The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Evelyn expected to feel pain but the blow that knocked her sideways did not feel like it was meant to injure. Her skin still stung as she hit the ground further away, but her dazed mind was startled by the words she heard and the echoes identification to them.
Her sewer monster friend was defending her.
If she had air left in her lungs she would have yelled at him to be careful or something equally unhelpful, but instead she crawled further away, hugging her sides and trying to breathe. The fear traveled through her and made the struggle that much more difficult.

Evelyn couldn't help smiling at Maya, pushing back some of the nervous energy she had and picking up one of the paper plates. She shook her head and put a few pieces of lunch meat and chips on it, glancing back at her parents. The echoes fizzled with the intensity of their gaze.
"My parents are almost impossible to make a good impression with at this point.... I think as long as I'm a mutant and anyone is ok with that they wouldn't approve." she ate a chip and chuckled slightly. "I really don't think I'm that brave. If I was I wouldn't have appeased them for so long... "
It was around that time when one of the waitresses on duty migrated over and offered the two mutants something to drink. Evelyn, with echoes still humming as her parents migrated closer, felt herself nodding and ordering one of the fruity sounding drinks off the list in and almost reflexive way. Watching the waitress drift away she glanced at Maya.
"In hindsite that might be a bad idea....but it sounded really good now..." She mused nibbling a piece of ham.
Evelyn didn't expect to make it to the cab in time. The echoes could hear the pursuit, and they knew she wasn't fast enough. She waited, trying to pick the right moment to duck, then the figure passed her, and she got a full look at the dark silhouette.
She screamed. Memories raced through her mind of another monster that chased her, the crystal clear images bringing pain of the long gone injury and the vivid terror back to the surface. This couldn't happen. It couldn't!
The roar echoes through her mind as her feet skid on the pavement, and she jerked backwards, feeling her feet go out from under her. Training kicked in at the last second and she tucked her body into a roll, somersaulting slightly in a sloppy dodge and barely keeping her feet under her. She tried to keep away from the claws, but the force of her own memories was crippling. She could barely breathe.
As they pulled up to the party, Evelyn felt herself automatically sitting a little straighter and smoothing her skirt again. It a way, her upbringing had been a little like training. She just had to push her nervous energy down, keep a cool head and make the best of an awkward situation. For some reason the party itself was what made her the most nervous. Having her parents find out she was dating a girl half the time wasn't such a big deal to her. That was somewhat of a more normal family disagreement they'd have to get through. She was more focused on the repercussions for asserting herself like this. She was pretty certain her parents wouldn't be pleased.
She pushed open the door, flashed one last smile to Maya, and stepped out. The echoes had already honed in on two very tense looking figures over under the gazebo.
Not pleased seemed like an understatement.
"I think it's more of a 'take you to my past' than necessarily 'my world' at this point... I have a strange feeling my parents aren't going to be inviting me to many of these events in the future." She mused aloud, and offered an arm to Maya. Back straight, head up. Her body language would not be ashamed to be here with Maya. She cared about the mirror-walker, and they could stare or scoff all they wanted.
If only the echoes weren't so loud... It was like hearing a room full of disapproving whispers. As they started across the lawn she had to pull on her battle training to direct the echoes to the buffet table and force them to stay there. She was going to know an aweful lot about what was sitting there by the time they were done with this. Either that, or she was going to have a lot of unwanted information to drown out.
Mrs. Summers broke away from the group, and her steps were sharp and pointed as she moved over to where Evelyn was. Her smile was all too sunny sweet, teeth clenched a bit too tightly as she met her daughter. "Evelyn, dear. I see you've brought a...guest."
"Her name is Maya, and you said I could bring a date. This is my date." Evelyn said firmly. The corner of her mother's mouth twitched slightly, and she ran her hands down the side of her dress.
"I see...Does...Maya, have any ...Is--"
"She's a mutant too. Gender shifter. Dad's looking for you, and Maya and I are going to go politely congratulate the happy couple." Evelyn flashed a quick smile, and steered her companion away from the speechless figure. The sunny smile had completely withered from her face at the word 'mutant', and transformed into an unappealing look of confused horror as the sentence continued. Now she just stood, heels slowly sinking into the grass, trying and failing to put back on her fake smile.
The happy couple accepted the thanks, although there was a trace of confusion in their expressions as they watched Mr. and Mrs. Summer his and argue in the background.
Pleasantries aside, Evelyn migrated towards the buffet table. There were a number of food items set out, from cold cuts to chips and dips, and an open bar wasn't far from that. Evelyn wasn't a drinker, but the more echos she picked up, the more tempting the collection looked. She didn't know what alcohol would do to her powers, but if there was a chance it could shut them up, it was tempting.
"I'd say we're off to a good start..." She mused aloud, glancing over at Maya.
