The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

I'm heading to a festival this weekend. Between festival prep the next couple of days and a couple of days of recovery afterwards I am unlikely to be around much utnil Thursday. Mostly this affects Amber as Darkshift and Meld are in semi-hiatus at the moment due to time/posting constraints.

It wasn't the first time she'd encountered someone who wasn't familiar with the different types of dinosaurs. After all, it wasn't exactly common knowledge. What purpose, in the modern world, did knowing such things serve? Mostly, it was dinosaur geeks and other geeks with similar interest patterns that tended to get most excited when she listed off what she could transform into.
"Think of a deinonychus as a sort of prehistoric ostrich except with a mouthful of sharp teeth and a set of giant claws. It's about the same size as I am now but much faster, more agile and possessing far superior senses." For many reasons, she considered it her second true form, alongside her human one. Because it was small and agile, she could use it almost everywhere, often including at night, in the city. She also considered herself a predator at heart and it was a superb hunter.
"A boar crock is basically a giant crocodile with tusks and night vision." Not much more to say about that one. It was her newest form and, while it's size made it far less practical than the deinonychus in many cases, it had fast become one of her favourites. For shear power, only the styracauarus with it's giant horns could compare.
"My own transformation is neither pretty nor painless either. But you're right, you get used to the pain." Perhaps if she wasn't touched by death her transormation might have been of a more benign nature. Or perhaps not, as Rico didn't look or feel dead. Not like her. "There's a balance, I think, between the human and the animal. It's not always an easy one to strike." She felt a kinship with the wyvern due to their similar experiences.
Amber considered their options for hunting. "I think we should move out of the city and into the forest. A wyvern and a dinosaur might be a little...conspicuous otherwise." She grinned sardonically. "As a deinonychus I can, perhaps, herd prey into your waiting jaws?" Thus taking advantage of both her agility and his great size and strength.

"I've never gone hunting with anyone before. No one else seems too interested in catching and eating dogs or cats." She laughed a little, knowing Aura was one of the few people who would see humour in such a thing. In the city such things were among her usual fare, along with raccoons and the occasional coyote. Humans had a strange relationship to animals they considered pets and the idea of eating a 'pet' animal seemed repugnant to them. She could understand not eating a beloved member of the family, four legged or two, but didn't quite understand why such a prohibition should extend to otherwise unrelated 4 legged creatures.
"Thank you. If you want to learn things I could probably help you." Once she caught up on her own learning, of course. Even with years spent in the wild, she knew her understanding of the human world, in many ways, surpassed her sister's. One foot in and one foot out was the balance she strove to maintain, although success was sometimes inconsistent.
As they walked towards her sister's room, she couldn't' help but smile seeing the different and sometimes very visible mutants lounging about casually. It reminded her strongly of her previous home back in Sanctuary. "Sometimes I miss Sanctuary. The Mansion is great, of course, but it's just not the same." Was it the sense of escaped desperation that was missing, all too common in a homeless shelter that took on anyone and everyone who was mutant and needed help? A strange thought, that one.

"There was a time that I liked school," she said thoughtfully. It felt like a very long time ago in a different lifetime only distantly remembered. How had things managed to change to much in such little time? In a mere handful of years she'd gone from a shy, sick introvert into something dangerous and, at times, barely human. She was still an introvert though, so maybe that counted for something? A common thread across the years of her life?
At least some part of her life was normal because gods knew none of the rest of it was. Was that the case for all mutants or was her experience unusual even among the unusual? "I'm sure I'll figure it out in time. If nothing else, I could make a great paleontologist, right?" She grinned at the thought. Who knew more about prehistoric reptiles than she? Of course, the fear of becoming some twisted scientist's guinea pig was probably enough to keep her away from that particular line of work.
"How did you decide you wanted to be a counselor and especially one working with mutants?"

