The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Iris followed his gesture with her eyes. Inhaling sharply she pulled her hand away, as if the mirror had burned her. Nothing happened. She leaned forward for a closer look. Spiderwebs of ice decorated the frame, and had begun spreading across the mirror. Tentatively, she tapped at the glass. An audible crack sounded, startling her back a step, and that part of the glass split. Her mouth dropped open slightly.
”You should be able to lower the temperature even further, thus allowing you to freeze other objects and liquids besides water.”
Was this what Crystal meant?
But... how was she able to make ice? She looked at her arms, and her reflections again. No signs of frost or chilled breath. She held out her hand and gently blew on them. Sure enough, a layer of ice crystals came into being. She pulled at them with her free hand, and they followed, molding into a slender dagger.
Hmm.... A puzzled frown crossed her face. So, she could play with ice again. That wasn’t unusual. What was the catch? Was there something else to freezing things that she wasn’t able to do with the tanzanite?
Lost in thought, she began playing with the dagger, tossing it up and catching it. Since she wasn’t paying attention, she missed one toss. The blade slipped and nicked her finger, and landed on the water bottle on the floor, spilling it everywhere.
”Ouch!!” She stuck her finger in her mouth, and snorted. ”Smooth move, Iris,” she muttered and reached down to pick up the now empty bottle. Before she reached it, the water began to bubble. Her eyes widened again, and she jerked back. The water followed her, floating into the air in a wobbling bubble.
Her mouth fell open yet again. She poked at the bubble. It moved, continuing to hover. She twirled her finger. The water followed her motion, creating a miniature cyclone in the air.
She looked down. The ice dagger was still present. She reached down and picked it up, looking from it to the water in amazement. Two separate gem powers, active at the same time? But... how? She looked at her reflection again, momentarily frozen in place. Suddenly she spun on her heel.
”Lights,” she said aloud. ”Where’re the light controls?” Before Hunter could reply she rushed over to the Danger Room control panel. A split second later the lights were doused, leaving the room completely black. She looked up and around. It took several seconds for her to adjust, but sure enough, she could see clear as day. With a delighted, almost child-like squeal, she again switched controls, this time flooding the room with intense light. Another few seconds of readjusting, and her vision was perfectly normal.
”They all work! Together! At once! Haha!!” She rushed over and hugged Hunter tightly, grinning hugely. Abruptly another thought entered her mind, and she quickly pulled away. She stood still for a moment, her gaze unfocused. She stood there for a long moment. When she finally looked up at him again, her expression was awed.
”They’re gone...” she all but whispered. ”All of the emotions...”
Indeed, at least for the moment, all of the random emotions resulting from use of the other five gems had vanished. No overwhelming fear, no overconfidence, no sluggishness. None of it. She felt fine!
Hunter watched Iris form the ice dagger, willing her to use the other powers. When she dropped it ad knocked over her water bottle he watched with a grin Paragon couldn’t see as she manipulated the water. Realising herself what was happening she ran to the light controls and plunged the room into darkness. His eyes quickly adjusted, but she then turned the lights up, causing him to shield his eyes from the brightness. Once the lights returned to normal he looked across at Paragon who was grinning broadly.
“Now that’s impressive,” he said with a smile, “so you feel fine? No personality change? If so then there’s one last power to try, the concussion blasts.” Ingram had done it, he’d succeeded where the others had failed, he’d eliminated the flaws.

“Now that’s impressive. So you feel fine? No personality change? If so then there’s one last power to try, the concussion blasts.”
The concussion blasts. A flash of overwhelming fear washed over Iris, but was gone so quickly, her expression didn't even change. She shrugged it off as a normal reaction. After all, that mutation had always been nothing but trouble. But maybe this time, when she actually knew what she was doing, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Maybe....
<"Something isn't right. There has to be a catch. There's ALWAYS a catch. Something is going to happen."> That little bit of logic tugged at the back of her mind, trying its best to be heard and understood.
She bit her lip, considering it for a moment. Well, nothing bad had happened so far, and it had been at least five minutes already. With the other gems she'd felt the emotional changes instantly. Maybe they were gone for good. It would be a wonderful advantage.
<"There's ALWAYS a catch,"> the logic insisted.
But they were still in the Danger Room, and she still had the tranquilizer program set up, just in case. And even if that went wrong too, Hunter was there. He would know what to do, right? So, what's the worst that could happen?
She made her decision, and shoved the concern out of her mind. Raising her eyebrows, and taking a deep breath, she smile at Hunter. "Plug your ears," she warned.
<"Okay. Sound.... sound.... How to use sound?"> She wasn't sure how to even activate the power, as she could never remember what she was doing. But aftwerward her ears were always ringing. Ringing.... Hmm....
She closed her eyes, trying to find a way to connect with the opal's powers, without connecting with the opal. Quiet at first, then slowly growing in volume, the sound storm made itself known. The annoying shriek was greatly muted, but it was there. She winced, for the first time realizing why the power could be so devastating when out of control.
