The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

”Thanks! I really owe you one!” Kealey shouted as she and the bribed student parted ways, him to park his car and her to get to Shin’s room as fast as humanly possible. From the garage she ran, not wasting any time on slowing down when she entered the mansion. Just let anyone say something to her about running. This was important business and no it couldn’t wait. It had waited long enough.
It was afternoon now, and Kealey honestly wondered if her driver thought she was utterly insane. It hadn’t been her fault…the drive back really had seemed twice as long as the ride out. The blond knew her way through the mansion, but that too seemed like it was taking twice as long as it should. What if Shin had changed his mind?
No use worrying now. It was too late to go back and change what had happened in the cab. Things had been said, and now the air needed to be cleared.
Around the corner, down the hall, turn here, turn there, up the stairs, another corner, one more turn…
Kealey skidded to a stop in front of Shin’s door, slightly gulping air from the way she’d ran. In hindsight that might have been a little excessive…but still.
BANG BANG BANG
Oh…she’d banged on the door. That was fine, so were all the other auxiliary emotions butting in on her from the people in the Mansion…best to do this quickly so she didn’t forget what she had been going to say.
…what had she been going to say?
Kealey panicked slightly, the carefully chosen words flying from her head like so many birds off of a shaken power line. She knew what message she needed to get across, though, and she’d already knocked.
”Here goes nothing…” she whispered, then rose her fist to knock again.

Kicking her shoes off, Kealey dangled her feet into the chilly water and stared out at its glossy surface. If there had ever been a person who’d been there for her without reservation, it was Shin. He’d drank with her, and he’d saved her life...twice. They’d watched TV together, they’d worked on things for the pokemon tournament together, they’d eaten waffles together at 2 am, he'd been her constant companion through the stalker situation with her sister, he'd worked with her to make a plushie army, and he'd held her in the middle of the night when she'd banged on his door in a sobbing heap. He'd been the one constant good thing, and Kealey couldn't think of anyone she'd rather spend time with, in or out of the Mansion.
Her powers didn’t bother him, and he hadn’t even judged her very harshly when she’d used them on him without permission. He got her, which seemed strange in someone who hadn't ever experienced what it was she went through. The thought reminded Kealey of something else he’d said, that she was worth the wait. It had to be horrible for him, not knowing what she was going to come back and say. The sheer terror, the doubt and uncertainty he'd felt in the cab when she'd been working through the confession he'd made...Kealey winced and looked through the clear water. Those were things she never wanted to be the cause of again.
No, she thought, going back to tracing the small circles in the water with her toes, She'd much rather be the cause of the other emotions. The ones that had nearly made her take back the necessity to think. The ones that had made her feel warm from her head to her toes, even if it had been for such a short time before she'd cast the shadow of doubt. Shin had worried about the way he'd told her, confessed that he'd imagined doing it more eloquently. Kealey thought back on the moment and sighed, it had been perfect timing.
The warm fuzzies in her belly and the bright blush on her cheeks were definitely Kealey’s own, and broad smile spread across her face as she reached up a hand to feel he heat radiating from her cheek. It seemed so silly now, questioning her instincts in this. Shin had said he would wiat though...he thought she was worth it. Kealey pulled her feet from the water and wrapped her arms around her knees while they dried in the sun...the sun which was right over head. When had it gone from morning to early afternoon?
Grabbing her shoes and slipping her feet into them, the blond slid down from her rock and started up the path she'd taken to get down to the beach. She wanted to get home to the mansion. Hopefully Shin would be there, it didn't matter though. Kealey knew where he lived and she'd wait outside the door if she had to. A bright smile crossed her features as she walked. Coming here had been a great idea, and as she made her way back to the car that would take her back Kealey went to work on what she would say. It needed to be good.
Alone. Kealey took a deep breath of fresh air and looked out over the lake. It really was beautiful…and secluded. She’d commented once that it was almost like being around Jacen. The rock she was sitting on was still cold in the slight chill of the morning air and it helped her clear her thoughts. There was definitely something to be said for being somewhere this far out. Quiet moments like this were precious few for Kealey, especially since she’d started staying at the mansion, and for a while she simply reveled in the silence and beauty of the Park. Her last trip here hadn’t ended as pleasantly as it could have, but Kealey still kind of treasured the memory. For a while, she’d considered trying to find the little pool Jacen had taken her to that day, but had decided that it was a far better idea to simply leave that memory in its special little place in the past. The lake shore would be a good place to think.
It wasn’t Jacen that she had missed so much, Kealey mused. That revelation, the distinction, was difficult to have. Everything about him had been so…overwhelming. It had let her be someone else, maybe herself…that was what she had missed. She wasn’t bitter, that wouldn’t have made any sense. Jacen had been a good man, he wouldn’t have left as he had if there would have been another option. Kealey had definitely moved on, though. And she was more than comfortable with her decision. The only problem was that it meant she had to figure things out on her own, with the obstacle of her powers. For what seemed like the millionth time Kealey wondered about that. Could she sort out what she felt from others around her? That was why she was here, with nobody close enough to interfere, she'd have to work things out for herself. She'd have to be sure. Which is what she wanted, and what Shin deserved.
Even though he had mentioned a few specific instances in the cab, it was still difficult for Kealey to pinpoint when Shin's feelings had changed. It might have been the night after the incident on the Ferry. There had been something strange in him that night, maybe it had stuck around and she'd grown used to it?
Yes, Kealey thought. The puzzle pieces had been there, she just wished she'd seen how they needed put together sooner. Before Shin had confessed his feelings in the cab. Maybe then she'd have known the right thing to say. Maybe then she'd have been able to give him something better than "maybe".
Hopping down from the rock, Kealey made her way down to the shore of the lake to found another rocky perch to stretch out on while she continued to think. "Maybe" was a terrible answer. It had been at the time. Shin had been so earnest in what he'd said, she hadn't been fair to make him wait. Somehow, though, she knew it would have been worse if she'd have answered positively without knowing if it was really what she felt.
Kealey cared too much about Shin to take the situation any less seriously. That’s why she’d come here this morning, bribing one of the older mansion students to drive her at what he’d called the “butt crack of dawn.”
The cool air and secluded woods would give her a chance to think, to figure out how she felt.

