The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

From the weak sound of Raina's voice, Luke knew that he had better keep his sonar turned off. It was starting to give him a headache but with the nasty side effect of making people more uncomfortable than they already were, it was better to suffer the headache.
"I... have to get back to the mansion. I'm greeting some new students, I can't really pass it on. I'll stay til we get her set up."
Luke knew from the position of her voice that she had to be up against the counter but there was something else... something about her voice that didn't sound quite right. Raina was concerned or worried about something and if he had to venture a guess it had to do with something other than Victoria's accident.
Right then the kettle began to whistle. For a few more moments Luke remained silent as he poured the hot water into three cups with tea bags and then laced the pot onto one of the cool burners. Turning, he stepped carefully over to where he had heard Raina while he left the tea behind to steep. Reaching out tentatively he placed a hand on either of her shoulders and carefully pulled her into a hug.
"It'll be fine Raina. You did a good job with Victoria. I don't know anyone that could have helped her more." Luke's voice was soft as he slowly lifted his left hand and began to stroke Raina's hair. He was trying to be comforting and draw her out so that she could say what was bothering her. "Now... you need to relax too. Some thing's wrong but if you don't want to tell me, you don't have to. Just know that I'm here whenever you need me."
It was a sappy thing to say but it was also, honestly how Luke felt. He was there if Raina needed him and he would listen whenever she was ready to talk.

He hadn't protested against her suggestion that Victoria stay the night and that gave Raina a bigger pain in her stomach and she suddenly felt a lot weaker. Her blood rushed from her face and she would have lost her footing had Luke not pulled her into a hug.
Of course, she was the one who had the idea but there was a large nagging part of her that wished he would of protested. He was her boyfriend and she had to trust him but right now she didn't feel any of that... she was simply convincing herself. Afterall... she'd never been in a real relationship before... what was she to judge it against? When he asked what was wrong she didn't answer. How could she possibly explain if he didn't already know? It would never make sense.
For one of the first moments in her life she wished Luke could read her thoughts. Then she wouldn't have to lower herself to say them. But Raina was strong. She wasn't going to be petty about this even if it all did hurt her in a twisted sort of way. Victoria was injured, embaressed, and traumatized. Raina's ego was simply bruised. She'd live right?... then why'd it hurt so bad.
She wanted to burry her face in Luke and cry over it all but it just would confuse him and probably her so she pulled away and straightened up clearing her throat. "Ok. I'll take this tea into Victoria. I'm going to lend her your robe too. You wait in the guest bedroom until she's wrapped up... I might need help moving her." she explained being assertive again.
She took the tea he prepared with a plastered on smile even though she knew he couldn't see it and trotted back over the the guest bathroom. She wrapped on the door. "Victoria I'm coming in." when she entered the curtain was still drawn and she lightly set the cup of tea on the sink and the folded robe on the closed toilet seat. "I brought you some tea, and I put a folded up robe here. I've got some extra clothes but I think getting dressed right now will hurt more than it's worth. Im going to go back out and Luke and I will wait outside the door. We think it's best if you stay here tonight. Get some sleep and keep warm where someone can keep an eye on you. "
She didn't wait for Victoria's reply because she suspected there wouldn't be much of one unless she needed help so she quickly turned and headed back out the door and stood waiting outside of it for her and Luke. She wondered what Victoria would think of staying here. She wondered if she'd be happy with the decision herself come tomorrow.
Victoria wasn't quite sure how much time had passed when Raina returned to the bathroom with the tea and robe. The water was still warm so it couldn't have been that long.
"Thank you Raina." Victoria murmured.
It took her a couple of attempts to get out of the bath. The first time she go only a little way out of the water before slipping back in. It didn't make much of a splash and Victoria hoped that the sound hadn't carried out of the bathroom. Having compensated for her weakness Victoria's second attempt was more successful and she managed to get to her feet. She felt stiff and sore. Everything ached and it took her a bit of effort to get the sodden jacket off and hung up so that it would drip into the bath rather than all over the floor.
Victoria felt like an old woman as she stepped stiffly out of the bath. The towel was rough against her sensitised skin and it took all her will power to dry herself properly before donning the robe. It was much too big for her; her arms were not long enough to reach the ends of the sleeves and the bottom trailed on the floor. Victoria managed to get the belt tied and then shuffled out of the bathroom.
Even Victoria could sense the tension and it didn't take a rocket scientist to work out why. Victoria was childish and romantic and as a consequence of being an only child a little self-centred and she wanted Luke to be her boyfriend. It didn't seem fair. Victoria was, however, kind and she didn't want to come between Luke and Raina, however much it hurt.
"I think I should go home." She said quietly. "I will be OK."
What she really wanted to do was go home and have a good cry where no one would disturb her.

