The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

James sat up and listened attentively, filing the information away into the large filing cabinet that was his brain. It was all helpful, stuff he hadn't known beforehand...well, not in so much detail. Self inflicted solitary confinement kind of left you out of the loop in pretty much everything.
Sam Johnson. He knew the name, it floated at the back of his mind. Self defense training, good. That's what he wanted. An amazing gu-wait. That sounded pretty gushy. James raised an eyebrow, hey, if Serena had a thing for one of her teachers that wasn't his business. Then again, James didn't even know if Serena was into guys, maybe girls? Maybe both? Didn't really matter at the end of the day.
Admittedly James used to have sneaking suspicions about the nature of her friendship with Leon, sneaking off during the night and all...but no. That wasn't any of his business either.
Leon wasn't welcome. Go home, Leon. Sadly the other teenager wouldn't go home, he was there to stay for a cup of tea.
While he was thinking about his old roommate the words slipped out. "Would've asked Leon, if he hadn't...y'know." James muttered, his mind elsewhere.

James could count the total amount of friends he'd had in his lifetime on one hand. He could also count the amount of people who had gone out of their way to help him on one hand with a thumb to spare. Although he hadn't admitted it to himself, that wasn't something he had expected to change for awhile. Either James was getting lucky or continuously pounding the words 'It will get better' into his brain for months was actually starting to pay off.
So one could say that the teenager wasn't so good at expressing his gratitude.
Amelia looked just as uncomfortable as James did himself, that helped. In a so very strange way. The gratitude in James lifted its head in surprised yet sluggish motion, sadly its wasn't used to being awoken all that often. A grateful smile split James' usually awkward and tomato red face from cheek to cheek.
"Wow. Thanks Amelia. I suppose that means I owe you one."
He stepped forwards and took the 'Han Shot First' shirt and a pair of jeans. "I've got to ask, though, are you sure its okay? I don't want to set you back without giving anything in return." James scuffed his foot forwards and backwards over the floor awkwardly. He wasn't trying to sound ungrateful, but he would rather go another couple of weeks with dying clothes and ask for a loan from someone like Serena. Then get a job, because there was no doubt that he would get a job after this fiasco.
If it wasn't too much of a problem then he was fine with the idea, but when people go out on a limb to help a sorry excuse like himself and suffer for it themselves, James found it just didn't sit right in his mind.
It was pretty soul destroying. Even if James wouldn't admit it to himself, the whole thing had made his originally dying resentment for his mother grow a little. Why did she have to give his clothes away? Just why?

James hadn't really thought about that, Serena had managed to tear his shoulder off by accident. The amount of damage she could do with a well placed blood lance could potentially be, for want of a better phrase, crazy as f***. James was pretty happy with his level of control over his ability, what he really needed was to learn some self defense. A repeat of the alleyway incident wasn't one he wanted to repeat.
"Well, I'm more interested in learning some self defense in general really. I need metal for my mutation, well it seems that way. If there isn't any around then I cant use it."
It didn't occur to James that he had practically just said 'Yeah, I almost got beaten to a pulp so now I need to know how to not get beaten to a pulp'.

James blinked. That reaction was completely unexpected. James expected her to agree and call him an idiot then walk off. Evidently he had completely misjudged the woman in front of him, the realization made him feel a little bad about it, after all Amelia hadn't done anything to suggest she was at all like that. James had assumed. Admittedly the assumption was probably fueled by his fear of women, not that it was an excuse. Just a reason.
The fuse in James' brain which had blown was swiftly replaced by the moving of the hair, at the end of the day James was still a teenager. What did they say about people who assume? Something about making an ass of yourself...he'd heard it somewhere.
"You make an ass of someone or something like that...right?" He couldn't quite remember, but saying anything was betting than sitting there and staring like a zombie.

The burning in James' lungs was not such a lovely sensation. Regardless it had caused him to calm down a little. His arm had changed and he was under water. The question was, how much of it had changed? James pulled his sleeves up to the elbow. It stopped just before the joint, he could see the jagged line where the metal stopped and the skin began.
James unceremoniously underwater facepalmed. Luckily he could think straight and he forced his hand to change back. It worked, slowly. The transformation took a good five seconds and then he was free to go.
With his body screaming, James pushed against the bottom of the lake and shot upwards towards the surface with a pretty underwater mud explosion. Ten seconds later stumbled up the bank, dripping, cold and freezing.
Gasping, James made it two meters away from the water before his legs twisted underneath him and he fell onto his back with a soft groan. He vaguely registered a strange coloured person in the corner of his peripheral vision but ignored it.
James looked to the left sluggishly and saw a twisted lump of clothing. Well, at least the girl was still in the lake, she would've taken her clothes with her otherwise.

