The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Normally, Natalie was pretty specific about what she let her daughter consume. Obesity was on the rise in North America and most foods that lined the shelves of any given super market contained more awful ingredients than she could count on both hands. Harmful chemicals, carcinogens, and other terrible things that she never wanted her child to have to experience. It had been when Norah was only a year old that she had the opportunity to work with one of the current partners on a large lawsuit case against a fast food agency for their use of dangerous chemicals in their foods. That had been what turned her.
Still, every once and awhile, there were exceptions to that rule. Mostly it was holidays and special events that came along once a year or so. It made those times all the more special for Norah, which Natalie also enjoyed. She was now getting to bake a pie with her father, which Natalie was sure she would never forget.
She stood on the other side of the kitchen, working away on the mashed potatoes. In went some butter, salt, and milk to give it the right consistency, all while she was listening in on the conversation a few feet away from her.
Natalie knew a little about Nate’s heritage, but not a whole lot. What she knew was that his dad hadn’t been around and that he had lost his mother early on as well. Because of that, he had been drawn to a life of crime. Certainly not an excuse, but she could see his point of view. As much as Natalie resented her parents, she was glad that she had at least had them in her life as a child. Growing up without them would have been a whole other story.
”I’m glad you’re in my family, daddy,” Norah smiled up at him innocently. There was so much good in her that sometimes Natalie wasn’t even sure if she was her daughter.
Natalie wandered closer to them, bowl of mashed potatoes in hand. ”I am too,” she added quietly, smiling at Norah and then at Nate. She placed her hand on top of his, which was still wrapped around their daughter. A full family wasn’t ever something that Natalie had pictured herself having, but she was so glad that she did, and she was so glad that it was with the two of them.
Admittedly, just changing the photograph on someone’s ID badge would be a much easier task then to try to focus on changing the appearances of two living, moving, breathing women. While she could control and anticipate her own actions, she wouldn’t always know what Noel was going to do. Plus, from what she knew about her, the woman’s actions could be a little sportatic. There was no telling exactly what she would get up to - or into - if left to her own devices.
Still though, there was a chance that taking the easier route would take down their entire plan if people talked to each other or really got to know one another where they were going. If it would be strange for a new face to walk in like they owned the place, then there was no sense in trying to make the process simpler. They would be taking a chance by cutting corners.
”Let’s start with finding people to replace. If we can get people that we look relatively similar to, that would be ideal, but otherwise just stick to two females.” The cogs in Natalie’s mind were turning and she was doing her best to plot something reasonable out. They probably would have been better off discussing things earlier, but as much as Natalie was a natural planner, she didn’t want to have to spend any longer with Noel than she needed to.
>>"Do you shoot?"
Natalie raised an eyebrow and looked at Noel dead on. Did she shoot? Seriously? ”Of course I don’t,” she huffed, smoothing her dress. ”I’m usually on the other side of this kind of thing. Action isn’t really my wheelhouse.”
She was still surprised that she was even standing there. When she had joined Haven it had been under the impression that she would be handling all the legal work, not her fellow “team members”. Those days she did far more personal work than she cared for. It served her right for joining an organization founded by a psychologist.

Potatoes in the pot. She could definitely do that. While Natalie was more than used to doing her own thing in the kitchen, she was alright with Nate calling the shots every once and awhile. It was nice not to have to plan everything or to have to take on the brunt of the work. She could take a step back and just mash the potatoes if she wanted to, and that was what she was going to do.
Natalie hefted the pot over to the sink and watched as the water drained from the side. In the middle of the stream, she set a strainer down on the bottom of the sink to catch the potatoes that came with the bottom of the water. With all the contents gone from the pot, she set it back down on the countertop and got to work on the real task.
She put the potatoes back in the pot, grabbed the masher, and set to work. She eyed Nate while doing so, admiring him as he worked. He did have a way about doing things that was easy to watch. Plus, he had made the coffee.
Norah stood from her seat with a paper in hand. Proudly, she proclaimed, ”I’m finished!” She then ran over and set the book down on the only free space on the countertop, giving it its deserved attention.
