The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Agnes had urged Gregory to get off of the table. Everyone around them was staring and as much as she understood his words about accepting herself, about enjoying the person that she was, she simply was not ready for that kind of attention just yet. She just barely got over her scars being healed and there was still a lot of baby steps that she needed to take on the path to loving herself. She was not the type of girl that enjoyed just being hurled off into the deep end.
But as she tried to urged him down, the look that Gregory got (if she was even interpreting it correctly) looked a little disappointed. Maybe he was expecting more from her. Maybe he thought his inspirational words would have made the young runaway shake off her usual fears and turn her into some braver person.
To Agnes, though, they were just words from one moment in time. She still had a whole lifetime of mental scars to get past. That was why she tried to bring him down. But the giant roach was not taking to her pleads…
>> "Look at them, Agnes... Look around you…You have two options... You must either teach yourself to hate them, or let them teach you to hate yourself."
Agnes paused, feeling his grip tighten a little on her hand. Her eyes began to droop a little in sadness as she really and truly let his words sink into her head. Was she really doing that? Was she really so messed up that she was allowing perfect strangers to judge her? Agnes, when she lived on the streets, had grown callous and used to the judgmental stares but she always believed that she was at least a little better than all of them. After all, she lived among everything that they threw away and it was easy to see that every person who lived in this city had their secrets that they were desperate to hide. She was at least honest about herself.
Yet, ever since she went to the mansion, Agnes whole outlook on life had changed. She was more understanding, more sweet, and yet she allowed the gawks and glares of people to get to her even more now. Maybe…maybe she really was not learning her lessons in accepting herself. Maybe…
Hey…why is his hand so tight? Agnes thought as she was snapped from her thoughts and looked down to Gregory’s hand on her’s. It squeezed tighter. Not enough to hurt her but when Agnes tried to pull away, she found that she was unable to do so.
“Hey, what’re you--?” she mumbled as she tried to break away.
>> "What is it to be normal? To sit and sip your coffee without second glance? To belong, and not stand out in any way? I know the answer to that question. To be normal is to be frightfully boring. Good day!"
He addressed both the crowd and herself. But before Agnes could take the last of his words to heart, she suddenly felt the world vanish beneath her feet. With a gasp of surprised, Agnes suddenly was weightless as she was lifted up and hoisted onto the hard, exoskeleton covered shoulders of the giant roach.
“Hey!! Put me down!!!” Agnes screamed. “Gregory!! STOP!!”
But her words fell on deaf ears. Before she knew it, she was being carried out of the coffee house and started her own reenactment of a classic monster movie. She struggled as she looked down and noticed that they were beginning to ascend the side of a building. Gregory was carrying her up the side of a building!! Her heart beat rapidly as she clung onto her kidnapper and shut her eyes tight. But her panic was soon picked up upon by couple of her minions that had clung onto her clothing before she was stolen away.
These smaller roaches fell off her clothes and began to skitter over the much larger roach, angry, obviously, that their queen was in danger.
Agnes, the whole time, could only squeeze her eyes shut as she held on tight, not wanting to fall. “What are you doing!? Let me down!”
Agnes smirked as Rebecca kissed her once more. She was going to try her best to not be too much of a distraction. The young runaway liked to play around, but she knew when to be serious. This was Rebecca’s workplace, after all. It simply was not right for her to be bothering her while she was at work and trying to earn her living. So, Agnes vowed that she would leave her alone and busy herself with glancing through comics and looking through their backlog for comics that she was missing.
With a jingle of the door they had once again returned to the interior of the comic shop where Agnes immediately spied the first thing that she really did not want to see at the moment. That busty chested, blonde haired woman had turned from a group of gentlemen and immediately caught sight of Rebecca.
Now, Agnes really was not scared of losing Rebecca to that girl, Lexi. But what she was more irritated by was that she really couldn’t tell if the woman was being playful, serious, or she was just a messing with them? Rebecca said she was harmless and Agnes really hoped so. The last thing she wanted was to get in a fight with someone because they were just joking around.
But as these thoughts raced through her head, she steeled herself up as Lexi dashed over, and squeezed Rebecca by the arms.
>> "I'm so glad you're back! We have a little sale for you. Those boys are big fans of Spectacular Girl…and I may have mentioned that our Spectacular Girl learned how to control metal."
>> "LEXI! Hoo did tha even come up!?"
>> "That's not important now. There's a huge tip in it if the cute redhead can make some coins dance, so get going!"
>> "Ah... bit, Agnes! Ah cannae--"
>> "Don't you worry; what kind of Ascendant Woman would I be if I didn't help out my bestie, Spectacular Girl? I'll keep an eye on this little pixie for you."
>> "Um, okay, Ah gue--"
And with that, Rebecca had left her to go do her job. But it was obvious that she did not want to leave Agnes alone with Ascendant Woman. Unfortunately a combination of her job duties and the bossiness of Lexi had crumbled Rebecca’s resolve so that she had to run off to do her job. Agnes gave her a meek wave goodbye and tried to keep a brave face. She would just take her leave from Lexi and go peruse some of the shop’s comi—
>> "Great! So, Agnes, right? Sorry I took you away from cutesy girlfriend time."
