The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The encouragement helped her ego a lot, and Evelyn felt her doubt melt away a little bit. It didn't feel like weeks since she relied on a bodyguard to protect her now. It felt like years ago. She felt like she could do this now. But Maya was right, and there was still a lot to learn. Heck, how long had Mirror been doing this and she still had stuff to work on?
"I feel....relieved. I guess. I didn't think the echoes would help with anything like this. I sort of hoped, I guess. As amusing as the whole 'detective' type profession would be, it's fun to see what other options there are." She rambled, and then cut herself off before she got too out of hand.
Strength... Well that was one way to word it. She was lucky she could throw the Sai at all after how she grew up.
"Soooo, you're the teacher. This was kind of your training session. What else should we work on? I pretty much suck at all of it so you can't really choose wrong." She said with a helpful/nothelpful smile. "Or I can just keep falling for you." She atted with a mischievous smirk.
Evelyn enjoyed her 'moment' for a few seconds, then stood before the echoes started picking up on things and lost their focus on training. She nodded at what Mirror was saying, and offered a hand to help the mirror-walker up.
"Well, we'll probably have to work on my balance if that's the case... I never was much of a gymnast or anything as a kid, and work is mostly just carrying stuff around." She admitted. She let out a puff of a sigh as she spoke though, shaking her head. "Feels like the list of things to work on keeps getting longer though."
She was somewhat disappointed with herself for growing up so...not necessarily lazy just, nonathletic. Intellectually, she could walk circles around people and she had done it on a number of occasions. But she always was book smart and not street smart. There was a lot to learn that didn't involve reading or wandering a museum. Sometimes she felt like she fell into this world Maya was in, and she was picking up on things, but it didn't make the process a whole lot faster. Maybe that's why the little victories made her a lot happier.
At least, the part about not ending up slung over Maya's shoulder like a sack of flour. Being back on the floor was still a bit of a failure, but she was on top this time at least, and she couldn't resist smirking at Maya's face. She sat back so she was somewhat sitting on Maya's stomach.
>>"I planned it that way."
"Sure you did." Evelyn laughed and leaned down, kissing Maya on the nose then pulling back with a somewhat victorious expression. "Come on, just let my ego have a moment." She grinned.
Evelyn looked like a graceful individual, but when it came to fighting, she was all impulse and no style. The soft padding on the ground made it a little harder to stand quickly, and that was all it took. Maya had her by the waist and she was still only halfway to her feet.
She knew there were really only two directions this could go. Either she was going to end up on the ground again, or over Maya's shoulder. She wasn't entirely sure Maya could lift her, and her ego really wanted to avoid getting knocked down. So instead she tried to backpedal out of Maya's grip, using her slim figure to be as elusive as possible.
The echoes drifted to analyze the training mat again. Sometimes she wished they were something she could kick for being less than helpful.
Forte was serious about this experiment, it seemed, and his movements were precise and took effort for the echoes to predict. By the time she registered what he was doing, he was already there, and she was scrambling out of the way far more than gracefully evading him. One hit was a miss, the next she deflected somewhat, but then she started picking up other feedback.
Control, focus, find what you need, allow only that to dominate your mind... She repeated in her thoughts, paraphrasing and trying to process the advice being said. She tried to listen to the echoes, hone them in on what was important. But it only halfway worked. The echoes were distracted by his face, his expressions. They were picking up not necessarily WHAT he was thinking, but the general tone of what was there. "What are you--"
FWAP.
She dodged right into his hand. The contact stung her nose and she stumbled backwards, yelping slightly and putting a hand to her face. She backpedaled a few steps, squinting and somewhat glaring at him now. "Cheater."
The response was what she had hoped for. Evelyn's grin grew a little wider, and it at least stopped the cheesy lines for the moment. The echoes started buzzing with new activity though. Maya was closing in, and Evelyn had thrown down a challenge she was fairly certain was not exactly in her favor. She scrambled through her memories, trying to pick up on any training that might help. There was a bit there from her unplanned sparring session with Forte, and she tried to combine that memory with watching the kids during gymnastic. It took a few moments to sort the information, and she stalled while side stepping away.
