The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Oh, you definitely need more practice," Lee replied, grinning when he winked at her. "A lot more practice."
But this really wasn't the time for this, at all, and Lee still had a plan to come up with.
And Will and Quin were still trying to make sense of what was going on. Not surprising considering they hadn't been called to join in this fight by Michael afterall. "It's that mystic," Lee explained over her shoulder. "She's brought her king, but she's still got the ankh and it sounds like bringing more people. The main goal is to get the ankh away from her, and keep it secure. Secondarily is to take her down, if we can."
Easier said than done, Lee was sure. Even without the ankh, the woman was still a mystic with magic at her disposal.
They were approaching the museum now and Lee could feel her heartrate speed up slightly.
"We'll meet up with the others, pick a way in with only a few people guarding the door and I'll put them down for a nice long sleep," Lee said in response to Tarin's trailed off question. The problem was, beyond that, Lee still really didn't know.
And yet, even after the previous day, Quin didn't have much plastic on her. Lee frowned slightly. She wasn't sure what would actually be available in there that the woman would be able to use. And if there was some, but was part of an exhibit, it wouldn't be right to use it. Who knew what damage that might cause to an artifact.
"The gift shop," Lee said after a few moments as they stepped into the museum's parking lot. "There's probably plenty of things made of plastic on there, Quin."
That's when Lee noticed the markings on the vehicle; X-Men. Not at all surprising given what was happening in the city.
What was surprising to Lee was the fact that Lee sensed that they were still in the vehicle despite the time that had passed since the spirits had gathered the information.
"Looks like we're meeting four others," Lee told the group.
Squeezing Tarin's hand as they stepped up to the vehicle, Lee breathed a sigh of relief when she saw the blonde in the passenger seat.
Then she saw the person in the back with the riot gear and shotgun. "I do not want to be shot today," she told him firmly. "So if you shoot that with me anywhere around, I swear to God, Ashton, it will no longer be functional."

It wasn't an important question, Tarin said after she had kind of not answered it.
"Honestly, I've never really thought about it before," Lee admitted to Tarin after a couple moments of comfortable silence. "I mean, I found out I was good at handling the books for the shop, then later managing our investments and accounts, so it was a practical decision when I went back to school."
"Then just kind of fell into working at the bar, and because he didn't want me to quit when the rift closed, Matt let me start working how I do now. As long as orders and payroll are always on time, it can be as flexible as I need it to be, for Kevin or anything else I want to do. So I really have never thought about what I'd do instead."
Why would she consider another job, especially one that would require strict working hours? Her arrangement with Matt ensured that she made enough for day to day. And while she'd had to draw on her investments interest payments rather than reinvesting it more than she'd wanted the year or had been just her and Kevin in the apartment, she'd been far from going broke.
"Though I guess with Kevin at the mansion now," Lee continued as they turned into the street the bar was on. "I can do some more exploring, see if I find anything I want to do to fill that time."

Tarin wasn't sure what might have been different this year with the July 4th holiday. Sure, it wasn't like Lee had done a poll at the time to see if she had been right, but Lee had ideas about what had made it different this year, and as far as she was concerned, the spike in business that weekend proved her right.
"The holiday was a Thursday this year?" Lee offered in explanation. "I'm guessing quite a few people would have taken the Friday off, too. So they had lots of time to party, and still have the whole weekend to recover before work."
The next couple years were going to be quite a bit busier that holiday weekend as well, since it would actually fall on the weekend. But then the 4th would fall early in the week again.
"You know, he probably did," Lee replied with a shake of her head after a moment. "It took a while, but he probably realized I was right about upgrading the security and sound systems when he bought the place. He might have wanted me to work at the bar then, but Kevin was born not long after he got the loan."
What would Lee have wanted to do if she hadn't been working at the bar the last 7 years?
That was something Lee had to actually think about, and she did that as she walked along a short way in silence. She'd simply worked what jobs she was able to get to survive before the shop. Then she'd gone to school in Toronto and helped Rachel open the boutique before ending up at the bar and Haven.
"I'm not entirely sure," Lee admitted after a few more moments. "I seem to have a knack for business, after having a hand in three of them in the city. The training I've done with Quin has been rewarding, but that's not really a job…"

Lee had ordered a lot of alcohol to have on hand for the July 4th weekend that year. But they still hadn't even come close to running out like Matt had kept worrying about.
Lee was the worrier, but that man was almost impossible to make relax when it came to having enough liquor and beer in the bar.
"We did sell a lot this year," Lee confirmed with a bit of a nod as she looked up at Tarin. "More than I had thought we would, and I had already been expecting it to be busier than the previous two years. Still, we didn't come close to running out."
That's why Matt had her? Because he was an idea person and she was an execution person?
"He's also damn lucky to have me, because I never planned to work at the bar," Lee told Tarin. "Shortly after I moved back to New York with Rachel, we went out. Matt practically begged me to manage the bar for him. I guess his old manager had recently quit, and he had an actual vacation coming up in a week. Then I just…never stopped." Lee finished with a shrug.

