The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

”Oh, he’s been interested in learning to fight for years,” Lee said with a bit of a laugh. ”He just didn’t believe I could. Because apparently ‘mums can’t do that’, I believe were his exact words.”
And again with the commenting about shrugging off bullets. Lee simply tensed slightly this time.
But Michael continued explaining about her powers, Lee shook her head slightly. ”I know I didn’t have a great deal of control over mine for a lot of years, but I can’t even imagine them deciding themselves to change on me.”

”So I did hear what I thought I heard,” Lee said, shaking her head. ”I’m really not sure when that started, but it definitely has not made it easier for him to find things he’s misplaced.”
But as Josh continued speaking, a smile grew on Lee’s face. ”It definitely wasn’t something I ever expected to happen, even after we had run into each other again, but yeah, I am happy. And Kevin seems to really like him, too.”
Kevin returned at that point with three plates and set them down. ”If we’re still talking about this, can it not be about mum’s relationship?” Kevin asked as he started pulling containers out of the bag.
Apparently the boy was hungry tonight, Lee thought. ”Did you want to tell your uncle more about your powers, Kev?”

When Keivn saw his uncle’s eyes widen because of what he had said, Kevin made a face. ”Gross. Ew, no,” he said. ”Don’t you know how mum’s powers work? Mum is normally a zombie in the mornings. But she actually has energy in the mornings because she’s close to Tarin when they sleep.”
---
It didn’t take too long for Lee to pay for the food and come back to the living room with the Chinese food.
In time for her to hear a very unexpected comment from her son. ”Uh, why don’t you go get us some plates, Kev?” she asked as she set the food down on the table.
After waiting for Kevin to head to the kitchen, Lee sat and looked over at Josh. ”Do I even want to know what you two were talking about ‘man to man’?”

Kevin knew exactly what they had been talking about. No, not just that, Kevin knew that Lee had had to have very similar conversations a number of other times, with other people.
And was not very happy about the fact that she’d been actively avoiding having these conversations with him around.
Though Kevin did have a bit of a point. He, a 13 year old, understood that Tarin was not his father, despite having the same name and powers. He’d never had any confusion about any of this, and other than the initial awkwardness when Tarin had first moved in as he and Kevin got to know each other, Lee didn't think that Kevin had ever been upset about the situation at all.
”You’re right, Kevin,” Lee agreed. Right about how others should be able to understand since a 13 year old did. Right about how she probably shouldn’t have worked so hard to keep these conversations from him. Right about how Tarin wasn’t his dad, and wouldn’t try to be.
But Lee didn’t specify any of that.
And then Josh was leaning forward, asking Kevin if they were happy and if Tarin was treating them right. Immediately followed by a knock at the door.
”That’s dinner. I’ll be right back,” Lee said, getting up and making her way to the door. This really couldn’t have worked out better. With her out of the room getting the food, there was no way there could be the accusation that she’d somehow influenced what Kevin said about Tarin. Not that she would have been able to; Kevin had too much of the stubbornness from both of his parents for that.
”Tarin is great, Uncle Josh,” Kevin told him sincerely. ”It was a little weird when he first moved in. But mum said that she was helping Tarin with his powers, and it’s been just me and mum here since Aunt Rachel moved out. But Tarin’s pretty cool.
“And, I don’t think I’m supposed to know this,” Kevin continued, his voice dropping slightly. ”But since mum’s started sleeping in Tarin’s room, she’s been a lot more awake, and happier in the mornings.”

”Yes, they were already packed, mum,” Kevin said as he made his way back to the couch. But he stopped before he sat down, looking back and forth between their faces for a moment. He had heard his mum talking, but she’d stopped as soon as he had gotten close.
”What were you talking about?”
”Nothing very interesting,” Lee said with a shrug. ”Just going over some details of your trip.”
Kevin just looked at his mum for a moment, then turned to look at his uncle. ”Oh my god...” Kevin said, rolling his eyes. ”Is this about Tarin again? He’s not my dad! You won’t talk about it when I’m around like I’m a little kid. But then why do I get it and no one else can understand that?”

Lee smiled when Josh made the comment about the pid being really good. ”It was,” Lee confirmed with a smile. ”Even Kevin said that it was good.”
But then Josh went on. Asking about this time. And trying again.
Had he really just asked it that way? Like she was trying to have a do-over?
”First of all, as I said, they are completely different people,” Lee replied after a moment, a slight hardness to her voice. ”Secondly, for the first year or more with your brother, a large part of me was just waiting for him to leave because of my powers. It took forever for me to fully believe it might ‘work’ with him. Third-”
Lee stopped talking suddenly as she realized that she was feeling Kevin moving back toward the living room. Turning toward the hall to the bedrooms, Lee smiled as her son came around the corner. ”You’ve got everything packed? Jeans? Swim suit? Everything’s back in the suitcase?”

