The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

The man dropped to a knee when she kicked him. That was good. She wasn’t dealing with someone completely out of her league. It still could be tricky with the energy that she currently had, though.
Plus the fact that they were in public
Lee honestly didn’t know what this guy was thinking doing this in a public restaurant in daylight.
But regardless of his reason, when he dropped to his knee, the man’s grip on the young woman’s throat was released and she was free. That was what Lee had been going for, that had been the current most important thing. Especially as he had picked her up off the floor.
Yet, while everyone else in the restaurant seemed to have been screaming, that young woman lunged forward toward her attacker to dig her thumbs into his eyes.
Damn, this girl was feisty, Lee couldn’t help but think. Not that it had saved her, as a moment later the man hit her and she also went flying across the restaurant. If Lee had only had more energy, maybe she could have stopped that. At least stopped the blow from connecting.
But before the young woman hit the wall, she just…kind of stopped in midair. And hung there. Was she the mutant who had done that, or was it someone else in the restaurant?
Lee didn’t have time to ponder that, as at that moment she could hear phone cameras (Really? You scream in fear, but then stick around to record it?), followed by a scream as the man turned to take a swing at her.
Upping her siphoning since it was really starting to look like she needed more energy, Lee easily dodged to the side due to her height and the fact that the man couldn’t really see.
Taking the opportunity of the man being off balance from the unlanded hit, Lee swept his leg, pushing the now exposed back of his shoulder to help tip him over.

Tarin had missed the part where it said to cook the chicken at medium-high heat. That was obviously a very important detail with hwo quickly the chicken had burned.
So Lee read the recipe again more thoroughly as Tarin was scraping the burnt chicken off of the pan. And just as Tarin was asking if the recipe had said anything about oil, Lee was looking up at the cabinets after having just read that, trying to think if there was any.
”Um…Yeah, it does say to add oil,” Lee said, still staring at the closed cabinets. ”It’s possible we have some. If Rachel left some here when she moved out. I know she didn’t take a lot of kitchen stuff when she moved in with Matt.”
That said, Lee stepped forward and started opening cabinets, peering inside to see if she could find any kind of oil. Or anything. ”Do you think that butter would work if we don’t have oil?” Lee asked, glancing at Tarin before turning back to searching the cabinets.
Tarin started spitting out optimistic cliches at that point and Lee looked at him again, an eyebrow raised this time. ”What doesn’t kill me makes me stronger?” She asked. ”Because that’s not true.”

Lee laughed with Will when he commented that he wouldn’t be trying to keep up with her again. ”I do appreciate it. Running gets a little tedious after a couple of hours, even when I’ve got music to listen to,” she told Will.
It really did, that time that Lee ran between the 2 and 3 hour mark out in the park really did seem to drag. At that point, she just wanted to go back home, but she still had too much energy to be sure that she could fall asleep. And if she went home after running but was unable to sleep, really, it made the run completely pointless.
”So, your insomnia..?"
Lee sighed. That was a very complex answer. Because there were so many things that affected when she needed to run.
”Sometimes I need to run a lot,” Lee admitted as she glanced over at Will. ”Though I didn’t really need to run at all for most of the last 6 years.”
Lee paused as they ran, contemplating how much she was wanting to disclose. Though basics wouldn’t hurt, and he already knew that she could sense people she couldn’t see.
”When I’ve got excess energy, like tonight after being at the airport, I cannot sleep because I’ve got far too much energy to be tired. But when this is the case, it normally takes a lot of running to get rid of that amount of energy.”
Tarin knew how long the pasta cooked. That was good, and Lee looked at him expectantly, waiting for the answer. But all he did was pick up the package of pasta.
But then Tarin showed her…And yeah, that made a lot of sense now that Lee thought about it. There had been a lot of different pastas in the store, and the recipe didn’t actually specify what kind of pasta.
Still, couldn’t all of the directions be in one place?
Lee was still mentally complaining to herself about that when she heard Tarin again. And a second later she smelled the burning.
It wasn’t the pot she’d just put on, there wasn’t even the beginnings of bubbles for it to start boiling yet. Then Lee saw Tarin working at the chicken, and when he managed to flip it, the meat was very clearly burned on the one side, while being completely raw still.
”Um…” Lee said as she looked back down at the phone and the recipe. ”I think so. This says ‘medium-high.”
Leaning over to look in the pan, Lee then looked up at Tarin. ”Think we can just…get rid of the burnt pieces and salvage the rest of that?”

