The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

"I do what I can," Ambrosia responded modestly. "There are so many mutants in need and so few people willing to help them. Mostly I just direct them to the resources that'll best help them, shelters, counselors, mutant friendly food banks and medical assistance, that sort of thing." That she even had to add the descriptor 'mutant friendly' in front of the words 'medical assistance' was a huge travesty but that was the world they lived in. A world where sometimes service was refused you simply because you happened to look a little different or have the wrong genes.
"One day soon I hope to get into school and actually become a social worker specializing in mutants. Don't get me wrong, I love music and love nothing more than to make people smile and forget about their worries for a while, but there's something satisfying about knowing you've made an actual difference in someone's life." Her parents had raised her well, giving her a strong sense of honor and responsibility. If you could help, you should help.
"I definitely look forward to the day we get to play together!" Enthusiasm coloured her words. "I think we could make beautiful music."

Amber shook her head. "I don't think I know San." She really didn't know very many people there. Ghost, of course, who had brought her in both times she had spent there. Most of the others who she'd known from her past were now gone. So it was very much like she was starting anew, for the very first time.
"Do you know Ghost? She's the one who let me stay here. Both times." She smiled fondly at the memory. At least some of her memories of the past weren't tainted by feelings of bitterness and regret. Ghost had never been anything but wonderful to her. Wonderful and motherly. She'd never actually had a real mother.
She continued eating her sandwich, thoughts wondering. "Do you like it here?" It was hard to imagine now liking it. The Mansion was one of the very few places she'd ever felt like she belonged, even a little bit.

"I've only ever lived in the city so I don't have much experience with animals. Well, I used to have a couple of kitties and a dog. Wish I could again but, you know, renting." Owning a home was another pipe dream when you worked retail and especially owning a home in the city. "I was one of those little girls who always wanted a pony. Never happened though." She laughed at the memory.
"I've seen a few of those stories myself," she grimaced. "I try to live by a pacifist philosophy but, I mean, sometimes certain people just deserve to be punched in the nose!" So maybe that wasn't the most extreme punishment one could conceive of, but it was the thought that mattered, right? Some people were terrible and didn't deserve the lives they had.
"I hope so," she responded, sounding melancholy. "When even mutants like me sometimes have problems, you know things are bad. But more positively, I've met a lot of wonderful humans as well who are also super passionate about helping mutants. Call me an optimist, but I like to think the good people outnumber the bad." It was just the bad that got all the attention because they caused all the trouble.

It had only been a few days since Amber's recent successful excursion to The Museum of Natural History in her pursuit of a new form to change into. The Kaprosuchus, otherwise known as the Boar Crock, was over 3 meters long, weighed almost a full tonne and was said to be a solo nocturnal hunter similar to that modern day large cats. In fact, all her research indicated it was something of a mix between a prehistoric crocodile and a large cat. She was itching to try it out.
Of course, there were certain challenges to being a 10 ft prehistoric crocodile wandering around the streets of New York City. Mainly: anyone who saw here was likely to panic and either try to kill her, run screaming in all directions and/or call some force to try and kill her. Although she didn't always have a lot of respect or understanding of human convention, spending the night running from cops and meta bots just didn't sound like much of a good time.
The only place large enough to experiment with her new body and the only place where such a body wasn't likely to cause mass panic was on Mansion grounds. Even there, however, it really was best to try and wait for a time where there weren't too many people around. Sure, all manner of mutants with all manner of bizarre and interesting powers were common there, but there was something primal about the fear that was felt in the fact of a nearly 2000 lb prehistoric predator, even if you did know it was probably just a shapeshifted mutant.
Finally, however, an opportunity presented itself. It was evening, threatening rain and cool enough that most of those who preferred outside opted to be somewhere else. Taking advantage of the relative lack of people, Amber removed her robes and set them under a tree. She then walked into a clearing and triggered a shift, little caring if anyone saw her naked before changing shapes. As always, sharp pain shot through her as bone and muscle warped and distorted and within less than a minute, girl was transformed into boar crock.
The strength in her limbs was immediately evident, incomparable to any other shape except, perhaps, the even larger styracosaurus. The world lit with new and wonderful senses; superb hearing, sight and smell. She growled and snapped clumsily at the air, trying out new vocal chords and new methods of movement.

