The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Hunter appreciated Iris moving the light, now he could see without having to squint. When he heard her question he gave his preconceived answer. “It emerged at about fifteen. Hiding it was easy, but it did mean that I had to avoid anything that would give me a serious injury.”
“So, does this one just give you vision in bright light or is there anything else?” The mutant whose power was in the gypsum was able to create bright light, blinding those around him. The onyx and gypsum gems contained the powers of two brothers who had opposing powers. Hunter had managed to convince Marius, the one with the power of light, to help him track down and defeat his brother, Grath. Marius’s light not only blinded his brother, but deprived him of shadows to teleport through.
After he had captured Grath Hunter then overpowered Marius and took both their powers and used them to make the onyx and gypsum gems. He’d never had time to test whether Paragon had any powers beyond their sight. Without knowing what she was meant to do he doubted that she’d be able to utilise their other powers, if she even could.
“I don’t know,” Hunter said, shrugging, “But if the limits have never been tested then we don’t know what you can do. Maybe we’ll see what you can do with some training sessions. For now though you can deactivate it and we can call it a day. I know there is one more gem to go, but as that seems the most dangerous we’ll leave it for a danger room session.”
The opal was the most destructive, and apprehending the mutant whose power it was had been very difficult. After a failed head on assault Hunter had stalked the woman for hours, waiting until she dropped her guard, then he darted in a subdued her. She had been put into a specially designed cell to restrain her. She’d broken free three times during the projects course, and each time caused at least a dozen deaths among the staff. Once she had even gotten close to Paragon, but Hunter had managed to intervene before Paragon was exposed to danger.

Despite the confidence boost she was currently feeling, Iris was grateful she didn't have to continue, especially in her current location. She nodded, and flicked off the light, allowing her body to return to normal at the same time.
She glanced over at her phone. "All right. Maybe Crystal will be online again by then. I think she keeps logs of our training sessions. Maybe they can help. Somehow."
She let out a deep sigh. "Well, I guess that's that. Guess I'll have time now to actually unpack decently."
There was a brief pause, as her gaze unfocused a bit. Her thoughts very quickly returned to everything that happened in recent days. She still felt overwhelmed by it all; it would be a long time before she would be able to function normally again, without jumping at everything little thing, or having a stray image bring everything flooding back.
She swallowed against the lump again forming in her throat, but she managed to look Hunter full in the eyes this time, smiling a bit.
"Thank you. I guess talking does help a bit."
----------------------------
By the next day Iris had again worked herself into a tizzy. Getting her room in somewhat decent order had kept her mind occupied for a while, but as night had drawn closer, the thought of using the opal again refused to be pushed aside. Her sleep had been restless, as usual full of nightmares. Ebony also decided to pick that night to have one of her 'evening serenades', yowling and screeching at the top of her feline lungs. Iris could only pray that no one would complain.
And her phone refused to charge. It still red low battery, and kept turning itself off, which meant that she couldn't call Crystal. Depsite Hunter's kindness and easy-going attitude, Iris was more than nervous about training with him on her own. Having Crystal present would have eased that.
Iris couldn't stop fidgeting with her shoulder, and kept tugging at her shirt. She couldn't seem to get that image of the lakeshore out of her mind......
After saying goodnight to Paragon Hunter went to review they day’s findings. At least four of her gems still worked, and she’d shown exceptional control with her water gem. Watching the footage over again he was reminded of Ian Green, the mutant whose power was liquid manipulation.
The kid had always been a laid back and slightly mischievous character. That personality trait had been transferred along with his power to the tanzanite gem. Obtaining Ian for the project had been very easy. He was an orphan and Hunter had adopted him. Not two hours after taking him form the orphanage he was in the Bogden clinic and a part of the project that created his daughter.
He was a little worried about tomorrow. Miranda East, the donator of the opal gem, had been a strange individual. She was completely single minded, attempted to achieve her goal at any cost. That coupled with her power had made her very dangerous. The single mindedness along with the power was now in the opal gem. Tomorrow might turn out to be a rough day for both of them, but he hoped it wouldn’t come to that.
*****
The next day Hunter knocked on Paragon’s door. “Can I come in?” he asked.

Attempting to relieve some of her tension, Iris picked up Ruby's snoglobe and shook it.
She hoped Tricity had explained things to her and Nika; she didn't want them to think she was avoiding them. Maybe she should right them a letter, explaining what was going on, and for them not to worry. Then again, how could she tell them not to worry when she was worrying herself sick?
The knock and Hunter's voice had the exact same effect on Iris as it had the day before. She jumped, and the snoglobe fell from her hand. She made a grab for it, dropped it again, and caught it again, landing on the floor on her stomach in the process.
