The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Lots of people were probably sad to see summer go. Back in Maine at least, Luke had been one of those people. Nowadays, the cooler days were a welcome arrival for him; being covered in fur made hot days an ordeal, and not being able to sweat seemed nice until you realized that humans did it for a reason. Instead, Luke had developed canine methods of cooling himself, but having his tongue out wasn't as cute as it was for actual dogs. People stared.
So while summer seemed far too short for some, but for him, every day was waaaay too long. Right now the weather was much more tolerable, so he was actually able to exist comfortably. Oh, and the shedding had stopped, which was another fun part of being a wolfman in hot weather. He'd given up on lint rollers after like 3 days.
Class and the (relatively few) students who left for summer were back in, and Luke was happy to see some familiar and new faces. Familiar, for example, like Skye, who had a special place in his friend circle for their first two interactions being horrible disasters. She'd been a tiny pixie at the King Con the first time, and after an ill-timed prank shortly after her arrival she'd used her flashbang on him. It was an accident but he was not excited to see (or hear) it again. She was pretty chill and they were into games and other nerdy stuff which was nice.
As for new people, a newcomer to the school was also new to the US, hailing from Israel apparently. Rivka was also quiet, but she had a cheekier side, and he was enjoying her company, especially her enthusiasm for American stuff. Her English was a little choppy, but it wasn't like Luke could speak a lick of Hebrew, so who was he to judge?
Therefore, it was a good day when it was early evening, right after dinner, playing Gachamon on a handheld battling Skye and hanging out with Rivka. Right now they were breaking from doing PvP while he was trying to advance in his permadeath run.
"Aaaaaah, why." Luke groaned melodramatically as red 'critical hit!' text flashed on the screen. He leaned back in the reclining chair, giving the ceiling a look of exasperation, ears drooping in simultaneous disappointment. "Hey, guess who wiped to Whitten, it was me." Whitten was the most infamous boss in this game, and Luke had thought he was in good shape to go at her. Apparently, nope.
He snapped the double screen handheld shut and sat up. The permadeath was self-imposed, but once he'd lost that, it really took away the motivation. Also this was like the second consecutive time he'd lost at this point, or fourth if you counted the runs where he beat her but lost too many good 'Mons and wiped later. "Meh, I'm burned out." Luke looked over at Skye, then turned to Rivka. Figuring she had no idea what was going on, he asked, "What've you been up to?" He didn't want to leave her out by going into weird game jargon, plus he figured giving her more chances to converse would help her learn faster.

The shiny human wasn't scared-looking, not at all. The werewolf's inclination was to fight, assert his power over softer things, even when they had hard outside bits to protect them. The problem was, it was early, and while he was eager to flex his muscles and test his claws, there was time to go before dawn, and he didn't want to tire himself out too early.
But, given the shiny person was waving around his shiny stick like that, he probably wasn't too good with it. He was probably easy prey, a warmup really, before a more satisfying hunt came along. Grinning savagely, the werewolf drew towards the human, curling and uncurling his claws.
The sound of nearby movement, though, reached his ear and caught his attention for a moment. A female, covered in frilly pink cloth of some kind, had moved near the entrance of the maze to his left. If the shiny one wasn't worth the effort, the frilly pink one would be a more fun chase as she screamed...
"Rah!" The werewolf barked loudly at the girl and lunged forward with his claws out, but didn't move from his spot. Instead, as soon as he did, banking on her reaction to startle the shiny one, he leapt forward with fangs bared and claws outstretched, taking two strides on all fours before rearing up to slash at the shiny one's fake shiny face.

