The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It seemed that Margo was a little lost in her own thoughts as she took a second or two to hear Richard. She seemed to hesitate for a second then hopped into his car closing the door.
"Hey! Thanks, I hope I'm not too much trouble." She said water miserably dripping from her nose and trickling like melting icicles to the floor of his car.
"Too much trouble? Too much trouble?" Richard's voice was incredulous, "Margo, you are soaked to the skin and I am guessing that slight bluish tint to your lips is not a trick of the light or make-up. I worry that you are going to catch yourself a death of a cold and on top of that you look like you have not had a really good day. I offer you a ride and you wonder if you are being too much trouble? You really are a very rare and selfless person you know that?"
If ever there was an example of being too polite this was it. Margo seemed to be amazingly selfless. Perhaps a little too much so. But it looked like she needed a little TLC, and Richard was more than ready and happy to do just that.
"Right young lady, pardon me while I step into a slightly bossy older brother role, but unless you have a more pressing appointment elsewhere you are coming with me. Let's get you warmed up, get you some hot tea, or coffee if you prefer that and then I will cook us a bite to eat as I have not had dinner yet and you look as if some food would do you good. How does that sound?"
Richard enjoyed playing an older brother, and felt slightly protective of his young friend. to be honest he could be accused of being too trusting but at the moment he did not care. he turned up the heater in the car and directed the vents to gently waft warm air in Margo's direction. pointed out that her seat had a seat warmer built in, checked that she was buckled in and then pulled away from the curb. Smoothly accelerating towards his house. he hoped he was not being too overbearing and that he was not scaring her. You see underneath all that intelligence Richard was rather tender hearted.

Mary and Richard were fast becoming friendly aquaintences. She seemed to happily and eagerly wolf down the offered jerky and let him tentatively scratch her behind the ears. She actually moved closer and lay down next to him. closing her eyes in pleasure and letting Richard know that she was enjoying getting a good scratch. "I should get myself a dog" thought Richard. Could his day get any better, a good book, good iced coffee, good snacks, and now a friendly companion. Then shattering the beautiful scene came the panting teenager with the messy hair.
"S-sorry, she, uh, she slipped away from me. C'mon, we gotta go Mary."
Richard watched slightly amused at the teenagers attempts to order the dog to leave. This seemed to be the case of dog walks owner not vice versa. The youth tried in vain to move the mountain of a dog before giving up and admitting the inevitable, then announcing it to the world.
"Okay, fine, we'll stay." At this Mary lay her great wolfish head on Richard lap and stretched her neck out a little as if to say, "scratch me right there". A request which Richard was more than happy to oblige. He really should look into getting a dog, maybe a big one. Hmm would it play nice with cheeky?
"Um, I guess she likes you. Sorry again, she's...stubborn." He shrugged helplessly, "Since I'm stuck here, what's your name? I'm Alex by the way."
"Hello Alex, it is completely fine. Nice to meet you, I am Richard. Your dog is magnificent, may I ask what breed is she?"
The teen seemed to be either thinking really hard or trying to mentally "will" said dog to obey him. Richard hoped he would net get a hernia.

Getting employed was exciting, but it was also hard work, particularly as his employer had not given him the easiest of job descriptions. After a long day at work Richard was looking forward to getting home to his apartment, cooking himself a nice meal, perhaps he might have a glass of wine, or a finger of whisky to unwind. Tomorrow he would look for a climbing gym in town. Climbing always helped clear his head. He got into his his Golf GTI and began the commute home.