Agnes winced! She had almost been able to make it away from the boisterous blonde. But Lexi had turned her attentions on Agnes so the runaway put on her mask of friendliness. She really hoped that the blonde was only joking before or she was going to have to punch her…
“It’s…okay. She working. I understand,” Agnes said with an nod. “I’m just, you know, going to go over there…” she had started to say and made a move to head towards the a random part of the shop. A glance at the woman eyeing her, though, made her wings inadvertently flutter. She really, really hated how easy it was to tell that she was nervous. She needed to get those wings under control.
>> "So those really are wings-- I'm jealous…They look kinda like bug wings... hey, have you ever read Larva Girl? If so, I've got something to show you!"
Agnes blinked and had nodded to say that she did read the comic book Larva girl when suddenly she was seized by the arm. With a gasp, and a tiny plead of a “help me!” look towards Rebecca (who sadly had her back turned JUST at that moment), Agnes was dragged away to a separate part of the shop under the busty blonde’s guide.
The look on Rebecca’s face was priceless and it made the young runaway want to fall over into a fit of giggles. It really was cute to see her girlfriend so astonished. And though she had never met this man, from how Rebecca described him, she could definitely imagine him fainting. But then also probably throwing a fit and blaming it on Agnes! Well, she couldn’t be too sure about that last part but it seemed like it was definitely possible.
But then her little minx grinned and decided to throw in a joke of her own…
>> "Maybe we can jist bring Lexi along; Ah'm sure ye'll seem like a right angel next tae her."
Agnes rolled her eyes but she couldn’t help the smirk that appeared on her face. God, just the idea of that brash, busty blonde, amongst the family of the one that she loved, she could feel her brain trying to implode. Then the wink and giggle that followed made the runaway grin in return. It was funny, but she was SO going to get Rebecca for that later. The second she got an opportunity, she was going to tickle. And she was not going to stop tickling until her face turned as red as her hair.
But, she would bide her time until there and just chuckled along. She was still extremely nervous about the whole thing but maybe the trip would indeed turn out well. Agnes had never been out of the country before. Hell, she had never even been out of the city! This would definitely be interesting.
Standing with her sweet girlfriend, Agnes sighed as she squeezed her hand.
>> "Ah hae tae get back tae work, dornt Ah?"
She smiled sweetly as she leaned up and kissed her softly on the forehead.
“Yeah, if you want to, you know, keep your job and make the big bucks,” she said with a sigh. “How about I hang with you for a bit and then walk you home?” she grinned. “I need to keep rebuilding my collection anyways , besides” she stated with a slightly devilish grin. “I get to hang around and see you in costume a bit more.”
Agnes sighed gently began to pet the roach that sat on the palm of her hand. They really were quite docile around her. Once they were granted the privilege of sitting upon her skin, Agnes usually shooed them away. But because she was getting far more used to them, she allowed them to sit comfortable on her hand. In doing so, they were calm and did not skitter all over her as most people would fear they would. The young insect hive was not as creeped out as she used to be by them.
But staring up at that large, curiously eyed roach, she could only wonder what the effect was that she was having on him. She knew how smaller, every day insects reacted, but what exactly was he feeling? It was odd meeting a creature that was affected by her abilities and could talk as well. Maybe she could ask him questions and get to know what it was like?
Yet, before she could get too far in those thoughts she paused when she noticed that Gregory was taking a rather…dramatic pose.
>> "My dear, if you spend all day wondering what others think about you, you will never be able to appreciate yourself. If they truly see it right to judge you for how you look, they clearly aren't worth bothering yourself over."
Agnes blushed a little. It was an argument that she had heard many times before. Gina, Jasmine, Rebecca, all of them had said similar things. But Agnes, unfortunately, could be rather stubborn. She nodded and started to open her mouth to say that “yes, she understood that” but she never got a chance to actually say it.
Instead Gregory suddenly made a spectacle of himself. He climbed up onto a table and, despite the awkwardness of the situation, he looked rather regal; well, as regal as a giant cockroach could get. As he did so, Agnes actually giggled but peered left and right as people began to point and gasp in horror at the giant bug. Instead, the runaway began to feel a little self conscious since they were probably assuming that the oddly skinned girl was with the giant roach. Mutants stick together, after all, right?
>> "Do you think the world responds well to me? Look at me, though... I am content. You are a work of art; I encourage you to show yourself off."
Standing there, her skin feeling hot from the praise that he was pouring all over her, Agnes wished that he would calm down. His words had an encouraging ring of truth to them but far too much attention was being drawn to her. Far more attention than she cared for at all.
