The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Lee could tell that Kevin didn't really buy it when she said that the trip had been to keep Rachel from being nosy. Yes, Lee had wanted Kevin out of the city to keep him safe, but Lee had worried about Rachel wanting to know what was going on and showing up at the shop, possibly at the worst possible moment. With Kevin in tow.
But rather than question that, Kevin decided to ask how those kinds of spirits could be dangerous.
"Even Tarin, who as you said, always has control of his powers can have trouble with them," Lee tried to explain. "Those kinds of spirits can take energy from him, even when he's fighting that. And with that energy, they can actually do things. Move things.
"The spirits that would even try to do that were not good people in life," Lee continued. "When they're trying to do…whatever it is that caused them to stick around as a spirit, and someone tries to take that away from them, they get angry. Spirits, just like people, can be dangerous when they're angry."

Lee thought that Kevin looked a little nervous and unsure when she suggested that he sit down. Lee had simply suggested it because if he had a list of questions, it was likely going to take a while, and Lee wasn't eager to sit looking up at him the entire time.
But Kevin still sat down and looked at his phone. As she waited, Lee set the book on the coffee table and turned slightly on the couch to look at her son.
He had written all of his questions down so that he didn't forget any. That was smart, Lee thought. Though it certainly hadn't seemed that way over the years, Kevin had definitely learned from her quite well.
And Lee was proud of that. Right up until Kevin asked about the sudden trip to see his grandparents with Rachel.
Maybe it would have been good if he hadn't learned quite so well.
Lee nodded slightly as she looked at Kevin. "Do you remember when you got back how I explained that I was helping Tarin with a problem he had with his powers?" Lee asked Kevin. That was what she had vaguely explained as she reason he was moving in. Plus the fact that he had still just been living in the back of the shop.
"That's exactly what I was doing that weekend when you were with Aunt Rachel," Lee continued. "There are a few spirits who are strong and can be dangerous. And you know how nosy she can be, especially with me. The best way to make sure she didn't poke her nose in, especially since she was watching you, was to get her out of the city. Taking you to see your grandparents seemed like the easiest way to do that."

Lee may have been focused of the reading, trying to parse anything useful out of a book written thousands of years after the fact, but that didn't stop her from noticing Kevin making his way out of his room.
Though Lee initially didn't think much of it, figuring that he was going to the kitchen for a drink, or a snack, before he'd head back to his room and ignored her until it was time for dinner.
Except Kevin didn't head to the kitchen. He was making his way into the living room.
Lee was definitely a little surprised. There wasn't enough time to go to the gym before dinner, so she really wasn't sure what would have prompted this. Lee she tried not to show her surprise, not to make too big of a deal of it as she closed the book and looked up as Kevin came around the front of the couch.
And spoke before she had a chance to ask what was up.
A list. Of questions.
With the amount of time that had passed since Lee had told Kevin she would answer any questions he had, Lee had been hoping that he had forgotten about that promise.
Apparently not.
Was she ready to answer this list of questions? She wasn't even sure what questions he had put on his list, but Lee was pretty sure that she wouldn't be ready to give her son those answers for another decade.
She had told Kevin she would answer them, though. Nodding, Lee took a deep breath to prepare herself. "If it's taken this long to make the list," she said, looking up at Kevin standing in front of her. "You're probably going to want to sit. What's first?"

Lee was seriously starting to think that she was going to have to find something else to keep her occupied during the day once Kevin was off at the mansion. Without it taking so long in the mornings now for her to get anything resembling energy, even with going running in the mornings with Tarin, Lee was going to get finished with her paperwork for the bar far too early in the day to keep herself occupied without being bored out of her mind before Tarin gets home.
But that was a problem for later, after Kevin had moved to the mansion.
Even if Kevin was still spending the majority of his time in his room. On his computer.
At least he was more than willing to venture out a few times a week to head to the gym, so Lee was able to spend that time with her son. And Kevin was doing a good job with the lessons that she was giving him.
Even if a number of the trainers, and fighters, who were at the gym at the same time thought that she was teaching Kevin the wrong things.
But since finding something else to keep her occupied was a future problem, Lee settled for reading more of one of the books she and Tarin had gotten from the library to research any information they could find about this ancient Egyptian mystic Michael had come to Tarin about.

