Apparently she really had learned a few things since coming to New York, Kealey realized as she teased Shin right back. The only problem was, she could feel his emotions. For a moment, Kealey wondered if it was possible to burn to death from blushing.
The decision didn’t seem so difficult all of a sudden and Kealey realized very quickly that they were going to kiss. It was kind of a shocking realization, she’d gotten a little caught up in the teasing, but it didn’t matter.
There were so many emotions involved in a kiss, and Kealey got to feel them doubled. That was interesting, but not exactly what Kealey was thinking about. No, her brain was doing the same happy dance that had her belly full of butterflies. Overload? Maybe a little, but the best kind.
Then…it was over. That wasn’t nearly as exciting. Kealey grinned, cheeks still burning. ”Yeah…that was definitely better than lemonade.” she said.

Really? It was a tough decision, was it? Kealey pursed her lips a little bit and chuckled, dropping her eyes for a moment and shaking her head as Shin pondered the “obviously difficult” decision laid out before them.
Oh, she could pick? There was only one thing to do when a person was so intent on teasing, and grinning so very innocently.
”Well…” she said softly, leaning just a little bit closer, ”All afternoon…since I left that lake, there’s been one thing I couldn’t stop thinking about…”
Just because Kealey didn’t flirt, didn’t mean she couldn’t. She’d picked up a few things since coming to New York…
Even closer still she leaned…looking up through her lashes, ”Lemonade” she said, mere inches away now.
”But do you think maybe that can wait?” she asked, smiling broadly. When teasing a teaser, one didn’t want to go too far after all.

Ah. That’s where the blush had come from. The first two suggestions were fairly innocuous and Kealey had thought that maybe she was overreacting a little to the mischievous feelings Shin had been broadcasting. The last, though, probably blush worthy.
It was an interesting situation, almost like he was asking, and for another split second Kealey mentally berated herself for thinking she needed time to work this all out in her mind. What had there been to wonder about? This decision didn’t require nearly as much thought, though and Kealey stopped thinking, lest Shin take the time for hesitation.
She nodded her head slowly, blush intensifying as she smiled a little lopsidedly and gave a one-shouldered shrug, ”Or…we could do all of them.” she suggested helpfully.

Shin said he’d help her practice, and Kealey nodded her head slowly and thoughtfully. Was it a possibility? Sure, she’d still have to ‘listen in’ on people…but if she could narrow it down to a degree where there wasn’t as much all the time. The concept itself was almost too good to be true and Kealey decided she wouldn’t get her hopes up, not yet. Not until they’d managed to do some more work and figured out whether or not it was even a possibility.
They would find out though. Just not right now. Shin looked to the ceiling to ponder the answer to her question about his headache and Kealey smiled. He did that a lot when he thought, and he was thinking pretty hard, she could tell by the level of concentration he was putting off.
Shin brought his eyes back down and Kealey met them as he said he was better, then found herself blushing slightly at the mischievous tone his emotions had taken on, that was interesting. He asked what she’d had in mind for alternate activities and she shrugged her shoulders lightly, ”I don’t know, did you have an idea?”

Just him. Shin wanted her to try and focus on just him. As far as Kealey knew that wasn’t something she could do. She didn’t actively use her powers like other people did, so she didn’t know if she could actually narrow the field.
She didn’t think so, but Shin had asked her to try…
Kealey nodded her head and closed her eyes as he asked if she’d simply focused on one emotion before, like she did at the pokemon tournament.
“It’s not quite like that…” she said, voice trailing off as she tried to isolate the sources of the different emotions she could feel in the mansion by something other than proximity.
”When I change things…I still feel all the others…unless I get rid of them…but then I can‘t bring them back.”
Shin was right there next to her and she could fell all those feelings that identified him as himself, but there were others around too, even if they weren’t close. Teens and adults all over this part of the mansion feeling their feelings, sharing them unwittingly with Kealey.
She focused only on Shin and tried to push the other emotions away…tried harder….and….nothing.
Kealey opened her eyes and smiled at Shin, shaking her head, ”Nothing. Thank you for thinking to have me try, though. I’d never really thought about it this way before…maybe…I can practice.”
She shrugged her shoulders, still smiling and nudging Shin similarly to how he‘d nudged her a few moments before, ”We don’t have to do that now, though…how’s your head?”