James raised an eyebrow. Better aim and control? Was the whole stabby stabby thing a regular occurrence. He somehow doubted it.
He hadn't thought so, Serena certainly wasn't the type to go around stabbing people, then again Jame had thought Leon wasn't the type of guy to go around suffocating people with cigarette ash, but he'd been wrong. Control wasn't something James had an awful lot of when it came to his mutation. It still activated when he was angry, but he had worked out some of the catches and kinks.
Hmm, James wondered if Serena had gone through training or something along those lines when it came to her ability.
"So...you have had training to control it?" He asked curiously. Any information he could gather on the subject might be useful.

Although James was relieved that he didn't have to say it out loud, he was also suffering from a serious wave of anxiety, it tended to happen when something on this level of awkward happened.
A horrible feeling, comparable to nausea shot up from James' gut, infecting the rest of his body. His vision seemed to blur a little just as his heartbeat skyrocketed. The teenager wouldn't have been at all surprised if Amelia could see the arteries on his neck pulsing. In situations like this, James would usually make an excuse and run away, but he couldn't really do that.
For a good ten seconds it was all James could do to stare at a space of in front of his eyes. Then his mind kind of crumbled in on itself, what was there to say? He had made a total prick of himself and wasted the nice girls time.
"No." James replied flatly. He was in a kind of emotional stasis, at a point where he literally couldn't feel any more awkward. Sighing he dumped the clothes on the nearest shelf and pulled out his wallet. After fiddling around a bit he got out the right change for two bus rides. Good, at least he could salvage something from the situation.
Without thinking much he took Amelia's hand and placed the change into it, then looked at her. Even in his current state his face went a deep red. "Here, Its change for two bus rides, one back and the other is for the one you wasted on me. Sorry for wasting your time, I'm an idiot."
Well, the best thing about a lowest point was it could only go up from there.
James was lying on his back, looking at the ceiling when Serena calmed down and spoke. He felt unusually chilled, neutral, even. Strange, he hadn't felt like this for a long time. Maybe a good laugh was all he had needed?
Delicately, James probed the back of his mind, something felt wrong, missing. No...that wasn't right, something had been replaced. Replaced with...comfort? Hmmm, it was certainly new. He considered it for a moment, what exactly was it?
Then realization dropped on him like a ton of bricks. He didn't feel awkward. It just wasn't there, in its place sat the nicer feeling of something closely linked to happiness, comfort wasn't quite the right word, but it was the closest he could come to an answer.
Finally, James felt comfortable around a person. Maybe it was because he had made her laugh? The teenager had no idea, it was as if he had laughed all the awkwardness out of him. That was the only explanation he could come up with.
James had made people laugh before, but he hadn't really laughed with someone. Leon maybe, but not really. Admittedly that friendship had been largely one sided on James' part.
He had made his mum laugh in the past, but that was different. If he did she would have just chuckled, ruffled his hair and said something like 'whatever you say, chicken'. But that thought process wasn't going to help anybody.
"You know," James said with a surprisingly confident grin. "I haven't laughed like that since before you tore a chunk of my shoulder of." Although it was by no means a happy memory, James sat up and beamed at Serena, still chuckling a little bit while rubbing his shoulder absentmindedly.

James got the impression that Orochi wasn't happy with him, or at least wasn't happy with his mistake, the dragons glare was boring holes in his body. It was a little frightening. Orochi seemed to get it though, who Smaug was. Interesting, James wondered how the dragon read books. It was a funny mental image, the huge dragon wearing a pair of undersized specs, peering down at an undersized book.
As for Smaug getting killed by a mortal man, yes that made perfect sense. All things considered. Plus Smaug wasn't a god. And neither are you. James thought in the back of his mind. He would have said it out loud, if he didn't think that the dragon attacking him would have ended up with Masque getting involved. this guys inflated opinion was a tad irritating, nothing annoyed James more than people who thought they were better than others, or more deserving at least.
James had to remind himself that the guy was a dragon, that plus he had probably been led to believe that he was a god, after all, what other possible explanation could there be? Orochi brought his tone back to a more friendly one, that was reassuring.
Okay, that question was a reasonable one, but also quite broad. How do you answer that? "Well, There are a load of differences, I suppose you will get to see them better than most people who ask that question. Considering you will be living here."
James decided to leave the differences thing to Masque, he was older, or at least James assumed so.

Mention of spoungebob made James laugh, it was true that the yellow guy used to rip his pants open quite often, then again he had got into worse situations with invisible ink.
Amelia seemed to think James was looking for a girlfriend, well he wasn't. Or at least that was what he had been telling himself. He didn't really need one anyway, what would he do with it? Well, besides the obvious stuff which you aren't supposed to mention, anyway.
Either way, James was kind of grateful for the fashion tips. They were certainly eye opening. He hadn't really considered the fact that girls might be more interested in guys who were well dressed. If it were him, he would be looking for someone who was willing to put up with his somewhat geeky interests, not his fashion sense.
Yeah, it was a shame he didn't have cash for a...wait. What? Oh, oh dear. James realized that he may have made a terrible mistake. Turning slowly to look at Amelia he muttered. "Yeah...shame I don't have m-money for...a...s-suit."
He probably looked terrified, he certainly felt terrified. He wondered if she would work it out, or if he would have to tell her awkwardly.

