The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Carrick smirked and ceased moving, ”You make that sound as if it’s a bad thing, boyo!” Carrick said snapping open his wings so all who were near the debating pair could see in his opinion one of the greatest gifts in the world. ”You think anyone could stop me from roughing you up? All I’d have to do is pick you up fly twenty feet or so and drop you.” Carrick said laughing not that he would actually ever do that but what the kid doesn’t know won’t hurt him.
”Unless you got some wings to sprout out of yer’ arse, doubt you’d be able to do much about it.” Carrick said running his mouth unaware that the guy he picked pocketed before was now walking back in Carrick’s and Clyde’s direction looking for his wallet.
Carrick flapped his wings once and was in the air not realizing that the wallet he had picked when Clyde found him fell out of his pocket. ”Like I said, not much people can do about catching me.” Carrick said landing a second later next to the wallet that was now being searched for. Snapping his wings behind his back Carrick strutted over in front of Clyde and pointed a finger in his direction, ”Don’t think you ‘ave any right trying to tell me what’s right and what’s wrong.”
Carrick paused for dramatic effect and then wagged the finger again, ”And another thing, I…” Carrick was cut off as another deeper voice interjected, “Who took the money from my wallet!?!” Carrick stopped short and turned his head, ”Saw the kid do it!” it was always a reaction to find an excuse or scapegoat whenever someone near him was yelling about something even if it really wasn’t him that caused the something to happen.
Carrick smirked when Clyde tossed back the wallet, it seemed the kid didn’t sound as stupid as he initially led on with his preachy false wisdom ideal for a kid his age. Carrick caught the wallet and shrugged, ”Well If yer’ not gonna return it and you know about me lifting it that makes you an accomplice of sorts don’t it?” Carrick said looking around for the nearest garbage can to stash the wallet. No need being caught with someone else’s information if someone did suddenly recognize him, someone like Jorge. That would have been a big problem for Carrick. Especially seeing as Jorge knew how to get in contact with his folks and all his staff. Then he’d probably have to talk to Ms. T Carrick mentally cringed at the thought.
”So, what now Clyde?” Carrick asked looking entertained while raising both eyebrows and grinning. Putting the wallet in his pocket for the moment Carrick shifted his weight back. With Clyde’s perspective Carrick wouldn’t have been surprised if the kid suggested he turn himself in for theft. The thought almost made Carrick laugh.
”Well, if your not going to take the heat for this and I’m certainly not taking the heat for this then I guess we both pretend this didn’t happen.” Carrick took a step away from the kid and laughed, ”Maybe when you’re my age you can make folks like me see things differently but unless you don’t plan on actually getting involved best to shut yer’ trap aye?” Carrick said making it more a statement than anything else. ”Just be lucky I’m not actually ‘one of the bad mutants’ you were going on about. If I was wouldn’t hesitate to rough you up a bit.” it wasn’t a threat because Carrick didn’t have it in him to rough up anyone smaller than him seeing as he was a runt his whole life and knew what it was like to be the runt.
”That was a warning.” Carrick explained, ”lot less nicer folks out there than me.” Carrick said shrugging again and taking another step back slightly waiting for the kids response.
It was time for the awkward ‘You just witnessed me kill some people’ goodbyes and while Carrick was never one to be awkward (unless girls he liked were involved) this one was quite so. Carrick found it hard to look onto the shadow mutant once he gave his first answer. Anger was something the winged was not, not normally anyways every now and then he had an off day but flying usually fixed that. Now? Carrick wasn’t sure if he’d ever really be the same again.
One hand reached for one of the bags and Carrick noticed it was still shaking a bit. Shaking it and the other a few times Carrick took a deep breath and grabbed onto one of the bags lifted it to see how heavy it was. Not terribly heavy but enough where he had to be careful with or else he’d drop it and then there would be a large sum of cash raining down for anyone to grab it and that was something he could do without.
