The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The hatchets were back into thier holsters and Carrick’s heat was racing faster than he could keep up. His pupils dilated and his fist clenched tight as he used the roofs for cover as he flew overhead. There was gunfire and Carrick couldn’t see what everyone was shooting at but it was clear enough to Carrick that he wasn’t the target or at least the spot lights weren’t fixed on the sky for him. Meaning they forgot about him already or they are too busy with someone or something else. ”I’m getting a bonus...” Carrick said as he flew overhead doing the best he can to find Slim.
”No luck…” Carrick said to himself as he landed on one of the buildings and looked over the ledge. A second passed and a door behind him was kicked open and two men in black with guns pulled and searching for a target appeared from the roof access door. ”Coddle!” Carrrick said as he ducked into the shadow of the ledge and tried to crawl out of sight before he was spotted.
“There’s the wing b@@@@@!” one of them yelled pointing his gun in Carrick’s direction. Carrick was sure the gun was pointed at him because a beam of light was focused on him. Looking down to his chest Carrick reazlied not only did one of those guns have a flashlight mounted on it but a laser sight as well. The red dot was right over his heart and he exhaled. This was it. This was the thing that got him killed. Carrick’s face was blank as his eyes shut tight and his hands flung up, ”no…no…not like this.” “We got one of them!” someone yelled.
The roar didn’t faze him the swat in the air didn’t either. Carrick’s body moved up the tree and only showed hesitation when the cat before him seemed to bulk up. ‘….Fight!’ thought the beast as he pushed his fears on another alpha away. He was in charge here and that was his kill he was protecting or what was left of it. Carrick hopped up a branch then another till he was in a closer proximity to the beast. Another roar and Carrick leaped for the beast with one of his talon like hands attempting to swipe the beast.
The leap forced him into the air and abandon his spot on the tree. However after taking a swipe at the other beast it created the distance Carrick wanted where he could safely glide down to the ground even with his injured wing. Once he landed Carrick turned and looked back to where the predator was in the tree standing on his hind legs and making his uninjured wing open to make him self seem bigger and more dangerous. Breathing in deep he puffed out his furred chest and let loose another mighty roar. This was his nest/den and he fully intended to keep it.
A second passed and Carrick noticed another scent on the air besides the predator the fresh kill and the markings on the tree he had produced earlier. This one caused Carrick to be distracted for a few moments while he shifted his gaze over to the other mammal who appeared recently. Sniffing the air he ran through his options of the new possible threat, ‘Fight? Flight? ….Mate?’
The shopping district one of Carrick’s favorite places. Not because of the stores littered with the most useless and next best thing items nor the atmosphere. Carrick came to the shopping district to escape boredom by his two favorite past times. Street performing and when no one was looking pocket picking.
Did he need to do either? No, Carrick loved the attention from the street performing, dancing, card tricks you name it. If it gets the crowd going and focused on him he was more than happy to do it. Whether it was because of his time in the circus or the fact that he was the youngest child of his family back home Carrick didn’t know or care he just liked the attention. As for pick pocketing it presented a challenge and what master didn’t like to work in his craft. Money was no longer a factor that played into it though thanks to Shade and the large sum he received for robbing those mercenaries’ blind.
Deck of cards in his pocket the winged mutant walked along in the shopping district whistling a tune while his tail swayed behind him as he tried to decide what would be more fun. Spotting a man in a tailored suit with a very expensive Rolex, ”What to do what to do?” Carrick thought aloud as he changed directions behind the man and started to follow him around the shopping district.
The man walked into all the right stores and currently had his hands full with a few bags no doubt for the trophy wife. ”Too easy? Worth it?” Carrick said to himself as he picked up the pace and with a quick sleight Carrick reached into the mans pocket and lifted the wallet without much effort and slid the wallet into his pocket before turning in the opposite direction and walking off with a new largely packed wallet.
”Right…” Carrick said letting his hand fall to his side when she let it go, ”Last thing we need is to get our arses covered in ice.” Carrick added nodding his head. Even though if he’d never admit it her letting his hand go didn’t thrill him. Her hand was warm and he had gotten used to the butterflies… Carrick shook his head and was brought back to reality as people skated forward around them. Carrick blinked once and in a flash his mismatched colored eyes were staring at a blonde blur as she sped up and passed him followed by a move he had seen Sam do several times.
One thing that Carrick was good at was showing off to get attention and Liz was the one asking him to show her what he capable of. Carrick smirked glad that Sam was good at skating, good enough to teach the Irish thief a trick or two. ”You sure about that? Don’t want to embarrass you.” Carrick said bowing slightly then throwing his hands into the air as he waved them forward with each slide on the skate to build up more speed.
