The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Kate shook her head as she listened. She remembered Ms. Taylor from their meeting years earlier. She had been the one the tell Kate that her mother had passed. Kate remembered breaking down in her office fondly. Her mother was why she chose this song. It had always been the older woman’s favorite. It however was not surprising that the guidance counselor had told him to think of his future and where he wanted to go in life. That was kind of her job.
Kate smiled trying not to laugh at the thought of herself teaching an elective. Her smile only grew larger as she watched Jude play with one of the keys she would not be using for the piece. It was funny first that he knew she wouldn’t need it and second because he was ashamed enough to do such a tick. She looked over and smiled at him kindly saying nothing in response to his words. It was obvious to her the boy was reflecting on what they had just spoken of.
Her smile only grew has his hand was placed over hers. She finished the finale few notes of the phrase and let them ring through the room before moving off of the bench and gesturing her hand towards him and bowing her head as to tell him to go ahead. She could have said so much but this moment didn’t need words she needed to let Jude go on his own now with no guidance from her. Like she said he needed to find his passion.
Kate leaned her hip on the side of the large black Steinway smiling with all the reassurance she could musters and waiting for his hands to begin moving across the keys once more.
Kate smiled at first happy that Jude was taking responsibility for not practicing but that smile quickly faded and was replaced with a sigh. It was not great to hear how useless her career of choice was in the real world. Or at least how much Jude thought it was. Yes, Kate was ridiculously rich and didn’t really have to worry about doing anything for a job for the rest of her life, but even if she was penniless she would still play the piano. For her the music was a place she could hide. It helped her fly far away whenever things got hard when she was a kid. It had saved her from her mother and the darkness that was held inside of her more times than she could count.
He was right though. It wasn’t going to help him defend himself and actually making enough at it to support an entire family was a once in a lifetime thing. She put a hand on his to stop him from playing and scooted further onto the bench getting closer to Jude and hoping he would move over in kind. She cracked her fingers and started playing her favorite song. “Jude? You do remember that I am going to school to play concert piano professionally correct? And, by the by, I know many people who play the piano and feed their families just fine.” Her body seemed to move with the music as she played from memory and her hands moved with such grace across the keys. For Kate piano was like a dance. Every time she hit a held not her hand would float off of the keys and gently fall back down. She had such a grasp on the piece that it was second nature to play and talk to Jude. “But this isn’t about the music or the practice or any of that. It is about how it makes you feel. When I play I remember my life. I think of who I am and where I have come from. I think of my mother and how she loved to listen to me play. I think of how many lives have been saved through music. I play because it gives me hope and calms my worried soul.” She raised her eyebrows on the last comment and smiled at the teen boy reassuringly, “Jude, playing an instrument isn’t for everyone, no matter how talented they are. If you don’t’ want to play you don’t’ have to. No one is making you. Talent you have, heart you need to learn. You need to find the place it takes you and hold onto it or you will never find a passion for it. And if you don’t’ want to you should probably stop trying.”
It was blunt, yes, but he had kind of told her career choice and the career choices of a good portion of her friends were useless. Kate really didn’t want to sit here any longer wasting her time if he didn’t want to be there. She felt like music was a choice not something you should feel is an obligation.
Kate’s eyes followed Sam as he moved listening closely to every word and feeling worse and worse for getting so upset. She knew him well enough that she knew he wasn’t snapping at her he was snapping and angry with the situation and himself. To think he had some kind of hand in kidnapping the students. Someone must have had him under some kind of mind control or been forcing him to in some way. That was the only explanation she could think of for why he would do such a thing. She could count the people she trusted explicitly on one hand and Sam was at the top of the list. He was one of the only people who had seen her at all her worst points. Who had been there when she needed someone desperately to hold her up. Him and Mirror.
She moved to take a step towards him and stopped herself. She wasn’t sure what to do or say at first. She wanted to help him. She wanted to hold him up just like he did her but his last statement stopped her. Had he changed too much for her? Was that his way of saying he had outgrown her and the close friendship they had shared? “Sam... I…I didn’t know any of that. I’m sorry.” She took a shaky breath not sure what to say to him and avoiding his gaze at first before looking directly into his ice blue orbes, “If you want me to go I will, but know this. You have picked me up off the ground more times than I would like to admit. Which is why if you tell me to leave I will, but I don’t’ want to. I’m not afraid of you and I never will be. You aren’t just my teacher or my friend. You are my family. I trust you more than anyone and I am never giving up on you. No matter how hopeless you become because you wouldn’t give up on me.” The temperature of the room lowered as Kate spoke and stood her ground. She loved Sam the way she loved her mother and she wasn’t leaving him alone until he let her in. Even if she had to come back every day for the next year and pull him out of bed.
