The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Whether it was a mature decision or not, Amber didn't know although Gemma was right that it wasn't easy. She shrugged her shoulders. It came down to the ability to maintain a grip on her sanity and the survival that came along with it. For a time it seemed like she might have been able to simply exist alone forever, but as the months ticked on the slow realization that human contact was needed became apparent.
"I appreciate the support. For now, all I want is to go back to school. I have no idea what my future holds, how I'll get there or how much of a handicap being a zombie girl is going to be but I've got the do something, right?" She offered up a sardonic smile. "I want my life to be more than just a struggle for survival, going back and forth between fighting and hiding. I want to do something, maybe something important. I just don't know what, yet." It was hard to even think about the great, black abyss that was years to come.

"A tiny camera? Brilliant! You have a mind for this mischief, I think." She grinned from ear to ear. He was a cat, so to speak, so perhaps such things went without saying. Were cats not known for their mischief right along with their grace and their beauty? It was all in good fun, of course. She didn't have a malicious one in her body and, as far as first impressions went, Manti didn't seem the sort of wish harm on others either. Or at least, she didn't have malicious intent towards anyone except maybe those who harmed others first. Sometimes they just deserved any bad thing that came to them.
"I never really thought about photography before. I guess that could be an interesting past time, though. Maybe a way to save up for school? Or, better yet, I could make a real statement. An artistic statement!" She was all ready a performer, taking on a new medium might prove itself interesting. Of course, first she'd need actual money to invest in an actual tiny camera and actual money was sadly lacking in her life. Retail just didn't pay in riches. Why couldn't she be the sort of dragon with an actual dragon horde, again?

"...What are you?! And I want my mango slice back!"
Ambrosia froze in mid-thievery. Caught! Darn!. Even her superior cat-like steal and silence hadn't hidden her from the eyes of the owner of the delicious mango. Maybe he would take sympathy upon a poor starving dragon?
"Finders keepers!" She gobbled down the slice before he could steal it back from her. On second thought, maybe that wasn't quite the best way to convince him to give her more mango.
"I mean, sorry. It's just that I haven't actually eaten since last night and you had these little little bits of dried fruit that were looking all too irresistible. I hope you can forgive me?" She did the big innocent eyes expression she could possibly manage.
It didn't take long for the man she assumed must be Devon to enter the office. He was young, younger than she'd been expecting, and well dressed. Not that she was much of a judge of what counted as 'well dressed' exactly. There didn't appear to be any obvious sign of him being a mutant, but experience had taught her that meant precisely nothing when it came to the presence of the mutant gene. He'd saved Aura and, right there, that said he was a mutant. Well, either a mutant or a very dumb human given her dear sister's record when it came to causing human death. Nothing in the way he carried himself suggested him being that stupid.
For maybe 15 minutes she remained hidden and watching. The enhanced senses of her lizard form could detect a the faint scent of vanilla, which was not unpleasant. Mostly, he sat and did paperwork which wasn't exactly the most exciting thing to watch. What was it she'd expected anyway? To witness some sort of diabolical scheme that belied an evil nature while she hid away in the shadows? Probably not, but it was more of a relief than expected when nothing about him actually seemed diabolical.
Having witnessed enough to determine that he probably wasn't the enemy, it was time to actually make her presence known. Running off of the pot and onto the floor, her shape changed from lizard to human. She was behind him but the faint sound of contorting bones and muscles might have been audible for one of especially keep hearing. As always when resuming human form, she was naked but had long ago lost the shame humans all too often seemed to have associated with such a state. If nothing else, seeing how someone reacted to seeing a naked zombie girl said a lot about a person. She remained crouched on the floor.
"Hello, I assume you would be Devon." Her voice was soft and even. Her body tensed, preparing for action just in case his first reaction was to try and strike or otherwise use some kind of mutant power upon the strange girl who had invaded his space without invitation.

