The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"I do many odd jobs, but not steady work yet," Aleksandr replied after swallowing down the bite he was chewing. His mouth was larger than the average person's, but he was trying to pace himself through his meal so the other young man wouldn't feel rushed. The bread helped to slow him down a little, but only so much.
"I would like to be trying for more modeling. I have done a few jobs and it is very fun. Getting paid to be adored would be a good life to have." And a good way to meet other interesting individual he imagined, especially in the circles that were looking for mutants to photograph. Demand for unusual faces wasn't particularly high, but it was slowly growing nonetheless. Sometimes he liked to imagine his would be the face to really give the movement a good foothold. A silly dream maybe, but fun anyway.
He fell silent for a moment at the thought, allowing the brief daydream to float through his mind again while he finished the last of his burger and picked at the remaining fries. The waitress came with the check and assurances of no rush to complete the transaction. Aleksandr fished his wallet out of the mess of tails by his neck and slid a few bills into the book's inner pocket.
"The Mansion is maybe the best place for you to be staying," he began, placing the little black folder at the edge of the table for the waitress to fetch next time she came by, "But if it is taking too long to get in there are empty rooms on my floor in the apartment I am living at. We can maybe sneak you in for some days if we are quiet."

"Famous or not you should always be creating more, if that is the thing you love to do," the snake replied with a nod, placing the napkin on the table and smoothing it out. "You will never be getting famous if you do not. Not that famous is the only reason for making art." quite the contrary, he'd found. Personal pieces were almost always more interesting and more moving than the ones created for the sake of fame or maintaining a brand.
The waitress returned with their plates and Aleksandr sat back, swept up the napkin sketch and slid his drink to the far side of the table so the plates could be placed down. He thanked the woman as she slid away and draped the drawing over a section of his tail, out of the way of any burger grease that might accidentally drip away from the plate.
"You are a composer also?" he asked, curious about the mention of the orchestra. It wasn't often he met someone like that, but seeing the way he drew it made sense. They were both movement oriented as he understood it. "You are very talented. I think you will be making a name for yourself before very long. It can't hurt to try being known while you are here also."

Aleksandr couldn't say he'd ever chased a dog for any kind of distance before, but he was fairly sure the ones that weren't used for racing only tended to run flat-out for relatively short distances. A mutant dog, on the other hand, might have been able to run for miles without slowing too much. He hadn't ever chased a mutant dog either, so there was really no way for him to tell. The snake man was fast himself, but he was no distance runner. He had enough speed and stamina to outrun most normal humans in a sprint, but even with all of his abundant muscle mass working for him snakes just weren't made for long distance pursuit.
He had gained on the canine initially, but when the mutt pulled that dirty trick and knocked the runner off his feet he'd gained himself a better head start. Aleksandr had been just close enough that he wouldn't have been able to swerve quickly enough to avoid the fallen man while still continuing on his current path. Even trying to stop short and curling back on himself he still managed to collide with the cursing man just hard enough to send him tumbling a few extra feet.
Offering apologies in between bouts of cursing in Russian he tried to help the other man back up onto his feet while the stranger also offered a selection of cursing in English. His assistance was understandably brushed off, but even if he understood the anger he was angry enough himself to engage in a short shouting match before the runner seemed to realize what he was yelling at and stormed of in a huff.
Fuming, Aleksandr turned his attention back down the path where the dog had headed. There was no way he'd catch up to him now and with so many scents in the air and the cold ground making it harder to leave paw prints it would be difficult to track the mutt down. Grumbling to himself he continue back down the path nonetheless, moving at a much more leisurely pace and trying to catch his breath. With any luck the fleabag had stopped to check the wallet once he'd gotten far enough away from the snake man and he'd be able to catch up. If not he'd try circling back to the pile of clothes like he'd planned earlier and hope the kid went back to fetch them as he hoped.