Kate spun again as she watched the ice jet past her and a hand flew to her mouth. She had done it again. She had lost control and done it again. She had tried so hard to get Sam to help her but he was never there and he never responded when she tried to talk to him. She had given up months ago when she was in Europe to even get an answer let alone help. So, why was she standing here trying to help him out of his drunken stupor? Why she was making an effort to get him to listen and explain?
The more he spoke the more Kate’s anger began lessoned. She was still annoyed but something was wrong. What had happened over the past year that her mentor had turned into this mess in front of her? For the first time since she had arrived in the room she took a good long look at Sam’s face. There were bags and dark circles under his eyes. He looked tired and it wasn’t just from one night of binge drinking. It was the kind of tired she had had a year ago after she lit her room on fire. She hadn’t slept for days after that and then didn’t have another good night sleep for weeks. She had been so afraid of everything she lost herself and she now had a feeling Sam was doing the same.
“Sam everyone has always loved your class. Why would no one want to take it?” Whatever had happened had something X-Men related she could feel it. Something she wasn’t’ aloud to know because she wasn’t’ one of them. Not yet anyway. “Sam what happened? I was trying to get ahold of you for weeks and you never returned my calls or letters. What happened that made you like this? What changed?” There was now genuine concern all over her face. She had no idea what happened but something told her it was worse than anything she could imagine.
Kate took a deep breath and let out an exasperated sigh, “Again.” She passed next to the piano as she listened to Jude play. He had been getting so good before he aged and their lessons almost stopped. She saw such potential in him and didn’t understand why he didn’t see it and want to go for it. Kate had a hard time understanding people not reaching for and striving to be good at things. She had always been the kind of kid that did extra work when not asked to and practiced a piece so much that she memorized it even though she wasn’t asked too. It was these things that had gotten her into Julliard and it was these things that had gotten her a European tour. It was killing her to see someone throwing away the magic they could do if they tried.
Kate cringed as the wrong note came up and she couldn’t’ help but sigh again. Her back was to the boy as her hand formed into a fist and she tried to calm herself before turning around. ”Jude you are not trying. We have been playing this piece for 4 weeks and you haven’t gotten any betta. Have you practiced at all? I know you keep saying that you are getting used to the smaller hands but we both know it has been almost a year. If you aren’t used to them by now you are never going to be.” She looked away from him and took another calming breath before moving to sit next to him on the betch, “Jude,” her voice was lower and kinder, “you have such talent. You grasp the music so easily when you try. But right now you aren’t trying. You are wasting you potential. You could be great at this.” She smiled at him, “All you have to do is try. Now play it again.”
Kate remained sitting next to him hoping that her little speech made some kind of impact on the young boy.
>>>>>Stop yelling. Heh, bet you weren’t expecting a show when you decided to wake me.
The second the blanket left her hand Kate regretted pulling it off of him. As he shifted to face her, her face turned beet read and with a loud gasp she spun around to look away from the naked form of her friend and mentor. Kate wasn’t exactly innocent anymore but she still wasn’t one for nudity. In truth the only man she had ever seen naked was her boyfriend of 2 years, Albert.
She sifted awkwardly on her heels pushing herself onto her toes as she fidgeted not knowing what to do. She didn’t want to turn around but at the same time she was determined to help him sober up and then find out what was wrong with him. Sam didn’t drink like this. He drank but not like this. He had always been in control for the students. Always held himself together. It was just mind blowing and odd to see him like this.
She breathed deeply and calmed herself ready to turn back around and talk softly.
>>>>>>How long you in town for this time mom?
