The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Mariamariamariamaria.
Yes. Maria (my second, colourful rainbow ex-surfer girl and crystal Ender's younger but better sister) would like to meet Kiva. She's going to hang around the mansion a bit until she runs into her brother but she totally loves meeting new people. And she would love either more tattoos or to pubcrawl with cool people. Possibly both.
Also, the thread with Aiden stalled but if you're interested they could meet up again. He's a bit more socially confident now, is an x-trainee, and yeah. Stuff.

So. I'm working on a novel. I have 43000 words or so at the moment, so I'm roughly half done one book. I do intend to finish, edit, and submit it for publishing, and to that end I am looking for people to read what I have so far (including the beginning that definitely needs rewriting, but whatever) and point out plot stuff, mostly. I want people to actually critique things Helpful parties will end up on the Acknowledgements page under whatever name they desire.
If anyone is interested, shoot me a pm and I'll see about sending you a copy of where I currently am, as well as add you to the regular-update-mailing-list I'm trying to set up.
For reference, the novel (at least the part that isn't horrible beginning that I technically wrote a few years ago) contains undescribed nudity, adult language, death, conspiracy-that-isn't, conspiracy-that-is, murder, destruction, possible genocide, magic, emotional drama, nonbinary genders, a lack of sexual orientation labels in society, separate marriage and reproductive contracts, animals with irregular numbers of appendages just because they thought it was cool at the time, and a very observant but equally oblivious main character.

"I guess we can say I have an injured eye or something if they ask why I'm wearing sunglasses at night," he muttered. He still wasn't satisfied, but he wasn't exactly likely to be satisfied about any of this. Really, they were marching up to someone's psychopathic parents' door in order to rescue him from said psychopathic parents. Not a whole lot to feel satisfied about there.
Aiden tried not to slink out of the car and to the door that apparently led to the appropriate apartments. No security, not locked, just a general entrance. Okay. He edged inside and let himself sneak up the stairs. He didn't want to make a ton of noise, after all. They reached a hallway studded occasionally with doorways and little metal numbers. People really lived in places like this? Kind of made Aiden twitch.
He checked the number off Kaitlyn's paper and stopped at the right door.
Oh right, they had to actually knock. Aiden found the guts, though, even if he would really rather be halfway down the stairs already, if not halfway to the mansion.

Aiden briefly heard his name. He didn't risk trying to find out what was going on. What were they supposed to do if this thing crashed? He couldn't fly! He was pretty sure Persi couldn't fly either, and he'd sort out later who else was there. Maybe one of them could fly, but if they could make everyone fly they wouldn't need the plane.
Oh look, a fly. Maybe something on this contraption would be able to survive a crash, if it somehow managed to get outside of the plane before impact. He was pretty sure nothing would survive the actual impact. Impact was bad.
There was less vibrating. And someone was talking. He'd care about the talking later. Something about a park and surviving. Yeah, he'd deal with that later. Right now, he just tried to decide if the lack of vibrating was going to last or not. He didn't dare look out the window in case they were falling out of the sky or something. He was never going to ever get into a plane willingly. Ever. If people wanted him on a plane, they could knock him out again.

((Not dead! Really! Trying to get away from sheer thesisness x.x))
He did not feel particularly pleasant. His head seemed rather sore and there was a niggling feeling that he was forgetting something significant that was currently largely forgotten because it was external rather than internal. Internal was mostly taken up by the sore head thing.
External gained extra points when he realized that it was vibrating. Perhaps waking up would be a good idea. Vibrating things were rarely good.
He opened his eyes. Okay, nothing dramatic. Unfamiliar, but undramatic. He gave his head a weary shake and looked around. Seats, mostly empty, with straps. Seat belts? Were they in some weird vehicle?
Wait, that was a window. Except it didn't show land. Those were clouds. Really close clouds.
Clouds instead of land. Airplane?
Aiden had never been in an airplane before. He now realized that he had never been more than a few stories off the ground before. He hadn't thought he had a problem with heights.
If the arm rests weren't quite so strangled right now (and, you know, were capable of communication) they might disagree with that idea. Aiden would agree with them when he got past the whole OH SH!T DON'T MOVE thing going on in his head at the moment. He might even notice that Persi was staring at him by then too.

"Well, yeah. He had a reputation to uphold." And that reputation was a large part of what had kept Aiden safe without anyone beating up anyone. And it also meant that he got left alone. If Conri stood up for his brother but didn't really associate with him (you know, family but ew siblings), picking on Aiden would lose them Conri's regard but trying to hang out with him to get closer to Conri got them precisely nowhere.
... "A snake in the walls." Aiden was about as unimpressed as the mysterious voice, but apparently less offended. He did wonder why it had been suddenly turned into a stream of rather creative unsociable words, though. Strange. Being compared to a giant, lethal reptile that very nearly lived forever was hardly an insult. Unexpected, but Harry Potter basilisks were kind of cool. In a never-ever-want-to-meet-a-real-one kind of way.
He stepped up to eye the fudge. Looked like everything was dissolved and it was starting to warm up. "Okay, you can stop stirring now. Can't stir it while it's boiling or it messes with the consistency afterwards."

