The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

He saw the lights shift as she changed them. It took her a few moments to get things going but slowly he saw the shadows lighten. Max smiled, she might be a newbie but she got the hang of it pretty quick. With this position taken care of they would only have to do the drummer's and bassist's spots.
"Looks good." He said as she began to float down to him.
She played off his question well, but he could tell she was holding something back. It was to be expected, they had just met after all. Still light based mutations weren't something Max had ever thought of before. His mind started racing, imagining the kind of practical effects you could do on stage with a gift like that.
"Party tricks huh? Somehow I think you aren't giving yourself quite enough credit." He said with a laugh.
She had pegged him as a gravity manipulator, and on the first guess too. Not too shabby.
"Yep. Gravity. I don't know about useful though, learning to control it had some crappy days. You think I wear this God awful fanny pack cause it looks cool? I got tired of all the crap in my pockets floating away when I used my powers." He said laughing at the thought.
He touched her hand and gave her another round of zero Gs to play with. For the drummers spot he slid a white chair over onto the spot, it beat having to crouch there to get the height right.
"It was helpful for dance though. I can do lifts and head spins like there is no tomorrow," He said, pulling up lights four through eight,"You are gonna make the same adjustments on this one, but I'm gonna be over here adjusting the gels on these lamps. Let me know when the chair is in the middle of each of the colored circle."
He floated over to the other side of the stage and moved the fixture. On the ground the green, blue, and yellow lights were all slightly off center of the chair, he kept pushing on all three waiting for her to give him the word.
"So is that friend you were looking for gonna be disappointed that you stood them up?" He said with a devilish grin, poking fun at their earlier uncomfortable exchange

Max let out a small sigh of relief. Juliette didn't seem to pay his awkward remark much attention, and he was grateful for it. She took to the air with more grace than Max had expected. Usually weightlessness made people clumsy and they freaked out, Juliette rose up to the light easily. In hindsight Max realizes he probably should have given her some warning but he had been to flustered to think properly.
She asked for instruction and he obliged.
"Okay. There is a lever on each side that control the shutters. They determine what shape the light comes out as." He began.
He turned on the light she was floating next to. A circle of light shone down on him.
"This one is a circle, which is fine. There's a knob on the side of the light. Moving it effects the focus of the light. Turn it left and the light gets softer turn it right and the light gets sharper." He continued.
He pulled up the next two lights, which were positioned one behind him and one on the other side of the stage.
"These three lights are the general lighting for the lead singer who will be standing here. Lights two and three look okay, but the one you are at is a little softer then the others and the radius of the light it's putting off is smaller. Light generally combines pretty well but since that light isn't putting out as much focused light as the other two it's making these bad shadows on my face and torso." He continued, gesturing towards the dark splotches on him.
He might not be the best at small talk but Max knew lighting and theater. Talking about his craft was boosting his confidence and he felt more and more comfortable as he went.
"Move the shutters so the circle covers my whole body, and turn the knob right until the shadows fade," He said, "Oh also my power works in 3 minutes bursts so you will feel it starting to wear off in a bit. Just come down and I'll give you another boost when that happens."
He stood there letting the light wash over him and waited. His curiosity was still peaked from her display a moment ago.
"So glowing? Do you have any other surprises for me while we are doing this?" He said.

Max had expected there to be some harsh shadows, he had expected to have to move the lamp a bit to get a better angle. What he hadn't expected was for Juliette to start glowing. The light from the lamp was dimmer then it should have been, and at first Max thought it was a power issue. As he watched he saw Juliette start to glow. She was radiant, and not just in the "she's a knockout" category.
No wonder she had been so calm about him being a mutant, she was one herself. He had no idea what she could do but he felt a smile break across him face. Max heard her answer him, keeping her eyes from meeting his. He floated down and landed on the stage in front of her.
"You are beautful." He said before he could stop himself.
Instantly he felt like smacking himself in the face. What the hell was that man? Way to freak her out. Not wanting to let the awkwardness solidify he instead decided to just push through.
"Well, this plan isn't gonna work, so you're probably gonna have to be the one to move the lights. Otherwise I'm never gonna know how it really looks." He said with a grin.
He paced the floor of the stage for a moment before continuing.
"It take too long to have you climb up there, so we will just have to do this instead." He said.
He reached for the tablet and touched the girl's hand. With a small push of will he extended a field of nearly zero gravity around her. It let her float and keep her weightless.
"I'll be the light model, you fly up there for me." He said smiling.