Lee smiled, ducking her head slightly when Tarin said she would always be better company. How could she not when he skinned that sincere as he said it?
It didn't take long for them to get outside and the shop to be locked up. Then they were heading down the street toward the bar.
Lee couldn't help but laugh when Tarin mentioned her son's judgement on what was interesting. Because apparently what Lee described as her job at the bar was of interest to Tarin.
"Did I mention it then?" Lee questioned. It was quite possible. "Matt tends to panic a bit about making sure we have enough on busy long weekends, but any time I try to show him the numbers from previous years that we should have more than enough, his eyes kind of glaze over."
Lee shook her head with a bit of a smile. Her old friend was great at running the bar, but at the same time also sucked at it. "With how he is any time I show him things like that…but his business plan was great when he got the loan to buy the place."

Tarin thought that she was better company than his clients, did he? Normally she would agree with that. Normally these visits to the shop went very differently than this.
"I'm not sure that's true today," Lee said, smiling slightly as Tarin took her hand. Because this really wasn't anything like their normal meet ups during the day.
But Tarin didn't need to do anything else before they left. "We might as well go, then," Lee said with a slight nod. The sooner they left and the faster she finished her stuff, the fewer clients Tarin was going to have to cancel that day.
Turning to the door, still holding Tarin's hand, Lee shrugged. "Like Kevin's said before, it's really not that interesting or exciting," she explained as they made their way out of the shop. "Mostly inventory, payroll, and reconciling the money. Though, I do need to put a liquor order in for the weekend. You might be interested in how much alcohol I keep on hand for a normal weekend."
And then Tarin offered her more energy. By now, that wasn't a surprise. If she needed energy, he was always more than willing to offer her some. It didn't matter the time or situation.
But other than what she was taking through the hand she was holding at her normal level, Lee had no intentions of taking more from Tarin that day. Not unless absolutely necessary. Lee was sure that she could manage to get the energy she needed elsewhere, and Tarin could very well end up needing all of the energy he had as well. But he would be unable to replenish that energy in the middle of what was to come. She could.
The spirits could relay what they'd discovered while they walked. That was good. Then came the grin and Tarin poking a bit of fun. "That would be impressive," Lee said, playfully teasing him. "I've seen you try to use your mouth while walking."
Despite the teasing, Lee's attitude returned to being serious as the spirits, including Tony, popped into existence.
And then they were walking as Tony and the spirits were explaining what they had discovered. Which really wasn't much, but it was still a hell of a lot more than they had known a minute ago.
"That will definitely solve the energy problem," Lee agreed as she felt Quin and Will catching up behind them. "As long as there's not too many. One or two in the first group we come across would be best. Three max. If we're lucky enough to actually have any control of that."
Then Lee turned to look over her shoulder at the two younger mutants. "And yes, they are spirits," she confirmed. "Yesterday was just the start, apparently. Michael's dealing with the bigger threat, but asked us to go deal with what's happening at the museum. So Tarin sent some spirits to see what we're dealing with so we can hopefully have some sort of plan going into this."

Tarin didn't say anything when she explained that what she needed to do at the bar would take a while. He didn't say anything, just simply moved his arms from around her.
And immediately pulled his phone out.
As she watched, Tarin tapped away on his phone. Then told her that he now had the next few hours free. Tarin had just actually cancelled appointments without hesitation so that he could walk her to the bar. Even though she had only felt that the adapted was outside of their building.
But that didn't mean the adapted wasn't following, just further away, the catastrophic worrying part of her mind reminded her.
"Thank you, Tarin," Lee said. Part of her felt that it was ridiculous that she needed to have him walk with her. But at the same time, knowing that he was going to be with her, Lee felt much more comfortable and safe about going back out onto the street.
"Should we go now? Or is there something you need to do here first?"

Lee nodded when Tarin said that he would make sure she knew any time that the spirits were there. That did make Lee feel better about this part of the situation. Lee knew that there were always spirits around if Tarin wasn't there with his whole 'not letting them near him' thing going on. But this, with them being asked to specifically watch her, felt different.
Did Lee want Tarin to go with her that day? Lee pretty much always did, but that wasn't exactly what he was asking here. "I was going to the bar," Lee replied. "Possibly need to go to the bank after. And I had been thinking of going to Haven, but I think that's now a no."
Lee closed her eyes for a moment. Even though he had offered, even though she had been working on it, it was still difficult to ask for help. Especially for something that a grown woman shouldn't need help with such as simply walking to work.
"Please," Lee ended up saying as she looked up at Tarin again. "But I'm going to be at the bar for a while, and I don't know how long the bank may take, and you have clients to see."

Lee had no doubts that Tarin would do better. That was not even a question in Lee's mind. When he had made mistakes in the past, or done something Lee hadn't liked, that had been it. Tarin hadn't done it again.
"Not the only one," Lee said with a slight shake of her head. "It is a good idea. I think it's just the idea of being watched on top of everything else right now."
It was his job to watch her. Now that part Lee liked.
Lee took a breath as she looked up at Tarin. "I'll feel better once we future out who this is and what they want," she told him. "I would feel better with it being them, though."

