The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Tarin wished that he had been able to help Michael more, that he would have been able to give more information. "You did what you were able to do," Lee pointed out to Tarin. "I certainly would have been nice if you had been able to tell Michael more, but it was information that Michael wouldn't have been able to get otherwise. And sometimes, a small, seemingly unimportant detail can be the key."
Just like it would have been nice if they had managed to find something in any of the books they had gone through. But the more that they had looked into, the more that Lee realized that was unlikely. 'Ancient Egypt' had been so much larger and lasted for so much more time than she had previously thought that the likelihood of the information they needed having not only survived time, but had been discovered and then written into one of the books they had gotten from the library was miniscule.
Lee could only hope that Michael had found out more since their talk with Tarin.
"I mean, technically that's true of any organization like this," Lee said with a bit of a frown. "You're probably not supposed to know this stuff about Haven. Not beyond their 'legitimate business' that they do."

Would someone other than herself or Tarin talking to Robert about the merging help him to gain some perspective? Make him possibly understand it a bit better? "I mean, anything is possible?" Lee said with a shrug.
But Lee wasn't counting on Robert actually starting to like Tarin. Like ever. That was fine. Even a distinct lack of hostility would be an improvement, which was sad to say.
Haven did have a lot of resources, at least what she had seen of them 6 years earlier. The fact that the training room (and what she saw of the building) when she'd met Quin had looked pretty much the same, and the fact that Michael was still running security, Lee could only assume that Haven had the same kind of resources and assets.
"Didn't you say Michael was possibly bringing in the X-Men and others too?" Lee asked. She thought she remembered Tarin saying that. "Between their own resources and knowing when and to who they should reach out to when they know they can't accomplish what they need to on their own is good."
Lee paused for a moment, glancing at their hands before looking back up at Tarin. "Though to be honest, if they weren't on our side, I doubt we would know anything about them." Not exactly the most comforting thought, but the truth.

Quin seemed to appreciate the ideas Lee had listed off quickly to make sure that she always had some plastic available to work with. That was good, it meant that Lee hadn't put her foot in her mouth.
As Lee had continued speaking, she noticed that Quin tilted her head - was that confusion? - when Lee mentioned times she hadn't been able to use her powers. Not that such as thing was so drastic or potentially terrifying and disastrous for most mutants as it was for Lee. But it was always a possibility.
Quin didn't question it, though. Maybe she'd run into adapteds and had that experience before, though not necessarily in such deadly circumstances as Lee had had. Wait, the younger woman had been a cop before she had been de-aged. She almost definitely had that experience, Lee corrected herself. The question was whether Quin remembered it.
And that was why Quin was doing this. Working with Michael, and now with Lee, to learn how to actually fight instead of the defensive sparring she'd done in controlled situations.
"I totally get that," Lee said with a nod. "Because sometimes there is no one else to save you. Sometimes you are the one who ends up doing the saving."

Let Rachel and Robert know about what Kevin had learned. Then Lee had another realization: Kevin was likely going to ask Robert himself about not liking Tairn. Or his father.
"Good news is, I think Kevin's realizing on his own how much of an idiot Robert can be," Lee let Tarin know. "Though, I am very tempted to let Robert be blindsided when Kevin asks him why he never liked his father, and Robert have to try to explain that without admitting to not believing or trusting me."
Lee thought that would serve the man right after the decades of not believing her.
When Tarin asked about the book, Lee just shook her head. "Nothing," she said with a shake of her head. "Well, the history and religion are fascinating, but I didn't find anything out about actual magic or anything else that seemed relevant."
Tarin hoped that Michael had things under control. Lee nodded. She hoped so too. "I'm sure things are being figured out. Working with Haven, Michael will have a lot more resources than they would have on their own."

