The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Evelyn wasn't sure quite what sparked her trip to the sewers. Maybe it had been a number of things, if she really looked at it in hindsight. There had been an attack on the museum a while back in which paintings had come to life, and subsequently got destroyed when they tried to stop the attacker. The somewhat dark anger Evelyn felt reminded her of some of her more...feral, friends, and she found herself somewhat wanting their presence to help deal with the emotions she felt about that event. Then there were other chaotic events after that fact... A trip with her boyfriend to contact his ninja assassin mother that ended in a fight she did surprisingly well in, a convenience store heist that did go quite so well. Then an interesting encounter with a memory eraser. Combined, there were emotions she struggled to deal with, and the only person she thought might understand happened to live under the streets of New York.
At least, he had a while back...
Evelyn should have known something was wrong as soon as she stepped in the tunnels, but her thoughts were still buzzing with thoughts. Would Sylar even care about things like emotions, and morals, and all the dumb things she was wondering? Would he be mad at her for coming down her in the first place? It was dumb, but each fight she faced, she sort of missed her broodier, darker friend. Sylar was uniquely neutral in many ways, his more primal nature giving him an outsiders viewpoint on situations. She was a good guy, trying to help people, but then in fights she felt like there was something not so good lurking under the surface. Sylar would know how that felt, and she felt like maybe she could admit it more to him than maybe Mirror. Would Mirror freak out if he knew she considered killing someone? Maybe.. Sam might not, but she hadn't seem Sam in forever... the thoughts continued to swim as she fiddled with the tin-foil and the dish in hand.
It wasn't like she was unarmed this time: her sai were strapped back on her back, and she kept the lasagna she brought under one arm just in case. And she had a small lantern in the other hand: better light than a flashlight. This time, she felt ready in case something happened. Maybe he would at least listen while he ate? It was dumb... she was being dumb... If nothing else maybe she could at least hang out and keep him company right?
By the time the echoes noted the new presence, the giant dropped from the ceiling, and she let out a rather terrified scream as she scrambled backwards. The dish shattered against the ground as she yanked her sai free, barely catching one of his large claws with the weapon before it hit her face. The force still slammed her hand back into her shoulder, and she stumbled back into the wall struggling to take in what the creature was. Even in the lantern light, it was just a musclely blur, claws flashing as she rolled out of the way and took a swipe at a leg.
The metal clanged as if she hit a rock, and a claw flashed at her leg. She felt a sting but there was no time to assess the damage as teeth narrowly missed her head. Rolling away, bringing both sai into a block, the claw hit metal with a clang that send vibrations up her arm. This creature, whatever it was, was strong.
And it most certainly was not the sewer mutant she was hoping to find...

Evelyn wasn't sure what forgetting would feel like, but if she remembered the experience, she might not have tried it ever again. For some people she imagined it might have felt like a bath, like someone washing something away, it disappearing in the darkness. But for Evelyn, it was like having someone reach in, and try to tear something from her mind.
Forget
Someone was rummaging through her memories, opening files, yanking papers free. The echoes scrambled to find what was missing, flooded to the memories, tried to sort out what was happening. Memories sparked, pain hit nerves, then the images disappeared. Each instance was cleanly cut, sliced, and removed, while Evelyn's powers protested in her mind.
Forget every false death.
Echoes looked at the gaps, forgot the gaps, scrambled then stilled. Playbacks flicked like scratched disks, skipping, skipping, then slowly remembering how to play.
Forget me.
The echoes stared at the woman, with a somewhat familiar face. She had seen her somewhere in New York, probably another person passing by, but no one familiar enough to note. She didn't think of it long as a dizzying sensation settled over her mind. Playbacks jumped to life unbidden, and she put her head in her hand. Her phone pinged and she glanced down at it with blurry vision. It was from Jensen. She didn't really remember texting him though...
Will be there soon. Meet by the zoo? She glanced across the park. The zoo seemed like a long way away. With the rush of playbacks she couldn't quite remember why she was sitting here, or who the woman with the soda was. She was tempted to ask, then another playback flickered past and the thought was lost in images of the cookie monster in Central Park.