The weather, it seems was a bit schizophrenic. It should have been the start of spring. But without warning, it had turned from sunny from overcast, the temperature had dropped and it began to rain heavily, Cold wet rain began hammering on the roof of Richard's car. He was thankful for heated seats and waterproof cars. He was still driving on autopilot crusing slowly homeward when something fimilar jolted him out of his reverie. That hair, it was fimilar, that gait. It was margo! He pulled ahead of her and found a spot she would pass by. Should he call out to her? Was she crying? or was that moving of the shoulders shivering from cold. Richard could not tell. Were those tears running down her face or was her face just wet from the rain. One thing was for certain she did not look happy nor did it look like she had had or was having a good day. He rolled down the window and yelled. "Margo, you ok? Need a ride?" He gestured with his head for her to get in and popped the passenger side door. She looked chilled to the bone and no friend of Richard would be allowed to stumble about in the rain shivering with cold (at least that was what it looked like).

Richard was in a good mood. He had recently made a new friend who was a little more like a surrogate sister (See thread with Margo). He had recently found employment(see thread with Danny(Planned))under very unlikely circumstances. Employment that not only paid extremely well, to the point that with the first advance Richard had already rented a comfortable apartment with a garage underneath and had almost finished renovating it, but was more interesting than he could have ever dreamed of. While he was not a big proponent of violence, death or pain, he loved being an engineer and what could be more exciting, challenging and, well... Cool than being employed as an armourer. Normally an armourer would work on things like maintaining hand held weapons, which would be cool and exciting enough, but no, Richard had been instructed to design, assemble and outfit a group of individuals with sufficient hardware to "be prepared for anything". In short his job would be more aptly described by the title "war smith". Hence Richard was on top of the world.
Today was Saturday, it was sunny yet not too hot, a cool refreshing breeze blew intermittently, like some slowly fading ghost of winter past desperately trying to cling to its' old territory. Richard strolled to a nearby park with a Thermos of ice coffee in one hand and a good book in another. finding a good tree with nice shade he settled down to read, occasionally munching on some jerky that he had brought with him and sipping delightful iced coffee. Ahh, this is the life, he thought to himself.
After a chapter or two, Richard happened to glance up to see a giant dog trotting towards him. He? She? It was magnificent. It resembled some giant wolf hound from ages past as it gracefully trotted? No padded towards him. He heard someone yelling off in the distance and reluctantly tore his eyes from the amazing creature headed towards him to see a young teenager of around 16/17 yelling "Mary! Mary!" at the top of his lungs and running as fast as he could, making a beeline for him.
So the amazing creature's name was Mary! The fact amused Richard. Somehow the name Mary always conjured up images of little while sheep and to call what looked like a giant's war hound such a name well each to their own he supposed. Mary did not seem to be about to attack him, but he had a taser gun on him in any case. Hey he was new to this city, better to be prepared than sorry. Indeed Mary seemed to be heading straight towards the excellent jerky that he had.
Richard offered some to her and detecting no hint of aggression, began to reach out to stroke her, while speaking calmly and softly to her.

(OCC: Hope the post is not too long, Richard's mind works like that. If you want to I can cut it down a little, but that is how fast he thinks)
"Well...Um. You could start, technically, whenever you wanted - I have your working quarters set up already. As for said working quarters, I have your phone number, so I'll text it to you when you need it so you won't forget. Uh, hardware. You pick and choose. Right now, most of the weapons in storage are kind of ancient, so they'd need to be maintained in order to keep them in pristine condition, but you're to command the grunts who do the petty maintaining and do the bigger things yourself. You'd have free reign, really - as long as you make stuff that vaguely constitutes as weapons, you're actually kind of free to use the available resources however you'd want on the side. Er, healthcare benefits. Whatever you need, I guess? Yes. Whatever, really. I'd be fully prepared to provide you with even a place to live if you need one."
As odd as it might sound, Richar was getting the impression that his employer was not very confident in matters of employment. Perhaps he had recently come into riches or decided to cash in numerour investments. Regardless, if Richard wanted things sorted out it was becoming apparent that he would need to be perahps a tad more direct.