"We are not accepted always, but I think we are moving in right direction. Here the X-Men are working with police, but they were not always. If I am remembering the right way they have been having trouble with acceptance in the past also before they start working with police," he replied with a bit of a shrug. He hadn't been in the country for very long, but he was certain he had heard of there being turmoil between the X's and the general public at different points in time, especially when larger crime organizations were at their peak, and especially during the Registration. "I think problems will work out for your side eventually. And you will get back into your side of the world before it has been too long."
The snake man listened and watched curiously as the other young man tried to explain what it was he did artistically. He only looked up from the sketch in progress when the waitress stopped by to drop off their drinks with promises that the food would be out soon as well. Aleksandr favored her with a smile and a thank you before shifting his attention back to the scribbling pen.
He slid it closer and lifted it to get a good look at what had been drawn once Benji had finished scratching away with his pen. He had recognized the name that had been given from somewhere, but seeing what was on the napkin brought the work back to his memory and he could see the inspiration. He may not have completely understood what had been sketched out, but it was lovely nonetheless. "This is very nice," he said, tilting the napkin first one way and then the other to play with the way the shapes looked and interacted. "I like this movement drawing. I would like to see your finished work also. I bet it is also very good."

Not even two minutes had passed and this was by far one of the stranger meetings Aleksandr had gotten wrapped up in. He couldn't think of anything that might have prepared him for the sight of the kid stuffing the pilfered wallet into his mouth. His outstretched hand lowered a few inches in his surprise, his jaw working as if he wanted to say something but there just were no words to respond to that kind of action. Not that he would have had much time to reply anyway as the thief promptly disappeared and a dog took his place. Again unexpected, though it did explain the faint smell of fur he'd been tasting on the air.
The dog dropped, it's little tail nub made it's butt wiggle in an absurd kind of way, and then to took off. It took a moment to process everything that had just happened, but once the gears began turning in the snake man's head again a deep scowl settled onto his face before he took off after the furry criminal. He wasn't sure how fast the dog could go or for how long, but he was almost certain he could outpace the beast in the long run. Aleksandr's form sank, his torso hovering only a few inches off the ground as his tail lashed furiously and propelled him forward. He could outrun a human easily, but he'd never raced a dog before so this was going to be a bit of a learning experience for him. Either way he had the kid's scent and could track him for at least a short distance if he lost sight of him. If he had to he'd circle back to where the pile of clothes had been abandoned, figuring the thief wouldn't want to leave them behind before he tried to escape the park for good.
"You had better be praying I don't catch you!" he shouted in between hissing out a string of curses in Russian, "I eat things bigger than you for every meal!" Would eating a shifter as an animal still be considered murder? Probably, but only if he was caught right? Would anyone even be able to tell the difference between a dog and a mutant that looked like a dog? That was probably something to figure out once he actually caught the kid. He'd just have to bite first and argue the ethics of it before he unhinged his jaw.

So the kid was into art. If he had to get tossed through that wormhole then he'd wound up in the right place to land. The city had countless different places and activities of the artistic persuasion to look into. Aleksandr had poked around a few spots and was looking to get himself more involved in the scene in one way or another as well. He just had to actually settle in and give it a real shot rather that flitting around and treating it all like some kind of social game. He really did need to learn to draw a stronger line between work and play sometimes.
"Difficulty is good for starting creativity. No so good for other things, though," he commented. It was a shame so many artists seemed to suffer or feel the need to suffer to create their work. It certainly was an incredible coping mechanism, though, and how inspiring it was to cope in a way that had the potential to change the word. "It is a shame your world is not so accepting of mutants. There is still mutant hatred here also, but it is getting better. I hope your world gets better also." It would take time and effort, but they could get there. "What is it that you are creating?"