A young boy sat down beside her, introducing himself as Chase. Although she was now physically in her 20s, in some ways she was still a teenager. At 16 she had ended up on the Brazil and spent a year as a deinonychus surviving in the rain forest. That year was largely lost time, she had only small flashes of her life there. Eventually she woke up, in a manner of speaking, and found herself feasting upon a dead human. It was not a memory she cared to remember.
A couple years later she had left the human world a second time, this time remaining closer to home a couple hours outside New York City and this time retaining her human mind. Still, her second foray into the wild lasted over 2 years and if those two years taught her many things about hunting and general survival, they taught her nothing about emotional and mental development or what it was to be a human adult.
"I'm Amber," she whispered as the teacher started speaking. She would have smiled but knew from experience that, now days, her smiling was less than reassuring.
The second arrival, introducing herself as Allegra, didn't seem nearly so comfortable in her presence as the first. Amusement warred with distress at the reaction with amusement winning out by a narrow margin. "Why not people?" Amber asked, raising her black eyes to meet those of the newcomer. Her expression remained deadpan. Maybe playing off her intimidation factor could be fun.
Just as the teacher started speaking, a robot girl entered. The different, varied mutants made her miss Sanctuary and her little lost family all the more.
As her new teacher spoke, Amber decided not to mention the fact that she didn't technically need to learn any of the skills he suggested were necessities in life. Eating was as simple as killing something and tearing flesh from bone. She had lived in a den in the woods for years, so she had that covered. Clothing was a human convention and a somewhat puzzling at that. Still, even if she didn't technically need any of these things, she wanted to learn. Part of being human again. For the moment, she had no questions.

Amber hadn't meant be to out all night nor had she meant to wander quite so deep into areas some might consider dangerous. Since her return to the human world from her self-imposed exile only a few weeks ago, she'd barely left the Mansion. With the exception of an expedition to the Museum of Natural History in order to acquire her newest Kaprosuchus form, she hadn't gone further than the Mansion property lines. She was getting claustrophobic and the only way to solve that was to leave for a few hours.
As was in her general nature, she left shortly after sunset, taking some transportable food with her. For the early part of the night she just walked, enjoying the cool spring air. No one bothered her and she she had no interest in speaking to anyone. With all the effort she'd been putting into reintegrating into the human world, tonight was about her and her own peace of mind. In solitude, she would find some of that peace. As much as she desired to have a pack again, so too did she need time to be with her own thoughts.
After some time walking as a human, she found a dry, out of the way alcove where she was able to hide her robes and change shape. As always, changing from one form to another was an excruciatingly painful experience, as bones shifted and muscles and flesh warped and twisted. It was, however, mercifully quick and where once stood a human girl, now stood a deinonychus. Instantly the world seemed more alive, blooming with the enhanced senses only a deadly predator like herself could have. She'd missed this. She'd needed this.
For most of the remainder of the night she continued her wanderings, experiencing the city in a different way than any human ever could. She kept to the shadows, as out of sight of curious eyes as she could. It was only as dawn was starting to color the sky that she returned to her robes and resumed her human form. Being careful to cover every inch of skin except the slit of her eyes, it was with some trepidation that she started making her way back to the Mansion. In the early dawn hours, before the sun was at its full strength, she could bear to be out for a while. Unfortunately, every passing hour increased the dangers of the sun and she had neither money nor any type of identification on her. Hopefully she hadn't wandered too far away from safety and she'd be able to make it back, without incident, before full daylight.

One of the first things suggested to Amber upon her return to the human world and the Mansion was that she go back to school and complete her GED. For many reasons she was unsure what the point would be. For one, her powers allowed her to survive with or without money. Between her resistance to the elements and the fact that she could hunt and kill whatever food she needed, money was more a want than a need. For another, how likely was it that a walking corpse could be truly a part of the human world, no matter how good her skills or education happened to be? Her re-integration into the human world could only go so far.
As days turned into weeks, however, and she began to rediscover what it was to be human and those things she enjoyed about being human. Very prominently on that list, was a love of learning. During the years she'd spent in self-imposed exile in the woods, she'd forgotten the simple joys of spending hours on the internet looking up various interests and learning for the simple sake of learning. As a dino, both her needs and desires were much simpler. A comfortable den, plentiful prey and a well patrolled territory were all that was required for a fulfilled life in the wild. She was no longer in the wild. She wanted more out of life.
So, after great contemplation and with more than a little trepadition, she found herself outside Gemma Taylor's office door. This woman was the one to speak to, so she'd been told, if she was actually serious about getting her high school diploma. She didnt' know if she was making the right choice or not and anxiety and indecision warred with hope and anticipation. It felt right. Mostly. Probably. She knocked timidly upon the door.