"Fare enough Mr De Carbas, can we put that in writing so we can both sign it? Something like you are hereby willing to pay x dollars per month/year for services rendered and provide medical insurance, dental, vision plan and retirement benefits etc would be most appreciated"
As sweet as this deal was appearing to be Richard would not rest completely easy until he had a signed legally binding contract in his hands, no sense getting the rug yanked from user your feet at the last minute, no matter how pretty or perfect said rug was. Right now that was sorted down to more practical matters.
Taking the paper Richard looked it over with a critical eye, nodded with approval and signed a copy. He was now an official employee of ..... some corporation of which Mr De Carbas was the CEO? Head? What did it matter, the pay was higher than the average market rate, the job description was Fantastic and all seemed well and good so far, almost too good.
"As for housing, I appreciate the offer but I believe that I have found suitable accommodation already thank you." It was all well and good to have a caring employer happy to provide for your every need but Richard did prefer some independence and freedom as regards personal space. Now on the the job description. Richard was on a roll here his brilliant mind processing and assessing information logically and attentively
"Regarding hardware, pardon me for being direct Mr De Carbas but I will need something a little bit more directed than to just "pick and choose". I am an engineer not an inventor, I take existing technology and either improve it slightly or combine it in such a way as to produce something that meets your requirements. But for the present lacking further direction this is how I intend to proceed. Firstly I am assuming that when you say you want to "be prepared" that you are intending to potentially ward off chaos and riots and the like and not to, say, invade a country or declare your own fiefdom. In that case you will probably want a small to medium sized well stocked arsenal of pistols, probably 45 caliber, sub-machine guns, assault rifles to start off with. I am assuming that your "grunts" are competent at handling such weapons as I am not qualified to instruct them, I am no sharpshooter or shooting instructor. Next you will probably want something with a bit more punch in case the need arises, as such I would suggest a small stock of sniper rifles, multi-purpose rocket launchers, mortar units with a variety of rounds, perhaps some heavy machine guns and a variety of explosives. I believe that I could select and maintain them. That I would not consider overkill and would probably be sufficient to secure any premises or guarantee passage even if New York turns to complete chaos and rioting."
Richard paused for a breath, logically he had started with personal defense as he assumed his to be employer was no Alexander the great reborn and assumed he did not desire to start taking over states and countries. So his employer would, most likely, be thinking of potentially mounting a defense or escape should things go very very south. Right, now that hand held weaponry and defense was dealt with, next came transport.
"Next, mobility, I would assume that you probably will want varied forms of armed or at least armored transports. I think that tanks and self propelled guns might be a bit of an overkill, limit mobility, be illegal and bring the attention of the authorities so I plan to steer clear of those, as exciting as they may be. I would suggest a variety of four to eight wheeled armored transports, all with the option of mounting weapons. helicopters and boats would also be an option. Finally there is the category of robots. Something like the Segway RMP440 LE would be a good start as that has sufficient payload to mount some weaponry as well as sufficient sensors and computing power to create a autonomous defense or attack robot. You could also think about a variety of multi-rotor vehicles and UAVs, as well as surface and subsurface ROVs."
Richard paused for another breath as he mentally reviewed his list. Had he missed anything?
"Of course price and budget size as well as time frame will dictate how much we can do. I am after all only one man, so to create one single robot may take a number of weeks, whereas to purchase and tune some guns could be as quick as a few days."
Richard was interested in how serious his employer was, how far he was willing to go and how much resources he wanted to put towards this titanic "project". He cocked his head to one side. "Yeah, I think that about sums up my initial thoughts. What do you think Mr De Carbas? Oh also do I need to think about potential fortification of.. Um.. where I work? Where exactly will I be working anyway?"
Richard wondered how his employer would react to the veritable fire hydrant of information that he had just unleashed in his direction.

"Drunk mutants sometimes get carried away"
Richard nodded, his imagination trying to conceive how such spectacular yet localized damage had been accomplished, with varying degrees of success.
