The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Mae felt lost. She wasn't sure what to do anymore. Seven was taking this hard, and she was struggling with all the emotions it was creating. She tried talking and calming the teleporting mutant, and tried reassuring them that being together was a good thing. But the crying, and the emotional response was hard to process.
Mae got into bed next to Seven and rolled onto her good side. The cast made laying down frustrating, but she kept it to herself. This wasn't a time to be selfish, or be caught up in her own feelings. She kissed Seven against the hair and curled up, deciding she could handle not using the blankets for now.
"Get some sleep. I...I know it's not easy. But, I'm here. We're fine."
She wished her powers did more than silence. She wished they could generate the feeling of peace she knew she wanted them to feel. The feeling this would be okay, that the blood stains would vanish and the bad guys would not return. She wanted to reassure her own heart that it was just another day, just another memory to let go of.
She shut her eyes, but she refused to fall apart. If one of them had to be the strong one for now, it could be her.
The emotions and the stress from the night had been a lot for both of them. Mae held Seven for a moment, before remembering just how horrible this clothing looked, and grimaced. ”You got the rest of the apartment clean, I should at least get myself changed into something not so bloody. As much as I just want to stay here now.”
She ran a hand across Seven’s hair and let them have a moment before standing and returning to their room. With a bit of awkward struggling she managed to get free of her ruined clothing, and changed into a baggy pair of pajamas. Cleaner, sort of, she decided it would just have to work until morning. It would be a nightmare showering for a bit anyway.
”Come lay down now, please? I feel safer when you’re with me.” she insisted.
Mae moved so she was sitting, unable to hug with the dang broken arm. She wasn’t sure if it was Seven shaking or her at this point, they were both a mess. Her desire to be comforted and to comfort collided together. ”It it had been you, there wouldn’t have been a boat, Seven. You....you would be dead. It had nothing to do with fighting ability, but sheer f***ng luck tonight that I got home first. They planned for a teleporter, and didn’t expect you to have someone. But you do.”
The memories of the night haunted her, but not as much as now. She ran a hand through Seven’s hair, breathing in their familiar scent as if to verify they were both still there. ”Do you know what helped me when that asshole was in the apartment? They said your name. He realized it wasn’t you and panicked, and you know, that f***ng pissed me off. I found every knife I bought you and I was able to get Cora’s number on the wall because of you. I was never a fighter on my own, but I have something now I’m making damn sure no one takes away.”
She shut her eyes, remembering the feeling of anger. How it felt to fight not for herself, but for the one she had come to care so much for. Survival was one method of fighting, but this had been another. ”Boats scare me, so much. But all I cared about was having you back with me. It’s like, the world has been spinning my whole life, and I finally have you as a point on the horizon to steady me. I love you, Jess, and I’ll do anything, fight anyone, to keep you.”
She was still covered in dried blood, dirt, and who knows what. Her body was exhausted to a point she could barely function. But none of that had mattered until then.
She heard Seven comment about punching Cora, and sniffled a little laugh in response. She wasn’t sure when she started crying. The silent tears just sort of appeared on their own. ”I hope that means you two are even.” She kissed Seven on top of the head, trying to stop herself from drifting back into panic. But not about a boat, or the broken arm, or the man waiting inside their apartment that took her.
”I can handle all of this, every bruise and cut, any broken bone. But I can’t handle losing you. Please. Your the only thing I need to feel like I can take on the world. Please don’t give up on me.”
Cora stood watch awkwardly while Seven released Mae. They had done what they came to do, and now she had to just make sure they got to land safely. It would probably involve stealing a ship to get back to shore. She took the chance to start that while the cuddly stuff happened. As the X that was more torture than she really wanted to put herself through.
Mae tried to stand when she was released but it turned into a staggered fall, holding onto Seven more than she intended to. "I'm sorry, you're hurt, I..." She felt her legs shake and she shut her eyes. The world was still moving, her brain still trapped with the overwhelming revelations colliding behind her eyelids. Boat, Seven, rescued, pain.
"I just want to be home," she whispered sinking against them. "It's...It's been a long night."
The kid relaxed, which was a good sign. Cora didn't have to drop the bubble or avoid a fist-fight, both of which had been possible based on the initial reaction.
