Rebecca had found one, and was content with it. Last time her and Rebecca had really discussed relationships it had seemed like her Scottish friend had been all over the place, hot mess was an apt description. But she had it all figured out. If anything, Serena was highly envious.
It was always a good sign when someone didn't retch when you handed them your baked goods. Serena hadn't baked in forever, but apparently she hadn't totally lost the knack for it. Hanging out with Alice probably helped, that girl was a kitchen ninja and her friend would be super lucky to have her as a roommate.
"You're right I suppose. I mean, of course you are. And we're getting there. I gave her a key to my apartment, not so she has to move in or anything but so that she knows if she ever needs it, she doesn't have to ask." Maybe she was pushing things a little where sibling relationships were concerned, but Serena didn't really do relationships by halves. She felt deeply and did her best to be honest and upfront about it. With friends too.
Rebecca's response prompted hearty laughter. "God. Yes. Sorry for going off on one about her, evil witches are problematic." She paused and looked up at the ceiling lost in thought before grinning. "I don't believe I've ever heard of a gay princess, and I think I make quite enough of a fool of myself around women that are not royalty." She sucked at flirting. So bad.
Serena was doing her best to not pay attention to Sam, but she could practically feel the rage and adrenaline radiating off of him. She was certainly expending less energy than he was doing this too, her movements were all calculated and controlled. Serena valued control, especially in combat.
She moved past another few people and floored them in a swift, practiced motion. Some of them she downed with her bare hands, using holds and trips and their own momentum against them, and the more passive ones she tripped up with blood whips and projectiles to the knees, mixed with physical blows.
Everything was keenly measured and controlled or balanced to not to too much damage, but get the job done. In fairness, Serena had designed this program, and she practiced with it regularly, but still she felt like her fighting style worked well for this sort of thing. The younger Sam was so much more.. aggressive.
He seemed to want to prove he was the best, when he clearly wasn't. And was losing his head over the situation. He was seemingly keeping good pace with her, but for every time he went overboard with the violence an error sound played and he was docked a point. She'd heard at least 2, he must have broken the second man's jaw or something.
It was a great time of day to go training the danger room. None of the X-men had it booked, and after that last meeting with Sam she thought she had his timing worked out too. Thank god, she didn't want to run into him for a little while at the very least. He was challenging, to say the least.
She was in her normal work out clothes, which basically amounted to yoga pants and a tank top with her hair tied back into a neat pony tail. She was carrying a duffel bag with some blood canisters in it for the purpose of working out and getting in some power control. She made her way to the door and keyed her way in.
She yawned a little and dropped the gym bag on the floor, slowly doing some stretches and prep for a couple of minutes, limbering up in silence before she moved over to the control panel and frowned. Had someone been messing with it? No matter.
She began keying in a training routine and selected some music too. It helped to train with distraction, simulate the real world a bit more and all that. And she just liked music, metal was perfect for killing fake vampires!
Serena nodded. "The X-men here have access to a pretty lovely counselor. And their own Doc, though I suspect he is a little more gruff than yours was." She smiled, inwardly thinking happy thoughts about the old man. He must have been getting on in terms of age by now, but he was just such a truly thoughtful and wonderful person, Serena couldn't help but love him. He had a rough exterior sure, but Serena had always gotten on with him. And he wouldn't do his job if he wasn't a decent person.
Chuckling nervously Serena bit her lip again. "I- Well thank you." She'd heard this all before of course. Her editor tried her hardest to drill it into her brain. "Some of it is definitely a right place, right time combination of circumstances though." Of course there was some skill involved, but luck was still a factor.
"They're urban fantasy. Set in London, but with magic and mystery and a lot of mythological basis. I like to read up on those sort of things. I'm a bit of a nerd." She admitted, blushing for the millionth time.
Dear god. Cait was good at this. So much better than Serena. She waved over more drinks and was swiftly supplied with yet more tequila, along with some for Cait if she wanted it. "You are. A lot better at this." She murmured, downing a shot before turning back to Cait. "It's very hard to not pay attention to you Cait, you are absolutely captivating..." She leaned a little closer before stammering. "I-I think would like to kiss you again."
Okay, if he was going to just concentrate and get on with the exercise she could deal with that. At least she wouldn't need to deal with the flirting. She activated her mutation as the timer counted down, the eerie blue glow surrounding her body and then drawing out the gallon or so of blood she had stored in the canisters, floating it around her body like some sort of disturbing shawl, floating a few inches away from her body, she took a combat stance at the same time.