I think she could be pretty good friends with Luke! They're the same age and have similar dispositions as well as nerdier hobbies, and Luke for his part is pretty tolerant about stuff even if he's not familiar with things that are a part of her life. For example, he's Christian but won't take issue with her being Jewish even if he doesn't understand parts. They also both have some sexuality-related-religious-angst so that's a fun bonus.
It might be cool to have him introduce himself to her, depending on how she'd react at first glance vs. if she gets to know him :3
If Luke had been capable of the requisite thinking, he'd be absolutely mortified at this turn of events. In a cruel irony, his worst fear had a tendency to be realized without him even noticing.
As it was, his conscious mind was broken down almost instantly at the flash of light, and as it faded he jumped down from the stone-painted wooden block, rearing back and howling skyward. A warning to any who intruded on his hunt, and a challenge to his would-be prey. The hunt was on.
To an observer unfamiliar with him, Luke wasn't that different-looking, though whose blood was now smeared on his face was probably best left unanswered. However, he'd certainly changed; already a well-build young man, his shoulders were now even broader, his body stooped over, favoring quadrupedal movement far more than usual. His eyes glowed dimly red, with no visible pupil, and his fur was scraggly and matted, distinct from his usual self-conscious cleanliness.
Of course, looking at the poor boy's expression as he tore snarling through the maze made it all too clear he wasn't in his right mind. Lips curled back, spittle dripping from his exposed fangs, brow contorted in rage, he was the picture of a monster movie poster.
Internally, he wasn't much more recognizable. Though his senses remained keenly aware of his environment, his pauses to look around or sniff the air were only briefly considered, then forgotten as soon as he determined the direction of the nearest-smelling prey. The only thing on his mind for more than a moment was hunger; partly physical desire to feed, but also a more visceral, aptly-primal need to chase something down. Honestly he wasn't even thinking of anything after that, even if he'd kill or eat his capture if given a chance.
As soon as the werewolf came tearing out of the entrance to the maze, he spied quarry; a man he might otherwise have fondly recognized as his teacher. They were shiny and had a beast's face, but he could smell their humanity. Still, feral as he was, he wasn't stupid, so he rose up on his back legs and bared his teeth threateningly. If he got an opening, he'd strike, but he'd prefer to find a softer target without all that metallic covering.
He edged slowly to the right, readying to run or fight without being cornered back into the hedges.

"Oh, okay then." Luke opened the door, double-checking his pockets that he had his phone and wallet on him, then stepped out and accepted the badge. He was wearing a loose red t-shirt and jeans, so he was about as incognito as he got. It wasn't exactly easy for him to blend in though. Hopefully if he was being singled out it wouldn't require being completely inconspicuous. That would be some bad decision-making.
He did appreciate Shin's shirt reference, though. That made him smile. He pinned the badge onto his shirt, center-left of his sternum. Pausing for a moment to admire the insignia, Luke scuffed his left shoe on the ground. "So what's the situation?"
Hopefully no fighting was a good sign? He wasn't sure what else he might get pulled into though. His mutation wasn't so great at non-physical stuff. Search-and-rescue maybe? That he could do.

