The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

>>>>>Totally. I'm not sure about fun, but I think we are well on our way to making it scandalous. Lead the way, Princess.
Kate looked at Gawain with a laugh. She released his arm to stand in front of him which still having his right hand in hers. “What do you mean scandalous? What would be so scandalous?” She looked up at him knowing that there were quite a few things that could be scandalous around. Like the fact that the girlfriend of one of Alfred Grimaldi was at a party with another man. However she wasn’t’ going to let them just infer and she was going to do all she could to introduce Gawain around. Show him her world for once.
>>>>>Oh. Didn't realize we were coming here. My girlfriend Evelyn works at the Met.
Kate took his hand as they got out of the car and she was met with flash bulbs. “Oh that is wonderful. What does she do? Maybe she will be here?” Kate wasn’t sure if she was a member of the guest services staff or if she worked for the actual museum. It was after all the Met and they did invite their employees to events.
Kate kissed Gawain’s cheek as she took his arm and they started walking into the building. Only stopping for a second to stand for the photo op and smile for the cameras.
The entire museum was decked out for Christmas as they walked in and were escorted to the hall where the actual gala was being helped. A few people stopped the pair as they walked past and Kate gave them a quick hello as they moved further and further into the room.
“Katherine.”
Kate turned to see the face of the museum’s curator and smiled kindly at the older woman. “Madam Curator it is so lovely to see you.”
“No Prince Albert tonight?” She said taking in Gawain.
“No he is away on business so my very good friend Gawain game in for the rescue.”
“Wonderful.” She seemed to look past them and wave at someone else, “If you will excuse me.”
Kate looked at Gawain as the curator left. “I’m sorry if this is boring. Albie always has a way of making it fun. It is going to be a lot of hello how are yous. Are you okay with that?” She felt bad not really telling Gawain what he was getting into but she was just so relived to not be going alone it hadn’t occurred to her to say anything.
Kate rolled her eyes knowing that tone. Gawain wanted the opportunity to judge her boyfriend and find out what he was worth. However, Kate was far from worried. Albie was kind and good and sweet and caring and handsome and so many other things that would make anyone love him.
>>>>>So, I should be prepared that people will assume I'm him? Talkin' about that, why is he not your date tonight? Not that I'm complaining.
Kate sighed and looked out the window. “No you aren’t going to be mistaken for him. And he is a bit busy. He has to spend the month in Monaco with his family and making appearances in Europe. He is hoping that he can come back to New York for New Years. So, we may spend it together. No promises though.”
>>>>>I'm just glad it's a Gawain day. Wouldn't want to make too big of an impression on your return to high society.
Kate chuckled as the car started and they began to navigate the streets of Manhattan. “About that. I have been back in society for a bit. Over the Summer Albert pulled me into quite a few events throughout Europe. It wouldn’t surprise me if people asked about him.” Kate took Gawain’s hand in hers. “Someday you must meet him. It’s been two years and neither you or Sam has ever seen his face.”
Kate smiled, chuckling as he helped her into her cape like coat. “No we don’t.” She had already called David and he should already be downstairs to take them to the Met. Tonight’s Charity gala was for starving children and Kate had plans on making a very large donation as soon as they walked through the door.
With the door closed behind them Kate turned to look at her knight in shining armor. It was funny how Gawain had always been that for her, even going as far as to actually save her life. “Don’t mind Hanna. She is a little crazy yes but she saved me in Rome. She is the one that found me falling apart in that hotel room and picked me up and showed me things could get better.” Kate sighed fondly, “She is really the kindest soul you will ever find. All be it a little eccentric.”
As they came downstairs David pulled open the door and tipped his hat to the familiar face of Gawain Morris. “Nice to see you sir. It’s been a while.” He offered his hand as always to help Kate into the car before jogging around it and driving off.
>>>>>Hello Princess. The pumpkin carriage is stuck in traffic, but I managed to salvage the mice. Ready to go?
Kate giggled as he kissed her hand, “I just need to put on my dress and then we can go.” She moved to let him come in as a squeal was heard from the kitchen area.