Even though they had spent well over half of their lives living apart, not even talking over the phone, some of Josh’s expressions were similar enough to his brother’s that Lee could see a little flash of anger as she was talking about how it was weird for Tarin as well.
But as Josh didn’t voice anything about that, Lee let it go. There were going to be emotions, a lot of different emotions, about this situation. Especially from Josh and Adele. Lee had known one would almost certainly be anger.
Lee didn’t have to manage and deal with their emotions, though. She just needed to explain things and hope that they could understand.
”She’s been talking about that?” Lee asked. ”I didn’t tell her I was seeing anyone. And to be fair, I don’t really know anyone else who bakes and had just called to ask how I didn’t burn my second attempt. I was planning on using canned filling.”

”Maybe not,” Lee agreed softly. ”But even if you didn’t find out tonight, Kevin’s going to talk while he’s down there.
“And I understand, Josh,” Lee continued, giving the older man a small smile. ”It’s weird for him, too. That was the other reason he wasn’t supposed to be here tonight. But yeah, when the rift to that other world closed, he was stuck here and your brother must have gotten stuck on the other side.”
Lee paused, looking at Josh to try and see how he was taking everything before continuing. ”It turned out that he had actually had his own shop in the exact same place. And it’s not like me and Kevin had a use for it ourselves other than for memories, and New York is too expensive to do something like that. So it made the most sense to me to let him take the shop over. Plus, I thought that would make the spirit at the Empire State Building happy.
“But other than having the same name and similar powers, Tarin and your brother are completely different people.”

Lee could tell where this was going, and going quickly, as Kevin explained about Tarin’s powers. Josh’s eyebrows raising were an obvious sign.
Josh hadn’t really known anything about his brother’s powers in their teens beyond the fact that he claimed to see ghosts, but there had been a few in depth conversations that had explained them more than well enough. And while there were some differences between the two men’s powers, those were not something that either Josh or Kevin were going to find out details about.
”What’s Tarin’s last name?”
”Brooks.”
Lee took a deep breath as she bit the inside of her cheek. There it was.
Lee saw Josh just nod at first. Then her former brother-in-law told Kevin to go check his bags. Again.
”Do I have to, mum?” Kevin asked, turning to Lee. ”I’ve already checked them six times since you made me do it last night.”
Kevin was probably only exaggerating slightly.
”You’re uncle has a point, Kev,” Lee replied. ”You’re not going to be riding if you don’t have jeans. Without holes. And your aunt and uncle will not be taking you shopping if you don’t have jeans or your bathing suit, so go check.”
Kevin grumbled a bit, but he got up and made his way to his room. Once she could tell that he was there, Lee turned back to Josh. ”I was going to talk to you about this tonight, bringing it up a lot more tactfully, except the damn refrigeration unit at the bar had other ideas apparently.”

”It hasn’t been nearly that frequent in the last month,” Lee reminded Tarin. And it really hadn’t, because most of the time she was now remembering to turn her siphoning off when certain activities would otherwise leave Lee with enough energy to run circles around him.
Or enough energy to be able to make three laps around the park.
”Oh? Gave Kevin a DVD commentary on the video?”
Lee laughed softly and shook her head, but before she could answer, Tarin was explaining about how Kevin had wanted her to train him after seeing the video.
”It only took 6 years for him to believe I could teach him anything,” Lee said, rolling her eyes slightly. But then Lee tilted her head slightly as she looked at Michael. ”You have a different ‘mode’ for strength that you change to?” she asked, unsure how that would even work.