"Ah! That explains things," he said, his glance once more sweeping over the bar. "I hope nobody was hurt. Do things get this interesting often?" Richard asked. Part of him was wondering if this would be a good place to become a regular, and if so would that significantly impact his life expectancy.
Saying a "Thank you." as he took the drink, Richard smelled the whisky, took a small sip and allowed the smooth concoction to swirl around his mouth before slowly swallowing it, allowing a contented smile to cross his face. "Ahhh, that is good, I needed that." He said smiling. It had been a long day, full of interviews, meeting new people etc.
"The Name's Melissa, i don't believe i have seen you around"
Richard who had been slightly lost in thought and the enjoyable contemplation of the complex flavor of liquor, turned his full attention to the speaker. He found the bartender to be an attractive looking woman with deep green eyes and a pleasant voice.
"A pleasure to meet you Melissa, my name is Richard." Richard replied smiling and nodding to her. He enjoyed meeting new people, especially when one could just be themselves.
"I just arrived here actually, interviewing for jobs." Richard said by way of explanation. he turned to take in the occupants of the bar. "Slow night I see." Richard said after a few more sips of his whiskey. He was not a heavy drinker and preferred to savor quality over quantity. After a few moments of relaxed silence, Richard asked.
"So what is it like here? Anything I should know or take note of? Any tips for the new in town?" He said smiling.
Bartenders tended to see and hear things. Richard had a number of things he was interested in knowing, such as how was the tension between mutants and humans (Thinking of his recent conversation with Margo), were there any areas that one should avoid etc. His intent in entering the bar however was to relax and unwind from a long day, potentially meet people and strike up conversations, not to pump bartenders for information. Hence he kept his tone and questions casual.

I had a question. If an Ex-Kabal member reappeared at Mondragon Labs having been absent for years, who would he meet there? Hades is returning soon and he has been out of contact with the world for the past 5 years who would he meet and who would be notified if he returned and tried to use his 5 year old access card? I know that Mondragon Labs has had some remodeling since then but I was hoping to use this to create an open/ Ex-Kabal/Order) intro thread for Hades when he returns. Any suggestions?

"Oh, will you just be quiet, No, but seriously, don't ever say that. Because you are amazing and all of that, and I'm, well, terrible. You're making me feel terrible about myself. Just accept the compliment when it's given."
Richard dropped his head slightly and made some small unintelligible noises, he was feeling slightly melty inside. "Fine.... ok" he mock sighed with a smile. He really liked Margo, and as much as she was embarrassing him slightly and teasing him, he had to admit that he was enjoying it. She was acting like a little sister, a thought that made him feel slightly more melty inside.
At least she had not heard his whisper, he though as his thoughts turned to less happy matters, but he firmly pushed them aside. He delighted in enjoying the presence of his new found friend.
"I don't particularly have anything to do, but, um, I'm thinking I should probably get back soon. And, definitely, yes to the hike or picnic. Whenever."
So she wanted to meet again, that sounded promising for the continued friendship.
"I understand," said Richard getting up and offering to help her up, like any brother would. "Here is my number, let me know when you would be free to go on an outing, or even if you just want to talk."
This was not an offer he made to anyone, only those Richard considered friends.
"So... I guess it is a farewell then." He paused, not quite sure of what to say, it was not as if farewells came easily to him. "I very much enjoyed meeting you and our little excursion." Drat it he was becoming formal again. "I look forward to hearing from you." He stopped, unsure of what to say next.

Richard took the firm handshake and returned it likewise.
"Well, this is awkward Makes it more convenient, though. So I'll cut straight to the chase - I'm looking for an armorer."