It was cloudier than he'd anticipated, the time the sun was able to break through being much too short for his taste. Anything but cloudless days weren't to his taste, really. Uninterrupted sunlight was one of the purest joys in the world and it seemed that the world was conspiring against him to leech away not only his warmth but his happiness. Whenever the clouds passed by again to dim the light Aleksandr found himself getting crankier and wondering if the outing had been worth it at all. Stubborn as he was about his time outside he was really only doing himself a disservice by trying to get his body to tolerate the seasonal change longer than he should. It would take him hours to soak up enough heat back at his apartment before he felt comfortable again. It might be time to throw in the towel and start hunkering down until spring came back around.
He was so absorbed with his unhappy internal back and forth that he barely registered the creeping vibrations from feet slowly stepping closer. Lazily his tongue flickered out, tasting a faint scent of cologne with an undercurrent of dog fur. He paid little mind to whoever it was, unbothered by the occasional bold stranger that would venture closer to get a better look at him. He couldn't blame them, after all who wouldn't want a better look at such a gorgeous creature? Normally he'd turn up the charm and flash a smile or a wink but he was much too occupied with his twisting and coiling to be bothered with entertaining anyone that didn't engage him first. Sometimes it was too cold for even him to be charming.
It wasn't until he felt the warmth from an errant hand brush up against one or two of the tails attached to his head that he really started to pay attention. The touch was only just barely there, but for someone so accustomed to seeking heat even a gentle graze in such chilly weather caught his attention. No doubt someone had reached out in curiosity and hesitated only for the squirming tails to coil just widely enough to collide with them. It wasn't unheard of for especially brave individuals to invite themselves to touch his tails, though they usually aimed for his body rather than the ones on his head. He couldn't say he cared for their lack of manners, but he usually let it slide. With such a tease of warmth this time though, and so briefly, he found himself feeling a little less forgiving.
"Is rude to touch without asking," he snapped out, turning his upper body over to locate the offending individual only to find the young man already starting to make a determined retreat. The snake man gave a huff and very nearly turned himself back around when he caught a glimpse of a familiar object it the kid's grip. His own hand quickly raked through the tails near the base of his skull, finding that he'd lost his grip on his wallet. The chill must have let his tails go just numb and slack enough that he hadn't realized it had been left loose enough to slip away from him so easily. Aleksandr simply stared after them man for a few more steps, floored by the sheer audacity of the action before his temper really flared and set him in motion.
As sluggish as he was feeling with the chill settling into his muscles he was still quick enough to close the distance between the two of them, coming up beside the stranger and turning sharply to circle in front of him. "It is not right to take things that are not belonging to you," he chided, his tongue sliding out in agitation as he held his hand out for his wallet. "I suggest you give it back."

There was a decided chill beginning to settle into the air signalling that winter would be out in full force before too much longer. The ground was getting harder and colder and decidedly less pleasant to feel beneath his scales as he glided over it. There was less and less warmth to leech from it even on sunny days as the light grew colder and further away. People were starting to pull out their scarves and hats and swap their sweatshirts for heavier coats. Loathe as he was to cover his beautiful scales Aleksandr was putting off wearing winter clothing for as long as he could. Instead he'd started piling more and more blankets around his apartment and pulling spare space heaters out of where he'd stashed them.
Still, in spite of the cold he was determined to spend as much of whatever time he had left outside before he wouldn't be able to stand it anymore and had to shut himself away for most of the season. The Park was still his destination of choice, though he found himself enjoying his favorite spots less and less as the chill began to settle into his large body. He found the sunniest spots he could and settled himself either on patches of concrete or rocks to soak up whatever warmth they still had to offer.
Watching the people mill around the park was still mostly enjoyable, but seeing the ones that were all bundled up just served to remind him of how chilly his poor scales were. He shifted and curled at an almost constant rate, rotating his body to warm different patches of skin as they cooled in the crisp air. Stubborn as he was about trying to enjoy himself while he could he still found the temperature making him cranky but he be damned if he'd be chased inside any sooner than he intended.

The steak and cheese was a good choice. Aleksandr had tried it once or twice but found the burgers to be just a little bit easier to handle than the shredded meat. Supposedly steak and cheese sandwiches just weren't the same without the bread, either, but it was a bit much or him to try to chew. The burger was definitely the more rewarding of the two, not that he would complain or felt that he was having to settle. He wouldn't keep coming back if he thought he was getting the worse end of the deal.
The waitress came and went with more flattery heaped upon her by the snake man as she struggled not to let it overwhelm her. Sometimes he just liked to see how quickly he could get them to blush or stumble over their words, his own private, harmless game. His head turned mostly back toward the young man across from him as he was addressed, though most of his attention lingered a moment more on the waitress as she retreated to the kitchen to start filling the order. Once she was out of sight he turned his gaze back to his lunch companion.
"What to do depends on what you are wanting to do," he began with a shrug. The city was packed with different places and activities that could cater to nearly everyone if they knew what they were looking for. But he supposed a stranger from out of town, so to speak, may not even know that much. "I most like the park for spending the day. There is good space for sunbathing and lots of people to watch. But there are also many bars and clubs, coffee shops, book stores, theaters, museums. It will be easy to be keeping yourself busy until you can get back home."