"Can you bring up the walls again?"
She waited for the three obstacles to reappear, again solid as opposed to stone dust. Since she'd never consciously used this power, it took some time to figure out how to channel it. The noise raised and lowered, as if someone was playing with an invisible volume button. She felt her body vibrating a bit with the effort of manipulating the sounds. The vibrations were tricky to alter, and she wasn't sure how much force she was actually holding, but eventually she felt confident enough to manipulate them into an attack.
Finally, when she thought she'd built up enough energy, she held her arms forward, and aimed for the center of the first wall.
But.....
<"What if I miss??">
Just as the attack released, another wave of fear washed over Iris, sharper than the first, like a shock of electricity. Her gasp was covered up by the sound of the wall shattering. The force of her blast was even greater than her initial blast two days ago. It not only destroyed all three of the walls, but continued on to the Danger Room wall, impacting without hardly slowing down.
Iris turned, coughing as a dust cloud blasted back and enveloped both of them. The dust made her eyes water, so at first she didn't see the hole in the wall.
A hole that didn't lead to the outside of the Mansion, as it should have. Instead it led to another room, and huge place, with..... machines?
She took a step closer to the wall and saw.... people? Not students, or teachers.... One of them was wearing.... a lab coat?!
She turned to look at Hunter. "What is this?"
(Sorry, rushed, I'll edit if I need to when I get back.
Hunter watched as Paragon summoned the sound storm. He didn’t react as the sound rose, and watched as she fired her concussive blast. This blast was strong, stronger than the previous one. It blasted clean through the walls and took out the danger room wall as well exposing the vehicle bay.
Hunter froze. The lab was exposed. When she rounded on him demanding to know what was going on he didn’t respond. He was trying to think his way out of this, but he was drawing a blank. There was no choice, he had to explain. “Ok Iris, I can explain. Just clam down and I’ll tell you everything.”

Eerie stillness, followed by unprecedented violence. That is one way of defining the ‘eye of the storm’. It is also a fitting description on the brief seconds following Iris’s accidental destruction of the fake Danger Room’s wall.
This was not the Danger Room. This was not the Mansion. There were no people at the Mansion running around in lab coats, except perhaps the DocProf, or military uniforms. Nor were there people with gun standing around. There were numerous kids and teenagers, experiment with different mutation in public. She did not see any teenagers beyond that wall.
Her breath became shallow and rapid again, as stray facts randomly clicked into place in her mind. The lack of students in the hallway, and even the entire Mansion for a day. The reason she was expected, supposedly by Tricity, to stay in her room, and only see one person. All facts which she’d believed without question, and all told to her by that same person.
“Ok Iris, I can explain. Just clam down and I’ll tell you everything.”
”Calm DOWN??” Hunter’s words were like a catalyst. For the third time within a few minutes fear shook Iris to her core. She bolted through the hole, attempting to get as far away from him as possible. It was almost a repeat of when she’d gone haywire at the Mansion. Except that, the instant she was out and standing in the vehicle bay, the fear vanished and anger flooded in to take its place. She whirled back to face Hunter again, fists clenched.
”Where am I?” she hissed. The sound storm howled around her, giving vent to the fury she was experiencing.
Upon seeing Paragon the guards began moving. They immediately headed for the armoury to grab tranquiliser weapons. Hunter’s standing orders were that she was not to be harmed, the fact she’d just blown a hole in the wall did not change that. Hunter paid no attention to them, Paragon had his undivided attention.
“You’re in a safe place,” Hunter said in a calm voice, slowly walking towards Paragon and being careful to make no threatening movements, “No one is going to hurt you. I only want to help you Iris. That is why you are here, so I can help you.” She was getting angry, and with the current power she had there was no telling what she could do. He needed to calm her down and quickly.

Movement in the corner of her eye caught Iris’s attention. Several of the uniformed men were headed for a door, most likely the entrance into the heart of this building. Without a second though, she raised her arm and swept outward. Several elongated shards of ice shot out and away. Morphing into a set of wicked looking blades halfway there, they embedded themselves in the floor in front of the door, stopping the men short. She moved her hand again, and the blades melded together, and grew upward, freezing the door shut. She had no idea who they were, or what they were trying to do, but she didn’t want any more appearing from behind that door either.
“You’re in a safe place. No one is going to hurt you. I only want to help you Iris. That is why you are here, so I can help you.”
If you survive, you'll be stronger.
Iris wasn’t sure why that phrase popped into her mind right at that moment, but the thought of Kaz and Syn, and what they had put her through.... And here it was happening again.
More movement. Iris whirled on her heel. One of the guards had something in his hand. She assumed it was a two-way radio, or something similar, which meant reinforcements. Her mutation reacted before her mind did, and the sound storm released some of its fury. A sonic blast shot forward, scattering the uniformed men. Two of them were not able to escape the blast’s path, and were blasted backwards into one of the smaller cars, shattering the windows.