”It’s beautiful,” Natalie commended, setting down the masher and crouching to give her daughter a hug. For a six year old, it was actually not too bad. The colours were fairly well matched. There was no doubt in Natalie’s mind as to where she had inherited that talent. ”What do you think - is it fridge-worthy?”
”I agree.” Natalie took the paper from the counter and walked over to the fridge, where she stuck it to the metal surface with a ‘g’ magnet. With her hands on her hips, she turned back around and faced her daughter. ”Alright, now how about you help with dinner. Would you like to help me or Daddy?”
”I did,” Natalie nodded in response to his question. She had actually slept better the past night than in a long time. ”Thanks for letting me sleep.” It was nice to be able to know that things wouldn’t crash and burn if she left the house to itself with Nate there to keep things in order. The ex-con had seriously turned his life around for the better. He was trustworthy with their daughter, he could cook, and he was actually good to her. That thought nearly made her want to backtrack and give him a kiss.
She kept walking, though; only turning back to give him a quick wink. It was still uncharacteristic of her, but she was working on being a bit more affectionate. After being a single mother for so long, it was a strange thing to be able to turn around and try to let her hair down.
Natalie strode through the kitchen and stopped behind Norah to look over her shoulder at the girl’s drawing. She had taken after her father in the artistic sense, with her colour-coordinated costume and the expertly filled-in lines. She was already showing signs of having a career in art if she kept working at it.
”I love it. Have you thanked your dad?”
Norah shook her head and then turned around in her chair. ”Thank you, Daddy!” With that, she turned back around and set straight back to work. ”What colour should I make her mask?”
Natalie thought about it for a second. ”Light purple,” she suggested, reaching for the crayon and setting it down next to the page to be grabbed easily. Norah grinned and picked it up immediately, which made Natalie smile. With artistic talent and a drive, she could go far. Natalie bent down and kissed her daughter on top of the head before walking back to the kitchen.
With her coffee mug in one hand, Natalie used the resolve that she had worked up to place her hand on Nate’s back. ”What can I do to help?” she asked him. It was strange to be asking that question in her own kitchen, where she was usually calling the shots. It wasn’t a bad feeling at all.

It was a weekday and she wasn’t working. Lately, that had even become a novelty for most weekends. Weekdays, though… that was unheard of unless Natalie tapped into her vacation time, which she rarely did. It was really only when, a few times a year, the whole country put a hold on work and took some time as a holiday. A few years in a row, she had even been called in on Thanksgiving, and, one time, Christmas eve, but those had been for client emergencies. Since she was higher up in the company than she had been at that point, Natalie had been assured that that wouldn’t be the case this time around.
That all meant that she had some time to actually enjoy the holiday. Enjoy it with everyone that included.
Nate and her were dating. It had been over a month since that change had taken place, and still it was unusual for her to really think about. Dating monogamously was not meant to be in the cards for her, and yet there Nate was. He had no intention to hold her down, but he did what she had assumed that no man could do: he had made her care.
The caring went both ways. Natalie was allowed to sleep in while Nate cooked. She wasn’t usually one to waste her day like that, but since her last week had been spent preparing for a huge trial, she had been running on fumes for the few days before her vacation and her body thanked her for the extra time. She awoke around nine am, which was three hours past the time she thought of as a usual benchmark wakeup time.
Since there was no one to impress, Natale skimped on a few of her usual routines. She showered, did her hair and makeup, and wore her dress down jeans and sweater. Designer, of course, but it was still not something that she would be caught going into any office in.
Natalie followed the smell of things being cooked out into the kitchen, where she saw Nate carefully preparing a tray of overcooked bread and Norah colouring on the kitchen table. It was such a domestic scene that it had made Natalie do a double take. The man she was seeing was off cooking, while their child coloured quietly at a table. It was strange how many things had changed in such a short period of time.
”Good morning,” Natalie greeted cordially. She was still working on getting over her reservations about affectionate language and PDA. After taking a mug from one of the cupboards, she poured herself some coffee, smiled at Nate, and then turned to Norah. ”What’re you drawing?”

Everything that Natalie had assumed would knock Kristoph off his game had only given him more platforms to prove that he could adapt to whatever situation he was presented with. She watched him from across the table curiously, taking in the fact that she was seated across from a comically large man in a suit, all while eating at one of the most expensive restaurants she knew of.