Then she eyed the hand that was being offered to her. He was trying, really trying to get through to her…and it almost worked. She had reached up, actually pulled in a little by his words. But just as her fingers grazed his hand, she stopped herself. The eyes of the other patrons of the coffee shop were drilling holes into the back of her sweatshirt. She could practically hear their judgments that rattled around in their skulls.
Her fear getting the best of her, Agnes gripped his hand but attempted to pull him down.
“Gregory, come on, stop it,” she whispered as she felt the heat from all those stares. She wanted it over with now. “Get down, people are staring…”
Agnes was obviously nervous. And the point was not lost upon Rebecca. As the young runaway stood there, staring off to the side, trying to wrap her head around the possibility of meeting her girlfriend’s parents, she was quickly becoming aware that Rebecca was watching her. She raised her gaze and instantly she began to feel just a little ashamed. This was something important to her girlfriend and all Agnes could think about was herself. But still the prospect was rather terrifying.
Her eyes locking onto Rebecca’s, she paused as she watched her for a moment. How could she say no to her? Despite her fear, she should have known better than that.
Agnes then watched as Rebecca flagged down one of her fellow, costumed workers. Agnes shyly nodded to her.
>> "Lil-- we, Venus, can you take the register off my hands for five minutes?"
After the girl agreed, Agnes was taken by the hand and slowly led outside of the comic shop. The bright glare of the sunlight, as compared to the dully lit interior of the shop, disorientated Agnes a tiny bit. But thanks to Rebecca’s guidance she soon found herself sitting next to her sweet redhead on a bench just outside the comic store. She sighed as she looked at that sweet face. Just once glance and she knew that no matter what, she was going to be doing exactly everything that Rebecca had said.
>> "Ah dornt want ye worrying 'bout my parents. Mah ma's totally harmless, and my Pa... well, mah Ma is harmless."
Agnes stiffened up a little at the sound of that. Apparently she had something to fear from her father? Of course she would! Rebecca was probably his little princess and here Agnes came along and changed that entire dynamic over night!
But her scattered and terrified thoughts slowly began to wane as she saw the tenderness in her girlfriend’s eyes and the sweetness of her touch. She took a calming breath as she forced herself to look closely at her love interest.
>> "Ye treat me better than a princess. They'll love ye…Pa might scare ye.”
Agnes whimpered a little at the prospect of being terrified by Rebecca’s father. Hadn’t she been scared by parental figures enough in her lifetime? But the runaway knew that she did not need to have the same worries as she had when she had to deal with her parents. Rebecca raved about her parents so much that it actually made Agnes a little jealous. And now she was being offered a chance to meet them. She knew, deep down, that she shouldn’t pass it up.
She sighed as she Rebecca cuddled up close her and she felt her hand gently lying on her lap. Reaching down she carefully placed her own hand over Rebecca’s and sighed. She really, really needed to get in control of her nerves.
>> "They'll be nice coz they'll knoo Ah care aboot ye, so dornt worry so much…It'd make me happy to take th' best part of America back with me tae Scootland."
Rebecca simply always had the right words on hand to just melt the young runaway’s heart. The kiss warmed her cheek and Agnes leaned down to kiss the top of Rebecca’s head, well the blonde wig anyways. But she finally nodded.
“O-Okay…I’ll go…” she promised. Then she grinned as she ran her fingers through the wig. “But only if you wear this since I’m sure it’ll scare the them enough to distract them from me.” she added with a light chuckle.
>> "Well, Ah was nervoos at first. Ma figured something was wrong coz, well, Ah was crying…Ah was sae surprised, but ma was fine wi' it. Sh' even had words wi' my pa an' he's... well, he's taking it slow, but he still loves me."
Agnes smiled, happily. Ever since she had Rebecca had first decided to start this relationship, she had been curious as to how that conversation would go. After all, this was all new for Rebecca, and therefore had to be new for her parents. She wondered how things were going to go when they were finally told that their daughter was dating another young woman.
But from the looks on Rebecca’s face, it seemed as if everything was going extremely well. Her mother was fine with it, her dad was going to come around and no matter what, he still loved his little girl. Agnes was so happy to hear this from her sweet girlfriend, but she could not help the tiniest pang of jealousy that had resided in her heart. That was a feeling and a conversation that she would never experience with her own parents. People who were supposed to protect her, to make her feel loved, and appreciated, had instead dedicated their lives to trying to end her for being different.
Rebecca would always have the experiences of a loving family to carry with her for the rest of her life. For Agnes, it was only the fear of God, fire and brimstone that she would always remember.
Still though, she smiled for Rebecca. She leaned over, patted her arm softly and gently in appreciation of her.
“That is so good. I’m happy to hear it went well.”
>> "They even... they said they missed me. They want me tae visit over th' summer..."
Agnes nodded. She had been anticipating that. After all, Rebecca was over here in the states so that she could be in school and learn to use her powers. It was inevitable that her parents would want to see her again. It would hurt, to be away from Rebecca for so long, but Agnes knew that it was necessary. She would put on a brave face to—
>> "An' they want me tae take ye with me tae meet them."
