The X-men run missions and work together with the NYPD, striving to maintain a peaceful balance between humans and mutants. When it comes to a fight, they won't back down from protecting those who need their help.
Haven presents itself as a humanitarian organization for activists, leaders, and high society, yet mutants are the secret leaders working to protect and serve their kind. Behind the scenes they bring their goals into reality.
From the time when mutants became known to the world, SUPER was founded as a black-ops division of the CIA in an attempt to classify, observe, and learn more about this new and rising threat.
The Syndicate works to help bring mutantkind to the forefront of the world. They work from the shadows, a beacon of hope for mutants, but a bane to mankind. With their guiding hand, humanity will finally find extinction.
Since the existence of mutants was first revealed in the nineties, the world has become a changed place. Whether they're genetic misfits or the next stage in humanity's evolution, there's no denying their growing numbers, especially in hubs like New York City. The NYPD has a division devoted to mutant related crimes. Super-powered vigilantes help to maintain the peace. Those who style themselves as Homo Superior work to tear society apart for rebuilding in their own image.

It was dark. It was warm. It was soft. Tarin Brooks blinked his eyes open to the disorientation that always occurs after a person sleeps like the dead for an indeterminable amount of time. He felt good, if a little sore, but that didn’t answer the most pressing question. The ceiling was very different from the ceiling at the shop, but the shop was definitely where he’d fallen asleep last night.
Until he’d woken up in the park.
Holding a knife over the body of the woman he’d fallen asleep next to in the shop.
Memories flooded back along with a healthy dose of revulsion and utter horror at the realization of where he was.
Up Tarin sat, bolt straight in the bed that belonged to the ex wife of the Tarin who had existed on this side of the rift. The Tarin who had put her through enough that she knew exactly how to handle what had happened last night down to clinical precision. The woman who had…oh god…so many things had happened last night that he hadn’t even thought of in the miasma of utter horror that had transpired.
Somehow he’d ended up back here, she’d said she wouldn’t sleep so he could have her room.
Oh god.
There was a window. As quietly as possible, Tarin swung his legs from the bed and stood experimentally. No dizziness, no nausea, he was maybe a bit tired still in that drained way a person felt after extreme trauma…but he could get around. Padding on silent feet to the window he noted that there was, in fact, a fire escape.
Would it be better if he just grabbed his stuff….oh god, she’d packed a bag, he could see it in the corner…and left?
He could go to the island, with the way she’d reacted to him staying there when they’d first met all those years ago chances were she wouldn’t follow him there. Surely it would be okay for a while. No. That was no way to repay someone for the completely baffling amount of kindness that Lee had shown him. If he was really going to try to get through this, to….continue, he was going to have to face what he’d done and how he’d managed to survive.
There wasn’t a mirror in the room, but running a hand through his hair confirmed to Tarin that it was pretty much standing on end. A hand over his face confirmed more than a little stubble, and the state of his clothing had been better. Then again Lee had taken the liberty of changing his clothes when he’d been unconscious so with no little mortification he decided that he was probably fine as he was.
It didn’t take long to stuff his feet into the shoes he’d left by the bed and gather the bag that Lee had packed and to the door of the room Tarin went, hand sitting on the door knob for a solid 30 seconds before he took a deep breath and pulled it open.
The layout of the apartment was a bit fuzzy, but he was sure the way to the common area was not down the hallway filled with doors. No, it was to the left, and as he slowly moved around the corner to see Lee seated on the couch working on what seemed to be paperwork.
There she went again. Acting like any of this was normal.
“Uh…hi…good morning..” He said with an awkward little wave.
”Uh…thanks for last night, for everything…I’ll figure out some way to pay you back. I’m gonna get going. Lots of stuff to do…but yeah, thanks.”

