The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

Amber wasn't sure that she'd grown but she'd take the other woman's word for it. Grown monstrous, certainly, if one defined monstrous as 'walking corpse'. "I'm only half dead. Maybe that makes a difference?" At least, that was her working theory.
Leaving the plate where it was, she took the key and followed Ghost up the stairs and into her new room. She nodded, listening attentively to the instructions given to her. "Thank you again for letting me stay here. I don't...I don't really know what I'm doing yet, but I appreciate being welcomed here." A safe place would help. Here, she might be able to actually find a new direction.
"Goodnight. You sleep well also." A hug was something that would have been accepted but never offered or asked for. She turned to enter her new room and start the newest chapter in her life.

It was only after Jack introduced herself for the second time that Amber realized she had all ready done so when she had first walked into the room. She reddened in embarrassment. No one else would make a foolish mistake like that and it made her feel worse than she all ready did. Why was it so hard to just talk to people?
Fortunately she was distracted from her own less than sunshiny thoughts by a question about how long ago she'd been a student. She thought about it a moment before answering. "I think maybe 4 years ago. I don't know for sure. Some of the time I spent away wasn't in the best circumstances. I lost maybe a year of memory and spent some time living in the woods." Was that too much information to share with a stranger? She wasn't ashamed of her past or her choices, even if some of them had been difficult.
"I think I'm happy to be back though." Mostly. Probably. "How long have you been doing security here?" She took a bite of her sandwich, still delighted by the simple human foods she'd missed during the last 2 years.

The big red mutant noticed her and by that point it was too late to decide to run and hide. From her present vantage point, it was hard to tell exactly how large he was. When one was scarcely 2 feet all themselves, pretty much everyone looked tall. She did, however, notice a very impressive set of teeth and an equally impressive set of claws, not to mention what looked like a powerful tail. For a moment she wished she were in her larger, deinonychus form, but the thought was fleeting. The Mansion rarely took on mutants who were likely to attack random strangers and even if he was in an attacking mood, one of the advantages of being so small was that she was very dexterous and difficult to catch. Besides, he looked more curious than hostile.
Staring up at the mutant, she chirped and bowed her long neck. How did one indicate that one was actually a mutant girl rather than an actual dragon when one couldn't actually speak? That was always one of the challenges of shapeshifting and meeting strangers. If the ground had been made of dirt she might have scratched her name into the earth but that wasn't really an option here. Instead, she offered another trilling chirp and a toothy grin. Distant relative of birds she might be, but if only she had to vocal chords of a raven she might be able to actually speak basic words. Now, maybe that was a possibility to consider trying to learn!
The second voice she had heard in the distance seemed to have wandered off. Perhaps her unnatural bird-like chirps might bring her back, or perhaps not. Although the sounds she made were similar to modern birds, they were also distinctly different than any species native to the area or to the time period.

A primarily terrestrial predator, her research discovered it to be over 3 meters in length with a weight of around 1 tonne. Paleontologists surmised it to be an active predator, chasing down prey on long legs. A distance relative of modern crocodiles, it had vicious, long teeth, was heavily armored and was very likely a nocturnal hunter. In a world often hostile to mutants, it would make an excellent addition to her existing arsenal of forms.
Once the target of her desire was chosen, next came the somewhat trickier task of finding out where to find a piece of fossil to imprint. To her great fortune, the almost complete skull was housed at the American Museum of Natural History. It would be the second time she'd traveled there in order to acquire a new form, the first time having been the pterodaustro with her sister Aura. People had gotten hurt in the attempt, then, and they had barely gotten out. Aura wasn't exactly known for her stealth or her subtlety and, in retrospect, perhaps hadn't been the best person to choose to accompany her. Still, no one had died and everything had worked out in the end.
This time she planned to travel alone and this time she planned to make a lot less noise and cause a lot less of a commotion. With luck, she'd pay her fare to get into the public area, change into the rat-sized mecistotrachelos in order to sneak into the non-public area, find her query and then sneak out on the clothing of someone travelling back outside. That was the plan, anyway. Time would tell if the plan had any chance of actually working.
The first part, and unusually tricky given her extreme sensitivity to the sun, was to figure out when to leave and how to get to the museum. Time was on her side and she waited for an overcast, rainy day to venture out. It wasn't a perfect solution and, given time, even an overcast sky would still burn her, but it offered time and opportunity. She left in early evening, wrapped in her usually layered robes, and took a taxi to her location. Fortunately, despite his mysterious departure, it turned out that she still had at least some access to the money that had been his and, by extension, been available to his adopted children.

