The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Mae blushed a little. It was hard to say something to bring heat to her face, but that one did it. "I'm glad you don't mind it. I just, You're someone I wanted to hang onto. And, for me, that means protecting too. If someone tried to hurt you, it's not that I wouldn't think you could stand up for yourself, but, I also feel you're worth standing up for too? It's complicated. Heck, relationships are complicated. My last one was a royal mess and I just...I don't want to feel like I wasn't good enough or I didn't do enough...."
Mae listened to the ideas, and felt herself smiling. "Camping actually sounds really nice. And dinner, too. You would look amazing in a suit. You look good in everything you wear, but that would be extra fun...
"What do you say we go camping next time you can get away? We can find somewhere quiet, up in the mountains..." She rested her head against Seven's shoulder, enjoying the sound of that.
Mae had a partial glance at Seven, and it was hard not to giggle at the attempt of being seductive. Okay, they would have to work on that at least. But Mae didn't mind being the teacher. In some ways, it was more fun like that. Mae sort of liked the idea that only she would see a certain side of Seven, and try to bring out the more romantic nature.
She nodded as Seven commented on work, and didn't object. She would have reached up and touched Seven's cheek at the promise, but holding a taco and then touching someones face was not cute at all. She focused on finishing her food, already thinking forward. "I know I sound like a broken record by now, but I'm kinda fond of you. I just...I have something worth protecting." She looked around the empty living room, and that concept hit a little closer to home. She...really didn't own much. A lot of her books were from the library, she didn't own electronics because she broke them. She had more money in savings just because she got paid well and just lacked interest in what to spend it on. That idea made her smile, and she looked over at Seven.
"Is there anything you've ever wanted to do? Or like, anywhere you've ever wanted to go? Maybe it's stupid, but, it would be nice to just, get away sometime. I always tell myself I should take a vacation, but then I just, chicken out. The idea of being in a car has been stressful enough, so I just stay in the city. I...Honestly, I don't think I've ever been outside this state."
Mae had to focus on cooking and not turning back around dragging Seven back to the bedroom. Food first, fun later. But it was strange how one word sent shivers up her spine. It was just the fact that Seven was saying it, and the sort of affectionate twist it was given was hot.
"Can't say I could go anywhere else in this, but I'm glad you appreciate the view."
She finished with the meat, having used a seasoning mix this time to save a little energy, and then plated enough for both of them. She gave Seven a rather longer than normal kiss, then sauntered back to the living room. Curling up, she tucked her legs under, a little cold now that she was away from the stove. Maybe she should have grabbed pants after all.
"You working tomorrow?" Mae asked, taking a bite of her taco. She had a normal shift again, which promised to be uneventful. When Seven sat next to her she scooted close, leaching body heat.
Mae felt a little disoriented when Seven left. Being in the middle of kissing, being distracted by coffee, and then having the other take off to go retrieve said coffee was a little bit of a mood shift. She wondered if she should clean up, but also figured that was something more fun with company. In the end she stretched back out and shut her eyes, waiting for Seven to return.
For safety, she let her powers compress against her neck. Outside the bubble, she could hear when Seven returned, and relaxed. No intruders, the apartment was secure again. She let the dead zone return to it's normal strength.
Babe. That hit a little chord in Mae and she slithered back against Seven, going for their neck with a kiss this time instead of lips. "I'll get you a whole collection of switchblades, kay? First, you, me, shower." It wasn't a question. It was the new stages of this relationship and Mae was having far too much of a good time getting closer with Seven.
Some time later, and probably a small increase to their waterbill for the day, Mae yawned a little and tried to focus on food for them. All the activity today made it much harder to focus. "Tacos okay?" She pulled out the ground beef, knowing at least this wouldn't take long. They had bought pre-cut lettuce at least, and shredded cheese. Toast up some shells, slice a tomato, and they would be done.
Mae leaned against the oven for heat. She had stolen one of Seven's oversized shirts, and it seemed even bigger on her. She liked how much shoulder it showed off. It was flirty in it's own way.
Mae forced herself to stop fussing, but made a little face at Seven still. "I know it's probably stupid, I just... It bother's me when you get your face hit." She kissed Seven on the lips this time, and whispered against their mouth. "Makes it harder to be affectionate when I don't want to hurt you, you know? Beside the whole, brain injury debate." She leaned so their foreheads touched. She was less aggressive with the contact than she tended to be, a bit on the cuddly side now.