Bliiiiiiiink. Wha?
Dumbfounded, Agnes simply stood there as she watched Rebecca with a confused expression. She really did not just hear her correctly, right? Why on earth would her parents want to actually meet her? It was not like Agnes was anything special (just the girl that is dating their teenage daughter!). The more she thought about it, the more it made sense that they would indeed actually meet her. After all, they were good and caring parents. Of course they would want to get to know, or interrogate, the young woman that was dating their child.
But the thought of going through this immediately made the young runaway a little nervous. She had never met Rhythm’s parents, Jasmine’s already knew that she was a lesbian, but Rebecca’s parents were going to be an entirely different ballgame.
Shyly the runaway averted her gaze, unsure of really how to proceed with this. Was she really being invited to go to Scotland? To meet her girlfriend’s parents for the first time? The whole proposition was utterly terrifying.
Agnes, meekly, turned her eyes back onto Rebecca and struggled to find her voice.
“W-Wow….r-r-really? I mean…wow….” she managed to stammer. “I…I don’t know, Rebecca. I mean…I…what if…they don’t like me?”
>> "Yeah, you've got quite the cute girly here. When she started here, she used to be so shy! Look at her now: the sexiest little Spectacular Girl I've ever seen."
Agnes smiled a little shyly. The truth of the matter was that she was a little conflicted right now. She whole heartedly agreed, Rebecca did look rather…sexy in her cosplay costume. But, honestly, it was a statement that she really did not want to hear from someone else. Agnes did have a bit of jealousy about her, but it was not to some crazed level. But, after everything that had happened just to bring the two of them together, yeah, like hell would she easily give a pretty, smart, and sweet girl like Rebecca up.
>> "Yeah, yeah. Behave, Lex."
>> “Oh, you don't want to see me when I'm misbehaving. I'll be good. I should get to work-- you're not the only eye candy who can peddle comics."
“Again, nice to meet you,” Agnes said as she watched the woman suddenly leap over the counter.
Agnes just marveled at the girl. Not in lust or in irritation, but simply watched the woman with a confused air. She really did seem over the top, to the point that Agnes really did not know how to react around her. Was she just kidding, or was she someone that the runaway needed to keep an eye on? Not that Agnes figured that Rebecca would leave her for this young woman. No, she didn’t think that for a second. But it was always better to be safe than sorry.
But the runaway betrayed none of these feelings. Instead she still smiled, she still watched, and she kept a close eye on her.
Funny, considering that she wanted to keep a close look on her, she should have seen the hug coming a mile away. Unfortunately Agnes was caught far too off guard to be able to. Suddenly she squeaked as strong arms wrapped around her and the runaway was caught in a hug. Wide eyed, she really didn’t know how to respond except over than to remain completely and utterly still. After a second, apparently that worked because Lexi released her.
>> "Be sure to treat our Becks right, Agnes. If you don't, I could always use a shy little plaything."
Mouth gapped, Agnes watched as the woman sauntered away to help one of the customers. OH how she would have loved to simply roll up her sleeves and go after the woman. But she really was still confused as to whether that comment was serious or not. The woman did seemed to be rather obnoxious but not to a level that required a beat down. She was simply being…eccentric. Still though, that was rather inappropriate and it caused the young insect queen to narrow her eyes…
>> . "Dornt mind her... Lexi is, well, sorta obnoxious. Bit she's nice, an' she's harmless…Well, Ah'm pretty sure she's harmless."
Agnes sighed. “She better be,” she responded with a small huff. But, she was not going to let this Lexi steal her time away with her girl. She came here to support her and to see her so the least she deserved was her undivided attention.
>> "Oh! Ah almost forgot-- Ah called my ma, and told her... well, about you."
Bliiiiiink! What? Agnes was at a loss as to what to say to that. Rebecca had spoken to her mother and just revealed her relationship to her? Agnes would have thought that the young Scot would have given her some warning or a head’s up at least, but apparently she was just wanted to dive in and get it taken care of. Agnes really didn’t know how to wrap her mind around that. She felt like she should have been there when Rebecca did it, just for support. But it seemed like her sweet girlfriend was able to handle it just fine.
A little fearful as to the outcome, she watched Rebecca carefully.
“H-How did it go?” she cautioned to ask. “Everything…you know…okay?”
>> "Yeah, Ah understand. Especially fer me, maybe Ah jist dornt have a set type."
Agnes nodded as she sighed and just tried to make it through this conversation. She really did not want to make Rebecca feel like she did not want to cooperate. After all, she had promised her that she was going to be there for her during this tough time. And this was indeed going to be a tough time for Rebecca. She had a lot of figure out on her own. Unfortunately, as much as Agnes wanted to help, she really was not the best choice in helping her find answers. She cared for Rebecca deeply but that did not mean she knew how to read what the girl’s interest in others was.