An invitation to come sit, well that was a good start at least. It meant that maybe, just maybe, she was re-learning to read social cues and this was an opportunity to converse without too much pressure. If she wasn't so stubborn as to make this new life for her work, she might have broken down and just given up, resigned to a life of abject loneliness. Life, however, wasn't always easy and she was prepared to tackle its many challenges.
A quick trip to the fridge to grab a sandwich and she sat down across from the giant crustacean. She really did seem larger up close! Had she noticed the less than neat way the other ate, it wasn't something she would have given much thought to. Humans cared much more about cleanliness while eating than dinosaurs. In her human body she might have eaten much like any other human, but she was used to tearing raw flesh off of prey she'd killed herself and eating it whole, so what did a few bits of dropped food matter?
"Thank you." Politeness was good, right? "My name's Amber. What's yours?" A small start but a start nevertheless.

Amber wasn't intimated for traditional reasons. The stranger may have towered over her (although to be fair, at 5' most people towered over her) and she may have looked decidedly inhuman, but Amber had experienced a lot in her short life and there weren't many things larger than dinosaurs. As a styracosaurus, she was easily the size of an elephant with a 2 ft horn jutting off of her nose and knowing she had a form like that up her sleeve provided a very real sense of comfort.
No, her uncertainty was far more generalized than that and had much more to do with talking to people in the general sense than it did with talking to one particular, very large and very well armored, person. She dearly hoped that one day soon that horrible anxiety would go away, but that wasn't today.
"Hi." She hated her terrible awkwardness. "I guess I'm new here. I was a student a long time ago. Then I left. Now I'm back again." She continued to stand there, uncertain. A glance towards the stranger, towards the fridge where she knew she could find pre-made sandwiches and back to the stranger. "Um, would it be all right if I sat with you?" Or she could sit alone. That was good too. Probably better, even. She was good at being by herself, not so good at being with people.

Since her return, Amber had been doing a lot of thinking about what she wanted out of life and what she hoped to gain from returning to the human world. Completing high school was something that the motherly Ghost had recommended but her answer to that was far from certain. Could she, as something barely alive and looking as monstrous as she did, integrate into the world enough for something like a high school diploma to even matter? She had more than a few doubts.
What wasn't in doubt was a re-discovered love of knowledge. The first time she sat before a computer since her return had felt awkward and unnatural but once she started looking up her various interests online, she remembered how much she missed learning things just for the sake of doing it. There was just so much information out there it could very easily get to be overwhelming and she spent more than one night wiling the hours away on online expeditions. This was a definite draw to remaining in the human world!
It was during one such night that she made the decision that, along with her new life, perhaps it was time to seek a change in her old life as well or, more specifically, to change one of her alternate forms for something new. It had been years since she'd made such a change and, as now was the time that change was happening, it felt like the right thing to do.
Such an important decision required a great deal of thought and consideration. She knew she was limited to 5 forms from the Mesozoic era and the choice of which form to lose was just as important as the choice of which form to replace it. The compsognathus was the one that would be lost as, as much as she would miss it, it was the one that least fit into a useful niche. In honor of her lost sister, she wanted something formidable in a fight, something dangerous and intimidating. After many hours of research, she decided upon the kaprosuchus, a prehistoric crocodyliform that would fit all her needs.

Ambrosia smiled back, with far less toothiness and far less intimidation. Some relied upon intimidation while some relied upon charm, and she was definitely in the latter category. "I can see why people might choose to just listen to what you have to say and not argue about it. No one's scared of an elf girl." Not that she minded of course; being friendly was just the way she was. If people were afraid of her she'd be more sad than anything.
Ambrosia began walking towards their destination. "Well, music is pretty much my passion. Well, that and helping mutants. I connect mutants in need with resources to help them. As for powers, I can transform into a tiny dragon." Nope, not intimidating at all. When the word 'dragon' was attached to a form little larger than a cat, it was hard to be scary. "How about you? What do you do?" She left the question just as open ended.

"You play in a band? That's wonderful! What kind of music? Do you perform often?" She couldn't remember ever seeing Cait perform, but sometimes stage personas looked a lot different than day to day life and sometimes shows were crazy places and memories weren't always crystal clear. Then again, it didn't sound like she was a DJ and Ambrosia frequented electronic shows much more often than traditional instrument shows.
Hopefully she didn't mind the barrage of questions. She'd been told she could come across a little strong on occasion, especially when discussing her passions and music definitely qualified as a passion. Next to to helping people and especially helping fellow mutants, music was her main passion. No other single thing spoke to the soul in quite the same way.
"Seems like we've got a couple things in common. Guitar and violin are my main instruments of choice as well. I've recently taken up the flute but I'm not very good at that yet." Time and practice were all that was needed and in a few months she might well be able to bring out her newest acquisition and feel comfortable playing it in front of a crowd.