It would probably make Nate laugh...
Natalie cleared her throat, readjusted her seating positioned, and chuckled politely as she pretended to be paying attention to what Kristoph had just said. That was why she was there, wasn’t it? To get her brain off of Nate? It was under the premise of a business meeting, but if he had really invited her out purely for business reasons, then she was losing her judgement touch.
>>”I’ll have to take your word on the caviar. I’m afraid the last time I had it was on assignment and I was far too busy to really get to enjoy it.”
”Mm,” Natalie agreed absently, forcing herself to check back into the conversation. It was far too easy to get lost in thoughts of Nate, and that was not her intention for the evening. ”I suppose it’s a good thing that you’ll get the chance to try it today,” she concluded. That’s why the tasting menu was there, was it not?
Almost as soon as she’d finished pointing that fact out, their waiter reappeared with a small dish in hand. He set it down between the two of them and then stood back up straight, his head held high. “Oysters and pearls,” he informed them simply. With that, he was off; back to the kitchen to retrieve something for another table.

Natalie hadn’t expected all that much from Kristoph, if she was being honest. He was a great distraction, but she wouldn’t have bet on him for anything important. At first glance, he looked like an oaf stuffed in a suit. However, he was starting to surprise her a little. He had been perfectly agreeable during their meeting, and the same afterward. Someone might have even gone as far as to call it slightly charming.
Still, she didn’t know how well he would do in a situation that required so much poise. Natalie watched him subtly from across the table as he examined his menu, half expecting him to make some noise of confusion at the vast number of French words. Instead, he seemed to be reading with a fair amount of ease. It was interesting that both French and English had translated perfectly between the two universes.
>>”If you’re expecting me to scratch my head, grunt, and demand to know where the beer and burgers are, I assure you that I’m a bit more well-behaved than that. Takes a few drinks before I’m that level of rowdy. The Sirloin of Miyazaki Wagyu sounds exceptional.”
Natalie let off a soft laugh at the comment. That was as much as she would let herself show in a “business meeting” like that. Lots of male lawyers liked to come off as extremely charming, but to Natalie, they always seemed like they were just schmoozing their way through life. That was not how she wanted to be. If she received a few “ice queen” comments for that choice, then so be it.
”Forgive me,” Natalie said, looking back down at her own menu. ”Though you do have to admit that you look a tad out of place.” Across the table, she set her own menu down in response. ”The caviar here is excellent.”
She looked up as a waiter stopped in front of their table holding a bottle of wine. “This is the chef’s pick for the evening,” he told them. “A lovely Spanish red, Castiglione.” He then leaned over and poured two glasses for them and left the bottle at the table.
Kissing Nate felt so incredibly right. It felt as if they’d dropped all barriers and pretenses and could finally be themselves. Together. In that moment, she was more than glad that she had given him a second chance so that they could experience that time together. She pulled him closer to her, wanting to remove any and all distance that might have still existed between them. Close was never close enough.
Her head bucked in response to him breaking away to lock the door, her head dropping a little and her hands instinctively travelling up to her lips in shock. Who knew that something could be that addicting? She felt so entirely out of control, but despite everything, she liked it.
When he returned, she let him take charge without argument. She felt herself be lifted onto the desk, which only made her reach behind her and sweep things away to make more room. Only the picture on her desk and her laptop got careful enough attention to be placed lovingly on the chair behind the desk.
It was unusual for her to be that much of a team player in any situation, but she thought that just that once, she could let it slide. Nate could have his fun this once, and then he could see what he was really getting into. Besides, at that point, she wanted him bad enough not to argue with the way that she got him.
>>”We’re going to have to go to HR at some point. This is definitely fraternization.”
”At some point,” Natalie breathlessly pointed out. Some point was not that point. That point was for other things. She tugged at his shirt and popped open a few buttons with hasty fingers before pulling him, as best she could from her position, onto the desk with her. ”Now shut up about the paperwork and kiss me.”
A real date for a real couple. They were going to be real. That was the best thing that Natalie had heard in a very long time. It was good enough to even make her crack a hint of a smile, in fact. She figured it was a good use of one of those rare things.
