The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

She wanted to have every reason to be angry at him; hell, at that point, she wanted him to give her a reason to slap him and storm out. A dramatic exit sounded perfect and fitting. He had to allow her that, didn’t he? Entice it, even. That was what he was meant to do.
Only… he was starting to sway her. Yes, he was a conman, which likely meant that he was an expert at making his words sound sincere when they really weren’t, but for some reason, she found herself believing him. Could it really be true that he was wanted her? He was standing there, trying to fight for her. Perhaps she hadn’t given him enough of a chance.
God! What was she doing? She’d been down this path; let him walk all over her time and time again, and it had made her a shell of herself. It was getting harder and harder to see through all the lies when she wasn’t even sure where she stood. There was no longer that strong Natalie when she was around him; it was just confusion and a longing for more of him. She didn’t want that. She didn’t want-
Oh, who was she kidding? Of course she wanted that. She wanted him. She had put up her fight and made him profess his love and all that, and now she was just making it harder for the both of them. His words had given her a change of heart and her face softened slightly to reflect that.
”Alright,” Natalie relented, ”you’ve got your chance. Treat it well.” There was no longer the same bite in her voice, and it was clear that she was feeling differently when she looked at him. It was a different moment now. She wanted to see what else he would do with it.

With the car parked in front of the building that Natalie had pointed out, they got out of the car. To say that it was an upscale area of New York was an understatement. Even for Natalie, this place was nice. The wealthiest of the wealthy went there when they were feeling their best and intended to spend their best.
”No I haven’t been to the other side yet,” she admitted. She would be lying if she said that it hadn’t crossed her mind to travel over to the other side of the rift, but she hadn’t chosen to do so. ”You could say that I’m fairly rooted on this side. I’ll leave the travel to you.” Her life, her child, and her work were here. And, for some reason, there was another person that she thought about when she thought about travelling.
Natalie entered the restaurant with a confident walk. The hostess looked up when they entered the building and gave them a quizzical look. There was a certain kind of walk-in that they accepted, and it was clear that she was trying to decide whether or not they were those kinds of people. Normally, most people would be turned down without a reservation, but Natalie had her ways.
As she waited for Kristoph to join her, she pulled her wallet from her purse and handed the woman a business card. Jameson and Finch was a big name around the city and they had a good standing with the restaurant. ”For two, please,” she requested politely, making sure to flash a little of her company card in the process. The hostess took the card and looked it over, comparing it to the notes in her little book. Once she was satisfied with what she saw, she spoke again.
“Of course,” she nodded after a moment, giving them her first smile. “Follow me.”
She was going to be gone. Gone out of the office, and hopefully, out of his life. If all went according to plan, then she would never have to interact with him again past meetings, holidays, and dropping Norah off. Maybe she could even avoid IE meetings entirely. She did have a life, after all, and a full one at that. Specific scheduling of meetings over that time would be a great way to get out of seeing him more often.
Natalie reached her hand toward the door to open it, but Nate stepped in front of it. Seriously? Was he seriously going to pull that? After everything? No, that just wasn’t going to stand. She’d already made it clear that she was done, and she wasn’t willing to hear him out. There was very little that he could pull to make her want to stay.
”Get out of my way, Nathaniel,” she bristled. If he thought that he could just walk all over her, then he was sorely mistaken. Natalie Ross was not someone that was played with.
Still, he opened his big fat mouth and proclaimed that he didn’t want to f*** things up with her. It was a little late for that, but he said it nonetheless. She stood back on her left leg and crossed her arms over her chest as she glared at him. His words seemed sincere at least, but she was still angry. She didn’t want to hear him out, and yet her feet wouldn’t move to push him aside. Her head was telling her to go, but her heart was telling her to stay. Maybe, if he was willing to fight for her, then he wasn’t entirely bad.
”Make me stay, then,” she challenged with a sneer. If she was going to give him another chance, then he was going to have to work for it. The conman convincing the lawyer that there was still something worth saving.