”Right, off with ya then.” Carrick said shifting his gaze from the bags of money to Shady, ”Not sure if I’d be up for another round slim.” Carrick said shrugging, ”This one…” Carrick stood up straight and shrugged his shoulders and opening his wings, ”Barely escaped this time….” he said quietly but loud enough for Shade to hear. ”…. Thanks…” was all he could say.
Reaching down again Carrick grabbed two sacks in his right and one in his left hand. Slowly he stood up straight getting used to the additional weight before his wings flapped once then twice and by the third time he was already an inch off the ground and by the forth one he was already heading for the ledge of the building.
Taking one last look at Shade and nodding his head slightly Carrick lifted himself higher and higher and away from the killer and the killed. Wishing he could undo this night Carrick flew back to the mansion as fast as he could hoping his roommate wouldn’t be there when he arrived for two reasons, one because of the insane amount of money he had and the fact that he felt like he was going to be sick again.
Liz’s face didn’t say much at first but her actions spoke loud enough for even Carrick’s inexperienced self to take notice. Her hand tightened and his mimicked shortly after, Carrick got the message. Awkward and inexperienced he might have been in this situation but he had enough sense to hold on to something when it was holding back. Carrick shifted his eyes forward no longer in need to see Liz’s reaction. This caused Carrick to smile like he just hit the mega millions.
”Hot chocolate and marshmallows? Yeah, think that is doable.” Carrick said nodding his head thinking the same sounded good enough for him, though maybe a hotdog or a pretzel… his stomach growled again this time absent butterflies. As quickly as hi s appetite was gone it had returned.
The line moved up two more people before Carrick shifted his head to match Liz’s gaze it was a quick glance from his point of view but when he looked he found it hard to look away. ”Isn’t it? Been meaning to ask you out for ages, when I found out you liked to skate figured it was perfect for a date…” Carrick said without thinking until the words spewed from his mouth. Carrick blinked once and then fumbled with the words running through his head all of which were some variation of, ‘Carrick ya Eejit shut up!’ or ‘Gather yer’ wits and stop spewing from the mouth!’.
”Errr….” Carrick’s face lit up this time bright red and then Carrick shifted his head forward towards the stand where there was still one person in line before them. Silently he cursed himself and the guy running the stand, he for being an idiot in front of Liz and the guy running the stand for not moving fast enough.
The flight back Carrick’s wandering mind was racing, mainly the thoughts that were the loudest and most re-occurring were, ‘They’re dead!’ and ‘I almost died!’ still with his mind racing he found himself at the rally point where shady was waiting for him with his cut of the money. Carrick landed next to the bags of money and stared at them wondering if it was the equivalent to the human lives that were spent in obtaining these. Carrick looked up to Shade and nodded his head with the advice about depositing the money. He already had worked out how he was going to deposit it in small amounts before he had the money so he wasn’t too worried about that.
”How many?” Carrick asked the shady mutant without thinking about it. Carrick’s skin was still slightly pale and his stomach was all twisted in knots. ”…. I’m not sure I want to know…” Carrick said shortly after. Shaking his head slightly he closed his eyes for a second then opened them wondering if his Da ever went through something like this. Maybe he could ask him? Carrick pushed that thought out of his mind for now though and then looked back to Shade.
”Does this feeling ever go away?” Carrick asked almost pleading with his tone to the shadow mutant to answer. Carrick didn’t like feeling like this sick to his stomach, he almost died and in turn witnessed the lives of two others snuffed out with nothing more than a few gunshots and a flick of Shade’s wrist. ”I don’t like this feeling…” he said to himself but it was loud enough for Shade to hear.
Blinking and tilting his head sideways Carrick couldn’t help but smile at the kid who pointed to the nearest charity stand. ‘Not a bad idea’ thought Carrick to himself feeling he should actually try to make up for a few marks he had in the past that got just a bit to bloody. He never made the blood spill but he was an accomplice to the one that did the spilling so in his book he was just as guilty if not less so. However, Carrick being Carrick frowned at the boy and shook his head. ”Hey, Robin needed some money too, had to buy those matching uniforms for his merry men didn’t’ he?” Carrick said never wanting to have a group of friends he’d call his ‘merry men’ nothing manly about that was there?