He calmed down. She told him that she needed to be sure and he calmed down. But that moment of emotion before she’d thrown in the need for surety. It almost made Kealey want to take back what she'd said about needing time... Woah…and the sudden stop. The oh so sudden stop. Had she ruined everything? Kealey watched, both literally and emotionally as Shin stared at her wide-eyed.
He spoke and the relief flooded through her swift and sweetly. How had she ever doubted?
Shin continued to speak and Kealey nodded her head. He’d wanted to be more eloquent? These feelings had been there for quite some time? Kealey tried to think of it, to place it, but that happy friendly glowy overall feeling she got from Shin was simply…him. Apparently it was more though.
He didn’t want to hide it anymore…he cared about her. It was all a little overwhelming, and when Shin smiled at her and said she was worth the wait all Kealey could do was smile. Inside, though, she was a ball of nerves.
I hope so… she mentally whispered. And she really, really did.
Comparatively, the rest of the cab ride was uneventful, it had been an exhausting day and Kealey was admittedly starting to feel a little overwhelmed by the events that had transpired. She needed to rest her eyes, if she kept talking she was going to end up losing the carefully constructed calm that had prevailed through most of the day’s events.
Eyes closed led to dozing, and when the cab stopped at the gates to the mansion Kealey jerked awake, sure she’d just shut her eyes a few moments before.
”I dozed off….” she said, turning to look at Shin apologetically, ”I’m sorry…”
The walk from the gates to the entry way of the school was as silent as the rest of the cab drive had been. Then…they were inside. Kealey wanted to think…she needed to think about everything that had happened. Needed to sort out all the thoughts and feelings that were rolling around in her head. Sooner better than later.
”So…I think I’m going to go now. I really need to think.” she said, looking earnestly at Shin. ”Thank you again…for coming to get me in the library…and for being so understanding.”
Out she reached, hugging Shin tightly, cheeks burning slightly as she stepped back. Then she turned and went up the stairs towards her room. It wouldn’t be completely quiet there…but maybe she could figure out someplace that was….