"February?" Lee asked, shocked. "That is literally still winter. How can they say that's spring training?"
It was absolutely ridiculous. Though, Lee thought, Americans were a little crazy with the timing of their sports seasons. Football didn't finish up until February or March, after all.
Michael definitely seemed to have quickly settled in with Tarin holding him, even with the bit of shifting around Tarin did of him.
Lee smiled and took the opportunity to close that space on the couch so that she could lean her head against Tarin's shoulder.

"In March?" Lee loolked at Tarin a little incredulously at that. March was still winter, and they started spring training for baseball then?
That was probably another of those weird American things that Lee was never going to get used to no matter how long she lived here for.
Not that it was going to keep her from watching with Tarin. Especially not when Kevin wasn't going to be there. That was something else that Lee was probably not going to get used to any time soon. At the moment, Kevin was just hiding in his room, but soon he was going to be moved into the mansion.
Tarin took Michael, well not more comfortably, but at least more easily this time, and Lee just smiled as she saw how Tarin settled the boy down beside him. And it did look nice and comfortable.
"That's possible," Lee agreed with a smile as she looked over at Michael with his hand in his mouth now. "Though that's one of my favourite places, so I understand why he's so content there."

Somehow, Lee didn't think that was what Michael was doing. Lee didn't think that Michael even had an idea what was on the tv.
"Hopefully they will start the season better," Lee replied. "Though, I'll actually be able to watch from the beginning of the season, too, so hopefully that will help?"
They had already had this discussion, and Lee didn't think that the magic was real, but Tarin did at least somewhat believe in this interdimensional hat magic.
And maybe the Mets would do better next year.
Michael was not interested in laying down, but then Tarin offered, said to let him know if she needed a break. Lee looked over at him with a slight smile. Did that mean he was offering to hold Michael now? The only reason he had before was because he had even less idea about how to make a bottle than holding babies.
"If you don't mind," Lee replied, prepared to pass Michael over when Tarin was ready. "Maybe he'll settle down better for you."

Tarin felt that this was one one of the few times that he actually managed to say something right, to get his thoughts out the way he meant them.
Lee was glad that he had been able to explain it. It really had helped her.
And as Michael yawned again, Lee looked down at him. "Oh, it looks like hell fall asleep sooner rather than later," Lee commented as she finally took her hand from Tarin's so she could attempt to lay Michael down in her arms.
Even as he yawned again, Michael struggled against Lee's attempts. "And yet he's going to fight with every bit of strength in his little body," Lee continued with a slight smile.

Tarin was glad. That wasn't a surprise considering what the alternative would have been. But Lee shook her head when Tarin apologized. "No, that…"
Lee bit her lip slightly as she tried to find words for how it had all felt. "All of that. It helps to think about it in that way," Lee told him. "For it to not just be part of some big, horrible plan."
Because on top of the idea that some kind of…being…somewhere had planned for everything to happen to Lee, if it was all going to happen like that, the literally thousands of hours she had spent over the years anxious, worrying, planning…
Those had all been pointless.
"When did that happen?”
Lee turned to the tv again and was surprised when she saw the score.
"I'm ont sure," Lee admitted. "Maybe when you were talking about choices?"