"Hey, giving someone a shock is still something. I mean, Not many people think you're a threat when you just shut their cell phone off. Unless they were on a killer winning streak on Flappy Penguin or something." She decided after a moment. "And I would love anything that meant sleeping less. Heck, I spend far too much time trying to sleep as it is."
Mae accepted the hand, and smiled. "I'm Mae. How about I walk with you at least to the subway in case trouble pops up? I have nothing better to do and I'm sort of enjoying hearing more about this art project you seem to be on."
Mae's powers had always been something that created peace for her. A place of safety, silence; a place where she could escape to. Having an angry mutant stare down at her, foot on her arm, and rage in his eyes created the first sensation of fear she felt toward the sound proof barricade. She started to contract her powers, when barbs from the taser shot into her arm, and she quickly let it back out to stop the electricity.
"Your pick. You can keep your powers up and stop the electricity, or let them down and try to call for help."
Before she could consider which, the foot slammed back down harder on her arm. Something snapped. She remembered screaming. She remembered fighting. And then when the pain was too much she remembered darkness.
------------
The next time she woke, the world was moving beneath her, literally. It had been years, but she still knew that motion.
Boat. Ocean. Boat.
The revelation made her want to hurl, and she leaned against the bindings holding her, trying to stabilize the spinning world. Her arm hit her side, and she tried to cry out in pain, but her mouth was gagged. She tried to pull her powers closer, and electricity jolted her, forcing her to expand the field again.
Same dirty trick. She felt anxiety stopping rational decision making, tugging harder to get free.
"I don't think you want me to knock you back out, sweetie. I hear Seven's on their way to get you, and it's going to be a good show."
The voice moved beside her ear, and she tried to pull away, causing them to laugh. The laughter continued and he grabbed her arm, obviously delighted by her pain. Mae whimpered, trying and struggling to hold onto the information she had been given.
Seven was on their way. She clenched her jaw and slammed her head back, catching the man off guard. He cursed, taking the shot to the nose and returning a cheap shot to her jaw. She couldn't fall, tasting blood, but still determined as ever.
"They're going to have fun f*** killing you," She spat. The man grumbled, and yanked her so she was looking out a window to the sea.
"Let's see them try. They're on the wrong boat, sweetie. And I think their time is about up..."
------------
Cora was checking her shoulder when the comment of 'what next' came up. She looked down at the string on her hand...and cursed.
"Holy f*** they moved her! Quick, look for a radio, electronic something..." There was a distant boom and the boat lurched. She cussed a few more times, and staggered over to the nearest window, looking out and following the direction the string pointed. "There! Jump ship, that's the new plan."
Getting back from vacation had been a reality check for Mae. First, there was work. In the short weekend it felt like all of her paperwork had magically gone missing. Files were missing, customers were confused, and she had her hands full getting things sorted. Then Seven had come home the night before and had been scorched by lasers. Scorched. By. Lasers.
Yeah, sometimes having a less than legal career had interesting side effects.
Opening the door to the apartment, Mae let her powers wash outward into the space, finally releasing the hold she had on them. It felt good to be back. She was so thankful to be in her safe space she almost missed the little thunk as something impacted her jacket. Two little barbs had dug in, a wire leading away.
A…Taser?
F***
Mae dove sideways before the incoming dart could hit her, cussing as she did. The object came from near the bookshelf, so Mae did the logical thing and grabbed the coffee table, flipping it that way. There was a cry and a crash, and someone hit the floor. Invisible? Had to be. She was more grateful than ever her powers had stopped the first attack from working.
“It’s not Seven! Hey! Can you hear me? Get the hell up here!”
Mae heard the name and rage flashed in her vision. She launched herself to where the voice was, pinpointing where the table was lifted and resting on the invisible figure. There was swearing and a struggle as she tried to find a hold on someone she couldn’t see, finally wrapping an arm around their neck. “What do you want with Seven?! Answer me?”
“Nothing we can’t use you as a replacement for,” snarled the stranger, slamming his head back into her face.
Mae fell backward into Seven’s room, seeing spots in her vision. The second the wall crossed between them, she heard a radio come to life. “Are you there? We’re coming up! What’s going on? Answer!”