After a few moments like that she pulled away and nested back in her comfy spot. She made a noise that almost qualified as a purr at the mention of a shower later. Then she blushed. She didn't embarrass easily, but something about the way Seven responded to her pet names brought it out from her. The warmth felt intense and nice.
"I don't know, you've always sort of called me nick-names and it felt fun. This one just sort of, happened. I just, I don't have a lot of ways to just 'claim' you. Honey is just, it feels like I get to acknowledge you're mine, you know? As dumb as that sounds."
Then she paused, and groaned. "We won't have coffee in the morning now. Ughhhh, that's going to suck. Talk about forgetting the building was on fire..."
Mae made herself comfortable, positioned so she could look at Seven's face while still being held. She reached up and gently touched the spot where they had been hit, at least feeling glad it didn't seem like it would leave much of a lasting mark. It was selfish, but she really didn't like things hurting Seven's face. A cut on the arm, even the torso, those could go away faster. She didn't want to see any long term damage to someone she cared about, and injuries to the head? Those seemed harder to heal.
"No one can be a hero for everyone, I'm glad you're one for me at least. Maybe that just makes me a little greedy...but after having been disappointed in the past, I don't care if I am a bit self-interested now."
She ran her fingers across Seven's arm, tracing down toward their hand. It was sort of soothing. She didn't do it light enough it would tickle, because that would ruin the moment.
"I'll talk about it, eventually. I just, I don't want to jump to conclusions right now." she paused, realizing how much soot she still had on her, and made a face.
"F***, you just had a shower and now you look like you cuddled with a chimney sweet. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to do that honey!" The phrase slipped out for the second time that day, and she blushed, putting a hand over her mouth. "Oh, I'm sorry, I did it again. I never really asked you how you felt about things like that."
Seven wasn't big on words, but today, they were saying all the things Mae really needed to hear. She loosened her death grip a little as she listened, curling up a against Seven like a cat. Well, a large cat. Maybe she was more like some type of lynx or wildcat that thought it was a house cat?
She chuckled when Seven complimented her behavior, sighing.
"You are much more the comic book hero than I am. I just, did what I could with powers that honestly are not very useful in those sorts of situations. Heck, I made it more dangerous for you by being there. You're lucky you could even teleport with me, since my powers shut everything off..." she shivered slightly at that memory. While she had been relieved Seven was there, it was also a bit frightening. What if they hadn't been able to teleport at all? Would Seven have stayed? Mae didn't like the idea of them both getting hurt because her powers.
She smiled a little though, despite the anxiety she felt. "Hey, I've always been able to at least throw a punch. You just always seem to catch me when I'm a hot mess instead of just hot." she returned the cringe-worthy puns, and kissed Seven on their cheek.
How was she holding up? Mae looked away, feeling bothered again. "I'm...okay. The excitement wasn't so bad. Honestly, most buzz I ever got in a coffee shop. But, I feel like I remembered something that I didn't ever want to know. It's not the fire itself..." She had a distracted look and went back to her cuddling. She wasn't even sure if she was ready to deal with what her mind was processing.
Mae laughed. Now that the awkward part of the date was over, she actually found it easier to get along with Sam. She liked the genuine side of people, even if they came with a ton of horrible dad jokes. "You just want me to say 8.5 because you hope I'll just round up to 9 for the ease of it. Don't be making up scores on your own!"
She made sure she had all her belongings before standing, "Plus, I have high standards. If I go bragging about an 8.5 someone will know I'm lying. An 8 will get interest without my credibility being damaged." She had a way of looking insanely serious about this, while still having a twinkle of amusement in her eyes.
They walked toward the door, and Mae shook her head, grinning again. "I'm a New Yorker, born and raised. I am close enough to walk, and no one wants to pay a cab fare when they don't have to. Thank you for the offer though, and really, thanks for the nice date. I'm sorry I had to bruise your ego." She pretending to create an imaginary band-aid in the air for his bruised ego, then winked. "Here's to finding you a better follow up date though. I'll see you around, Sam."
With that, she took off toward home, feeling at least glad she hadn't needed the distraction to escape. She had enjoyed herself, and the desert had really been great.