Turning with the rink and speeding Carrick passed Liz and weaved in between another what he assumed was a couple reaching out trying to hold hands. With a grin on his face Carrick jumped between them landed on one skate and continued forward yelling back, ”Sorry!” before he turned on one skate forcing him into a small spin. His wings and tail stuck out a bit during the twirl creating a small golden brown arc where his wings and tuft of his tail passed.
When he stopped he looked back to Liz stopped skating and grinned waiting for her to catch up. ”Think you can top that go ahead and try. I get extra points for maneuvering the couple.” Carrick said with a smirk.
The growl continued to emanate from Carrick’s mouth from behind his fangs recently covered in the blood of a fresh kill, while his eyes darted from tree to bush and back again. Smelling the air didn’t help much either the scent of another beast in the area was clear but where. Carrick’s beast like head jerked to the side smelling the air almost tasting the scent it was near but where. Carrick’s beast like body crouched lower and he let out a fierce roar one to ward away anyone that he couldn’t see. Similar to a lions roar it had a similar affect to most of the animal kingdom as well, at least all the normal animals from the kingdom.
A few blurs of white passed Carrick’s vision and it forced him to look up towards the tree branches. A few black birds flew off leaving their droppings behind causing Carrick’s attention to remain focused in the trees. Carrick growled again waiting for someone to show themselves a challenge to whoever was hiding from him, ‘come out or leave now before I come looking for you’ simple enough thought the beast as he sniffed the air again but this time kept his attention up. Turning his body to face the tree he had his back to for some time Carrick spotted the ‘would be’ predator.
With a injured wing the beast didn’t want to take to the air even if it was in the trees but when it came to being the alpha and owning your territory it was hard not to face a challenge so close to you. Opening his uninjured wing Carrick let out a howl and flapped once while jumping up and started to quickly climb the tree. If it was a fight the intruder wanted it was one Carrick was going to give it.
Slowly Carrick tied his shoelaces once his shoe was back on. Sock wrapped around his arm Carrick felt some what proud of himself he didn’t cry, yet and it seemed that things were going perfectly all he had to do was wait for Shade to reappear with his money. ‘Half right?’ thought Carrick who was jumping up and down not really fully processing everything that had transpired this night. He was shot at, shot, and was most likely an accessory to some kind of theft. It wasn’t like he killed anyone so it wasn’t murder right?
It took Carrick a few minutes to catch his breath during the time he heard a few gunshots still going off while the area he was at a few minutes before had the spotlights whizzing all over like it was trying to draw people in. Off in the distance the sound of sirens could be heard. ”Eejit better hurry back here or the popo’s gonna get a look at him.” Carrick knew from stories his da told him and all the movies if the police get a look at your face you best leave town.
”Better bring my money though…” Carrick said as he reached up to the tube sock wrapped around his arm and rubbed it slightly before a wince followed. ”Shade?” Carrick asked turning towards the rook hoping the mutant would step out of the shadows with two bags with the money sign on it.
Another second passed and Carrick was in the air again heading back towards where he just ran from where the sky reminded him of those old Vietnam movies where the skies were lit up with planes being shot down. ”Shady @#$!%^$ is gonna get me killed!” he said to himself now wanting to at least try and protect his investment.
In between licks of his chomps Carrick’s beast form sniffed the air to make sure there were no predators near by not like the beast had anything to worry about but seeing as he was having a tough time moving one of his wings he was in no hurry to get into a fight that might cost him a meal. Much to his pleasure there didn’t seem to be much around or if there was he couldn’t smell or hear them. He couldn’t smell them because his nose was buried into a carcass more than half the time he was ‘keeping and eye out’ and he couldn’t exactly hear anything approaching because a breeze of wind was wrestling the leaves and branches towards the tops of the trees.
Smacking his lips together a few times Carrick pulled his head from his meal and looked up to see some of the branches moving in hopes he’d find another small meal like a squirrel or a chipmunk. Sadly however, luck wasn’t on his side because he didn’t see anything of interest not yet anyway. Nothing for the time being was more interesting than his meal. So without much thought Carrick buried his face back into the rabbit biting and tearing as each second passed by. His elongated canines and sharpened teeth only made tearing the flesh from the bones that much quicker.
After getting to near the last bit of meat left on the rabbit Carrick’s nostrils flared due to a change in the wind or the sudden decrease of blood and meat on the meal before him Carrick’s mood changed from content to on edge. Cat like eyes shifted from bush to tree watching and waiting. Slowly Carrick got up from his makeshift shelter and stepped towards the clearing that was in front of his shelter. There wasn’t any sign of movement nothing that he could see or hear but that didn’t mean that there wasn’t someone or something around.