That was true, wasn't it Lee thought. And Kevin had been having a lot of those moments in the last few months. Her ability to fight, both of his parents having been in camps, everything that had happened when his grandparents were there.
And now all of this that had come out that day.
Any one of those things (except maybe her fighting, Kevin had been going to the gym with her for 6 years) would be a lot to try and reconcile.
Kevin was really doing an amazing job at dealing with all of it.
Then Tarin was offering that she could send Kevin to him to answer if he had more questions that pertained more directly to him. "Thanks. I'm not sure how much more there will be about that. Possibly nothing. Possibly a whole lot. But I appreciate it."

Lee gave Tarin a small smile and squeezed his hand when he said he thought she'd done well in answering Kevin's questions. "Thanks," she said softly. She hoped that Kevin felt that, too. It's not like there was anyway she could have prepared herself for this. They didn't write books to help you figure out how to tell your child that their other parent has an unpredictable, but potentially dangerous mutation, afterall.
Tarin thought the idea of Lee and Kevin's father sparring was funny, based on how he laughed slightly. Though he hadn't been anywhere close to being in shape like Tarin was, Kevin's father hadn't been too bad back then; hiking down in Columbia hadn't been too difficult physically for either of them other than the heat.
Things had changed with time, though.
"I guess I can see why he'd be so surprised," Lee said after a couple moments. "When we did that, we were much closer to being evenly matched. If he wasn't fast enough to get a hold locked onto me, I was able to slip away quite often. But most of Kevin's actual memories of his father, well…He'd definitely developed a dad bod by that point."
But then Tarin was asking if she was alright. Lee actually thought about that for a moment before nodding. "It definitely wasn't easy, but I am," she said, then thought for another moment. "I think trying to avoid the merging and not actually going into the details made it easier than with Rachel and Robert somehow."
"And no, I had no warning," Lee continued. "Though I think he was taken aback when I suggested he sit after he said he had a list of questions."

Hearing the tone in Tarin's voice, Lee reached her hand out for his. "A good idea that he will likely never have to use," Lee added, her voice soft but certain.
"He wanted to make sure that he could ask more questions later, and I made aure he knew it wasn't a common or likely thing to happen. It had been 15 years."
What else had Kevin asked about? Lee sat and thought for a couple moments. There had bee a lot talked about in a relatively short time, and it seemed like it had kept coming back to his fathers, and Tarin's, powers.
"He wanted to know if the X-Men taught me how to fight and if that's how I knew them," she continued. "Mentioning when and where I met most of them led to mentioning the astral projection thing as well as the fact that we had both taken self-defence lessons together. I swear, he was just as shocked by that as anything else that he heard."
"But that led to asking why we needed to learn, and wanting to make sure that he wasn't going to be surprised to hear at school that his father and I were X-Men," Lee said, then sighed and shook her head.
Had there been anything else that Kevin had asked that she or Kevin hadn't already told Tarin about? "I think that's about when you came in. But I have a feeling that the questions are never going to end now."

Lee was about to argue Tarin's comment about him being terrifying, but a fuzzy memory came to the surface. Kevin's father had said something similar when he had first told Lee about the merging. And she had been scared; At that time, there was no knowledge that she could end merges by siphoning his energy, there was no thought that they could potentially be good.
"Other than explaining that the spirits get mad at me when I'm trying to end the merges, I didn't really try to convince Kevin of anything," Lee told Tarin.
"I framed most of the talk about powers on his dad unless his question was about you specifically. I think it might have broke his brain for a moment when I told him that the spirits had been controlling his father's body when I got hurt. But he was confused about why Robert had been mad at his father when it had been the spirit's doing."
"He was also concerned about how he would be able to figure it out if it were to happen again and I wasn't around. So I gave him a suggestion that should work, but also told Kevin that I wasn't expecting it to happen again."

