The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Luke nodded approvingly. He was...reasonably confident his advice was useful. He didn't really know how girls wanted to look because he wasn't a girl, and he didn't really know what made girls ;good-looking' because...yeah. He was here for moral support, and anything else he did was just a bonus really.
"So where should I stand so I'm not in the way?" Luke glanced around the room. He figured Rivka was going into one of the chairs, probably, but that didn't leave a lot of room for him. He had no idea what getting a piercing required from the artist, so he wasn't sure what kind of space she'd need to keep clear.
Instead he just kinda casually shifted back so there was some distance for the moment. If he could get closer and Rivka needed his hand to hold or something he would, but he figured it was better to start out with some room than to have to move away.

Not really an update of any kind but I just wanted to say for the record that I clarified the description of Luke's claws (they do not extend from the tips but are located roughly where a person's fingernails would be).

When Tempest stepped in front of Luke, his instinct was to shove him aside. The hell was he thinking, taking their side?! Luckily, once Devon started talking, Luke checked himself and thought better of it.
His face flushed with embarrassment-not that anyone could see this--and he crossed his arms, glaring across the field at the heckler. He growled softly again. Luke knew Tempest was right, obviously, but it still made him angry. He really wished he could get into it with these guys-he'd crush them, obviously, no contest-but it would only make things worse. For both of them, and-
Luke heard the popping noise like firecrackers and turned his head to look. "Oh, geez." Little green plants were wiggling around on the ground around the girl by the fountain. As for the girl herself, she was pretty clearly panicking, whimpering and covering her eyes. Luke turned around to move to her, not sure if he could help but wanting to at least try.
Before he could try to approach, he heard the same jackasses laughing in the distance. He turned back, seeing red. "SCREW OFF!" He roared at them, loudly. Loud enough that other people nearby turned to stare before quickly moving on, but on the plus side the three guys finally decided not to push their luck, and made a hasty retreat.
Luke took a couple of deep breaths and stared at the ground, clenching his fists and feeling his claws painfully dig into his palms. It wasn't enough to break the skin, but it helped him calm down a little.
"Sorry." Luke mumbled to nobody in particular. He relaxed after a couple of moments. He had definitely made this situation a lot worse, and if anyone was going to step in for the poor homeless girl, it wasn't going to be him.
"Oh, yeah. Thanks." Luke was a little distracted by the approach of three surly-looking individuals from his left flank. The three men-not much older than him, probably-were talking among themselves and making pointed glances at the girl in the fountain and Tempest. Luke tilted his head to look at them, his ears turning subtly towards the trio.
The fountain was very loud and they were still pretty far away, but he definitely picked up on plenty of words. "...freaks hangin' around" "that mutant cult guy..." "dog-freak" stood out, along with "bum" which was probably directed to the girl, followed by some particularly vile words wished he wasn't hearing.
Turning his head away, Luke's upper lip curled in a snarl. It had been a long time since he'd been the subject of bad-mouthing, and it still felt like a punch in the gut. Unlike many mutants, it was a lot easier for Luke to pick up on stuff jerks like this thought they were keeping from him. He knew what he was supposed to do. They didn't have any ground to stand on, he didn't need to care about their opinions, better to just ignore them. But like...he didn't care. He didn't need these pricks going around ruining his day or anyone else's.
"Hey!" Luke called out to the three guys. They exchanged glances and Luke took a couple of steps towards them. "You wanna say something, say it to my face!" The more he thought about it, the more he seethed. Two of them seemed to get the hint and started backing up, one nudging the third in the side as he retreated.
That third guy, however, stood his ground. He spread his arms wide, a clearly mocking notion to match his smug expression. "Hey, freedom of speech. You gonna bite me for havin' an opinion?"
Luke paused, only briefly. A low growl issued from his throat as he started moving at him. His opponent didn't flinch. He sauntered forward, confident that whoever won the imminent fight, the mutant was going to get screwed over for picking a fight with an ordinary, law-abiding citizen. Not that Luke was considering the legal consequences. He was just angry, and that was an extra-bad state for him.

...T-teddy 'doll'? That was a new one, to put it mildly. Luke gave her a look, but didn't say anything. Later, though, they'd need to talk about that particular nickname. He smiled, just a bit embarrassed.
All that aside, Luke was glad to actually try to help out if it meant not being so useless. He took a look at the blue stone, then glanced over at Rivka. Then he returned his gaze to the stone. He actually thought that it was a good color for her, as far as his middling-at-best judgment could determine. And she clearly liked it.
Luke nodded. "Yeah, I think it'll look great on you." It took a sec, but then he noticed the price. Yeesh. He didn't know how Rivka could toss that much down just for an accessory, but if she'd saved up for this, it couldn't be that much of a stretch for her, probably. She wasn't asking for Luke's financial appraisal.

