The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Now that was more like it, Kealey thought as Shin snatched the bulbasaur away and got down to business. He was confident, and Kealey found herself humming as she watched him work. Soon bulbasaur was finished and handed over and Kealey went to work on the detail pieces. She sewed the bulb to the back of the body by hand, then went to work on the slightly more elaborate pieces of the face and eyes. Soon he was finished and they went to work on the Tuxedo Shin doll.
That went even more quickly than the bulbasaur ultimately had, and soon Shin was snipping the final threads on the little doll and handing it over. He asked what she thought, and Kealey couldn’t help but laugh with slightly unabashed delight, ”I think that I’ll have to be careful what all I teach you. Otherwise you’re going to make me look bad at what’s supposed to be my hidden talent.”
She stopped and shook her head slightly, grinning. ”You’re a quick learner. I think these look fantastic.”
She held the dolls out, one in each hand, ”What do you think?”

”Sure I can do it, watch though in case you ever need to do it.” the blond said, taking the bulbasaur pelt and going to work on the seams. It was a simple matter of using the tool to cut the thread then using one’s fingers to pull the extra little pieces out so they weren’t in the way the next time you tried to sew.
Shin was concentrating, Kealey looked up to find him staring at the sewing machine and grinned again, going back to work on the stitches already in the fabric. Not wanting to risk breaking his concentration, she didn’t say anything and simply finished her work.
Just as she was about to speak, Shin announced that he could do this. No, that he would do this. He asked for the bulbasaur, and Kealey handed it over.
”Sure you can. Shin…you can build things with your mind.” Kealey grinned encouragingly.

Hmmm. There was a little doubt creeping into Shin’s emotions. He was willing to try, though, and Kealey wasn’t going to get in his way. Shin could make triangle shard things with his mind that had taken practice and it had probably taken a few failures. Learning to sew on a sewing machine would be similar.
Shin sat down when she moved, and he sewed. Or something like that. Kealey had to hide her slight smile when he asked if there was a reset button. The bulbasaur had come out looking slightly less than bulbasaur’ish.
”No need to be embarrassed. You have no idea how long it took me to properly learn to work one of these things. And there is a reset button….” she said, leaning around him to pull open one of the drawers in her desk. It took a few moments for her to reach in and dig around and find what she was looking for, but when she did, Kealey brandished it with a grin.
”It’s called a seam ripper.” Kealey held the handle out towards Shin and nodded towards the bulbasaur, ”Just take the stitches out and try again.”

Kealey nodded to Shin’s clarification, and she could feel him mulling things over. Not that “mulling” was necessarily a feeling, more of a conglomeration of emotions that generally indicated it. Then he was verbally weighing, Kealey didn’t interrupt, just continued nodding her head at appropriate points. Yes, he did have that perfect measurement talent, and yes he was very quick with math. It would make things far easier on Kealey, who sometimes was scatterbrained enough to struggle.
It was decided and Kealey grinned, giving a final nod for good measure. ”That it is.” she agreed, then it was on to the sewing.
Shin was listening closely to the mechanics of the sewing machine as Kealey showed him the bobbin, the spool thread, the foot, the needle and how to thread the whole thing. It was very important, the threading, if done wrong the stitching would simply unravel once the sewing was finished.
Shin said it was all so confusing and Kealey looked up and over her shoulder to where he was hovering. Yup. He was confused. She smiled. ”That’s just me rambling about the mechanics. It’s really much more simple to run than it sounds. Here’s the foot pedal.” she pointed out, tapping it with her foot. She put the body pieces on the machine, ”You’ll want to make your seam about 1/8 of an inch from the edge of the material to make sure there’s no holes. Now…you just go…not too fast or you’ll end up with a mess, or so slow you eliminate the purpose of using the machine.” she said, applying gentle pressure to the pedal and watching as the needed whirred in and out of the fabric.
Down the side of the body she went, then around the back legs, then up the other side. The front would stay open for now, until the other pieces she’d made for the head and jaw could be finished. ”You always work inside out, that way when you flip everything, the messy part of the seams don’t show.”
Reaching the end of the second side, Kealey stopped the machine and glanced over her shoulder again, ”When you reach the end and you’re ready to snip the thread, you want to go back over your stitches the other direction. That’s similar to knotting if you were sewing by hand.” she looked back to the machine, did what she’d just explained, then cut the excess thread, holding up the half-finished bulbasaur body.
”See, simple! Do you want me to pin the pieces of the bulb together so you can try?”