Paintings fell, canvas and frames littering the ground like blood splatters on a battle field. As Forte destroyed the last art piece, her heart turned, stomach twisted, and she watched helplessly from where she stood. Bone broke, and the scream echoed through the room. She could hear the pain, the echoes analyzing the break, the injury, sparking her own memories of pain in her mind.
Her head spun and she put a hand against the wall. More broken sounds, more pain... Her insides rearranged themselves, her nausea brought by the very real flickers of pain carried by her playbacks. He damaged paintings, true, but the echoes analyzed the other sounds moving through the museum. Children crying for parents, injured patrons calling for help. Here the man who caused it asked for mercy. Where had his mercy been when he destroyed centuries of work, priceless paintings? Where had his mercy been when he hurt patrons and staff alike? Humans, mutants, all just victims in his path. Forte turned, and asked for her to make the call.
She stared at the man, her expression cold. The echoes read the fear across his face. For a moment, her heart hardened, and she started to let the bitterness get control. Then the echoes continued talking, reading off more of his story. Rejected by people, persecuted for who he was. Alone, struggling for someone to notice, someone to help... She knew mutants like that, mutants who could easily go bad, easily hurt people. What should she do? What should she say?
Everyone had good or bad, but what was done here was still unforgivable. It was personal. And that twinge of emotional pain made her choice.
"Let him breathe and let the cops have him.." She finally said, and turned her back as the man sighed. She gave one more glance over her shoulder, darkness in her eyes that caused the sigh to turn into a choke in his throat. "But should he ever step foot in this museum again, I will not hesitate to make a call to change my mind." There was no chance he would mistaken her mercy for weakness. The anger that still burned in her expression was far from being merciful, but it was just short of being a killer.

A smile, and an out. While Evelyn enjoyed the company, she was somewhat grateful for the chance to drift away. Maybe with time she'd be able to control her powers more to at least tolerate the conversation, but for the time being, it might be safer to admire the music from a distance.
>>"Any requests?"
"Anything upbeat would be welcome traveling music, but so long as it's something you enjoy." She dropped a bill into the violin case, then gave a smile as she took a step back. "I'll let you get back to your work, but I'll be sure to enjoy the music as I go. It certainly makes the commute more enjoyable." Once Seyta went back to playing, Evelyn politely took her leave, wandering back the way she had come and disappearing into the crowd. Later, when Seyta would go to look at her 'spoils' from the day, she would find the money Evelyn had thrown in. What looked like a 10 on the outside would turn out to be a $100.
Some musicians played in fine halls, but Evelyn did have an appreciation for the simple music that traveled through the subways.

Evelyn nodded once for the harness idea, and once more for the price. While number like that would make some people hide their paychecks in terror, the upper-class mutant expected nothing less when it came to a custom pet. In fact, it probably could have been worse. While her relationship with her parents was still in the dumps, they were still rather careless about watching their funds, so a few K wasn't so hard to sneak away...
The fuzzy face nuzzling her hand demanded an answer. Evelyn smiled. "Well, I guess it's just a matter of getting the payment to you then. I think Frost turned out lovely. You did a great job." Name set, as was Evelyn's choice. So, a foxsquirrel could be a little bit of a handful. But if she kept it in her room, it would be fine, right? Right.

String. Evelyn glanced at it, then at the foxsquirrel who was eyeballing the big pillow on the armchair. She was half tempted to grab the string, then the echoes mentally chimed in with scenarios of the squirrel only half reaching the chair and crashing into the ground. She stepped closer to the chair just in case. "I'm sure I get can something together. Heck, I could probably custom order something..." A custom order harness wouldn't be bad. Better than the string, in her mind. She ran her hand across the little animal's head, and the name-less squirrel was temporarily distracted by the petting.
"So, I guess the big question is, what would I owe you for her?" It was hard not to blurt out a name right away, but until the deal was sealed, it didn't feel right naming the little critter. As attached as she was getting, she was trying her best not to dive right in. It was hard to think of that as the foxsquirrel made itself comfortable in her arms. It was so adorable....

Evelyn mentally went through the food options, and nodded thoughtfully. Meat was a bit more expensive than something like cat food, but she couldn't imagine trying to feet the little critter something dry and tasteless like that. At least, that was her thinking. Fish wasn't so hard to get, and while the mansion didn't keep steaks stocked, she could probably get decent food for the little animal without worrying too much about someone eating it all.
"Sounds doable... What about beds and stuff like that? Are we more along the lines of sugar gliders or something with nesting space, or like a cat or a dog where they sort of make themselves comfortable?" Claws in the hair, claws were definitely tangling in the hair... Evelyn carefully freed the little animal and pulled her back into her arms. Big eyes stared up at her momentarily before she started looking back around for a better perch. Evelyn watched carefully in case she made a jump for the nearest armchair.