Technically Luke was present, but he wasn't all 'there' so to speak; he had only been awake for about 20 minutes and had just flopped down on his desk, squinting at the still-strong sunlight making it hard to read his emails. Shin was lucky, if anything; Luke would have slept in a lot more if he could have, but he'd been kind of restless and unable to lay still so he'd gotten up, still a bit tired.
Though he heard the teacher's approach down the hall, he was surprised that he'd knocked on Luke's door. "One sec." Luke stood and opened the door, a little confused by the sudden offer. It wasn't that it made no sense; he'd definitely mentioned once or twice that he was hoping to do more hands-on mission training. He wanted to do his part, and the sooner he was ready the better. He didn't like the idea of people around him rushing into a dangerous situation and him waiting for them to maybe not come back. That sounded awful.
He hadn't mentioned it to any faculty though. Either someone had brought it up--he had no idea who--or mind-reading of him or someone he'd talked to was involved. Luke...definitely preferred the former, and he was pretty sure the staff weren't gonna do that kind of thing just for the heck of it. And course it could just be completely unrelated and he got pulled out of a hat. It wasn't worth worrying about.
Opening the door brought Luke face to face--well, metaphorically, he had a whole foot on Shin--with the math teacher. To be fair he was also on the team, to some extent, and from what Luke had seen of his powers, he had some really cool stuff going for him. He was also kind of a dork, but in a good way, and Luke was also kind of a dork, so he enjoyed the off reference in class that other people didn't catch. It helped Luke was decent at math himself.
"Okay, I'm..." He'd at least gotten dressed in like, actual clothes, but being ready to like, get breakfast was not quite the same as being ready for combat. Then again, if it was at all important he didn't want to try to hold them up. "Yeah, let me get my uniform. Where to?"
As he finished his last sentence, he started letting the door close slightly, stepping back so he could go grab his gear once Shin had answered.
Meanwhile, deeper into the maze, in a slightly more open area full of few statues Luke was having the time of his life. The only hard part was sitting still.
Haven had been doing a lot more stuff with the X-Men of late, and since the wildfire control Luke had been happy to help out. From what he could tell they were decent folks and this kind of thing was just nice to have in general. It didn't need some ham-fisted moral to be fun, and if people could have fun with people who were mutants, that just made it easier to get along.
Then again he was just having fun jumping out at people.
There were four little 'bulges' in this part of the path, each with three statues; the second and third (he was in the former) had real people, though. Luke was in the second, and there were two girls and a boy in the third. They were tasked with doing exactly what you'd expect people on pedestals pretending to be statues on Halloween did; jump at folks.
Admittedly, he was probably in the minority of people with visible mutations who weren't too self-conscious about it. People staring made him uncomfortable, sure, but for the most part he was pretty okay with being the werewolf dude and knowing it. It made events like this a great opportunity as well; he didn't need a bulky outfit or cheesy mask or anything. He had fake blood splattered on his shoulder and face fur and the bottom half of a too-small thrift store shirt torn off, baring his midriff. The blood was going to be a nightmare to scrub out, but that was a fine price to pay for this.
He'd gotten into a decent rhythm with this; sometimes, the first person walking through would get a lunge and a growl, other times he'd go at the person at the back. He could make very convincing wolf sounds--howling, growling, snarls, and so on--which was a logical but convenient skill. Every so often he let people pass, then when they got to the three ahead he'd sneak up behind them and loom menacingly. The trio were really great about doing that; they were wearing face paints and looked like huge, creepy dolls, and somehow their eyes were just not right. When the 'victims' recoiled from their cackling, the three would 'notice' him and cower. When the group turned around, they saw him and he'd snarl and they'd always flip out.
It was fantastic. The only problem was when there was a lull, the anticipation of trying to stay still on his haunches made him antsy. And the time someone punched him in the face. Luke probably gotten a little too close to let them do that, and the organizers had made it clear that it was a risk sometimes. It was fine though; he was super-tough, so he made a little show of flinching and then baring his teeth at the guy, who ran screaming back to his group. He grinned and gave them a thumbs-up. They liked that.
All in all, this was a great way to spend his night. At the moment, he was returning to his pedestal from sneaking up on the previous group, when the sound of startled gasping caught his attention. Another group, a pair of men and a woman, had come down the path and seen him on all fours right in front of the short platform. There was a brief pause, before Luke hopped back up, sad down, and stood still, eyes closed.
He listened as their nervous laughter died down and, as soon as he heard them try to shuffle past him, he opened his eyes and feigned a lunge at the woman in the back. Her scream was piercing, and kind of painful, but as the three ran screaming and laughing forward, he laughed anyway.
Minor incidents aside, things were going well. The night was still young, and Luke was looking forward to a great one.

