Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Emerald now looked human again. Henrietta smiled at both girls. The blonde sounded mean, but she could tell she was kidding by the giggling afterwards. The brunette laughed too. It was a convincingly good mean-girl voice. Twyla eyed Henri’s skirt and complimented her on it. “Thanks. My mom got it for me. You can totally borrow it sometime if you want. I may have been an only child, but I got the sharing concept down.” She chuckled.
“Yeah, I agree with Twyla. Wolf form kind of trumps all, I think. Besides, you can always play dress-up with my clothes, if you want.” Henrietta gave the wolf-girl a small, friendly smile. Twyla invited Emerald to hang out with them and Henri was in agreement. “That’s a great idea.” Opening the door to her bedroom, she held her arms out, as if to present it. “Please come in, ladies.”
Walking back into her room, she headed straight to her boom-box. Rapunzel picked up a CD and put it in. Waiting for it to wake up a bit, she tapped her foot. After the stereo showed the number of tracks, Henri pushed play. “Everything’s Changing” by Lily Allen started playing. “I love this song. It reminds me of high school. It makes me feel better sometimes.”
Sitting down on the floor, she grinned. “So what do you ladies want to do?” Henrietta pulled out a pile of magazines in case anyone wanted to look at them. Some of them were older, but they still had little quizzes and whatnot in them.
Locke gave Henri a nasty look. She could tell that it was meant to make her drop the subject. Why did it seem like everything she did just made him mad? Narrowing her eyes in frustration, she took a deep breath. Maybe there was no pleasing the kid. She had tried so hard to be nice and make conversation...
>> "I'm going insane because I thought that it would be good to jump a train with no destination in mind, buying a one-way ticket, and now I'm seeing hair wave at me."
Sighing, Henrietta turned around and began to walk to the park. She had figured he was a mutant. The brunette didn’t know why, but she just had. “Yeah, I don’t know if that was a good plan, but you can always get a ticket back. …I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Her hair waving could’ve been from the strong breezes. That’s why she had made it a weak wave. There was no proving she was a mutant by what the teenage boy saw.
Being a pain around people besides her mother was out of character for the 16-year-old girl. Henrietta was getting to the point where trying tp be nice seemed useless. If he was going to act in such an odd way, she would show him to the park and then go back to the Mansion. ___ When she had gotten to the park, she turned to Locke. “Well, this is it.” She wasn’t sure what he’d do here, but he must have a plan. She hoped he had a plan, at least. “Are you sure you don’t want to go somewhere warm or with food?” So much for trying to be difficult…The nice kicked back in. That was a good thing though, Henri didn’t have the heart to be mean or leave someone in trouble.
>> "That's cool, I like fantasy. Read a bunch o' them along the way. Pretty much anythin’ I can lay my hands on…I'm partial to mythology and legends. Surprise, surprise."
Henrietta smiled at the girl. “Most kids like what they grow up with. If your mom really liked mythology, it makes sense that you do too.” To keep her hands busy, the brunette began to braid a small portion of hair on the front, right side. “My mother’s a big fan of romance novels, but I’ve never taken a strong liking to them. I like there to be romance, but also some weird stuff. Keeps things interesting.”
Rapunzel glanced at the clock. Time was sure passing by fast. The saying was true, time flies when you’re having fun. Henri enjoyed talking to Maya and she was sure that Gawain would be interesting to talk to as well. She’d have to talk to them on a guy day sometime. She had finished the braid and set it down. Trying to hide it, she let out a small yawn.
((Thanks! I made the avi and Twyla made the sigi. ))
>>“I didn’t do anything bad. Not really. I just...I just needed to have some breathing room you know? So I hopped a train, and here I am.”
Henrietta knew what it was like to need breathing room, but hopping a train and disappearing...It seemed a little scary. Not to mention it would only anger her mother more if she vanished all of a sudden. That would definitely not help the current situation between the two. The brunette could just imagine the yelling...
>>"I know that."
She let out a small, frusterated sigh. If he knew, why didn't he try to work on it? Henri felt a bit bad for just saying it though. There were better ways to help people besides saying semi-offensive things. "I'm sorry, Locke. I know it can be hard around other teenagers. I didn't exactly have anyone who treated me like a real friend. It can be rough..." Deciding to venture away from topics that could cause pity, she respoded to something else the boy said...
>>"I really have lost my mind."