So the man kept his word, at least in the short term. Richard's opinion of Danny rose some more. Wait, did he just say Armorer? Up until now Richard had applied for such jobs as Automation engineer, mechanical designer, software programmer, for companies in the medical or manufacturing business. It was exciting enough that he would not get bored but hardly life changing. As old as he was, which might not be that old if the vibes he was reading of Danny were anything to go by, Richard was still a boy at heart, as the saying goings boys never grow up they just grow older. So the thought of working with weapons and things that went Boom had Richard INWARDLY, foaming at the mouth. Only his skills as a debater and presenter allowed him to show no trace of the joy that was bubbling inside of him, aside from the slight gleam in his eye of interest.
The man started talking again "No. Weaponsmaster? Arsenal...manner?
Richards day kept getting better and better.
"You get my point. I need somebody to build me weapons, and maintain and upgrade the ones I have. Never hurts to be prepared, if you know what I mean."
Danny had just handed Richard a slice of heaven as far as Richard was concerned. he did not really care what Danny meant. Him being in England and then in the remote and all consuming Colorado University had limited his exposure to the horrrific events of the Mutant registration act and the atrocities visited on mutants in the camps so he was not sure what Danny meant, but hey, it was always good to be prepared.
"It would be my pleasure and delight to accept. When do I start? Where would I be working? What sort of hardware would I be working with? Also is this an appropriate time to inquire about employment benefits?"
To be honest as long as Danny paid Richard enough to live on and perhaps provide descent medical insurance, Richard could not care two pence about salary and benefits but he key his professional demeanor, up till this point nothing was on paper, everything was just words. Later after the deal had been signed and Richard was alone, he would go and dance around the room singing for joy. But that was for later, for now he would continue to be the professional engineer.

"You know, when one deliberately avoids further exploration of a topic, it usually means something."
"That is quite true, but to be fair, you brought it up." Richard said as he smiled. He liked being cheeky now and then.
"Anything I might have had to say on it, you already said, and much better than I could ever say it. I don't have any particularly strong feelings about a growing mutant population in New York, I guess. It's led to a lot of conflict, and it's going to lead to a lot more conflict in the future. I don't get why people make such a big deal of it- mutants are people just like we are- I guess history repeats itself yet again. Like, the latest news story is always about some psycho mutant with actual powers, like that ever happens, being made an example of. Then it's all 'Mutants are a threat to society' and 'All mutants are evil!' I think it's dumb, to be honest. If only the world were as good as you are."
"Aww, you are too kind, I am not, you know.." Richard shrugged his shoulders "that amazing or anything, I am just, well human..." He was getting slightly embarrassed. One thing Richard had picked up for his time in England was how a lot of British react when receiving compliments, they then to shuffle their feet, and get slightly embarrassed, Richard was no different.
"...mostly" He whispered that last word under his breath. He was still trying to work out, what would happen if he was a mutant? Would that change who he was? What would that do to him as a person? What would change? What would stay the same? Would perhaps his new found friend who seemed to agree with him on viewing mutants and humans alike, if she knew that he might be a mutant, would she truly be so accepting? In the few hours since they had met Richard had began to grow fond of this young, long haired, cute yet relatively mature girl called Margo. He liked her. She was one of the few warm and friendly people he had met since coming to New York. The city that is eternally rushing about, filled with people who seem to spend the entirety of their waking hours rushing from one crisis to another. Hmm Margo was young enough to be like a little sister. Richard has always wanted younger siblings, hmm perhaps.... Naaa he was dreaming! He shelved that happy daydream along with the other gloomy uncertain thoughts about the X gene and returned to the present.
They had been sitting in silence for a while, he wondered what was going through Margo's mind. He was just enjoying the quiet, the trees, the walk.
"Hiking or a picnic sometime sounds fun."
Richard smiled, here was something happy to contemplate. "Why don't we go sometime? We could go by car or motorbike! What are your plans for the rest of today? I have none other than to poke around and explore, but I understand if you have other things to do."

"Thank you,As did I. But really, once you get past the fact that you're thousands of miles away from home, it's not really that different. I suppose it varies wherever, whenever you are. For me? I just appreciate the fact that I'm getting an education."