Carrick smirked more and straightened his head upright when the kid admitted he was one in a hush tone like he was ashamed of it. Carrick understood some other people weren’t happy being mutants but to Carrick there was no other way. ”So what yer sayin’ is I’m being held accountable for the entire mutant race? Bit extreme if you ask me.” Carrick said raising his hand and placing it under his chin, ”So by that logic, a mutant kills someone I too killed them?” Carrick said shooting his hand up from his chin and covered his mouth, ”I’m a murderer then?” Carrick mocked a gasp and pointed at the kid, ”Ohmygod. You are too then!”
Carrick waited a second to let his counter to his logic set in, ”Way I see it someone doesn’t speak for an entire race of people or mutants. We ‘ave eejits they have eejits, are we all eejits? No some? Yes.” Carrick said shrugging his shoulders lowering his hands into his pockets where one of the wallets he just lifted resided absent the bills in it.
”Sides, you really think you can put the wallet back before he finds out? Couldn’t even pull one over on me…” Carrick paused and laughed then added, ”Then again I’m good at what I do.” pulling the wallet out of his pocket without the bills Carrick tossed it to the kid, ”Tell ya what…. Kid.” he never got a name, ”You can put the wallet into the guys back pocket where it was before without him finding out I’ll quit stealing.” not that he needed to keep doing it now that he was sitting on a rather large sum back at the mansion. ”Name’s Gryph.” lied Carrick giving out one of his nicknames figuring it was best. ”Whatcha say boyo? Up fer it?”
It seemed that not all the money would be wasted on something stupid like a ridiculously large amount of birdseed and energy drinks, or a potato cannon, or a huge T.V. that neither he nor his roommate would ever use. Carrick actually preferred to spend the money this way than those. She gave him the salute and then he shifted his weight like he was taught too when trying to change directions. They skated together hands intertwined (something that Carrick still wasn’t registering otherwise his face would have lit up like fireworks on the 4th of July).
Once they reached the edge of the ice Carrick awkwardly stepped once then twice before he was able to keep posture up. Rubber padding covered the ground so the skates wouldn’t have been ruined on the way to the food shop something he recalled to look out for when actually walking on his ice skates. Awkwardly he bent his knees more than usual and shifted his weight every time the skates tried to buckle one way or another. Once or twice he accidentally pulled Liz towards him slightly with the hand that was still latched onto hers.
Loudly his stomach growled as they approached the short line to the stand, ”’aven’t eaten anythin’ since lunch.” Carrick said patting his stomach with his free hand only to realize by this motion that his other hand was hanging on to hers. He looked down at it for a second and his face started to turn read again, thoughts started to race through his mind and the butterflies started to act up. Suddenly he wasn’t as hungry as he was before.
”So… ummm…. We’re still holdin hands…” Carrick said making an obvious observation. He wasn’t complaining but his tone made it sound like he was sure of himself. ”Errr… I can let go if you want…” Carrick said offering and loosening his grip in the few seconds he offered. ”Sorry.” he said looking down then up to the menu on a large white board behind the counter glancing at Liz from the corner of his eyes.
By the third time his body tried to expel anything else from his body it just turned into a dry heave one that allowed Carrick to at least catch his breath once it was emptied. He breathed in and noticed Shade talking but didn’t hear much other than the words, ‘You are alive’ that made him feel slightly better the conformation of what he already knew. He was alive and they were both dead… this was a concept he was aware of but never anything he had to experience first hand. The last time someone died that he knew was his grandmother, who died of old age or something like that. He was young and didn’t think much of it at the time but now.
"Look, I'm...What the hell did you think was going to happen!?"