As Evelyn took the little creature, two thoughts raced through her mind. One, she was pretty sure it was going to be almost impossible to keep the foxsquirrel out of trouble. If she escaped Evelyn's room, she was most likely going to chew, claw up, or eat something she shouldn't, as evident by the way she scurried across Evelyn's shoulders and immediately burrowed into her hair. Tiny claws latched on for support as wide eyes took in everything around her.
The second, most important thought, was there was no way Evelyn could get rid of the little creature now. The claws might as well have been clinging to Evelyn's heart, because as soon as she got the little foxsquirrel into her arms, she was sold. "She really is beautiful." Evelyn said with a smile. Her brain was already thinking of what she'd need to buy to properly keep a foxsquirrel. Food... that would be hard to come up with. "So, what would she eat, anyway?" She said quickly before her brain lost track of that thought. A wet nose sniffed her ear.

Nice to meet you... There was something almost forced in his words, still something so resistant. She didn't know him, had no right to judge him, read him, but she could see it there: all the little threads of the past weaving him into who he was. His response when she spoke of her parents, something he probably didn't have, or maybe he did just had a bad relationship with them. His envy of the ice skaters, his mixed emotions about people. He was another of those teens, on the borderline, looking for something better, plagued by doubt, distrust. That wasn't something that could be mended or repaired easily. When you cut a hole in a knitted sweater, it was a race to stop it from unraveling. It couldn't be sewed like a normal sweater, each stitch had to be caught, reconnected, salvaged. He was somewhere between point a and b. Somewhere between unraveling and pulling himself together. Something in the defiance of his attitude made her pretty certain he'd be ok though. He was more prepared for this than she had ever been.
"If I've learned anything this past year, is being able to take care of yourself, and letting people help don't always have to be in opposition." It was the last gesture she'd make, and she started towards the sidewalk. She turned as she left though, and flashed one last smile. "Keep that in mind when Santa attacks Time Square this Christmas!" She moved towards the street to flag a cab for home. She was pretty sure she'd see that kid again sometime. The echoes were betting on it.

Evelyn smiled sadly, and nodded. The couple fell, they laughed. It was cute, and also sad. Watching from a distance, it was like a movie. But it was a movie she felt she was missing part of.
While she had Mirror, they really weren't like that. At least, not at this point in their relationship. Some people were in a relationship, and they were each other's everything. Living, breathing, working, laughing. With Mirror, they were dating, but they were still two people. If they didn't see each other day, it wasn't the end of the world. They went months without having an actual date, spending more time fighting, working, or training. That came with the whole x-men territory though.
She wasn't sure what it was like to have a romance. To be in that sort of love. The echoes analyzed: they looked at relationships as math equations, logical, illogical. It was hard to be frivolous with that sort of thinking sometimes. There were moments though... a bad dream, and Mirror there to comfort. A jealous argument, then kissing and making up. She was still somewhat envious though. She had money, they had this innocent happiness... that was something worth desiring more.
A glance at Chad revealed his own emotions. They flickered across his face like her own cycled through hers. She gave a small smile and brushed the snow from her pants. "You'd be surprised how many business men and women in this city aren't as rich as those two. I've seen the upper class, been there. I had snobby parents that make me queasy looking back. But that type of contentment, and that type of joy, you can't find that in any of these buildings. The echoes see a lot, they pick apart a lot of things for me. Make me feel like there isn't real good in the world, because everyone has something to hide, something wrong with them. Every once and awhile, they find something they can't quite pick apart." She shook her head, and finally pushed herself to her feet. With the winter weather daylight would be fading before long, even though it felt like it was still the middle of the day. She got into enough trouble heading home after day. It was probably best to avoid an adventure like that today.
"It's going to be a cold winter. You don't have to stay there, but seriously, if you ever want a free meal and some time out of the cold, don't be afraid to swing by the mansion. Most of us aren't great cooks, but some of us know how to order great take out." She smiled slightly to take away some of the sad vibes, and brushed the last of the snow from her jacket. "Oh, I'm Evelyn by the way. In case, you know, you're into those formalities and names and things."