Tarin questioned her surprise that Kevin, being her son, had prepared a written list of questions to ask her.
That…That did actually make sense. He'd seen her doing similar things, for any situation, his entire life.
But still, he was only 13.
"Ok, totally fair," Lee conceded after a couple of moments. "Still, I was hoping that he wouldn't be asking all of those questions."
Then Tarin was asking her how much she had told Kevin, and asking how persistent he'd been about all of his other questions. Exactly what she had thought that Tarin would want to know. And exactly what Lee did not want to talk about with Kevin around.
"He definitely was about the spirit merges," she said. "He started with wanting to know why he had to go to Canada. Though he did not believe me when I gave the reason being to stop Rachel being nosy.
"I tried telling him that there were a few strong spirits take energy from you against your will. He must have realized that I was leaving something out because he kept pushing. Though, he doesn't understand why Robert didn't like his father because of what the spirits did, or why he passed that dislike on to you."

Kevin simply nodded slowly when she asked if he was alright. The way that he nodded, Lee wasn't really sure that he was fully alright, but at least he wasn't freaking out about the knowledge.
And he had a million questions, but didn't know how to ask them. It was Lee's turn to nod. "Understandable," she replied. "When you figure them out, I'll do my best to answer them."
As Kevin went silent again, Lee glanced over at Tarin, who was looking uncomfortable sitting there as well. While the conversation with Kevin could happen with Tarin in the room, Lee didn't want to have the expected conversation with Tarin while Kevin was still around.
"If you don't have any other questions right now, you can go think if you want," Lee offered. When she had something to really think over, Lee preferred to do it while walking or at night when she was guaranteed to be alone. Kevin, she had discovered over the years as he'd had to sort through much smaller issues, disappeared into his room.
Kevin looked at his mum again for a moment before nodding. "Yeah. Thanks mum," he said before pushing himself off the couch and heading to his bedroom.
Once Kevin was safely out of earshot, Lee moved closer to Tarin on the couch. "That ended up being a lot more than I was expecting," she said. "He came out with a list of questions on his phone."

Lee was not surprised by the widening of Kevin's eyes as she spoke. It really was all rather unbelievable. He didn't say anything, though, or ask any other questions at the moment.
Then Tarin spoke, his voice also quiet, and talked about how what he felt while he was in that hole during the collapse. And about how it wasn't something that they could test out to see if it was something he was capable of because it was so unpredictable. And so potentially dangerous.
Lee gave Tarin a slight, tight lipped smile before turning back to Kevin. "I know it's a lot to take in," Lee said. "I had trouble with it when your father first told me about it, too."
The merging on its own was a lot to take in, but combined with everything else that Lee had told him, it was A. LOT. Kevin probably hadn't been expecting the scope of even one of these revelations when he had come up with his list of questions, never mind all of them.
"Are you already after all of these answers?" Lee asked Kevin gently. "Do you have any other questions right now?"

Were the merged beings good? Lee almost answered immediately that no they weren't. That was why she'd always worried about them, why the idea of them scared her. Much more than merges with spirits.
But that wasn't entirely true. There was Romania…and most merges were not nearly as dangerous, to her definitely, when compared to spirit merges. But she could never tell what to expect.
"I've seen three merges," Lee told Kevin, her voice still not up to normal volume again. "That one was the first. It saved our lives. I don't think both of us would have gotten out of there if the merge hadn't happened."
"But it was not good," Lee continued. Not with what it had done, how it had killed the guards.
"The second one I saw wasn't good either. It seemed to want to destroy things, and caused a lot of damage. I had to ask Sam for help with it, and he came with some of the X-Men."
"The third…" This was really the only good merge, yet was the hardest to talk about. Yet, Lee had actually told Kevin about this one, sort of, when he was younger and wanting to hear stories of her 'adventures'. She'd told the very short version because really, who would have believed it when she said she had died and a unicorn had brought her back?
"Do you remember the story I told you the day you met Blaine? About the unicorn? That was the third merge, and was a very good thing at the time."