As Sam sprinted off and immediately got to work icing someone Serena took a breath and steadied herself, positioning towards some of the more aggressive looking opponents first.
They sprinted at her in a group of 3 at first. She flicked out a wrist at one, causing a whip like structure of blood to wrap around his leg and just gently tug him off balance, tumbling into the second while the third came at her with a bat. She waited until what appeared to be the last moment and side stepped, catching his wrist with both of hers and pivoting hard on her heels, using his momentum against him to send him to the ground and disarm him in one swift motion.
The point counter rang out as the two in front of her tumbled to the ground. Sam had taken three points for immobilizing the man, Serena had 9 for taking out three so far.
Serena had definitely heard comments to that end before. She definitely had some quirky personality hang ups, the accent was one of them. "Thank you! I think I keep it out of stubbornness more than anything else, a little homage to my heritage." Funny now that she knew what her heritage actually meant, and the fact that she didn't touch a penny of her actual inheritance.
Serena had to stop and consider this one seriously. "That's actually a tough one. I think a lot of things inspired or impacted it." She paused for a moment longer, before actually deciding on her answer. "It's the third in the series. I wrote the first back in college, and I was so much more timid than I was now. The first two were released under a pseudonym. And now I'm a lot more open to the world." Some of it unintentional, sure. But it she was out there now.
"I've experienced a lot of interesting mutants, read a lot of fiction and spent time with the X-men. As a teenager, I really didn't understand the world of mutants and all the crazy unbelievable things in the world, at least until I manifested. Even now, new crazy things are shaking people's perception of the world, look at the Atlanteans, for example." She paused, taking a sip of the coffee and gathering thoughts before pushing on.
"So I figured, if powers were real, and as varied as they are. Why not write about magic? Why not imagine a world were myths had foundation in reality, a basis in our real world. That's where a lot of the ideas came from. As I wrote on, more themes from life crept in, socio-political things like sexuality and gender politics." She admitted before adding a little more sheepishly. "I'm not very good at separating my own opinions from novel themes."
The woman settled very easily into professionalism, which hardly surprised Serena. There was this habit that people had to fall into a mechanical pattern of work very easily. She was like that with writing most of the time, or with training. It had been surprisingly easy to get back into training in the danger room again too, like riding a bicycle. It was fun to do completely without super vision too, nobody could see her being a nerd while training.
The mixture of comforting and professionalism made it easy for Serena to relax. At least, she was starting to feel at ease. "Well, I'm Serena Rivers. As for an interesting fact..." She thought back to the answers she gave to group work and greetings in college. "I'm English, which should be fairly evident. But I mostly grew up here in New York, from pre-teens all the way to where I am now."
Maybe she shouldn't have said that. It was her first real interview after all. Her cheeks did flush a little more. "Thank you for saying so, if I'm being honest it's a mixture of nerves and habit. I'm not used to being in the spotlight." She admitted unashamedly.
Serena had gone through the awkward transition of being a relatively outgoing, popular teenager to very introverted, slide back out into extroversion for most of College, but the whole novelist thing seemed to have dragged her a few steps back into the introvert column, it showed to most people that had known her for several years.
Serena smiled even more as she shook Spencer's hand. There was something about coming back to New York and getting closure on her last relationship (Sort of) that had resulted in Serena being much more aware of the beautiful woman all around her. Maybe it was the lack of pining over something that was never going to happen again.
She would have to try hard not to let it distract her during the interview. "Thank you." She took a cursory sip of the coffee to test the temperature and set it down in front of her gently. "That's good to hear." She chirped thoughtfully before replying fully. "I'm actually quite excellent, and no. I've been around the building for a bit, I think my editor has my coat." She had definitely not needed it when signing books and chatting to fans. That room had gotten stuffy fast.
Serena tried hard to not blush at compliments, really she did. But beautiful woman were a weakness, there was definitely a rosy tint to her cheeks now. "It's okay, I think we're in the same boat there. I could only wriggle out of interviews and signings for so long, eventually excuses run out." She admitted, a little embarrassed.
"I don't know why I was avoiding it for so long, the day has been quite lovely, and in my head I think I built this up to be some paparazzi horror story, but obviously I was quite far off there." Recording? She... Guessed that made sense. Serena had recorded meetings and planning sessions with her editor before and vice versa, it helped when you got distracted. "Of course."