"Well, I'm glad I didn't' cause your poor phone too much trouble then." She could just imagine what kind of havoc that kind of job would cause to a cell phone, especially when you combined mutant powers to the mix. Maybe they needed super armor phone, or something, just for those people who were especially hard on their technology.
Number saved and phone put away, it felt good to make a new friend. She had her performer friends, of course, but sometimes she felt lonely in the big city. They were mostly all good people, but finding others with a real drive to do good in the world was a rarity.
Their second drinks arrived and Ambrosia nodded her thanks at the waitress. "My moms always encouraged an active lifestyle. I took dancing and violin lessons as a kid. They tried to get me into sports but that never quite panned out. Performance art, on the other hand, I took to immediately." She took a sip at her newly arrived frozen drink.
For almost a month Amber had been back in the city, returned from her self-imposed exile in the woods. To be back was...agonizing, wonderful, confusing, tumultuous all simultaneously. Was she glad to be back in the company of other mutants and other humans? Had she made the right choice in deciding to rejoin her 'kind? Well, that might depend upon the day one asked and how settled her emotions were feeling at the time. In other words: the jury was still out on that. Time would reveal all things.
Human food was a delight rediscovered. So many wonderful flavours and textures completely foreign in the little patch of forest she had called her territory. Rarely had she gone hungry, but there was a definite difference between being sated and truly appreciating those things you put into yourself or sustenance. Sure, there were things she couldn't eat as one of the drawbacks of being half dead, but why dwell on those things she couldn't' have when there were so many wonderful things she could?
To be sleeping inside again, under a roof and within the prison of 4 walls, that was something she was finding surprisingly difficult to settle back into. During those times when she was awake and active it wasn't so bad,but when she settled down to sleep it felt like those walls were pressing in on her, smothering her. Other humans seemed to think that a soft bed and a warm room were everything one could ask for in seeking comfortable sleep, but the cold barely bothered her and she'd gotten used to sleeping on the ground within her cozy, little den. Aside from the interactions with the humans themselves, it was definitely the hardest thing about coming back.
Which brought her to the humans themselves and her ability (or inability, as it often felt) to interact with them. As a dino, life was easy: Eat, sleep, hunt, protect oneself, occasionally play. There wasn't much more to life than that and if not for the horrible, biting loneliness, she might have learned to be content in that life. Among humans, however, there was so much more and it was all so complicated and confusing. There were so many utterly baffling rules and it was so easy to say or do the wrong things without meaning to or even being aware of the mishap. Thus, it was those very same humans with whom she craved contact who also served to cause her the most anguish since her return.

"I can't count the number of times chamomile has saved my butt! Seriously." Sometimes there was a balancing act to be maintained with caffeine in the morning and chamomile late at night in order to help maximize sleep and minimize morning zombieness. She was naturally adpated to be a creature of the night, with enhanced nightvision as well as superb hearing and smell. Not quite so much in human form, perhaps, but enough that her circadian cycles were much happier with her when she was allowed to sleep during the hottest and brightest parts of the day. Oh well. Maybe one day she'd be able to determine her own hours, but that certainly wasn't today.
"I think not sleeping properly is almost a precurser to living in this crazy city. Who has time for a full night's sleep now days?" She certainly didn't nor almost anyone else she knew. Too many hobbies and interests, maybe. Well, that combined with too many responsibilities.
Following her line of sight towards the instruments, she smiled. Music held the keys to the soul. "More than a few. I'm a muscision and and a dancer myself. How about you? Play anything?" She was always on the lookout for possible new jam partners.

"Oh gosh, your poor cracked phone! Did that happen tonight, saving me?" Well, that was certainly something to feel bad about. Maybe she should offer to replace the phone? Not that she had a lot of spare money lying around, but her life had basically been saved in the process so it was only right to maket he offer. Wasn't it? At least it seemed to still be working. She'd lost her own phone more than a couple times. Something about changing forms and flying away and leaving her clothing and worldy belongings behind. It didn't exactly serve for a long
Ambrosia gave out her own number. "I'd love to show you sometime. It can be quite a show." She'd been dancing and spinning for years and had even considered going professional with her act. If it wasn't for her passion for helping others, she might very well have done so. When the waitress appeared, she indicated a refill for herself, as well.
"I find performing very theraputic, plus its great exercise. Healthy body, healthy mind, right?"