The call had come in not a moment too soon, it seemed, since by the time Luke had gotten to the entrance a group of people arrived. If he had to guess, they looked related so it was probably a family thing, though his usual scent ability was so overwhelmed with smoke he couldn't really know.
The half-dozen group, four women and two men, were dusted with ash and mud. Two of the women were obviously hurt; one had bloody gashes across her body, and was barely supporting herself, leaning heavily on one man. The other was limping and had a stab-like wound in her thigh, but wasn't as worse for wear.
Several of the other base camp staff rushed in, getting to the uninjured folks to account for them. Luke moved quickly to the pair of injured women. The man holding up his wife(?) was almost as tall as Luke and much wider, dwarfing the tiny, middle-aged woman he held. As Luke approached, the man finished giving his name to the responder, then regarded Luke with a suspicious gaze. "Medical is this way, do you need help getting over there?"
"I got her, it's alright." His tone and words weren't hostile, but his expression was. Luke couldn't really blame him, in fairness; sure, it sucked getting that look, but in these circumstances it was probably hard to give someone into a stranger's care at all. And at least the man didn't seem to have trouble keeping her up, and she didn't look so seriously hurt that it was a code-red crisis or anything.
The other woman, who was short-haired and athletic in build, nodded wearily at him. "I'd be glad to." She exchanged a glance with one of the men, who looked to Luke and nodded. "Okay, let me-" Before he could say more, the woman half-jumped and half-fell onto him, hugging him like a sloth. She wasn't heavy, so even by surprise he had little trouble staying upright.
"Oh, okay. That's fine. Let's go." Luke was caught a little off-guard by the sudden intimacy, and he suppressed the instinct to drop her at the sudden discomfort. She laughed quietly, and since her grip across his shoulders was pretty tight, he just lightly held her from behind, careful not to put his claws near the tears in her shirt.
They were definitely a bit of a strange sight, but at the very least he could hustle to the medics without too much issue. Carefully setting her onto one of the cots and helping adjust her leg into a supported spot, Luke exchanged a weak smile with the woman, who was chuckling quietly. She was clearly coming down from an adrenaline rush, but seemed lucid enough, so he left her feeling pretty confident in her well-being.
The other man arrived with his wife(?) moments later, though he seemed far less stable once she was off him. "Well done." Luke said to him at the opening of the tent. The man looked a little surprised and confused, but nodded weakly in response.
Just as he stepped out of the tent, Ranger's voice came clearly into his ear. "Okay, that last group's safe and sound. Keep me posted." He replied. He was feeling better now; nerves were dwindling as he found his confidence a bit more. So far so good!

"Agh." Luke flung the blob of ex-paper onto the grass, shaking water off his hand. He wrinkled his brow, water dripping onto his forehead, and shook his head to keep droplets out of his ears.
"Okay, so..." Luke looked around at the remainder of the raid party. "Where to next?"
Luke wasn't really sure there was much else to get, but he might as well give Glitch final say-"Wait." He paused. There was a distant thump...then another...a louder one..."Someone's coming." Luke hissed, trying to determine the direction of the sound.
...Coming down the main hallway, towards the front door..."Someone heard the sprinklers I think. Let's go." The sound of one of the doors began to click, loud enough that even people without Luke's hearing could probably pick it up.
After a moment to make sure everyone else was clear on moving out, Luke booked it, dropping to all fours for speed and to make himself less visible.

Hmm, maybe he'd overreacted. He got the sense Chase's feelings were hurt.
"Sorry, no, it's fine." Luke laughed awkwardly. "I just, that kind of thing is weird, y'know?" He shrugged his shoulders awkwardly, his spiked features relaxing into a normal position.
"I didn't mean to like, say you're messing with me." Luke shook himself a little; it was kind of damp and the trees above had been dripping rain onto his shoulders over time. "If you wanna like, be me for a little more, that's fine."
He smirked. "I'll take it as a compliment, really."
Luke will definitely attend, with some kind of costume (though does he really need one? :P) and will definitely be involved in dealing with Christanna, which will be the second time he's been present for costumes-gone real. I'm sure he'll be delighted!