While part of Luke was surprised at how quickly she left his presence to return to the bathroom, another part of him was expecting something like that. Raina was upset but he just couldn't come to a good reason for her to be upset.
"Is she really that embarrassed about losing control in front of Victoria?"
Waiting patiently in the kitchen, Luke was ready to spring forward as soon as Raina walked out of the bathroom. Moving forward quickly the blind man purposely invaded he space just a little, his face an expression of obvious concern.
"Raina... come on... something's bothering you." He murmured, trying to cajole the young woman into divulging her secrets, "Talk to me."
***
There wasn't nearly enough time for Raina to explain the situation completely, even if she wanted to, before Victoria made her way out of the bathroom. Luke had finally reactivated his sonar, although in just a small arc, so he immediately saw the young woman when she came out.
"Are you feeling any better Victoria?" Luke asked quietly as he stepped back from Raina, giving his girlfriend back her personal space.
"I think I should go home. I will be OK." Victoria's voice was quiet with just a touch of... sadness or regret in her voice. What was it with women getting upset at this whole situation? They had both been embarrassed but, come on... could they all just be friends and get over their own pride?
"Are you sure you feel up for that Victoria? I'd be glad to take you home, but you're welcome to stay here if you need to." Luke spoke up again, "But if you do want to go home I'm gonna give a call to Ms. Williamson. I'm sure she'd be more than happy to check in on your more comfortable at home."
Luke wasn't completely sure that Ms. Williamson would be happy to check in on Victoria, but even if she wasn't, she still would. There was still that whole situation with renters fraud that the landlady would be trying to keep quiet.

"Luke... Victoria..." started Raina actually glad for once that Victoria had interrupted because she really didn't want to face Luke. "don't be crazy. Victoria you need to be somewhere with someone to check on you incase you need to go to the hospital. Sometimes with this kinda thing feaver sets on and you're alright now but that might change. You don't want to be alone if that happens. It can cause hallucinations and bad dreams." saying it all out loud Raina suddenly felt a lot better about her suggestion that Victoria stay. There really was good practical reason for her to stay here it wasn't just Raina raising the white flag.
"I think you'll regret it if you go home. Luke wont bother you any will you Luke?" she turned to him to give him what was intended to be a playful squeeze but came off pretty forced. "when you can get dressed without it hurting and without falling over... then I'd say it's a good time to leave." she crossed her arms against herself like a mom giving an order. She did have instincts like that after dealing with kids at the mansion.
Victoria did feel weak, shaky and sore. If she went home she would have to fend for herself, which was not appealing but she didn't want to impose on Luke's generous nature and it didn't seem like she could win with Raina. Victoria was aware that as Luke's girlfriend Raina would not be happy with her there with Luke but in her other capacity she would not be happy with Victoria spending the rest of the day and the night by herself.
A single tear had trickled down Victoria's face when she had admitted to herself that Raina was Luke's girlfriend. It was one thing to feel that she was unworthy and the aim to high; it was quite another to have it confirmed. That added another complication. Staying the night would be a constant reminder to her that Luke was unattainable and Victoria was not sure she could bear that.
"Candice will look in on me. And if I do feel unwell and need help I can phone." It was said in a tired voice without much conviction, not because she didn't believe it but because everything seemed too much effort at the moment.
Victoria wasn't aware of the more insidious effects of hypothermia, the sapping of will that causes the sufferer to effectively give up thereby exacerbating the situation. She was warmer than she had been but her body temperature was still not up to normal and it wouldn't take much for it to drop again.
The tea sat forgotten on the sink.Even if Victoria had remembered it, going back into the bathroom would have seemed like too much effort.

Luke had to admit that at first he had been a little unsure about having Victoria stay at his place but, as he watched the young woman and realized just how weak she really was, he accepted that this was going to be the best thing for her.
"I think Raina's right Victoria." Luke spoke up firmly, "Let's see about getting you stretched out on the couch with some blankets while I get some soup fixed up for you to eat while you drink your tea."
Moving over to Raina, Luke slipped his arm around her and gave her a quick squeeze before moving over to help Victoria walk over to the couch. "Raina... can you at least stick around to eat with us?" Luke said with a smile as he slipped an arm around Victoria, taking her weight onto his arm as he helped her move over to the couch. He knew that as weak as she was there would be no chance of her protesting but he also didn't want to even give her a chance to try. "I really don't want to give you up already." Luke continued, his words and much of his attention still focused on Raina.