Carrick’s beast form was very territorial and anyone getting to close to where he set up shot wasn’t okay in his book especially since he had a somewhat fresh kill in his den. A low growl exited his throat a warning to all would be intruders that this was his turf and he would defend it seeing as running wasn’t exactly an option due to his wing being injured. Carrick back his way up to a tree and crouched low continuing to growl while his eyes shifted from location to location.
Carrick returned her grin with a smirk of his own before he shrugged, ”Happens to all of us I suppose.” snapping his fingers Carrick added, ”Been mistaken for Australian before by some Eejit in the park. When he told me to watch out for stingray’s and crocs and all that Steve Irwin stuff I waited till he wasn’t looking swooped down and grabbed his Frisbee and dropped it in the middle of a pond.”
Carrick laughed at his own story, ”Let me tell you, the ape wasn’t happy in the slightest. But that goes to show you never pick on an angel with a tail.” Carrick said nodding his head in a matter-of-factly manner as he picked up his mug and took smug sip.
After waiting for a second Carrick shrugged again and took a step back, ”Well, might as well be off. Got some angel stuff that needs to be done and all that.” Carrick said waving his hand putting an emphasis on ‘all that’. Another step back and Carrick waved to her, ”You get lost or need some company track me down I shouldn’t be too hard to find. Be more than happy to hang out with the ‘new girl’” Carrick made quotations with his one free hand before adding, ”Even if she has horns and is from England.” Carrick let out a quick laugh and was already down the hall glad she didn’t make it extremely awkward due to the fact that she saw him run into the mansion naked less than an hour before.
It had been three weeks since the winged shifter had last seen Tommy “Green” Thimble and it had been in Carrick’s opinion far too long. Tommy was one of those older homeless people that just understood Carrick and had developed oddly enough some sort of friendship. Every now and then Carrick would give Tommy some money for food or some sort of drink (usually alcoholic) only because he wanted to.
When Carrick first sprouted his wings he was often looked at an outcast until he learned to embrace the mutant he was during this time there were only a select few people who didn’t judge him and most of them were performers, either on the streets or under the big top but ever since Carrick first joined the circus it seemed people who lived on the street thought of him more than a blessing than a burden. One of those people happened to be Tommy.
Carrick didn’t know much about Tommy only that the homeless guy stood up for Carrick a few times when a few other homeless people tried to nab some money he was making on the side either from hustling people with card games or pick pocketing either way they tried to get physical which never happened luckily for Carrick all because of Tommy stepping in and threatening to ‘go sick house on their a$$es’. A battle cry Carrick always found hilarious just one of the reasons Carrick was fond of the grizzled man.
After an hour of tracking Tommy down Carrick finally managed to spot what looked like him in an alleyway. Sure Tommy seemed to not always be there but Carrick had grown fond of Tommy and his personality quirks over time and it was now the reason he was looking for him. ”Ohi Tommy!” Carrick called out from the skies positive that he couldn’t be heard even though he was quickly descending towards Tommy.
The closer Carrick got however the more it seemed like Tommy was in trouble and when a friend of Carrick’s is in trouble usually that meant trouble for Carrick as well. Carrick picked up speed and there was a woman in front of him now wielding something… pink? An Axe?!?! Carrick’s heart leapt as he closed his wings and speed till he was close enough to snap open his wings and slow his body kicking up whatever grit and grime was in the alleyway. Flapping once Carrick tried to get the woman’s attention. ”The Hell you think your doing to Tommy!” Carrick roared as loudly as he could making sure to get the attention of anyone passing by.
There was movement in the bushes a subtle rustle but enough to alert the keen ears on the head of the beast. A tail flicked excitedly as the beast lifted his nose into the air smelling rabbit. He couldn’t see it yet but it wouldn’t take much to track it down. Four paws were pressed into the ground making prints in the snow that no one would understand if they came across it, it would look almost human like but the way they were twisted and warped anyone who would come across them would just see animal prints the claws attached to the back and front paws didn’t help much either.
The beast slowly padded forward smelling the air with every step he was hungry and there was prey nearby. When was the last time he had eaten one day maybe two? The beast didn’t really care when the last meal was all he cared about was when the next one was going to be. In truth it had only been a few hours since his last meal but as far as the beast was concerned he was famished for he had no recollection of the last meal that happened earlier that day.