No longer would their nights together just be “friendly encounters”, and they could talk to each other honestly. They could go out to dinner without a reason other than the fact that they wanted to spend time together. A real couple. They would be a real couple. Natalie had never felt like that before, but she was glad that she was feeling that way about Nate, of all people. Things were going to be good, even if they would be a little rocky for awhile.
Again, he told her that he loved her, just like a real loving partner would say. Natalie’s smile grew wider and she pressed herself into the kiss that he leaned in to give her. God, it felt good to be kissing him like that. No shame or guilt necessary. She wanted more. They started out relatively innocent, which gave Natalie butterflies like some young girl. Then, the more that each of them felt the draw, the more the fire between them heatened.
She stepped backward in time with him until she was pressed up against her desk in the heat of the moment. ”It locks,” Natalie told him breathlessly, ”top latch.” With that information cleared up, she leaned back into him hungrily, ”You forget I’m also an illusionist.” Not that she would have enough conversation to cover for what he was talking about.

The anger in the pit of Natalie’s stomach had been replaced with something else. It was a feeling that she wasn’t really used to; it was different than what she usually felt around Nate. Instead of wonder and the fear that he wouldn’t feel the same way about her, she was hopeful about what might be. Now that there was confirmation and her anger was sated, she could focus on what she really wanted to feel.
She blinked up at him through wide blue eyes, unsure of what to do with herself now. She had never been in a situation like that before, where she didn’t have the upper hand and she was being well and truly vulnerable. If he had only fallen for the strong Natalie, then he would have to come back at another time. She felt weak in the knees, like some childish schoolgirl.
Natalie placed her hand on top of his on her shoulder and thought about what he was saying for a second. He wanted them. There was going to be a them. Just the two of them, making something work.
The two of them and Norah, anyway.
She hadn’t really thought that much about what would happen to Norah. She had thought long and hard about the consequences of them not speaking, but not much about what would happen if they started really seeing each other. How was that going to work? She had no idea where to even start.
They had to tell her. She was perceptive, and Nat knew that she already had an inkling that something was wrong, so hopeful hearing that her parents were back on good terms would be good for her. The thing that she was worried about was how good of terms they happened to be on.
”I… I love you too, Nate,” she said meekly. She was happy, but she also felt so strange, standing there like that. It was going to take some getting used to. ”Norah will understand, I think. We can do what we can to make it as easy as possible for her.”
Now that there wasn’t the same anger burning deep inside of her, Natalie felt free enough to let herself go a little. She’d been so pent up for a week, just waiting for the perfect moment to either let her feelings go or to blow up, but now that it was there, she didn’t know what to do with it. The simplest course of action was to just step forward and put even less distance between the two of them.

The large, redheaded man likely thought that he was being oh-so-charming by offering to show her around the other side of the rip. Natalie simply raised her eyebrow at him. She’d been charmed many times before, and as a lawyer, she liked to consider herself immune to it. Of course, that little myth had been busted before, but not by him. Watching the large, burly man try to appear gentlemanly just made her chuckle a little.
She had approached the hostess and given her a business card, which was a surefire way to ensure that they got a table in the restaurant. Otherwise, they likely would have been sent out the way that they came in. Natalie flashed a quick smile at the hostess as she gathered two menus and gestured for them to follow her into the main seating area.
>>”And I thought I was the intimidating one…”
The brunette gave a quick glance toward Kristoph with her eyebrow, yet again, raised. ”I’m not sure what you were expecting,” she said simply, as if the comment hadn’t given her a little boost of confidence that she had needed. Natalie had been in such a strange place lately that the bit of esteem boosting that he offered her was exactly what she needed. A day to forget about the man she couldn’t really have.
The hostess led them to a cozy table off to a corner of the seating area. There were very few tables in the area at all, and other than the one that they were led to, there was only one that hadn’t been seated at, which had a little reserved sign to claim it. They had gotten the only walk-in table.
“Your waiter will be with you shortly,” the hostess said as they sat down.
Natalie gave a curt nod in the place of the thank-you before she sat down across from her new business associate. She picked up the menu and scanned it quickly, keeping her eyes on Kristoph as much as she could. She was interested to see how he would fare in this situation.