With those few words it was like her anger switched went to on and she spun around. She stared daggers at him as smoke began to rise from the blanket she had thrown over her shoulder. “Sam you are a teacher who is currently waking up drunk in his own school.” She wasn’t yelling, she wasn’t screaming, her words actually came out quietly, a good sign that she was now beyond angry. The smoke turned into a small fire that grew with every word behind her. “Excuse me for being a little angry at your brazen disrespect for this school and the students who count on it. I understand hurting or being lost or whatever your reason for this is, oh goodness do I understand, but this is ridiculous and now I am no longer caring I am just angry.” Kate didn’t notice at all as the temperature around her rose and rose and rose from both her and the white hot fire behind her. She didn’t’ care that he was nude in front of her, but instead, she just stood, clenching her hands into fists at her sides waiting for him to give some kind of explanation.
Kate’s mouth fell open in shock at Sam’s blatant disregard for both her presence and his own health. He was clearly still intoxicated and probably hung over, something Kate herself had never ever had the pleasure of experiencing. The real great thing about having a very high body temperature is that you burn off alcohol at an expodential rate. Well she had had a hangover once after drinking none stop until about 4 in the morning when she lived in Rome but she had never woken up drunk before.
Her hands clenched and her eyes narrowed as the temperature in the room rose a good 10 degrees in a second. Poor Bruno had no choice but to back away with a whimper as she became too hot to be near. ”Sam… What are you doing!?” Her voice was loud and easily filled the room and probably some of the hallway. Kate however didn’t care. She was furious. He was a teacher at a school that he lived in and he was waking up drunk. This was ridiculous and inappropriate in so many ways.
>>>>>What time is it?
Kate marched across the room with some force, her heels clicking on the wood floor as she walked. She could feel the flame forming in her hand and had to fight to keep it from becoming fully formed. She also knew that she was probably making him a little uncomfortable with how much she was warming the room but she didn’t care. He deserved it as far as she was concerned. “It is time for you to get up!” She reached down and pulled the pillow out from under his head while stripping him of the blankets as well. Tossing both clear across the room.
Kate wondered towards the music room to try and check on the tuning of the piano first. It had sounded a little off the last time she was here and she wanted to get it fixed before her next lesson with Jude.
She rounded a corner only to be met face to face with another blonde girl. Kate fell back into the corner as they collided and the girl fell to the floor. She looked very concerned but tried her best to smile reassuringly offering her hand to the girl not really thinking about how hot her skin currently was.
>>>>Sorry! I should have been watching where I was going!
Kate’s smile faded hearing the accent. She had actually never met another Brit within the mansion walls, “That is quiet alright. I wasn’t paying a huge amount of attention to where I was going ‘ither.” Her words were kind and soft as she tried to make the girl feel as comfortable as possible. “I’m Kate it is very nice to meet you. It isn’t often I meet people from my own country.” She stood waiting for a response and hoping that she wasn’t holding the girl up in whatever it was she was doing. Kate had the rest of the afternoon off so she had all the time in the world.
Kate didn’t move as she watched him flip and go into a defensive stance. This was Sam, her teacher and he had taught her just how to combat such a stance. She chose however to just sit there straight backed and smile at him till he notices who she was. This was not the first time she had woke him up. However this was the first time she smelled like this.
All of a sudden, just as Sam fell back onto the pillow, she was hit with a wall of smell and her senses were filled with the sour smell of cheap alcohol. She grimaced and waved a hand in front of her nose.
>>>>You shouldn’t sneak up on me when I’m sleeping.
Kate giggle, “I didn’t sneak up on you. I was here doing what you asked me to do before you left. Feeding and giving love to your pets.” She then whacked him on the back of the head as she got up and moved across the room with Bruno following her. “I can’t believe that you didn’t tell me you were back. I know I have been busy as of late and we have not be able to talk as much as we used to but that is no excuse to avoid me.” Kate grimaced again and held her nose, “You do realize you smell like a bar, correct?”
Kate finally had a day off. Class had been canceled because of something in her teacher’s personal life which meant not only the class she had today but the rehearsal too was canceled. Thank god for them being under the same professor. She called her car and asked David to drive to the mansion. Sam had asked her to watch his pets while he was away and she had been doing just that. She loved his dog and cat and they had learned to love her. This was one of those things that she did to help her unwind. Getting to spend an hour or even a few minutes with the animals was a great way to get out of her own head and nothing think about the score she had to transcribe or the piece she had to memorize. TI was a way for her to escape her life and deal with something simple.