The sun was glorious. So what if there was that little voice at the back of her head telling her that she was, presently, supposed to be at work and therefore she was technically playing hooky? What did that little voice matter anyway? It had been ages since she'd gone and enjoyed the beach and longer still (or at least it felt that way, anyway), since she'd skipped work to have a day to herself. Mental health day, wasn't that what they called it? So no reason to feel guilt here. Nope, none at all.
Making a noise that very much resembled a contented pur, she hoped her eyes at the sound of movement on the sand below. A young man had appeared, moderately attractive, and she watched him for a time. He didn't appear to notice her and she enjoyed watching others when they weren't aware they were being watched. People acted different in those times they believed themselves to be alone.
That's when she noticed the mango. She liked mango and her rumbling tummy suddenly reminded her that it had been hours since she'd last eaten. She wanted mango. She would have mango.
Waiting for the man to turn his head away, she picked her moment to jump silently down onto the sand. Silent like a cat wasn't just a saying, in her case. Creeping up, tail swishing behind her, she eyed a mango slice left sitting and undefended. Picking her moment carefully, she darted forward and grabbed her mango prey in her dextrous little hands, hopping back a couple of feet to devour it.

One of the great disadvantages of flying through a mysterious portal as a tiny dragon that lead from one universe to another was that those basic necessities such as clothing and money got left behind. Those were the struggles for one with a (apparently) limited ability to plan for the future and an insatiable curiosity that may or may not have been the direct result of being a dragon that was more cat than reptile. When a mysterious rift between realities opened, who could resist the temptation of going through it just to see what was on the other side? All of Ambrosia's friends, apparently, who also happened to insist that she was an idiot for jumping (well, flying) without thought of all the possibly horrible things that lay on the other side. An idiot she may well be, but so many grand adventures were only just waiting to be had!
This was the the second time she'd ventured through the rift, because one time just wasn't enough to discover it all. Much like the first time, she'd come after dark because strange flying creatures were a little more difficult to see and id as unusual at night. Unlike the last time, she'd accidentally fallen asleep in a tree and didn't awake until well into the daylight hours. The advantages of being a dragon were myriad, but, being in a whole other world, it did make retrieving her clothing and therefore her human form a little more challenging. Wandering naked humans got themselves in trouble, no matter how cute they happened to be.
So, what was a girl to do? The answer: Enjoy the day and go to the beach. Clearly. Taking to the air at an altitude hopefully high enough to be mistaken for a bird by most, she flew off in the direction of water. Eventually she knew a beach would call to her and so it eventually did. A little off the beaten path and therefore not quite as crowded as many of the more popular beaches, there was beautiful sand as well as some rocks that would be perfect to perch upon and sunbathe. Yes, even tiny dragons enjoyed sunbeams. Finding herself a rocky perch at the edge of the the soft sand, she landed and spread her wings to absorb the sunlight beaming down on her.

That feeling of fear she elicited in her enemies was a satisfying one. Were she a more sadistic sort, she could see how the feeling could be almost addictive. It made her feel powerful to witness her enemy retreating under thread of claws and fangs, especially knowing said enemy was dangerous in and of himself. It was one thing when a mere human felt terror, but quite another to see it in the eyes of a mutant. Fortunately, she wasn't the sort to seek out such sensations and, if she did find some satisfaction in the whole experience, it was only because he had attacked her first and anything that happened to him was therefore justified. Maybe next time he'd think twice before tormenting innocents!
She prepared herself to leap and finish off her enemy. Sickle claws out, she lunged, aiming for his chest. Anticipating some defensive action, she was caught off guard when he didn't move at all and claws penetrated deeper than anticipated. The blood coming out from the wounds she'd inflicted flowed faster than looked safe and with a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach, she preyed she hadn't accidentally killed the man. He might deserve to feel terror and he might deserve a few scars to remind him to think before acting, but he didn't deserve to die.
That's when she noticed the chains. They weren't natural and she couldn't be certain they were entirely physical, glowing slightly as they were. She could see them wrapped around Sword Arm and Tentacles and she could see both them also appeared to be collared as were the others. Was he their master who had imprisoned to do his bidding? Had she possibly just killed someone not in control of their own actions?
There was no time to contemplate such things as she saw the chains extend out towards her fighting partner and a collar wrap around his neck. A moment later, she spotted a similar collar headed towards herself, a sadistic smile upon the wielder's face. Whatever power those chains held, she did not want to find out. If, as she suspected, they were part of some kind of mind control power, she didn't have the training to resist. In reality, she didn't really have any sort of formal training at all.
Without further thought of what might happen if she miscalculated, she ran and leaped, praying with every force of will she possessed that she managed to leap through the floating chains, that her claws actually struck flesh and that in so striking she might actually distract or hurt the villain enough to make a difference.