It kind or reminded her of a stunt out of one of Jackie Chan’s movies. That guys was crazy, but hilarious.
A random giggle escaped Iris’s throat. Why she found that funny, she had no idea.
Hunter saw that this was going badly wrong and if he tried to contain Paragon she would either do heavy damage or potentially lethal force would have to be used. Neither was acceptable. That left him with only one option.
“Everyone stand down,” he ordered. Everyone moved to obey, stepping back and standing well clear of Paragon. “Open the doors.” Someone hit the door release, causing morning sunlight to flood into the vehicle bay. “You’re free to go,” he said, motioning to the open doors.
The gem would ware off given time. He could follow her at a distance when it did and then try to reason with her. Something suddenly occurred to him. She had just giggled, like she did with the water gem. Could it be? Had James failed?

“Everyone stand down.”
The clicking sounds of weapons being either unloaded or lowered echoed through the vaulted area. For some reason the sound startled Iris. The grin disappeared from her face as she backpedaled a few steps.
“Open the doors.”
Though the garage doors opening made a much more ominous noise than the clicking firearms, Iris looked over her shoulder, regarding the source without emotion. Her eyes adjusted easily to the light flooding in. The sun had begun its ascent, so it actually had been dawn when she woke not long ago.
“You’re free to go.”
She turned back to face Hunter. Why was he letting her go this easily? Why had he done this to her in the first place? Why the charade? How could fooling her have possibly helped keep her safe? Safe from what? And how under the sun could he have possibly thought that he was helping her??
How could she have trusted him?
The screeching storm faded away slowly. Clenching her fists, she turned and ran for the open door.
As she passed one of the last rows of cars, a guard stepped out from behind a Hummer. When she had first blasted through the walls, he had taken cover and remained out of sight. Despite orders, he reached out and grabbed her elbow.
”Hold it.”
In that instant, the storm broke. Narrowing her eyes, Iris pulled away, then swept her arm out. A concussion blast sent the man soaring over the tops of the vehicles. Where he landed, and in what condition, she didn’t care. As far as she was concerned, his actions were those of the rest of them. With an angered yell ice daggers shot away from her body, falling in a deadly shower on the rest of the guards in the garage. Still obeying orders, they retreated rather than turning on her, but she was furious now. Several shards of ice changed direction and pierced the gas tanks of nearby cars. She pulled the leaking gasoline to her in a lethal bubble, then aimed it for those guards that she could see.
Suddenly she gasped, and covered her mouth in fear. The gasoline halted and fell to the ground with a wet splaatt!, dousing a pair that had taken cover behind the line of vehicles. A halfway hysterical laugh escaped from behind her hands. She backed away from the one-sided battle, and for a brief moment her eyes fell on Hunter yet again.
Her silver eyes hardened, like steel, and her expression went blank. With a wave of her arm, she sent a sonic blast forward at him; numerous trucks, cars and men were caught in the blast and sent flying along with the attack. One of the vehicle impacted with a wall, and exploded in a defeaning roar. The gasoline lit up with fire which, if not taken care of soon, would continue on its path through the gasoline drenched floor.
The sound storm returned, louder than ever. Iris clapped her hands over her ears, even though the noise wasn’t affecting her. Her back burned fiercely; she felt as if she were standing in the middle of that fire.
<“Oh no! What’s happening??”>
The steely expression vanished in a flash. A sharp, short scream left her throat. She turned on her heel and ran for the nearest unscathed vehicle, an SUV that had amazingly survived the blast intact, and was facing toward the outside of the garage. Her hands searched frantically for keys. Finding them she started the ignition and hit the gas as hard as she could. The vehicle screamed out of the compound, taking part of a fence with it, before reaching the main road.
Hunter made a note of the guard who was foolish enough to disobey his orders. The man was launched across the room by Paragon and landed heavily and uncomfortably. With a nod to a guard the man was swiftly executed. Hunter was far enough away to avoid the shower of icy blades, but several guards took hits, after seeing how he dealt with the fool who disobeyed him they all retreated.
Paragon gathered a blob of Gasoline and seemed to be about to utilise it for an attack when she stopped and laughed once more. There was no doubt now, Dr Ingram had failed, and she not only had all the powers, but all the flaws as well. Firing a concussion blast at him he threw himself aside to avoid it. However, the blast exploded a vehicle and began a fire that threatened to take the whole place up.
“Contain it now!” Hunter roared and people sprang into action to contain the fire and deal with the injured. Turning back he just caught site of Paragon fleeing in an SUV. He raced for a helicopter, calling for a pilot. Leaping into the seat the pilot was just sending the helicopter skywards as Hunter strapped himself in. It wasn’t a combat helicopter, but it was fast and agile, which was what he needed. Sighting the SUV the pilot set off in pursuit, but maintained his distance so as not to appear threatening.