"Well, I've never actually been paid to play a festival," Ambrosia replied, feeling a little sheepish. "Its kind of a volunteer things. There are always lots of performers so we do renegade shows, away from the main stages. Singing, dancing and playing, the atmosphere is amazing! You should totally find a local festival some time and go. Nothing compares." She'd been going to festivals since before it was legal for her to drink.
"That would be amazing!" Her enthusiasm regarding making money with music was evident in her voice. She took the paper offered with Cait's number and passed her one of her shop cards. She'd gotten the cards printed herself. On the front they had the shop name, her name and her number. On the back was written 'If you're a mutant in need, please call. There are people who can help.'
"I would love it if you could hook me up. I've never been in a proper band before, but I'm pretty good." It wasn't ego if it was true, right?

Maybe it was time to go try new things. The enthusiasm Rianne showed for barrel racing was infectious. That, and she was starting to feel just a little bit giddy from the alcohol. "Who knows, maybe I'll have the opportunity to try that some day. Sounds like a real blast!"
It sounded like her new friend's parents were also among the good ones. It warmed her hear to hear happy stories in light of all the misery that was out in the world. "Parents rarely want to see their children hurt. I think that's a good sign." She smiled and took a sip of her marguerita.
"I grew giant ears and cat eyes so that was a little hard to hide from my parents," she laughed. "I mean, as far as being an obvious mutant goes, I think I got a pretty good package going on. Elves are cute, right? Cute definitely works in my favour when it comes to outside reactions. There's a lot of scary looking mutants out there and that makes their lives so much harder." Which was really sad.

Where could she hide long enough to change shapes and then sneak into the back area? The bathroom might have been the obious answer but the problem with that was there was no way to stash her clothing for later retrieveal. No, she needed somewhere else to hide. Fortunately, by this late point in the evening the crowds of people were starting to thin out. Perhaps, if she was quick enough, she might be able to jump behind one of the barriers without being seen and crowch in some of the display folliage.
Luck was with her that day. Having spotted a display that would serve her purposes nicely, aptly enough a late cretaceous display housing a family of triceritops and lush jungle folliage, it took around 10 minutes of waiting before the moment came where no eyes were watching. Heart pounding in her chest, she quickly slipped under the barricade and crowched behind an especially large fern. The colour of her robes had been chosen specifically for this purposes, dark greens that blended in nicely with the plants surrounding them. Once she had her privacy, it only took a minute for her form to shrink and distort and where once had been a young woman, now stood a tiny Mecistotrachelos.
Next was the challenge of getting from the display she had hidden herself within over to the doors leading to the research labs. There were both advantages and challenges to being the size of a rat and some of those advantages and disadvantages were one in the same: People often weren't likely to look down. Her diminutive size would largely work in her favour, so long as she could avoid being inadvertantly injured by the much larger throngs of humans.
As always happened when she assumed one of her dino forms, her senses alighted with sights, sounds and smells that no human with their dulled senses could ever imagine. An arboreal insectivore, she was fast and agile for her size and possessed both excellent hearing and sight. By her estimate, her best bet of success lay in skittering from one display to another, staying near to the walls and hopefully out of sight of curious eyes.