"Depends...Why do you think that?" She tilted her head and smiled. Locke had lifted up his hair. The girl had noticed that one of his eyes looked different. She realized it must be because he was blind in the one. Was that part of the reason he had been so self-conscious? She hung out with a fish-boy for gosh sake's and this kid was worried about a white eye? "If you were worried about me seeing that, don't be. I don't know what you thought I'd do when I saw your eye..." Henrietta felt a little insulted. She was never the type to judge by appearances and that wasn't a big thing anyway. He automatically assumed she'd be wierded out or something...
Both Juka and Noel agreed to make the effort. Henrietta hoped that this would make the situation less awkward. It also made her feel good. They were doing it for her. Besides, shopping could bring people together, right? She just hoped the two wouldn't fight over a sweater or something. She'd seen people fight over clothes before. It could be very scary. Especially if one had guns and the other was a mutant...
>> "Now, if you two ladies would kindly follow me, I believe I promised to find you some bargains around here."
Henrietta grinned. She was ready to find some clothes. The brunette hadn't taken much with her and she wasn't sure if her mother would ever willingly bring her more of her clothes from Illinois. That may be okay anyway, because Henri wasn't sure if she'd want to see her mom yet. They both needed time to think. At least Rapunzel hoped it would get better in time. There wasn't a way to know that for sure though. Bringing her thoughts back to clothing, she smiled at Juka. "Lead the way, kind sir."
There were lots of different types of things. A lot of it depended on her mood. Most people would probably never be able to guess that she liked Sci-Fi or fantasy stories best. That would partly be due to the fact that she didn't tell anyone, but she trusted Maya. "I like fantasy type of things." Henri felt her face get a little red.
"You didn't tell me what you like to read, Maya..." That's right, point the topic back on her and drift off of my nerdiness.
Even if she hadn't been wondering what was going on with the boy, he just made her more curious. He remained silent and acted strangely around police men. "You just make yourself look really suspicious. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been so wierded out, but you kept looking at the cops like you did something bad. That was the only thing that freaked me out." She stood and looked at Locke a little longer. He wasn't good with social skills and it was a little frusterating for Henrietta. She loved talking to people, but she wasn't getting anything back from the kid. At least he's talked a little bit, she thought.
>>"Sorry. I'm an idiot. I think it runs in my family."
"You aren't an idiot. You're just a little awkward." It was the nicest way to put it. She didn't know him well enough to determine if he was kind of a jerk, or just uncomfortable. Henri wasn't the type of person to say mean things either. She had never really said anything horrible to anyone else except her mother. She had started it though. Her mother had been popping up in her thoughts here and there, and it made the brunette mad. Part of her felt bad for being so rude to her, but the rest of her was hurt by her words and actions. Unfortunately, the part that felt bad was quite small compared to the other part.
Looking across at the park, she realized that there wasn't much for a teenage boy to do there. She would've mentioned the Mansion, but she had no idea if he was a mutant or not. There was a way to test that. If she showed him her ability and he had one, he may not be freaked out. This was how she had done it when she met other mutants. It was strange, but they were almost always mutant. Thinking for a minute, she decided to go ahead with it. A small amount of Henri's hair lifted up. It waved at the boy. Even if he wasn't a mutant and he hated them, she could always walk away. Luckily, no one else noticed her demonstration.
Twyla asked to put her hand up Henri's shirt. The blonde's face turned red and so did Henrietta's. Luckily, she told her how to check herself. Sighing with relief, she gently applied a pressure to the directed areas. It hurt, but not so bad that she could have internal bleeding. Another relieved sigh.
At the mention of the semi, Twyla looked at it. She told Henri to stay where she was. At first, it appeared that the girl with pink streaks in her hair was going to talk to the semi driver. All of a sudden Henrietta couldn't keep track of where she was anymore. She glanced around frantically until she realized that she had probably gone camo. Well, hoping she had gone camo. If all it was was her power, that would be fine, but if she had gotten hurt....The thought made Henri scared.
Sitting on the bench, Henrietta thought about what her next move should be. She didn't like the thought of her best friend just wandering into a mob of people. The brunette wanted to go check if she was okay, but is she was she'd be mad at Henri for leaving the bench. Sighing, this time from frusteration, she stood up. She winced a small bit, but walked as normal as she could. Making it over to the semi, she glanced around. Twyla was nowhere. Turning around, she noticed a small bus. From the outside of the windsheild, she could see the girl.