Kate arrived at the mansion at 1 in the afternoon. It was unseasonably warm for September and Kate wore only a simple dress, sweater and flats. Her style had evolved over the years but there were certain things that would always be a Kate Stanley Finch-Hatton stables. She navigated her way through the halls to the teacher’s wing, digging through her bag for the key to Sam’s bedroom the entire time. She noted the quiet of the halls at this time of day remembering her time at the school wondering around while others were in class. This had always been one of her favorite points in the day.
She stuck the key in the lock and heard a click as it turned. The room was dark and the curtains were pulled, something she didn’t remember doing the last time she was here. Though in the recent weeks since she got back from Europe things always seemed different every time she entered the room. She moved into the dark and flicked the switch on the lap feeling something at her feet. She knelt down to greet the dog, “hi puppy.” It wasn’t exactly a puppy but he was sweet like one. She smiled and rubbed the dog as he flipped on to his back to expose his stomach.
That was when she heard it a noise off in the distance like a rustle of fabric. Kate’s head shot up and she looked over at the bed to see a rather familiar lump lying there. “Sam?” She whispered as she moved closer and confirmed her suspicions, “Sam!” This time it was a yell as she launched herself on the bed to sit next to him, “When did you get back?” She hadn’t really seen the man in months and had only started attending to the pets when he had asked her via phone months earlier. Before that it had been some time since she had seen or heard from him. She had truly missed him.
Kate took a deep breath as she walked through the large doors of the mansion the cold air burning her lungs as the heat engulfed her body. She smiled fondly thinking of how warm and inviting this place had always been for her and so many others. In the past year she had visited it once a week for Jude’s lessons but she had never taken the time to visit it. She had become so consumed with her schoolwork and practice and career. She was beginning for form a new life but was losing the one she didn't want to leave behind.
She moved into the building, letting the door close behind her. She loosed her scarf and unbuttoned her thick jacket. It was freezing out and this meant layers upon layers for the tiny girl. She hated this time of year and often felt that she should have moved to Florida. Yet she was still here even though it was 15 degrees outside. She hung her jacket on one of the hooks near the door meant for guests. It was odd to think of herself as a guest here. It had been her home for a long time and even now was more of a home then the one she grew up in and owned. Kirby hall was just as big but far more empty.
Kate stood wondering who was actually here. She really had no way of knowing which direction to go in. For all she knew all the people she loved and cared about weren't even here.

Kate could barely catch her breath as she held onto Gawain for dear life. She was so invested in him and the fact that he was there that she barely registered the movement as he lifted her to move her out of the room. She locked her ankles and pulled herself into him burying her face in his shoulder. She didn’t want to let go for fear that he would dissipate into the smoke around her. She never wanted the warm contact and caring hug to end.
Kate heard his words drift half muffled into her ears and shook her head still not taking her face out of his bare chest. He was warm from the heat of the fire and she could feel his heart beating beneath his chest. It was quick and frantic from the commotion but she didn’t care because it told her he was alive and that the horrible nightmare was really over. She hated sleeping and every day the dreams got worse and worse. She had truly gotten lucky tonight that there had been those there to save her. She wasn’t sure what was to come next but she knew that she was dangerous and in the back of her mind, getting ever louder, was a voice saying that next time there would be no one there to save her and everyone around her.
Kate buried her face further into the moist of Gawain’s chest, hearing him yelling at students to scoot. She didn’t want to think about those things. She didn’t want to be dangerous. She didn’t want to kill or maim or hurt. She wished with all her heart that she could just go back and stop this. Go back and trade places with her father therefore erasing all the pain she had caused and all the damage she had done. If there was ever a way for her to stop being who she was she would take it in a heartbeat.
Kate looked around the room franticly not sure of where she was or how she got there. She was looking for something familiar that would reassure her that everything she had just experienced was a dream. She still coughed and gasped for air the smell and taste of smoke invade her senses. The room was hard to make out in the darkness and she could barely hear over the blaring alarm. Everything seemed to be just a blur as her ears opened and she heard the voice of the man she had just witness die in her dreams. She looked to the source of the saddening sound and was shocked at what she saw. Kneeling next to her was Gawain, her best friend in the world, and he was alive and well. Or so he seemed.
She just sat there staring at him as he checked her over. He spoke but the words were lost in a jumble. She felt his touch and as he lifted her she launched onto him latching her arms around his neck and holding on for dear life as tears began to pour from her eyes and she both coughed and sobbed into his bare shoulder. She tried to speak but could barely breath let alone get out words.