Lee sat and listened as Tarin spoke. And went on, and on. It seemed he had thought about this a lot. It made sense, though; there were a lot of things that had happened where if only one of those things had not happened or been different, Tarin's entire life would be different.
Any one of them being different likely would have resulted in Tarin not having come through the rift.
And he felt like everything in his life had been building up to that night in Central Park.
Which in a way did still make sense.
Tarin went on, explaining how he thought she fit in with all that. And how the universe may have helped him be exactly where he needed to be, with her nearby as she was able to help.
Not because she was 'meant' to help, or was somehow made to.
And that through everything, Tarin thought it was her choices, both that night and before hand, that had brought her there.
As Tarin finished speaking, Lee looked up at him again with a small, grateful little smile. If everything that had happened wasn't huge series of very uncanny coincidences, that was a much better and easier way to think about her life.
It didn't change the bad and horrible things that had happened in her life, the tough times she had been through. Nothing could change that. But the things she'd done and decisions she'd made being her choice rather than somehow fated was easier to deal with.
She hadn't needed to go go out that night. Lee had even tried, however briefly, to talk herself out of it. And with what he had been planning on doing once he was able make himself move from his curled up position against the tree would have meant she wouldn't have heard anything else about it.
Except for when the news reported the murderer was dead, revealing his name to the public.
"I'm glad I decided to go that night," Lee said softly. "I'll never regret that decision."

Tarin was very right, so much of what had happened with them did feel very uncanny. All of the vastly different things that had to line up exactly for things to have happened as they had.
Because honestly, even their initial meeting 6 years earlier had been necessary for them to have ended up here. Without him ending up outside the shop at the same time that she had been there, it wouldn't have mattered whether she had recognized the murders, had realized the spirit behind them. Lee would have had no idea where to go or who's body the spirit was in.
"But that's just it," Lee said, her voice a whisper as her eyes dropped down to look at their hands. "If it wasn't just an uncanny coincidence, then that means that everything had to happen."
Accepting everything that happened to her during her life, and knowing that it made her the person she needed to be that night in the park was one thing.
But thinking that every single one of those things had been meant to happen to her…

That was also a very good point. What were the chances that Lee would have been at the shop, pounding on the door and calling for Kevin's father to answer because he hadn't shown up for Kevin at the same time that Tarin had wandered by.
With Tarin walking back and forth a couple times before Lee had confronted him.
What were the chances that that would have all lined up? Because Tarin had come across to this world before the rift was closed, and Lee hadn't descended on the shop until a couple days after.
"I'm simply glad that I was," Lee said softly as she turned to look up at Tarin. "Not at all sorry. But if all of that wasn't coincidence…"

"Probably right about the time you think.”
Lee squeezed Tarin's hand slightly and took a slow breath.
That…really did make a lot of sense. So many things had to have worked out perfectly for her to have found Tarin that night, for her to have been able to stop the merge without the 'solution' being the one Tarin had been trying to do for a good chunk of that weekend.
She had to have come to the realization that night, Rachel had to have gotten to the apartment to watch Kevin pretty much exactly when she had, Lee had to have taken that exact route through the park and been passing Tarin at that very moment to have heard him speak.
Even if she had discovered Tarin there in the park at another moment in time, even just a few minutes difference would have resulted in very different outcomes that night.
And while Lee was very glad about the outcome, if it wasn't coincidence, that implied that everything that happened in just the right way that night had been 'meant' to happen.
Lee didn't want to think about it that way, either. Because if that night was meant to happen the way that it did, that would mean that every other hard and horrible thing that had happened in her life had been meant to happen as well.
Because without them, she wouldn't have been the person capable of dealing with that night.
"Astronomical, probably," Lee replied softly. "But still technically possible."

Michael was still flailing around his jellyfish as he bounced on Lee's lap.
At least he was going to tire himself out, Lee thought.
As the next batter hit the ball, Tarin spoke again. Turning to look at him, Lee reached her free hand out for his. If Lee thought about it she had a guess around what time that Tarin stopped believing in coincidences.
But had they actually ever talked about it?
Not that Lee would have called the fact that she had recognized that monster's method of killing a coincidence.
"You did?" she asked, the playfulness out of her voice leaving just a bit of curiosity. "When was that?"

Lee heard the ball hit the bat and she turned to look at the tv once more. To see the ball flying. Sailing…
Over the wall.
"Faith."
The timing of that couldn't have be worse. Or, Lee supposed, better for Tarin.
And to top it off, Michael chose that m oment to shake his jellyfish and squeal.
"Really? You too?" Lee asked, looking down at Michael.
Shaking her head, Lee turned to look at Tarin before leaning in for a kiss. "Seriously, though. This is getting harder to believe this is all coincidence."
