Character
Personality: David is very oddly put together. He moves to the beat of his own drum which (unbeknownst to him) beats at a much slower pace than others would expect of a boy his age. Outside of basketball, eating and frequent napping he doesn’t exhibit much effort in much of anything. His nonchalant attitude also incites negativity from his superiors and at times his friends, as he tends to come off as someone who doesn’t care. This isn’t usually the case, but he does have a hard time keeping focused and tends to have his head in the clouds. He’s also mildly selective of friends, preferring to hang with people who (like him) don’t ask too much of the world, if not only to be allowed to live peacefully.
Also, to people that he does become close friends with, he is a very loyal and compassionate person who seems to genuinely care about people other than himself. In other words; being his friend can be difficult, but once he’s there he’s not going anywhere.
But underneath his mellow and absent minded exterior, he has a very childish and at times violent side to him that not many people get to see. This is mostly due to him seldom having to deal with high stakes situations and also his inability to take the steering wheel when things turn south. He is very easily broken when things begin to fall apart at a rate greater than what he’s used to and thus prefers not to take on leadership roles (contradictory to his playing at the Point Guard position) . It’s also why he prefers to have a small circle of friends, as he knows how inconsistent he can be when it comes to being dependable.
Hobbies/ Interests: Basketball, food,
Job or part time job and description: Student
Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Responsibility, high stakes situations, having his ankles snap during games.
Special talents: skilled slasher point guard and shooting guard playing basketball.
Morality
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Neutral. He has yet to be confronted by anything bad enough for him to be good or bad just yet, and for the most part chooses to stay out of mutant/ human affairs. And because of his inability to make big decisions for people, he tries to avoid conflict as much as possible. That being said, he will most certainly fight for his friends and at the young and impressionable age of 17, can be swayed either way. He’s just looking for that reason to pick up the sword.
Mutations
Mutation description:
Sensory Deprivation
David’s Mutation allows him to create a dome like structure centered around his body, with a 10ft radius which extends out in all directions. This structure (for as long as he remains within its boundary) remains stationary at the point by which it was set. He calls this area the Zone. Anyone inside the Zone who isn’t touching David is temporarily stripped of 4 of the 5 human senses; sight, sound, scent and taste, but are still able to feel. These effects last for as long as they are in the Zone. Once the Zone is set, it remains as long as David is in it, or until he himself is no longer able to keep it up (unconscious or dead). Other than that, the Zone will only ever disappear if David leaves it, or is forced from it. The Zone itself is invisible from the outside, but on the inside those who are immune to the sensory deprivation, cannot see past the black spherical boundary. Also the boundary can be travelled in and out of freely by anyone, but the effects only last for as long as they are in it.
Strengths:
David is able to create his Zone’s without any tax on his physical and or mental well being, which means he can drop another Zone immediately after breaking from a previous one.
The Zone’s sensory deprivation gives David an advantage over people in combat, as he (and anyone touching him) is still able to fight with all 5 of their senses. A huge advantage when fighting against a (temporarily) deaf and blinded opponent. Also since they are still able to feel, if it takes more than one strike to end a fight they will still feel the pain from each of his attacks.
It can also be used as a great getaway tool, if found in a particularly sticky situation. Theoretically, he could put 20 ft in between him and an assailant, which is more than enough space for an athlete to make a run for it.
Since the Zone is invisible from the outside, groups of enemies (with the exception of those with ranged weapons) that are coerced into fighting him up close, can be tricked into the Zone without anyone outside seeing it.
Lastly, since the Zone extends out 10ft in every direction, he gets a 10ft defensive barrier from enemies who try to dive from above, or attack from below. This can help a lot when caught in an ambush, or sneak attack.
Weaknesses and Limitations:
Because of the 10 ft barrier, David has to be in at a relatively close range in order to be effective. This could be particularly dangerous for David against an armed opponent, as if he sets a Zone too early, his opponent can fall back instinctively out of the Zone (and out of David’s sight) and fire off an attack that David can’t see.
Also, David can only set one Zone at a time, and must stay within that Zone in order to keep it up. This means that he cannot set up an elaborate set of Zones, and must be cautious of where and when he sets them. This also means that if set incorrectly, David must find a way out of his Zone in order for it to disappear. Since he can’t see past the barrier, this could cause him to walk straight into danger.
