The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Even before she had said the words, Lee knew that Tarin wasn't going to take it well. Because he just didn't understand. When they had finally talked about it, Lee had been completely truthful when she had told Tarin that she wasn't scared of him. That the possibility of him having that kind of a merge didn't change how she felt about him, that it didn't change anything in their relationship.
But that day, that had been worse as she sat there with him in the rubble, trying to calm his panic, unable to touch him.
Lee's eyes had slipped closed, so she hadn't seen Tarin's eyes widen. But that didn't stop her from hearing his voice. ”But nothing happened…I made sure…”
Hearing the tone in his voice, was it hurt? Betrayal? Sadness? Lee looked up at Tarin. ”I know nothing happened, Tarin. It's…”
But Lee wasn't sure what ‘it’ was, at least not in a way she could put into words.
”What made that worse? Why wasn't Tarin being trapped in the building as bad?”
”Because as soon as I stopped freaking out that he'd saved me but was still in there, I was able to figure out what to do next. I could try to figure out where he was so I could get to Tarin faster once I was able to go back in.”
”And how was the possible merge worse? What made it different?”
Lee turned a look at Dr Rossi, one that was clearly not happy with these questions. ” because you never know what might happen with a merge…”

Lee watched as Dr Rossi nodded while she spoke. Taking in what Lee was saying both about the claustrophobia as well as the fact that there might have been a merge that could have happened, but that between the two of them, they had been able to avoid it.
Because Lee was looking at Dr Rossi as she spoke, she didn’t notice when Tarin turned to look at her, or when he shook his head. But the doctor noticed, giving another nod.
When Tarin spoke, Lee looked over at him. ‘It’ had been an issue? Was he talking about the potential merge, or the elevator issue?
Before Lee was able to question that, Dr Rossi spoke. ”You said that both of you were there, but only mentioned Tarin getting trapped. Where were you during the collapse, Lee?”
Lee looked back at Dr Rossi, confused. Why did it matter where she was, they were here for Tarin’s claustrophobia. ”I was beside Tarin when it started,” Lee replied, still confused. ”But he had a spirit drag me out as everything came down.” Lee still wasn’t very happy about that.
”As everything came down, with Tarin still inside,” Dr Rossi mused, looking between the two of them on the couch. ”Then when you got back to Tarin, there was the possibility of a merge.
“Which of those was worse for you, Lee?”
Lee tensed up on the couch as she heard Dr Rossi ask that question. That wasn’t why they were there. ”What does that have to do with Tarin’s claustrophobia?”
”Maybe nothing,” Dr Rossi answered with a shrug. ”But it’s still something that should be discussed since you’re here.”
As the woman had spoken, Lee’s eyes dropped from her face to look at the floor between them as she bit her lip. She didn’t want to answer that. The answer would not help with Tarin’s claustrophobia.
”Which of those was worse for you that day, Lee?”
But Lee also knew that Dr Rossi wouldn’t stop until she got an answer. She knew that from experience. Lee took a deep breath, letting it out in a sigh before whispering. ”The merge.”

The man claimed to be a bit competitive, and that was why he was working so hard to keep up with her running pace for so long. Lee gave a slight shake of her head with an amused smile on her face.
But at least even he had admitted that it wasn't a very good excuse.
Lee hoped that he didn't take ‘losing’ too badly. Though, with the fact that he was still matching her pace, Lee was starting to wonder how long it would take him to realize that he had never even stood a chance.
And yet, he was still continuing to run beside her, stubbornly keeping pace despite the fact that he was really struggling to do so.
As they crossed the point that finished Lee’s first lap of the park, she glanced over at the man again. He was not going to be able to keep up much longer. No matter how hard he pushed himself. Not with the way that he was breathing.
Finally, though, he seemed to realize that fact himself, and that same amused smile returned to Lee’s face. ”Tonight,” Lee replied to him, the smile still on her face. ”I can guarantee that you are. Far out of your league.”

Lee was looking at Tarin, but Tarin was simply looking at…some point in the room. He wasn’t looking at her, and he wasn’t looking at Dr Rossi.
But despite how much Lee was sure that he didn’t want to be there, he was still sitting there on the couch beside her, still holding her hand.
He wasn’t running. Even if it seemed he wasn’t able to speak, to explain to the doctor himself why they, why he was there.
When Lee offered to tell Dr Rossi the reason for him, she wasn’t sure how Tarin would take that. It was quite possible that he would tell her no, that he didn’t want her to tell Dr Rossi the reason. That’s why Lee hadn’t told the woman more than the fact that it was an issue with a phobia he had the previous week, Lee knew that Tarin didn’t like sharing these dark parts of his past with anyone, and it wasn’t her place to share.
The problem was, without telling Dr Rossi something, she wouldn’t be able to give them any help whatsoever.
Tarin still wasn’t looking at her, and still wasn’t speaking, but finally he nodded that she was allowed to tell Dr Rossi.
”Ok,” she whispered to Tarin before turning to the other woman.
”Tarin is claustrophobic,” Lee started the explanation. ”He has been since he was a child. He didn’t have issues with it for a long time, but recently he’s been having issues with the claustrophobia again. Hasn’t been able to use elevators because of it.
“The charity housing project that had that building collapse recently, we were there. Tarin got trapped. Tarin has never had a merge with another person, but I had described as best I could what it would feel like when it was about to happen. Luckily I was there when he was dug out; we think a merge could have happened, but I was able to stop anyone from actually touching him.”