Aiden pointedly pulled off his sunglasses and stared at Kaitlyn. "Do I really look human to you?" At the very least, he knew very well that his eyes were pretty disconcerting to anyone who didn't expect them, and some people who did anyway. "Human mismatched eyes are both normal colours, like blue and brown. Silver is not blue."
Yes. He had a point. How kind of her to notice. "If you can do it without people on the other side noticing, that would be good. It'll be harder to explain what we're doing there, but hopefully it won't be hard to find Persi and then we can tell the truth and book it." Yes. That was pretty much his plan for getting Persi away from his parents. Tell them they were there to save him from them, grab him, and run like hell.

Aiden blinked slowly. Jude's outburst still made no sense. Aiden wasn't lonely. He was comfortable with the amount of time he spent by himself, and really wasn't entirely averse to spending more alone if that happened to come up. And he did spend time with other people, so he was even safe from the psychotic recluse status that seemed to hang around most of the craziest villains.
... Actually, he spent a lot more time around people here than he used to. No supervillain status for Aiden. The mansion said so, apparently.
He conveniently seized on whatever it was Jude was rambling about now instead of continuing with that thought. "No. Of all of them, definitely not him." Aiden tried not to twitch or laugh at the thought of being friends with CS. "He hung my last roommate off the roof and offered to drop him. Why?"
Aiden was getting very confused now, and vaguely suspicious. "Well, yeah. The batons aren't for show."

Well, that was not helpful.
He was a little too quick to judge, though. Apparently Kaitlyn did have something resembling a plan, and it wasn't bad. "That should get the door open, I guess, but most humans don't wear sunglasses at night." He tapped the rather noticeable set covering his mismatched eyes. "And going without them would be even more obviously off."
It did sound less dangerous than breaking in or something. Well, literally breaking in. With shattered glass and physical force and whatever. He'd do that if he had to, but it probably wouldn't be the most successful course of action. Something calm, even stealthy, at least to start. That was probably the way to go.

Perhaps Aiden would eventually be privy to a ride in a taxi that was not supremely awkward. That wondrous moment was still in the future, though.
This ride was horrible.
He was stuck in the car with a girl he really didn't know, but who had a host of less-than-perfected and less-than-polite skills, with an overall plan of breaking into some murderous strangers' home in order to rescue someone that he didn't really like much at all.
Persi didn't deserve to die, though. It took a pretty fancy degree of nastiness to get there, and Persi wasn't nasty so much as idly annoying. And a bit too inclined to star in TV commercials. ER-HEM.
They had to be getting close by now. Aiden peered out the window, distractedly zipping and unzipping the same section of zipper on his backpack over and over and over. He wasn't familiar with much of the city. He didn't know this part. He'd never been here before. There were a lot of buildings and not very many single houses. That certainly complicated things. Aiden wasn't used to apartments. He'd never even been in an apartment building before.
"Have you been around here before?" he asked his companion in crime quietly, still staring out the window.

Couldn't pay enough attention to notice that Aiden didn't want to talk about this. Tch. "Unofficially, yeah. Only person I did." Leave it at that, leave it at that, leave it at that.
...
"My conscience doesn't sound like a girl," he said flatly, looking around but still not seeing anyone. "There has to be someone here," he said to Persi. Bleh. He didn't want people being around."You see anyone?"

.... What.
Was Persi really so bad? He didn't blurt out random, irrational things. He drew irrationally, sure, but he didn't do... that. He eyed his new roommate sidelong. Yeeeaaahhhhhhhh probably best to go. Would it look too weird if he left right now? He'd have to come back eventually, but maybe it would be best if Jude had a chance to... calm down.
But what if he pulled something else like this again? While it might be good for Aiden to get better at reacting to irrational things, he really didn't want to have to do that every time he walked into his own room. Most of the time he just wanted to sleep.
Or he could bite the bullet and try and figure out was going on in Jude's strange skull. He didn't want to. That involved talking to people far more than he wanted to. Aiden didn't like talking to people. He glanced at Jude again. Ehhhh.... "What?"

Someone clearly wasn't aware that there was a mass murderer in the building, to be that unobservant. It wasn't like Aiden was shrouded in snow or something.
Oh. That was where he recognized the guy from. Okay. Masque was here? Huh. All right then. He bit into his chicken leg and tore off a small bite before noticing the letters on the guy. Right, visual communication. "You too," he said after swallowing. "I didn't know you lived here."
No one else would be here in the middle of the night, right? No one who didn't live there? It wasn't like some place where people would come and stay for a few days and be stressed and wander around at night because they couldn't sleep. The stressed people wandering at night already lived there. As long as certain people didn't wander at night, though...

Aiden glanced over his shoulder. Jude seemed to be thinking about something. It didn't keep him from talking, though. "This space isn't going to be more helpful than any other space," he said drily. Excited... to... hang out? Aiden didn't get it. Why would Jude be excited?
Oh. As opposed to someone who ate glue. Yeeeaaahhh that would be pretty easy to improve upon. "Er."
The concept that someone would go this far out of his way to make Ai feel welcome and.... appreciated? was even stranger. Really? Appreciated? It was all about as alien and unexpected as suggesting that Aiden walk into the White House and inform the president that he was taking over the country.
He floundered for a moment or two before busying himself with neatening and reorganizing the books on his desk. "Um........ thanks," he said quietly.