It got worse. Oh man, it got way worse, and it happened so fast.
Shin spoke, and Kealey didn’t even have time to react before the apparent impact of what he said set in. Then, two different things happened to the blond.
First, she realized that Shin was absolutely terrified by the fact that he’d said what he’d said. Second, she realized exactly what it was that he had said.
Oh man, what a day.
”Shin…Shin, you need to calm down.” Kealey said, swallowing hard and trying to think beyond the mild panic reaction going off in Shin.
”It’s fine. It’s, okay, it’s really…really okay.”
Hold on a second. Was everything okay? What was she supposed to say? Some things made more sense now, but others made far less. Why was he so terrified?
”I think…I think I…” feel the same way.
Kealey paused for a moment, mouth working to form the words. Did she though? Another moment’s thought. Yes, she really thought she did. Was that her though, or was she echoing the feelings that Shin was confessing, even if she hadn’t known what they were?
Did she owe it to him to be sure? After everything, absolutely. Now she was the one who was terrified. What if this came out wrong and she ruined everything? No. This was Shin. He would understand, he had to understand.
”Shin. I think I feel the same way.” she said, eyes and face pleading for him to understand.
”It’s just…with all of…this….” she said, reaching up to tap the side of her head. ”I have to be sure. Do you understand?”

Sometimes, Kealey wished that her powers had an off switch for just a moment. Somehow, she thought that this process would be easier if she wasn’t feeling every bit as nervous as Shin suddenly was.
Why was he nervous anyway?
He started to speak…then paused. Then started speaking again…then paused.
Did she remember when he’d said he’d protect her, ”Of course I remember.” she said, brows drawing together slightly in confusion, ”And since then…you’ve always been there.”

Why was she blushing? No, really…why was she blushing? Kealey’s cheeks had been burning for several moments before she realized that Shin was embarrassed. He was looking at the phone…and he was embarrassed.
Did that mean…
>>”Nope“
Apparently not…but then why was he embarrassed…and so curious?
>>”Why? Is there something wrong, if I did?”
Well. Maybe…
Kealey was confused. Confused and tired, and Shin wasn’t quite so calm and collected anymore. Was this the slightly loaded question it seemed like, and if it wasn’t, why was her mind taking her in that direction?
She shook her head.
”No. No, there isn‘t.” she said, pulling the mobile device back and looking at it in her lap for a moment before locking the keyboard and putting it back in her pocket. Kealey’s head leaned back against the seat, chancing a sideways glance at her traveling companion. ”I was just curious.”
She was still curious. Incredibly curious, but from Shin’s closed eyes and the emotions flowing from him, she figured more questions were a bad idea. Kealey frowned slightly. What did it all mean? She shrugged her shoulders slightly.
”It’s just that if you had…I’d have wondered what that meant.” Whoops.

So many emotions. There were lots of people in the room, though, and Kealey was honestly a little surprised that she was holding together so well. Then again, Shin was so calm and collected about the whole thing, it was hard not to be. Calm, collected, hopeful, relieved. All emotions that people in a crisis look for in others, Kealey was simply lucky enough to be able to borrow them in a more literal sense than most. And lucky enough to have someone there who seemed so able to provide them.
Her own relief surged as he said they could leave, and as they made their way from the building Kealey wondered what would happen next. Obviously there would be jail time of some sort for her sister. You couldn’t burn things like that and not be punished. Jails had visiting hours, though. Maire had been right about one thing. Nobody would forget her again.
Shin called for a cab, and again, Kealey was relieved as they climbed inside. Public transport just might have been too much for her to deal with at this point. She was worn out. This would be faster too. She’d have to offer to split the…
Something in her pocket vibrated and let out a trilling little beep and Kealey was just tired enough to be confused for a moment before realizing it was her phone. Text message notification.
It didn’t take long to find the message, a response to the one she’d sent Shin to let him know she was in the library. It was a short little message, but it kind of said a lot.
Blond head tilted to the side, Kealey turned to look at Shin next to her in the cab. ”Uh, Shin?” she said, curiously, holding the phone out for him to see, ”Was this to me?”