Still blushing as she tried to look away from the rest of the scantily clad women, Agnes guessed that her girlfriend must have picked up on her feelings. Leaning in close, Rebecca whispered in a very soothing manner.
>> “Ah hope ye arenae worried or anything... Ah mean, jist coz Ah might like Miley's curves or Lexi's, er, assets...Ah find ye cuter than any other girl…Yoo're my sexy little sylph."
Agnes bowed her head but smiled a little shyly. She was thankful for Rebecca’s assurances. Deep down, she really did not believe that Rebecca would just leave her for someone else, not after everything that they had gone through together in the past months. But there was still that twinge of anxiety. A lot of girl’s were prettier than her, Agnes knew that. She really was not anything special.
But, nonetheless, it was nice to hear such words from someone she held so close to her heart.
Unfortunately, before they could get too lovey-dovey, their moment was rudely interrupted when a certain individual decided to take advantage of Rebecca’s exposed posterior.
SMAACK!
Agnes blinked and straightened up as she turned to look at the interloper. At first she did not recognize her…maybe that was because she only caught a scarce glance at her face. Unfortunately the woman had certain…assets that tended to draw the eye. Not that she found features like that particularly attractive, it was simply, well, they were really hard to miss. Seriously, it was as if they had their own gravitational pull and Agnes had to force herself to make eye-to-eye contact with the woman who had accosted her sweet Rebecca.
>> "Lexi!"
>> "Yeah, yeah, sorry…Is this that girly-friend you keep yammering about?"
Judging by the costume, Agnes could only assume that she had to be another of Rebecca’s co-workers. This one was obviously more boisterous than the others. Agnes was really unsure how she felt about that but he expression show nothing of the scrutinizing that she was in the middle of mentally partaking of. Instead her features were blank as a canvas, as if she were any other stranger just meeting another for the first time.
Though her eyebrow did arch a little…
>> "Y-yes. Agnes, Lexi; Lexi, Agnes."
One look at Rebecca and it was obvious that she was mortified by the actions that the young woman had taken upon her. Her poor sweetie. But…it was still rather funny, looking at her expression. Agnes cracked a smile, a smile of subterfuge as she continued analyzing the woman whose name she now knew to be Lexi.
>> "Nice to meet you, Agnes! Sorry my rare loss cost your girlfriend her Saturday."
Agnes smiled sweetly back as she reached out and squeeze Lexi’s hand, shaking it firmly. Her iridescent wings fluttered quickly before settling back down against her back. Was that out of nervousness or a warning? The soft features of Agnes’ face did not give that thought away. Instead she merely continue to smile.
“Nice to meet you as well. And that’s okay,” Agnes said with a nod and released Lexi’s hand. “We can’t win all the time. Besides it gives me an excuse to come down and see her in costume.” Agnes said as she beamed over to Rebecca.
>> "Interesting! Sae dae ye like th' darker complexion ur th' long legs?"
“I…I don’t know…” she admitted. “Her legs…well…they are pretty long. But…not weirdly so…not that her legs are weird! I mean…” she sighed as she felt herself getting flustered again.
She finally just grew silent. Agnes watched the young woman dressed as Weather Vixen and while she indeed thought she was beautiful, she really could not place her finger onto why, out of everyone in the comic shop, she picked her as being attractive. Yes, it was true that her complexion was pretty, but was that what Agnes was truly attracted her? After all, both Rhythm and Jasmine were lighter skinned. But for whatever reason, at this moment, Agnes found the young woman dressed as Weather Vixen to be the one that snagged her attention.
But was it really out of attention or was it more out of just picking someone to appease Rebecca’s curiosity? After all, Agnes was still uncomfortable about this whole game.
And, unfortunately, Rebecca seemed to want to continue.
>> "Hmm... see, Ah dornt think she daes it fer me."
Agnes did have to commend Rebecca though. She was really taking an active role in trying to figure out this new chapter of her life. It was obvious that she never had feelings like this before, and she had admitted such, so she was still trying to learn what worked for her. Agnes had no fear that Rebecca was going to be leaving her, but it was still just a little awkward hearing her talk through the logistics about what she found and didn’t find attractive.
>> "Wha dae ye think of her? Ah mean, she's curvy. Maybe tha's nice?"
The runaway turned where Rebecca had pointed. Another one of her co-workers, this one was dressed as Power Thief. Agnes had to admit that she was pretty looking, and rather curvy. The curves were definitely an attractive feature. Rebecca had some curves, even if she did complain that she was lacking in “some” areas. Agnes had to admit, though, that it was an attractive feature, one that tended to grab her attention in most normal circumstances of seeing if someone was attractive.
Another shrug and she smiled a little shyly at Rebecca. “Curves are nice. Not…you know, obscenely so, but…just enough…” she responded and sighed, which instantly made her cheeks blush. Finally she turned to her girlfriend earnestly. “You know…sometimes you cannot really just…logically pick your type. Sometimes…it just happens, when you least expect it. I should know…” she mumbled shyly and turned her attention back to the rest of the people who paraded through the comic store. She really hoped that Rebecca figured out exactly what she was looking for…
>> ”Yoo’re th’ only super-power’d lass Ah need. ‘Sides, Ye were th’ only gal tae catch mah eye. Ah’m still figurin’ out what Ah even look fer in women.”