Mae felt a little odd going out for the night, but Seven got a last minute job, and she was feeling a little restless. They had a number of beers in the fridge, but nothing Mae would drink, and that meant venturing out to a bar for something decent. Bundling up in more conservative attire, she had a pair of comfortable jeans, a loose T, and hair pulled back into a high pony-tail. She was hoping the appearance would keep unwanted attention away, especially after her last fiasco getting a drink. Her back still stung at the memory.
This time, she had a phone, she had Seven's number programmed in and the promise help would come swiftly if something went amiss. Mae felt she could handle herself, but it also felt nice to have someone around that cared.
The bar she chose was a calm one. It tended to be less frequented because the drink prices were higher, but it was secure, and you got what you paid for. Going to a cheap place got her a busted lip. This seemed like the better option.
Pulling up a chair, Mae ordered Amaretto and Coke, and glanced up at the nearest TV. Her powers were tethered to her neck, a tiny shimmer like a necklace resting near her collarbone. She forgot how odd it was having electronics around her.
When the drink came back, she smiled and took a sip, and momentarily considered the menu to see if she wanted to eat here too. She felt calm. A lot of people who went out like this would be around because they had something to work through. Anxiety, frustration, depression. Or they were just looking for fun. Mae almost laughed to herself. How many people went out because they had nothing else to do? Hopefully Seven wouldn't be out late, and then she could just go home.
Mae was quiet most of the way back to the apartment. Seven wasn’t the only one who was tired, and Mae felt like a million thoughts were now trapped in her mind. Fire, Seven, the way her powers had booted them outside the shop when they tried to use Seven’s powers. Mae found the groceries where they had been left, and luckily anything that would have needed to be cold was already put away. The rest she took care of, They would still need coffee after all.
Once that was finished, she found the first aid supplies and some aloe Vera. Lathering a decent amount on her skin she flinched as the cold liquid soothed the burn, then wrapped it the rest of the way. It shouldn’t scar, the impact in her mind from This would last longer.
Escape, powers. Why was that still bothering her? She knew Seven’s abilities didn’t work in the dead zone. The second they passed through the phone it must have gotten shut off. No power. A boat...A boat.
Mae put a hand to her mouth slowly, almost missing when Seven sat next to her. She felt a million walls suddenly go up in her mind. No no no. She turned and wrapped Seven into a rather forceful hug, despite the fact she was still probably covered in soot herself. ”I...am really glad you were there.”
Mae was patient, but even she had a certain amount of stress when they were left outside a burning building and Seven went back inside.
She felt her fists shake, her jaw taught with effort not to yell, not to get upset. Seven fought, all the time. Seven won all the time. But this was fire, this was a whole lot of fire, and it was making her pulse race in a way she did not like.
Her arm was fine except for a small red hand-print around one wrist. There the skin was tender, but with quick first aid it shouldn't blister.
She was okay. Seven was in the fire, and she was not okay with that.
"So help me, Sev, you have two minutes to get your ass out here or I'm bustin' the door down and going after your ass...." she muttered to herself finally. Almost on cue, Seven appeared on the ground in front of her and she breathed again. Then she blinked, and frowned. "He f***ed with your face! Tell me you did more damage to that ***** or so help me, I'll go back in there..." She was threatening to march back and kick the fire mutants butt, while simultaneously scooping her arms around Seven and frantically checking for other injuries.
Inside the building, Blue would have to admit they had gotten the losing side of this. Taking an elbow to a knife wound was not something he would have ever wanted to experience, and there was blood. There was...quite a bit more blood than he had first thought. Pain had caused the weapon to fall, and he could hear sirens in the distance. Like a blue ghost, he slipped out the back, and hobbled toward the only place he could think: Juniper's apartment. But he made a note this wasn't over. They would have a rematch someday, he was sure of it.
The kid was confident. Honestly, Mae wished she had that level of energy when she was younger. Saving a backpack had been one thing, but actually fighting would have been another matter. Mae had to wonder how the kid knew so much about these sorts of situations. Did she get mugged a lot? Or...did she mug people. That, was probably a question she didn't need to ask. Mae wasn't judging, but she also was not going to get a target on herself.
"I think the nearest subway station is actually back behind us. Around this...class project huh? For $8 a can? You didn't get the cheap stuff."
