The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The sewing machine whirred and the needle did its job, pulling thread through the fabric as the seam formed down the edge of the skirt Kealey was sewing. The skirt was part of a larger project, and if Kealey was right it was going to be one of those things that she absolutely adored owning, but never really had a chance to wear. She was accumulating a shocking number of such items, but when the ideas struck and she had the time…it simply had to be done.
The little calendar on her desk marked today as the 8th of July. Four days ago, a very important birthday had been celebrated all over New York. Today was a birthday too, but Kealey had learned that such things were unimportant a very long time ago. Nobody knew her birthday, and she honestly hadn’t thought about it…much.
The knock on her door made Kealey jump, she’d been paying such close attention to the sewing machine she hadn’t felt the approaching bundle of emotions. She looked for it now and grinned slightly when a voice filtered through her door, eliminating the need to guess at the identity of the knocker. Finishing the seam quickly and snipping the thread, Kealey draped the skirt over the back of her chair and opened the door just as Shin explained that he’d made her cupcakes.
Puzzlement mingled with the blonde’s excitement as she looked at the tray, milk, and cupcakes, and she tilted her head at Shin. He did nice things a lot, but Kealey’s mind jumped immediately to the un-significance of the day and wondered how he’d figured it out.
”How did you know? she asked, moving to the side, ”And of course you can come in…those smell delicious. You made them?”

He felt everything…two ways…but Kealey was only feeling it one. She nodded her head and complied with the cat’s request, scratching behind its left ear and wondering what it would be like to have a pet like this.
”I only feel it one way.” she decided triumphantly. ” Apparently a shifter’s shifted forms are immune to my powers.”
Shin spoke again and Kealey listened with interest, he seemed to be familiar with Calley, or someone a lot like him who could heal, who saved people and rode unicorns.
Blink, blink. Unicorns?
Kealey opened her mouth to comment on that one, but Calley interjected before she had a chance
Apparently he had a brother.
”Oh, you have a brother.” the blond said, still scratching behind ears that demanded to be scratched simply by virtue of their existence.

Meld expressed a desire for a world where people didn’t have to resort to violence in order to accomplish things. She didn’t believe it was possible though. Kealey could see some of the logic in that, it was unrealistic to think that people would ever completely stop being violent. They could agree on that. What Kealey had a feeling they were going to stick on was the proper way to respond to that violence.
Meld pointed out that there could be beauty along with darkness and Kealey looked at the other woman.
”Beauty in the darkness?” she said, brows drawing together as she attempted to wrap her mind around the concept Meld was trying to get across. It didn’t work, and she shook her head again, ”I fail to see how breaking up families, or ending a life, or bringing violence to anyone could be beautiful.”
”Violence only begets more violence.” Kealey said, ”It’s a vicious circle. Somebody, somewhere, has to be brave enough to break it. The most powerful and successful revolutions happened through peace on the winning side. Situations like that stand to cast a bright light on the other side committing wrongs.”
Meld pointed out that people who committed violent acts were not necessarily bad people and Kealey nodded her head, ”I know that.” she said, feeling slightly exasperated but going to great lengths to keep it out of her voice.
”It’s just…the whole super hero thing…” Kealey said, looking up at the sky as they closed in on the large building that was the Mansion.
”With great power comes great responsibility. Isn’t that right? Isn’t it our job to protect the people who can’t do what we can? To set an example? I know it doesn’t seem right or fair, but how else is anyone going to ever understand? Things you don’t understand are horribly frightening.”
Kealey thought for a moment, trying to come up with an example, she latched on to one, ”Like me…what I do is kind of scary, isn’t it? I had to learn to show people that they could trust me, even if I know the things they feel…even if they want to keep that secret more than anything. If I tried to force the recognition...I guarantee you I'd have been dead or locked up a long time ago.”
Hopefully that made sense. If not, she was going to struggle getting her message across.