Aleksandr simply shrugged in response to Benji's doubts. He was probably right, but there were a number of odd individuals living in the city and it wouldn't be all that out for the ordinary to find that someone was amusing themselves by gifting and then un-gifting loaded wallets at random. At least it was relatively harmless fun, unlike the more violent happenings he'd sometimes skimmed over in the news. Still, pocketing the wallet and moving on was probably the best course of action. Losing that much cash again was only fun for the thief.
"Yes, it should be maybe only one or two streets left from here," he replied, turning again to continue on to their destination. He wasn't so good with street names so sometime he got the street corners mixed up, but he could remember what was around the diner well enough to find it again with little trouble, even if it was sometimes on the opposite side of the road than he remembered it being last time.
It wasn't a particularly large space, hole-in-the-wall being a petty apt descriptor. Still, it did a decent amount of business, particularly since it was so welcoming to mutants. Tee semi-retro vibe tended to attract people that appreciated dining aesthetic as well. Aleksandr couldn't remember stopping in when it was any less than half full. "Here we go," he said as he crossed the sidewalk to sidle against the wall and hold the large door open for his smaller companion to pass through. It would be easier for him to get inside the building in front of the snake man, rather than trying to navigate around his long tail in the entryway.
One of the waitresses stepped out of the back room at the sound of the door's bell jingling and flashed a smile and a wave as the pair entered, greeting the overlarge reptile by name. Aleksandr was rather hard to forget as it was, but he'd made a habit of turning up the charm around the staff as well, at least enough that most of them could recall his name when he stopped by. The waitress grabbed a pair of menus and flagged them over to an empty table where he'd have enough room to stow his large body.
Thanking the young woman with a wink, he settled in and flipped the menu over once or twice without paying too much mind to what was on it. He was probably just going to get his usual. "The hamburgers here are very good," he recommended, placing the menu down after decided that yes, his usual choice would do. "But there are other sandwiches and some things that are fried that are very good also." He couldn't vouch for the salads or other non-meat dishes, but he doubted they would be unsatisfactory.

"Reverse pickpocket?" The phrase didn't sound familiar, but it was always possible he'd come across the term before and simply forgotten it. Pickpocketing wasn't ever really much of a concern for Aleksandr anyway since he hardly ever had pockets to pick. Still it wasn't too hard to figure out what the young man meant when he clarified the discovery of a handful of unfamiliar cash in the wallet. So he'd gotten money instead of losing it. Interesting.
"This is a bad thing?" he asked, crossing his arms and cocking a brow at the young man's confusion. Extra cash had never been a complaint that he'd heard before. Once he got over the shock of the discovery Aleksandr was sure Benji would be rather overjoyed at the gift. A pocket full of spending money was a bit of a blessing for someone who was lost. "Now you will be able to buy many maps and many meals." Maybe even find a hotel room for a couple of nights depending on how many twenties were stuffed in there, which would buy him a little time to try and figure out his dilemma with some level of comfort. "This is good thing. But you are maybe wanting to put the wallet away or the reverse pickpocket might be reversed again."

Aleksandr frowned at the answer he was given, displeased to hear that the other side of the Rip was not such a friendly place for mutants. He'd personally dealt with open hostility toward mutations on many occasions in the past, particularly back in Russia, but he'd also seen a lot of support for it. It was almost a balance, but things were gradually tipping in favor of the supportive population, slowly but surely. But if arrests of the helpful crowd were being made on the Other Side things probably weren't going so very well for their supporters. What a shame. He hoped things would turn out for the better for those people.
While the young man was keeping step behind him the snake man did his best to keep a steady, easy pace. He was large but he could move pretty quickly and wasn't hard to outstrip a biped's leisurely pace if he wasn't paying attention. It was bad enough for those living in the city to get lost in the crowd, but someone from a different reality all together wouldn't even have the benefit of familiar markers to help reorient themselves. It wouldn't do to lose the poor kid before they even got to their first destination. The only thing worse than lost was lost and hungry.
When Benji called for a halt Aleksandr stopped and spun around, his tail beginning to coil beneath himself to keep it mostly out of the way of passing feet. "I did not hit you with tail did I?" he asked, fearing he'd not been navigating carefully enough with the young man following so closely. Even at a slower pace his tail was heavy and it could easily knock someone off balance if he brushed by them too closely. But seeing the way he was patting himself down put that particular concern to rest. "You are missing something?" he guessed again, his gaze sweeping the ground quickly in case the missing item was still nearby. "What is it you are looking for?"

