The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

After the last fiasco in the Danger Room, Evelyn felt a small hint of hesitation when the idea came up to try some training again with Mirror. As excited as she was to spent time with the mirror-walker, she felt like her constant string of bad luck recently was going to make the encounter end in disaster. Only a few days prior she got attacked by her sewer monster friend, only to have the night topped off getting jumped on the way home. She was only glad DocProf didn’t harp on her too much when he learned the events that caused her injuries. It must have been clear the terror of the event reprimanded her better than his words ever could have.
Evelyn had stuck to her room for a bit after that though, and beyond working she did little but remarkably, sleep. The playbacks she got were fairly calm the past couple nights, and she managed to make up for lack of sleep, feeling rested today, which was rare. Wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and her hair back in a braid, she fidgeted as she made her way down the hallway. Maybe she could at least learn something useful today. After getting beat up so badly, her desire to learn to defend herself was even stronger.
Memories flickered through her mind, but she focused on redirecting them before Mirror came. It was hard to believe so much had happened since they really got a chance to hang out. So long as the training session didn’t turn into a date, then back into training, then back into a date, they would be fine.
Now she only had to worry about looking silly trying to fight.
The Danger Room might not have been the best idea... but there was no better place in the Mansion for training. Maya got down there early and checked on all the systems in the god room; even though Sam had sworn not to sic the glitchy date scenario on them again, one could never be too safe, with the Danger Room's (and Sam's) track record. After she was sure everything was in order, she walked down to open the DR's main door.
"Hey there" she smiled, kissing Eve on the cheek "No dragons this time I promise. I have already slain them all."
Walking into the DR she revealed an empty room; the simulations were turned off. Instead, along the far side, there was a table and several stands covered in weapons of all shapes and sizes. No firearms, but pretty much everything else.
"Those are all real" Maya explained "No computer this time. Just wanted to show you what we've got for training and let you see which one feels comfortable... sounds good?"

Evelyn’s thoughts scattered at the sound of the door opening, and she smiled, cheek tingling slightly from the kiss. Poking her head around the doorway, she confirmed the claim of the dragonless area, and followed the mirror-walker inside. ”Looks like you did a good job hiding the evidence. Not a smudge of dragon blood to be seen.” She smiled. The expression faltered slightly as she saw the display of weapons.
”Sounds…. Good. Do I need to worry about stabbing myself accidently though? Most the weapons I handle at work are blunt…” She said, the echoes lazily identifying and assessing what was presented before her. The closer she stepped, the more information she started getting. She was relieved there were no guns, but she quickly dismissed the idea of handling any knives. The last thing she needed was to mess with anything that could slice her hand open this week. Knowing her, she’d make one of them bleed. She forced herself to relax before her pulse started to race though. She needed this. After everything she’d been through, she needed to be able to do more than scream and run away.
>>”Looks like you did a good job hiding the evidence. Not a smudge of dragon blood to be seen.”
"I made Sam clean it up" Maya grinned as the door slid shut behind them.
>>”Sounds…. Good. Do I need to worry about stabbing myself accidently though? Most the weapons I handle at work are blunt…”
"But you do handle them" Maya smiled "And there are not super sharp either, they are training weapons. Just real. You don't have to fight with them unless you want to. You can just try how it feels to hold them, for now."
Crossing her arms over her chest she stood back, letting Eve browse.
"So, what have you been up to, lately?" she asked, making casual conversation to make her less nervous.

Evelyn took a few breathes and wandered along the display of weapons. It took a second to calm the initial rush of nervous energy, but she was starting to feel more relaxed about the idea as Maya explained what they were doing.
That was, until the conversation shifted to what she’d been up to.
Memories moved through her mind in a little wash, from work, to her rather unfortunate adventures not long ago. She wasn’t sure how the other female would respond to everything, and, while she didn’t want to exactly hide what she had been doing, just blurting out ‘Got attacked by a sewer monster’ seemed like a bad way to start the day.
”Work has been a little busier, we did some inventory and stuff the other day, they finished repairing everything and business has started back up but we’re still short staffed.” She started. She moved forward and picked up one of the longer staff weapons. It felt odd in her hands, light at first but when she moved it, the ends felt heavier with the kinetic energy. The echoes struggled to estimate the weight and length, but she redirected them as she set it back down. She glanced over at the table, and picked up a pair of numchucks instead. She smirked as she held one of them up.
”This is just an accident waiting to happen with me.” The movement of the stick on the end of the chain kept catching the echoes attention, and she gave in a light flick, listening as the echoes responded trying to guess where they’d go. They pretty much sucked at guessing.
”What about you? What have you been up to?” She asked, glancing over as she set it back down.
>>”Work has been a little busier, we did some inventory and stuff the other day, they finished repairing everything and business has started back up but we’re still short staffed.”
"Well at least the exhibition's safe" Maya chuckled, remembering the crazy Home Alone edition the two of them did during the riots. She had not been in the museum during peaceful times, but she guessed it would still be quite busy.
Eve sorted through the weapons.
>>”This is just an accident waiting to happen with me.”
"You and everyone else." she shrugged; Mirror was not fond of Eastern martial arts. Or Eve handling weapons that had a high ratio of thwacking their user in the eye.
>>”What about you? What have you been up to?”
"Um... not much" Mirror shrugged again "It has been pretty quiet for the summer. Trying to avoid paperwork, mostly. I'm almost as good at it as Sam." she smirked, then leaned closer "And wondering where you were..."

