The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"That's not quite what happened, Kev," Lee pointed out. "It was one cartel, and not the whole thing, that came to the village we were building the school in."
But drug cartels were apparently closely followed by the fact that Tarin's father had been able to beat her, sometimes, when they'd spar. "It was just after Columbia and the restaurant,," Lee told Tarin with a shrug. "We were learning. No powers, and it wasn't like what we've been doing with Tony, so he did manage to win sometimes."
And it seemed that Tarin getting home and her subject change did not move Kevin away from the building collapse.
"He asked what happened, so I told him about the spirits there, and how you had them save his uncle and I," Lee told Tarin. "About how I used my powers to figure out where people were in the house after and how we got you out."
"Kevin didn't really understand how I could save you but you weren't necessarily ok, so I explained how long it took me after getting out of the camp."
"Though I still don't quite understand why you don't want people to see you as a hero."
Lee paused and glanced at Kevin before looking back at Tarin. "It's been quite a talk this afternoon. The list started off asking about what happened the weekend he went to Canada and learned about spirit merges."

No, definitely not reporters. Though it had been kind of nice in a weird sort of way to see a couple of the things she had done be in newspapers, none of those had identified her. If she was to come forward for recognition, even just to the people she'd helped rescue, word of her involvement would likely go much further than that.
And Kevin had caught on to the fact that there was a lot more to the story with her mention that everything had been fine because she was there.
But right at that moment, the door was opening and Lee used the fact that Tarin had gotten home as an excuse to delay, if not 'forget' about the last question Kevin had asked.
"Not really, no," Lee said as she looked up at Tarin. "Kevin was ready with his list of questions, so we were just talking about them. And he even learned some things about his father."
Yes, that was a blatant subject change in another attempt to move away from that last question.

Lee laughed slightly when Kevin asked about whether his parents had been X-Men, wanting to make sure that he wasn't going to discover that at school. She had already told him that she wasn't an X-Man, and why that was.
"No, you're not going to find that out at school," Lee assured Kevin. "Neither of us were."
Lee knew why she didn't want the attention from the building collapse making her out to be a hero. She had done too many things in the past that were in the legal grey area if not outright illegal for her to be comfortable with that kind of attention.
"Do I seem like I would want a bunch of reporters around?" Lee asked Kevin instead. "I just don't want that much attention."
Lee just nodded when Kevin asked if it had been because of the collars. Even when she had started allowing contact again, she had still flinched away for a few months when she wasn't expecting a touch. She had been out, saved. She had been okay. But it had taken almost a year for her to be okay again.
"And no, nothing happened thankfully," Lee said. "Because I got in there to him."

Why had she needed to learn how to fight? There were so many reasons… "Well, I should probably stop volunteering for building projects because they never go as planned," Lee said, joking slightly. "Your father and I went to Columbia to help rebuild a school. And your father helped settle some very restless spirits."
"One of the drug cartels down there didn't like what was happening, and they captured your father and a friend. Then after we got home, we went out for dinner, and the whole restaurant was taken hostage."
Lee paused as she watched her son's reaction before continuing. "Things just seemed to keep happening to us, no matter what we did, so I felt like I needed to learn."
Yes, Tarin seemed to be ok now. And he was doing better. But it had taken time and work to get him back to the place he was when Kevin got home from Texas.
"Because some things have lasting effects in your mind," Lee explained. "Like after I got out of the camp. I didn't touch anyone for six months."

How happy and excited Kevin appeared at finding out that not had his father learned how to fight, but that he had actually beaten Lee sparring a few times warmed Lee's heart. She knew that Kevin likely had fewer memories of his father than he should have, they had only moved back to New York less than a year before the ride had closed when Kevin was just 7.
So being able to tell him something good, something simple about his father that made Kevin this happy almost made up for all the negative things he was learning.
"People don't normally like talking about the things that they're scared of," Lee gently pointed out to Kevin.
And everything was ok, because she found Tarin. Eventually.
"I did find him," she confirmed slowly. "And did get him out of there after some time. But, and I hope this is something you never learn yourself, being saved doesn't mean everything is ok right away."