Evelyn wasn't really sure how the technicalities of identifying sex of sterile fox squirrels worked, but considering she was dating a gender shifter, she was pretty used to 'gender' being a more complicated topic. It didn't matter much in the end. If she called it a she and it was a he, well, sorry, the end. The name she had in mind was fairly neutral anyway. Her brain mentally started thinking through her room and whether or not she should be hiding her art supplies....
"Well, hopefully she wouldn't get into too much. I can handle some of my stuff being terrorized, but if some kids stuff gets ruined I'd have a lot of explaining to do. Can I hold her?" She trailed off, looking wistfully at the little creature. The inventory of her room stalled out as she stared at it's little eyes. Distracted. It was cute an adorable and it could totally destroy the mansion...

There were reasons Evelyn was supposed to be questioning getting a foxsquirrel at this point in her life, but try as she might, she couldn't quite think of them as she unlocked the gate. The little creature's curiosity instantly appealed to her, and the looks, well, he nailed those spot on. Not quite as white as her hair, but certainly pale enough to fit into her little world.
"Well, hopefully the mansion would work for...her?... We have a few other animals here, but it would spend most it's time in my room." She explained, leading the way. Once they reached the main building she pushed open the door and slithered back into the warmth. Much better than standing out in the cold. She glanced back at the little animal again, nervous and excited to get a chance to hold her. Would it like her? Would it hate her? The echoes were trying to piece together it's personality just by watching. It didn't seem vicious, so that was a good thing...

Apparently the lecture part of the training session was ending, and Evelyn scrambled backwards as the earth jolted. A wave of earth rose in front of her, suspicions about earth control at least somewhat confirmed, and Evelyn stumbled, backpedaling towards the nearest thing that wasn't earth: the tree. That had been the echoes idea, at least. When fighting something elemental, it was always good to find footing somewhere something couldn't move, spin, splinter, cave in around you or something equally terrifying. If you met someone who could control water, you wouldn't go swimming, right? Right.
She stumbled, scrambled, and darted for the tree. She was pretty sure the earth yelled after her. Earth monsters...why not? CS had his own ice clone things. Darn elementals and their freaky control of the frickin WORLD.
Taking the last few strides at more of a jump, Evelyn caught the low branch of the tree and swung herself up. She wasn't much a tree climber when she was a kid, but a few Danger Room sessions, and she learned fast. The key was treating everything like it could kill you, because most of the time, it could. Life or death had a way of making you jump just a little bit and she higher. Off the earth, accomplished. Step two... Well, she hadn't quite thought that face. She could throw a pinecone at it... or...something.

Evelyn didn't forget things. At least, she was pretty sure she didn't. Her mutation meant she wasn't supposed to anyway, but this one thing, this particular thing, she was pretty sure she forgot. Maybe she just misplaced that memory, left it on the wayside. Put it in the wrong metal box and left it there for too long, collecting dust. It was a small, insignificant detail that probably shouldn't have mattered, but in the long run, it did.
She had ordered a foxsquirrel. That seemed like something she should have been more aware of...
The phonecall took her by surprise, and she quickly gave Ryan the address of where he could meet her. She could remember the details of the order now that she was thinking about, and she was both nervous and excited about the prospect. As close to white as possible, squirrel sized, loyal... She never had a pet, and back when she lived in her apartment alone, she thought something small would be nice to keep her entertained. Now that she was at the mansion, though, she was somewhat more hesitant. Would it do well here? Would one of the dogs try to eat it? Would it demolish the kitchen?
Could she pay for it? That... that was another important item to take care of...
After paying for some memory removal, hiring an assassin on her parents credit card, and getting Christmas gifts, her funds were on the low side. If she was remembering the cost correctly, she still had enough on one of her credit cards, but it would be eating at the mansion and no fancy restaurants or clothes for awhile if she did. The fox squirrel had to be perfect to be worth it.
She met the guy at the gate and first saw the fuzzy little creature. It was all she could do not to gush like a school girl and maintain her professional attitude. "Sorry for dragging you out this far! I hope this order hasn't been too much trouble for you..." The ears of the foxsquirrel perked up slightly, and Evelyn tried not to stare.

So, on a level of curious, while the X-men go into hiding and such, do you think any sort of 'good guys' would turn bad in that power shift? Or even appear to go bad. Because that's another twist that could be interesting. I know there are quite a few neutral leaning characters, that would be an interesting time for them to explore a more 'evil' side for awhile.