”Ahhh…well, I suppose it would make sense for him to like mysteries.” Kealey said with the teasing glint still in her eye. Shin went on to talk about school a little and Kealey listened attentively as she finished pinning. Science and math…two things that made Kealey shudder. She’d never had the talent…or the attention span for either of those things. It was probably a good thing Shin liked math though…it would help him with his powers…and inevitably his costuming skills.
Kealey didn’t know why, but it came as a bit of a surprise that literature and history were troublesome for Shin. He did work in a book store. Reading something you wanted to read and reading something you had to read were two different things entirely, though. He said he might need help.
Kealey thought for a moment, staring off at the wall, before she looked back at Shin, ” Hmmm. Maybe we could work something out. Did you know that I spend an insane amount of time measuring things during the school year?” she said, ”If I had someone who could help me speed that process up, I’d probably have plenty of time to help with proofreading and book discussions. I’m useless for History though…” she admitted honestly.
Shin admitted with equal candor that he’d never sewn before, though he knew how to knit. Huh. That was interesting too. Kealey knew all the basic stitches, but knitting was another thing she’d never had talent…or attention span for. Sewing simply yielded much faster results. Was it difficult?
”Ummm sometimes it’s difficult. I’ll show you how it works on this one, then let you try on the next. “ the blond said, rising from the floor and gathering the pinned pieces and the pins. Then it was over to her desk and the sewing machine.
”First, I’ll tell you about all the parts.” This was going to be a bit of a crash course, Kealey couldn’t help but thing as she started going through the individual parts of the machine with Shin and explaining their purposes. They didn’t have time for sewing straight lines on paper though. They had an army to make.

Kealey felt the slight drop in Shin’s mood and her brows drew together in a small frown. That hadn’t been the intention at all. Then again, most people probably didn’t casually drop references to house fires in normal conversation. Shin seemed to realize this, though, and Kealey almost smiled at his conscious effort to swing his emotions. This was some of what was so great about Shin…he thought about what she was feeling, even if it was an echo from him.
Back to the bulbasaur Kealey went, working on getting the body pieces cut out and pinned together. Once that was finished they could move to the sewing machine. Kealey was just about to ask Shin if he’d ever used a sewing machine before when he offered to loan her some of the books that had been lost in the fire. She grinned and nodded her head, ”That would be great, Shin.” she said, sifting through their pile of scraps for pieces to make into bulbasaur’s spots.
He was reading Atlas Shrugged. Kealey had heard of it, and it was well known as a college reading list favorite. She hmmmm’d thoughtfully, then shrugged her shoulders, ”I haven’t read that one.” He said he didn’t love it yet and that it was probably more well suited for Aurum.
”Does that mean it’s philosophical and lawyerly, or grumpy and aging?” she said with a chuckle, mind going back to the birthday party they’d attended at Chuck E. Cheese.
Peeking over at the fabric Shin was working on, Kealey looked back towards her desk, the next question she‘d thought of coming back to mind, ”Have you ever used a sewing machine?”