Kealey sighed slightly, she hadn’t meant to kill the happy mood in the room with the conversation, but it was something that nagged at her, and she supposed it was better to have it all aired out. Shin empathized and Kealey nodded her head, eyes still lowered.
He was still optimistic, and Kealey decided she needed to take a page out of his book and stoop brooding about things that weren’t going to change.
Shin nudged her with his shoulder, and Kealey raised her head as he asked if they could try something. Her head tilted slightly to the side, and the blond nodded, unable to do anything but smile back.

He felt for her, and Kealey was silently impressed with the teen. Few of Locke’s age were able to get a handle on what it was Kealey could do. Sure they felt sorry for her, but the level of understanding she could feel from the boy in the kitchen with her made Kealey tilt her head a little bit to the side.
Another feeling crept into Locke’s psyche and Kealey shook her head, ”Oh please don’t feel guilty. I’ve been doing this for a very long time. It’s not as bad now as it used to be. Most people just think I’m flighty and dimwitted.”
It was the truth, and Kealey had never held it against the people who felt that way. What else was a person to think about someone who was as impulsive as Kealey?
Her comment, or compliment, was not taken as well as the rest of the conversation…and that was saying something. The boy was mortified, and certain when he spoke, and then he dove into his meal like it would hide him more effectively than the hair he was so determined to use as a curtain.
”If you’re talking about your eye…I noticed it ages ago.” she said, considering showing the boy one of her two very large scars. She tossed that idea away quickly. With as uncomfortable as he’d been so far, that would simply make things worse.
”You know. Everyone around here thinks their either strange or weird in some capacity or another. If there’s any place you’re going to find people who look more than skin deep, this is it. Trust me. I know.”
She crossed her arms and maneuvered until she made her way into Locke's line of sight, "And it's not that bad."

Now they were both amused by the pirate. Kealey figured that was better than the alternative…still, how had Shin managed to find a pirate in the middle of New York City? It was going to bug her. It would simply have to bug her.
Apparently the aspirin hadn’t been precisely what Shin was talking about and Kealey’s cheeks flushed again when he said he felt better because she was there. ”Really?” she said, smiling back. ”I’m glad I could help…” It was really only fair, though, the hangover was her fault.
Shin mused that maybe the pirate had been Sam and Kealey stared at him for a minute before bursting out laughing. Sam as the pirate…it was almost too funny for words. Kealey would be glad if it had been him, though, rather than some strange pirate in the middle of the city.
Shin didn’t want her apologies though. He didn’t want them in the best way.
How did he understand so much? How was he so sure he understood? It was those same feelings, the ones that made her warm from head to toe.
Shin kept talking and Kealey just looked at him, wondering if what he said was true. Why did he think she was so strong? So special? He really believed it too. ”You make me feel lucky…” she said earnestly, with a small smile.
For some reason, she still felt the need to explain.
”I just wish I could shut it all off sometimes.” she confessed, dropping her eyes. ”When it’s just me, it all feels so easy. To just know…and to have everyone else know who I really am.”
Kealey squeezed Shin’s hand, ”Not everyone sees me as well as you do, Shin.”

A pirate? Kealey tilted her head as she tried to figure out what that could have meant. ”So you went out, found a pirate, drank with him until you forgot half the day, and still managed to get back here in one piece?” she said, trying to work everything out in her head. It sounded ridiculous…
”Sounds like you had a great night.” she said, unable to hold back the laughter in her voice.
He said that the details were coming back to him, and Kealey was more than a little bit amused when he made his way back into the main part of the room and sat down beside her. Kealey grinned when he said he was feeling better, but raised an eyebrow in slight disbelief. ”That must be the best aspirin in the world.” she commented, turning her hand over lacing her fingers with his.
”Really? A pirate? I didn‘t know pirates even existed anymore.”
Kealey shook her head slightly and looked over to Shin apologetically, ”I’m sorry I made you wait like that…I’m still not as good at figuring myself out as I am everyone else.”