Lee nodded at Kevin's about this aspect of his father's powers. He definitely had been out of his body. "Only that once, but yes," Lee confirmed. "Your father had to learn how the link with spirits when he connected with them worked from the spirit side, and it still took the doc at the mansion and another healer to get him back in his body."
Well, that was mostly true, Lee thought. The DocProf hadn't really helped with that part, but Kevin wouldn't have been there if not for the man that day.
"And yes, your father did beat me sometimes when we sparred," Lee said with a smile. "I want nearly as good back then, we were both learning. But sometimes he did something unexpected, or I'd leave myself open, or he would get me in a hold before I could get out, and he'd win. "
The collapse. Lee couldn't stop the smile from sliding off her face when Kevin brought that up. "We went to help with that building project, and while we were working, I guess there were a couple of spirits that were desperately trying to get Tarin's attention, so he talked to him. And they warned Tarin that the place wasn't built properly and was going to collapse. I didn't hear that, but it was just in time. The ceiling started coming down and suddenly a spirit has grabbed me and I'm being pulled out of the house."
Lee paused as the memory of that moment came to mind; Tarin saying 'I love you', him diving away from the door as the house fell around them and the spirit was pulling her away.
"There were only the two spirits nearby," Lee continued after swallowing. "Tarin got me and your Uncle out. Robert wouldn't let me go back in to find Tarin, so I walked around the outside of the house trying to figure out where people were."
"So when the first cops and firefighters finally started going in, I went with them, telling them where people were. Where I was feeling energy. Until we got to where Tarin was. He'd ended up in like a little hollow, so stuff wasn't on him, but it was small and he's claustrophobic."

Lee realized that she'd walked herself into more questions with talking about staying at the mansion. Though this story wasn't as…bad as some of the ones that Kevin could be asking about.
"No, I didn't go to school there," Lee confirmed. "I stayed there for a little over a month while your father was in the infirmary there. He ended up in a cemetery and was overwhelmed by the number of spirits. It was horrible, but he discovered a new part of his powers: he left his body. Kind of like astral projecting, but he couldn't get back in his body. But we didn't know any of that, it was like he was in a coma for a month."
Lee laughed slightly when she saw Kevin's reaction to the news that his father had learned how to fight. "Yes, he learned a bit. But I still beat him almost every time."
What else didn't Kevin know. That list was probably longer than the list of things that he did know, especially about his parents. And Lee was not going to tell him everything, not by a long shot. "Well, what else is on your list there?"

Kevin seemed to understand what she meant with the Yankees. That was good. That should work if, somehow, at some time, it happened again.
And Kevin didn't understand how people didn't understand that Tarin and his father weren't the same person. "I'm now sure how either, Kev," Lee said.
"And no, I didn't learn to fight from them. Sam, Cold Steel, I met when we literally ran into each other outside the Chinese restaurant. The others, I mostly met at the mansion when I stayed there for a little bit."
But really, where had she learned to fight? Up until Columbia, she hadn't really learned anything. And in Columbia, she had mostly relied on her speed. And after that, as well as merges, she'd had hours to rethink everything.
"To be honest, a lot was self taught," Lee admitted. "Especially when I was younger. Most of the time when I've had to actually fight, I've ended up awake for a long time and spent hours thinking about what I could have done differently or better.
"But your father and I did take some self-defense lessons. And I learned a lot from Blaine."