It had been another long night, but Lee was used to that. What she wasn’t used to was the fact that the Tarin Brooks who had come from the other side of the rift years ago, who had been working in the shop since then, was currently asleep in her bed. And it was rather awkward to think about it like that.
It had seemed better than Kevin’s room, though.
As had always happened after merges, Lee had had a lot of time to think. And one of the things that she had realized was that she just could not think of him as ‘Tarin’. About the closest she could manage was to think of him as ‘Tarin from the other side of the rift’ or ‘the other Tarin’. And considering how much more interaction they were going to end up having, Lee needed to be able to call him something.
At least trying to figure that out took a good chunk of the night.
Finally, morning arrived and Lee set about making coffee. Not because she needed the coffee, she still had far too much energy to sleep. No, she made coffee because that was just what she did in the morning. Then she sat down on the couch with a mug and got back to the paperwork she’d been working on a couple days prior when everything had happened.
And because he had been quiet, and she still hadn’t turned her siphoning back on in an attempt to be able to sleep that bit sooner, Lee jumped when she heard his voice coming from the direction of the bedrooms.
“Morning,” she replied with a small smile. “Did you sleep ok?”
With a quick glance at her mug, Lee set the paperwork aside and got up to grab more coffee. So as he spoke again, she was coming up to where he was standing. With the bag she’d packed for him over his shoulder. She frowned slightly, her head tilting. “You don’t need to pay me back,” she told him softly, the crease now formed between her brows. “Though other than canceling tomorrow’s appointments, I wouldn’t have thought you had that much to do right away. I would have done that for you already, but I didn’t see an appointment book in the shop.
“But if you do have that much to do,” Lee continued, finishing her walk into the kitchen. “I can always put the coffees into travel mugs.”

Tarin winced a bit, mildly sheepish that he’d managed to startle Lee with his abrupt greeting. The woman asked if he’d slept okay and he couldn’t help but shrug a bit and reply softly, “I honestly don’t know when I’ve slept better…which seems like a very odd thing to say all things considered.”
She set her paperwork aside and rose and Tarin found himself frowning back at her frown as she tilted her head, his eyebrows raising a bit as she pointed out that he shouldn’t have too much to do in the shop on a Sunday.
He was never going to get used to an almost-stranger knowing him so well. Tarin was also never going to get used to the fact that there was another him out there that ran the shop the same way and didn’t take appointments on Sundays. Apparently it was time to drop pretenses because Lee mentioned to-go cups for their coffees.
“Fine. I don’t actually have anything to do, but I figured it was the best way to leave without climbing down the fire escape. Anyway, I keep all my appointments on my phone and I didn’t see it in the bag.” he said candidly.
“You don’t need to go with me.” Tarin said, hands gripping the strap of the bag where it crossed over his chest. He could smell the coffee now, and boy did it smell good, “I could….maybe use a cup of coffee…though.” he was also going to have to stop and grab something to eat. It had been a minute.

Lee didn’t say anything regarding his sleep the previous night. Tarin had always said that he’d slept more peacefully any time he was tired as a result of her powers.
But she was already pulling two travel mugs out of the cupboard when he started speaking again, and she just looked over her shoulder with a raised eyebrow that said “really?!?” To the fire escape comment.
“I have nothing to do today,” she replied as she started digging through the cupboard for sugar. “Kevin's out of town for at least another day.”
Then her voice dropped as she found the sugar and put a spoon of it in one of the mugs. “But you probably shouldn't go to the shop by yourself…”
She avoided looking at him as she said that, then moved to the fridge. “I hope milk is ok. I don't have any cream.” After getting the ok for the milk, it only took a minute for her to walk over with the two mugs, passing one over. “Here you are, TJ,” she said, then grabbed her purse and keys. “I'm all set if you're ready.”

The thought of going to the shop alone was daunting, but there wasn’t really a whole lot to do about it. The shop was where he worked and ultimately where he lived. Funds weren’t exactly nonexistent, but this was New York City and it wasn’t like he could just pick up and move because he wanted to do so.
It looked like he was going to have company because for some reason he didn’t think he could tell Lee no. In the short time they’d really known each other she’d done too much. She’d have to back off soon anyway because her kid would be coming home. There was no way she could babysit him while trying to deal with an actual child of her own.
Milk was fine, Tarin honestly usually used the cheap creamer in his own coffee at home so he wasn’t going to complain about real milk in place of cream.
A few moments later, Lee returned and offered him a cup, and called him TJ. He frowned again, just a little.
It wasn’t that he particularly minded the name, and as he’d said before, there were very few things he wouldn’t answer from Lee at this point..but he sighed a bit and nodded, taking a sip of the coffee.

