The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"Not a problem" Linely spoke kindly to his charge, called Shelby from the file that he'd read on her. She'd had a run in with a particularly nasty mutant, she was lucky to get out alive, and of course if that creature found her again...it didn't bare thinking about.
Normally, Officer Hermione Gallagher would be doing this, but she was unwell. Of all things a common cold had taken down that woman, so it had fallen to the only officer that wasn't normally busy on a Sunday afternoon: Detective Linely.
"Officer Linely, a pleasure to meet your acquaintance Shelby." Linely spoke with as kind a tone as possible. His job was to escort her for the day and then he would be back to sorting out issues with protests. It actually made a nice change.
"So where are we going to now?" He asked carefully, he hoped that the counselling session had gone well for her, but from the look of mild frustration on her face... it was clear that it might not have done. He hoped that this job would be relatively simple, with no mutant attacks ideally. He'd had enough of that for one week.
Linely saw a woman come into focus, so this wasn't going to be the X-Man he had met before, in fairness, he needed more subtlety this time, rather than an individual that could freeze someone solid. Stealth and speed were what were needed here, and getting any details they could about Judgement Day's new appearance upon NYC was absolutely crucial.
His hopes for speed and stealth were answered well, the woman that approached him looked somewhat like a human-cat hybrid. He'd not been given the files of the X-Men, but the fact that she knew his name made it obvious that this was indeed the person he was supposed to meet. He couldn't help but smile in satisfaction.
"Yes I am Linely, I assume you're the X-Man they sent me to help with this? " He asked expectantly, he certainly hoped she was, the skills of someone with the speed of a cat would be very useful. Plus the somewhat rugged look she had to her lessened the chances of their cover being blown. He offered a hand in gentlemanly fashion.
"Just so you know, we're likely to come up against pretty heavy opposition if this goes pear-shaped. "M" Dealers aren't exactly known for being pleasant people to deal with at the best of times." It would be worse if he had any customers with them, most of them couldn't deal with their powers even at the smallest of doses.
The chances are the fog would conceal their approach, but they had to move quickly. "Thanks for doing this by the way, I know that you X-Men often have a lot of work on your hands, but trust me, if this dealer is working with the group we think he's working with, we'll need as much information as we can get."
The evening was settling upon the scene. Shadows were getting longer,, no longer content with hiding among the trees of the park, now bathed the whole park in their shade. A thick fog shrouded the Park, shrouding everything in a heavy cloak of shadow and mist. One could slip and fall and no-one would even know. People were rushing into their homes to avoid the autumns colder bite, no-one wanted to be out in this. No-one except PD Linely.
Linely was nearly invisible, an outline in this weather, given the grey colors of his clothing. The cold was mostly avoided thanks to the protection of three layers: Trench-coat, armor jacket and suit. Mostly. Linely couldn't help but shiver in the cold. He knew what his orders were though, and he would make sure he followed them. Meet with the X-Mutant that they had assigned him, find the "M" dealer who was apparently working for a criminal mutant group, put an end to the madness. At least temporarily.
He leaned against one of the trees, wondering whether he was early , or late-or maybe it was the fault of the X-Men's agents. They could be unreliable at times, but they were in general good people. Though their powers were normally pretty scary. He checked his watch: 9pm. The X-Man was now late. He wondered who it would be. The MRC had told them that it would be a serious operation, so Linely hoped they were experienced.
The cold was getting through even his goat-skin lined leather gloves, "whoever it is better arrive soon" he mumbled to himself, not only did he need to properly brief them, but the dealer would likely have sold his remaining stash if they didn't get to him quickly. The latest shipment had been disrupted thanks to Linely and one of the X-Men, and it hadn't been very pretty or subtle...
Linely sighed , and water vapour emitted from his breath, he had little doubt that should it have rained there would have been sleet falling down. Fortunately he was saved that indignity of appearing wet and disheveled in front of an X-Man. Thank God. He started slowly tapping his foot, if only to keep moving in order to stay as warm as he could, and also out of impatience.