Serena nodded slowly. She really really could not judge Cait for letting it slip, she'd quite recently let that whole thing slip on a live stream with her friend. And outed said friend's pregnancy. But she could also see how Cait might be more understandably nervous around her about that, because from the little she'dd seen of them being regarded as criminals would have made life hard.
Serena squeezed the adorable woman's hand gently. "Hey, it's okay. I won't tell anyone. I promise. I can see why you might not want to go around advertising that." She wondered if anyone would skin her alive for messing up an X. Sam, maybe? That was if he wasn't walking around as a kid. Mirror and Rebecca were her friends outside of the team, they had a very good relationship.
Serena had been teased for the way she often bit her lower lip when she smiled while excited, but it was a habit she had no control over, it just happened. "If anything It just makes you more impressive and interesting. It can't have been easy."
Shrugging before nodding Serena gave Cait a shakier smile. "It's not easy, but as I've said I've dealt with worse, I survived it."
Compliments over her writing didn't get to Serena as much as they once did, signings and reviews had helped with that. She did still flush a little over the comment, but not as much as she once would have. "There are plenty of talented young writers, I'm just lucky."
"Well it's true-" She murmured before adding. "It's very cute, I mean attractive I mean-" Dear god she was so out of practice with flirting. "Feel free to stop me anytime here."
Serena hadn't done the whole interview thing before, but she had done a couple of signings. Even if this one had been larger on the scale than most of them. She'd increased in readership even before she'd signed up for the X-men, she figured there were some new people around now that had picked up her books. So, despite suggestions of how she should appear for a big public appearance, Serena opted for something comfortable , over flashy.
There was a woman already sitting, with what seemed to be a the equipment Serena pegged an interviewer might have. She found journalistic writing interesting, she'd dabbled to an extent but it was never really her thing or talent. Investigative journalism was even more interesting, a whole extra layer of talents involved.
She didn't know really what she'd been expecting. For one thing she'd automatically assumed it would be a guy, which was obviously wrong. The woman didn't immediately fit her perception of a journalist either, she didn't look prim and super professional, she looked strangely approachable. And oh boy, she was a knockout.
"Hi there, Spencer." She greeted with a much more genuine smile.
Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. "A coffee would be absolutely wonderful. How are you today?" She walked into the room and looked around. She was definitely glad her first interview was a little more intimate.
Serena raised an eyebrow at the comment. "Hold on a moment, that totally went over my head the first time. Did you say you were on the X-men over there?" To be fair, thoughts of crazy serial killer vampire were kind of distracting, she couldn't really be blamed for missing a detail like that.
During her brief period over there, Serena gathered that the X-men were much more vigilante types, which she actually found kind of even more inspiring than the X-men over here, because life must have been so much harder, but they did it anyway.
Serena bit her lower lip a little through a smile, Cait getting flustered was absolutely adorable, irresistible even. "I've dealt with high stress things since I was a teenager, it was shocking to be sure, but it's not like I'm losing sleep over it." Okay that was actually a lie, she literally had nightmares. But Cait didn't need to know about that.
It was so easy to get lost when staring at a beautiful person's eyes. The windows to the soul thing was all kinds of cheesy and corny, but Serena was definitely enjoying admiring Cait's eyes. "Oh really? I love music. It's a wonderful talent, and teaching is also lovely."
Awkwardness aside, this had turned out to be a really rewarding encounter, Serena loved meeting new and interesting people, and she loved meeting beautiful women even more, Cait definitely qualified. "It's actually rather fetching." She murmured through her smile, fingers gently running over Cait's hand.
Serena turned back and glanced at him. That wasn’t really what he was doing, she thought she’d gotten under his skin. The older Sam was much better at the verbal sparring thing, that was for sure. Kid had a fragile ego, go figure. “Okay then.” She sighed, starting to get a little mentally worn out.
She nodded slowly. “Eighteen or nineteen, got it.”
Serena tried not to sigh again, really she did. “That’s very impressive for someone your age, yes.” God, she was glad she’d met adult same when he was older, this was already very difficult.
“So, you said you wanted to train? Ready?” She activated a control training program, causing the room to shift into an open arena setting, a scoreboard opening up floating up in the air above them. “The idea is to use your body and your power to disarm and incapacitate people causing as little damage as possible, the room will keep score.”
There was a purple haze surrounding the 30 or so individuals the room had created and their eyes were glazed over as they stood frozen, as if indicating they were not in control of their actions.