Unlike Kate, her roommate Hanna had no plans to go anywhere so she was dressed in just yoga pants and a tank top that was cut a little too low. Her wavy blonde hair was chucked up on her head in a messy bun and her face was bare of makeup (not that it really needed it to begin with). It was obvious to anyone that Hanna really didn’t care about trying. She was a free spirit after all. She literally slid across the hardwood floor and landed right next to Gawain. “Well aren’t you handsome.” Hanna took Gawain by the arm and lead him to the couch forcing him to sit, “Kate, honey I got this. Go get dressed.”
Kate looked at the pair with a combination of worry and amusement, “Hanna be nice.” She turned to leave without another word. Leaving Gawain to the wolf.
“Soooooooo. I am Kate’s other bestie Hanna.” Hanna sat next to the man so close that she was practically sitting in his lap, “You’re cute. I mean not prince charming but still cute.” She looked Gawain up and down as she judged every morsel of him, “I do not know how Kate has resisted getting with all this for so long. Hmmm”
Kate could hear the conversation echoing through the open floor plan that was her apartment and into her room as she put on the last of her jewelry and checked herself in the mirror one more time. She was happy that Gawain had gone with all black so it didn’t matter what color she wore. Today she had chosen a beautiful yellow dress. Her hair was pulled up into a loose updo and her jewelry was understated at best. The entire ensemble was all very elegant and fun, just like Kate. She picked up her diamond clutch and marched out of her room looking down at the pair on the couch with a laugh before descending to the first floor of the penthouse apartment. “Are you ready to go?”
Kate glanced over at the clock hanging in her closet. Gawain should be here any minute to take her out on the town. Well out to the Christmas Charity Gala at the Met. She hated going to these things alone so when he had offered the last time they went out for coffee she had jumped at the chance. She just hoped to god that he didn’t hate it. These things had a way of being boring. It really was the person that you are with that made if fun. Whenever she went with Albert he would whisper jokes in her ears and tell her funny things about the other patrons that would make her smile and laugh all night long. But he knew her well enough and knew this world well enough to do so. Gawain didn’t.
She took a deep breath as she put the finishing touches on her makeup and checked her hair for any fly aways. For some reason whenever she went out without Albert perfection was a must. It was as if him being there made her only need to be just right. His presence had this way of calming her every time. As she put on her lipstick she heard the doorbell chime and the voice of her roommate calling to tell her she would get it. As if the bells were a queue, Kate’s expression turned to a smile in an instant. Yes Albert calmed her down and she loved him, but Gawain was one of her favorite people in the world. He and she had been friends for years and in many ways he was her best friend. Her family. Yes they didn’t share everything the way her and Hanna did, but she knew he would always be there to make her laugh and make her smile. So, she couldn’t’ help but be made happy by even the thought of his presence.
Kate looked over at Jude with a look of amusement in her eyes at his attempt to flirt with her. He had been doing it since they had started the lessons 3 years ago and it never really got old. He was a little too adorable for his own good sometimes.
>>>>>An etude sounds about right. That's the one meant for practice, right?
“Yes, that is actually why I suggested it. If we can get some of them perfected we can sharpen you skills enough to find the more complicated music that you will like.” She sifted back to her Chopin folder and typed Etude into the search. She knew she had them in here. Ah yes. He had a good number of them that she was sure Jude couldn’t even attempt yet that had been brought on for her own practice but there were also a number that could be used as tools for the young Frenchman.
>>>>> Is there like... a quiz I can take? Or a sampler I can play?
Kate couldn’t help but laugh at Jude’s questions. It was almost silly to think for someone who knew music the way she did. But for someone who was still a student it made an odd amount of sense. “No there is no quiz. It is about playing though piece after piece and finding the era you like to play in or the composer you prefer. For me that is Frederic Chopin. He is a romantic composer as I said and he is my absolute favorite. He is also French like you.” Once she found the one she wanted she placed the tablet with the open sheet music on the stand. “This is actually one of Chopin’s Etudes that I am going to have you play. It is his 10th Opus and there are about 12 parts. Each one teaches a different kind of skill. This first one is all runs with chords in the baseline. It’s something we haven’t really worked on, it is also something that always looks easier then it is.” She put her hand on his knee for only a moment before pointing at the first line of music. “Now I want you to start at the beginning and take the first run slowly.”