When Aura had first told her that Sanctuary had new owners, Amber wasn't quite sure what to think. Sanctuary had been her home for several years before she'd gone off to live in the woods. It was the first place she could remember truly feeling like home and the only place in which she'd felt like she belonged to an actual family. So many memories there and, aside from the very end when her family had abandoned her, most of them were good.
Of course, there was the other side of Sanctuary as well: it was a refuge for mutants that often didn't have anywhere else to go. The misshapen, downtrodden and those otherwise unable or unwilling to absorb into human society had a place to go where they could be warm, dry and fed. All of those things were admirable but they were not the things that occupied her thoughts. That place she'd called home, how had it changed since the new ownership had taken control? Who was this new owner? What was he like? It seemed important to find those answers.
Once the decision had been made to find answers, she'd wasted little time in her pursuit. Direct and without subterfuge had always been her way and so she'd gone in person, around a week ago. Lisa met her at the door and the reunion was a happy one despite the trepidation to felt in the possible outcome of her quest. Yes, his name was Devon, no he wasn't in right now, yes he had an office, yes she could make an appointment to see him. No, on second thought, she didn't need to make an appointment. Thanking her, she left to consider her next action.
An official appointment was certainly one way to take stock of a person and see what sort they were. An appointment, however, had its disadvantages. When one met another for an appointment, one was on their best behavior and any actions they took or words they spoke were with full knowledge that they were trying to make an influence upon another person. No, an appointment was not the best path to take especially when she had other options available to her.
Instead, she did a little research on the layout of the place and the schedule Devon kept and, armed with knowledge, returned with a new plan in mind. Making her way back out to Sanctuary, she changed into a mecistotrachelos, a tiny prehistoric gliding lizard, and stashed her robes under a nearby tree. She knew from her previous trips out there that one of the residents always kept their window open and that the screen was busted. The bars in the window presented no problem for something as tiny as she. Climbing up the tree, she aimed herself towards the window before leaping, extending the flaps of skin along her arms, and gliding gracefully to the window ledge. From there, it was a relatively simple matter of navigating herself from the second floor down to the first, the main challenge being to keep herself hidden from the curious eyes of the humans and mutants wandering around the place. It wasn't the first time, she'd done something like this. Once she made it to the door of the office, she waited for one of the cleaning persons to open the door and enter, skittering in behind them. Looking around, she spotted a potted plant and it was there she settled and waited for the target of her interest to arrive.

One moment Amber found herself tentatively enjoying the festivities surrounding the eclipse and the next chaos erupted around her. It felt like the world went crazy, with winds strong enough to force people and objects into the air suddenly erupted and panic in every direction. What should have been a nice evening and a chance to properly interact with the human world, mutant and human alike, had become something more closely resembling a nightmare. In a a panic the decision had been made to change her shape into that of a deinonychus and, mere minutes after that fateful decision she'd found herself in the air and forced through what could only be described as some kind of opening or portal to another universe.
How do describe what it felt like to be shunted from one world to another? Disorienting, certainly. More words than that, she didn't have. Landing hard on the other side, pain shot through her as her she fell ungracefully onto her back. Tenderly getting to her feet, at first glance things didn't see so strange but there was something subtly wrong with the way everything smelled and none of the buildings were quite the same or in quite the same location. What in the world had happened and where in the world was she?
All around her, people ran and panicked. Spinets of conversation overhead with beyond-human hearing made obvious that she wasn't the only one who had suddenly appeared in the other world and that people in this world had suddenly disappeared just as the event that had taken her hear had occurred. Sent through the rift to the place she, herself, had come from? It seemed likely.
For the moment, no one paid much attention to the dinosaur standing in the middle of the street but how long was that likely to last? Picking a direction to take her away from the radius of the crowd, she started jogging. With luck, she'd find somewhere with clothing that might offer her the opportunity to resume her human form and discover more about this world and what had just happened.