Okay. This was fine, Luke was fine letting the adults do the talking. That was like ninety percent of his role anyway, right? Ranger's demeanor certainly helped him stay focus, seeing as he clearly knew what to do. Like it was routine, really, and it kind of was, right? California wasn't exactly new to the wildfire situation.
Luke followed Ranger's path, keeping an eye on as much around him as he could. It was slightly cooler out of the direct sun at least, and the smell of the inferno was blocked out a bit too. Luke slipped the earpiece onto his head; he'd used the sort of thing before since it was an adjustment most people didn't have. It had a larger pad that fit over his ear, kind of like a rubber band though not too tight. The bud itself was large and round, and didn't need to be pushed into the canal at all, so it really just sat snugly on his temple.
There seemed to be a lot of duties for him, but he could handle it. "Roger." With a confident reply, Luke turned to the Sergeant. "Okay, are there people coming in right now, or any who need help getting to medical?"
Sergeant Adams looked a little bemused at him, but seemed to snap out of it quickly. He couldn't really blame him, but it felt kind of bad if he held anything up by being so conspicuous. Adams quickly informed him that a team was bringing a large group, 5-6 adults, in, with at least two injured. "Okay, I'll be there in a moment."
After a pause, Luke turned back to Ranger and asked, "So far, so good? I'm off." Then he hurried out of the command, wincing at the renewed sensory onslaught, before following the Sergeant's lead through the camp.

Christmas trees, huh? That was fun, and as good a target as anything. Keeping away from the gates, Luke followed Glitch, still trying to keep his senses alert.
Once they stopped by the trees, Luke paused. There was a new sound now, closer but quiet, and he wasn't sure what it was. It sounded like...water? Wait, crap-
Luke made a high-pitched yelp as cold water sprayed from behind him, quickly soaking through his shirt and into his fur even as he rushed after Glitch. He shook some droplets from his head; as far as things to accidentally trigger on the X-Men's property, sprinklers were hardly the worst, but was annoying to have to dry off for it, and it took a while.
Also there was something mushy in his hand. He lifted it and looked at his palm, and realized that he'd been holding a roll of paper which was now a blob of dripping ex-paper. He frowned at it.
"That wasn't great." Luke glanced at Glitch. She looked okay, and it wasn't that much water, but he didn't want this to turn into a trip to the infirmary. Or, wherever she'd need to go for repair. Not the point!

It was an awful lot to take it, and Luke was trying his best not to look shell-shocked or anything.
Signing up for the team had seemed like a great idea. And he didn't really want to go back on that, or anything; the issue of wildfires in California was kind of a big deal since, y'know, lots of people live there and huge parts of it are on fire? Of course, now that he was actually in Cali, it was kind of a rough thing to adapt to.
First off, he'd never been on a plane before, and while it wasn't exactly a passenger plane (oh God that would have been a nightmare), the fact that his teammate(?) got them a ride on a military transport/bomber was...a different experience altogether. Luckily he'd dozed off after about an hour, so it hadn't been the worst thing.
Then there was the 6-hour drive to the scene of the emergency, which had been 'interesting'. The truck had AC thankfully, because the steps between the plane and getting into the vehicle had felt like he'd stepped into Hell. What conversation they shared was basically ground rules and basics. It had repeatedly been made for Luke that he was to follow his superiors and not get into stuff on his own. That was fine, really; he wasn't really feeling any bravado right now.
The majority of the trip was him trying to psych himself up into this. He'd done training and all, and it seemed like things were in control--at least on the leadership level--but it was still kind of nerve-wracking. He was trying to keep himself focused and relaxed, but he was pretty sure Ranger would notice his fur all puffed out in anxiety.
"Gotcha. And following your lead." The situation report first, then they would get to work. Steps helped. Luke hopped down from the huge truck, and immediately the heat hit him, almost literally. Recoiling as he shut the door, Luke winced as his tongue instinctively slipped between his lips. That was probably not going to look too professional, but it wasn't like that was on him.
"Guh..." Luke grinned sheepishly at Ranger. "We don't get weather like this in New England, huh?" The smell of smoke was pretty strong even from here, and he definitely picked up the faint, almost ephemeral sound of the raging flames.