The numchucks clunked back on the table, and Evelyn skipped over the knives without giving them a glance. She grinned slightly at Maya at the mention of the exhibit, and pushed her hair from her face as she fiddled with a boomerang. She couldn’t imagine when it would be useful, but it gave her something to hold while she talked.
”Yeah, not sure there would have been as much good news without your help.” She smiled, and set the boomerang back down. Wandering back to the racks with the larger weapons she picked up a spear and wondered what use either of them would be in a fight. Unless you were, you know, fighting in an arena, or in a cartoon.
”I start thinking some of these would be silly to use, but I guess if I had the right powers maybe they wouldn’t.” She mused aloud, setting the spear back down. She recognized the pair of sai on the end of the table, and was tempted to pick them up. But she wanted to scan the other weapons still. She considered the idea of picking up the bow and arrows, but part of her felt it would just feel like copying at that point. She needed something that felt comfortable to her. And since most her confrontations seemed to be close range, being armed with a bow and arrow probably wouldn't help with that.
Evelyn’s cheeks tinted a little pink at the last remark, but she smiled again as she chuckled. It was a good blush. She was somewhat flattered by the idea Maya was thinking about her. ”I guess I’ve been kind of restless this week. I visited with a few friends though. That sort of went ok…” She tried not to flinch as an ill-timed echo of pain went through her right arm. She moved over to the sai finally and picked them up. The weight felt nice in her hands compared to some of the other weapons, and not quite as silly. Heck, she already fought with them once. Maybe instinct made that choice already…
>>”I start thinking some of these would be silly to use, but I guess if I had the right powers maybe they wouldn’t.”
"Yeah, most people choose weapons that fit their powers" Maya agreed "We also have a bunch of firearms... not my favorite, but you can take a look if you want."
Honestly, Maya didn't even remember how she took up archery. She distinctly remembered Calley and Kat trying to get her into jousting, which was not very comfortable, and swords just never quite fir her style. But archery did, and she never regretted the choice.
>>”I guess I’ve been kind of restless this week. I visited with a few friends though. That sort of went ok…”
"Sort of?" Maya quirked an eyebrow. Sort of okay, with friends... Eve had a talent for making that colorful.
Evelyn shook her head, shifting the sai in her hand. “I’ve never been a big fan of firearms or knives, which I guess would be the most normal choice…” The memory of gunfire echoed in her mind and she shoved it away again. “I’m not really sure what fits my powers though… I guess the echoes help with my aim, but I always seem to end up in the middle of trouble…something closer ranged maybe…” She mused aloud. She glanced back up and shuffled slightly at Maya’s question, and rubbed the back of her neck.
”Well, I visited with my friend Kyle, and he just came here and it wasn’t really anything too eventful. But then I went to see a friend in the city and…well, he sort of tried to eat me.” She tried saying it as casually as possible, and not give away how terrifying the event had been. She glanced back at the table, but the echoes migrated back towards Maya, watching her body language. She quickly rambled on. ”I mean, he didn’t, I fed him pizza, but I guess he had trouble getting food and his mutation kinda...”
Well, that couldn’t have come out any more awkwardly. She glanced back at Maya and put the sai down, glancing back over at the ranged weapons. She willed the echoes to analyze them, but her own emotions kept sending them back to the mirror-walker.
>>“I’ve never been a big fan of firearms or knives, which I guess would be the most normal choice… I’m not really sure what fits my powers though… I guess the echoes help with my aim, but I always seem to end up in the middle of trouble…something closer ranged maybe…”
Maya watched the sai in Eve's hand. She had used one before, in the Danger Room when their session went wrong. There was a certain elegance in those weapons that fit Eve without her even noticing. Not like what she said next.
>>”Well, I visited with my friend Kyle, and he just came here and it wasn’t really anything too eventful. But then I went to see a friend in the city and…well, he sort of tried to eat me...
Maya's other eyebrow joined the first one waaaay up as she stared at Eve. Did she just say what she thought she had said?...
>>"I mean, he didn’t, I fed him pizza, but I guess he had trouble getting food and his mutation kinda...”
"Oh. Um." Maya blinked, trying to form coherent words "Who's this guy again?..."