Luke nodded, glad that Tempest didn't call him on the myriad faux pas he'd just made. "I like it, yeah. Air's nicer, too." He rubbed the back of his head. "It's good to get out while it's warmer than it's been this winter." Tempest definitely had a way of being a comfortable presence. That was good, really. Mutants did need advocates, and better someone like him than someone like Luke who was...less eloquent.
There were plenty of sounds around in the park; leaves rustling, the occasional bird call or people talking. It wasn't until Tempest's gaze drew him to look at the fountain nearby that he realized the splashing wasn't just the usual fountain sounds. "Huh."
Luke was of course familiar with homeless people in New York City. There were a lot of them. Luke felt bad when he ran across them, tried to give them some pocket money if he had any. He always wanted to do more, of course, but he struggled to make time for that kind of volunteer assistance with school, training, and such.
She looked really young, too. That sucked to see. Weren't there supposed to be like, places for that? Luke had never been to one, so he didn't know how that was, but were they really all like the evil orphanages in TV and books and stuff? Distracted by his musings, it took Luke a second to notice that Tempest was heading over to her. He quickly followed after, not really sure what they were doing but hoping he could at least help somehow.
Stopping a ways back from the girl, behind Tempest, Luke tried not to look threatening, which was a bit of a struggle. He waved briefly when Tempest introduced him, but letting his gaze wander after that. He wasn't the greatest at talking, and he knew that, so he could at least like, keep an eye out for trouble. If anyone tried to get involved, they'd have to pass the scumbag-sleaze test first, administered by Luke of course.

Luke heard a voice behind him, and he recognized it. of all the people in the entire city of New York, the tattoo artist he'd met with Rivka was here. "What are you-ugh, nevermind!" Luke spoke with his eyes still glued to the creature. Whatever she was doing, he was pretty sure she wasn't on the level of fighting this mutant. Said mutant definitely didn't look like they'd be willing-or possibly even able-to talk. And had probably just actually killed someone. Luke could smell the fresh kill, and it made him sick.
He shoved his phone into his pocket. Luke could tell that the mutant was hostile, obviously. Faced with a predatory, canine-like mutant, he could feel his own instincts in the back of his mind. Gritting his teeth, breathing heavy, Luke glared back at his opponent, trying to introspect his own responses, figuring out what the other mutant was thinking. He felt...defensive? Somewhat protective, not of Rayne-right, that was her name-but of something. His own fur was sticking out, making him look feral, or at least in need of a good brushing.
Territory? His turf. "Rrrrrr." Luke unconsciously let a low growl issue. That seemed right, yeah. Obviously, he didn't own this park, nor did the other mutant, but logic didn't really factor into it, for either of them. Shoulders arched, Luke raised his arms, hands out at his sides, as though he was planning to give the hound mutant a hug. He was definitely not planning that. Truth be told, he wasn't sure what his plan was now; 'fight' felt right, but he was in control, and he didn't know what this would do other than probably get one or both of them hurt.
But at this point, his mind was struggling to focus. Turns out, relying on your own personal predator instincts made it harder not to think like that. "Hey!" Luke barked-almost literally-and quickly pulled his phone out again before throwing it behind him over his shoulder, roughly where he though the tattoo artist was. "Run, call uh..." Names weren't coming to him. it was hard to focus on anything but the threat in front of him.
"Uh, someone. X-Men." That was about the best instructions he could manage right now. Now, the best he could do was attempt a takedown, then...do something else. For now..."Arrr!" Luke snarled viciously, bounding forward on all fours and lunging at his opponent with his outstretched claws, aiming to slash the hound across the face with a downward rake.