Again with the winking! God, you could even think she had some obsession with making him feel uncomfortable! His eyes snapped down to the bedsheets again, watching his finger trace the spiral pattern. James was pleasantly surprised when Serena started having a giggle fit.
Evidently the Valdimir comment hadn't upset her, quite the opposite. Lifting a finger, he watched the girl giggle, it was kind of funny, actually. "I...uhhh..." James tried holding it in, his cheeks puffed out a little, but he gave in.
Falling onto his back again, James also started laughing. That felt strange, he hadn't done much of that recently. If you didn't count the weird laugh where you kind of blew air out of your nose, he'd done some of that.
"Maybe I could have come up with a better one, It was kind of a spur of the moment thing." He chuckled.

Masque shuddered, well that was to be expected. James had been trying hard not to think about it, although he was pretty sure he hadn't hurt anyone seriously. Besides the woman he had hit in the head, maybe? Truthfully he had been trying his best to not think about it, a large amount of people had probably died.
"Mhmm," James nodded, here they probably couldn't be in a safer place, in all honesty. "Amen to that." He replied with a smile. As he finished speaking, James felt the dragons eyes burning into the back of his head. Oh, it seemed Orochi picked up on his mistake. Turning around he stuck his hands in his pockets while rocking back and forth on his heels nervously.
Orochi didn't sound upset, though. Had he really not made the connection? Smaug? Who hadn't heard of Smaug? Tolkiens dragon was hardly known for his good personality, what with the whole superiority complex and insane levels of selfishness. Then again, maybe the dragon mutant wasn't so big on reading? Its not like he had fingers to read with.
"Sorry, my mistake. Smaug, hes a dragon. Large with lots of gold, big wings...breathes fire. Hes in a popular book called 'The Hobbit'" James said this very cautiously. There was a chance the big guy would take it as an insult, or a compliment. He guessed it was a 50/50.
Not like Orochi needed an ego boost. However, if said ego boost meant the didn't get squished, that was okay.

Orochi seemed to like the greeting, that was good. To James' surprise the dragon bowed back, although it didn't seem like a bow of mutual respect. Almost as surprising was the detail of the flame which Masque spoke with, that was undeniably an interesting power.
James nodded at the other mutant, "Yes, I've been here a while." It was a shame him and Masque had last met under such dangerous circumstances...it had been pretty horrible and wasn't an experience the steel-skinned teenager wanted to experience a second time. Either way he smiled, not wanting to seem like a prat.
Mentally slapping himself James stopped thinking about it, there was a dragon to consider after all. Orochi started speaking to Masque, complimenting his skin and asking if his presence had left him speechless. Definitely big headed, maybe a little delusional. Again, this was a dragon at the end of the day.
Then Orochi backed up onto his hind legs, wings outstretched. A shadow fell over James, making him feel even smaller than before. He couldn't tell if it was supposed to be a way of showing his physical superiority or simply born out of narcissistic tendency. Either way it was as equally mind blowing as it was frightening.
It made James consider something, could the dragon fly? His wings sure were big, but so was the rest of him. In contrast with the rest of his body, they looked a bit small. He would have asked but Orochi asked them a question before he could.
James nodded. "I am a student here, yes. May I ask, why are you here of all places, Smau-Orochi." Well, he had managed that one. It was just a slip of the tongue. James bit his lip, well. If the dragon tried to eat him...nah, he'd be fine. Steel is too chewy, that plus he doubted the dragon wanted stomach ache.

“STOP WASTING MY TIME!!!”
Oh you have to be kidding me. The purple guy was yelling. Great, get all of them to look at you. James had half the mind to turn around and roar a rude comeback, before he could Sam grabbed him and pulled him back.
Luckily James stayed on his feet, stumbled a bit but didn't fall. Good, he didn't want to look like an idiot. What was with this guys? Did he have any idea how heavy being made of steel was? Nobody could get around quickly like that.
"You try running around with steel skin!" James spat.
Sam ignored him, naturally as he was a little preoccupied some guys with purple stuff, great. That was completely normal, worrying.
“You should learn to protect yourselves better… the both of you. I’ll stay behind you two get the hell out of here before you get yourselves hurt.”
Right, okay. That he couldn't argue with. After all, James couldn't see any way to help the people beating the crap out of each other. Licking the inside of his mouth, he could taste blood. Okay, that was bad, he had taken enough of a beating to be bleeding...even through his steel hide.
James gave the demon looking mutant a glance. They were bleeding, that was bad. Okay, admittedly he didn't like the purple guys attitude, but it was stay and fight for no reason or run and be fine.
Deciding that leaving the purple guy was the best option, James spat a wad of blood on the floor and wiped his mouth. "Come on, lets get out of here." James said to the demon looking guy, after all, he hadn't done anything to earn dislike.
Turning he began to run down the alley, not too quickly. Fast enough to stay ahead of the crazies if they got past, but not so fast as to ditch his companion.