As Henrietta walked toward the bus, she looked at all the reporters. She hated media. Anything bad for normal people was good for them. As she continued to think about this, she made her way onto the bus. "You just disappeared all of a sudden. I thought you were hurt..or something. I know you can camo, but it still scared me." She also didn't like the idea of being alone out there. "By the way, no internal bleeding. Just bruised." She gave the girl two thumbs up and smiled.
The girl agreed with Rapunzel's decision. Drop the topic. Henri could handle that. She would just have to keep the conversation going about other things. Hmm...Other things...While she was thinking, the other girl got up and began to move.
After Maya had concluded her dance, Henrietta clapped. "That was awesome. Your mom must've been a good dancer." After thinking a moment, she added, "And the street and club dancers." Henri grinned at the girl. "I should give credit where credit is due, right?" After saying it outloud, she realized how ridiculous she must've sound. Deciding to focus on something else, she continued to listen. The girl said she also liked to read!
"Really? Me too. Well, not the mirror thing, but the reading part." The brunette smiled slightly. She assumed that was obvious, but part of her decided to add it all the same.
Continuing her search, she picked pieces of clothing up and set them gently next to the drawer if they weren't the ones she was looking for. Henrietta would hate to have to refold them at a later date, so she wouldn't mess them up. It would save time in rhe future, she thought. The wierd thing was that the rest of her room was a little trashed, but that didn't bother her at all. It was too late to be prevented which meant it wasn't a big deal. She had had a large part in the mess-making, anyway.
When she had found the desired items, she set them on her bed. It was time to change into something a bit more ..random.
Emerging from her room, she wore something comletely different from what she usually would. She didn't own many things like this, since the skirt was picked out by her mother. Henri twirled so the other girls could see it. After the twirl, she broke into a part of an old jazz routine. She laughed.
She could immediately tell she made Maya uncomfortable. "I'm sorry. I was just curious. You both act wierd around each other sometimes. I was wondering if there was a reason." It did make Henrietta curious. What did it mean? Was there something there or was it just awkwardness? Smiling, Rapunzel changed the subject.
"So, what do you like to do in your free time? It sounded like you enjoy dancing too. How long have you been doing it?" Standing up, she did part of a dance from when she was in jazz. She watched her feet and when she was done, she looked up and grinned at the girl. Taking a small bow, Henrietta sat back down. Now she would wait to see if the girl had any moves of her own.
>> I, I didn't... No, not at all. In fact, it... uh, it wasn't hard at all. You know. I'm used to it... I mean, friends, who need 'em? Uh."
Uh-oh. She hurt his ego. Henrietta smiled at him so he would know everything was okay. She knew when to let things go and this seemed like one of those times. He changed the subject to the Mansion. He said he thought he might like it too. That was a good sign. Maybe he'd stay at the Mansion and she'd have another friend who lived there. He made it sound like he didn't want friends. She got the impression that he was trying to make up for his embarrassment. It seemed that all Henri did was make him feel bad.
>> "I was just wondering... have you had lunch or something today? Because if you want, we could -"
The boy began to ask Henrietta to eat with him. At least that's where it seemed like the question was going. It was had become a fill-in the blank because Chris' voice was interrupted by another person's. It said, "Well, well, well. What do we have here?" The brunette turned her head to see a young man standing. More voices joined him and it was obvious that they were traveling in a pack. The boy next to her stepped back, which Henri could understand. They didn't seem like they just wanted to talk. Something about them made Henrietta nervous.
>> "You are a mutant, right, sweet cheeks? Don't see no other reason for a pretty gal like you to hang around such a dang ugly fish mutie, y'see. Don't worry, though; we like mutants. Especially pretty ones."
This just made her even more nervous. Was he talking to her? Automatically, her hair flew up into the air. Strands of it twitched here and these, as if alive. Glancing at Chris, she swallowed. This conversation was starting to remind her of a "Law and Order: SVU" episode. What the man said about Chris made her angry, but she had the sinking feeling that arguing with the men wouldn't be in her best interest. Two of her possible reactions were: fight or flight. It seemed her hair wanted to fight, but right now Henri wished she could sprout wings and soar off into the sky.
Taking a deep breath, she turned to Chris. "Let's just go out the way we came. I'm sure that you don't want any trouble either." But it seemed the group of guys did. The feeling that she was in danger was too strong. It made her feel like vomitting and crying at the same time.Beginning to feel panicky, she grabbed the fish-boy's hand and tugged on it. "Let's go," she whispered.