Keys and coffee cup in hand, Lee made her way to the door. But she hadn't missed the frown. She waited until after she locked up and they were heading toward the elevator so they wouldn't have to look at each other if he didn't want to as she said this.
“Sorry” she finally said, her voice only a little above a whisper. “It's just… I know you are, but it's hard for me to think of you as Tarin…if there's something else you'd rather I call you, I can do that.”
And they'd reached the elevator. Pressing the button, Lee glanced at him out of the corner of her eye.

They approached the elevator and Lee spoke, acknowledging his reaction to her calling him by his initials. In the grand scheme of things right now, it was such a small thing, Tarin couldn’t even figure out why it mattered to him in the first place.
“It doesn’t matter.” he said finally with a casual shrug, “I’m not him.” There wasn’t really anything else to say about it.
The elevator arrived and the ride down passed in silence comfortable enough that it didn’t feel weird.
Tarin had admittedly not paid much attention on the taxi ride over, but he knew that the shop wasn’t terribly far. It did bring them within close proximity to the park. Just seeing the paths and the trees made Tarin feel cold and he was suddenly glad that he wasn’t going to have to do this alone.
“How’s your head?” he said quietly, but loud enough for Lee to hear over the ambient noise of traffic and people out and about on a Sunday morning. “Your arm?”
It should have been the first thing he’d asked this morning, but he’d been so off balance and it didn’t seem like that was going to get any better.

Lee tried to keep them as far from Central Park as she could, but with where both her apartment and the shop were located, they really couldn't stay that far from it. Glancing over at TJ occasionally as they walked she saw that he was doing fairly well so far, all things considered.
And he was the first one to break the silence outside, asking how she was doing. She took a sip of coffee as she thought about how much to say.
“Definitely sore,” she admitted. “And still a bit of headache. How about you?”
She was not about to tell him about the bruising on her arm and shoulders.

Lee was sore and still had a headache. Tarin frowned as he looked down at her as they walked. Nothing was visible through her hair, but he’d be willing to bet she had a hell of a goose egg. He didn’t know what he’d have done, but Tarin was suddenly angry with himself for not doing more to help when they’d gotten to her apartment. It was a foolish thought, he’d barely been able to help himself. Somehow, mentally berating himself over that seemed preferable to thinking about how close they were to the park.
It didn’t take long to cross the distance to the shop though, and when they got there, Tarin realized he didn’t have his keys and that they weren’t in his pockets now or in the bag he’d grabbed at Lee’s place. Tarin tugged on the door and found it locked tight, he could remember Lee fumbling with a key after he’d tried to walk into traffic when she’d brought him back to the shop though. As it were, there were a lot more cars this morning.
He was still looking at all those cars when Lee produced what had to be the same key from the other night and let them inside.
The antiseptic smell of bleach hit Tarin first, then the broken chair on the floor.
He took a deep, shaky breath and let it out slowly.
“Um…make yourself at home, I guess?” he said, clearing his throat as his voice came out rough. “I’m going to grab my phone and take a quick shower if that’s alright…”
Yeah, it was a bit of a weird thing to say, and probably an even weirder thing to do, but he needed to get away.
“Do you need anything? Painkiller of choice? I’ve got some frozen corn in the freezer?”

Glancing over after she had told him how she was feeling this morning, she saw his frown. And definitely noticed that he hadn’t answered her question. She wasn’t about to push, though. She’d just watch him. He likely wouldn’t have been that honest about it.
It didn't take long for them to get to the shop and once again, without really thinking about it, Lee pulled her keys out and unlocked the door.
And watched for his reaction once inside as she locked the door behind them.
“Um…make yourself at home, I guess? I’m going to grab my phone and take a quick shower if that’s alright…”
Lee nodded, though she continued to keep an eye on TJ as she moved over to the counter and set her purse down. “Go ahead,” she said.
Then he was offering her things to help with her head and she gave a slight smile. “Thanks. I took a painkiller not long before you got up though.”
At that point, Lee tried to stay out of his way as he got ready for a shower. Once he closed the door, she went to the kitchen and grabbed another garbage bag. Taking a deep breath, she looked around the back of the shop, then started with cleaning up the mess that used to be a chair.