She’d assumed that because Nate was having fun in other places, that he didn’t feel the same way about her. It was an easy assumption; she just wasn’t enough to keep him happy. Why else would he run into the arms of his ex-girlfriend? It all made perfect sense.
And yet, there he was, standing in her office, saying that if she had only said something, then they could have avoided everything. They could have been on the same page. He never would have seen other people. It was all on her for not saying anything, obviously. There had been nothing implied and nothing felt between the two of them. Only the words she failed to say.
Natalie gritted her teeth and rolled her eyes. She really wasn’t interested in hearing how it was all because of her. That was complete bull****. It was a two way street, and if he was going to waltz in, take her feelings, and then stop on them, she was having none of it. It was not all her fault, and he couldn’t make it out to be. She wouldn’t fall for it. Just like it had taken the both of them in the LIE all those months ago, it had taken the both of them not to communicate.
If he was supposedly in tune with his feelings all along, then he could have said something just as easily as she could have. Hiding behind the guise that she was cold and distant was a coward’s response. Sure, it was nice to hear that she wasn’t alone in feeling the connection between them, but this was not how she wanted to go. She’d already burned that bridge and it was too late for him to expect anything from her.
>>”I’m a damn idiot,”
”Yes, you are,” Natalie agreed, standing up from her desk and collecting the papers that she was working on. Her body language was beginning to show just how done with his bull**** she truly was. ”I’m not infallible, Nate, and I’m also not up for being toyed with. Now, if you’re not going to leave, then I am. Close the door on your way out.”
With that, her heels began to click as she walked toward the door.
Natalie had few regrets in her life. Her choices were her own, and she had always tried her best to stand by them. Norah, leaving Chicago, becoming a lawyer. It was all hers, and they were choices that she held firm to. Lately, though, there seemed to be more and more things that she regretted.
She regretted letting herself get so attached to Nate. It hadn’t seemed like an issue when they’d first met, but when they discovered their chemistry, she hadn’t pulled away. In fact, she’d leaned into it with extra vigour. Maybe she’d just been lonely for too long, or maybe she felt like there could be something real, but either way, it had to end. She regretted starting it, but not ending it.
He just didn’t seem to be able to get out of her life, though. Natalie understood that they would have to see each other on Haven hours and when she was allowing him to see Norah, but specifically seeking her out on his own time was too far. She didn’t want to see him, and she didn’t want to have to deal with him. She had things to do, and he was no longer on that list.
Now, he was just making things worse.
”We agreed that we wouldn’t be more than coparents,” Natalie said despite herself. She wanted nothing more than to watch him leave so she wouldn’t have to deal with any of that. ”I know that. We made it clear. I didn’t say anything, because that’s what we agreed on. I thought…”
The brunette closed her eyes and shook her head. Her own stupidity still hurt. ”I thought that we were feeling the same thing, but I was wrong. It… hurt to hear otherwise.”
She didn’t apologize, but it was still the most honest she’d ever really been with him. It was unlike her, and she didn’t meet his eyes. All in all, she hadn’t known where it had come from, and she regretted saying it, but now it was out there. It was too late. ”Please, just leave. I don’t want to talk to you right now.”
A week had passed since she’d sent Nate out. She didn’t regret doing it, either. If they had gone on any longer, things only would have gotten worse for her, and if she’d gotten any more attached, there was no telling what she would’ve done.
Still, it hurt to think about him. He was still Norah’s father, and she wouldn’t keep her from seeing him just because she couldn’t stand to look at him. He was still free to spend time with the little girl when she was working, or to take her out for events, but Natalie wanted no part of it. She did everything she could to avoid him, even with the Inner Echelon. She’d done a fairly good job of it, too, that week. She’d only seen him in passing.
She knew all the things that she was supposed to know. That they shouldn’t be together. That she had no right to go off on him like that. That they’d made an agreement. And yet, she just didn’t care. She couldn’t care. She had to face the facts; she was too in love with him to keep going like that. Either it ended with pain and anger in the short term or a thousand times more pain down the line. Her decision had been for the best.
It sucked to be anywhere near where she knew he might be, though. She was in her office in the Haven building, rereading some case files. It was easiest to be there rather than home, where she wouldn’t get any actual work done. She couldn’t exactly go to her office at her firm and read files that had nothing to do with her job, either. That left that office and that office only.
It just meant that it left her open for her worst fear: Nate walking in. That was, of course, exactly what he did.
She very nearly jumped when the door opened, and she did her very best to keep her face steely and impassive as he walked in. She was still angry from the week before. Time had done nothing to close her open wounds.
Even though she was angry, she let him say his piece while she glared at him. She said nothing in response for a minute or two, just letting her anger brim. What right did he have to come in there and tell her what to do? After he’d humiliated her like that?
”I could’ve said something? Seriously, Nate? What did you want me to say? You made it very clear that I was just another one of your women,” she hissed. Natalie shook her head and looked back at her case files as she flicked her hand toward the door. ”I have nothing to say to you.”