Rooted to the spot. Too scared to move. Kealey couldn’t have described the feeling if she’d tried because at the same time she was so terrified, so panicked, she was probably more frustrated than she could remember being in recent history. It was so angering to be so helpless. At least, the blond supposed, she knew what her own feelings were underneath everything she was getting from the crowd. That seemed to be getting easier, even if the other emotions were still constantly there. Practice made perfect, but it didn’t help the situation here.
Shin moved into her line of sight and Kealey stared back at him as he put his hands on her shoulders, trying so hard to just focus on him like they’d practiced. The proximity helped, Shin told her to stay calm and he was concerned, and determined, and a little frightened, and then he was kissing her….
Well. That made it easier to concentrate on him.
For a moment, Kealey forgot everything else. She was blinking when he pulled away, trying to get her head sorted out when he pressed a cell phone into her hand and told her to call the police. The blond nodded her head as the other emotions started creeping back in and looked down at the phone, quickly dialing the Police.
The shards started to appear and Kealey just stared as they formed around her in a solid little box. There was only one question on the blonde’s mind, though. Why was Shin on the other side? Oh right, X-Man, honorary NYPD, this was what he did. Kealey was worried for him, though, but she trusted that he knew what he was doing.
The dispatcher answered and Kealey quickly rattled off the details Shin had instructed her to give, then ended the call despite the woman’s suggestion that she stay on the line. Shin was walking towards the gun fight, with his badge out, instructing them to put down their guns.
It was the first time Kealey had seen Shin act in any sort of official capacity, and she was impressed…until a bullet ricocheted off the shield he’d made himself. Someone had shot at him? That hadn’t just happened…but it had. Not okay. Not okay at all. If he hadn’t had that shield…before she’d been scared and confused. Now she was scared and angry. Two very different things.
Up Kealey went to her knees, settling back on her heels and staring at the group by the lake. Two broke off towards Shin and Kealey stared at them through the solid wall of shards. She could feel them now, all of them, all their emotions sealed into little pockets of individuality, the anger, the adrenaline. She used it, bringing their feelings into sharp focus, each and every one of them.
Then. In the blink of an eye, they were gone. It wasn’t something Kealey usually liked to do, but she knew what kind of effect it had on people. The two thugs running at Shin slowed, then stopped, simply standing in the grass with their arms at their sides.
The others, who were further away, slowed as well, guns lowering as they lost all motivation to use them. It was a lot, and it was hard work holding all of that down when it had been so violently strong a moment ago. Their adrenaline had helped, now without it, Kealey didn’t know how long she could hold on.
”Hurry!” she yelled, wincing slightly at the echo of the sound and wondering if it would carry at all. What she wanted Shin to hurry with, she had no clue…but it needed to be something.

“Mmhmm.” Kealey said in response to Meld’s inquiry about her powers. Then the suspicion. Kealey was ready though, she’d been expecting that, and it wasn’t something unique to Meld. Not by a long shot. Most people were uncomfortable about her powers when they had a chance to think about them. ”Don’t worry…I rarely ever comment on what I notice. I’m sorry if it makes you uncomfortable.” something else Kealey was used to, apologizing.
She tried to keep an open mind as Meld spoke, almost reverently, about a weapon, but the ideas the other woman spoke about were so foreign to the blond that she ended up simply shaking her head. ”But if people didn’t insist on having and using the weapons on each other…there would be no need. The reason you would hate something like that is because of the damage it does. The damage to a family, the damage to a community, the damage to the person who uses it. The costs far outweigh the benefits if you ask me.”
Meld wasn‘t envious, regardless of what she said, and Kealey actually chuckled a little at the other woman. ”You might think me naïve…but I know a lot more than you think.” she said softly.
”I’ve seen more than my share of the nasty things the world has to offer. I’ve seen people die in fire and shrapnel. People I cared about more than anything. I’ve watched men killed by other men, simply because they were weaker. I‘ve had acts of violence perpetrated on me simply because I tried to help and drew the attention of the wrong man.”
She paused, hoping she wasn’t waning overly dramatic here.
”I’ve simply chosen to try and make the world a better place. To see the beauty instead of the darkness.”
Kealey wasn’t in the business of changing peoples’ minds. Change was rarely effective that way. A person had to choose for themselves in order for anything to truly be accomplished.
”I did that because I’ve also seen people who were willing to stand up for the people who were weaker than they were. I’ve known people who really are willing to sacrifice everything to give us somewhere to live that is safe for everyone. Most of all, though, I did that because I know what happens to people who choose otherwise. I’ve seen it, and that’s something I’d never want to become.”
By the time she finished speaking, Kealey’s voice was soft, but it was intense and filled with conviction. This was the core of her being, the reason for everything she’d tried to accomplish in her adult life. Maybe, just maybe, Meld would be able to understand now.