Carrick’s eyes flashed up to Shade and his look turned to one of a blank dismal expression he didn’t know what to say. He thought that it was a game? That it was going to be fun and easy. He said nothing but wiped his mouth looked at the vomit on the floor then back up to Shade who had blood on his hands. ”… Can we go now?” Carrick asked sounding more like a child than he ever did before in Shade’s company.
Carrick waited for a second then pushed himself up and then pointed back to the direction where the rally point was supposed to be, ”I’ll meet you back there…” Carrick said looking away from the rally point back to the pile of blood next to both bodies. Carrick stared at them for a second wondering if any of them had kids.
Instantly he thought of his Da and snapped open his wings determined not to let Shade see him act like this. Carrick decided to take the long way to the rally point by back tracking around another building before heading back to the spot Shade was supposed to meet him before all of this mess went south.
The kid was funny to Carrick, the way he acted all self-righteous reminded him a bit of Koga on a bad day. Koga on a good day would have just taken the wallet back and made Carrick apologize. Koga did always have the muscle behind him when it came to tussling. This kid however… Carrick let go of his hand when the kid jerked it back and smiled to the little guy who was trying to be tough.
”Tough as mouse ya’are?” Carrick said lifting the hand he had around the kid’s wrist up innocently so the kid could see both hands. ”Look ‘hose calling the kettle black, you try lifting from me ‘cause you saw me lifting from that Eejit? Just trying to find some balance is all.” Carrick’s mismatched eyes locked on the kids face, ”an yer’ starting to try and throw that balance out of sync.”
Carrick waited for a second as an adult who was staring down the two passed by before he continued, ”Who says yer a witness?” Carrick asked flashing his elongated canines in his smile in a somewhat display of mischief. ”Second off that is rule number ‘tree rule number two is make sure you can out’run ‘em if you get caught.” Carrick smirked and opened his wings slightly, ”You, boyo defiantly can’t outrun me unless you got some jets stashed somewhere on yer person.”
Carrick leaned down slightly so he was a little closer to the kid (something Carrick wasn’t used to seeing as he was often the shortest in sight) ”You a mutant or something? You said people like ‘me’. How am I making you look bad?” Carrick asked not really one to let that go unnoticed. Book smarts he never really had but when it came to conversations and street smarts he usually put two and two together.
Carrick’s beast like eyes still fixed on the woman he hardly noticed the predator jump out of the tree till she was in mid flight. The woman backed away into a tree and Carrick determined that she wasn’t a threat. Shifting focus back onto the other beast Carrick couldn’t help but still slightly focused on the woman something about her and her scent. Carrick roared and used all fours to push up into the air to give him some height.
Front talons out he took another swipe at the beast in midair using his good wing to shift him about in hopes to avoid the beast’s claws but like every alpha knows scars mean respect from other alphas and if he got a scar out of this then it was meant to be. Bearing his fangs Carrick snarled again and after he swiped at her in mid air he turned and glided down towards the tree trunk where the blonde was now backed.
Upon landing Carrick turned on his feet facing away from the tree trunk and towards the beast where he stood on his hind paws and snapped open his good wing letting out another roar letting the other beast know that the blonde was now his as well.
With his eyes shut the moments leading up to the sound of the gunfire felt like an eternity. He was paralyzed and couldn’t move, he couldn’t even open his eyes as if that was going to make everything better. He felt like a child behind bars in a crib he wanted to get away but couldn’t as if his body was weighted down by a thousand pounds. A few images flashed through his mind, his parents the first time he flew and then the last one before he heard the bangs was a blonde haired girl before it became the image of him staring down the barrel of the gun on the receiving end. Carrick’s heart rate went through the roof when he opened them again after the three shots fired.
Was he dead? Carrick opened his eyes and everything despite it being dark was brighter than usual, was this adrenaline or was he dead. Carrick’s hand shot to his chest and he quickly looked for blood but found nothing, before he could look up to his wings with the same panicked expression on his face Carrick heard Shade’s voice where the gunman stood seconds before. ”Wha…. What happened!?!?” Carrick said through panicked gasps.