Agnes blushed a little bit. It was cutesy talk, and she loved to hear it, but that did not mean that it was not any less embarrassing. Just a few kind words from Rebecca managed, of course, to always make the young runaway’s cheeks turn a fiery red. But she was doing better with managing her easiness with being flustered. Out in public was still an issue, obviously.
But she smirked as she quickly managed to calm herself. She had to learn that it was okay to take nice compliments.
It was Rebecca’s next statement that made Agnes tilt her head a little curiously. She knew that she cared for her deeply but sometimes Agnes had a tendency to forget that this was still completely new to Rebecca. Not that Agnes herself was any expert at being a lesbian, but between the two of them, she did have more experience. She came to this realization about herself almost a year ago. She still had a lot to learn but she needed to have understanding that this was new to Rebecca as well.
“You’ll figure things you,” Agnes said encouragingly. “And I’ll be with you the whole time. I’m not going anywhere so you won’t be alone.” She beamed.
She sighed though. Rebecca seemed to be up to something. Something that she was still trying to guess at when she switched the topic back to herself…
>> ”Seriously, Ah’d love tae knoo what it is, ye look fer in yer women—an’ nae jist ‘freckled redheads wi’ mismatched eyes.’”
“Oh, Rebecca…I…I dunno…” she responded looked just a little embarrassed by the request.
To be honest she felt a little embarrassed about something like that. Sure she found other girl’s attractive, but she was not entirely sure how she felt about actively pointing to someone and saying that they were pretty, or had a nice face, or pretty body. It just didn’t feel comfortable. Her face was a little red with the thoughts about what Rebecca was asking her to do. To be honest, she could understand the reasons why she wanted to know, but for whatever reason it just made the runaway a little uneasy. But she couldn’t just leave her in the dark, could she?
R-Rebecca…are…are you sure you want to do this?” She asked. Nervously, she brushed her fingers through her hair and began to survey the rest of the occupants in the store. With a sigh, she shrugged as she pointed to one young woman, she guessed one of Rebecca’s fellow workers in costume. “I…I guess she’s pretty,” she responded with a shrug. “The girl dressed as Weather Vixen.”
Agnes felt awkward again. For whatever reason, she just didn’t feel right about talking about other girls while with Rebecca. Permission or not…
Agnes had smiled sweetly at the man that was at the counter but her attention was focused squarely on Rebecca and the costume that she wore. She really did look absolutely adorable in it, and she was surprised that her usually shy, redheaded angel was okay with wearing it. After all, it was a little revealing (for Rebecca at least). But Agnes had guessed that she was rather dedicated to her job so she was willing to do it. On top of that, she lost a bet so she needed to pay up. Well, SHE didn’t lose the bet. She just backed the wrong person.
Either way, Agnes had to commend Rebecca for her dedication. She doubted that she would ever be able to do the same thing. Even though her scars were healed, she still had at least some self-consciousness. Maybe one day, though…
It was then that Agnes looked up to see that Rebecca had finally taken notice of her. The look of happiness and surprise on Rebecca’s face was enough to warm Agnes’ heart to the point that she had to smile wide.
>> "Aggie!"
Agnes grinned as Rebecca practically leapt over the counter to wrap her arms around her and pull her in for a quick hug and kiss. Agnes blushed at the public display of affection, but really, how could she deny her? That did not mean her own wings did not flutter in surprise and nervousness, but she didn’t let that stop her. Instead she just smirked between kisses and returned the gesture in just as sweet a manner.
But when their kiss broke, and Rebecca realized that they were at her work, Agnes cheeks were a bright red. Her wings lowered as she smile casually brushed the hair out of her face. A glance to the side and she noticed the larger gentlemen who had been talking with her girlfriend was still there, gawking a little at the two of them.
Finally he just chuckled as a silly grin came over his face.
“Cooool,” he said as he took his purchases, change and proceeded to leave them. For Agnes, he really was not walking fast enough. But she sighed as she turned back to Rebecca with a beaming smile.
>> "Ah didnae expect ye today! Come tae take a look at pretty lassies in costumes an' spandex?"
Agnes chuckled and shook her head.
“The only pretty girl in costume I came to see was you,” Agnes said with a grin as she leaned against the counter. She then sighed as she looked at all the rest of the girls in costume that were working today. “But, must be hard for you, you know. Seeing all these pretty girls in costume all day. Should I be worried?” she asked with a shy smile.