As far as she had been able to determine, the only way mutants and humans could co-exist peacefully was if mutants took an active role in policing themselves. Ideally, human and mutant police forces would work side by side, maybe even as complimentary branches of the same agency. Of course, it could just be wishful thinking, but she liked to think that such cooperation was possible if the right people were willing to give it a chance.
"Not completely separate," she shook her head. "More like interacting and complimentary communities. Like, maybe with mutant only safe spaces and such but most places being welcoming of both." Yes, she was a dreamer. But sometimes dreams came true, right?
"It makes me happy to help mutants," she responded simply, continuing to walk forward. "Not many people find their purpose in the world, but I've found mine. I know I'm doing the right thing in helping other mutants and that gives me all the fulfillment I need." She spoke with a passion she felt to the core of her soul. "Hey, if you want to help we'll just have to find out what you're good at and work from there." She smiled encouragingly.
Within a few minutes the two reached her apartment building. She paused to unlock the door before leading the way to the elevator up to the 10th floor. Once it dinged, she unlocked that door as well before opening it. Flicking on a light, inside was open and airy with a mixture of cute animals and psychodelic art poster adorning the walls. "It's not much but it's home."

"Tried to get something large enough. They don't sell pants. Hope it's good."
"It's, fine," she answered. If being naked didn't bother her than being unfashionable certainly didn't. The shirt was long enough to cover any parts of her that might be considered indecent (whatever that meant) and it wasn't too impractical, all things considered. Of course, if the sun started rising then she'd be in serious trouble with all the exposed skin but that was still a ways away. Hopefully she'd be under shelter long before then.
"So what exactly is going on?"
Well, there went the theory that he might have some idea what the hell was going on. "No idea." She shrugged and though the reaction was casual her expression was anything but. "One minute I was enjoying the eclipse and the next I was flying through the air and landed here. Wherever 'here' is. It looks almost the same but there's something off about it. It doesn't smell right and it doesn't quite look right either."
It was frustrating being so out of touch with her surroundings, frustrating not to have the right words to describe what felt wrong. The not knowing made her feel afraid and helpless and it had been a long time since she'd felt either of those things. Nether feeling was enjoyable.

"No more stealing food," Ambrosia agreed doing her best to sound chagrined. It wasn't even an act, if she wasn't so very hungry she never would have resorted to theft. Really, she should no better!
Accepting the now offered mango slices, she took slice into her deft, little clawed hands and devoured it before answering. "I'm Ambrosia, what's your name? You seem pretty accepting of the idea of a dragon coming to visit you." The words were said with a distinct flavour of approval. Even as cute and tiny as she was, fear was still a reaction elicited by some. A dragon was a dragon, after all. Or maybe more aptly (and unfortunately) a mutant was a mutant.

It was no surprise that Amber wasn't the first one to want to take Devon's measure. She refrained from accepting the cookies or crackers because she wasn't certain whether or not they came from a bag. One of the disadvantages of being a mutant was an inability to eat processed foods. Cookies made my hand she very much enjoyed but those that came from a box would just cause her to throw up all over Devon's nice office. That was not the kind of impression she was looking to make. She did, however, accept the offered cup of water.
"Unless you give me a reason, I won't need to spy on you again." A good reason. The sort of reason that implied someone she cared about had been hurt by his actions. She was willing to spy when necessary but it wasn't her first choice. So much the better to be able to deal with both friends and enemies head on. "We have a counselor back at the Mansion too. Sometimes it can be good to talk to others." Gemma had helped her and she liked the adapted woman, even if it was something of a shock to lose all the things that made her both more and less than human while in her vicinity.
"Yes, Amber," she nodded and took a sip of water. Of course Lisa would have told him about her previous visit. "I don't need to find any former Order members." Unless he knew where Abyss was but that was far too much to hope for and she didn't mention it. Her adopted father had left long before Devon had taken over the place. As for the other members, the biggest reason she was with Sanctuary to begin with was because of her sister, Aura. Outside her family, there weren't any she had become close to.
"I heard you helped save Aura? She's my sister." That was the story she most wanted to hear about. Aura was a difficult person to get along with and not many approved of her actions or ideals.