For a while, Kealey simply stared at the woman behind the wall of shards. Was it wrong that despite everything that had happened, everything the woman had done, Kealey was happy to see her? It was something she’d have to think about later. Her own feelings were still something she struggled with occasionally, and this was going to be one of those times.
The sprinklers had come on, and it had been hard for Kealey, watching the fire doused and feeling the hopeless helplessness from Maire as she cried in the cube. How long had she harbored the feelings? How long had she been watching Kealey? More questions that would have to wait for answers. In the grand scheme of things, there was only one that was really important. She and Shin were okay.
It had seemed like there was so much fire, so much smoke, and when the flames had been put out the damage to the library had been impressive. The smoke had made Kealey’s throat a little raw, and her face was smudged with a little soot, but she was unharmed.
Shin’s arm tightened around her shoulders and Kealey leaned into him more, watching as the police officer approached her sister with the handcuffs. All the fight had gone out of her. Kealey wondered why she felt guilty.
Shin spoke, and Kealey nodded her head, wondering how he always seemed to know exactly what to say.
”I hope so. She was so angry Shin…but underneath…” Kealey stopped talking and sighed, shaking her head.
”That could have been me…” she added softly, wondering what life would have been like, feeling so much anger and bitterness. She had grown up lucky, she was still lucky. Kealey turned slightly and hugged Shin again, ”Thank you again…so much.” she said before releasing him and stepping back to watch the small procession that had started.
The police led the redhead from the room, and she kept her head down as she walked, not even sparing a glance in Kealey’s direction. Why did that hurt?
The firemen were still poking around in the rubble, looking for hot spots, but it seemed like the police had finished their part.
”Can we go home?” the blond asked, the emotions of the day catching up.

The pain…the hurt….it had all been there for so long, was so central to her being that Kealey was momentarily staggered by the power. It hurt and it had hurt for so long. How did she deal with it all?
A deep breath and those emotions were also pushed down, leaving Maire in what had to be a state of staggered numbness, but the fire raged on. It seemed as though her powers were both something she fueled with her rage and held in check through sheer power of will. All of those things were absent now and she flared brilliantly.
Whoops.
Thicker and thicker the smoke came, hotter and hotter the flames flared. There had to be another exit somewhere in the library, but Kealey didn’t have a clue where it was. The alarm blared, the flames roared, the smoke billowed, and the drill hummed as it tore through wall board.
Wait…the drill?
Kealey could hear the sound, and she held the emotions of her long lost sister in firm check as the sound intensified, followed by a rush of emotion. Worry and fear were present, in equal parts intensity, but determination was forefront. Kealey nearly lost her resolve at the feelings, but pulled herself together. If Shin could battle through unknown flame and fire to get to her, she could hold it together, just a little while longer. She heard her name through the fire and smoke and somehow knew everything was going to be alright.
The smoke seemed to clear after a moment, and Shin emerged from around the side of a bookcase. Kealey coughed and hoped he’d take that for an exclamation of glee at his emergence. He did…something, and suddenly shards were arranging themselves around Maire’s prone form, effectively boxing her in.
Shin moved forward, and Kealey fell against him, arms miming his as they wrapped around her. ”You came for me…” she wheezed slightly.
Urgency was ahead of the pack as far as emotions went now, and he said they needed to go. The blond nodded her head…yes, out of here would be good. Explanations and more thorough thanks could come later.
Kealey’s head spun slightly as she turned back towards the cube and the figure inside as they moved away. The fire inside was dying and finally Kealey let go of the hold she’d had on Maire’s emotions. As they flowed from her, Kealey sagged slightly against Shin. She’d never tried that hard before….
”She’s…she’s my sister…” Kealey said the words feeling almost foreign in her mouth. ” Make sure she’s safe for when the police come to get her…”

This was some kind of sick joke. Some sick…sick joke that someone was playing on her. Kealey knew, had known for years, that her sister was dead. There was no way to bring people back from the dead, no matter how badly you wanted to, and that’s why Kealey was having such a hard time comprehending what was going on right in front of her. There was no way…it simply wasn’t possible…her sister…alive.
”Why!?” Kealey exclaimed, voice raised over the roaring of the fire. How was there so much, but so little around the two of them?
”It was so easy t’forget about me. For y’to move on.”
”It was so easy for everyone t’believe that we’d all died. And even easier for them to discount the pathetic creature that showed up weeks later, trying to claim what was hers.” she stopped and looked around them, at the flames licking up the walls and devouring the books.
”It was a miracle, what happened that day, the fire was so hot…it burned so badly…but then, I was free. Only, I couldn’t get back…not right away. By the time I could, it was too late.”
The story…it rang true to Kealey, the conviction and bitterness in her sister’s emotions were far too strong for it to be anything else.
”I waited so long, tried so hard t’find you Kealey. Find you with your perfect, fancy life here in America with your mutant friends,” the fire burned hotter, closing in more, and Kealey coughed at as the smoke thickened. ”I’ve found you now, though and…”
A voice cut through the flames, through the angry red head’s voice, and straight through to Kealey.
Shin. The text message.
Kealey opened her mouth, frantic to tell him to leave, to not risk it. He was absolutely frantic with worry and need and she nearly reached out to push the feelings away. She stopped though. She’d made a promise after Roland…
”Shin!” she called back, words interspersed with coughs, ”Help! Back here!”
Time…she desperately needed more time. She went back to the emotions in her sister’s head. The elements of shock and surprise had done a lot to numb Kealey before, but now she was concerned for Shin as well it all seemed so crystal clear…but it was getting so hot…and the smoke was so thick.
Down went the bitterness, away went the anger and resentment. Jealousy evaporated and in it’s place welled pain and sorrow. The redhead wailed, and battered against Kealey’s powers, rage and frustration trying to take hold. The emotions were so intense…so built up…Kealey shook her head, there would be time to think on it later. As her sister curled in on herself, flames still engulfing her figure, Kealey looked around the library.
The fire wasn’t getting any hotter now ,it was behaving like normal fire, but the flames were large and the smoke was thickening. Kealey dropped to a crouch, pulling air in almost desperately. She’d bought time…Shin would have to do the rest.

