The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Lee shrugged as she smiled up at Tarin while they walked down the street. ”It makes perfect sense to me,” she replied.
It really didn’t take them long to get to the nearest grocery store to do their shopping for the disaster that was going to happen that night. And while Lee had been there before, it had been years. There were other stores that were closer to the apartment, and one between there and Kevin’s old school that were so much more convenient.
And while it was easy for them to find some of the things on their list, they hadn’t been able to find everything yet. ”It’s trying to tell us that dinner is doomed,” Lee teased. Even if she did think that it actually wasn’t going to turn out well.
”Though, unless you’ve got a map hidden under that list, I don’t think staring at it is going to help.”
Tarin was trying to reassure her by listing everything they had figured out in order to do this. The list of ingredients, the directions with each step spelled out for them. And unlike with the pie, they were making sure to have two of everything to start with so they could try again.
Though, Lee supposed, when they ended up ruining the second attempt, they could always just order dinner.
He was trying to reassure her, yet he also was questioning her comment about burning water. Lee shrugged. ”I don’t know. I’m just that talented?” she said jokingly. ”You’re always saying how amazing I am. I’m an amazingly bad cook.”

They did have plans for that night, however ridiculous they were. Cooking. What was she thinking?
But Tarin did have a point. The last time she’d met him inside the shop, they really hadn’t followed through with their plans for the night. And the couple times before that when Lee had stopped by the shop when Tarin had random time available in his schedule…
Yeah, it probably was best that she hadn’t gone inside. If she had and they still managed to end up cooking that night, the chances were very good that they wouldn’t end up eating until midnight.
”I am,” Lee replied, taking Tarin’s hand as they started walking away from the shop. ”Though I’m still not sure how I got talked into this. I haven’t burned water in years, but I’m not sure how good of an idea this is.”

A casual 10k? It really hadn’t looked all that casual the previous lap when he was trying to keep up with her.
”Sure he can, nothing against that,” Lee answered with a shrug. ”Just don’t normally see someone doing that at midnight, that’s all.”
The man continued more seriously. And very…carefully spoken in how he chose to explain himself. Insomnia, but only kinda, because of a ‘condition’ that exercise helped with. It all sounded rather familiar.
Now that she was actually able to see him, Lee noticed that the man she was jogging with was a fair bit younger than her. Back when she was around how old she guessed he was, Lee also had the frequent tendency to choose her words extremely carefully to explain things while not exposing her own ‘condition’.
Then again, the Mutant Registration Act had been in force at the time.
”How 'bout you?"
”Insomnia as well,” Lee admitted. Which was technically true. When she had this much energy, Lee could not sleep. Not unless she crashed, but thankfully that hadn’t happened in years. But Lee also just was not tired when she had energy like this.
”Running is the only reliable thing I’ve found to help with that,” she continued. ”So I either run or I give up the idea of sleeping that night.”
“And no, nothing like that,” Lee continued. ”Simply because of the insomnia. Probably similar to your ‘condition’.”

Kevin would be home tomorrow. And while Lee was beyond happy to be able to see her soon, this year his homecoming from Texas was a little bittersweet. Kevin coming home meant that there was suddenly much less time before he moved to the mansion for school.
It also meant that things around the apartment would change, her and Tarin weren't going to be alone there anymore. But that was fine. Things had been good before Kevin had left. Comfortable routines, Kevin and Tarin got along well, everything went as smoothly as it could with a teenage mutant in the house.
All it really mean was that she and Tarin were going to need to cut down on the public displays in the common areas a bit.
At least if they didn’t want to gross Kevin out.
But they still had one more night on their own, and for some reason as they had been talking about it, it had somehow sounded like a good idea for them to try to cook dinner that night.
Lee had no idea what they were thinking. But she still made her way toward Tarin’s shop that evening, timing her arrival for when he should have been finishing up the day. Only to find as she approached that he was already waiting for her outside.
”What, did you not trust me to come inside?” Lee asked with a laugh.

Well before she was able to see him, Lee sensed another person up ahead of her. Another runner, Lee guessed based on how quickly she was approaching them. At a much more rapid pace than if it was someone simply walking.
As Lee got close enough to actually see the person in the night, she was surprised to find that it was the same man who had tried to keep up with her on the last lap.
And as she was just able to make him out, he was looking back and already had a hand up in greeting.
Lee knew that she wasn't being loud enough for him to have heard her already with time to turn and recognize her. She had never seen another runner look back at her at that distance in all the years she had been running in this park.
At least no one with normal human hearing.
As she caught up to him, Lee slowed her pace down to match his this time, pulling an earbud out. ”I did not expect to see you still out here,” Lee said as she came up beside the man on the path. ”I have to say, you’ve piqued my curiosity. What has you out here running yourself into the ground like this?”

Now that Tarin was actually speaking, the session was focused on him. Which it should be, Lee thought. Did she have things that Dr Rossi would want to discuss had the woman known about them? Oh, most definitely, Lee was sure.
But she was managing perfectly well. It was Tarin who needed the help right now because of how much of a problem his claustrophobia was being.
And as was the case when the talking wasn’t too difficult, the session was over sooner than you would expect it to be.
When Tarin looked over at her after Dr Rossi asked if there was anything else, Lee shook her head. ”No, I think that was good for today,” Lee replied.
At that point, it didn’t take long for them to get out of the office and into the hallway. But before they got too far down the hall, Lee pulled Tarin to a stop and looked up at him. ”Thank you, Tarin,” she said, her voice soft and sincere. ”I know that was hard, but I’m proud of how much you were able to do today.”