Undercover mission.... Part of her wished that was what it was. Sometimes dealing with all the monsters she encountered around mutants wasn't half as bad as dealing with her family. Or their friends. Their friends were a different sort of creature. All dolled up and fake faced... She squeezed Maya's hand back gratefully.
She didn't know why these people made her feel the way they did. Maybe it was because she grew up with them towering above her, judging her and tilting their noses up to her. She was smarter than them all. She could follow their conversations and study their movements and if she wanted she could have spilled all their dirty secrets out for the world to see. For the most part she had been fairly good at keeping those things to herself growing up. But actions could still sting. Especially when you could never forget them.
Getting to the car, Evelyn slipped into the seat and smoothed out her skirt, chuckling slightly. "The mission? Infiltrate a party of high class stuck up aristocrats, make a statement to a pair of judgmental anti-mutant parents...grab some snacks. I hear they have good food. And if we get bored I can tell you all the dirty little secrets the echoes pick up." She tossed in with a somewhat mischievous smirk.
The door opened, and Evelyn felt a small smile cross her face. She blushed slightly at the compliment, but she nodded back at Maya's own outfit. "You look really good too. Hopefully it's not too much torture for you to wear." She added as an afterthought. She knew Maya wasn't exactly big on dressing up, in fact, she wasn't sure she'd ever seen the mirror-walker in anything particularly feminine. But if nothing else this had been a good excuse for it and it was definitely a different look. But a good one.
As they headed for the front door, Evelyn made a face at Maya, and rolled her eyes at the question. "I'm not sure I'm every ready for these shindigs. But if my parents are going to drag me to them, they're going to have to learn to realize I'm not going to change to make them happy anymore. I'm glad your coming." She looked at the other female, and tried to get the knot out of her gut. She needed the moral support, even if it might create drama.
It took a bit of convincing, but Evelyn managed to talk Mirror into going with her to the wedding. Not that she really wanted to go anyway, but it was for a close friend of her parents and they expected her to be there. Lately they had been bearing down on her about being a proper daughter and not giving them a bad image, yada yada. With the tension growing high she felt it was better not to push things. But that didn't stop her from asking if she could bring a date.
Somehow, she felt fate had planned it so it would be a Maya day.
Oh well, it was just going to make that much more of a statement.
She was dressed in a small white dress with black leggings, which was semi-formal enough she felt it would work. If it didn't, well, her parents could just add it to the list of everything else she did wrong about this. She was grateful she wasn't going alone though. At least with Maya it would be more bearable.
Reaching the mirror-walkers room, she reached out a hand and gently knocked on the door. "Hey, you ready to go?" She called, glancing down at the watch on her hand. They still had plenty of time, but the longer she waited here the bigger the knot in her stomach seemed to get.
The echoes flickered a warning before Evelyn heard a sound, and she felt a cold sensation of fear welling up at their chiming. She tried keeping her eyes on the phone and debated what she should do. She could sense the other figure, their movement so light it would have been nearly impossible without her powers, save for the glowing red eyes off to the side.
She debated running. Running seemed like a very good option at this point...
The little bars on her phone refused to connect. She tucked it in her pocket; it wasn't going to be much good at this point. Then she tried to calm her pulse, and made her choice.
She scrambled back for the cab as fast as she could go, and shot one glance back to look at what the echoes had heard.
Even in the darkness she could make out the intimidating silhouette, and she wished she hadn't turned, but if nothing else, it made her run faster.
Evelyn was going to have a lot of explaining to do when she got home. But in all honesty, this time wandering around in the dark really wasn't her idea. After work she had headed to her apartment to get her mail and sort through a few of the belongings she still had stored there. Then she called a cab before it got too dark and was ready to head back to the mansion. But the vehicle had gotten no further than a block away when it sputtered, died, and stalled on the side of the road.
The sun had already set, and she could hear the foreboding background music kick ing...
The cab driver just said he ran out of gas, and in his rather stereotypical choppy accent declared he'd go get some fuel and come right back. This left the blond haired woman stuck in the dark in the middle of the city, alone with in the dark... She figured she'd give him a few minutes before calling for a different cab. It was only by then she realized she had no cell phone service where she was.
Of all the luck.
Deciding waiting in the dark vehicle was no less desirable, Evelyn pushed open the door and started down the sidewalk, phone up in a feeble attempt to get a signal. The tiny bars wavered and struggled to find their way to the cell phone tower, while Evelyn let the echoes keep watch. It was just silly bad luck. There was nothing to worry about, right?
She walked a little faster and hoped the cell phone would get it's crap together.
"If someone is gifted with a high level of intelligence, are you going to regulate what they do just because they happen to be smarter? If someone is a good painter, are you going to control what they paint? Trying to control someone's natural abilities just seems like it's going too far to me..."
"Do we regulate things like batteries? No. But nuclear reactors? Yes. It's the level of power they have..."