Linely sighed, she was clearly surprised that a mutant passing for a human could have issues, it was his experience that the non-obvious mutants tended to be more powerful, and more dangerous. "Fortunately the UK has good ways of dealing with mutant teenagers, being relatively tolerant compared to Australia, I was assigned to a powerful telepath, Dr Pritchard, who helped me control my powers. At first it was difficult, but it got easier with some of the techniques I learnt, so my teenage years were not rife with me continuously knocking people out. After I found out my powers could be lethal, due to losing control, I realised there needed to be a positive way to make use of my gifts. So I joined the police force" He couldn't deny that he could cause serious harm to individuals if he lost control...
"I know that I have mastered myself, and therefore I can feel comfortable with others. So long as I don't overexert myself, there is little danger that I would use my powers against anyone accidentally anymore." How could she apply this to her life was her real question now, I mean what was the point in telling her if she couldn't learn from his experience?
"Yes, your abilities make you unique, and embracing your differences and using them for the benefit of yourself and those around you helps considerably. For example, you don't have to eat, I assume on hot days you are a lot stronger and faster than your average human if my knowledge of photosynthesis is correct, surely there is a way to make use of that? Perhaps in sport? If you start to get more powerful, which is possible for a young mutant, you could become a force for great good, or great malice. Do not think of your mutation as a burden, but rather as a gift from God. " He hoped all this was helping her, these kinds of lectures from a 26 year old were probably sounding a bit weird, but she could hopefully at least see that he was a far more experienced mutant than her.
Linely laughed at the quip-genuinely, Rachael seemed to have a very good wit"Well remember you did wake me up after I fell asleep during the TV, I was a teen once as well..." Now he was sounding like an old man. However, her lack of experience was showing. Her assumption that he was wrong, another typical teen thought was amusing to Linely, but he was polite enough not to show it . It was time to give her a full explaination
"There was nothing I could do about the fact that I hospitalised and nearly killed a fellow competitor during a fencing tournament. That's how my power was discovered see. After that people were utterly terrified of me, I was the "guy who could knock you out with a look", but it did mean people stopped trying to beat me up. " He paused and then continued.
"There was nothing I could do when I caused a man's heart to give out when he tried to mug me. Yes, I killed a man completely by accident, I was trying to get away, but it happened nevertheless. I realised that I could let what I was define me and treat myself like some kind of freak or special snowflake , or I could embrace who I was and use it when I needed to. I use my gifts to contribute to society, and against those who would abuse their gifts. There was nothing I could do save accept myself."
It was clear discussing what it was that caused the pain was uncomfortable for her, and she wasn't the first to find his power disturbing, he remembered how Officer Schwartz looked when he had told him for the first time. "It's no more morbid in my mind than throwing a fireball at someone, or freezing them solid as some of the X Men can do, I'm told. There may be other ways my powers could work, I do constantly practice with them on willing subjects, or not so willing criminals. It may even be helpful to those who can't remember what happened, sometimes you have to confront the trauma. Looking at new angles on powers takes a lot of practice" Linely smiled again , this time more calmly than before. "I'll stop lecturing you now, we're nearly back at the station"
Linely couldn't help but wonder what Rachael had forgotten that had caused her so much pain, it wasn't from that long a time ago, and she was avoiding his question. How could a 15 year old girl be put through that much pain? There was clearly more to her than met the eye.
Linely smiled at the sense of humor that Chief had. She always did like to mess with cops, especially when they were undercover. Ever the police officer, he decided to inform her as to his business in Chrysalis. "I'm on the track of a rather unpleasant empath...he's been spiking drinks. Thanks for playing along." The man had bought a drink for Chief, oh boy, this man really was painting "I'm the scumbag you're looking for" all over him wasn't he?
"Hey you!" Linely shouted to the man approaching the booth where Chief and he were sitting. "You look funnnnny" He continued to slur his speech, although he quietly got his handcuffs out, just in case he needed to make a quick arrest.
Meanwhile the bartender was serving another customer, a rather scrawny fellow that had to show his ID in order to even be served. He was young, and wasn't unattractive. No, he wasn't some typical man in a trench coat, he wore a sharp, clean , suit. He looked at the bartender, an exquisite specimen, the epitome of female grace and beauty. This would be all too easy for him, as it had been so many times before.