Raina wasn't sure how to feel about how everything was transpiring now. Luke had went on her initial statement about Victoria staying and practically ignored her decision to leave. Raina would have been relieved if Victoria went home to an extent... she'd feel guilty and worry the rest. Luke also ignore her attempt to leave as well. Suddenly she didn't feel so much in control. Suddenly Luke was the one in control and Raina could only pray it didn't start raining so she could still leave here at some point.
She gave a defeated sigh. She was starving too and thought Luke would be as well. "Why don't we make enough for three... and maybe some grilled cheese." she gave him a lopsided smile as he gave her a squeeze and went on his way. It didn't occur to her how this would look to Victoria... then it didn't occur to her that Victoria had figured out she was his girlfriend.
She turned on her heels to face Victoria. "You're still trembling and I think You haven't got a say in this anymore." she walked over to Victoria to lead her to the couch. "At least sit and eat for a while and we'll take things from there." she could appreciate wanting to go home. Afterall that's what she wanted to do.
Perhaps it had been the example set by her parents that had given Victoria the insight into Raina's relationship with Luke. There had been a similar something, Victoria didn't know how to describe it, between them, even after some thirty years of marriage.
Victoria didn't have the strength to resist and instead smiled weakly as she was guided to the couch by Raina. She remembered her tea but by the they were well past the bathroom and she didn't have the energy to return for it. Victoria sat down and then lifted her legs up to assume a semi-reclined position. She was suddenly made acutely aware that the robe was all she wore when the movement caused one leg to be exposed almost completely. A little bit of colour rose to her cheeks as she hurriedly rearranged the robe to cover her leg again while trying to ensure the top of it didn't fall open. It was silly, in her own estimation, Luke relying on sonar and at best being able to determine, perhaps, that she was naked but no more, and Raina being a woman. But then, Raina wasn't just a woman, she was both Luke's girlfriend and also the person who could help Victoria get some control over her mutation. Victoria didn't want to give Raina any reason to feel more uncomfortable about her staying in Luke's apartment overnight.
"Luke... Raina.... I'm sorry I ruined your day." Victoria apologised, a small part of it to distract attention away from the other matters that were causing discomfort but the apology was very genuine nonetheless. That led to another matter that had been niggling away at the back of her mind.
"What happened? One moment I was running along the dock and the next I was falling toward the water."

"You didn't ruin anything Victoria." Luke called back in response to her statement as he made his way into the kitchen to see about getting together some soup. Normally he cooked his soups from scratch but for emergencies, or when he was just feeling lazy, he did keep a few cans of soup around. Thankfully they were all one type so he could dump several cans together to make sure there was enough for all three of them.
"Grilled cheese and minestrone soup will be coming out in a minute but Raina will have to tell you what happened. I know you... fell apart as you describe it, but my sonar was extended enough to see exactly what happened."
As he let the two women chat, Luke set about pulling butter, a loaf of bread, and blocks of yellow sharp cheddar, white cheddar, and swiss cheeses. With a man that liked to cook, there was no such thing as just a simple grilled cheese.
After dumping three cans of minestrone soup into a pot on the stove, Luke set a frying pan on a different burner, making sure to keep it on low heat. He wanted to melt the cheese while crisping the bread without actually burning the outside of it. While it wasn't necessarily easy, it was really difficult either. Even though he was now busy cooking, Luke still listened carefully, doing his best to keep up with the conversation that was now going on in the other room.