Tarin handed his phone with the recipe over and after taking a breath, Lee read it over. Then read it again, frowning. What kind of recipe was this?
”It doesn’t say when we’re supposed to cook the pasta,” Lee told Tarin as she set the phone on the counter and washed her hands. ”But in step 5, it says to save some of the pasta water. Do you think that means it should be cooked by then?”
Lee thought that made sense. They would just call it ‘water’ and not ‘pasta water’ if the pasta wasn’t cooked by that point, right? But if that was the case, why didn’t the recipe just say when to cook the pasta? And for how long?
But Tarin seemed to agree that at least starting the water to boil was a good idea, she could always read through the recipe again while that was happening. So Lee filled the pot Tarin had pulled out with water.
As Tarin moved away from the stove to get the chicken, Lee carried her pot of water over and set it on top, turning it up to high as well.
”I don’t think the recipe says how long the pasta is supposed to cook, either,” Lee said as she watched Tarin dump the pre-sliced chicken into the pan he had put on the stove. Then she made her way back over to his phone to read through the recipe again. ”Do you have any idea how long the pasta needs to cook for?”

The man was silent not only while Lee was talking, but for a while after she had finished speaking as they continued to jog along. And Lee didn’t know what his situation at the moment was. Maybe he was in survival mode and that was all he was capable of doing right now.
Lee knew that she was in no position to judge. She could only offer help when and where she could. But survival mode was nothing to judge harshly, anyway. Too many people were stuck in survival mode especially when it came to mutants in New York.
And she had been right that he had heard her before he should have been able to. At least that made sense.
Then he introduced himself and Lee gave him a friendly smile. ”I’m Lee. And I knew you were up ahead of me before I could see you, which is how I knew you were looking back before you should have heard me,” Lee explained. ”Well, not you specifically. But I knew that someone was up ahead of me.”
As he thanked her, saying that she didn’t have to do all this, Lee waved it off. ”Like I said, Will. It’s not every day someone tries to keep up with me while I’m out running like this. You piqued my curiosity, and I have the time tonight that I could figure it out.”

They were home. They were in their apartment. The ingredients that had been on the list were out of the bags and on the counter.
And somehow they were supposed to use the stove to turn this into an actual meal for them to eat.
Lee just continued to stand there staring at the ingredients while Tarin washed his hands. Then her eyes shot to him when he said the recipe didn’t say what to start first.
”What do you mean it doesn’t say whether to boil the water or cook the chicken first?” Lee asked, reaching her hand out for the phone.
”I know chicken nuggets take forever to cook for how small they are, but water can also take forever to boil. Maybe we’re supposed to start with doing both of them?”
A moment later, Lee realized what she had said and her eyes widened slightly. Do two things at once while cooking? When she highly doubted that she could make something edible while doing a single thing at a time. ”I’m trying to be positive, but this is making it harder, Tarin.”

They got home and Lee was starting to head toward the stairwell as had become habit when she was with Tarin.
Except that Tarin suggested taking the elevator.
Lee stopped and looked at Tarin in surprise, smiling a moment later. ”Sure, we can take the elevator tonight,” she replied, going to stand in front of the doors beside him.
It didn’t take long for the doors to open, the building wasn’t that large, and inside the two of them stepped. Tarin might have even done it without hesitating.
Lee watched Tarin press the button for their floor, and while Tarin was staring at the now closed doors, Lee was watching him. He was definitely still looking anxious and tense. But as the elevator climbed, Lee didn’t see the panic that had been clearly evident the last…Lee wasn’t even sure how many times she’d seen that panic on Tarin’s face, in his eyes in the elevator.
Then the elevator doors opened, and Lee was already smiling as Tarin was quickly stepping out into the hallway. ”It sure is,” Lee said, her smiling widening. Then she stretched up to give him a kiss before turning to head to their apartment.

Lee had felt good during her sparring match with Michael, felt like she was doing well against her. But to hear Michael verbally confirm that she was good and had held her own…
Well, Tarin telling her that she was good and impressive in the ring had felt good, but Michael telling her just hit differently. Like she had been doing the right thing with her training despite what the trainers and guys at the gym had said over the years.
And Michael knew someone else who could be a good sparring partner for Lee. And who Lee could be good to help teach and expand her skills? That was a surprise. Other than Kevin, Lee had never once even really considered that she might teach someone how to fight. She didn’t have ‘training’, as had often been pointed out to her, so how could she teach?
”I can’t say I’d be able to go full tilt often,” Lee said, glancing over at Tarin before turning back to Michael. ”I was in rough shape after our match. But I’d appreciate an introduction.”