"Hello there, may I buy the pretty bartender a drink?" Honey giggled at this, thinking she'd humor the kid. "Sure." She poured out a shot of an overly expensive whiskey. "That'll be $10" she smiled again at the man, she had a sense of humor when it came to flirting, and for some reason this guy seemed nice. The air around him had this sweet smell that you just wanted to... thrive in.
>> "I heard a screaming child...So I came running"
Well that was just great, while he was sure Devon could look after himself, and Linely knew he was X-Gene, this girl was clearly very powerful, and extremely distressed. He just hoped there wouldn't be another-
Another fairy-tale creature appeared. Wolves this time, three of them and they looked angry, slavering from their mouths like in your typical Children's books. Big eyes, ears and teeth, all the better to track you down and tear you to pieces my dear. Their black fur , over-sized red eyes and curled, red claws gave Linely the shivers.
Linely had his baton out now, and came into what he assumed to the full view of the girl , the wolf pack was slowly approaching him, almost taunting. "Devon, I think it's about time you filled me in on what your actual powers were?"
The girl was not well at all, she was looking rather pale... Linely feared what could happen if she fainted while one of her little fairy tale creatures was still in place. At least the Dragon manifestation had dispersed, fading away like smoke.
She didn't seem so convinced by that joke. Teenagers never were, they saw their issues as the only thing that mattered quite often. Angst, angst, and more angst was the motto of all teens , mutant and non-mutant alike. "Believe you me Rachael, those girls will be jealous of you, they're busy wondering whether they look too fat in that dress, or whether the others will judge them based on their make-up or clothing choices, so they simply laugh at you because they're insecure..." Linely then groaned slightly. "I'm sounding like a secondary school teacher giving a lecture, but it's true I promise you."
She shuddered at the mention of his powers..well it was going to come up sooner or later. "I manipulate physical pain, if you have suffered physical trauma, I can make your body go through the same shock that the nervous system went through at that time. I don't know what caused that much pain to you, but I know how it felt, and where it was, and how long ago. If I'm caused pain, I can also make people feel the same pain." ... "I do wonder what could have caused such crippling pain, I felt some of it... I feel an echo of what I cause you to feel, that's how the power works" It was a long winded explanation, but hopefully it would make sense to her. "They don't call sign me "Spasm" for nothing."
Linely noted a pair of teenage girls walking past the two of them, they looked at the green girl and giggled cruelly. Girls could be cruel. Teenagers would pick on anyone different, they normally weren't even anti-mutant from what Linely had observed after coming into one school in one of their ultra-PC "X-Gene awareness weeks", it was just to those kids, Rachael was different. Different was bad.
"Don't let those girls bother you. Put it this way, at least you don't have to worry about eating too much or too little." He smiled and patted his stomach-he was reasonable fit, but occasionally the startings of a pot-belly could be seen if he'd eaten too much junk food in the past few weeks. This was one of those times.
"And there's no need to thank me, those sorts of shelters often don't have the resources to look after young adults, let alone those who are mutants. Remember I kinda used my abilities on you as well..." It only worked if there was some kind of trauma there beforehand though, and Linely couldn't help but wonder what caused that pain. What or who could have caused such lasting pain to a teenage girl? Linely wanted to know, but at the same time... didn't.
"Anyway, we ought to get going" Linely turned , and with Rachael in tow, began the short walk to the police station.
Linely could only watch as Mellitus handcuffed the robot with his old reliable metal handcuffs. He was every inch the traditionalist in that respect. What was the point with handcuffs if your average mutant could break them? Linely's cuffs were made of sturdier stuff than most, being designed not for the comfort of the wearer in mind but entirely upon restraint. It often gave him some pain to work with if they tried to run.
The robot was now on the floor, giving a few jolts as its system began to fail. "Backup, Backup" it began to call down its in built radio, in a distorted version of the sickly sweet voice it had used earlier. Linely bent down towards it and made sure he showed the badge
"PD Linely MRC-Your backup has arrived." The robot ceased to moan as much as the light in its eyes faded "commencing shutdown proced... " it whined, and then was entirely silent. Good. That was nearly a very close shave indeed.