The sensory deprivation qualities of the Zone, have no effect on machinery or telepathic abilities. So if someone were to send a drone or a camera into the zone, they’d be able to see him through the footage (but the Zone would remain invisible to it). Also, mutants who could track, communicate or attack with telepathic abilities, would still be able to sense where David is (so long as there telepathic abilities weren’t affected by their absent senses.)
Since anyone touching David is immune to the Zones effects, if an enemy is able to grab a hold of David they too will be immune (with the exception of not seeing past the barrier). This means that if David engages in a struggle/wrestling situation, his power becomes useless until he separates from his opponent. Also, with each (melee) attack that David manages to land, his opponent (if still conscious) is able to briefly regain their senses and in turn see where the barrier ends. At which point, all they have to do is remember and walk out.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Has the proportionate strength, speed and stamina of a 6ft 3in athlete that trains sub regularly. His ability to see the field makes him a great strategist and his reflexes (and depth perception) make him quite the deadeye when reacting to movements.
Fighting Style: Dirty. David hasn’t trained in any formal martial art, but that being said he does know where to hit most people to end a fight quick enough (jaw, ribs, crotch etc.) and is not above striking below the belt.
Fighting Style Pros/Cons:
Pros: Not too many pro’s per se, but any strike from a person his size and build is going to hurt.
Cons: His style of fighting is quite sloppy and reckless, so any missed strike leaves him wide open for counters.
History Of Your Character
David Jianlian, (born Tavita Fonua) was the middle child of parents Adalheida Schwalger and Ioane Fonua who lived in Auckland city New Zealand. After a dispute the couple split up and Adalheida took custody of David and his brothers Jacob (born Iakopo; youngest brother) and Trevor (born Tauvaga; eldest brother) but after 3 months was forced to give them up to an orphanage. It was there that the three brothers developed a strong bond for one another and for the people who came in and out of the orphanage. There the trio stayed for five years, until David caught the eyes of Bing and Miranda Jianlian. The trio were adopted all together and travelled to the States where they would rebuild their lives with their new parents.
David and his brothers were fortunate enough to be raised in the suburbs of Chino Hills California by their new and loving parents, where they would attend high school and develop their love for basketball. For all three brothers however (David especially) adapting to the American schooling system was particularly difficult, and David was placed in special education. For David it was more of an effort thing, rather than an inability to learn. He had never been in a classroom without his brothers before and without their encouragement to learn, his motivation to succeed in class began to fade. He instead put all his effort into his sporting ability, as he and his brothers all flourished on the basketball court. But because of his neglect towards his studies, David was the only one of the 3 brothers not to be offered a college scholarship. Regardless, David was an extreme talent on the court and was most likely headed for the NBA (albeit undrafted).
2 years had passed and not much had changed. The boys managed to carry the basketball team to the finals and with Trevor being 18, this would be the Trio’s last high school game together. This was also when David’s Mutation first manifested.
The clock was down to 13 seconds, and their team was down by 3 points with no timeouts remaining. Trevor inbounded the ball to David who ran down the court and stopped at the top of the key. He pulled for the shot, drawing in 2 defenders, instead passing the ball behind his back to Trevor who drove in for a layup. The crowd stood up as the ball hit the backboard and bounced out off the rim.The whistle blew, the ref signalling the shooting foul. Trevor stood at the foul line as players took their positions on the floor. The ref called out “you got two” before bouncing the ball to Trevor. Trevor went through his routine, taking the ball around his hips once and dribbling twice before taking the shot; swish. The crowd went absolutely silent. The score was now 83-81. “You got one” the referee went to bounce the ball to Trevor who hastily put his hand up. “One sec ref” the official nodded as Trevor called David over. He put his head to David’s ear and whispered,
“I’m missing this one bro.”
David knew exactly what Trevor was asking. He looked up at the clock, 3.7 seconds left. He looked back at his brother,
“Yeah i got you.”