When Ghost had first recommended Amber complete her GED upon her first night back at the Mansion, she had been uncertain. After all, with the ability to change shape at will and subsist upon the flesh of any animal she hunted herself and with a strong resistance to any weather condition, money was more of a want than a need. There was also strong doubt that no matter how successful her reintegration into human society, a walking corpse would never truly be accepted into any station where having a GED would matter.
A great deal of thought went into her decision to pursue to diploma. In the days and weeks since her return, she had begun remember the things about human life that she enjoyed, and the things her human body could do that none of her other forms could. The use of hands with opposable thumbs that lead to the use of things like books and computers almost made the lack of strength and dulled senses worth it. If her human self still felt like her inferior self, at least she was making progress.
It was, in the end, her re-discovered love of learning that prompted her to seek out Gemma and sign the papers that would get her back into school. Even if it would never matter in the human world, it mattered to her and that's what was important. It was necessary to balance the two disparate sides of her self.
Coming down to the home economics classroom, Amber felt nervous. This was the first time she'd been around so many people all at once for a prolonged period of time and the first time she'd been in a classroom for many years. It has difficult to tell her age, given the nature of the physical aspects of her mutation, at 5 foot she could have been 15 years old or 35. How did one determine the age of a corpse, anyway? As the teacher spoke, she did her best to quash the urge to flee in the opposite direction and never turn back.

The ride to the museum was uneventful. Wrapped in her robes as she was, the fact that she was a mutant was far less obvious than it would have been had she been wearing more conventional clothing. In theory, she was an adult now so perhaps it was time to consider learning to actually drive so she didn't have to rely upon taxis to get where she needed to go. It was always a risk, stepping into the vehicle of another and assuming they were both going to take here safely where she needed to go and also that they didn't have a great hatred of mutants.
The lineup to get into the musuem was likewise uneventful. Even during overcast days, she disliked being outside during the daylight. She could feel the sun through the clouds and through the layers of robes, beaming down at her and theatening to burn her sensative skin. Even with only the slits of her eyes and her hands exposed, the sun felt like an implicit threat. For years, even before she had retreated from the human world, she had resented her weak human form. Not only was it soft and fragile with senses far inferior to any other shape, but it couldn't tolerate the harmful rays of the sun for more than a few minutes without developing painful burns. Sometimes it was hard to accept those limitations.
The original intent, once inside, was to go straight to her intended destination. However, something about the place brought out the long lost little kid inside her and she couldn't resist the temptation to make her way slowly through the many different displays first. It was hard, being among the throngs of humans but as discomfort warred with fascination, fascination won. Of course, there was a special interest in the dinosaur exibits, but those creatures who lived in other eras of the earth's history were almost as fascinating to behold.
Only after exploring all the exibits that interested her did Ambert make her way to the back of the museum where the public was not allowed. The next part would be the tricky part; finding a place where she could hide long enough to shapeshift into something small and unassuming. Hopefully she could find a corner where her robes could be stashed for retrieval later, but even if not, there was nothing important in the pockets to be worried about leaving behind.

It was so much fun talking to someone as passionate as herself when it came to music and performance. "That's pretty cool. I mostly play folk tunes. I'm not in a band but I love to jam. Dance and music go beautifully together and I get out to festivals as often as I can, both to perform and to enjoy the performances of others." Yet another thing that didn't happen nearly often enough, especially recently.
"Wouldn't it be amazing if it were possible to actually make a living off of performing?" Now that was the ultimate in pipe dreams. It would probably never happen, but that wasn't going to ever stop her from performing. Making people smile was a delight.
"It is kind of a weird coincidence. Hey, what do you say we exchange contact info and maybe play some music together at some point?"

"Barrel racing? Well that sounds neat!" Ambrosia had never even been to a rodeo before, let alone participated in one. Some rodeo games, she knew, had a reputation for animal cruelty and she wanted nothing to do with those. Others, however, not so much. She'd always loved animals and the only reason she didn't have a pet presently was because of her obsurdly busy schedule. Maybe it was the dragon in her, wanting to protect and cuddle all the furry critters of the world.
Ambrosia giggled and took another sip of her drink. She was feeling a little giddy with the alcohol. "Surely your parents must be proud of you though? Even if you didn't pursue all the things they wanted you to?" It didn't sound like she had one of those terrible childhoods with unloved and unlovable parents. Those stories were so sad.
"My parents have always been pretty supportive. Even when they found out I was a mutant, they said I was special and should treasure my gift. I guess I'm really lucky like that." For a moment, she felt meloncholy, thinking of all the stories of other mutants far less fortunate than herself.