Safer was definitely better and hopefully the human's idea of safer also included less people around by far. She nodded her affirmation at the suggestion. The thing about being a dinosaur was that it made you a target. Whether humans with a bias against mutants, big game hunters wanting to catch the impossible or people who simply panicked when confronted with a dangerous and unknown creature, there were all sorts of reasons why one might turn on and attack a wayward dinosaur. Today, of all days, this was not something she wanted to deal with.
Another nod at the suggestion of side street. Sounded like he had much the same thoughts as she about being unexpectedly attacked. If they could get to an area with few enough people she might even be able to resume human form and therefore be able to converse in a properly comprehensible fashion. Answers: She needed them and hopefully this stranger had them.
Breaking into a light job herself, she followed, pleased at his forethought to grab the festival shirt as they went past a vendor. She'd met several other shapeshifters over the years and while it wasn't a universal that clothing didn't shift with flesh, it was common. Maybe he'd met others as well. Keeping her senses on hyper-awareness, she was prepared to deftly dodge anything that might get in her path. Turning into the alleyway herself, she strained her ears in order to try to detect the presence of anyone else. For the moment, at least, she didn't hear or scent anyone obvious.
How exactly did one indicate that they were about to change shape and needed a little privacy to do so when one couldn't speak? The privacy was more for his benefit than hers given how uncomfortable a simple thing like nakedness made most humans. Having no other options, she chirped, held up one finger to indicate that she'd be just a moment, turned and hopped a few feet a away. Changing from one shape to another was never a pleasant nor a beautiful experience, as flesh and bone warmed and melted forcing itself from one configuration into another. In less than a minute, a human corpse girl replaced the dinosaur who stood there before, facing away from the other.
"If you have that t-shirt, talking might be easier." Her voice was mostly calm although with a tense edge.

It wasn't easy to navigate through a crowd of panicking humans. Even when confronted with an actual dinosaur, fear made people stupid and chaotic. The smart thing to do would be to run away from the dinosaur, not dart in and out of its path all willy nilly with no concern for the giant claws or rows of razor sharp teeth. To make matters worse, the screams and shouts of those self same terrified humans were hurting her sensitive ears. All she wanted to do was get away from the crowds and figure out what the hell was going on.
A bedraggled man ran in front of her, almost tripping her and causing them both to fall to the ground. She let out a high pitched screech and bared her very impressive mouthful of teeth. The smell of urine, a sound that could only be described as a wimpier and a stumbling run in the opposite direction was the result. Now that was the proper way to react when confronted with an angry dinosaur!
"Hey there buddy. Are you a friendly dinosaur?"
She turned her long neck to look at a young Korean man. He seemed calmer than most around her and she had to give him props for actually approaching her and talking to her. Maybe he had some idea what was going on? Not for the first time, she wished she could speak while transformed but she wasn't comfortable resuming her vulnerable human shape just yet. Instead, she chirped at the man and nodded her head. Yes, she was friendly. As long as no one tried to attack her first, of course.
Humans had all sorts of interesting reactions when confronted with an unexpected naked girl and especially an unexpected corpse-like naked girl. In her experience, most showed some degree of discomfort, ranging from barely able to look at her to hidden well but still present. Many tried to clothe her as part of their first interaction, supposedly for her own comfort but actually for there's. The cold had long ago ceased to bother her and, if anything, human modesty amused her. Occasionally, she'd met someone like Hades who didn't miss a beat and simply treated her like another person, despite her lack of adornments. Similarly, Devon also seemed un-phased and that gave him points in her book.
Initial reactions and words spoken made it clear he wasn't going to turn on her and try to do her grave bodily harm and the tension relaxed from her limbs. Had he expected her to show up like this or was he really that unflappable? It stood to reason that Lisa had probably told him of her first visit, although she had no idea if Lisa knew the full extent of her powers. When people heard 'dinosaur' people thought big but, in her experience, small was often a far better and more versatile option.
"I would prefer a seat." She got up off the floor and onto the couch, offering a small smile at his words. First impressions, at least, worked in his favour. "I'm sorry for breaking in and spying on you but this was my home and I needed to see what you were like when you were alone." Spying might be a skill she was starting to be come more adept in, but subterfuge was most definitely not.