Lee could tell that Kevin was having trouble understanding this. It had been hard for her to wrap her head around it at first as well.
And he might have more questions about the merging later. That was completely understandable and Lee nodded. "So you know and aren't worrying, I don't expect that to happen with Tarin ever again," Lee told him. "But if you are ever concerned and I'm not around, ask him a question about the Yankees as though he likes them."
Was this why adults were weird about Tarin? And did everyone know about the merging? "Your aunt and uncle knew about it," Lee told Kevin softly. "So do your Uncles Josh and Ash, and your grandma. If my parents know anything about it, it's because Uncle Robert told them."
"But honestly, I'm not sure why everyone is so weird about Tarin," Lee admitted. "It does seem to be humans more than mutants who are weird, doesn't it? So maybe it has something to do with not understanding 'weird'?"

Lee could literally see Kevin putting the pieces together in his head. Spirits forcefully taking energy to interact with the living world. That ghost possession stories weren't far from the truth.
Lee's lips were pressed together when Kevin realized exactly what that all meant and she nodded slightly. "Generally? Yes, that's what that means," Lee told Kevin.
Then Kevin went ahead and asked the most important question.
"That can be difficult to figure out sometimes," Lee said thoughtfully. "And it has happened to Tarin, just twice.
"But they won't act quite right. Or say things weird," Lee told Kevin. "One time I suspected but wasn't sure and said to fix its hair. The spirit tried to smooth your father's hair down."
"I can also feel some extra energy, when that's the case."

"Of course you would have never seen me hurt from that," Lee said as it if should have been obvious. "It was just a couple of bruises that I kept covered. And the last time it happened to your dad was before you were born."
But why would Robert be mad if it was spirits hurting her? "Well, your uncle never really liked your father," Lee explained. "Your uncle didn't think he was good enough for me."
"Those spirits that are able to just take energy…" Lee sighed slightly and looked up at the ceiling as she thought about how to explain this.
"You know those movies where ghosts possess people? Well, that's really not too far off." There was a reason why Lee didn't watch ghost movies when she chose something in the horror genre.

Kevin seemed to be getting part of what she was saying, but definitely not everything. And being her son, the only thing that not further explaining would do would be to cause more worries, if not now, then later when he had more of a chance to think about it.
"The spirits that are able to take energy so they can do things, that includes being able to touch things, people," Lee explained. "And since they were able to take energy, they aren't going to do what your father, or what Tarin, want them to do."
"But when something like that happens, the best way to stop them from being able to take that energy is to make sure there isn't energy to take. And that makes the spirits angry. At me."

"Tarin hasn’t even been here that long…”
Kevin still wanted to know. Even with the knowledge that he wasn't going to like the answer that he got.
Lee nodded and just continued to look at Kevin for another moment before she finally spoke again. "No, Tarin hasn't been here very long," Lee agreed with Kevin. "And your uncle has known him even less time than that. But you're uncle decided that he doesn't like Tarin the moment he found out that his powers are like your dad's."
Lee paused and let that sink in for a moment before she continued. "When your father had trouble with his powers, with those kinds of spirits, your uncle believed that it was your father hurting me," she finally said, her voice quiet.

Kevin did not understand what her having bruises making Robert want to punch Tarin implied, and Lee was glad.
"You're right Kev," Lee said to her son. "Your uncle doesn't really know Tarin."
Lee paused and took a deep breath as she looked at Kevin. To answer the question of why Robert didn't like Tarin would mean she had to tell him things about his father that she didn't want to. Information that Lee was sure Kevin would not like knowing. Things that could change how he felt about his father.
"You're not going to like the answers to those questions, Kevin," Lee told him gently. "Some things are better left in the past."
Lee wasn't refusing to answer Kevin's questions. She was giving him the chance to not find out things he wouldn't want to know.

Kevin's shock and surprise at Lee's answer was pretty much as expected. Lee was pretty sure that Kevin had never even thought about the fact that his uncle might have hit someone when he played hockey.
It only took him a couple moments to realize when exactly Robert had hit Tarin, and that that might have been why she had been mad that morning.
"That is why," Lee told her son. "Your uncle doesn't like Tarin. He saw the bruises I had from that sparring match and decided to punch Tarin."
