The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Mae watched as the guy did the most dramatic scan of the dog park...and apparently saw nothing to be suspicious about. People were acting like dogs, dogs were acting like dogs, everyone was being wild and...oh, that person decided they didn't even need pants. That was awkward.
"If their behavior is normal, how about I just boot you from this bubble of safety so you can act just like them. You seem like the type of person who would enjoy being a dog... Heck, maybe some of them will reach you some manners!"
Mae pulled her powers in so exactly one of the guys ears exited the bubble. Enough to get a feeling for the evident brainwashing, while hopefully preventing the full impact. She didn't want to lose the only possible assistance, even if he was virtually hopeless.
The guy did a lot of yelling. For now she would call him Loudmouth, for lack of a name. He got into her personal space which caused Blackjack to raise his hackles, but she had more to worry about than his yelling, and breath. This was a good reminder why she didn’t like people, and stayed in her bubble. Especially when people outside the bubble acted like dogs.
”Okay I’m giving you one chance to look at what’s happening in the park before I kick you out of the bubble. People are going crazy, and you know, maybe I should let you join them! You don’t like dogs, I mean you can always be one.”
Did she have a plan to stop it? Not really. He was sort of interfering with her efforts to do things.
Mae wanted to kick him back out of the sphere, but something stopped her. Maybe she was just irritated enough she wanted to finish scolding him. Maybe she sensed something was weird. Her sixth-sense for danger has been quick lately, given the amount of trouble she and Seven seemed to attract. Blackjack was looking outside the bubble where humans were....acting like dogs. What?
”Hey! Are you doing that too? You better stop! Really, throwing dogs wasn’t enough?!” she complained, pointing as one small teenager ran around with a frisbee in their mouth, their Labrador happily chasing them.
Of course she couldn’t hear the noise causing it inside the bubble, but she could see it. Blackjack stuck his head outside the sphere, then quickly returned, obviously not liking how it sounded. Mae wanted to test it, but stopped herself. Maybe the noisy guy would test it for her.
The guy started miming, and Mae watched as he lured another dog, caught the dog, and threw the dog at her. Mae yelped and managed to catch the surprised pooch, and quickly deposited it back on the ground where it barked in surprise and excitement.
"Stop throwing DOGS!!!!" How could she fight a power like this, when the guy just managed to snatch things out of the air and throw them at her. Living things. Dogs. Mae expanded her powers so the bubble stretched out a good 10 feet on all sides. The dogs caught inside the bubble seemed to realize they couldn't hear things inside of it, and started venturing further away to see where the sound went. Only Blackjack stayed close. She could hear the guy now, but most of the dog barking vanished. If he had electronics, they would be dead. She felt her muscles coiled, ready to move if he tried to throw something at her again.
"What is the point of showing up here just to ruin everyone else's day? Are you seriously just that bored?"
Mae could not pinpoint when exactly she went from pushing the guy into the dirt to just, kneeling in the dirt. There had been some type of ball again, then she found herself much further away. And the guy was making noise once more. Ugh. And throwing things. Throwing dogs, actually, if she was understanding it correctly. Still angry, she jumped back to her feet and moved so she could mute the idiot. She looked around, and Blackjack came bounding back to her.
”I swear, did you come here just to annoy people? Do you even line dogs? What a pain! Why don’t you stuff yourself in a ball next time!” she glared. She had her powers extended so just his mouth was silenced again. He could hear, but not speak. It seemed fitting.
The guy was screaming. Holycow he screamed like a girl. Mae snarled angrily and shoved her powers forward, effectively muting the guy she was beating up. "Damn it stop being so noisy! And stop throwing DOGS!!!" She let go to catch the little terrier, who barked with excitement now that it was free. Mae considered muting some of the dogs as well, but now that the guy was quiet, they seemed confused, and much of their own barking had stopped.
Mae moved her elbow so it was shoved against the stranger's back, pushing him into the grass. Thankfully, this was a dog poo free segment of the park, but she had no promises if he struggled more.
"Let go of my dog, of so help me, I will haunt your life like a poltergeist for the next month," she snapped.