”And right at the next lights,” she instructed as soon as the car had pulled onto the street. She wondered if anything about driving was different between the two worlds, like it was different between countries on theirs. From the way he was driving, it didn’t seem to be the case. Was everything transferable, though? Money? Languages? That was certainly going to change the economy. Hopefully things would end up settling after a while.
>>”Seriously, thank you for taking the time out with me. This is a strange set of circumstances and… it will be good to do something normal for a change...like have a peaceful meal with good company.”
He wasn’t Nate. He looked nothing like the man, and nothing about him was even slightly similar. Maybe that was good, though. She knew that she was getting too hung up on the man that she couldn’t have, and it was becoming an issue. Maybe it was best to clean her palate a bit and do something completely out of her usual lane. Kristoph fit that bill perfectly.
He wasn’t her usual type, and he wasn’t even the kind of person that she would give a second glance. That’s why he was perfect, though. Nothing like Nate. Nothing. Maybe that way her thoughts could stop screaming about him.
”Of course,” she nodded at his comment. She couldn’t imagine that the transition had been easy on him. She wasn’t really all that interested in helping, but since she was getting something out of it too, she didn’t mind playing along. So long as he didn’t get attached, of course. ”I imagine it’s been strange to live in a different world and have your entire life revolve around work.”
The street that they’d come across was an upscale one. Natalie rarely left the part of the city meant for the more wealthy portion, but even for her, this was a place that you went for a outing. ”Just over here,” she told him, pointing to a tall section with an elite appearance.

He was throwing it back at her. Of course he was throwing it back at her. It wasn’t as if she didn’t deserve it, but in that moment, she didn’t need it. Not in the slightest. Nate was only digging himself deeper into the hole with every word. Each mention of their agreement was another heap of dirt on his grave.
She’d essentially told him how she felt, though. She’d drawn the dots in a perfect circle, meaning that his job was the simple task of connecting them. Really, she’d assumed that he would be more capable than that. Of course she didn’t dislike him. How on earth could he think that? He was the only person she’d ever opened up to, and each time she pushed him away, it was because they’d gotten too close. It was because she knew that they’d end up in the situation they were in right that moment, where she had fallen and it was just sex for him.
He’d thought maybe. That was good on him, wasn’t it? Maybe. That was just great. She let a huff out with his words, resting her hands on her waist as she stared at him. There was clearly something wrong with his brain if that was all he had deduced.
The whole thing would just be better if he left, though. They’d both made their points clear, and they’d reached an impasse. If they stopped what they were doing, then Nate could still have his fun with his girlfriends without her ever being a factor in it. She wouldn’t have to deal with any of the mess that was involved in being associated with him, and they would never have to get messy in front of Norah. Messier, anyway.
She wanted him gone.
”Leave. Now.” Each word came with weight that had come from a hardening of her spirit. She’d opened up all that she would that night, and there would be nothing else to come from her. Nothing friendly, anyway. Behind them, the oven timer went off and she walked around him to get the chicken out from the heat.

Natalie had been hiding her dislike of Nate seeing other women under the guise that she didn’t want Norah to meet them. That was partially true; she didn’t want the little girl to get attached to someone that could fill her mother’s place only to have them ripped away when Nate decided that he was done with them. Natalie would have to be the one to pick of the pieces as always. Yes, that was an important thing to keep in mind.
That wasn’t really what got her so angry, though. Anyone with half a brain and a step away from the situation could see exactly what she was feeling. Somewhere along the line, she’d fooled herself into thinking that they could actually be something, and maybe he could love her. Now, her stupidity was coming crashing down around her, and she wasn’t going to go down with at least a little bit of a fight.
”Oh, right, we laid out the rules, didn’t we? Yes, how could I possibly forget?” she spat, managing to keep her voice low despite her rage. ”That’s right, the rules that we set up so that you could have your fun and still see whoever you wanted as well. Men will be men, right?”
She turned and ran her hands through her dark hair, her hands falling to her sides as she let out a noise of frustration. She was just taking shots at that point. He was completely in the right; she had no claim, and they had set up the rules together. They had agreed that it was for the best at the time, but she had really thought that they were getting somewhere. Sure, she hadn’t been celibate, but nothing she had done had involved the ex that she had considered marrying or introducing Norah to someone else. He was on a completely different level.
He essentially confirmed that they were sleeping together, too. There was no sense of shame in his voice. No understanding toward her or her feelings. Who else was he sleeping with as well? How many others filled his quota? Was he ever sated?
She spun around suddenly, her eyes a little more sad than before. Her finger was pointed at the man that was driving her absolutely insane. ”I swear to god, I’ll never understand how you can’t see it, Nate. Do you really think that I don’t like you?” Her tone was simply sad by that point. She didn’t fill in the rest of the details. If he cared at all, he could figure that out on his own. If not, then they would just go back to being coparents. She couldn’t deal with anything else.
”I think you should go,” she stated before he could say anything else.