Kevin's father had seen her in the hospital shortly after being found. She had been weak, but she had had some energy again by that point. Tarin had never seen her even close to that state, either energywise or her physical being.
Yet as she stood there with Tarin's arms around her, Lee couldn't help but think that Tarin understood the fear and helplessness that simply being in an adapted's field could make her feel now.
Finally, Lee pulled back from Tarin just enough that she was able to look up at him. "I'll forgive you telling me what to do this time," Lee said, trying to add a little lightness and joking to the situation. She wasn't sure she quite succeeded.
Two, or more, sets of eyes watching things. Over the years, Lee had gotten a lot more comfortable with the knowledge that there were spirits around. Everywhere. More so since she had started working with Tony.
But this felt different.
"It's kind of creepy that they're going to be purposely watching me," Lee said after a couple moments of thought. "But it is a good idea. They'll be able to see things that we don't have a chance of."

Tarin said that she didn't have to explain. Lee simply nodded against his shoulder. Maybe she didn't have to explain, but it was still something that she had needed to do. Something that she didn't think she would be able to stop herself from doing anytime she knew that an adapted was near.
Tarin also acknowledged he knew she wasn't used to feeling like she was then. But this, now, went far beyond simply being scared. Lee had been scared so many times in her life. She had been scared the day of the building collapse that Tarin had been hurt, or worse. Terrified after she'd found him and he said not to touch him. Scared and worried about what her powers were doing to Kevin through most of her pregnancy and his first few years. Terrified during the Registration Act.
This went beyond any of that. Lee felt scared and helpless. She knew what she was capable of in terms of her powers and to protect herself. But with an adapted, none of that mattered.
Lee tensed slightly in Tarin's arms when he continued speaking. He didn't want her to go out on her own anymore? Normally, the suggestion that she couldn't take care of herself, that she didn't know what she was doing, that she shouldn't be allowed to make her own decisions about what she did and where she went would be met with at least some anger and defiance.
A moment later, though, the tension left Lee's body and she nodded against Tarin's shoulder again. If this was Anton and she just hadn't seen him, or it was another adapted with a similar goal, Lee couldn't take care of herself. "Alright, I won't," Lee agreed.
After a few moments, Lee took a breath and started speaking again. "It's not just that I can't siphon," she explained. "I could have enough energy that I would be awake for a week. I can still feel all of that energy in me, but the moment I enter the field, I can't use any of it…"

She'd looked for Anton on her own? Well, of course she had. That had been the first thing Lee had done when she had stepped into the field each day. That day, she'd even started looking before she'd stepped foot outside.
"I had to make sure he wasn't there," Lee explained, though not sure why she had to explain this part of all things. "That he wasn't there outside of our building. But I didn't see him. There hasn't been anyone who looked familiar there all week."
Lee bit her bottom lip as she stood there leaning into Tarin, her eyes closed. Knowing that Tarin didn't think she was worrying over nothing, well it didn't make her worry less about the situation, but it did make Lee feel safer.
And feeling safer now, Lee realized that she hadn't simply been worrying. She had been scared on her way to the shop that day. "Thank you," Lee said softly as she gave Tarin a bit of a squeeze. "I'm not used to feeling like this, so thank you."

When Tarin spoke, Lee just looked up at him at first. Why hadn't she told him sooner? So he didn't think that she was worrying excessively over something that was probably nothing?
Lee squeezed Tarin's hand as he went on to ask more questions. And then he went on to say that she had every right to worry about this. Closing the last little distance between them, wrapping her arms around Tarin as she laid her head against his shoulder. "I was trying to tell myself it was nothing at first," she explained. "We're bound to run across adapteds sometimes. I tend to head to the bar at around the same time most days, so when it happened Tuesday, I told myself I must be just crossing paths with them with their daily routine."
"So I left a bit earlier yesterday," Lee continued quietly, leaning into Tarin. "I'm not in the field long. It was really unnerving that it happened again, but I was trying to not worry. Then today, I left a good half hour later than normal, and was still in whoever's field outside the building."
Lee stopped speaking and slowed her eyes as she took a slightly shaky breath. "It's not him," she whispered after a few moments. "I've looked and haven't seen him. But…"

Without saying anything, after she entered the shop Tarin stepped past her and locked the door. It wasn't unusual for him to do that, or for Lee to lock it herself when she came in, but that was generally done more often for her longer visits to the shop.
Then, after a very quick kiss, Tarin was asking if everything was ok. Because of course Tarin knew that something was wrong. Nevermind the way she had asked to come to the shop so soon after he'd left that morning, but at this point he could probably tell that something was wrong with her with a single look. The same way she could with him.
"Probably?" Lee said, though her voice sounded far from certain. "I don't know. Maybe."
Lee paused and took a breath as she tried to figure out how to explain how the situation, which was probably nothing, was making her feel without sounding crazy.
"There's been an adapted right outside the building every day this week," she ended up saying. "I don't know who it is, or if it's even been the same person. I've been trying to brush it off, but each day it's happened…"
As Lee's words trailed off, she bit her lip. Then after a moment she shook her head and looked up at Tarin. "Sorry, I'm probably just letting myself worry about it more than I should," she finished, her voice quiet.