"J-just a second..." She bit her tongue in annoyance at her stuttering, and her klutziness. Tio Max had once told her that tall girls tended to be clumsy, but this was ridiculous.
She got to her feet, replaced the globe on her desk with one hand and reached out to open the door with the other. "Sorry. I-I'm still a bit.... jumpy...." That was an understatement. She took a deep breath to settle herself a bit. "Um, I just think its fair to warn you, I really don't trust this fifth stone. Evey time I use it, I black out, and I don't remember what I do. I don't even know what kind of power it has, or what it does. Are you sure about this?"
Fast healer or not, there was such a thing as a lucky shot. And the fact that she didn't know what the gem did, or what she did under its influence, had her stressed nearly to her maximum. And lately Iris stressing out seemed, inevitably, to lead to trouble.....
“I am,” said Hunter with a reassuring smile, “but it’s clear that you’re not. If you don’t want to then we won’t try it now. There’s no rush, take all the time you need. But as for what it does, that much I do know. Your friends told me about it when you used it… before.”
He didn’t want to drudge up her memories of what happened, but he couldn’t very well say he knew because he gave her the gem. “It sort of makes a windstorm around you and allows you to make concussive blasts. But as I said, we don’t have to test it unless you want to.” He wasn’t going to push her, as in her current state it would just make things worse.
The opal gem had been the biggest failure. It had taken them a while to discover what the gems did to Paragon’s psyche. It became all too apparent after opal was implanted. During the first test she’d killed a technician who had been there to record the test. He himself had been blasted back and impaled on a steel rod. Fortunately he’d equipped her guards with tranquiliser weapons, so they subdued her before she did any more damage. He wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea of using it again, but he felt more confident this time as he knew what to expect.

Concussion blasts?? That would explain the damage in the hallways.... But who had been on the receiving end??
Iris gulped. She sat on the edge of her bed, head in her hands.
There’s no rush, take all the time you need."
"We'd both be old and gray if I waited that long...." she mumbled.
<"Crystal, where ARE you?"> She looked up and glanced at her phone, for once wanting to see that irritatingly bored figure, and hear the snippy comments.
But the hologram wasn't going to push her this time. This time she was on her own.
Almost in a rush, as if she didn't want to think about her decision, Iris stood up and walked out into the hallway, nearly tripping on the cracks in the floor. Maybe if she didn't think about what she was doing, it would be easier to go through with it.
Best thing to do after falling off a horse is to get right back on, so said her Tio and Tia.
<"But riding a horse doesn't get you or your friends half-killed...">
Hunter could see she was determined to go through with this, so instead of offering her a way out he would now support her decision. He caught up with her as she hurtled out the door and walked along side her down to the danger room. They met no one on the way, but there were signs of repair work going on. As the reached the danger room Hunter opened the door and motioned Paragon inside.
Once inside he tapped a console and three walls appeared. “Ok, we have a quick and simple test her. Use the opal gem to demolish the three walls.” As none of the other gems had shown side-effects from what ever she had been expose to he really hoped that this one wouldn’t either, as she could do the most damage with this one. However, just incase he had a tranquiliser gun hidden about his person. He just hoped he’d have no cause to use it.

<"You can do this. Don't think about it. Just do it. You'll be fine. Hunter will be fine. Unless you lose control. Again.... Don't think about it, don't think about it, don't think about it... Just don't...">
Unfortunately, the more Iris tried not to think about it, the more she did think. Her nightmare image of the destroyed mountain filled her mental vision to the exclusion of all else. Her heart was pounding like thunder between her ears. She refused to look at Hunter, afraid she might lose her nerve if she acknowledged that another person might possibly be endangered by what she was about to do.
<"You can do this! You can do this! You can do this!"> Everything around her was a blur.
"Ok..." She inhaled sharply and started again, nearly tripping over her own feet as she came to a halt in the center of the room. "We have a quick and simple test here. Use the opal gem to demolish the three walls."
She nodded shakily, still not looking Hunter in the face. Instead she turned her gaze to her targets.
"Three walls. I can handle three walls. They're just walls, no feeling. No danger to anyone," she muttered under her breath, barely audible.
<"At least, no danger as long as I stay here.... I can't stay here forever.... What if someone were here? But... someone is here.... What if I hurt him? Ooo..... I can't do this...">
By this time Iris had almost completely talked herself into turning on her heel and making a headlong rush back to her room. She even took a step backward. However, during her entire mental rant, the image of the opal, and what it could do, had grown larger and larger, until it filled her entire focus. Her body reacted to the mounting stress, and her mutation took hold on its own.