Agnes was still a little unsure of what to do. She had never really met a mutant before that had such an obvious mutation. The poor man must have suffered ever since his powers first developed and yet he seemed to have such a nice outlook on the world. He was chipper sounding, if a little over-dramatic, but he still seemed like such a nice guy. Though it was odd that he would not stop staring at her. For a second she wondered why, and then she remembered her mutation. She hoped her question to distract him from putting any more attention onto her.
Then she squeaked when the creature suddenly took the cue of his introduction. Agnes blinked in surprise and glanced to Jasmine curiously as the large roach suddenly gave her an elegant spin and bow.
>> "I am none other that Gregory Samson, known through some parts as the magnificent Roach! It is the greatest pleasure to meet you, Agnes…And... You too, Jenny.”
Agnes smirked. She could not help it but it was rather amusing to watch the giant roach act and speak in such an elegant way. And, obviously, Agnes knew roaches. They never acted like that around her. She grinned and gave him a slight bow in return but glanced out of the corner of her eye. Jasmine…was looking extremely uncomfortable. The runaway sighed; she wanted to go over and comfort her but she didn’t want to appear rude to Gregory either.
>> "Also... Pardon me, but I couldn't help but notice you are a mutant like myself... I must say, your mutation is... Quite lovely. Why do you hide it, so?"
Jasmine was beet red now. She did not like anyone hitting on her girlfriend. Eyes narrowed, mouth opened, Jasmine looked ready to say something when suddenly her phone rang. She winced as she picked it up and checked the caller ID.
“Damn, that’s my mom. Be right back, hunny” she said, with emphasis on the last word just for the large Roach and stepped away.
Agnes blushed a little at Gregory’s comment and sighed. She nodded to Jasmine as she stormed off and realized that her reaction was not unfounded. Agnes had been arguing that against same point with her all day, and to hear it again coming from someone completely different was probably a sore blow. But Agnes still reached up to pull her hood closed a little more.
“T-Thank you,” Agnes said as she finally responded to Gregory’s comment. “But…this…this is new to me. I’m…not quite used to it…yet. Or the stares.” her voice was meek and low. But it was still loud enough to reach Gregory…and not only that but to a few new visitors. From the cracks in the pavement and the planters nearby, a few roaches began to skitter towards her. Drawn to her scent the roaches, much smaller than the current one standing before her, began to circle around her protectively, some even going so far as to tread across her shoes. She sighed a little, then looked at the large bug. “See? N-Not a lot of people respond well to this…” she said as she leaned down and let one of them crawl on her hand. She was getting far more used to having the little buggers crawl over her. In a way…they always made her feel safe…
Agnes smirked as she strolled down the sidewalk. She remembered Rebecca’s grumbling last night. She had to dress in costume again because of some bet that went wrong between the men and the women who worked in the comic shop. Now, apparently, all the girls were working Saturday in costumes that they wore for the last promo day. Agnes had dropped by that day, but she had only seen Rebecca to pick up the comics that were left for her. Now though, she was showing up just to shower her girlfriend with moral support. It was obvious that Rebecca was not pleased that she had to work today so hopefully Agnes would be able to brighten her day by showing up.
Dressed normally in just her favorite jean jacket, dark blue jeans, and a deep green top, the young runaway smiled sweetly as she saw the comic shop come into view. Strolling down the street, she had already watched as a several guys walked in and then walked out and she arched her brow. There certainly were a number of male customers today.
Not surprising, considering that the shop was going to be full of young girls dressed up as scantily clad comic characters. Instantly she grimaced though. She started to feel really bad for Rebecca now. It was a good thing she showed up to at least hang out for a bit and invite her to lunch.
Walking up to the front door, Agnes folded her wings down so that she would not strike anyone with their fluttering. The last thing she wanted to do was embarrass herself or Rebecca.
She pulled it open, heard the automatic doorbell ring, and Agnes sighed. She really did love the smell of comic books. The ink, the fresh paper, it was all such a good feeling. Of course she didn’t care for the smell of nachos and hotdogs that seemed to come off of every fanboy in the room. As a matter of fact, it made her just the tiniest bit queasy but she managed to keep down her breakfast. Instead she focused on the task at hand of finding the next issue of her com—errr!...of finding Rebecca…
…ahem.
She paused as she surveyed the whole shop. Those poor girls. Their costumes were rather scandalous but Agnes looked passed all them looking for the one woman that she was here to find. A glance at the counter and Agnes grinned as she found Rebecca distracted by a larger comic shopper who was holding up a stack of comics and trying to debate with her the plausibility of Spectacular Man being beat up by Supreme Man. It was an argument that Agnes knew was flawed since Supreme Man was just a knock off of Spectacular Man made by a separate comic company. But fanboys loved to argue.
And thankfully his debate with Rebecca forced her to turn her back away from the door. Carefully Agnes crept up to the side of the counter and casually waited, listening as Rebecca attempted to get a word in edgewise while ringing up his purchase. Poor Rebecca was in for an earful...