"You didn't ruin anything Victoria." said Raina at the exact moment that Luke did. She bit her lip and let him finished looking a little embaressed. "Like I said earlier, I got us rolling when I jumped over board. It was karma or something."
She sat next to Victoria and passed her a blanket. She tried to recall everything that happened. "It was strange." she admitted. "I'd never seen anything like that. It was like you fractaled or something. This ball was coming right for you and then you we're there anymore. I thought when you materialized above the water you were going to die from the impact. It was one of the scariest moments of my life." it really was one of the scariest moments of her life. That was no lie. "But then you did it again and ended up closer to the water." her eyes furrowed together. "You're lucky you were just wet and cold and didn't break a limb."
she looked over at the woman. "I was ready to dive in after you but you were much closer the second time. I'm sorry. If I did we probably could have gotten you out faster." she felt a little selfish now.. she really could have dove in and gotten Victoria out faster. "we shouldn't dwell on this though. You're alright and that's all that matters. Once we get things going for you this shouldnt be a problem anymore!" she forced a smile.
Victoria smiled sadly when both Luke and Raina protested that she hadn't ruined the day. They had intended to climb up the Statue of Liberty and they hadn't even got off the dock. Victoria wasn't prepared to argue the point nor even suggest they agree to disagree if for no other reason than it seemed too much effort.
Raina's description of what had happened gave Victoria pause for thought. She knew, from repeated experience that a loud noise or even a relatively quiet but sudden noise if she were already stressed caused her to disintegrate.
"I didn't know I could do that." Victoria said finally having used the time to arrange the blanket to think things through a little. She wasn't a rocket scientist but neither was she short of brain cell. It was difficult to think though with the chill and the ache.
"I never saw a ball, or at least not that I remember. I vaguely remember falling but if what you say is correct, I didn't have time to become properly aware before hitting the water."
There were times when Victoria wished she was as thick as two short planks and this became one of them. She had been ill the night her parents had been run down and killed. Victoria had attributed her survival to that but if Raina's observation of today's events were accurate and if her analysis was correct she would have survived anyway. That would have been even worse; to have survived the impact of the vehicle and reassembled to find her parents dead.
It had not been an uncommon occurrence for Victoria to wish that she had been with her parents that fateful night. It had not been uncommon for her to go to sleep hoping that she wouldn't wake. There had even been occasions when she had woken, bitterly disappointed to have done so. It had abated since meeting Tris and Luke but now those feelings which led to those thoughts were back with a vengeance.
Despite her best efforts, weakened by her current physical state and the irrational fear that Luke and Raina would want to have nothing more to do with her, the tears began again, silent streams coursing down her cheeks.

Not having his sonar extended all the way into the living room, Luke had no idea that the emotions of the day had finally overwhelmed Victoria. All he knew was that the conversation was progressing and hopefully would be providing Raina with all the information she needed in order to help the younger woman.
Beginning to hum quietly to himself as he worked, the blind man set about slicing off a few slices from each of the three blocks of cheese he had selected. Grabbing two slices of bread he placed the cheese between them and then buttered the outside of the bread before placing it carefully in the frying pan. The sound of sizzling butter was instantaneous and in a few moments the scent of minestrone was combining with the scent of toasting bread and melting cheese.
"You two ladies have your choice... sharp yellow cheddar, white cheddar, swiss, or a combination of any of the three for your grilled cheese." Luke called out into the living room, still oblivious to everything going on, "Any preference?"

ooc: Sorry for the delay, Lady and Gent!
IC: Raina frowned when she saw the tears start to pour down Victoria's face but for the young woman's pride she was determined not to draw too much attention to it. Victoria had had a hard enough day already. She reached beside herself where an end table was and found a box of kleenex and discretley passed it to Victoria with a smile. "It's only natural to be upset in situations like this..." started Raina "especially when you get used to your mutation acting in a way that you just don't expect. I still think regular training sessions would seriously help with all these surprises. But we'll focus on you getting better and well rested for now." she was even more sure now than she was to begin with that Victoria needed some serious training but she wouldn't push the matter any furthur. "Maybe when Luke and I get back I can take you on a tour of the mansion." she said thinking about their trip to Paris but rather thinking out loud and not giving any thought to the fact Victoria would then know they were going away together.
Currently she was thinking of how sad Victoria must be and how she could change that/ She knew having her friends around her at the mansion was one of the driving forces behind her happiness and stability and hoped it would become one for Victoria.
"Ummm I didn't know there were so many kinds of cheeses..." started Raina making a bit of a face. "Can I have... uh... the normal orange kind?" she laughed a bit at her own ignorance and Luke's impecable timing.
"....especially when you get used to your mutation acting in a way that you just don't expect. "
"That's not it." Victoria replied, her tone bleak, between sniffles but she didn't elaborate further.
"Maybe when Luke and I get back I can take you on a tour of the mansion."
Victoria felt like she had been punched in the gut and for a moment it flicked across her face. If it hadn't been for the smells and Luke's timely intervention she might have broken down again.
"Any preference?" Luke's voice floated through from the kitchen.
Victoria had been about to say, "whatever", being a teenager and unhappy, but she stopped the comment before she had done more than open her mouth. Perhaps it was the growl of hunger from her stomach caused by the smells that were wafting through from the kitchen or perhaps it was a growing maturity that caused her to interrupt herself. Or it may have been Raina being faster on the uptake. Or a bit of all three.
Victoria had not had such a choice before. They had always gone for whatever had been on special.
"Can I be cheeky and have a a combination of all three, please?" Victoria asked, perking up a little while still managing to be annoyed with herself.