"I see, I guess so. Out of curiosity, which boarding school do you go to, as come to think of it, I was not aware the New York had any. You don't have to tell me if you would rather not."
To Richard, boarding schools were something that one read about but never encountered, and had a somewhat mythical quality about them. Hence the questions.
"I do enjoy a good hike,"
Wait, hold on a minute, what? Did she just pose him a challenging question and then evade responding to it? Richard mentally smiled, "not so easily Margo" he thought to himself. Smiling inwardly he casually asked.
"Perhaps we should go hiking sometime, or have a picnic, there is much of New York that I have not seen, I hear that there are some beautiful mountains in parts of New York. But back to your excellent question" Richard smiled slightly cheekily. "So Margo how about you? How do You feel about the growing mutant population in New York, come to think of it, what do you think about mutants?"
Her answer could affect how far this budding friendship would go, especially if Richard's suspicions about himself were confirmed.

"Oh, it's practically impossible to step outside in New York City without coming across a park of some sort,"
"Awesome! Lead on!"
"Well, as you know, my name is Margo. I am fifteen, going on sixteen, as you know- my birthday is this Tuesday. I live an incredibly boring life, no, really. Um, I've been up here for a good...eight? I don't even know....months now. Boarding school."
"Well, allow me to wish you an early happy birthday. What is boarding school like? I remember reading books growing up about characters that went to boarding school, and from the books at least, their descriptions of boarding school ranged from "It was amazing" to "It was the worst thing in the world" and every where in between. So I am curious."
Richard genuinely was curious, he had never been to boarding school and the whole concept of moving to another country/state just to go to school was a curious notion. He would be much interested in Margo's answer. Was that a twitch he detected on her face? He hoped he was not making her uncomfortable. Growing up Richard had an older sister but never any younger sisters although he would not have minded a younger sibling, so he was not always sure how to act around people who could, age wise, be a younger sister or brother. He tended to treat them as he would someone near his age, but that did not always work for reasons that he did not always understand.
"Oh, this reminds me of the first day of school,"
"Oh you mean the "Lets go round the room and introduce ourselves", lets make things slightly awkward thing? Yeah I know what you mean. I hope I am not bringing up unpleasant memories."
"Sorry, not to offend you or anything. But, well, not so much the man as his opinions."
"None taken, ask away, anything you want to know." Richard was happy to share, unless her questions became too personal, but he did not think it likely.
"Like... Um, I don't know. Um, what are your views on the growing population of mutants, in this particular city for example?"
Richard pondered for a minute as they crossed the street. They rounded a corner and happened upon a park with a trail. "Hmm, good question. Nice choice of trail by the way, I do enjoy the outdoors, hiking, camping etc. How about you?"
"But back to your question, hmmm. I honestly have not give much thought about it. In high school two of my good friends were mutants, Speedy Aron had rather green skin and ran really fast and Ariel, no I am not kidding, she literally and scales and well, swam like a fish."
Richard smiled as he remembered good times with his friends.
"I look at it this way, in the world there are people of many races, histories and backgrounds, I consider mutants similarly. Underneath we are all people, I don't judge people on what they look like or how old they are but on what is inside, what is their character like. As for mutants in particular, it seems to me that in some cases they have been given more power than some, hence they also have a greater responsibility when using their gifts. So I don't really think much of the fact that New York might have a greater population of mutants that other cities. Hope that answers your question."
He hoped that he was not boring her. He was also not yet ready to reveal the fact that he might, himself be a mutant. That was still something he was working through. If it was true, what could that mean for him, it raised many questions, many uncertainties. His greatest fear was that, it he was indeed a mutant, that he might lose control of his powers in such a way that he would harm those around him that he cared about. That was part of the reason that he had moved to New York. What better place to discover if you were a mutant, and if you were, what better place to learn about your powers and how to control them.