Eventually she would turn around to see her…eventually…
Agnes sighed as she played her beautiful song for Rebecca. The violin sang to its heart’s content and Agnes had poured her soul out for the young Scot. She wanted Rebecca to feel every chord, to know exactly what she was doing, and to let her know that she was letting go of so much because of how much she wanted this relationship to work. She cared about her so much that she doubted that she could ever put the full force of it into words. Therefore she could only hope that the music would convey that message.
Body swaying to the crying tones, Agnes breathed when she finally reached the end. She made an elegant sweep of the bow, paused, and carefully opened her eyes. Tears still blurred the corners of her vision, but even so, she could still clearly see Rebecca. Her sweet, redheaded angel was sleeping soundly a small smile on her face.
Agnes couldn’t help but “aww” a little at the image. Rebecca really did look exceedingly adorable, so much so that it was a shame to wake her. On top of that, Agnes was beginning to feel weariness take over her mind as well. After such an eventful night, all she really wanted to do was to just go to bed. Maybe she would close her eyes for a couple of seconds, just to rest up and help Rebecca back to her room.
Quietly she placed her violin back into its case, along with the bow, and closed it with a barely audible snap. She tucked it away back into its spot next to her bed and stretched out, loosening the muscles of her arms, her shoulders and her back. The gesture made her yawn again and blink with blurry eyes. But smiled sweetly as she looked down at the sleeping form of her girlfriend.
Very slowly Agnes slipped into bed next to her, careful not to move too much so that she didn’t wake her up. Once she was comfy, Agnes reached down to pull her blanket that was neatly folded at the edge. Opening it, she raised it so that it covered both herself and Rebecca up to their shoulders and Agnes sighed happily as she rested her head against the pillow. A small smile appeared on her face as she leaned over and kissed the gorgeous Scot on the forehead.
“Sleep good,” she whispered and snuggled up next to her.
Her hand slipping into hers, Agnes calmly felt her eyelids grow heavier and heavier. Before long, they fell closed and the runaway muttered one last, incoherent thought as sleep took over. Enveloped in warm, both of body, mind, and heart, the runaway’s lips stretched into a smile that rivaled Rebecca’s as she too drifted off to the comforts of sleep…
Agnes sighed as she rested on her side in bed, watching the sweet, odd color eyes of her girlfriend she watched her as well. She saw that look of disbelief and Agnes had to smirk a little bit. She knew that she was being a little self-deprecating but it was just her way. Agnes never liked to talk highly about herself because there was a thin line between confidence and vanity. Then again, maybe that was really just remnants of her mother talking. Could Agnes have self-worth without worrying about coming off as too vain?
She felt the bed move and Agnes blinked as she refocused on Rebecca. The young redhead had edged closer and the runaway sighed as she felt her warm breath near her neck.
>> "Dornt be daft... ye make me happy…Ah promise Ah'm real, an' if thes is a dream, it's th' best dream Ah've ever had."
The runaway closed her eyes and smiled a little as she felt the soft lips of her sweet Scot pressed against her skin. Her smirk widened because of how ticklish it felt but it also felt so good. But it was not just the kisses, but it was the very words that fell from her girlfriend’s mouth. They were so sweet and tender and Agnes felt her heart melting at every syllable.
>> "Ah dornt wanna hear any of this 'dornt deserve me' nonsense."
She smiled. Lips met once again for what had to have been the thousandth time that night. But despite that, Agnes was not at all tired from it. Each time it made her heart flutter and the runaway had to actually gasp for a little bit of air. But it was a feeling that she would never want to trade in for anything in the world.
Gently they grew comfy and Agnes smiled sweetly as she brushed hair out of Rebecca’s eyes. Maybe it really was time for them to call it a night. If so, she really needed to send Rebecca off to her room before she grew too tired to get there on her own. But Agnes enjoyed her presence here on the bed far too much to want to ruin the moment. Then…Rebecca asked to prolong it…
>> "Can ye play fer me a little more?"
The runaway beamed and beamed brightly. Leaning over, she kissed her gently before she nodded. “Of course,” she whispered as she climbed out of bed and once again retrieved her violin.
Standing before the bed, watching as her sweet girlfriend lounged on the bed and looking oh so tired, Agnes tried to think of the perfect piece of play. She had many pieces memorized but she needed one that was perfect for this moment. So she thought…and thought…and thought…
Then she heard a piece of music in the recesses of her mind and she knew that it was perfect for the occasion. Once again she placed her violin under her chin, lifted her bow and placed it at the ready across the strings. Eyes locking with Rebecca momentarily, Agnes smiled and blew her a quick and shy kiss.
“Sad Romance,” she said as she uttered the name of the piece.
Then, her bow swept and the song filled the room with melodious tones. Eyes closed, Agnes purged the sad times from her heart, every last one of them and poured them into the music. But though it sounded sad, there was a twinge of hope in those tones, hope of a romance that would be waiting on the far side of the darkness. For Agnes, she found that romance, at last, after all the dark times she had to go through. Rebecca was her silver lining and it was one that made the runaway smile ceaselessly.