"Very good job Mellitus" Linely said, smiling "I must admit you saved us a lot of time with that quick thinking. So you can make shoes and gloves do stuff huh?" It might've been more than that, but Linely was sure he had that potential partner in the MRC the sergeant was so keen on him getting.
"Now, we just have an angry mob to deal with"...Linely half gestured towards the crowd , which was still fighting, bricks were being thrown, mutations being used. Linely hoped that what he had just seen wasn't Mellitus' only trick.
Man this guy was an ass, going on about how people weren't inherently good and that he didn't care about his fellow human beings. "For all your elfin looks, and probably powerful mutations sir, you are still human , whether you like that or not." He probably embraced that as well, he was dealing with your classic rational self-interest maniac. But what he said next surprised Linely.
>> "A target of opportunity, Detective Joseph Linely".
..He had taken his badge! That was a n offense, but this man was clearly too brave or to arrogant to care. He must be in communication with people , Linely thought. Only way he could have possibly had the serial number on the badge processed. He'd met these types of mutants before, and their self-importance and expectation that he might be intimidated by their connections or powers was mostly amusing to Linely. >> "You can bill me for it if you'd like" He took the badge back confidently. Damn he was clumsy ...the badge was near crushed? "If you think that I'm supposed to be impressed by your ability to communicate with others then you are very wrong sir, and I shall be billing you for the badge. " There wasn't an inch of fear in his voice, this kind of mutant were all the same. Linely had faced down individuals that could turn themselves into things much bigger, and much badder than this sorry excuse for a LOTR cosplay.
"Oh and I figured you weren't the guy I was looking for the moment that you walked in. I'm guessing the victims would have noticed the scars on your face. Must have been quite painful eh?" Linely kept his voice low, careful, completely neutral. Linely knew exactly how painful that injury had been, he could sense the pain from his face, had been a while back...now his nerves were more attuned to the elfin man, he could sense the fellow had been through a lot, various pains flared from all over the man's body. He had no reason to pull these pains to the surface, why turn a situation violent for no good reason?
"If you know my name though, I would like to have the pleasure of knowing yours?" He stared into the man's eyes, letting him know he wasn't even moderately afraid. Linely allowed him to answer. "Now, I have a job to do, thank you sir for your cooperation...so much as it was." He ended the conversation there , and gradually staggered towards where Chief had got to...he couldn't let Chief be taken in by some scummy empath.
It was a rather nice leather booth, and Linely made sure to sit down opposite Chief, that way the man couldn't look directly into her eyes (not that it would be easy to do that anyway). Hopefully he could clarify what was going on to her, that way she would be on watch.
"Stay away from me!" the little girl was screaming at Linely, as two of her drawings of dragons breathing fire nearly cooked him. This was serious. Her parents had been arrested already, illegal immigration. It was a hard job doing this kind of thing, but he had to follow orders, even if it meant sending a 10 year old Mexican girl on the next train back to the South with her parents. Unfortunately it wasn't turning out as planned.
A Knight in shining black armor then appeared, waving his dark sword at Linely in a typical fairytale style Linely dodged out of the way, he already had a few grazes from all the jumping around he had been doing. Great! This was just great! "I'm not here to hurt you little girl, I'm a policeman, coming to take you to your parents"...this appeared to work somewhat, though her tear-stained cheeks were not getting any less bloated. The knight disappeared. It appeared that she wasn't able to sustain it long...well that was a relief.
The little girl was dressed in ragged clothing, Linely didn't know exactly how long she'd been in NYC, but it was only a few weeks tops. That was why it had been such a shock for her , Linely assumed when the police broke down the doors of the docks warehouse that had been their "home" At midnight no less. Her cheeks were glistening in the light that was shining through the splintered wood
The girl was just about showing some willingness to go with Linely , tearfully nodding and tentitively approaching the police officer . "You're not in trouble at all, we will do everything we can..." Linely was cut off by another high pitched wail from the girl, who had seen something behind Linely...or someone.
Another knight manifested, this time in dazzling white armour , sword and shield, standing in between Linely and whoever was behind him and ready to attack. "Idiot!" Linely bellowed, turning round to see who it was. "I'd just about got her calmed down!" Another spout of dragon fire later and Linely had forward rolled further away from the girl.