The echoes stopped listening for a moment as the movement behind her drew attention. She didn't look at Lisa, but shrugged a shoulder slightly in acknowledgement. "Each side has a valid point. I think sometimes what makes a conversation interesting is watching from both sides without letting your own personal opinions get involved." She mused aloud. While she was a mutant, and she could understand the desire to be treated 'normal', she also understood that she was not normal. The mutant rights issue was something that was complicated and filled with too much grey to really draw a line.
She had a feeling that her companion didn't feel that way though. Something about the female seemed like she would have a clear line of black and white.
Evelyn could get used to the whole getting kissed thing. Even if it was just on the cheek it had a way of making her spirit lift just a little bit. She was starting to get why people could get cheesy and starry eyed when they dated people. The little spikes of happiness were definitely an upside to it.
>>"I'll work on a training plan..."
Evelyn nodded, glancing back at the weapons rack. All things considered, the training practice hadn't gone so bad. She didn't injure anyone with a weapon at least. Then again, she hadn't really messed with much more than the sai... She had no idea what would have happened if she messed with the wrong weapon. The level of training she needed was still very basic. She figured eventually she'd have to work through some of her skittishness with other weapons, but for now she was content with the sai.
The thoughts flickered and evaporated at the mention of ice cream though "Ice cream actually sounds pretty great about now." She admitted with a smile.
Evelyn glanced up, eyes flickering across his facial expressions and taking a quick inventory of what was written there. This was honestly one of the more...hostile...reactions she had got to her powers. She could read the level of distrust mingled in his expressions, and discomfort that wasn't quite fear, but still uneasy with her abilities. People just didn't like when they thought you could read their minds... Although, what she did was probably worse... A mind reader at least could probably control whether or not they read someone's mind. What she saw was just out there in the open for anyone to pick up.
"I guess in a way it could be...It's my mutation though, so can't really control it..." She remarked and looked back down at her drawing. She was calm and kept it together, but inwardly she was a little bit miffed at his rudeness. Or honesty. Or both. He was being sort of judgmental in her eyes.
Unlike most people Evelyn seemed to hang around lately, Forte didn't seem all too distressed at her getting injured. Not that her nose took any lasting damage, but his response was filled with advice and the echoes didn't pick up a high level of concern as he lifted her hand and checked to make sure she wasn't permanently broken. No blood, probably a good thing. She still was not looking forward to the future playbacks of this. Injuries were the worst sort of memories. "You seem to put a lot of faith into what my echoes can pick up... they aren't exactly full proof...or...completely useful..."
Then he asked what the echoes had started picking up on. Evelyn's cheeked colored and she shook her head. "They....you're thinking...things.... I don't know exactly what but...this is so many types of awkward can't we just go back to the experiment?" She flushed. She felt like it was painful evident even for someone without echoes how awkward she was with situations like these. She rubbed her nose once more then let her hands drift back down to her side.
The echoes flickered towards the pool and watched the way the ripples interacted. They studied the energy content of his powers, and took more notes. Initially, many of these facts mattered little. But in the long run they could be useful perhaps.
Sylar's attempt at humor was unexpected, and drew a laugh from the fair haired mutant as she shook her head. "I'm afraid I'm not much of a detective either. I don't think being nosy alone qualifies you for that position." She felt like she was starting to talk in circles as the night wore on, and her exhausted body was starting to effect her exhausted brain. It was probably about time to get home before she started babbling nonesense. Sleep deprivation was starting to catch up.
"There are some things I think are better left not knowing. What happened, and if you hurt that kid bad, or not, not going to change it. I guess that's just my take on it." She felt like she was being repetitive again. She took a moment to fish under the bathroom sink for a trashbag, then tossed the empty pizza boxes in. She tried to smile reassuringly to Sylar though. "The mansion has a healer, so I'll be ok. It probably looks worse than it is anyway." She remarked. It was sort of nice that he was concerned though, even if his voice didn't give away as much emotions as a normal human.
She did catch the emotions in his next comments though, and shrugged, pushing a stray strand of hair from her face. "Maybe. But maybe you will come back from this. It's hard to really guess. Sometimes you just have to wait and see." She tied the trash bag up, then moved and plopped it by the front door. She'd take care of it once Sylar left, then try to get a cab to head home.
>>"So is that what I gotta expect from a girlfriend with perfect memory?..."
Evelyn smiled for a moment, then shook her head quickly before Maya took it too seriously. "I think you'll be safe. I may have a perfect memory but that also means I can never forget the nice things you do either.I may tease you a little but I only do it because I care." She added. Meanwhile, part of the sentence buzzed slightly in her ears. Girlfriend... MAya had never actually called her her girlfriend before, so that was a first. She tried not to blush at the term.
"We can always take a break from training if you want? Do something else...I don't know. Up to you." She fiddled with the end of her braid and shifted from one foot to the other, the training mat squishing slightly under her heels.
