Character
Personality: Mae has a rather laid back personality. She keeps to herself, and when the world gets too loud, she retreats into her own bubble, literally. Her powers give her the chance to talk behind peoples back without them hearing, screaming profanities to herself if she wants to, and the only downside is she can't listen to music in the dead zone, or she might just stay there all the time.
Mae has attracted different mutants because of her power, however, and she had been rather understanding toward them. Sometimes, New York is too loud, and she gets that. Have extra sensitive hearing? She's more than happy to put you inside the dead zone to escape it all.
Hobbies/ Interests: Mae likes to paint, read, anything that doesn't involve technology, really. It's hard to enjoy a good computer game when you forget to keep hold of your powers and short out the power.
Job or part time job and description: Mae works at an upscale spa. She is responsible for maintaining a calm and quiet waiting room, patient confidentiality, and the like. They specialize in hot stone massages, and other tourist attracting practices like chocolate wraps.
Fears/ phobias/ concerns: Mae is afraid of large bodies of water. She has lived in New York her whole life but refuses to go near the ocean.
Special talents: Mae has a pretty singing voice, but only sings inside the dead zone so no one has heard her.
Morality
Good/ bad/ neutral/ other: Mae isn't bad, but she will punch someone out if they mess with her friends. She has a sense of justice, but it aligns with her emotions toward the situation. She will steal something from someone she thinks doesn't deserve it, and will return crime for crime if it comes down to it.
Mutations
Mutation description: Mae has the ability to nullify sound, electronic waves and currents around her body. She creates a field at measured distances from her body (much like a Faraday cage), where electronics act as if powerless, noises are blocked, and she gets to enjoy the comfortable silence inside her bubble.
Strengths Mae's power projects a protective field she can contract to the size of a button or expand up to ten feet (diameter). The field can let in other object or people, but cannot pass through walls or thick, solid barriers. In most ways it behaves like a real bubble, with a few exceptions.
When inside the bubble, technology will not work. No cell phones, no computers. If she was wearing a watch it would become a useless brick until exiting the field. Items can also be 'partially' inside the field if they are thin enough. An example would be a power chord, a thin sheet of metal protecting a computer (or car hood). The limit on this ability is a 2 inch resistance it can cross.
The ‘dead zone’, as she calls it, also functions as a sound proof barricade. You can hear who is inside the bubble, but nothing beyond it’s walls. If you want a private conversation she can condense it around faces to leave phones intact, while making it impossible to hear. She can flatten the dead zone so it focuses on one spot (like someone's mouth), but a portion of it will always be anchored to her body.
Weaknesses and Limitations: The ‘dead zone’ is not invisible. It has a light shimmer like a real soap bubble. You can see people talking and therefore read lips of you want. Electronics exposed to the dead zone will regain function upon exiting, acting like they were powered off or rebooted. The dead zone can be entered by anyone, but Mae can feel objects entering and adjust it as needed.
The dead zone has a default size of three feet around her body. If she is asleep or unconscious it reverts to this distance. She has learned to keep electronics outside the range when she goes to bed or risk never having an alarm clock go off. If something is only partway in the dead zone, it will default to 'off'. A power chord running through the bubble will have it's circuit cut, while things like cell signals would 'bounce' off the resistance, forced to find a different path.
If Mae were to get inside a vehicle it would also be immune to her powers. The enclosed space creates a barricade and lets it function normally. However, if she were to stand directly next to the front of the car, she could cut off power to the battery.
The dead zone can only cross thin distances in one direction if willed. With the example of a car, she can 'push' through the hood, and reach a battery to shut it off. But if she were to try going through the side panel, the interference would stop her. Imagine trying to make a phone call in a brick building. She cannot reach through solid walls, but something thin enough like glass or metal (see 2 inch resistance) is possible. The ten foot diameter is also shorted with resistance in these situations, capping at 5 feet from her in one direction, and bringing the other edge of the field to the default 3 feet.
Physical Abilities
General Physical Capabilities: Mae has had a few fist fights, she can give someone a bloody nose if she wanted to. But she isn't trained in anything particular. She has average strength for a girl her size, but New York street smarts to stay out of trouble.
Fighting Style: Mae will fight if she can win. If she can't, she will run. No use getting the crap beat out of you if you can avoid it.
Fighting Style Pros/Cons: Pros: she doesn't bite off what she can't chew. Cons: Not everyone plays by those rules. That's what 911 is for.
History Of Your Character
Mae grew up in New York, New York, living the dream of a tourist city. At a young age she attended public school, and nothing particularly eventful happened. There were the usual riots, chaos, multi-dimensional invasions. When you were in a city center near so many mutants, you saw some weird crap, but you learned to walk a different route home and avoid what you could.
In the summer when she was 14, she was out on a boat with her dad when a storm hit. A large wave knocked her into the wheel house and knocked her out. Her father, who was trying to call for help, suddenly found no electronics work, and a shimmering bubble of energy had filled the room. With the power cut, the ship was thrown violently.
In an effort to protect Mae, he got her in a life-vest before they capsized. Mae was found alone in the waters, alive, while her father had passed away.
Following the incident, Mae avoided the ocean. She never realized her powers were what caused the boat to crash, or she would have rejected them too. People kept talking about her father, what a good guy he was, how he was missed, how unfortunate it was, and the more she wanted to shut them up, the more she learned to control the dead zone and silence those thoughts.
At 21, she has full control now, and a rather stoic personality. When her mother moved back home, Mae got her own two bedroom place and stayed there. The only downside is how expensive it's getting. She will either need a new job, or a roommate who doesn't mind a deadzone sleeping next door.

Blind dates were a lot less boring when you could mute your date. The best part was when they had no idea they had been muted.
Mae spun the straw of her drink, pretending to look interested as the guy rambled on. He was okay looking, if you enjoyed that fresh out of the office type feel. Clean face, clean glasses, clean clean clean. Not that she didn't mind someone who cared about their appearance, but it didn't seem like this guy did anything fun in his entire life. What had he been talking about anyway? Something about a study involving laundry detergent damaging washing machines? She could never listen to this for more than five minutes, let alone the hour he had been going on for. She finished her drink, feeling the warmth go down her throat. She needed another, but would have to wait a bit so it wasn't obvious she was trying to let the alcohol numb this unpleasant experience.
Wait, he was talking to her. She let the bubble expand and his voice came back. "So you work at a spa? What's that like?"
"Quite," Mae admitted. She ran a hand across her hair and considered it more for a moment. "Everyone is there to just enjoy themselves. You greet people, they go to relax, and you relax. Very non-confrontational."
"That must be so nice. I always have people calling us on the phone to complain. This one time--" annnnnnd enough of you. She wanted to glance at her watch but that would involve some clever maneuvering to get it outside her field. She was already trying her best to protect her phone from the dead zone. With any luck, desert would be here soon, and she would be on a cab out of here.
Did she live nearby, he wanted to know. Not tonight she didn't.