Kate opened the file of music as she listened to Jude. What exactly was an epic piece of music? She used her finger to sort through the titles. Did he want something that was loud and full of life? Did he want something hard to play that would show his skill? There were so many things that the word epic could mean Kate couldn’t just pick one. He was going to have to narrow this down.
“Okay so do you want something that is hard to play? Something that will challenge you.” Kate moved into Chopin and Tchaikovsky. They were her favorite composers and she hoped that Jude would like them to. “We could use a ballet or an Etude. One of the seasonal pieces for piano. There are so many choices to pick. You just have to decide what kind of music do you want to play. Every great piano player has their own style. Mine is romantic. What is yours?”
Kate smiled kindly at him as her words caused him to loose focus. He was finally getting it. Finally feeling it. She had been trying for three years to pull that out of him and finally it had come. She pushed up off of the piano and couldn’t’ help but let her smile grow. She couldn’t have been more proud of him.
Kate moved to sit next to him again. “Jude, that was wonderful. Don’t you feel the difference? How you can just throw yourself into the piece and then you never want to leave.”
>>>>>There's more, right? That can't be the whole story.
She laughed kindly at his question and it was obvious that he had felt it. “This is sadly only a variation. There is no story. It is just the same tune played over and over slightly different. The story for a piece like this is whatever you make it. However if you would like more of a piece with a beginning a middle and an end I would be happy to find you one.” Kate stood and moved to grab her iPad from her bag. “If you would like I can find you a piece.” She had quite a collection of digital sheet music she had downloaded specifically for teaching Jude. So, as you can guess she was more than happy to search them now for an appropriate cadence. “What kind of piece do you want to play?”
When had this become Kate’s life? When had hiding and ducking away become something she did on a regular basis? Oh, yes. When she started dating Albert Grimaldi. It had been over a year since they went public with their relationship and ever since she couldn’t find a moments piece from paparazzi trying to find some reason to slander her name or his name or their relationship. It really was rather annoying and in some ways Kate was almost beginning to understand why her mother had become a shut in. It was actually starting to become so bad that Kate had no other choice but to avoid reading any kind of tabloid on any news stands. They kind of had a tendency to take the things she did and misconstrue them, which was surprising because Kate didn’t really do anything that was all that scandalous. Other than being seen going into the known school of mutants time after time. But her being a mutant was kind of old news.
Kate nonchalantly weaved into a crowed as they entered the Met to lose her current tail. She had been enjoying a nice weekend day shopping on Madison Ave when suddenly out of nowhere had come a pack of camera wielding Parana.
As she entered the museum she breathed a sigh of relief and showed her membership card. Honestly, this was probably the best place she could have hidden in. Kate adored the Met and actually donated almost a hundred thousand dollars to it last year alone. Of all the places she could hide this was probably one of the best. As soon as she entered she made a b-line for the medieval exhibit where she could hide in one of the interactive architecture displays she loved so much.
Kate didn’t have much free time these days. She was a full time student, the assistant to the Julliard Orchestra conductor, gave piano lessons to Jude, and had a rather needy best friend and roommate and a boyfriend who was on European time. It was needless to say that she was always go go go go go. However, she still found time to go to the mansion once a day and release some energy before she was forced to do it somewhere where she may hurt someone.
Kate pulled up her usual program of alternating targets and moved to stand in the middle of the room. Not only did she release energy but she practiced once a day to gain a better control of her powers. She closed her eyes as the classical piece of choice for the day began to play. She stretched her fingers, widening them fully and spreading them as far as they would go down by her sides. She always stated every session with a little stretch before she began the real work. She rolled her head around on her neck as she pulled her hands into fists. Then BAM she released her fingers in one quick motion as she opened her eyes and let her hands be engulfed in flame.
She waited to hear the first click as the first target appeared and she spun quickly to throw a fire ball at it. Then did the same to the next and the next and the next. She seemed to dance around the room never really leaving an imaginary circle she had formed at the center as she hit every target. The more targets she hit the higher the difficulty became. Soon she had to aim for two and three targets at a time, shooting off fire balls in rapid succession. Though if someone paid close attention it wasn’t just her skill that was changing the difficultly. The entire program seemed to be built around the music that was playing. Long ago Kate had worked out how to get the computer to automatically build a program against any song she entered. For her this was probably the best way to both get to work and keep herself calm enough not to light the place on fire.