Luke was in a very good mood today.
It was Sunday, which was a good start, because Luke had been busy with starting up classes after winter break. He could use the time off, is all. He'd also gone to service for the first time in a long time, and that felt good. It was an important thing to him, and it felt bad that he wasn't always able to get to it. Bad excuse, but he was busy a lot, school, training, the odd mission...So it was nice to reaffirm himself with that.
What he was really happy about, though, was the weather. Luke was very particular about it; too humid made his fur matted, too hot and he overheated, too dry and he started shedding more. Right now, it was really nice, though. Cool, comfortable, not too arid, the exact kind of weather he appreciated. It was so nice that Luke had finished service, bought some breakfast, and decided to walk around a bit.
While he was enjoying the weather, Luke figured he'd maximize the good vibes this morning and head to Central Park. With the weather as it was, the Park smelled really nice, the plants finally starting to grow back, and he really appreciated that. He was adjusting to the smell of the city, but sometimes he was hard-pressed to want to be outdoors.
Scarfing down the last of his breakfast sandwich, Luke rolled his neck and looked around. He didn't have anywhere to go now. Well, nowhere he needed to go. He could just walk around all day if he wanted, but he didn't really feel like being that unproductive today. Eventually, he'd want to get something...done...
Was that Devon Hadden over there? Luke did a brief double-take. He knew of the man-heck, he'd helped with the Haven initiative for the California fires for a bit. He knew there was no reason for the founder of Haven to be out like, being a person. It was just weird seeing him just jogging around.
...Should he go talk to him? That might be awkward. Very awkward, actually. Devon wasn't that much older than Luke, but that definitely didn't mean they were alike. The guy was a big deal, and Luke was not.
Unfortunately, while thinking on this, Luke had continued walking, and had thoughtlessly approached the man anyway. "Oh!" Luke looked over at the man in surprise, now only a few feet away. Well...shoot. "It's been a while, Mr. Hadden." He smiled. Was he 'Mr Hadden?' Uh-oh. "Enjoying the uh, weather then?"
Right. Weather manipulator. Oh, he might have to go back to church after this. This wasn't exactly a sin (probably), but it wouldn't hurt to pray for forgiveness, right?
Luke's plan...kind of worked. He'd figured Shin would go for the baddie, but turns out not telling people your plan makes it hard to follow them!
On the plus side, Shin was much better at distracting the killer robot than Luke had been. He was blowing many little holes in the thing, and from the looks of it was wearing it down. Eventually, the holes stopped being repaired by new sheets flying in from the guy's bag. Plus, with all the sounds of fighting, the guy didn't seem to have heard Shin calling out. But Luke heard him!
After observing this for a few seconds, Luke readied himself. The guy looked entirely focused on commanding his mecha thing, and there was no more paper coming in to reinforce the robot. That left him wide open. His feigned injuries vanishing instantly, Luke snarled, "C'mere!" Not that loudly, but he was ready for some catharsis by now.
Lunging forward on all fours, Luke stopped right next to the paper-mancer, who turned and gasped only briefly before being grabbed around the torso and. With a growl, Luke lifted the flailing man over his head, then past him, before slamming the loser on the ground behind him. A textbook vertical suplex. He probably shouldn't be taking too many tips from Travis Touchdown, but dang, it felt good.
The guy was out cold, and his big paper mech deflated, scattering shredded loose-leaf and construction paper across the street like a flood. Luke sat up and turned to look at Shin, who at least seemed to have enjoyed himself. "We good? I think we're good." He stood up and put his hand in his pocket for his phone.
Well, he tried. Ow. Luke laid down on his back again. Ribs. Ow. "Uh, good-ish. Yeah. I'll be fine, just...yeah."

Luke nodded. He could do that. He just didn't want to get in the way while she was like, poking holes in his friend.
He was a little distracted looking around at the room, but more just 'cause of the smell of...stuff. Cleaning supplies, probably. Not a great thing. He noticed Rivka looking over at him and started. "Oh, sorry." He walked over and stood next to Rivka, folding his arms and trying to look less awkward.
Luke did want to help, as best he could. He took a look at the gem Rivka was holding. Or was it a crystal? Well, it was, but he didn't know if it was a gem too or what that-focus!
"Hm...yeah, those look nice." Luke was not an expert on fashion, but he did know that girls typically didn't like being told they looked bad. It'd basically be a wild guess if anything he said was good, so might as well just go for path of least resistance.

Luke waved sheepishly. "Yeah, I'm just here for moral support." He turned to Rivka.
"You'll be fine. They don't let just anyone use those things." He grinned. There was a nonzero chance that he was going to make things worse, but it was pretty close to zero, hopefully!
"So..." He looked around the room. "I'll try not to get in the way. Anywhere I can just stand?"

Luke was fine being moral support. It was good, even. If a friend of his needed someone to back them up, of course he wanted to help. Also, he definitely wanted to make sure Rivka didn't cause a disaster somehow. She was so sweet but you'd think her mutant power was making things screwy. She was plucky though, he'd give her that!
She'd apparently done the research, picked out a good place, and seemed pretty excited, so Luke was feeling like this might go well. 'Might' because you never know what's going to happen.
The woman seemed to be drawing, so Luke didn't feel like rushing the person who would be poking holes in his friend. Honestly, he figured there wasn't much he'd do besides play on his phone. He couldn't get a tattoo obviously, or a piercing-the hole would close up too quickly. That was fine, anyway. He didn't see the appeal.
Instead Luke just kinda...stood off to the side after giving Rivka a thumbs-up of encouragement.