They were in the room, sitting on the couch. Dr Rossi had asked Tarin what the problem was that had brought him there. The problem that had prompted Lee to get this set up and have Tarin come in.
But Tarin just sat there. Silently. Still looking just as panicked, if not more so, than he had been in the waiting room.
Lee’s thumb rubbed slowly along the back of Tarin’s hand as she sat there looking at him. Trying to encourage him.
Eventually, Tarin just shook his head and sighed.
Lee knew that this was going to be hard. It had all been hard for her to talk with Dr Rossi years ago. It’d been hard for her to answer the woman’s questions the previous week when she had come in.
Tarin had never talked about issues before being with her, though. There were things that Tarin told her that he’d never spoken about before in his life, he had said. And though Tarin had seemed to open up more and more easily as the weeks and months had passed after that night, it appeared that it had simply gotten easier for Tarin to talk with Lee, not in general.
”Would it be ok if I tell her?” Lee asked Tarin, her eyes not leaving his face, her thumb still moving slowly across the back of his hand. ”Not everything. Just to get started?”

As Lee sat there waiting for Tarin to tell her what he wanted ther to do, stay in the waiting room or go in with him, she was watching his face. He looked almost panicked. So panicked that Lee almost wanted to say to forget about this whole thing so she didn’t have to see that look on his face.
But the problem was, his face looked panicked when he thought about going in an elevator, too. That was a far more common occurrence, and Lee had no idea what else she could do to help him with that.
That was the reason they were here to start with.
”Come with me, please.”
”Of course, Tarin,” Lee said, squeezing his hand again as she stood up beside him. Then led him into the office.
It was a different room, in a different Borough, than when she had been seeing Dr Rossi years ago, but it looked very similar. There was still a couch, different but the colour was a close match, that she had spent so many hours sitting on. And there was still a chair sitting across from it which Dr Rossi was taking a seat in. As well as a desk and shelves of books that Lee had paid zero attention to unless she had been studiously avoiding looking at the doctor.
Closing the door behind them, Lee led Tarin over to the couch and sat down.
”Good afternoon Tarin. What brings you in today? Lee wouldn't tell me much other than you're having some issues with a phobia that you've had since childhood.”

Tarin had agreed to at least try talking with Dr Rossi about what had happened to him. He was still very much doubting that it would help at all, but Lee was hopeful.
That was the good news, though. That Tarin was willing to try. When she had first brought the idea up to him, he wasn’t willing to even see the woman.
The other bit of good news was that Dr Rossi had an office in Manhattan, meaning that they didn’t have to travel all the way to Queens to see her. Because Lee was sure that Tarin would have used the distance as an excuse not to see the doctor.
But the day had come, and Lee and Tarin were sitting in a small waiting room outside the office Lee had had the session with Dr Rossi the previous week.
”Thank you for doing this,” Lee told him again quietly as she looked up at Tarin sitting beside her, giving his hand a slight squeeze.
A moment later, the door to the office opened and a man came out, followed by Dr Rossi. The man quickly left, and Lee glanced over to see Dr Rossi standing in the doorway. ”Tarin Brooks?” the doctor asked.
Lee looked over at Tarin again. ”I can go in with you if you want,” she reminded him softly. ”Or I can wait out here for you.”

Lee nodded as she listened to Ms Sundance explain the academics there at the mansion. That was pretty much what Lee had expected, but it was good to hear all of that from one of the actual teachers here.
And they could work around different educational paths? That was interesting. That was good to know; Kevin was definitely smart, but it was sometimes impossible to get him to apply himself if he really wasn’t interested in something. So that was definitely something for Lee to keep in mind for the future if there were issues.
”Kevin is 13, heading into grade 8,” Lee answered. Then nodded toward the whiteboard. ”And things like that will keep his attention more than almost anything else. From the moment he was old enough to understand what mutant powers were, he has been absolutely fascinated by learning what people’s powers are when he meets someone new.”
Lee paused. She knew that Ms Sundance wasn’t going to be able to tell her any specifics at all about how the mutation control lessons would be taught. There were far too many individual variables for each person that would change how, where, when, how often those lessons would be given.
But after a couple moments, Lee did ask a question. ”Who is it that teaches those classes on control?”