Trevor nodded returning to the line. David positioned himself directly behind Trevor who was now going through his routine. He took the ball around his waist and dribbled the ball twice. David’s knees were now shaking. Trevor lifted the ball to shoot, but instead bounced the ball off the rim and back into his hands. He quickly threw the ball behind his head, to David who was waiting patiently. The ball bounced into his hands as a defender sprinted towards him; he pulled up taking the shot he’d made a million times over. Then it all went black.
He could no longer see the hoop and his defender tripped over himself falling to the floor. On instinct he shot the ball, hearing the buzzer and the crowd shortly after. He could see his team mate Daniel stood in front of him frozen. “I can’t see sh*t, I can’t see sh*t!” another voice called out “bro what are you talking about?”. A pair of arms peered in through the darkness shaking Daniel by the shoulders, “We just freaking won bro!”. Daniel let out a scream heard by the entire gym, “WHAT THE F*CK!”. He shoved in the direction of where the arms were coming from, only to fall flat on his back. He curled up on the floor, covering his ears and shouting “SOMEBODY HELP ME!”. David ran to Daniel, cradling him in his arms, “bro, tell me what’s wrong!”. Daniel opened his teary eyes “David… what’s happening to me man…”.
David looked up to see his team mates running into the darkness, one by one they tripped over one another. None of them seemed able to see inside the darkness, except for David. He stood up and backed away slowly, as he separated from Daniel he saw the hope in his eyes disappear. He continued to pace his way backward until finally, the darkness twisted and tore itself out of existence. His team mates were all either crying on the floor, or frozen in fear and confusion. He turned to see his brothers staring back wide eyed. Before they could say anything, he ran.
He ran and ran until he finally got home. He opened the door and saw His mother in the kitchen “oh David honey? I told you three to call after-” David threw himself into his mother's arms and cried silently.
“I’m sorry ma.”
“Sorry? Baby what’s wrong?”
He didn’t respond. He wasn’t very talkative to begin with and his mother knew this, but it didn’t stop her from asking. After a while she took him to his room and layed him down, kissing his forehead before making her way to the door.
“I’m going to go pick up your brothers now. You rest up and we’ll go get dinner when i come back okay…”
David didn’t respond.
“I love you.”
His mother shut the door and made her way out.
“I love you too”
David immediately began packing his bags. He knew what happened and he knew what he was. He was a threat. His family would never be safe with him around and that meant he had to leave. He packed some clothes, and took $3000 from Trevor’s streetball shoebox, and with a basketball in hand he left. With no goodbyes and no destination in mind, he just needed to get as far away from his family as possible.

“Well, this sucks ass”, a pressed David thought to himself. After living a relatively affluent life in the suburbs of Chino Hills, he was still getting used to the gritty atmosphere of cheap hotel living. Specifically the grime splattered walls, sharp pungent stench and the moans of his less than considerate neighbours. Still he laid on the stained mattress, his feet dangling off the end; staring at a single fly crawling aimlessly on the ceiling.
“I wonder if they miss me...” He rested his head in his hands.
“It’s been almost two months now yknow? I mean i know i didn’t bring no phone or nothing, but how hard is it to find your own kid?” he now turned to his side to face the lone open window. A light breeze blew through the curtains to reveal the glow of New York City in the distance. He could make out the feeble sound of a police siren from somewhere out there.
“At times i wonder if they’re still even alive… i’ve heard some stuff yknow? About what they do to kids like me. To their famil-” He cut himself off, not allowing him to finish that thought.
“Nah Trevor wouldn’t let nothing happen to nobody. He’s built like that aye, the big man; the leader. But don’t tell him i said that.” He cracked a smile, a rare facial expression even before the incident. He never knew how much he looked up to his brothers, until they were no longer together. The thought of not having them by his side made him feel vulnerable, but at the same time he felt somewhat independent and ‘leader-like’. ‘This is some sh*t Trevor would do’; something David would think to himself, partly to validate his actions and also to feel a little better for whatever misfortune may (or may not) have befallen his family.
“But in saying that, i can’t say i’m too happy with the fact that they let me stay in this sh*thole. By myself. To talk to a fly-” He turned back to the ceiling, once again resting his head in his hands. The fly was nowhere to be seen.
“Typical.”