She went on to the stage and stood. Max felt bad, out of the two jobs being the person standing on stage was the duller of the two positions. On the other hand it saved him the hassle of finding something else to use to test for shadows. She told him her name and he smiled. Juliette. It was a nice name.
"I'm Max." He said, fiddling with the focus ring on the lamp.
He looked back down at her, she was placed just right. He'd just turn on the lamp, make sure it was focused right and move on to number two. He flipped the switch on the side of the 10,000 watt lamp. It was primed to go on.
"So how long you lived in New York? I moved her about a month ago still getting used to the city " He supplied.
She was giving him a look, probably trying to figure out how he was floating. He got that alot with his power, people thought he was telekinetic or could fly. The best part was when he made something else float and messed with them.
"Okay. Hit the slider next to the #1 on the tablet and bring it all the way up." He told her, waiting to see where the dark spots would be.

She seemed embarrassed. Why she would seem that way after Max was the one who just got caught floating in the air stupidly he didn't understand. She didn't seem at all nervous about him being a mutant, in fact she acted more like he had just caught her in the middle of something.
She told him she was looking for someone and for a moment Max was about to offer to help her. It was cut short when instead she offered to help him with the lights. He froze for a second.
"Why would she offer to hang out here and help if she was looking for someone?" He asked himself.
"Dude. Hot girl is offering to chill with you who cares?" The other part of his brain countered.
"But I don't want to inconvenience her." He thought back at himself.
"Inconvenience her? You haven't had a date since you moved here. Get your head in the game." His mental counterpart protested.
"Yeah, actually that be great if you aren't to busy," He said aloud," I still have to focus and cycle the lights through."
He handed the tablet out for her to take.
"If you'll go on stage and stand on the center x. I'll adjust the lights. Hit 1-3 on the program. The lower number are all the presets we don't have to mess with those. I'll go get a ladder." He ezplained.
For a moment he actually almost went and got the ladder, but the cat was already out of the bag, no need to make his job harder. Instead he nullified gravity around himself and floated a foot up in the air, hovering on the spot.
"Actually on second thought we probably don't need the ladder." He said nervously.
He floated back up towards the stage, up towards the first light on its rack high above the stage.
"I didn't catch your name by the way." He said, trying to keep a conversation going to avert any awkwardness.

$800 for one delivery.
Even as he approached the massive building Max couldn't believe his luck. His financial situation was looking worse and worse each day. This wasn't helped by the fact that he had spent a good $150 dollars building his new combat yo-yos.
Max had always been a passive guy, but small town Virginia hadn't prepared him for the streets of the big apple. He'd been in more scraps since moving to town then his entire life put together. Having the steel yo-yos tucked away in his fanny pack gave him comfort.
The idea to weaponize a childs toy had came to him a few nights before. He'd been tossing around a yo-yo in his apartment when the string broke and the small disk smashed a lamp. He had ran out to hobby lobby and the local hardware store and set to work. The finished project were four solid metal yo-yos wound with thin, durable wire. Two of them were blunt attacks while the other set had blades built into the mechanism that opened when the yo-yo spun out and reached a certain speed. They retracted when coming back. Perfecting that trick had cost Max a number of tiny cuts across his hands and arms.
Fun new toys aside Max had been commissioned to deliver a small package to the Jaager building. Upon delivery he would score $800 and be on his way.
He entered the lobby and walked up to the receptionist desk, where a woman sat. He had told her he had a delivery for "John Smith" and the woman took his picture and handed him a small ID badge reading "Max Rosewood-Guest."
"Just take the elevator up to the tenth floor. Take a left, two rights, and follow the hallways to the second door on the right." She said.
Max walked to the elevator and got in, punching the number ten. This was gonna be cake...
How many times can you walk the same white, sterile hallway before you lose your mind? Max was close to finding out. He'd taken a left and then a right and walked down the halls. He took the next left, or was it a right? And wound up where he started. This went on and on as Max walked through the odd hallways, security cameras glaring down at him as he went. Finally he stopped and leaned against one of the walls.
Max felt like there was an anchor sitting in the pit of his stomach. He heard a girl's voice call out a response. He had been caught with his pants down. Normally Max kept his mutation hidden, preferring to let people know him for who he was before finding out what he was. He spun in mid air and looked down at the girl.
She was gorgeous. Being an artist Max was usually very in tune with his emotions, a side effect of this was he was prone to infatuation rather easily. The girl looked a few years older then him, her dark curly hair framed her face beautifully.
He was suddenly aware of the fact that he was wearing old work clothes. He knew he looked stupid, hovering in midair wearing sweatpants and a sleeveless shirt with a fanny pack. The girl looked at him in confusion, but Max saw no malice in her eyes, so if she thought he was a freak for being a mutant she was hiding it well.
He glides over to her and landed a few feet off.
"Oh hello. Alright? Yeah I'm Max. Mr Marks hires me to do the-" Max began, his voice somewhat jumpy.
The tablet he was holding fumbled out of his hand. He bent over and grabbed it before it could hit the ground. Behind him the lights started flashing, starting one of the preprogrammed runs he had made.
"Lights sometime." He concluded gesturing towards the stage.
"I didn't know anyone was supposed to be using the space today, sorry. I was getting this place ready for a concert tomorrow. Can I help you with something? Also maybe we could keep what you saw from Mr. Marks." He rambled.
A small, logical part of his brain finally kicked in and shouted in his brain,"stop talking you idiot."
He nervously laughed. Mr Marks was a nice guy, but he was not a tolerant one. If he found out that Max was a mutant Max could kiss these theater gigs goodbye. Without these jobs he'd have no income and he'd have to go crawling back to his parents with his tail in between his legs.