So sad. Kealey frowned as she walked, wondering if the other women even knew how sad she was. There was a little bit of hope there too, though and Kealey resisted the urge to amp it up. Meld was so suspicious, Kealey didn’t want to do anything to hurt the tenuous pleasantry that had sprung up between them. The blond was naïve, but she wasn’t stupid and more and more she was getting the impression that Meld knew these things first hand.
The darker-haired woman agreed that violence did indeed change people, and Kealey nodded her head at the certainty in her voice and her emotions. There was something else that tickled at Kealey’s mind, a mild flash of…contempt when she’d pointed out that humans weren’t meant to hurt each other that way. She didn’t comment, and again she felt the desperate need to keep a hold on this acquaintance, to improve it.
Meld questioned how Kealey knew the way violence changed people, and it was the blonde’s turn to sharpen slightly. Who was Meld to question her convictions and knowledge? Kealey realized she was mirroring the other woman’s defensiveness and shook her head, taking a deep breath.
”I know because I can feel it.” she said, turning her head to look at Meld as they walked. ”It’s not an emotion so much as several together, but they’re still there.”
It was a difficult thing to explain to someone who didn’t know first hand, and Kealey struggled with her thoughts to organize them in a way that Meld would be able to understand.
”I don’t know long term…but I know how destructive the force is. I know what just thinking about those things does to a person’s psyche. I read somewhere once that the moment you stop hating a weapon is the moment you should get rid of it.”
Kealey shrugged as they walked, ”I don’t need to know first hand, because I see it and feel it all the time. People do bad things to each other…but it doesn’t help any of the parties involved.”
Kealey realized she’d been monologue a little and stopped talking with a shake of her head and a rueful chuckle, ”I’m sorry…I should be rambling. I also do know, first hand, what violence on a grand scale can do to a child. I hope I haven’t put you off…”

Skepticism flowed from Meld as she artfully dodged the subject Kealey had tried to bring up with the school, obviously preferring to keep her sentiments neutral. The blond found herself more curious than ever. She nodded her head, ”The world is such a beautiful place,” she agreed with a smile in the other woman’s direction, ”It would be a shame for her to grow up thinking otherwise. “
Kealey supposed her powers had made her into an eternal optimist, more than anything else. When you felt so much, and had to sift through so many things to sort out your feelings, sometimes it was just easier to take the happy road, no matter what you may have really thought.
She spoke of the horror of spilling blood, and Meld’s emotions…sharpened. Kealey struggled to find another word internally and failed. She’d hit a nerve, and suddenly the blond was uncomfortable. Violence was one of the nasty realities of life, even Shin had to resort to violence sometimes and he was one of, if not the best, people she knew. Calley had killed, but the situation hadn’t been cut and dry. There were all kinds of motivations, all kinds of reasons, but Kealey had also seen what those actions had done to the people she knew.
” Violence of any kind changes people Meld. Not for the better. Humans weren’t meant to harm each other that way…it hurts you here.” she said, placing a hand over her heart as they walked.
The other woman continued to speak, mentioning how at one time she’d lived in the Mansion, and how the people there were good, ”Some of the best.” she commiserated and continued with the small talk, ”Do you live in the city then? I have an apartment in Manhattan. I’ve been too busy working at the Mansion this summer to go there often…but it’s a cute little place.”

Kealey nodded her head and was relieved when Meld’s emotions calmed. The woman wasn’t quite as suspicious now, but Kealey was still a little shocked by how much time it had taken the other woman to decide she wasn’t a threat.
They spoke more on the child and Kealey hmmm’d as Meld said that it would be up to her whether or not she ended up enrolling at the Mansion. ”I hope she decides to…” Kealey said, ”So many end up out on the streets trying to find their own way. They get the wrong idea about the world, and the people in it.”
Meld voiced her desire to keep the girl, Kaitlyn, from hurting herself or anyone else by accident. ”It would be terrible for her to have an accident and have to bear that kind of burden. Nobody should have to walk around with blood on their hands. Unintentionally spilled or not.”
They walked more, and the school came into view, still a ways away, and Kealey nodded towards it.
”I didn’t go to school here…I don’t even really live her. But they do the right thing, showing the children that everyone has a place to belong. They see that nobody fits in all the time, and that it’s okay.”
Kealey was rambling and she stopped, ”I’m sorry…” she said, pausing to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, ”Some of the best things about me are coming out here. I’m a little biased.”