It had certainly been a strange encounter, the man struggling so hard to keep up with her as she ran. At a pace faster than she had ever run with Tarin. And even after all of the years that Tarin had been training and running, he was satisfied with that pace and distance. Except for the rare day when Lee needed to ask him to either slow down or end the run early. Though, it was possible that that had more to do with her not making sure she had the energy she needed than anything with the running itself.
It didn’t take long for Lee to put the encounter out of her mind. She was not expecting the man to still be out for a run when she made it back to that side of the park, and since she was out earlier than for her normal night time runs, Lee honestly never expected to see him again.
Since it was earlier, if you considered midnight-ish to be early, Lee did pass more people than she was used to, both those walking or running on the path around the park, as well as sensing people off the path, further into the darkness of the park. Meaning that Lee had to actually pay attention to her surroundings more than simply with her siphoning as she ran.
It was rather annoying, to be honest as she wasn’t able to just zone out and lose herself in the music from her earbuds as she ran or work through something she needed to think about.
About 40 minutes after she had left the man behind on the path when he couldn’t keep up any more, Lee finished her second lap of the park and started on to lap number three. Though, with how she was currently feeling, three laps might not even be enough to get to sleep that night. Damn airports.

Dr Rossi asked what was different about elevators, and Lee had to fight the urge to roll her eyes. If they had figured that out, they would have been able to think of ways to deal with it.
But Tarin was seriously thinking about it, and after a short time, he even had an answer.
Lee leaned back against the couch as she looked at Tarin. That actually made so much sense when looked at with what was done to him in his teens. He wasn't stuck in the elevator in the same way, but he also wasn't able to just get out whenever he wanted to.
”Good. That's a great revelation to make. And how are you feeling about taking the elevator when you leave here?”

Lee shook her head as she turned to look at Tarin again. Hadn’t she already told Tarin how she had found him so quickly? ”I was searching for where I could feel people’s energy before I could get back in,” she told Tarin softly. ”The kitchen was toward the back, so I knew that the 4 people I felt closer to the front weren’t you.”
But then Tarin was describing what it was like when he was trapped, how small it was. And pointing out that he didn’t have issues with places like this office or the shop, which were definitely on the smaller side.
”There is obviously something about elevators that is different from those other places. What thoughts and feelings come to mind when you think about getting in an elevator?”

Lee nodded when Tarin told Dr Rossi how long he had been trapped. Then she turned to look at the doctor. ”It took almost 20 minutes for the first search people to get in,” Lee added details. ”So I probably got to Tarin and we’d dug enough to be able to see him by about 25 minutes? But it was probably almost another 10 minutes before he came out, because we were worried about the merge.”
”It only took about 5 minutes to find him? The news made it sound like the collapse was far worse than that.”
”Oh it was,” Lee confirmed. ”Like I said, once I calmed down, I figured out what to do next. By the time we went in, I knew, basically, where Tarin and about 6 others were trapped.”

As she looked at Tarin, Lee could tell that he was listening. Really listening.
When Lee finished, she felt Tarin squeeze her hand. And when he spoke, Lee smiled slightly at him. ”Thank you,” she whispered.
Then Tarin turned to face the doctor.
And actually started explaining more of the problem, where it had started. Alluding to, but not explaining the ‘training’ he had received when he was younger.
Lee gritted her teeth as he mentioned that part, but otherwise said nothing as she sat there looking at Tarin. It was hard for him, Lee had known it would be before they had even arrived. But he was actually talking now.
”Well, that certainly explains why you have difficulty with small places,” Dr Rossi said with a nod. ”How long were you trapped during the building collapse?”

At least the man who was attempting to keep pace with her was taking the fact that he was so clearly out of his league well. He was even matching her amused smile.
”Some days I do,” Lee agreed about making the running lol too easy. Though after spending time at the airport that day was really why. ”When I've got energy to burn.”
The man was really starting to struggle now, and was starting to lag behind a bit. Then he was falling back faster. Glancing over her shoulder, Lee saw that he had dropped back down to a jog.
”See you next lap then?"
Lee laughed slightly to herself and shook her head. ”If you’re still actually out here,” Lee replied. Because her laps when she was out running at night were very different from when she ran with Tarin, and very different than most runners out there. Her laps were circling the entire park, all 6 miles of it.
”If you’re actually still here when I make it back around,” Lee replied over her shoulder. Because with how much the man had been struggling, Lee did not expect him to still be out in the park jogging in 40 minutes when she made her way back here.

Lee knew that Tarin hated people comparing him to her ex-husband, and Lee was always quite vocal about the fact that they were different people. So Tarin had a point. But then again, he didn’t because she did know that they were different people.
”I know you’re not him, Tarin, and know there are differences in how you use your powers, in how they work. That’s why I’m not worried about it happening in the future. Before, I was always worried, at least in the back of my mind, about when the next merge was going to happen. Not if, when.
“I’m not worried about that with you, Tarin,” Lee said, looking up at him again. ”I’m not worried because it hasn’t happened to you before. I’m not worried because I know you have better control.”
Lee sat and looked at Tarin for a few moments, giving his hand a squeeze. ”There is no ‘when’ in my mind. The only time there was an ‘if’ was that day.”

”Why didn’t you tell me?”
Lee actually looked over at Tarin now, a little confused about why she hadn’t told him. ”Because then it was over, we got you out of the building, and it didn’t matter?” Lee replied. And to her, it really was that simple.
Her eyes dropped down to look at their hands, still clasped between them. But her thumb had stopped moving. Making it start rubbing the back of his hand again as she sat there in thought.
”I don’t think I realized that’s what was so bad about them…” Lee whispered.