There was the happy. Shin grinned, Kealey grinned, they grinned. Something was still off about Shin, though. Kealey knew what it was like to wake up after a night of over imbibing and did not envy him the way he’d been feeling in a little while. Not that Kealey had great experience in the matter, but still….hangovers were not fun.
Shin stepped back after a few moments and Kealey watched as he retreated into his room, trailing behind at the invitation and shaking her head wryly as he commented that he was going after aspirin. Yup, hungover.
”You’ll want some water too.” she called, moving further inside and dropping to sit on the edge of the bed.
”Who did you go drinking with anyway?” she followed up, curiosity overwhelming sympathy for the moment.

Certainty was one of those things that Kealey was rarely disappointed to feel. It was an integral part of her little built in lie detector. If a person felt certain about the things they were saying and doing, they were almost always telling the truth.
Certainty was definitely what she’d hoped to feel from Shin, now that they were on the same page. Certainty meant that he hadn’t changed his mind during a night of what appeared to be copious drinking.
She was so focused on the certainty, so relieved that was what she was feeling from Shin, that she was almost shocked when his head dropped and his forehead rested against hers.
Shin verbalized what Kealey had felt a few moments before, and she let out breath that she hadn’t realized she was holding.
”Good.” she said, not inclined to move a centimeter from where they were standing, even if any passersby might find the exchange happening in the doorway odd. ”That’s what I hoped you would say.”

This was a test. This had to be a test. She’d felt the moment of realization when it hit Shin and she’d thought they were home free.
Her hands were still on Shin’s shoulders and she resisted the urge to shake him. Shaking plus hangover would not equal happiness. This was supposed to be a happy occasion, wasn’t it?
Suddenly, the whole thing seemed so funny. Kealey dropped her head and laughed for a moment before looking up at Shin’s question. At least he knew what she was talking about now.
” About that...” she said, cheeks darkening as she spoke.
”I wasn’t sure…now….well, now I’m sure.”
That probably wasn’t going to be enough. Not the way things had been going so far.
Kealey took a deep breath.
”I like you too.” she said, blush intensifying even more.
”I went someplace where people were far enough away that it was just me, only me and I could really think about it.” she stopped and nodded.
”I’m sure…” she dropped her eyes, ”Unless you changed your mind…”

Drinking? He thought he’d been drinking. Shin was uncertain, Kealey could feel it…but if he’d been drinking he was pretty sure he’d had a lot. Despite that fact, Kealey let out a slight sigh of relief. At least he was okay. Kealey, on the other hand, was feeling pretty bad. She’d driven the poor man to drink with her silly uncertainties and requests for time to think. Who did that?
Apparently she did, and apparently Shin then drank, and now he didn’t remember what she had to be sure about.
Kealey just stared at him for a moment. She blinked.
Well. This had to be the concept of Karma asking to be paid out. Kealey had made Shin own everything the day before in the cab. Pushing gently until he’d ultimately confessed. This was simply karma requiring her to do the same.
Kealey took a deep breath.
”The conversation from yesterday. In the cab…think Shin.” she reached out and put her hands on his shoulders, ”I told you I needed to be sure of something. You said it was worth the wait…”
She looked at him for a moment, ”You waited…and drank…and I went and made sure.”
Paying out Karma was one thing, slapping someone in the face with a memory that might come as a bit of a shock was something else all together.

He couldn’t….remember the night before? He had a…headache. Kealey’s eyes widened slightly at the nervous laughter.
”You didn’t get hit in the head, did you? Did I miss something? Why didn’t you come and get me? Is everything alright?” she said in a rush, half reaching out towards Shin.
Something was off. His room was dark, he was sleepy, he asked how she was.
”I’m…more sure of things than I was yesterday.” She said by way of explanation, hoping that he’d be able to puzzle out what that meant. Why had this suddenly gotten so difficult?
Shin was smiling, Kealey smiled back, hoping two and two would equal four. Shin was good at math.

Kealey had almost been ready to give up on the door and resort to either scouring the mansion to find Shin, or sitting down to wait at his room until he showed up. What else was there to do? She had to wait, had to tell him. Then the door had opened…and there was Shin. Saying good…morning?
Kealey stood for a moment and stared. Shin looked…tired…and felt….a little disoriented? Kealey blinked for a moment, trying to regain her bearings. Why was she out of breath again? Oh yeah, she’d ran here. Oh…yeah…she’d ran here to tell Shin…
”I went to a lake. Really really early this morning. A lake that was really far away from everything, so I could think. I didn‘t want to wait.”
Wow, that was definitely not how she’d planned this conversation to start.