"Yo Skrill drop it hard!"
Max bobbed his head as the beat dropped. The quick, rapid melody pounded in his ears. He could feel his body, even locked in combat, shifting to the beat as it accelerated. Back down on Earth Elliot squated and launched himself upward.
"This guy is a special kind of monster." Max thought.
Fighting under double gravity should have worn this guy down to exhaustion by now, but he just kept coming. To be able to leap up with basically double his normal weight on him wasn't easy. Max could feel the gravity trap he had on Elliot pushing down on him, but it wasn't going to last much longer.
Elliot flew upward, his arms taking the brunt of Max's attack. For a second Max almost felt bad, the change barrage had been a cheap trick, but he had needed an opening. He hadn't expected Elliot to actually take the hit. He had expected the green man to try to dodge, not power through.
The knee came up and slammed into Max's stomach. The fact that Max was so much lighter, coupled with the fact that Elliot's kick was being pulled down blunted the hit somewhat, but it still hurt like a bitch.
Max used the moment of impact as a chance to grab Elliot. His knee had flown in between Max's outstretched hands. Max twisted his arm and locked it around Elliot's leg at the knee. His free hand reached up and he grabbed his hat, he was gonna need to hold on.
He started spinning in midair as fast as he could, throwing his power around himself in an attempt to keep Elliot from getting any balance. 2Gs to the left, half gravity to the right, he changed it up as quickly as he could, building momentum as he spun. His body was used to the gravity, but the sudden change was putting a strain on him. He couldn't keep this up for long. He just needed to hold on long enough to build up enough power to toss the Martian back down to Earth and finish this.

Max smiled at Darkshift. She seemed like a pleasant girl. Her story of how she had come to have her name was fascinating to Max. He had never really spent an extended period of time with other mutants, hearing about a group of them that chose to reject the titles of society and branch out was interesting.
"I'll probably stick with Max for now." He said with a laugh, "Me and my parents might have our differences at the moment but they've always been pretty supportive X-gene or no X- gene."
Of course at the moment he was a little miffed at his folks. They had cut him off after he refused to come back and live with them. NYC had seemed like a good idea to them before he left, but I guess a month later and no college or job prospects changed their minds. This left Max with a studio apartment to pay for on his own and little financial stability.
He watched the girl shift her arm and was amazed. It was pretty cool. He could mess around with one of the laws of physics, but it felt more like a gimmick to him then something to inspire fear or awe.
Darkshift's power however, seemed so versitile.
"That's pretty fantastic. Obviously you can do mammals and reptiles. What about birds? Oh could you create a bunch of octopus tentacles that be sweet? Or maybe a patagium like flying squirrels? Base jumping would be a blast." He grinned.
He realized he was rambling. It was a bad habit of his when he got excited. He stuffed another bite of sandwich in his mouth and swallowed.
"So how long have you been in New York? What brings you to the big apple?" He asked.