The young woman on the other side of the counter looked confused when Lee ordered a large black. Lee was shocked into silence for a moment; surely ordering coffee at WcDonalds wasn’t that unusual that you had to spell out exactly what you wanted to that degree. Right?
It wasn’t like Lee had ordered a double double. At least then she would have understood the confusion.
After correcting the young woman and saying that she wanted a black coffee to go with her cookies, Lee paid, took her receipt, and stepped off to the side.
And saw that there was a free pie on the receipt.
Lee was about to step back up to the counter to say she didn’t need that pie, nothing had been messed up, the misunderstanding had been corrected before her order could have been made wrong when everything went south.
There was a man at the counter now, wearing a large coat despite the warm weather who was thrown against the wall by the man behind him.
Everything in the restaurant went into shocked silence for a moment as Lee sighed. This was why she had basically done nothing for six years beyond taking Kevin to school and stopping by the bar for paperwork and inventory. She couldn’t volunteer without a building collapsing on her and Tarin, and she couldn’t get coffee at WcDonalds without a mutant throwing another customer against the wall.
Then the man reached across the counter for the young woman, grabbing her by the throat, as the screaming started.
”Really?” Lee sighed. At least she still had energy from the night before and this wasn’t a pre-Tarin early morning coffee run where she was barely conscious.
Stepping forward quickly, Lee kicked at the back of the man’s knee, hard, hoping to drop him to his knees as she increased her siphoning. And if that didn’t get him to let go of the woman’s throat, she was prepared to make him.

Tarin being there, him holding her, him agreeing to try speaking with Dr Rossi and trying to get comfortable in elevators before trying what he’d done with Shin again had gone a long way to making Lee feel better that evening.
But then Tarin was shifting, moving away from her, leaning back against the couch more normally. And Lee was disappointed. It wasn't the most comfortable position to stay in for a long time, but Lee was wanting to stay that close to Tarin.
A moment later, Tarin was pulling her onto his lap. Feeling Tarin snuggling his head into her shoulder again, Lee smiled, wrapping one arm around his neck as her other hand rested on his arm. ”More of this sounds very good,” Lee agreed, turning her head to kiss his temple.

Was Tarin actually blushing? It was really hard to tell with how close they were, his forehead resting against hers, but the idea made Lee smile wider than she already had been. She hadn’t been trying to get Tarin to blush, but it was a very nice effect of what she had said.
And Lee just continued to sit there with Tarin, foreheads together in silence as her fingers slowly moved through his hair until Tarin spoke. Even then, Lee was quiet for a few more moments.
”You already have helped,” Lee told him. ”But continuing this will help more.”

Lee laughed when Tarin made some suggestions about what she could do to help. ”I’m not sure I would use the word ‘awesome’,” Lee replied to Tarin as she looked at him when he lifted his head off of her shoulder. Then shook her head slightly. ”No, not awesome. You’re incredible, great, loving, sexy…”
She trailed off as she smiled at him, then closed the now very small distance between them to give him another kiss.
But then Tarin got a little more serious again and Lee nodded. ”I get that,” Lee said, her voice soft. ”I barely moved from the couch after seeing the doctor today until you got home.”
Lee smiled at Tarin again as she let her fingers play with his hair slightly at the nape of his neck. ”I’m glad you’re starting to feel better, though.”

Lee turned toward the woman approaching as she got close, but before she spoke, and gave a friendly smile. ”Lee Smith,” she returned the introduction as she shook the woman’s hand. The science teacher’s hand. That made a lot more sense with the lab coat and apparent experiments around the room.
Did Lee have a current student at the mansion? No, but this also wasn’t a prospective school. ”Neither, actually,” Lee admitted before going on to explain further. ”My son is going to be starting here in the fall. But I realized that other than seeing where the classrooms were during his tour, I didn’t really know a whole lot about the teachers or specific classes or anything like that, so realized that it would probably be good to come over here for this today.”

After the nods of greeting, or acknowledgement, or whatever they were, the man faced ahead again, and Lee did the same. Fully expecting that his energy beside her would start falling back. Behind her.
Except that it didn’t.
The man wasn’t falling behind, she wasn’t running faster than him, he was actually keeping pace with her.
Thanks to her morning runs with Tarin over the last few months, Lee knew better than ever that she was running faster than people generally did in this park. Unless they were doing a short, quick sprint. But that’s not what this was. The song that had just started playing as she came up alongside the man ended, and he was still there, running beside her.
As the next song progressed and the man continued to keep pace with her, Lee looked over her curiosity growing. It wasn’t as though she was running at an inhuman pace, but all of the years that she had been running in the park like this, when she had run along with people, they had only really run side by side when she had run at their pace.
And Lee hadn’t even made it a full lap yet, so she was far from being tired.
Glancing over at the man again, Lee saw a similarly questioning look on his face. But he was having a far more difficult time keeping up with her it appeared than she was having at this pace.
”Is there a reason you’re trying to keep up with me?” Lee asked, taking an earbud out so she would be able to hear his response. Not that she felt much concern; she was able to feel his energy, so he wasn’t an adapted, and she still had plenty of energy. But it did feel a little weird.

Lee smiled slightly when she felt Tarin’s head leaning against her shoulder and she shifted closer. Lee leaned her head against Tarin’s slightly as they sat there.
Then he shook his head when she asked if he was ok. He wasn’t ok. Lee took a breath as she placed a hand gently on the back of Tarin’s head and just sat there like that with him until he spoke.
But he would be ok.
Lee nodded, otherwise not moving as they sat there on the couch hugging. ”Anything I can do to help?”