Aurum took the present and Kealey tilted her head at the little flare of pain that surged through his leg. Had he gotten a cramp? That was interesting. She quickly forgot, though, and went back to giddy anticipation over how Aurum would react to the present.
There were a few tense moments when Aurum opened the present, and Kealey’s face fell slightly as she realized that he wasn’t sure he liked it. That was disappointing, she had seen all kinds of lawyers with similar things, they needed stuff to carry their papers and folders and other lawyerly things. It defied logic that Aurum wouldn’t like the present, she was just about to open her mouth and point out that very important fact when Aurum’s sister planted herself at the table an explained to her brother that he had not been given a purse.
Oh. He thought she’d given him a….
Kealey rolled her eyes in the most exaggerated way possible, every bit as exasperated with Ami’s brother as she was. Probably more from the overspill. She shook her head, ”I can’t believe you thought I’d give you a purse.” she said, grinning at the younger girl in thanks for the compliment on her fashion sense.
It seemed now that he understood what he’d been given, Aurum was happy with the messenger bag. Kealey nodded, satisfied. It was a very manly messenger bag and it would serve him well. He’d be the envy of all the other little lawyers out there.
The time for her present was over though. Shin passed on his and Aurum opened it. She pouted ever so slightly, at least he’d known what Shin gave him…
The watch was very cool though, and Kealey couldn’t help but bounce in her seat a little as she watched Aurum examine the item.
Next came a present from Ghost and Sebastian, and Kealey found herself outrageously curious to find out what was in the envelope. It must have been something good because Aurum’s mood from a few minutes ago had lightened considerably. That was good. His grumps had been contagious and rubbing off on Kealey. Now she smiled again.
Ami announced that presents were now over and Kealey looked at her empty pizza plate. When had she eaten all of that? Oh well, it didn’t matter, all of this was so exciting.
Aurum thanked everyone for being there, and Kealey nodded in sympathy about his apprentice being frustrating. School was frustrating enough as it was, she could only imagine having to work with someone as an apprentice. Lawyer’ing was difficult enough on its own.
”You’re welcome, Aurum. Happy Birthday to you.”
Kealey bounced some more in her seat as she waited for everyone to finish their pizza. Shin commented on how crazy Americans were with their fruit on pizza and Kealey stared at the slide. Had there been pineapple on the pizza she ate? Wow, the blond really needed to pay more attention when she was excited.
”Crazy brilliant. We didn’t have places like these where I grew up.”
Sounds and lights and smells and feelings. So much going on at once. It was all such beautiful chaos. A perfect setting for a birthday.