---- Four hours earlier ----
Carrick had actually managed a big breakfast; three eggs and five strips of bacon followed by some toast with butter. Normally Carrick didn’t eat that much but for some reason his hunger grew with each bite. After he finished his meal though he decided to go for a fly like everyday after breakfast however instead of flying around the grounds he only managed to make it over the denser part of the woods behind the mansion before he noticed a baseball flying straight at him. Without much of a warning he couldn’t dodge the ball fully and sacrificed his right wing instead of his face and down he went.
Branch after branch hit his wings, arms legs and head till he landed on the ground whimpering from the pain. It lasted only a second the initial pain at least till his body started to go numb his mind blank. Carrick started to shift but unlike his normal shifts when he shifted into his better half the Gryphon he seemed to be caught in between his human form and his mythical one.
It wasn’t the first time he was caught between forms but this was the first time he was alone for it. No one was around so no one had any idea what was happening including Carrick all he knew was he was in pain and feeling a shift come on and he wasn’t in control like usual.
Unlike his normal shifts however this one was more intense his pupils thinned out and became slits his fingers contracted into a fist before opening up to make way for the claws his fingers were quickly becoming. Skin rippled and bubbled to make way for a layer of brown fur. Carrick’s clothes ripped and he snarled a cat like snarl before looking up into the sky to see the sun mostly hidden from the dense trees. Carrick roared and the shift was complete and the beast was in control.
---- Now ----
The beast padded happily back towards its makeshift dwelling it had created in a short amount of time. Sticks leaned up on a pair or trees clothes together making a small shelter large enough for the beast to dwell with its freshly caught meal. Once inside Carrick’s beast form started to rip apart the rabbit allowing the hunger to subside.
Carrick was about to take another sip but stopped short when Serena said she was looking forward to classes, really? Another one? ”Well, they best way to not feel trapped is to escape once in a while, why I go flying.” Carrick finally took a sip of his water and added, ”I usually feel the exact opposite when it comes to lessons and all that jazz.” which was why Carrick often used his class time to escape by not showing up to said classes. One of the reasons he was doing poorly in most classes, not all of them because a select few had a person of interest, which kept him coming, and somewhat motivated to do well.
Carrick nodded his head again and lifted his hand to his forehead to make horns once again, ”Right, I get it your scary.” he lowered his horns and shrugged, ”I get it you don’t want to talk about it. Just keep in mind it could be worse.” Carrick said sipping his water again finishing the mug in the process. Turning and heading to the sink Carrick added, ”There are always a few of us that don’t like what we can do. Just don’t let it make you too scared to fit in here right?” Carrick refilled the mug and walked to the microwave again and turned it on.
A few seconds later the microwave beeped and he removed the mug and instead of sipping it right away he blew on it and set it down less he’d burn his tongue again. ”Condolences about being from England.” Carrick said with a smirk showing his elongated canines in a playful manner. ”What?” Carrick scoffed before adding allowing his think Irish accent out, ”Can’t tell where I’m from? You and me same side of the pond.” Carrick said before looking to his cup waiting for less steam to come out of it. ”Ireland.” Carrick said trying not to think about what he’d be doing back home.
”Condolences about the starting school next week, if you want I can tell you which professors you don’t want to sit in the back of the room for because they like to pick on them.” Carrick said smiling and remembering the English teacher who loved on signaling Carrick out when he was busy trying to sleep. Wasn’t like he showed up every day to that class you’d assume one would be rewarded and not called on. Turning to his sandwich Carrick took another bite and continued to talk, ”But welcome to the school, great place to live usually I’m rarely bored here.”
When she described her power she seemed almost reluctant to discuss it and left it as a very vague answer, ”Figured you had horns, don’t know why all girls hate horns. You never look bad with them.” Carrick said nodding his head taking another bite of his sandwich. A few seconds passed and Carrick silently finished his sandwich in a few big bites followed by washing it down with his heated water. The cold feeling that had embraced him minutes before was starting to fade. His body started to warm up and now that he had a full stomach he was feeling energized as well.
Energized as he was he was even more curious now about Serena’s true abilities he said it was horns only because she didn’t feel like discussing it. Carrick oddly enough understood how she felt when he first sprouted his wings life was difficult and it was hard to make friends, that was until his personality started to adapt to all the attention he had been receiving. ”Where you from?” he asked taking another sip of his water and stared at the woman with his mismatched colored eyes while his tail was swaying back and forth.
Carrick pointed at himself again when she asked him his name, ”Carrick.” Carrick pointed at Serena, ”Serena,” he pointed back at himself and smiled, ”Carrick.” the microwave dinged and Carrick removed his heated sandwich before taking a bite of it then speaking with his mouth still full ”M’eard he did doo.” Almost on cue his wings shifted behind his back letting Serena know that they were there.