"Ahh, you'll pick it up. Takes practice, is all." Luke nodded reassuringly. He could go into the issues he'd had getting used to his mutations, but that wasn't really fair. He didn't want to make her feel like it was easy. If anything, figuring out how to 'use' a power like her's and not just 'have' one like him seemed pretty hard!
"Yeah, I can try." Luke agreed to help and immediately regretted it. He rubbed the back of his head awkwardly.
"Uh, well that's...not a name." Ugh, why this. "In this case, 'dick' is uh, 'penis'. And a wad is, well..."
Okay, maybe the awkward accidental-maybe-hitting-on thing wasn't so bad. This was definitely worse.

Luke did not 'speak dog'.
Some people seemed to assume this and it was definitely not true. He wasn't a biologist but he was pretty sure animals didn't just have language. Maybe? Not to him, though. All he knew was that animals were cute, and some liked him, but most hated him. Presumably because he smelled like either a predator or a rival.
All that aside, he didn't need to speak dog to know that the blood-curdling howl was...not good! At best it was a mutant who was out-of-control, maybe using their powers for the first time. If that was the case, they definitely needed someone there. Not to mention, it could be someone going after someone else. Or both. Probably both, unfortunately.
As soon as he picked up the sound in the distance, piercingly high over the normal city bustle, Luke was moving towards it. It was pretty early in the evening, so there were plenty of people around, which was bad for quickly getting from Point A to Point B on foot. Still, he managed, shouting apologies back whenever he pushed past someone.
It only took a few minutes before he'd made it into the park. He didn't see anything, or hear anything this time either. His eyes were good but not superhuman or with night-vision. So he tried again, closing his eyes to focus his hearing and smell, sniffing the air and turning in place.
After only a couple of seconds, he got...something. Very faint, pretty far away, still. He quickly started moving towards the source, gradually trying to figure out what the smell was. It was not good, definitely, and by the time he'd arrived near the other edge of the park, Luke was very sure that there was blood. A lot of it.
Luke recoiled and cursed under his breath when he saw the slaughtered corpse splayed near a tree. He started moving to the person, it was clear well before he approached that they were very dead. And...eaten? Oh, dear Lord. Luke grimaced and stepped back, fishing his phone out of his pocket. The smell of blood and guts and...stuff was overwhelming, but he could definitely pick up something else. Bestial but not completely inhuman, almost familiar...
Yeah, smelled like a person-animal...something. Familiar because that was how he smelled to himself. Luke was out of his depth alone. He probably shouldn't have come here without backup, but he hadn't wanted to delay. Not that it made much difference now.
Luke grumbled and swore quietly again. He was having trouble getting through the contacts on his phone because his stupid fingers were shaking. Okay, yeah, dead person, it sucked, but he was trained for this. Panicking was not going to get whoever did this stopped.
Just as he was about to get the number for back home in, he heard something else. Luke turned to look, and saw...a thing. A big, huge, monster-dog thing covered in blood. From his angle of approach Luke completely hadn't seen it, and the smell of gore had covered how strong and present the scent was.
Hastily, Luke tried to hit the speed-dial, but missed and closed the menu. Then, because today was 'suck at everything' day, he cursed very loudly.

She seemed to handle it okay. Luke was pretty sure she got the jist of what he meant with his admittedly-bumbling explanation. Leaning back in his chair, Luke was glad that the awkward part was over and now they could talk without-
Wait.
Well this was just a very unfortunate time for all involved, including the rat who at least had the sense to escape first. Luke tried not to react, again, but he definitely rocked forward in his chair in surprise. There was a lot to take in with just this one person. For one, Gawain/Maya was a nice...person, and Luke had to admit he was a handsome guy. He was also only a guy half the time, though. Unless Rivka was into both of him.
Well if she was bi, Luke couldn't really say anything. But he was also like a decade older than either of them. That was, well, not...good? Maybe it was less weird where she was from, but he wasn't sure, and definitely didn't want to assume. That said...it was probably not okay over here. Age gap aside, Luke didn't think teacher/student was generally accepted anywhere.
"Yeah, no, I getcha." Luke would feel really guilty if he'd made her feel bad, though. "I mean, I can see what you'd see in him. Her, y'know." Luke could...see the appeal in older guys, but this was not the same and also not the point. He also definitely didn't want to out himself to her right here and now. Maybe eventually, he supposed, but not now. "I see why you were not sure about sharing it, though. People might, you know, not think it's great."
Ugh, he was really screwing this up. Maybe if he just walked away this would magically fix itself. "Don't worry about me, though, I won't tell." Now ideally, Luke wanted to gently deflate the tension so that they could move onto a less minefield-like topic. "Maybe you can do missions with him? Are you planning on doing field stuff?"
Seemed fair, harmless, didn't push anything on her too much. That was the best Luke could come up with, but it wasn't too bad, right?