The dragon began to stir and Ambrosia hopped up to a nearby tree branch. Just because she may or may not have had nine live and just because there may or may not be solidarity with a fellow dragon didn't mean she was going to take any chances. Who was to say that said dragon would be as interested in seeing her as she was in seeing it? Who was to say it wouldn't take a snap at her, half asleep and still groggy, not realizing what she was? If it so chose, it could probably devour her in only a couple of bites. Definitely better, therefore, to remain out of dinner range.
As it turned out, the dragon did not, in fact, appear to be especially dangerous and thank the Earth Mother for that. A curious squirrel, apparently either more brave or less intelligent than she, also took an interest in the dragon. Unlike her, however, it didn't seem to have any fear of the size of the creature's teeth or its ability to devour it whole. In a less than graceful moment, the skitterings of the squirrel resulted in a rotting tree branch falling squarely upon the dragon's head and she had to struggle to stifle a laugh. Laughing at the great creature would likely not make for the best of first impressions.
"Why hello there, great dragon. I didn't know there were any other dragons out there either. Such a pleasure to see I was wrong." Walking to the end of her branch, she stretched and extended her wings out to their full 40 inch span, displaying her bright blue and purple scales. A little bit of ego was expected. She was a dragon, after all. This stranger might be larger than her, but she was just as sleek and beautiful.

"Don't give up on the idea of mystery. There are many mysteries in the world, you just have to know how to look." Because knowing what you were looking for was more important than where you were looking, in her experience. Not that she necessarily considered herself wise, but her ability to identify and throw away sometimes useless human convention gave her and edge, perhaps. In some ways, at least. In the ways that connected to the natural world. Humans, by and large, were very absorbed into their own existence and rarely spent the time to truly see what was elsewhere.
"Even if I found no lost civilizations, the Amazon was very beautiful and also wild and free. Maybe one day I'll return there." In a better state of mind, one that retained it's human intellect while still connecting to her more primal side. The struggle was sometimes a difficult one.
She smiled, the expression genuine and holding a bit of gratitude at the mention of dull human senses. She'd long felt the same and it was one of the reasons she'd spent so long resenting her human body. Those trapped in their weak human shells could never truly understand. Even her beloved sister Aura didn't truly understand.
"I'm mostly a ground hunter. Currently, I have only one flight form and it mostly feeds on fish and plankton. As a deinonychus, I hunt by stealth and ambush. However, if you're looking for something a little more showy, I recently acquired a boar crock form. Over 6 feet long and weighing just over a ton, intimidation and shear strength are its strong suites." She'd only recently gained full control of her new form and, now that there was no risk of losing complete control and going on a rampage, she was very impressed with its capabilities.

When the rift had first happened, it had been something nothing short of earth shattering. There was another world out there? Both the same and different than the one they all currently lived in? Not only was there another world, but they could now visit that other world? She'd read the news stories about how, on the night of the eclipse, the world went crazy, the rift appeared and people were violently sucked into it, apparently on both sides. At first she'd been horrified but the more she thought about it, the more fascinated by the idea she became. How utterly amazing, the thought of a whole other universe to explore.
When Ambrosia had first brought up the idea of an exploratory visit, her friends' reactions had ranged from cautiously against to horrified by the very thought. It was dangerous, they said. She had no way to no what horrors awaited her on the other side. Safer and better by far, to remain in their own world where they knew what was what. What if there were horrible fiends on the other side just waiting to devour anyone that went through? It didn't take long for the latter argument, at least, to be proven mostly false.
Sound though her friend's arguments may have been, she'd always felt herself to be more of a flying cat dragon with scales than a lizard, and cats do have their curiosity. As the days ticked on and the rift proved itself to be stable, that curiosity ate at her, slowly taking over her mind like a cancer. She couldn't think about anything else except what might be behind that damned rift! Finally, unable to take it anymore and despite the fact that no one seemed willing to go on a proper adventure with her, she gave in. It was time to see what was on the other side.
She chose nighttime for her little expedition and dragon form. As a dragon, she could cover a lot more ground and at night there was less of a chance of being noticed. Flying up to the portal, there were people around but no one made any attempt to stop her as, taking a deep breath, she flew through. A moment's disorientation before she found herself...back in the city. Well, that was a little anti-climatic. Still, there had to be something different about this other world and she wasn't about to simply give up and go home just because she hadn't ended up on the Wildlands or someplace equally exotic.
Picking a direction, she began flying, taking note of the city below her. She'd always had an excellent sense of direction and had little fear about finding her way back to the portal. It was the small things that were different: A different store in that location, a different color and shape of building in that other one. It was her city but, in so many small ways, it wasn't her city. Fascinating! As she continued to fly, city gave way to suburbs which eventually gave way to forestland.
With dawn just starting to crest over the horizon and her thoughts starting to return to the idea of going home, Ambrosia spotted something on the ground. Were those scales on that creature? Black scales? She circled around for a better look and, sure enough, it was definitely a large, black scaled creature. In fact, in many ways it looked very much like a larger, less colorful version of her! She spotted a long tail, folded bat-like wings and she was pretty sure if it opened it's mouth it would also sport a snoutful of needle-sharp teeth. She'd never met another dragon before!
Said dragon appeared to be sleeping, but that wasn't about to stop her. "Hey, dragon. Wake-up!" So, maybe yelling at the dragon wasn't the smartest thing she could have done. An angry dragon many times her own size could be dangerous. Still, she was pretty sure she was more agile than at and could get away if needed. Probably. Cat's had 9 lives, so why couldn't she?