Chewing his bite finally Carrick swallowed and then pointed towards his golden brown wings, ”Not a ton of us in here with fully functional wings, one guy a regular shaper, struts around like his all that,” Carrick said imitating a strut while he stuck out his wings slightly and puffed out his chest, ”But the kicker is, bloke can’t fly with his wings cause they are attached under his arms like this.” Carrick waved his free hand under his arm where the wings were. Carrick took another bite of his sandwich then added, ”Poor Bastard can’t even fly with ‘em more of a short glide or a running leap.” Carrick said again through a slightly full mouth. ”Looks like a giant chicken really.”
Carrick’s tail started to sway back and forth a bit more when he moved further from Serena and closer to the fridge, ”Beaky ain’t too bad though.” Carrick said while opening the fridge his body all but disappearing from view except his tail, which twitched when he spotted the barbecue sauce. Taking a ste back and another mouthful of a sandwich Carrick chewed while he added some sauce to his sandwich. Finishing his bite Carrick looked back to Serena, ”When did you move in?”
Carrick placed the sauce back in the fridge and he continued towards the hot water he heated up seconds before. ”Top favorite wings in the school,” Carrick thumbed back towards his own that opened a bit while he leaned on the counter, ”Though I might be the slightest biased and all.” Carrick chewed and swalloed another bite and took a sip of his water, ”Still too hot..” setting the mug down Carrick shifted his gaze towards the woman, ”About you though? Got anything like these?” Carrick said shifting his wings out a bit more before they closed, ”Let me guess you have horns don’t you? Carrick asked curiously lifting his hands and placing a makeshift pair of horns (thumb and pinky) on his head.
Almost on cue when she grabbed onto his hand to keep the distance between the two short, the butterflies in Carrick’s stomach started to flap their wings causing the winged shifter to feel light on his feet. Well, lighter than usual. Blood rushing to his face Carrick shifted his weight to slow himself so Liz could pass him a little, ”not in a rush to go anywhere.” Carrick said his eye shifting down to their hands that were currently latched onto each other. ‘Unexpected turn of events.’ Thought Carrick mentally kicking himself that he did what Sam told him to do. ‘Christ, the ape was right’ thought Carrick more as he came to the realization that all Sam had to say wasn’t completely useless.
With the blood in his face Carrick continued to look forward till he was sure the red dissipated somewhat, the last thing he wanted was to Liz freak out because his face was a little red. If and when Carrick was sick Liz could worry until that time he preferred if his face wasn’t as red as a strawberry when ever he was near her or holding here hand. ”Doing pretty damn well for someone who hasn’t done this sort of thing in a while.” Carrick picked up the pace briefly for a moment before turning his body around so he was skating backwards.
‘out then in’ thought Carrick as he looked down at his skates that were weaving in then out just the way Sam had taught him. Mismatched color eyes rose up from the ice and the shifters skates to the woman before him now. Smiling and lifting his other hand up so she could take it if she wanted Carrick asked, ”Can hold my other hand if you like, you know… just till you get your skates broken in… If you want…” Carrick said shrugging still thinking about ‘in and out’ so he didn’t slip or fall backwards dragging him and Liz to the hard ice.
”I hear it is damn near impossible to catch him.” Carrick said waiting on the warm water to finish in the microwave. Turning towards the fridge and opening it Carrick grabbed some lunchmeat and then brought it over towards the bread and started to make a ham sandwich, ”It’s the weirdest thing too, everyone claims to have seen him but somehow he always escapes without a proper scolding or even a detention.” lied Carrick as his teeth continued to chatter in between words only the frequency went down the longer he was in the kitchen.
”I see someone cleaned up after him as well.” Carrick said looking up from his lunchmeat and bread to see a bunch of feathers in the trash bin. ”Not very good on the upkeep either. Just letting all those wings on the floor.” Carrick looked from the bin to the woman, ”What’s yer name? I’ll be sure that the ‘streaker’ gives you a proper thanks for helping him escape without a trace.” Carrick smiled and flashed his elongated canines in the process before running over to the microwave when it started to beep.
Pulling the mug out and taking a sip Carrick’s body shivered as the hot water burned his tongue, ”Hot.” was all he could muster before returning towards his sandwich, which had far too much ham on it and not enough bread. Carrick returned to the microwave and started to heat up the snack before cleaning up his mess. ”Never seen you before round these parts, meaning you must be new here. Carrick.” Carrick said pointing to himself when he said his name.