Mismatched colored eyes shifted from one of the bodies to the other, both were bleeding and motionless standing around Shade. Shade… saved his life? Carrick blinked once and then shook his head, ”No, pretty fa’ from al’right!” Carrick said his accent coming out heavier than usual given to the circumstances. ”The bloody ‘ell is wrong with ya!?!” Carrick said jumping to his fet and putting his hands all over his body to make sure he wasn’t shot. Another second passed and Carrick realized that both the gunmen weren’t getting up. ”You.. are they… dead?” Carrick asked his eyes and voice still full of panic.
With his heart racing thirty miles a minute Carrick took two steps closer to Shade before he looked down at the bodies and all the blood, there was so much blood. Carrick took a step back and stumbled and fell back. Feeling his stomach lurch Carrick turned his head to the side and threw up. Shade said there was gunman Carrick never registered anything like this. Murder? His heart started to race again while his stomach emptied itself again.
It seemed to work better than he could have expected, even though the winged thief didn’t stick the landing he still got a better response from Liz and the few people still watching than he could have hoped for. Still not as great as if he could have landed it but no use crying over it. Liz’s laugh was enough to make the bruising and the slight ego crash worth it. Shifting his mismatched eyes from the few people back to Liz he nodded his head and slowed down and turned still holding onto her hand he didn’t want to let it go and if she wasn’t complaining he wouldn’t press the issue.
”It was a sparrow with a little red on his chest.” Carrick nodded again letting out a small laugh of his own while pointing to his own chest where the red on the sparrow would have been. ”While you were busy pulling off backward figure eights, mighty impressive!” Carrick said squeezing her hand slightly without out realizing it.
”We make quite the show on the ice, you and me.” Carrick said before he went silent while their skates sliced through the ice, ”Nah, we don’t. I’m not entirely sure me arse could handle another check into the wall.” Carrick said willing his tail to move about behind him making sure everything was still fine, sore but it was.
While they were passing the exit off of the ice Carrick spotted the snack bar a little ways from the ice surrounded by other skaters who were sipping hot chocolate and eating popcorn and pretzels. Using the hand that was holding onto hers Carrick lifted his hand up and used his index finger to point to tiny building ”You work up a bit of an appetite yet? Could go for some hot chocolate meself, one of the professors told me this place makes it great.” Carrick said turning his head to see her reaction, ”My treat?” Carrick asked hoping he could spend some of the money he had made with Shady.
The ice broke his fall then the wall. Carrick was looking up at the sky for a second as a distinctive cloud passed over head. The sound of a few ‘ouch’s could be heard over the sound of someone skating near him. Looking back at the ice upside down he spotted Liz coming to his rescue. The act of her rushing towards him made the butterflies in his stomach start flapping again something that he was tired of trying to ignore because they didn’t go away when he wanted them to. Carrick looked back to the sky as Liz kicked up a few ice chips in the air which caused a few to land on his face and melt. The feeling was quite refreshing as the ice melted but left water droplets on his face.
”Heh, not really… my tail broke me fall, then the wall.” Carrick said his face warming up a bit when she placed her hand on his shoulder. Looking from her shoulder to her eyes Carrick could see the concern that her voice vocalized. Almost getting lost in her brown eyes which might have just become his new favorite color Carrick asked trying to distract himself less he’d do or say something stupid, ”Everyone still watching?” the winged mutant waited for a second and felt the aches and pains in his rear, tail and legs as he started to make sure he was all right.
Almost perfect his rear would be bruised for some time and he was sure he’d feel some pain in his tail but for the most part he felt okay enough for him to get up slowly due to him being on skates. Once he was standing Carrick looked from Liz then flashed a toothy grin and threw his hands up in the air and jumped on his skates pretending he just stuck an incredibly difficult landing, ”Ta da!” was all he said before flashing a wink in Liz’s direction.