Kevin didn't understand, didn't know what Lee meant that the merge created a new being.
That was understandable. Even more so than the spirit merges, this was the hardest part to wrap your mind around. At least with the spirit merges, a comparison could be made with possession in horror movies to help explain.
This was unique.
"A completely new being. New person. Mutant," Lee tried explaining further. "One that had never existed before and that stops existing when the merge ends.+
"It doesn't look like your father or the person he merged with, but looks completely different. With different powers. And you have no control over what it does. But you can see what is happening, hear what's going on, like you're in its head. Can even feel some of what it feels, emotions, powers. Hear its thoughts…"
As she had spoken, describing her memories of the merge during the camp breakout, Lee's eyes grew distant, her voice gripping a little quieter.
"How do you know all that?"
Kevin's voice brought Lee back to the present and she blinked as she looked at him again. "Because your father merged with me during the camp breakout here in New York," Lee replied, her voice still quiet.
"That might not have been what happened to Tarin in the collapse, your father was never able to properly explain to me the feelings he got before a merge. It may have just been an anxiety or panic attack. But it's better to be careful."

Kevin was really thinking about what Lee had said, about her reasons for doing what she had done. And the reasons why she didn't care if people thought she was a hero.
After a short while, Kevin said that he thought he understood. He thought that he would like that recognition, though.
Lee nodded. "And it's perfectly fine wanting to be recognized for what you do," Lee said. She just didn't care about getting more recognition than she had already received. "But we do things because they're right, not just to get rewarded, right Kevin?"
"Well duh," Kevin replied, actually rolling his eyes a bit. "It's not like I'm going to get a cat stuck in a tree down and expect to get paid."
Well…that was definitely an answer, wasn't it, Lee thought.
Kevin was not leaving the collapse alone. Lee looked over at Tarin, who had made his way over to sit in the chair by the desk. Lee had hoped to never have to tell Kevin about this, not since his father had disappeared and it wasn't a concern any more.
But Kevin's earlier words about not wanting to be surprised about his parents being X-Men, and finding that out at school, came back to Lee. And there were people at the mansion who knew about the merges.
Since she had offered to answer his questions, he deserved to hear it from her rather than to be surprised by it at school.
Lee took a deep breath as she leaned back on the couch, glancing at Tarin before looking back at her son.
"If your father was still here, we probably would have told you about the spirit merges before now," Lee admitted to Kevin. "But since it wasn't something we needed to worry about, I didn't want you to have to think about that about your father."
"But there was something else possible with your father's powers. He was able to…in very emotionally stressful situations, often quite dangerous ones, his powers would cause his body to…" Lee paused a moment in thought before continuing, lifting her hands and bringing them together to interlace her fingers. "Merge together with someone else if he was touched, creating an entirely new being. Unlike with the spirits, neither individual would be in control; this new being would have its own mind and thoughts and goals."
"Your father was able to feel if this was going to happen, and he would do everything he could to keep anyone from touching him, but he wasn't able to stop it."
Lee paused again and took a breath as she glanced over at Tarin again. "It's never happened to Tarin before," she continued quietly after a moment, turning her eyes back to her son. "But it's possible that that might have happened during the collapse if anyone has touched Tarin."

It had certainly been an afternoon. Tarin did not look at all comfortable as he said there, but he also tried to avoid all mention of both the merge and the climate whenever he was able to. So Lee could understand why Tarin would feel uncomfortable, especially without knowing how much detail Kevin had been given.
And Lee couldn't exactly tell Tarin what she'd left or with Kevin sitting there.
"That doesn't have anything to do with the collapse. I was just filling Tarin in on what else we had talked about," Lee told her son.
She then sat looking at him for a couple moments before she spoke again. "Not everyone wants to be a hero," Lee said softly. "I don't think there's been a single thing I've done in my life that I've done thinking it was heroic. I've simply done what I needed to do or thought I should do in terrible situations to protect myself and those I love. And if there was any recognition I felt I needed, I have gotten it from the people who matter."