So suspicious. Kealey studied the woman more closely as she offered a hand and the blond took it. It had been a long time since something like physically manifesting mutations had surprised Kealey in any way and there was no hesitation in her actions. ”Nice to meet you again.” she replied, hoping the suspicion was simply from being in strange place and not the result of any actions she’d taken.
Meld explained that the little girl’s name was Kaitlyn and that her powers had a tendency to cause things to explode. Kealey’s heart immediately went out to the little girl and as she let herself and Meld through the gates she studied the woman thoughtfully.
”Are you thinking of getting her enrolled here? The mansion is equipped incredibly well to help young mutants learn to control their powers in an environment where misunderstandings are kept to a minimum.” It was the truth, the world was a big, scary place full of big, scary people. Powers like this Kaitlyn’s which could potentially be considered overtly dangerous had a tendency to cause a lot of misunderstandings.
”It would be such a shame for her to grow up thinking there was something wrong with her, or to accidentally hurt someone.”

The woman spoke, and Kealey’s eyes narrowed slightly on her face, trying to place it in a haze of memories from the past couple of years. She’d met so many people since coming to New York, hopefully this wasn’t someone who would remember her without Kealey having the same advantage. Such situations were at best, embarrassing, and at worst insulting to the other party involved.
The woman spoke, and Kealey’s face broke into a broad smile, despite the emotions that were starting to filter through from the other woman. ”I’m so relieved. I’m getting the same feeling from you as well. I just can’t place the memory though.”
She focused on the semi-stranger more intently as they stood by the gates, focusing her powers the way he and Shin had been working on. It still didn’t work, not at all, but the focus did help. It was the violence, the suspicion, and the poorly veiled mild contempt that jogged Kealey’s memory. There had been a coffee shop, and another empath….Kealey had shut everyone down and they’d left.
It wasn’t a great conversation, all things considered, and Kealey was much more fond of the idea that the other women wouldn’t remember exactly what had happened. Maybe this was a chance to make a second first impression. A rare opportunity indeed…and her intentions were pure.
”Well…if you need help for a Mutant, you’ve definitely come to the right place. I can’t tell you how much the people here have helped me.” she said, making her way towards the gates.
”I can let us in and take you to someone who can help. My name is Kealey, by the way.”

Long walks were something Kealey had taken a definite liking to. Sometimes she borrowed Thor from Shin so that she had some company, but most of the time she just liked to walk alone. The grounds of the Mansion were expansive, and there were times when she almost felt alone in her head. Even the more isolated location of the School was too urban for complete silence to be reality though, and Kealey was used to sudden interruptions of her thoughts while she walked. Today was no exception.
Her walk had been even longer than usual, and Kealey had found herself outside the boundaries of the Mansion’s property. It was interesting how that happened when one’s mind was occupied with other thoughts, and Kealey had just been making her way back towards the front gates when the most peculiar set of emotions beset her.
Whoever was feeling them was definitely conflicted, a bubbling cauldron of emotions, toiling and troubling its way through existence. Desire and regret, need and fear, determination and confusion, all mixed together. It was nearly enough to make the empath’s head spin a little. Whoever was feeling all of that definitely had a lot on their mind. Maybe they were a new student, or an old student who’d gotten themselves in some kind of trouble. Kealey’s mind drifted back to Calley and her brows drew together. It wasn’t exactly like that. There were violent feelings here, barely suppressed in fact, but they weren’t as out of control as the animal shifter’s had been.
Kealey wandered, searching for the source, and found it in the form of a vaguely familiar woman approaching the gates from the street. The woman walked up, and Kealey could feel the mild recognition from her end as well.
”Hello.” she said, head tilting slightly to the side in her signature indication of mild confusion. ”Can I help you with something?”

The night reminded Shin of someone or something named GARO and Kealey smiled, shaking her head in slight confusion. If she didn’t know about it now, she was sure she would later, as soon as Shin had a chance to properly explain. There had been a whole world out there Kealey was missing, and Shin seemed enthusiastic about it all. As a result, Kealey was becoming quite well-versed in the world of anime. She didn’t mind, some of the stories were so good.
The popping had distracted her from all of that, though, and Kealey still frowned in the direction the sounds had come from. Something was nagging at her under the surface, but she couldn’t pick it out from the jumble of emotions the crowd was already emanating.
Shin said it was probably nothing and the Empath nodded, letting her head drop onto his shoulder when he gave her a one-armed hug. The problem was, he was worried. Worried and confused. Kealey resisted the urge to squirm a little, and tried to keep her eyes forward and on the play. Shin didn’t worry needlessly, and the nagging feeling from before was slowly working its way down to settle in the pit of Kealey‘s stomach.
The little Knight dropped to one knee, ready propose to the Princess. The crowd awwwww’d appropriately, and Kealey blinked, hand going to her stomach as the combined feelings started to kick each other around. Why was she so nervous all of a sudden? So…
”Shin….” she said, ”I’m scared….” That was what the nagging feeling had been. Fear. It had been a whisper at first, just enough to pull her attention in that direction. It was stronger now, very strong, and Kealey turned just in time to hear the second burst of gunfire go off and watch a man fall to the ground.
As much progress as Kealey had made with her powers, panicked crowds still gave her a bit of trouble. While others were scrambling to their feet and getting as far away from the approaching groups as possible, Kealey stayed exactly where she was, rooted by fear.
So many people were scared, the crowd as they ran, the children as they huddled behind the stage, the man who had been shot, the boy who had shot him. They were angry, too though, furious in fact and Kealey’s own emotions added to the fire.
The groups reached the edge of the lake, and Kealey continued to stare as they faced off, ready to fight. Where had they gotten so many guns? The blond was shaking, terrified as she watched the scene unfold, and completely unaware of anything else happening around or to her.