Lee sat back and smiled happily as she heard Kevin telling his uncle about how his powers had appeared. And about how he would demonstrate except for the fact that he was still draining batteries, not just those in cell phones) every time he put his shield up. It had happened so frequently that Lee had started just automatically plugging her phone in, regardless of what the battery was at, anytime she was in a bedroom.
It really was great, though. Just how smoothly, happily, normally that day had gone. Like how they had gotten the new baseball gloves, Kevin’s mutant powers had just been one more new thing that day. Exciting, surprising, but one was no more out of the ordinary than the other.
But then Kevin explained that the breathing exercise that Tarin had taken him through had helped Kevin get his shield to drop. And that it was the same thing Tarin did with the spirits.
Kevin may not have noticed the frown on Josh’s face, but Lee did. Josh did recover quickly, and congratulated Kevin.
Before questioning Kevin’s offhand comment about Tarin and spirits.
But before Lee was able to say or explain anything, Kevin was. ”Well yeah, Uncle Josh. Tarin sees spirits,” he said as if that fact should have been obvious. ”Well, he can see spirits. Tarin says that he doesn’t really see them anymore unless he wants to because he learned things like the breathing and meditation and some other training when he was younger to learn how to control his powers. They are still always around, though, Tarin told me, even if he’s not seeing them. I guess it’s kind of like for us, too.”
Lee just looked at Kevin for a moment. Apparently he and Tarin had talked more than she knew about since Kevin had gotten his powers for him to know about any of the training Tarin had ‘gotten’ when he was younger.

Could Lee control how much energy, how much speed and strength she used? ”Generally speaking, I can,” Lee answered. ”I definitely have a lot more control of my powers now than I used to. It’s not like it’s an exact science, though, so I can’t do a specific speed or strength or anything like that.” Not at all, Lee thought. Though, maybe if she was actually able to use her speed and strength more often...
"But yes, I can still run at a completely normal pace even when I have the energy to be able to go a lot faster."
Then Michael said that she wasn’t able to control her powers, and that she had been moving faster because Lee had been. Lee couldn’t stop the small smile from appearing as she turned to look at Tarin. ”So I was right when I told Kevin that continuing to try and be faster would be a waste of energy.”

Lee smiled slightly when Josh mentioned Kevin had been talking about his baseball glove. ”He’s definitely got a much better arm than I do,” Lee replied, then looked past Josh at her son. ”You did pack it, right Kev?”
”Yes mum,” Kevin said with a sigh. ”Uncle Josh just asked me about that. It’s already in my bag.”
”That’s good.” The glove had been in the pile of things that Kevin was putting into his backpack for the flight the previous night, but with having had to run to the bar that afternoon, Lee hadn’t had a chance to check that all of that had been packed yet.
”And did Kevin happen to tell you what else happened the day that we got the baseball gloves?” Lee asked Josh. Trying to make it obvious that it wasn’t just Kevin who’d gotten the baseball glove that day. And that it wasn’t even the most important thing that had happened.

Josh didn’t really have anything to say about her coincidence comment. At least he didn’t say anything out loud. But Josh was good with Chinese so off Lee went to the kitchen to order. Which, considering Tarin wasn’t going to be eating there tonight, but Josh was made things simple. The woman who took the orders over the phone already remembered the new additions, so all Lee had to do was call and order her ‘usual’.
Then Lee stood there for a minute thinking. She had planned on bringing this, Tarin, up gradually, telling Josh about who he was. And who he wasn’t.
But Josh already knew who her ‘roommate’ was, and had already started asking questions. Though he hadn’t been pressing too hard.
After a couple more minutes, Lee couldn’t really pretend to take longer without it being obvious, Lee made her way back to the living room. ”It shouldn’t be too long,” she informed them as she sat down on the couch. ”Even though it’s Friday night, the delivery times are actually surprisingly quick.
“So what were the two of you talking about while I was gone?”

Lee shrugged slightly when Josh commented on how fast Tarin had left. ” He's got a very busy day today,” Lee explained. ”We didn't even think he'd be here at all before you and Kevin left tonight, but with me having to run to the bar, I practically begged him to come stay with Kevin while I was gone.”
”Like Tarin would complain about that, mum,” Kevin said, which surprised Lee. She had thought he was engrossed in the game. ”He was sitting here watching baseball most of the time. That’s much better than working.”
”It’s better than working the weekend, Kev,” Lee said to her son before turning her attention back to Josh. ”And honestly, coincidences are not uncommon in this city. Would believe that I sparred with a woman at the gym, but it was only after running into her on a run that we’d worked closely though never met not once but twice in the past?”
Was that a blatant aversion of Josh’s question about Tarin’s name? Yup. But strange coincidences did seem much more common here.
”Kevin was just telling me about the Mets. Said you guys watch together a lot.”
”Well, apparently for baseball they play every day,” Lee replied. ”So it is definitely a lot more often than I watch hockey.
“Are you still good for Chinese food tonight, Josh? I should get that ordered.” Waiting for his answer, Lee turned and made her way into the kitchen to call. And think. Because the Tarin topic had not been brought up the way she’d planned on it.