Mae crossed her arms, managing to look like an adult for the moment. Then she burst out laughing. Okay, that was not a good look for her. She quickly let the dead zone expand around both of them so what she asked wouldn't be overheard. "I didn't think kids actually did s*** with spray paint still. Are you tagging something? That's a trip." She pointed to the bubble, and grinned. "Don't worry I won't rat you out. Dead zone means no noise leaves, no noise comes in. Consider it stealth mode. Well, minus the electrical sparks. Those won't work in here. If that freaks you out you can exit," she pushed one hand through the bubble to prove it. "My powers are nothing more than a fun party trick."
Work was busier than normal, and the Monday drag had been real. It had helped a little that Seven had thought it amusing to send Mae texts throughout her day, and not all of them were, well, PG. Mae had to use her powers on a couple occasions to turn off her phone before someone saw what was on the screen. She didn't need to get a lecture for inappropriate work conduct. Although, she had secretly enjoyed the banter.
She had one stop on her way home, a little coffee place near her work. It was a small, one story type place that always seemed obnoxiously crowded. Waiting in line, she looked down at her phone to check the time. She really should let Seven know she would be coming home soon...
"Somethin' on your mind, luv? Maybe I can offer a better distraction?"
Mae looked up, and blinked at the man in front of her. Well, blinked up at him. He was very tall, and very much, on fire? Blue flames danced across his skin, his face, and he had a rather cold expression for someone sporting a smile. As if, this was all a joke to him. Mae felt her brow furrow, and shook her head, putting her phone in her pocket.
"Can't say I need your help. But thanks," she turned her attention forward, and tapped a foot impatiently.
The guy moved so he was back in her line of site, and he returned the glare. "Wut? Not good enough for your taste, kid? Shame. A little distraction could have been fun. Guess I'll have to entertain myself otherwise."
He moved away, and Mae pulled out her phone once more when it buzzed. Seven! She was just opening the text when yelling distracted her. Was that jerk causing more problems?
The text was not what she hoped for. Got groceries! She moved to reply but a call of FIRE! caused her to jump, pushing a button on the phone instead.
Oh, for f***s sake.
The pyromaniac had wandered behind the counter, and was lounging against the counter-top, and the flames were igniting anything within their vicinity. Paper cups, napkins, magazines all went up like so much kindling. Shouldn't there be a sprinkler system? Something to stop the fire!
"Get out of there!" she yelled to the nearest barista, grabbing the younger girl and shoving her toward the exit. There was another hiding behind the counter, and the blue mutant was glaring down at her. Mae snarled, picking up a napkin dispenser and decking the jerk with it. He cursed and fell forward, while Mae grabbed the spare and pushed her after her coworker. How many were left? Were there other customers? It was getting really hot now.
"I thought you didn't want in on the fun, darlin'. Wait, don't run out so soon, you are going to miss the best part."
Mae yelped as a hand grabbed her wrist, but it wasn't burning her. Mae was confused until she realized this maniac could control what he was setting on fire. He was burning the place down on purpose.
"You're...you're crazy," she snarled, and slugged him with her free arm. There were a handful of cuss words and then flames blocked her view again.
"Maybe a bit, but we can discuss it further if you'd like."
Things went predictably steamy in the shower... Which led to the bedroom, and honestly probably undid the whole idea of cleaning up. Seven discovered fairly quickly that when it came to a physical relationship, Mae was much more aggressive of the two. It was almost funny that the shorter of the two wss in charge behind closed doors.
They ended up back in bed, and Mae was sleepily curled back up with Seven. Her Seven. There was a point during the activities, however, that she used the name Jess when Seven didn’t feel right. Whatever the name, she was happy.
Mae kisses a spot on the other’s shoulder, finding it hard to wake back up now. ”I...think this plan was counterproductive...” she commented, pushing messy hair from Seven’s face.
Dating... Mae was a little mesmerized by the sound of that. She blushed, awkwardly flattening her hair feeling almost nervous all of a sudden. ”I really like hearing you say it. It reminds me its real. And, I don’t mind cooking for us. But, it’s really sweet. I like...when you do things. I mean, just making me feel appreciated.”
Had she rambled enough? Mae focused on eating, and then when she was done she collected their dishes. Coming back to the couch, however, she had a somewhat flirtatious look on her face.
”As much as I’m digging the hot mess we both are, how about we take a shower?” she leaned over, and gave one long kiss, and stepped toward the bathroom. ”And yes, I said we.” she hoped that was enough, and collected two towels before hoping Seven would follow.
Seven may have kissed first, but Mae had her own way of doing things too.