Multiple shades of color began to appear in her subtly lighter hair. The grey in her eyes gave way to a firey, yet cold, twinkle. Her body relaxed almost instantly, and straightened to her full six-foot height. The sound that Iris always seemed to find herself running from in her nightmares surrounded her fully, the undulating harmonics enough to make a normal person's hair stand on end.
Slowly, as if she were memorizing every detail, she looked around the room. For a brief moment her gaze fell fully on Hunter. Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly, as if she were trying to remember something. Not recalling whatever it was she was searching for, she continued with her scan of the room.
Her attention came to the three stone blockades.
"Demolish the three walls.” She recalled the task set before her, though not the reasoning behind it. However, the fact was that walls were made to block access to a specified area, or to give said area definition. Thus that made walls obstacles. And obstacles could not be tolerated.
Iris held out her right hand, the one sporting the firey-colored jewel in its palm, out toward the first blockade. In a matter of seconds the annoying screech lowered in pitch, until it became earthquake-like, and blasted forward. Though the attack was unseen, the results were not. In rapid succession the three stone structures exploded into rubble, as if they were made of sand. She walked forward to examine the debris, attempting to put a reason, or function, to its original forms.
Hunter watched as Paragon seemed to be battling some inner daemon. His enhanced hearing meant that he had clearly heard her mutter under her breath. Then she activated it. The hair and eyes changed as normal, and the sound storm that had surrounded Miranda now erupted into being around Paragon.
When her gaze landed on him he tensed all his muscles in preparation to avoid an attack, but after a time she looked away and focused on the walls. As the sound storm’s pitch lowered he recognised the preparation for an attack, and remained where he was. Soon enough Paragon had pounded the walls to dust.
Now came the tricky part. In the last few test he had conducted before cancelling the project Paragon had been able to follow a preset task with the opal gem, but after that she shifted to defensive, and in the altered state of mind most things she perceived as a threat.
Hunter was now motionless save for his eyes, which followed Paragon’s every move. If he stayed still he was unlikely to attract her attention, and so avoid having to dodges attacks and then subdue her. However, he readied himself to explode into movement at a moments notice, as opal was never predictable.

Iris spent several minutes trying to figure out what purpose the now-destroyed walls had served, to no avail. She didn't remember that this was simply a test of gem.
Suddenly she sneezed, and some of the dust kicked up into her eyes. She turned quickly and began blinking furiously. The noise around her increased in volume briefly, giving vent to the irritation that her mind felt, but that her body wouldn't show. She waved her hand, still blinking, and now tearing a bit. The rubble was swept roughly aside by another blast, scattering rock shards and dust everywhere.
Slightly confused, as her current lack of emotion didn't register 'frustrated', she straightened and stepped back from the cloud of dust. She looked around again, frowning a bit. She noticed Hunter again, but since he hadn't yet moved, she dismissed him again. Not finding anything else deserving of attention, Iris sat on the ground, and crossed her arms, staring straight ahead. Until some other task or threat was brought to her attention, such as an approaching stranger or her stomach growling, she would stay put until the gem power wore off on its own, over an hour later.
(OOC: Sorry, rushed again. Feel free to godmod a bit if to move things forward)
Hunter prepared to move when Paragon got dust in her eyes and the sounds storm became angrier. Instead of attacking, as he thought she might, she simply blasted the dust away from her. Having no threat to respond to and no need to fulfil Paragon sat down, waiting for further stimuli. He had no intention of giving her that stimulus. Remaining motionless he let his mind wonder back to the first time she had used the opal gem.
They had only managed to extract what they needed from Miranda a few days before. Paragon had had six months with the tanzanite and aquamarine, getting used to them. But getting impatient Hunter had three gems implanted this time around, the onyx, gypsum and opal. The onyx and gypsum tests had been uneventful, just a change in her vision. He hadn’t stretched to see if she had the other powers, as he knew from sampling the two brothers that they required focus to utilise. The next test was opal, he remembered it vividly…
“Very good Paragon,” said Hunter with a big smile, “you can now play hide and seek in the dark with daddy.”
Paragon, in her yellow dress giggled as the lights came back on. They’d spent the last twenty minutes playing hide and seek in a training room with the lights off. She’d been able to see clear as day, even better than him, and she’d found him every time.
“Now, we have one new gem to try, the opal one. Do you remember what it looks like?” he asked. She nodded determinedly that she did. “Ok then, go ahead and turn it on.”
Paragon scrunched up her face in concentration. Her hair and eyes began to change. She had been so happy when she first saw the colour changes that the gems caused, and so he had a mirror nearby so she could see herself. However, as he stood behind her and watched her in the mirror he knew something was wrong. Paragon’s usual happy expression had disappeared and was replaced with the blank one that Miranda always wore. Also a sound filled the room, the same storm of sound that Miranda had around her.