Shin said that he thought everything was fine. Kealey nodded her head, he was mildly amused, and she was a little confused. Shin pointed out the stage and Kealey ’ohhh’d’ in understand just a little bit sheepishly. She was a bit prone to paranoia in crowds, though, so she didn’t dwell on it for too long. After all, if someone really had been hurting that poor creature, she’d have been ready to leap to its defense.
Shin suggested that maybe there’d be a knight and Kealey couldn’t help but laugh a little, ”Maybe if there is, you can get some ideas for the joints in your shard armor. I’m not sure traditional seams are going to work….”
Kealey moved with Shin as he grabbed her hand and he searched for the best place for them to sit. The blond had never seen a play in a park before and the children really did look like they were having a good time. Down she sank onto the ground next to Shin, leaning slightly against his side and already absorbed in what was happening on stage.
The dragon who had been on the stage suddenly leaped back to its feet and Kealey found herself giggling with the shared delight of the mob of children as they feigned terror and huddled on the far side of the stage.
The dragon really was quite good.
Out came a knight and Kealey grinned, the child, while seemingly older than the others was still young enough to be nearly bursting with confidence at his role. He waved his sword and declared his intentions towards the hapless reptile. As sorry as Kealey felt for the dragon, she clapped for the young Sir Knight.
The boy’s vorpal blade went snicker-snack, and while he was denied the pleasure of galumphing back with a head to proudly display, the dragon stumbled off stage.
The scene change ensued and Kealey turned her head to smile at Shin, ”This is lovely. Do they do things like this often in the park?” She didn’t know if Shin would know the answer, but it was still a question worth posing. A series of pops rang out in the park and Kealey was among the people who turned their heads to look for the source. Nothing stood out. Kealey focused her powers in that direction but didn’t find anything incredibly out of the ordinary when there were large crowds around.
”Huh.” Kealey stated, ”That was odd.”
The scene had changed now, and a young princess completely decked out in princess gear was flouncing around stage and trying to pretend like she wanted to ignore the young Knight as he tried desperately to impress her. Kealey awww’d and went back to watching, trying to ignore the nagging feeling of unease that was stuck in the back of her mind.

Central Park, as it turned out, was a great place for a date. The past couple of weeks had been filled with training sessions in the Danger Room, lessons in fashion, and other things various and sundry, dates included.
Dates with Shin had turned out to be a whole lot like hanging out with Shin before. They ate, they watched TV or movies, they talked about all manner of interesting and sometimes random thing. Kealey was pretty sure that level of comfort was the best part...well maybe not the best, but one of the great parts anyway. Not a whole lot had changed…except for the better. No awkwardness, just…more. They’d hung out before, they hung out now. Today, they were in Central Park. The day had been warm, the sun had been shining, and it simply seemed like the thing to do.
Lunch had been discussed, but ruled against, so they walked down the shaded paths, people watching and looking for an ice cream vendor that Kealey had heard rumor of existing. Ice Cream was great, and on a sunny day like this one it would be perfect. She had dressed for the occasion in a simple pink sundress with matching flip-flops and white sunglasses. The summer weather approved of the decision.
There were a lot of people, but not too many as to make it completely uncomfortable for her to walk among them. The park was huge, and everyone was relatively spread out…except for the gathering down by the water.
It looked like a play, until Kealey saw a small mob of what appeared to be children with swords attack a figure in a green costume. It fell to the ground. Kealey frowned slightly, trying to hone in on the emotions of that figure and see if they were okay. She tried, but failed.
”Do you think everything is okay? Maybe we should check it out to be sure…” she asked, looking to Shin to see what he thought.