"Well, I make a great spy," she answered with a giggle and another sip of her drink. "I mean, not a spy spy but think mischievous, scaled flying cat and unattended windows. You'd be surprised the kinds of things you see and hear!" It wasn't that she was intentional spying, really, but there were a few friends that she had an open invitation to just pop by, in any form, and stay for a bit. The freedom of being able to fly. Despite the scales, she'd always felt like more of a cat than a proper reptile and that's just the sort of thing that cats did. They came and went as they pleased.
"I've got a few friends with whom I have an open invitation to fly in at any time. They always half expect it, but you should see the look on some of their newer and more casual partner's faces when suddenly there's a tiny talking dragon and they're getting all hot and bothered. Hilarious and so worth it!" The good ones took it in good stride and the not so good ones were usually weeded out pretty quickly.

Shame was the emotion she felt the most, not because she was unclothed but because she had lost control, done a lot of damage and almost hurt those she had no right or reason to hurt. She looked towards the other girl, who looked just as crestfallen as she felt with an added level of red due to her own nakedness. Jack handed the girl a shirt, which was probably for the best and a moment later she was handed a shirt of her own. Probably not the best time to explain that her clothes were just outside and instead she put the offered article of clothing on mutely.
"I'm glad no one got hurt." Despite the tumult of emotions, her voice was steady. Maybe she should just leave again, go back to the woods where there was no risk of accidentally hurting others. Part of her knew she was being overly dramatic. Everyone was allowed to make mistakes, right? As long as they learned from them. This was the first and hopefully only time she'd let this happen. In the future, it was clearly safer to experiment with new forms well away from other humans or mutants. Especially other mutants.
Following Jack's lead, Amber grabbed some paper towel as well and began using it to address her wounds. The bleeding was all ready beginning to slow due to the unique nature of her blood. Even serious wounds rarely bled for long because her blood was so thick and viscous. Infection was still a potential problem, of course, but she'd deal with that when she was alone. The pain of the wounds were sharp but, given her experience with pain, relatively easily ignored.
Once both her own wounds and the other girl's were tended to, she spoke. "I'm ready to face my punishment." Whatever it was, she deserved it.

"Not my first time," she agreed. "I was here when I was still naive and learning about what it was to be a mutant." Before she'd even discovered her powers, in fact. She'd known, by then, what she was but what if she had been one of those unlucky sorts of mutants with nothing but an unusual look and a handicap to show for her unique DNA? They did exist. Living in Sanctuary, she'd met them. All of the disadvantages of being a mutant and therefore being hated and ostracized by the world, with none of the advantages that came with amazing powers. For them, she reserved the greatest of sympathy. How unfortunate it must be to be seen as the dregs of society with nothing to make you special.
"The faces are the things that change. They're the things that give a place like this light and life." Funny, perhaps, for a half dead girl like her to be speaking of light and life, but she felt her words to be true. Concrete and glass made a mere shell to shelter from the elements; it was those who resided inside that made the shelter something truly special.
"I've been to the Amazon jungles. I didn't find any lost civilization, but I did find very good hunting." She smiled, showing teeth, a slightly feral glint in her eyes. Of course, her mind had been trapped in that of a dinosaur at the time but that was besides the point. "If you would like to hunt with a partner I would be happy to oblige. It's rare I have another to hunt by my side, despite being a pack animal by nature. Talking, however, is difficult when shifted. I lack proper human vocal chords." An unfortunate handicap but one she'd learned to work around.