Mae's concern turned into panic when the kid who started the chaos started throwing things, and dogs started disappearing. Blackjack wasn't the first to go, but that didn't stop her from sprinting to the friendly dog's rescue, the first of several dog owners to see the danger signs.
"Don't you dare touch my dog!"
A gold orb hit Blackjack, and he disappeared on contact. Mae was two steps away and turned her panicked attempt at a rescue into a full on tackle, before grabbing a fistful of the guys shirt.
"What do you think you're doing?!!!"
Oh, there were still dogs. A lot of dogs, despite the ones that disappeared. It was hard to be intimidating when dog kisses were quickly intruding on your personal space.
Mae had seen a lot of things during her time in New York. The usual mutant trying to battle a robot, sometimes a brawl or two. But, a dog coming out of a ball? That was, unusual. In fact, it seemed very much cartoonlike in her opinion.
Mae paused, watching as Blackjack ran toward the new dog, then ran toward the new human, her senses of danger on edge. She made sure her powers were close to her neck so she could hear clearly, ready in case Blackjack and this stranger did not get along. Because, when a mutant throws dogs out of random orbs, why would you not be concerned.
Blackjack did the 'great the new best friend' dance with the other canines, and promptly tried to jump at the stranger.
"Blackjack! Down!" she yelled, waving at her dog.
Blackjack was not a good listener. Oh, he could hear just fine, he just didn't listen.
One thing Mae was still getting used to since Blackjack entered her life was the amount of exercise the giant dog needed. One walk didn’t seem to be enough, or sometimes two, and today she had given up and opted to take him to the dog park to run his energy out.
Seven was busy with work, so she was alone, trying to make the most of things. Normally she didn’t mind being outdoors, but today she would rather be home where it wasn’t so dang sunny.
Maybe just another half-hour, and Blackjack would feel tired. The dog bounced around in circles, then bolted toward a new arrival, barking happily. Mae groaned. Nope, maybe another hour. She should have brought a book....
Not knowing what the hell they were doing did seem to be a running motto. True, Mae had been the one to ask if they could date, but she wasn't exactly in familiar territory herself. Now there was even a dog involved. A very large, very energetic dog that was bouncing around the living room, flinging the toy in the air and catching it.
Looking over at the rest of the supplies, Mae considered it. "I have a bit of space in my room, the side table doesn't have anything in it, we could store some of it in there. Or we can get a bin for out here in the living room?" There really was just the bookshelf and tables out here. Heck, they might be able to get a container and stash it under the coffee table.
"The food is the only thing we will want a safe spot for. I have a suspicion any place accessible will be an invitation for him to have a dog food buffet." She collected a water dish to fill up and set it on the floor. Blackjack bounded over and started drinking from it, sloshing water all across the tile. Ah, they would need a towel out here it seemed. Noted.
Seven was affectionate. It was nice. Mae didn't need encouragement to stay for a second and just enjoy the contact. It was strange to think that they had grown close enough for this after what just started as two dysfunctional roommates. Now they were, as the other called them, a 'family'.
She laughed at the 'amateur' jab, leaning over and kissing Seven's cheek. "Not all of us can have your amazing heist abilities. I can learn." Blackjack let his tail thump in agreement, and rolled over onto his back, squashing them more. It took a little bit, but Seven de-tangled from them and went to get ready. and Mae was left behind with her giant pet.
Seven returned with...what looked like the entire pet store. Mae came over and laughed, picking up a squeaky toy and throwing it to the dog, who caught it and pranced around with evident delight at the gift. "Well, at least you didn't forget anything. Hardest part will be getting used to taking him outside. First time he needs out at 3am I feel like we will regret this." She laughed.
Mae was in the middle of a cuddle pile and it was getting warm very quickly. She could not resist the enveloping affection though. Seven speaking behind her made her heart do little spins and flip flops inside her chest. She breathed happily and sighed. "I'm glad you're okay with this. I know it was sort of a last minute thing. But, we have too much stress. Maybe this will help."
Then she sort of looked at the giant dog and realized there were other new problems that had arisen. "I didn't have time to find supplies though. Like, a leash. And a collar. And food. We should probably think of that. Otherwise I suspect he will have his own ideas what he wants to eat." Blackjack was already eyeing Mae's shoes like he felt one of them could be a great chew toy.