She needed something to defend herself. She had enough common sense to know her fists were not the best course of attack. Wait, knives! She scrambled to where Seven had put all the extra switchblades she acquired, and quickly pocketed two, opening the last one. When there was movement in the doorway, she dove, slashing out with abandon.
There was a scream, and blood splattered, then the mutant was suddenly visible. Mae didn’t hesitate as she drove the knife into his exposed hand, earning more screams of pain. She gritted her teeth, body checking him into the wall next to the pinned limb. “No one will hear you scream when you’re inside the dead zone, buddy. Now hold still if you know what’s good for you!” she found a sharpie sitting on the end table, and yanked the cap off with her teeth. Without releasing the man, she scrawled a phone number directly onto the wall of the room. Seven would have to figure it out from there. The front door had opened, and although she couldn’t hear them, she could see the figures rushing in.
She dove away from the formerly invisible mutant as a dart landed near his shoulder, and he sank, bloodied and hanging against the wall. Reaching for another knife, she slashed out as someone new entered the room, and then the fight flowed back into the living room. Furniture crashed, books fell, and finally someone got a hit in that sent Mae to the ground. The first attacker was standing over her now, looking down with deep hatred. “What was that about no one hearing me scream?” They snarled.
When Seven came home they would find a destroyed apartment, blood, and one phone number as the only clue.
Mae listened, not wanting to scare Seven out of their story. It took a lot of courage to admit things that bothered them from the past. For Seven, it was their parents. For Mae, there were raw nerves regarding her X. The closer they got, the more they opened up, and Mae held close, trying to be encouraging but not clingy. "Well, I'm glad we could replace those memories with something better. I'm glad you are who you are. I hate the ideas that masculine or feminine have to be such a definition. Yeah, I think you would be incredibly attractive dressed up with me, but I also think you're stunning when you are just wearing a t-shirt and lounging around the house. To me all those things are separate but equally great pieces of who you are."
Mae relaxed, listening to the words, and then the admission came that left her a little breathless. "I love you too, Jess," she responded, pulling the other into a kiss.
Once that started, it would be hard to pull back away. They were alone, after all, and had the weekend to do whatever they wanted, or heck, nothing at all.
Mae sank next to Seven, enjoying the heat of the fire and grinning happily. She always seemed to be the cold one, so it was nice having a heat source so close. She found herself looking around, taking in the trees and the sounds. This was new to her. She didn’t think she would feel so happy to go somewhere just to sleep on the ground.
”Is it weird I never went camping? The most I ever did was go boating with my dad, and... well, the last trip didn’t end so well. It was quiet on the water but not like this. I’m glad I get to be here with you. Sharing adventures together just feels special to me.”
She leaned her head on Seven’s shoulder, listening to the fire crackling. It was ironic to be so comforted by the little fire so soon after someone tried to burn a building around her. ”I have avoided water a lot since then. Just never felt safe. But then this whole fire incident should have made me feel scared too, I would have expected. But, I’m not. Hard to ever worry when I know you have my back.”
Mae found comfort having Seven next to her. She still felt like she was in a parallel universe sometime having the tougher mutant being caring like this. Seven with their don't give a f*** attitude and laid back personality had become someone there for her when she grew anxious. That was more than she could have ever dreamed.
She walked up behind Seven and wrapped her arms around their waist, resting her head against Seven's back. "I'm glad. I was actually really nervous I wouldn't be able to find a place that would work for you. I mean, my powers are okay, but now we can at least use a lamp without having to get bombarded by noise."
After a few moments Mae pulled away and turned to their supplies. "So, tent? And then maybe a fire." She moved to where they had set the tent and started pulling out the posts and tarp. She hadn't been camping, but she had looked at the instructions a few times so she wouldn't look ridiculous trying to do this for the first time once they got here.
Mae nodded when the kiss ended, and turned back, helping gather the supplies. She got a notification from her phone their ride had arrived, and together they got everything packed and were quickly on their way.
The ride was uneventful. Mae tried not to fidget during the trip, but this was probably the longest she had been in a vehicle since, actually, ever. In the end she found Seven's hand and held it, an action that helped her stop fidgeting, if nothing else.