”Why doesn't that surprise me?” Lee asked with a teasing smile. Was she being pessimistic about dinner? Yes, but it would be fun still.
Right?
Since they hadn’t in reality bought a whole lot, it really didn’t take long before they were back out on the street and making their way home. And as they walked, Tarin started giving a talk about being positive.
”Well, I’m positive that we’re going to have a good night,” Lee said, smiling up at Tarin. ”How’s that?”

That was going to be a problem for an hour from now. That really did not sound like a very good solution to Lee. In an hour, they were going to be standing in the kitchen, all of these ingredients on the counter in front of them.
And they were supposed to turn those ingredients into actual food somehow.
Watching as Tarin put two packages of chicken into the basket with the other ingredients, Lee took a deep breath. That was the last thing, they were actually doing this.
When he asked if there was anything else they needed or that they wanted, Lee shook her head. She wanted to tell him that they had all of their takeout menus at home, so after they messed up their second attempt, they could order something.
But Tarin kept sounding so sure that they could actually do this. So she kept the takeout thought to herself. ”No, I think that’s everything,” she ended up replying. ”Let’s pay so we can get this disaster started.” She was only partially joking.

Lee laughed softly as she heard Tarin repeat her use of ‘dear’. At least if nothing else, it would be a fun, enjoyable evening. Even if she was still doubting her ability to cook.
And then there was the wall of pasta. Lee hadn't really realized that there were this many types of pasta; with not cooking, Lee had had no reason to go down this aisle.
Before Lee had found the right pasta, or even just one that would work for what they were supposed to be making for dinner, Tarin managed to find something.
And then they were moving again coming to stop in front of the meat cooler. When Tarin spoke, Lee looked over at him, completely lost. ”It sounds like it would be easier, but I honestly don't know.”

He was silent for quite a while after she gave her answer as they jogged. It made sense; if she had assumed correctly, her answer would give the man quite a bit to think about. If Lee was wrong, well what she had told him would probably be confusing.
The longer that it took for him to respond, the more likely it was Lee figured she was right. If he was confused by something she said, he would have asked about it by now, or told her to get lost, or any one of a number of things other than continuing to jog beside her in silence.
Finally, he broke the silence, and Lee shook her head as she looked over at him. ”No. Sometimes doing nothing is the only thing you can do,” Lee informed him. ”Sometimes you get thrown into a completely different game with that bad you’ve been dealt, and the only thing you can try and do is survive till the end.”
Lee looked forward again and gave a little shrug before continuing in a lighter voice. ”And then there are other times when you do have a choice. Times where you can again choose to do nothing, or you can choose to take the crappy hand you’ve been dealt and turn it into something good. Something that can make the world better.”
Again, Lee let the night descend into silence so that he could think about what she had said. Even if he didn’t think about it too deeply, there was still a lot to unpack there. So Lee gave him the time to do so.
"What, uh... What gave it away?"
Lee looked back over at him and laughed softly. ”Don’t worry, it wasn’t all so obvious that anyone and everyone would know,” she told him. ”I had suspicions with just how carefully you were picking your words when talking about your ‘condition’ because I used to do the same. But then, as I came around this time, I noticed that you were already looking back to me the moment I was able to see you. And I know that I am not loud enough for human senses to have heard me already.”

The man was quite silent after Lee said that she had a similar ‘condition’. That really just confirmed Lee’s suspicions.
Then he asked if things got better.
Lee took a deep breath as she thought about how to answer that question. It was difficult, because the answer really depended on how you looked at things.
Looking over at him, Lee saw a bit of a hopeful expression on his face. ”In a lot of ways, yes,” Lee confirmed. ”It does get easier. And over all, the world is getting better. But as my son recently found out, there’s always going to be bigots.”
Unfortunately, Lee didn’t think that part was ever going to go away. There were always going to be bigots. But things could be done to limit their power, limit how much they felt they could actually spew their hatred in public.
”It really is still a shit hand to be dealt in a lot of ways, but your frame of mind and what you decide to do with what you’ve been given can go a long way.”

Yes, they were two very capable adults who were able to follow directions. Yes, Lee had managed to do a hell of a lot in her life. Things that most people would consider to be far more difficult.
But this was cooking.
”If you say so, dear,” Lee said jokingly as they walked past the different aisles looking for the remaining ingredients.
Then Tarin was heading off down the next aisle, and Lee followed behind.
To find a wall of pasta.
”Spaghetti noodles aren't flat,” Lee said. ”Any time I've had Fettuccine Alfredo, it's had flat noodles.”