The surprise was quickly evident on Maya's face as Evelyn tried explaining things. Feeling odd taking empty handed now, she reached back to the table then fiddled with the sai more in her hands, tossing it slightly as she answered the question. "Well, you know how there are those rumors about a sewer monster living in New York? Sort of an urban legend you hear around. Well, turns out, he's real, and just a teenager with some massive monstrous mutation. I met him awhile back when he was prowling around with some potato chips, close by my apartment, and when we got to talking I said I could bring him some better food sometime..."
She watched the sai flip slightly as she tossed it, the echoes studying the movement as she rambled on. Each little toss, they mused more about the weight, guessing how many spins would result each time, watching it fall back into her palm. "And then I did and... He just doesn't have the best control over his mutation. Kinda why he keeps to himself." The sai went back down, and she picked the boomerang back up. It felt a little awkward now, and she felt like her choices were narrowing in.
Maya kept blinking as she listened, for there was not much else to do. Eve, with her track record of getting into life-threatening danger, went ahead and visited the most notorious urban legend of New York City...
>>"And then I did and... He just doesn't have the best control over his mutation. Kinda why he keeps to himself."
"Go figure" Maya shook her head in disbelief as she watched Eve toss the sai up and down. It was better than staring at her. Maya tried really hard not to be overprotective of her girl...friend, but sometimes it was not easy to avoid.
Another ill-timed memory made her fumble the next catch and the sai clattered to the floor. She reached for it with her left hand instead of her right, then set it back on the table, rubbing the back of her neck to avoid rubbing her arm. Sometimes, the echoes made it feel like she was injured all over again. It didn't help that her mind kept drifting back to the night which sparked the sensations and took effort to bury back down. Meanwhile, the echoes were giving all sorts of feedback from Maya. She wasn't sure if she was upset, or just worried... maybe protective was a better word.
"Well...yeah. Nothing DocProf couldn't help patch up though... I would rather not relive the event though..." Ironically, she knew she would have to. But the phrase was mostly a note to herself to never try something that stupid again. She poked the mace on the table, and watched it roll over, clunking against some of the smaller weapons. She wasn't sure she would even have the upper body strength to lift that, let alone swing it....
Maya didn't miss the hesitation in Eve's movements as she picked up the weapon. She might have been hurt, or she might have had echoes telling her where she had been hurt. It was hard to tell...
>>"Well...yeah. Nothing DocProf couldn't help patch up though... I would rather not relive the event though..."
"I bet" Maya sighed, stepping closer, trying to get a better look at her without her noticing (girl can dream). She was not entirely okay with knowing that Eve put herself in danger (again) but there was no good way of saying it without sounding overprotective, and that was the first ever thing Maya had learned about Eve: she did not like being a damsel.
"So... um. He lives in the sewers? Should we talk to him? Y'know... try to help?"

Evelyn turned and faced Maya, one arm crossed lightly across her body and holding the other. She could read the other female's expression, and wondered if Maya could see her own emotions as clearly. Getting attacked had terrified her, and it was hard to just act casual about it when she really didn't feel that way about the situation at all.
Even complete strangers knew how foolish her actions were.
"You don't have to tell me it was a bad choice to make... I kinda had that idea knocked into me...I keep wanting to feel like I can defend myself and not need someone to come to my rescue all the time but the fact is, I'm not that good at staying out of trouble. I don't...I don't feel like things are bad ideas until it's already too late to fix them. The echoes take off in one direction, and I follow, and then everything blows up in my face." She remarked. She gave a sad smile for a second then went back to the weapons. She picked up one of the escrima sticks, and rolled it over in her hand.
"As far as the other mutant goes, he wants to live where he is. He know's he is dangerous and his mutation is still growing. He just feels better living on his own and not putting anyone else at risk. He knows a few people from the mansion though. Guess Serena is someone he considers a friend. But maybe with time someone can help him." She shrugged, running a thumb across the wood.