Natalie was fully expecting some sort of tale about how Kristoph had met his double and had become best friends with the identical ginger giant. It seemed strange to assume that people could be entirely different in another life, especially when they were like Kristoph. Surely some things carried over.
She did, however, raise an eyebrow when he told her about visiting his female doppelganger’s gravesite. It was a sad tale, really. You find your other self and then find out that they were not only completely different than you, but they had passed on. They were no longer making a mark or a difference on their world. Natalie didn’t care to find out if that was the case for her other self. She’d worked too hard for what she had and rested too much on her decisions to find out that there could have been another outcome.
”My condolences,” she said respectfully, unsure of what else to say in that circumstance. She wondered silently whether it had rocked him at all to see his other self six feet under. They walked toward a sleek black car, which was far nicer than she assumed that he would be driving, and stopped in front of it. Even though it was likely a rental, she was still glad that they wouldn’t be driving around New York in an ugly vehicle that would dirty her very expensive outfit.
She opened the passenger door and lowered herself inside as she thought through the question he bounced back to her. It likely wouldn’t be that hard for her to track down her ‘other’ if she wanted to, especially if she had SUPER’s help, but after hearing everything about bad experiences, she knew now more than ever that she had no desire to meet them.
”I did a quick search early on, and there were none of the flags that I would have raised in that universe, which means that they didn’t follow the same track that I did,” Natalie explained. ”I don’t want a glimpse into that life.”
She buckled herself into the seat and then pointed toward the exit from the parking garage. ”Exit to the left there.”

It was absurd. It was absurd to think that for once in her life, something could just fall into place. Nothing had ever fallen into place for Natalie. Everything she had, she’d had to work for and manipulate to have. There was nothing that would actually work for her, and she had to come to terms with that fact. Maybe that was why no romantic relationship had ever worked for her; she couldn’t make someone love her.
She couldn’t make Nate love her. She couldn’t make him want her, or want to spend time with just her without having someone else on the side. Of course it had come to this, her six year old declaring just where her father stood. It was so painfully obvious. Why couldn’t she have seen it before? It was always about him. What he could get out of the situation, wasn’t it? He was there for Norah, and he’d been using Natalie to get a little something on the side. God, he was just like every other man in the world.
There was nothing good about what they had. It was clearly toxic and she was deluding herself into thinking that there was something between them. She was deluding herself into thinking that he might want her; they might have been able to build something together. How could she have ever thought that? She prided herself on being strong and self-sufficient, and yet she had just let herself be played.
Sure, they weren’t exclusive. Technically, they weren’t anything. And yet, they were acting like they were. They would spend nights together and talk to each other like they were something more. She had opened up to him and treated him as if he would stay, and yet now she knew exactly what he was doing. To him, she was just another lay in an easier situation than most. Did she really look that lonely? Was she such an easy target?
”Norah, can you go to your room, please? Your father and I need to have a chat,” she told the little girl, having cleared her throat before talking. Her voice was at an even pace, letting nothing through.
”But I want to stay!”
”Norah.” Shuffling of feet sounded through the apartment told them that the little girl had listened to the instructions. Following a door slam, Natalie turned around in a flash of anger. Her eyes locked on Nate’s and narrowed as she bore him down. She was f***ing done with being played.
”Would it f***ing kill you to keep it in your pants?” she hissed, her voice finally displaying something. It was very unlike Natalie to lose her temper in that manner. She very nearly didn’t look like herself, and her powers were doing strange things. Normally, she was able to keep a lid on all of it - her emotions, her powers, all of it. Not in that moment, though. The ground around Nate appeared to shift and move, as if she wanted the earth to swallow him whole.

Who in their lifetime would have imagined that they would be privy to seeing two universes collide? Certainly not Natalie. Perhaps her powers had taught her exactly what in the universe was controllable, but she had always been a firm believer in grounding herself in real life. The real world. A collision of universes did not sound like real life, and yet somehow there they were, talking as if it wasn’t the strangest thing in the world to be from two different realities.
There were differences between the two, clearly. For one, their meeting would not have happened if SUPER had existed on that side of the barrier. Natalie hadn’t really cared enough to bother inspecting what the differences were exactly until that point, and even then, it was more of a formality. Small talk. Switching sides had never been a thought or a question for her; this was her home, and she had built her life there.
She had to admire Kristoph, though. He was switching worlds (for the time being) because his company had asked him to. That was commitment. Sure, he didn’t seem like the type to have roots on the other side of the rift, but even still. There was something to be said about a person that could leave behind everything familiar for an entirely new place.
They did have their similarities, though, like the fact that they could communicate about nearly the same things and understand each other perfectly. It was just the minor differences that seemed to be the things that people noticed. Otherwise, things were nearly the same.
She nodded along to the differences that he noted, trying to imagine how different her life might have been if she’d grown up over there, hiding from SUPER. She was good at hiding, but that was a whole separate playing field. If she hadn’t gotten the training that she had as a child, things might have been different for her. She might not have had Norah. That was a scary thought.
There was still one more question that she had about the two worlds when they stepped out of the elevator and into the parking garage. ”And your… other self? On this side? Have you met them?” she asked him. She would be lying if she said that she hadn’t looked into her other self, but after turning up nothing promising, she’d laid the thought to rest. If they weren’t as accomplished as she was, were they even worth meeting?