The silhouette of a man he thought he recognised was there. "Devon? What the **** are you doing here!?" Linely shouted to the man. Hoping that the fellow adult mutant wasn't stupid enough to make any sudden movements.
Walking off the stage was a relatively simple task. Though bizarrely it seemed that Mellitus had taken off her shoes. Linely walked carefully round these shoes, wondering if this was something to do with the junior police officer's powers. Still he walked carefully towards the now barefoot Mellitus.
He soon found out what Mellitus' deal was with taking off her footwear. He heard a loud crash as the META Bot crashed down to the floor, Linely jumped at this, clearly he needed to wear those kind of shoes more often!
>> "Turn around so I can get at your cuffs!" He didn't pause in following her command, now she'd done this the robot would be very keen on using lethal force, and obviously they didn't want that. He turned round and prayed that Mellitus was able to do things in time with PD Rustbucket, otherwise they were all in trouble. The main risk of course was the robot calling for backup....
Linely was continuing with the act, and certainly wasn't expecting some rather large somewhat elfin individual, scarred to appear behind him, sniff and then see through his act very quickly. If Mr Spiker had overheard that, Mr Spiker would certainly disappear. The soft tone of the man's voice made it clear that perhaps only Linely noticed...he hoped. Mutants with enhanced senses were annoying.
The man was looking amused now, self righteous. Linely felt it best that he knew what his business was in terms of acting drunk. "Hey you over there...I heard ya" He staggered up to the silver-haired mutant in a drunk fashion , carefully avoided touching the large fellow and flashed his badge in as subtle a way as he could towards the man. Enhanced senses? Well hopefully he would see it and no-one else would. Leaning in the typical "drunk with something to say but actually going to say nothing" way he spoke carefully to the muscular, elfin man.
"If you're going to call someone out for acting drunk I don't blame you, I'm on the track of a particularly bad man going after young women...I'd really appreciate it if you play along until I manage to catch this guy" Linely said this as seriously and softly as he could. "Now if you could please just pretend I said something drunk-funny that would be great." Hopefully he could get away with this, if the spiker was watching...it merely looked like a drunkard speaking to a man inappropriately.
It was Chief! Sure you didn't get that many anthropomorphic shrimps around these parts, but in the light of the nightclub, it was difficult to tell exactly who it was until he was closer. She had spent some time helping with the drunkards one night. Linely could remember that one time where a stray bullet ricocheted off her body. If she was inclined towards that line of work-she'd make a damn fine MRC police officer. Linely of course, didn't know exactly what her situation was, but he would ask her at some point when he was finally off duty. Her antennae went up in recognition. Good. Then she wouldn't blow his cover. He caught her stare with as much seriousness as he could manage.
Somehow Linely doubted that the guy she was talking to was the scum he was after. Too unfocused, not trying to get Chief to drink (or leave her drink if she had one), didn't fit this guys MO whatsoever. Impolite too, merely saying "Hello" and then shutting him out entirely. Couldn't really blame the fellow though, considering the police officer was acting as if he was pretty wasted.
>> "Yeah we are. I was just saying how this is my first time here. I assume not yours or have you been here a while?"
Linely added to the charade "Been here a while? I've seen her looooads of thimes" He said it in a particularly annoying drunk-booming voice that he'd gotten so used to. He hoped Chief would play along, though he looked apologetically at her for divulging information. I need to do this he tried to convey to her through his eyes. He mouthed "big trouble" to her , behind the fellows back.
>> "It's a good 'lace. Got duh kinda soul not a whole lot o' uzzer 'laces got. Like a san-ily al-nost"
Quite. Most clubs were loud, sweaty and full of drunk people. Three things that Linely really hated. Clubbing was not his thing, going down the country pub (a famous British pastime) was another matter though. Still Chrysalis was different, very mutant friendly, and normally helpful to cops. He tried to keep an eye out for any smooth-talking guys who were trying it on...no such luck other than the fellow talking to Chief.
"Yeah, I lllove it here" Linely said, slurring his words even more, even though the Whiskey had basically no effect on him. Like he'd get drunk on one unit of good whiskey? Still, he hoped Chief would get the message. He tried mouthing "empath" to the mutant, hoping that she would get the hint about what this fellow potentially was.