Kate took one last sip of her tea before running out of the room to follow Sam and leaving the tea pot on the counter on the island in the kitchen and the used tea cup in the sink. This set wasn’t very expensive so she had no qualms with some student fining it and using it. She rushed off to follow Sam, stopping in the entrance hall to put on her coat and bundle herself up just in time to hear Sam’s comment about Albert. The two had never met and he was making fun of him something seemed off here.
“For your information Albert is far too busy to have the time to teach me and I am far too busy to have the time to learn. Someday I may learn to drive but it will not be until after college.” She stepped down the front stairs and smiled at the driver, “Thank you David.”
The man in question scurried over to the door as soon as he saw her and opened it as he offered her his hand so she could delicately place herself into the seat. “Lady Katherine.” Kate took his offered hand and climbed into the car. David still refused to call her just Kate but at least this was an improvement over what he used to call her.
She leaned out the door and looked at Sam, “Are you coming?”
Kate leaned into Jude hearing him struggling to find his muse. Her face held a look that was both painful and hopeful. As he started to play her eyes closed tightly and she waited hearing the same mechanical movements as she had before. She relaxed and sighed wishing she had heard something else but knowing she hadn’t. Though, as she listened with still closed something was different. The focus on the technical started to fade as Jude seemed to loosen up in the struggle to find his connection to the music.
Her expression softened and a smile formed. He had listened to what she had said and taken it to heart. Maybe he did want to be here more than she was giving him credit for. He had after all named this as an elective. Did that make her a teacher now? She would have to ask Ms. Taylor at some point if she was supposed to grade him or anything.
Kate was so lost in her thoughts she almost wasn’t paying attention anymore. She had to pull herself back to reality and listen to Jude play. This was about him after all. She shook her head and leaned her elbows on the piano so she was facing her student and could both listen closely and watch his hand movements. “Wrists up, Jude.”
Kate turned and watched him move into the bathroom with a raise of his beer. She was still a little angry watching him do such a thing. But at the same time she couldn’t help but smile at his small gesture of thanks. Sam had never been one for emotional moments. He had always watched out for her and consoled her in the dark times not the other way around. She, however, knew that that thank you was more then just a thank you. And she was going to do everything that she could to make sure he didn’t spiral further down the rabbit hole.
She reached into her purse and pulled out her cell phone, yelling through the now closed door, “You do know that I am not going to be seen in public with you falling over drunk? I have a reputation that keeps my boyfriend from scandal on purpose. I really don’t need or want what comes from going into public with a tall, handsome, drunken man and neither does Albert. I really really don’t want his mother, who already doesn’t like me that much, to hate me for taking you into a store in downtown.”She was very serious about this, but knew he may not have been listening. She had only met Albert’s mother once on her trip across Europe over the summer. She had made a special trip to stop in Monaco for it and it had been one of the most awkward meetings in her life. It was obvious that the woman was judging her and wasn’t sure Kate was good enough for her son. Kate really didn’t need to give her more of a reason to hate her.
Kate dialed the phone as she began to slowly move towards the door to exit the room and give Sam privacy. “David? Can you be at the mansion in about half an hour?... You are going to be bringing me and Sam into the city for some shopping… One moment, David… Sam I am going into the kitchen for a cup of tea.” She walked out of the room and made her way through the halls, “I am thinking that maybe we should go to Macy’s. At the present moment I don’t really think going to Saks is the best idea. Despite the better products. Also Sam wouldn’t care if it wasn’t Egyptian cotton with a thousand thread count…. Wonderful I will see you then.” Kate turned the corner to make some tea before her and Sam were to leave. A little something to warm her up on this cold day.
About half an hour later Kate was lounging at the kitchen table, sipping a hot cup of tea and looking out the large bay window leading to the back yard. She knew David had already arrived and was waiting with the car out front, but she also knew he never really mind having to sit in the car and listen to his sports talk radio while he waited for her. She really was just happy that she had chosen to leave a porcelain tea set and some good tea here for just such occasions. The school didn’t have many tea drinkers in it and really none of the silly cups that were about would taste the same as drinking out of a beautifully crafted tea set.
She poured one final cup and sat waiting and hoping he wasn’t going to come down with another beer in hand. Drinking in his bedroom was one thing. Drinking in the halls of the school was a completely different one.