Hades
(Note that this first post is intended to cover the span of at least a week, posts there after will be in normal time, as the scene will ahve been set)
Richard had moved to New York not long ago and was in the process of negotiating an employment contract. He had also recently confirmed his suspicions that he was a mutant, a fact that he was still coming to grips with and processing through. He read online the the Sanctuary offered lodgings to mutants and welcomed all so he headed there. He was not quite in a mood to talk to anyone at the momeny and sought something to calm his mind. So, after getting a room and a bite to eat at the canteen, which was thankfully empty, Richard headed to the place that made him feel most comfortable, the machine shop. Or... what they called a machine shop.
"Hello? Hello?" Richard called out to the dark and dusty room as he fumbled for the light switch. Recieving no reply and finally finding said device, Richard turned on the lights and was greeted by a dusty room that looked like it had not entertained anyone for quite some time. There was dust and puddles of unidentified substances on the floor, half of the lights did not work, the machines were covered with dust and did not look well maintained, all in all a considerable state of dilapidation. (OCC: Order leadership, I hope tis ok to describe the machine shop in said state of dilapidation, if not, PM me and I will change it)
Richard was astounded, who would leave machines in this manner. He had noted that there did not seem to be many people about and had noted wear and tear about the building but this, this was unacceptable. Here was something he could do to take his mind off things, here, Richard could restore a world that made sense. designing and manufacturing always made sense. No matter how good or how bad a day you were having, if you placed this metal in that machine, adjusted the setting so and controlled it in this manner, you would always get the same result. It was orderly and logical, unlike life. So Richard set to work.
Observing that the computer in said machine shop was old Richard moved his own laptop over and got to work. He also powered up "Cheeky" a robot that he had built for fun during his research. Cheeky, looked like a supersized roomba and performed a similar function. Cheeky was designed by Richard to clean machine shop floors, to remove everything from grease, lubricant, spilt liquids, shavings and dust from floors. Cheeky had an aluminium exterior and was controlled by a credit card sized computer called an odroid. Cheeky was capable of accepting simple voice commands, could perform S.L.A.M and observed the world from an Xbox connect bolted to its top. "Cheeky, Charge! Map! Clean!" Cheeky beeped in response and went off to dock at its charging station before heading out to bap and clean the floor.
Having put cheeky in charge of the floor, Richard got to work categorizing what was salvageable in the machine shop. His progress was slow as each time he used his power, he could only "scan" a small part of each machine, and the energy it took was considerable.
A week went by and there was some visible progress. There was a pathway from the door to a workbench and drafting table where one could actually see the concrete floor. On the drafting table and pinned above it were 11 x 17 inch drawings of what looked like a cross between an artichoke and a bullet (OCC, point of interest, please feel free to ask about this as well as Cheeky) as well as engineering schematics for a robot that looked very similar to Cheeky, who now boasted a metal plate with the name "Cheeky" engraved on it , on it's side. There were a few machines that were in the process of being cleaned and examined. Richard was in the process of opening the coverings to see if he could fix them.
It was then that Cheeky bumped into a foot by the door way. It backed up and tried again, 'Bump'. It proceeded to beep angrily and start to flash its lights. Richard looked up. "Hello?"

"You are far too eloquent for this world of coffee shops and a girl with terrible literary taste,"
"Come now, come now, I am not that eloquent at all, just honest and direct, sometimes a little too much so, and why on earth would you say that you have terrible literary taste? I for one would disagree. You simply enjoy different books that me, and I do happen to have 1 or 2 years head start on you." Said Richard smiling.
"I do admire the art of the novel as well. Or, as it may be, the science? I have always been particularly confused by the line between art and science. In any case, the way the author crafts the story, builds the plot; Code of the Woosters, for example, while somewhat lacking in the aforesaid captivating depth, makes up for it with the sheerly ridiculous plot line. Actually, it's rather difficult to keep up with. And also, configurations of words, like poetry. I love that as well."