Isolate the echoes... She tried to remember, and waited until the right movements from Maya. When she saw signs she was going for the catch, Evelyn ducked and did a sloppy summersault, not exactly landing on her feet but at least getting to the other side of the mirorwalker. She tried to get to her feet quickly enough Maya wouldn't have time to turn and grab her. The echoes were still a lot faster than her body at this point though.
Maya's expression was priceless, and Evelyn let the echoes dutifully file the memory away for later. Now she had a memory of both Maya and Gawain to giggle about. Although she wasn't sure a picture of Maya's face would be as amusing without the words that sparked it. She might just have to leave those images in her head.
"Here I just thought you were trying out some of Sam's lines. Glad you haven't resorted to that yet." She teased. She rolled her eyes at Maya's defense and shook her head, braid twapping from one shoulder to the other. "Hey, that was a one time deal. You better watch it, I'm a quick learner. It's going to get harder to pick me up. Gotta keep you on your toes somehow." She smirked. The banter was amusing, but it gave her a little time to relax in the meantime.
Evelyn shook her head at Mirror's remark, and brushed her hands against her pants. There really wasn't a good comeback to the 'teacher's met' comment, just a slight smirk was all that really felt necessary. She listened more closely to the advice though, and tucked that away for later.
"Maybe the point is to just make it hurt less?" She mused, and then blinked slightly at Maya's follow up question. She couldn't resist the snort of laughter that bubbled from her, and she quickly put a hand across her mouse to muffle it. A grin spread across her face, and she slowly lowered her palm.
"That sounds like a really cheesy pick-up line...Just saying..." She remarked with a twinkle in her eye. She wasn't sure Maya intended it that way, but the image was just to amusing to let pass by.
Evelyn listened closely, and forced the echoes to listen as well. They seemed rather interested in the compositions and resistance of the mat they were falling into, but the important part was the falling, not what she was hitting. Listening didn't really make as much sense, but watching helped her understand a little more. She nodded, then smiled slightly, chuckling as Maya mirrored her nervous gesture.
"It makes a lot more sense once I watch, actually." She responded. She took a deep breathe and forced herself not to tense up so much, and tried falling again. This time she rolled into it slightly like Maya had said, and the impact wasn't as strong. It wasn't perfect, but certainly more graceful than her first attempt.
Evelyn watched quietly while Maya demonstrated, relieved when the echoes took notes. At least with her powers, seeing tended to be understanding in a relative way. Trying to push aside her initial hesitation, she turned and mimicked what Maya had done. She tried to remember to catch herself with her hands, and it mostly worked. It was just somewhat sloppier than perhaps her mirror-walking companion had done.
The training mat caught her and helped remove some of echoes warning signs she had been fighting. At least they shut up once they realized there was a reason for what was happening.
"Like that?" She asked, standing back up and rubbing the back of her neck sheepishly again. It was probably going to take a few tries to really get comfortable with the process, but at least she picked up on things quickly and it wouldn't be too tedious.
Evelyn paid for her purchases, and tucked the cd's in her bag. The transaction went rather smoothly, and there wasn't so much as an echo suggesting anyone had been following the conversation of the two women. With her bags resting on her arm, Evelyn moved for the door, and glanced at where Syn was waiting. She hadn't lost track of the mysterious mutant, and the fact she stayed while Evelyn paid suggested there was more she wished to discuss.
The mall wasn't terribly crowded outside the door. People clumped in front of stores but most seemed absorbed in their own adventures. Evelyn let the echoes wander, picking up snippets of conversation from a flirting couple, a mother and child, a lone teenager, and a few groups. Nothing was really notable. Nothing, that is, but the dark haired female next to her.