The moment he saw Elliot flip Max knew he had made a fatal miscalculation. His leg flew past its target, and for a moment everything slowed down. He saw Elliot's leg coming at him, he anticipated the kick, but was helpless to do anything but cringe as the strange, green man's leg cracked him across the face.
The world went fuzzy as Max flew away from Elliot. This time he didn't will himself to stop he just slammed into the floor and rolled. His vision swam as he came to a stop. He wanted to just lay there. He could taste blood in his mouth and he felt sore all over. Maybe just staying down wouldn't be too bad.
"Let's dance."
Elliot's words from before popped into Max's mind. He had come here for a dance battle, and without realizing it he had gotten one. Since the bell first rang Max had let himself be thrown off guard. Elliot had controlled the song, the tempo, the beat. No wonder Max was getting his butt kicked. No more.
He rose up slowly and stood, fumbling slightly from side to side. He reached into his fanny pack and pulled out the headphones he always kept in there. He put them on. They were already connected to his iPod and with a quick button press the bassy, upbeat hip hop music flooded his ears.
He let himself go to the beat, his aches and pains fading into the vibrations of the treble. He raised his guard and called upon his power. He cut the gravity surrounding him by a third, enough to keep him from floating but plenty to give him a speed and jumping boost.
"That's my jam." Max said with a grin.
He flew at Elliot, rushing him with his augmented speed. He lept into the air, soaring above the green man and spun, his hands once again reaching into his fanny pack.
Spare change is such a pain right? Max's hand gripped the coins he had stuffed in one of the fanny pouches over countless putchases. He pulled the handful of tiny metal disks out and threw them, coating them in 2Gs worth of force. They flew down at Elliot like a Shotgun blast of hail.
If it hit him it hurt like hell, but Max had his eyes locked on Elliot, looking for any indication on how and where he would move.

"Nice to meet you Elliot." Max said.
He shrugged when questioned about his mistaken belief in the context of the competition. He knew it was a dumb mistake but he didn't feel embarrassed by it, those kind of things just happen.
Elliot stood, and Max's smile faded into a frown. Normally when he tagged someone with some extra gs they acted freaked out, or struggled to adapt. This guy didn't seem nervous, he didn't seem thrown off. He seemed calm. He was cracking jokes like he knew something Max didn't. That more than anything sent a cold shiver down the young dancer's spine.
Elliot was bobbing back and forth, moving with grace he shouldn't have been capable of weighed down. Max knew he only had a limited time before his gravity trap would wear off and Elliot would be back to kicking him around. He had to end it before that happend.
Max took a step back, planting his back foot. With a burst of effort he threw the strongest kick he could from his hip, propelling himself with a burst of sideways gravity. His leg flew out towards Elliot's stomach in a flash.

The man fell, the crowd cheered and booed and called out, and Max landed before the man without getting hit again. He hadn't expected to get out of that exchange so easily and he felt a small surge of relief.
The man struggled and Max felt bad for the guy. He had placed himself under double gravity a few times to get used to the experience but it was never pleasant. Having it randomly done to you must suck.
He heard the man speak his question and Max relaxed and smiled.
"I'm Max. What's your name?" He asked with a nod, "Sorry I had to do that to you. Honestly till the fight started I thought I had entered a dance competiition."
The sooner Max could get his money and get the hell out of here the happier he would be.

Max thought he had the guy for sure. He closed the distance easily and was almost at the guy when he saw him pull himself back. The tongue from his one hand slid down and back before redirecting itself at Max.
"No, he wouldnt" Max thought, just in time to get a face full of tongue.
Now Max had bad a few strange romantic encounters before moving to NYC, but having a green man lick him square in the face definitely took the cake. The tongue smacked against his cheeks and he had to hold back a gag.
His fist cleared the distance and he connected with the green man, though most of the power in the hit had been negated by his surprise. He felt his hand touch green, smooth skin and in that moment releases his power.
He extended a field of gravity, double that of Earth's as he tried before, and tossed the invisible field over the man. Hopefully that would slow him down a bit.
Max pulled his head away from the tongue and braced himself. He knew the counterattack was coming, but this close and with both of them in midair he wouldnt have many options other than to take it.

Max saw the man jump, and geez could this dude jump. Max's kick flew under the man and the augmented pull of gravity kept his momentum going. He spun just in time to see pink ropes shoot out of the man's hands and wrap around something high above them.
"What the fu-" Max began
Crack. The kick hit him in the stomach and he soared sideways from the man a solid six feet. He dropped his control on the gravity around him and fell to the cool floor, sliding a few inches before coming to a stop.
He scrambled to his hands and knees and looked at his attacker. What he had at first thought were ropes were in fact some kind of tongues, wet with saliva. What the hell was this guy. Max rose and took a defensive stance.
This didn't look good. This guy was fast and insanely agile. Max's stomach hurt and he figured he would have a nice bruise the next morning. If his gravitational pull hadn't been pulling him with the force of the kick he knew he'd have suffered a serious blow. He couldn't go toe to toe with this guy. He had to fight smarter not harder.
"If I can't catch him I'll have to let him come to me." Max thought bitterly.
He sprang forward, rushing the man and leapt at him, throwing a punch with all the force he could muster.