Mae pretended to look embarrassed for all of five seconds, then grinned looking awful pleased with herself. "It was a regular jailbreak! Although, disabling a really crappy lock and just walking out the front door isn't so epic. I just, I don't know. They felt like the right one." Mae gave the giant boy a rough scratch behind the ears. His tail thumped happily.
Mae accepted the kiss, now greeted by both her housemates. The apartment was feeling less lonely, and more crowded in a cozy/homelike way. She enjoyed it. She managed to maneuver the dog to a spot next to her by the time Seven returned, and snuggled back up against them. The dog flopped over to join the cuddling like it had been there all along.
Then she thought about the names. "Honestly, I'm kinda digging Blackjack. It was like taking a gamble to get him. And..." She paused, letting a little more of the seriousness settle into the conversation. "After what happened, having a dog seemed like a good idea. He won't be able to hear in the bubble, but dogs can also smell really well, so he would pick up on intruders even without sounds... And, it feels nice knowing someone will watch the house when we're gone so...It's safe. You know?"
Neither of them had said much about the anxiety they had faced. Life had just sort of gone on because it had to.
Mae heard the door open, and watched as Seven entered looking worse for wear. Her initial concern grew when Seven continued on to get showered, cleaned up, and completely ignoring the fact Mae was currently hidden behind a dog heavy enough to make her legs go numb. The bathroom door shut, and both Mae and the mutt looked at each other.
"Maybe it's just a bad time," she commented thoughtfully.
Then, Seven reemerged, butt naked and yes, there were quite a few injuries. Mae looked at the dog, and the dog looked back. "I mean, I'm pretty sure it's a dog. Feels heavier right now. And no name. Right now it's name is just getoffme." The dog gave her a lick across the face that resulted in a good deal of sputtering.
"I, uh, may have...stolen it. From death row. Puppy jail. It's ours now. No take backs. Sorrynotsorry." She peeked over the giant dogs shoulders with look that clearly said 'notsorry' was the stronger statement.
Mae was doing good at acting like everything was okay. She went to work, she came home and cooked, and she generally let life return to ‘’normal’. But under the surface, anxiety had started to form and it wouldn’t let go.
Her brain reminded her of the fight in the apartment, of the feeling of yelling and not being able to get help. She remembered the boat, and the water, the helpless frustration when she wanted to keep her other half safe. In the end, she was aware more than ever there was a risk with her powers. She couldn’t hear the outside world when she slept... and that was bad.
The end result was Mae found her way to the animal shelter, scanning the different dogs they had available. The idea clicked unexpectedly when she was at work, and her coworker has walked up next to her. Her sudden jump made the girl sign and put a hand on Mae’s shoulder.
“Have you considered getting a pet? I heard it helps with anxiety. You haven’t been the same since you broke your arm...” she hadn’t questioned all the details, but seemed to understand it had been less than friendly circumstances.
Mae shook her head, ”I hadn’t thought of that... maybe I’ll stop by the shelter after work. It’s not a bad idea.”
Now, she was staring at dogs. Big dogs. Small dogs. Fluffy dogs that shook fur loose every time they walked. Tall dogs that could knock her over with one jump.
Then, she found one kennel near the back, with a square faced mutt, floppy ears, short fur, a happy tail. They made eye contact, and she knew. He was going home with her.
“You can’t have that one.”
”why?!” Mae was astounded by the comment. The attendee signed unhappily.
“Been here too long. Bring put down today. Paper work already filed. Nothing I can do.”
Nothing they could do.
Mae walked back, standing in front of the kennel and frowning. She scowled, she looked around, and then she reached out her powers for the electronic lock.
Whoops, power outage. She casually unclicked the manual lever and caught the big beauty by the scruff of his neck.
”We’re making a jail break buddy. Come on.”
She kept her powers full strength as they moved toward the side door, taking a long way to an exit. With her powers muting their movements, they managed to slip out the front, then, booked it. The dog seemed to sense what was happening and stayed right by her side, tongue hanging out of his mouth in a delighted expression.
By the time she was back at the apartment she had a moment to really process what she had done. She sank into the couch, and the giant dog climbed into her lap and practically squashed her.