With barely a cloud in the sky the sunlight felt amazing. It had lost the intensity of the summer heat, but it hadn't quite slipped fully into the cold light that lasted throughout the winter. The heat lamps and space heaters back at his apartment just couldn't compare. There was no truly satisfying artificial replacement for the real thing. It was going to be a difficult few months until the warmth returned again in the spring. He might just have to laze around until sunset to make the most of the day.
Aleksandr was just starting to doze off under the warmth when he felt the distinct vibrations of feet stomping closer quickly followed by someone demanding that he leave. He first opened one eye lazily, locating the shoes of the angry individual before rolling onto his back and stretching, lavishing in the feeling of a warmer patch of grass that the movement had found. "I was not seeing a humans only sign on the gate," he replied languidly, opening his other eye to gaze calmly up at the unhappy face of his new acquaintance. Being accosted out in public was nothing new for Aleksandr and he'd long since gotten used to the hostility of some strangers. Mostly it was entertaining and just a little bit sad.
"Is not very polite to be shouting at people," he continued, slowly beginning to curl his tail up under himself and sitting up so he could recline against the coils. "You will be bothering the other people in the park." At the very least the kid would start turning heads and drawing attention. The snake man was used to attracting attention, but when someone started to get aggressive that was when things tended to get a little dicey. Most people tended to put their heads back down and ignore confrontations, but there were always a few nosy people that tried to escalate the situation in one way or another. As long as at least one of them remained calm then hopefully they'd be left alone.

"Yes, of course. Is this way," he replied, turning and waiting for the other young man to fall in step before he began to head down the street. One thing about being so large and unusual was that people often parted on the street and allowed Aleksandr to pass with relative ease. It made traveling in crowds a little easier, though there were always a few people that still tripped over or trod on his poor tail. At least on the sidewalk there was some flow to the foot traffic that made it easier to avoid scuffs on his scales.
"Is nice to meet you, Benji. I am Aleksandr," he said, returning the smile. He really should work on introducing himself sooner. He always tended to forget, but thankfully no one seemed to hold it against him. Maybe it had something to do with his appearance. It could be rather jarring, or dazzling depending on the person, so it was understandable that swapping names would slip the mind now and again. Truly a blessing and a curse.
"It is very different on the other side of the Rift?" he asked as he wove his way around a small line for a food vendor at the edge of the sidewalk. He was getting curious about the differences on either side, too, and the odd way Benji had asked about the X-Men had piqued his interest. "How are you getting to this side of things?"

There were few places in the city that could compare to Central Park. Aleksandr had been living in New York for several years since moving to the States and he was still madly in love with the greenery and even the other park-goers, though to a lesser extent. There was just something about being out in nature among the green spaces that made him feel better. It was good for the heart and the soul. The opportunity to people watch was just a bonus, really.
Since the Rift had opened up he'd found that there were fewer people visiting the park and those that did seemed to be mostly trying to keep to themselves. He could understand that for the most part. Finding out there was a whole other dimension or something sitting right on top of their own was enough to send anyone's head spinning. It certainly hadn't stopped him from enjoying himself, though. On the contrary, it gave him an excellent excuse to get out more often before the cold really began to set in and the absence of the normal Park crowds meant more space for him to stretch out in.
And stretch he did. He'd found a nice, sunny patch of grass near a smaller pond and had wasted little time in unfolding to his full length and sprawling across the warm grass. He rested his chin on his folded arms and heaved a contented sigh. The ducks and geese gave him a wide berth, as did some passerbys, but that was just fine with him. It was a shame they wouldn't come to appreciate him up close, but he was just a gorgeous from a distance and it didn't stop him from entertaining himself by watching them scurry past. Not everyone could appreciate beauty like his, but he wasn't one to deprive them of the opportunity to try anyway.