The library was all but deserted, and Kealey was slightly shocked to find that even the librarian had abandoned her post. Granted, this library was small even in comparison to the one at the Mansion, a mere broom closet compared to the NYC Public system, but still…
The blond sighed and made her way across the room to drop her books off in the proper receptacle, hoping that nobody would get impatient and take one before it had been properly checked in. She checked her watch again and clicked her tongue against her teeth, she really was getting late now. Out came the cell phone and Kealey shot a quick text off to Shin, apologizing for taking so long and letting him know that she was in the library and would be along shortly. There was a book on versatile clothing designs for gymnasts and ice skaters that she was hoping to find after looking it up in the online catalogue. While most of the X-Men had no desire to look like a performer, the suits lent themselves to the types of materials commonly seen in such designs.
Kealey had just found the proper section and was skimming the Dewey Decimals when a piercing buzz cut through the quiet air of the room. After the initial shock of the sound, Kealey stood and turned, eyes locked on a brightly blinking red light suspended from the ceiling of the library. It was the fire alarm.
Instant alarm all of Kealey’s own rushed through her at the sound and while she told herself that it simply had to be a drill, the smell of smoke made its way into her nose and she knew…
”Hallo there.” called the voice, and there was something familiar in the musical lilt of the accent. Kealey whipped around and found herself face to face with a figure engulfed in flames, no seemingly made of flames. Back she scrambled with a little yell, until her back came up against the shelf of books she’d been looking at moments before.
”Y’don’t remember me, do ya?” came the voice again, and as Kealey squinted into the light it dimmed somewhat, revealing a woman. A redheaded woman who looked anything but happy. For the first time since the alarm had started blaring, Kealey cast out for emotions and the hurt, anger, frustration, jealousy, and elation were so strong it was almost overwhelming.
” S’alright. Everyone else forgot about me too. But they all remembered you…sister.”
Kealey stood, rooted to the spot, eyes locked on the figure in the flames, almost oblivious to the fire slowly starting to spread around the FIT library and the fire alarm that was still blaring in the background. That voice. That face too…older, but still the same.
”Maire?” Kealey breathed, coughing slightly on the smoke that was starting to build in the room.
The red-head smiled, but it wasn’t a kind smile of recognition. It was something all together different, ”Yes, sister. And this time, nobody’s goin’t’forget me.”

Odd. He felt odd. His brain was actually a cat’s brain, and he was feeling things the way the cat would feel them. Only then he was translating those things into English and speaking through the cat’s mouth. Kealey was fascinated.
She continued to scratch the cat lightly with her fingers as it twined and moved around her legs. Calley asked what she felt, and Kealey cast out, really looking for feelings in the room. What she found was the same as it had been before the shape-shift, that and something else…jealousy? Not from the cat though, or the suddenly quiet boy.
Kealey looked up at Shin, yup, he was the source. Well, the cat was just paying attention to her, which was ultimately a good thing considering the circumstances, still…
She grinned at the trianglemancer, ”I don’t feel anything from the cat part.” she said, then nodded in the direction of the boy, ”And he feels exactly the same as he did before. It’s so strange. Can you make both parts feel different things, or is all of that split up like your voice?”
She grinned at Shin again, still petting the Calley-cat, ”He’s just like a normal cat!” she said.

“Summer Seminar” the words had been bold and blue in the subject line of the email Kealey had gotten from school. It had been soon, and the person running the seminar had been prolific. Kealey had really wanted to participate.
Shin, of course, had encouraged the idea and insisted that he accompany her there, especially since the plushie army couldn‘t. They hadn’t heard or seen anything about strange fires over the past few day…since Mood really, but despite her protests that school was the safest place she could be, Shin was unmovable on the subject.
Kealey didn’t mind the company, not at all, but she felt bad that he’d had to wait outside every day while the class had drug on. And how it had drug… It turned out that with fame came an ego the size of your bank account. The speaker had mostly spoken of his many accomplishments, awards, celebrity clientele, and clothing lines. The empath could feel the arrogance and self-importance rolling off the man and she’d found herself wanting to join in his lecture a couple of times with tales of her work for the X-Men.
At least it was the last day. Friday. Then she was free for the weekend and the rest of the summer. These seminars weren’t going to give her what she wanted. That’s what her classes were for, and they didn’t start up again until August.
Suddenly, people were clapping, and Kealey’s head snapped up from where she’d been drawing little swirls and squares on her notebook margins. The seminar was done and people were making their way up to the podium to rain praises on the man who’d just finished speaking. He was so derisive of the whole thing it made Kealey a little nauseated and she quietly slipped from her seat and left the room.
Her messenger bag was slightly heavy, loaded with some of the design books she’d borrowed at the end of the school year to help her with uniforms. Now was as good a time as any to return them, and as Kealey left the room, she checked her watch and let out a surprised little squeak. No wonder it had felt like so long, the speaker had ran over. Poor Shin had been waiting outside all this time…she picked up her pace towards the library, completely oblivious to the redhead that pushed off from the wall outside the classroom and followed behind her.