Whether he got the few people still watching to laugh or clap he wasn’t a hundred percent sure because right after he faked the landing he grabbed Liz by the hand and turned to face her skating backwards ”Impressive landing right?” he asked still smiling. ”Might need to ice me arse once or twice more before we leave so if you see me sitting on the rink…” laughing again, ”When we tell this story I stuck the landing.” Carrick said in a mocking matter-of-fact tone.
With one of his hands in his pocket Carrick fumbled with the recently stolen wallet removing the bills from it counting them in his hand. Fifteen total a good number in his opinion unless they were all ones, which Carrick seriously doubted. Due to the watch the guy had on him and his dress attire there had to at least be fifties unless he was one of those fakes that Carrick to lift from. The fakes were the ones that bought clothes and accessories that were way out of their price range meaning the wallets had little to nothing in him. It was like stealing from the homeless and it never sat right with him.
A few seconds passed and Carrick shifted his eyes from person to person in front of him should he pick a new target or call it a day? Heck he could set up a table and hustle some people, card games were easy enough to fix especially when the deck was always stacked in his favor. ‘Call it a day or keep at it?’ Carrick thought pulling the deck of cards from his pocket and lifting off the top one, ”Red I go black I stay. An have some fun.” said Carrick to himself as he continued to walk forward pulling the top card off of the deck. ‘Black looks like I’m having fun here’ thought Carrick as he looked around for his next mark or at least somewhere where he can set up his card tricks while putting them back into his pocket.
Stopping and looking forward Carrick was forced to move forward as someone on the small size bumped into him. ”Ohi, ye Eejit watch where ya going!” his tail felt the hand first, the bristles on his tail alerted the winged mutants presence of someone trying to pilfer his wallet. Instantly Carrick’s free hand shot back and grabbed the kid’s wrist.
Turning he smiled to what he was seeing someone around a young age trying to pick his pocket. ”Wicked nice try, but you forgot to do a few things before trying to pillage me pocket.” Carrick said, ”First rule, check for a tail or make sure it won’t be a problem.” Carrick said his tail swaying behind him so the boy could see.
The mismatched color eyes of the thief followed Liz as she skated away from him once again readying her next feat, ”No, ain’t nothing wrong with trying.” Carrick said through a smile as he skated forward making sure his eyes didn’t leave Liz direction. She was beautiful, her hair flowed in the wind as she continued to skate around him she was quick and was building up speed enough to perform the feat she had planned. Going from one leg an 8 then cross-legged Carrick stopped gliding on the ice once he got close to Liz where he started a slow clap, ”Looked like you had wings for a second.” Carrick said giving her one of the best compliments he could think of.
A few other skaters who were near them and even some off the rink nodded their heads and clapped a few times in Liz’s direction. It seemed Carrick wasn’t the only one in awe from Liz. One or two of the people watching were guys who seemed to be around their ages. Shifting his gaze from the people watching them or rather her back to Liz, Carrick cleared his throat ”Not sure I can beat the landing nor the one leg but I’ll give it a shot.”
Carrick turned away from Liz and skated till he had enough distance between them, they had an audience now and Carrick’s bad habits were urging him to steal the show. Liz was good but could she compete with the amazing Gryphon? Carrick shook his head a few times and shook his hands, trying to remember what his Da said about showboating and how not to do it too often. The words fell on deaf ears then too and continue to do so.
His skates started to move as he lowered his body to pick up speed in Liz’s general direction. His eyes shifted to the crowd then back to Liz as adrenaline started to get his heart beating faster. Whether it was the crowd or Liz watching getting his heart to beat so fast Carrick didn’t know but it was on his mind enough for him not to think his maneuver through enough.
Skating next to Liz Carrick passed her jumped and snapped open his wings and flapped once then twisted backwards in the air doing a back flip. Coming down on the landing however didn’t go as well as he could hoped Carrick landed on his feet for a brief second before his legs swept out from under him. Falling backward Carrick landed on his rear pinning his tail between him and the ice while sliding into the wall of the ice rink.