"Ah the world of poetry, I must admit I have not delved very deeply into that world, although I should like to."
"Oh, thank you, I'm almost sixteen,"
"You are very welcome." Richard was warming very much to Margo. He had also started to think of her as a friend.
"Oh! is your birthday coming up soon then?" Richard laughed. "You are making me feel old. I remember when I was young and energetic" he joked. while miming a bent back and stroking an imaginary beard.
"And not really. Once you get me started on books, it's hard to stop. It's hardly so with most other topics. Take for instance, class. Bleh."
"I still think you are not giving yourself enough credit, one needs maturity to appreciate books does one not?" Richard said smiling. He stretched and rose.
"This is too lovely of a day to spend indoors, care to go for a walk? Do you know of any parks or so around here?" He asked. As they headed out of the coffee shop Richard spoke.
"So I know about your love of books but I don't actually know that much about you. Tell me about yourself. I'll start, um.." Richard composed his thoughts and continued while following Margo along the sunny streets of New York, the weather was good, the sun was shining and the air smelt crisp and clear, it was a beautiful day.
"Well, you know my name is Richard, you told me your age so it is only fair that I tell you mine, I am 26 which sounds really old but doesn't actually feel that much older than when I was 25, strangely enough." He smiled. "Um... just moved here from Colorado, looking for work as an engineer and probably a place to "bunk" as they say. Ummm... i think that about covers the basics, What else would you like to know? And how about you?"
It was good to walk, and make new friends, this was turning out to be a very pleasant day, a very pleasant day indeed.

"One must always be careful of books, and what is inside them, for words have the power to change us,"
"Wise words" Said Richard, nodding. "That is why one must judge and weigh every word, idea and concept before choosing to accept or discard it, and set a watch over ones mind and heart." He replied also smiling.
"You definitely have far better taste in books that I do."
Richard smiled at this, "I would not be so sure about that, each persons sees different things, from different angles, gets inspired by different aspects. You and I might read the same book or paragraph and each come away with different insights. That is why I like talking to people, from each person I talk to I can potentially learn new ways of seeing the world and gain new insights."
"Fiction, science fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, the works I guess. I'll read pretty much anything. Um, I guess I enjoy books that sweep me along in them, if you know what I mean."
"Books that captivate you, make you loose track of time." Richard smiled and nodded understandingly.
"Honestly, my ideas of a good book change all the time. I don't know. I used to read a lot of fantasy, survival stories, that sort of thing. Nowadays I linger in the YA section. I still don't like most classics, or alien stories, but you know, that might change with time."
"It is similar for me as well. As I experience more of life, what inspires or even recharges me changes."
"There are stories, for me, that are so raw and so beautiful in their...real ness that I can't put them down, stories that reflect the pain of our world- it's pretty strange, if you think about it, that most of those stories are based in fictional settings, but not really, I guess?"
"The stories that bring us to tears, that stir something deep inside of us, that tug at our heart strings are very captivating, I have started reading at night and looked up from the book to find it is morning many a time." He said as he smiled. "But the essence of those stories, the original inspiration for the authors were not fictional. Authors are inspired by their experiences and surroundings, so the source of their inspiration is based in real life. That is why we can identify with them and why they captivate us so. Sure the authors may change the setting, they may alter the circumstances to highlight that particular trait or personality but they are all inspired by something that happened in the real world. So I guess in a way it is not strange at all."
"I should probably stop...So, yeah."
"No please go on," Encouraged Richard. "I am enjoying this conversation very much."
"I hope you don't mind me saying this, but you seem very mature for your age."
Indeed Richard was surprised by the depth of insight, was she just unusually mature for her age? Or was that a result of life experience? Richard wondered if he would get the chance to find out. He had opened up to Margo somewhat unintentionally, and she had opened up in return. Unconsciously Richard had already started to consider Margo as a friend, or at the very least someone who had the potential to turn into a good friend indeed.