“Well?” Hunter asked, “What do you think of this colour?” Instead of answering Paragon turned to face him, regarding him with a calculating stare. “Paragon?” he asked, kneeling in front of her, “What’s wrong?” He reached out and touched her shoulder when the room exploded.
He was sent flying across the room and before he could think about what had just happened pain flared as something erupted from his stomach. Looking down he saw a steel rod that formed part of a jungle gym had pierced right through him. When he looked up he saw that the room was in chaos. Everything had been knocked back by the blast. The mirror was shattered, and shards of it were impaled in several lab workers, some of who weren’t moving. There was blood everywhere around Paragon.
Gripping the rod he slid himself along it to try and stop this when a dozen guards entered the room. As one they raised their tranquiliser darts at Paragon, but before they could fire a concussive blast from Paragon sent them reeling. However, another squad of guards had entered from another door, and their darts hit home. Paragon crumpled in a heap.
Pulling himself off the steel rod he dashed over to Paragon as the guards checked the injured lab workers. Paragon was alright, just unconscious. The gem and deactivated when she lost consciousness. Pulling out the darts he picked her up and was suddenly reminded of the gaping hole in his stomach. In his concern for Paragon he had forgotten about his injury, but the pain now threatened to buckle his legs. Defiantly he remained standing as he started to carry Paragon to her room. He got halfway there before handing Paragon to one of her minders. Much as he wanted to put her in bed himself, he didn’t want to get blood in her room.
Refusing help he made his way to the infirmary under his own power. Knowing that he only needed some rest the staff simply gave him a bed. He awoke the next day to find his stomach completely healed. Changing into some fresh clothes he assessed the injury report. While most only had minor injuries several had broken bones and one man was dead when a shard of mirror had impaled him in the neck. As preparations had already been made he went to go and see Paragon. She was back to her usual happy self, and couldn’t recall the events of the day before…
Two weeks later the project had been abandoned. The failure of the opal gem, coupled with the personality altering that the other gems had induced was too big of a flaw, and the scientists couldn’t see any way around it. That had left the question of what to do with Paragon. After deliberating it for some time Hunter had decided that it would be best if the gems were removed and she was put up for adoption. That way she could lead a normal life, free of his influence.
Until recently that was what Hunter had believed had happened. He was still in the process of tracking down the man who had failed him, and when he found him he’d have the man cursing his mother for giving birth to him. The sudden absence of sound brought him out of his thoughts as Paragon slumped unconscious. Looking to confirm that the gem had deactivated he moved over to her and shook gently trying to wake her. “Iris, Iris, come one, wake up.”

Fingernails on a chalkboard, locusts singing at dusk, a baby crying at the top of its lungs, metal scraping against metal, a jet fighter screaming overhead; all of them and innumerable other painful sounds converged together as one, punctuated by the boom of giant footsteps shaking the ground. Iris covered her ears against the shrieking harmony, trying in vain to block it out. The ground below her shook, preventing her from standing upright. Instead she slumped forward, curling into a ball on the ground.
"Stop it!! Make it stop!!" Her own cries melded into the painful melody screaming over her head. "MAKE IT STOP!!!"
Iris woke with a gasp, reflexively scuttling backwards a bit as she sat up. She blinked furiously, and it took several heartbeats for her to realize she'd been dreaming.
She looked around the room. Everything appeared to be intact, with the exception of those walls. Only dust remained where they had been. But nothing else looked to be damaged.
Hunter was kneeling next to her. He, too, seemed to be unhurt. She closed her eyes and drew several deep breaths, to get herself under control again.
"I-I'm sorry. I don't know wh-why I black out like that. It's like.... my mind shuts down. And the Nightmare starts all over again...." She inhaled and slowly let out a shaky breath, and opened her eyes. "I'm sorry," she again apologized. "I-I'm okay now...."
However, the frantic beating of her heart claimed otherwise.
Hunter gave Paragon a reassuring smile. While she said she was fine, he could hear her heartbeat and it was racing. He had never seen her change back from the opal gem on her own and didn’t know that she would pass out. Opal was turning out to be a bigger flaw than he realised.
“It’s alright,” he said, “do you remember what happened?” from what she had told him earlier along with what he already knew about the opal gem it was unlikely that she remembered much. The test confirmed that the opal gem was still as unstable and dangerous as before, and he would not ask Paragon to activate it again. He even briefly contemplated having it removed, but it was now a part of her, and she’d grown up with it. After some contemplating he decided to leave it, for better or worse.