"You have anywhere else you were planning on shopping at today?" Evelyn asked politely, adjusting her bags as she came alongside Syn.
Evelyn nodded understandingly, and flashed a small smile to the younger girl. "I guess that's true. I've had more than enough people freak out because they thought I could read their minds, so I sort of know the feeling. I can't actually read minds, but sometimes what people assume you can do is enough..." She felt like she was wandering in circles with the conversation, and pushed her hair from her face again. It was more of a nervous gesture than something necessary to help see or anything like that.
She listened as Serena continued, and nodded slightly. "Well I guess that's encouraging. Any progress controlling your powers is good. I've always been a mutant, but I don't really know how much my control has grown. My Echoes seem to have a mind of their own. But at least yours is something you can grow with like that." She mused out loud. The clock chimed on the wall and her brain scanned her memories to sort out what time it was sounding.
Early. That was just far too early. Another night gone, sleepless again.
As quick of a learner as Evelyn was, there were still some things that were a push for her to do. Falling on purpose was one of those things. She grew was from an upper class society. While Maya grew up with on the streets, Evelyn had been rather...spoiled. It was only recently she was adapting to her new lifestyle and toughening up to meet the challenge.
She shifted from foot to foot, trying to figure out exactly what to do. The instruction had sounded simple enough, but it wasn't easy to let herself fall when the echoes tried their best to instruct her and advise her against injuries.
"Are you going to look at me like I'm stupid if I admit I have no idea how to just fall on my own?" She remarked rubbing the back of her neck. She hadn't so much as rough housed when she was a kid. You didn't get in fist fights at dinner parties either, and if she fell, she usually just accepted the skinned knees she'd get. If she tried to fall on purpose, she was fairly certain she was going to do something silly like just sit instead.
She had watched younger kids trying to do gymnastics once when she was younger, visiting one of her cousins. When they started doing backflips, it was always a struggle to let themselves bend backwards and rely on their hands to catch them. While learning, their legs would wobble and shake, and often they's flop to the ground without trying. She felt sort of like that now. While she wasn't trying to do any summersaults, just the sensation of falling created the reflex to try to prevent it from happening. Good in most situations but not with this training session.
He picked good imagery to get his point across, and Evelyn couldn't help nodding in agreement. He was bouncing off the affection he knew she had for art, and it made things a little clearer for her. But she still doubted it would make the actual experiment go any smoother.
Especially when the echoes started analyzing his actions and....
"Wait, what was on your m-" She scrambled somewhat sloppily to the side to avoid the punch at the last moment. It was somewhat of a blind dodge sideways, and she swatted at his hand slightly as she ducked. "Not even a go? What sort of gentleman behavior is that?" She said somewhat accusingly, then watching his facial expressions made the echoes flicker slightly in confusion.
She wondered if she should have rethought accepting his offer to come over. This seemed destined to damage her, or embarrass her. She wasn't sure which was worse. She took a few steps backwards, trying to by the echoes time to regroup and refocus. It was hard to keep any of her attention on what he was doing when they seemed to be trying to figure out what he was thinking.
Evelyn would have been fooled by Maya's fall, if the echoes hadn't picked up on the slight hesitation in the response. She had tried to be sneaky, but the mirror-walker had years of practice to fall back on...rather literally in this situation. Pushing herself to her feet, she tossed the sai back into the target where she wouldn't have to worry about falling into them. She shook her head at Maya's dispaly.
"How do you know you're not going to bust a wrist catching the weight on your arms though? Falling in general just seems like it'll suck." She remarked. She kept a small distance between herself and Maya now. Somehow, she didn't trust the other female, especially when she seemed intent to teach a lesson in falling. It seemed like a training session that was destined to bruise her.
"Then again, falling seems to happen whether I want it to or not..." Most of the time she just got knocked on her butt though. Landing on her back did have a nasty way of winding you though. The thing she wanted to avoid was hitting her head on anything though. What was just a painful bump for someone else was a mental headache and reboot for her.