Small details were exchanged about powers and Kealey didn’t add anything to the conversation. They both knew what she could do with her powers, and what they didn’t know, they didn’t need to know. They were both being vague though, about their powers, and Kealey tilted her head. Why?
Calley was embarrassed about something now, and the suspicion was running almost absolutely rampant. Shin, on the other hand, was cool. Slightly suspicious as well, but cool and confident. All the suspicion was making Kealey jumpy. It appeared that Calley was going to give her a demonstration, though.
Out he held his hand, and Kealey’s surprise was so great at what happened she was able to forget about how suspicious she was feeling. When Calley had said that he was a shifter, the blond had expected to watch him changing from a human into something. Not creating another being.
The cat moved forward and Calley pointed out that it was him as well. It took her a moment to realized that the voice had come from the cat. Woah.
It rubbed against her legs, and Kealey instinctively reached down to give it a scratch behind the ears. It was cool enough that she almost forgot to cast out for the emotions.
She tried….and felt only the same thing she had felt before. Kealey stared at the human body that was still sitting on the floor, ”So…both of these are you?” she asked, voice soft with slight wonder.
”How do you feel?” she asked, looking down at the cat, momentarily oblivious to everything else.

Calley was such an anomaly...he’d killed someone, Kealey was sure of it, but he had definitely been proud of his powers. Kealey watched him closely, her fascination elevating. Then Shin sat on the floor and the conversation changed.
Shin sure had a lot of questions for Calley, and that made Kealey incredibly nervous. They were innocent questions though, questions that anyone would ask when they were trying to get to know someone else. Kealey was sure she’d have asked similar things had this been a normal conversation.
The questions had changed the emotional climate though, and as Calley’s suspicion skyrocketed and dislike started to creep in, the blond swallowed hard. It was pivotal those emotions didn’t seep into her actions.
This wasn’t how this conversation had been supposed to go. Kealey didn’t know how she thought it was supposed to have gone…Calley had been the initiator, but this was wrong.
Kealey wracked her brain, trying to figure out what she could say to help the situation and coming up with absolutely nothing. She’d been sure that Calley had been about to demonstrate his powers…it sure would have been a distraction.
”Won’t you show us one? I’d really love to know whether or not I could feel emotions from someone like you.” she asked, putting on another bright smile. A bright desperate smile.

If possible, Aurum got grumpier. And more annoyed. That just wasn’t okay! Kealey frowned as Aurum frowned and the day threatened to get really gloomy really fast. Until Shin sat down on her other side.
He was still happy, and Kealey turned to grin at him as he spoke to Aurum. Sure it sounded like this was slightly less than their mutual friend had been hoping for…but it was one of those situations where you probably wanted to make lemonade. He even said he was old.
”You can’t be old.” Kealey said, ”Then if nothing else I’d be almost old and that’s just not okay.
Shin pointed out that Aurum was probably just sad because he hadn’t opened his presents yet. Oh! His present! As Shin suggested she give it to Aurum, Kealey jumped up from her seat, ”Where is it?” she exclaimed and ran off to find it.
It wasn’t by the front door, it wasn’t by any of the places they had been since coming into the party place. That left only one option. Kealey dove back into the ball pit.
Around she swam, dodging children and flying plastic balls for all she was worth. It was the only way. Finally, after a degree of moving around that tousled her already tousled hair to near ridicularity, her hand closed on a ribbon.
She’d only been gone from the table a few moments, and when Kealey bounded back with the present in hand she slipped right back into the seat she’d vacated, beaming with pride as she offered the package to Aurum.
By this point, the plain box was sticking out through rips in the colorful paper and the bow was outrageously skewed to one side.
Inside the brightly colored package was a messenger style bag. It was leather and it was distressed, it would be great for carrying files and notebooks and whatever else it was that lawyers carried around in New York City.
”I hope you like it…I thought it would be good for your lawyer stuff.” she said, a huge hopeful grin spread across her face.