When they finally got to the campsite, Mae breathed with relief. They unloaded, she paid the driver, and then they were alone. The manager had accepted payment online, which made it easier to stay where there could be silence for Seven.
"I think everything's set. Phone's off...How do you feel?" she asked, keeping her power's tethered to let Seven test what they could hear. With any luck...nothing.
It was odd how a few words could make you feel like you were made of air. A romantic statement from Seven made Mae feel like cotton candy: all sweet and sugary and light. She was pretty sure she would melt like cotton candy too. She kissed them, a bit more gently than she often did, but still filled with meaning. "Just once. Let's dress up, have fun...It would be something we've only ever done with each other." Mae didn't feel bad nudging Seven to do something outside their comfort zone when she was going to be dragged right along with them.
Thank goodness, they would wear flats. She laughed and then her breathe caught at the continued kissing. She forgot what she was laughing about. She found herself making a few embarrassing noises at the teasing, desire taking over her brain.
"If you start something, you better finish it," she sighed, offering more of her neck.
Thankfully, Seven was good at listening to cues. It was a late night, but definitely worth it.
The weekend came quickly, and Mae collected what they would need, as promised. She had a lot of the supplies taking over the table in the living room. Tent, check. Air mattress, check. Some food and a pan, bug spray, a lantern. She had to hold back packing the whole house, knowing they needed to be able to get to the camping site. Most of the supplies she wedged into two backpacks. The tend and the bag for the mattress had straps to carry. They would take an oober most of the way, and Mae managed to find a camping site that should be plenty far from other electronics for Seven to actually be able to relax.
She was clipping a small container of hand sanitizer to the outside of the bag when the door opened, and she turned to greet Seven. "I....I think I have everything?" she said, blushing a little. This was not her expertise.
There was nothing in the menu that seemed interesting enough for the moment, so it would just have to be the beverage. It would save a little cash though, so nothing wrong with that. While Mae sipped her drink, however, the relative quiet was interrupted by a couple nearby who seemed to be happy, drunk, and gradually getting louder.
Mae felt her brow furrow, and reflexively released her powers. The shimmer of the dead zone stretched out, blanketing her in the silence.
Better. Much better.
She sighed to herself once she did. There was no one near, so there shouldn't be a problem just relaxing, anyway. The couple could have their time together, the bartender was doing there thing, and she could drink in peace. The only thing she didn't plan for was the booth behind her that managed to fall just inside the circle of her powers. Mae was oblivious to the fact she had now encompassed someone else in her literal bubble.
Mae felt her brain slow for a moment, a sensation of surprise, glee, and nervousness all combining into one. Seven...Seven just agreed to wear a dress. Mae tried not to let excitement show, for fear it would scare the other out of the agreement. "What would I have to dress up in? I don't know the last time I actually dressed up for something. I don't know if I own a dress..."
She looked at Seven, also determined now. "No take backs! We are both going to do this. It'll be nice. Hell, can we wear flats? I don't know if I can even walk in heels, unless you want to see me face plant right outside the apartment door." She grimaced at that idea, and then she was distracted again.
This weekend. They were going camping. She felt the kiss against her neck and melted into it. Her brain forgot to work, and she let out a noise that clearly showed how much she liked what was happening. "You're going to make it hard for either of us to get sleep tonight." she breathed.
Mae felt warm and fuzzy again. Damn. That was making it hard to remember how to think, or breathe, or honestly do anything but just melt into the moment. Where did her brain go? She felt like she was mentally kicking the reboot button. "I guess we both have our self-esteem issues to get through. Maybe it's not a concept of who is better, but just, being the right match?" That was more like it. She held onto the hand like an anchor. She needed that support.
"I wish you could see yourself the way I do. You're, exotic. You look good in whatever you wear. I could wear a suit and I would look awful. But you could dress up in anything from a dress to a t-shirt and you would look hot as hell to me." She was dead serious. Mae loved Seven's fearlessness to just be themselves.
"When do you think we can go? I should have Sunday and Monday off...Can you move any of your jobs around? Or, maybe next week?" Her mind was already spinning with plans. She would have to track down basic camping gear, figure out a ride up there...