Shin knew something was up….Kealey could feel his suspicion as he stood in the doorway of her room and cracked a joke about the skirts. She laughed, thank the Lord it wasn’t a loud guffaw or anything outrageously obvious. Then again, the statement had actually been funny. ”Not that you don’t have the legs for it, Shin, but I’m not sure the mini-skirt would accomplish any more for your costume than a body suit.” The smile was definitely more genuine now.
Calley went ahead and invited Shin in, even if his gigawat smile was as fake as a three dollar bill. Did she look like that? No wonder Shin had been suspicious. Kealey ignored the urge to roll her eyes and nodded her head, ”You know I love ideas.” she said, and again it was the God’s honest truth. The costumes were hard to work on…really hard, she turned to her desk and the top sketch caught her eye. Crap.
Truth be told, Kealey had hit an inspirationally dry spot and had started working on a costume design for herself. It was a little embarrassing to say the least, and she hoped he wouldn’t see it.
Calley clarified his powers and Keleay’s eyes widened slightly. ”Anything? Wow.” she whispered, possibilities running through her mind. ”That’s a very cool power Calley. I wonder if I could feel your emotions when you were an animal.”

Some day she would try this curry rice. Kealey nodded her head and smiled. Maybe it would be like the waffles. That had been an excellent, late night, experience. Waffles with peanut butter…who knew? Kealey’s horizons had broadened that night, and it had been wonderful.
She was embarrassed about not knowing her favorite food, but Shin said he understood. Kealey stopped cutting for a moment look at him as he explained. The more he spoke, the wider she grinned. He did understand what she was talking about. It was the first time anyone had even understood what she’d meant about the food, let alone empathized with her. Sure, the situation Shin was describing was slightly different, but the gist of the thing was the same. The blond nodded enthusiastically.
”Exactly. Or, I’ll eat something in a restaurant, then get it again later and hate it.” she said, laughing. ”Fascinating.
Shin seemed to approve of her final revelation about cheeseburgers and asked a follow up question. ”Hmmmm. Both ways, depending on the other toppings.” she answered non committally.
The book question was apparently a little more difficult and Kealey watched closely as Shin worked through indecision to try and answer her question about books. She grinned when he asked about the recommendations he’d made, ”Of course I do. That was the first time you made my day better. I was actually just thinking about it.” What she said was true. She'd been avoiding her apartment that day and had wandered aimlessly into the book store. Had it really been that long ago? Memories surfaced unbidden, some Kealey wished had stayed where they belonged.
She stopped talking and shook her head for a moment, ”Those poor books…the anthologies and such. I’d checked them all out from the library, you know? They were in my apartment when Roland burned it down.”
She screwed her face up in concentration as she thought, trying to remember, ”I know you got really excited about a couple books…maybe it was Foundation? Or something by L’engle. Am I close? I still need to finish those.”

The best thing about working with Shin, at least on this project, was that he was completely focused. If Kealey had been asked to guess she’d have said it was because of his plans to make his own tuxedo out of his shards. It didn’t matter though, she’d gotten over that a while ago. Attention to detail was good when making little dolls.
The pattern pieces for the body were cut out now and Kealey quickly pinned them to the scrap of fabric she’d picked out a few minutes earlier. Two pairs of scissors meant the work went twice as fast and soon Kealey had cut out the individual body pieces.
Shin answered her question about food with a long description of something that sounded slightly exotic but incredibly good. ”I haven’t….” she said, tilting her head and frowning slightly at the momentary shift. She almost asked, then decided to shrug it off when Shin did the same. ”I’ll have to try it some time.”
The question was flipped, then tossed back at her, and Kealey really had to think.
”I…don’t really know Shin….” she said, slightly embarrassed, ”Just like everything else, food makes people feel things, strong things. A lot of times the spillover makes me confused…”
Kealey thought for a moment as she went back to the scrap bag, pulling out the various sets of googley eyes she had in there. The cheeseburgers at that place Jacen had taken her too had been awesome…twice. Then there was the Italian food…and lots of other things. Kealey almost laughed, remembering just how much she’d eaten around him. The more she thought, the more her mind went back to the burgers. Then there’d been that cheeseburger place with Sam. Yup.
”Ummm, cheeseburgers.” she answered definitively. ”I know that sounds silly…but it’s true. I love cheeseburgers.”
Hmmm. What else. Kealey thought for a moment and her mind harkened back to the first time she’d met Shin, at the Full Circle. The Badger had waved her in and a case of mistaken identity had caused Kealey to respond to a cat’s name.

Juka was pleased with her compliment on his clothing. Happy Juka meant happy Kealey and she beamed right back. The melancholy was right below the surface though, and as soon as Juka’s emotions dulled in the slightest, the little rain cloud went back to work over Kealey’s head. The offeer for a ride still stood, though. Kealey summoned a smile for Juka, ”Thanks Juka. I’ll definitely take you up on it. Just…not today.”
He wanted to know what he could do to cheer her up and Kealey continued to smile at the sincerity in his voice. He really did want to help. ”It’s not really something that anyone can help with Juka. I’m just in a bit of a funk. I really do appreciate the offer though.” What she said was true, even if it probably wasn’t what Juka wanted to hear. Sometimes a person simply needed to brood. This was one of those times, the emotional impact of the last few days was still sinking in and Kealey needed to think it through.
Maybe, just maybe though, she’d made a new friend.

Bulbasaur was first. Kealey nodded to Shin as he continued to pull materials from the scrap bag. He settled on the floor and Kealey started gathering materials to do the same. The book and all the sewing things went with her and down she sat. Shin suggested that they had everything they needed to make the best bulbasaur ever and Kealey had to grin. ”I think you’re right.”
”Okay.” she said, holding up some of the pattern paper and a pencil, ”You don’t just cut the pieces out. First you have to cut out the different pattern pieces. Then we pin them to the fabric, cut out the pieces, then we sew.” she said.
Checking the picture for reference, Kealey quickly sketched out the pieces that would come together to make the bulb. Handing the sheet to Shin, she nodded to the scissors, ”Go ahead and cut those out, then pin them to the green fabric and cut them out.”
Back to sketching Kealey went, drawing out the pattern for what would ultimately be the body. There was a nice light blue that would serve the purpose well. It wasn’t the exact shade of a bulbasaur from the games, but they were working with scraps here.
It was quiet in the room while they worked, but it was a comfortable science, and the emotional climate was more relaxed for Kealey than it had been for days. She sighed happily and glanced at Shin, ”So, Shin. What‘s your favorite food?” she asked. Their conversations so often veered towards the serious…and lately they all seemed to be about Kealey. She was curious, and now seemed as good a time as any. As far as she could remember they’d never talked about food outside of waffles…and food was always a great subject.

Warm and fuzzy was so much better than nervous and cold. Kealey put up with a lot of negative emotions because of her powers, but on the flip side, she got to feel the good ones too. When people were laughing and playing and genuinely enjoying themselves Kealey did too, and if she was already having a good time, it was twice as nice. This was definitely one of those times.
Shin moved over to check out the scraps and extra fabric Kealey had in the bag and she pulled out a haphazardly cut piece of linen that she’d had left over from a school project. ”I know most tuxedos aren’t made of linen, but I think this would serve our purposes quite well.” she said, laying it to the side. More fabric followed for all the necessary components. Bulbasaur was next, and soon they had a nice little pile of fabric for each doll set aside.
”Hmmm, do you want to learn how to do the tuxedo right off the bat, or do you want to watch me make the bulbasuar then tackle the tux? Either way works…though we need a frame of reference for bulbasaur…”
Luckily…Kealey hadn’t returned Shin’s Pokemon books yet, and they were still stacked on her shelves. Over she skipped, then returned while flipping through the pages. ”Here we go.” she said, laying it down and tilting her head. ”He’s so cute! This was a great idea.”
That said, Kealey moved to her desk, pulling out pattern paper and her notebook, pins, thread, needles, and scissors. Hands on her hips, she looked from all the materials to Shin, ”What do we think?”