With fresh assurances that Lee didn’t need anything it was a quick enough matter to head to the living space and Tarin dropped his bag on the bed as he grabbed new clothes and worked on putting the ones from the bag away. Again, it was simply weird how Lee had known what kinds of clothes to grab for him to wear. Almost as weird as the fact that she continued to do such things while refusing to call him by his name. Why was that bothering him so much?
Adequately equipped with a fresh change of clothes, Tarin made his way to the bathroom. Going through the motions of showering helped soothe his raw nerves and sore muscles a bit and Tarin soon found himself standing in front of the sink with a towel wrapped around his waist. Reaching out, he swiped the steam from the mirror and cringed a bit at the yellowing bruise spread across his shoulder. No wonder it was sore. He stood there for a moment, looking at himself, making eye contact and trying to decide what was next.
The spirits had slowly been creeping back since he’d woke that morning and he could feel them gathering around the shop as he shaved and dressed. It had been odd that they’d kept their distance so much in the first place and Tarin wondered if that had been a result of his mental state or what had happened. It bore pondering but he hoped it wasn’t a question he’d have to answer any time soon.
A few minutes later saw him emerging into the shop proper, hair still wet, clad in a clean pair of jeans, a t-shirt, and a zip up hoodie bearing the logo from one of the local teams. Lee had clearly been cleaning. Again.
“Do you ever stop?” he asked, making his way towards the kitchenette as his stomach growled. How long had it been since he’d eaten?
A quick rummage later, and Tarin had produced some bagels that had gotten him an almost murderous glare even as he’d bought them. Apparently it was sacrilege to purchase mass produced bagels in New York City. There were also some eggs in the fridge…yes it felt weird to cook here, but what else was he supposed to do?
“Want some? I don’t know how you like your eggs…and I’m not a great cook, but I can try? I was gonna scramble mine.”

Well. Scrambled eggs were easy enough. Eggs, a bit of milk, salt, pepper, and that was that. The pan was warm and after melting a little pat of butter, Tarin dumped the scrambled mess in there. It was a lot and would take a while to cook, but good lord he was suddenly hungry. Lee was apparently hungry too, and it felt nice to be doing something useful for once.
More spirits were filtering back in and Tarin found himself a bit brooding and resentful about the whole thing. He was used to it, had been used to it, and it wasn’t like they were bothering him, but it still rankled him that they were there. Looking at him. How many of them knew what he had done? A thought occurred to him and he stopped stirring the eggs in the pan for a moment to look around. Had they known the whole time? Could one of them have told him what was going on before it was too late for the women he had brought back here?
It was a horrifying thought, and another stark reminder that they weren’t his friends. They were never going to be his friends. They were self-serving and nasty little bundles of energy that were only ever in it for themselves and what he could do for them.
But. Other Tarin (real Tarin, apparently) had found some use for them.
The eggs needed attention and Tarin cursed a bit, pushing them around so that they wouldn’t burn. He really had made a lot.
Tarin hadn’t asked if Lee wanted her bagel toasted, but went ahead and toasted one of them, deciding that he’d take whichever she didn’t.
Eggs went onto a plate, they weren’t even burnt, bagels went onto a plate, and out Tarin went to the table.
“Oh. We need plates.” he said, heading back to the kitchen and grabbing them, and forks that he somewhat unceremoniously. “Dig in…I guess?”

As TJ was cooking up the eggs, Lee leaned against the other side of the counter, just casually watching him. She had to admit that he seemed to be doing remarkably well today. Functional. Not happy, definitely not, but also didn’t seem to be too depressed or horrified about what had happened.
He was either handling things very well, or it hadn’t hit him yet. And considering what he had said about her being able to compartmentalize things, if Lee had to guess it would be the later option.
He’s going to hate having me around by the time this is all done, she thought. Then frowned as she realized that she didn’t like that idea. Lee was so engrossed in her own thoughts at the moment that she didn’t even notice the way that TJ looked around the shop at what would have appeared to have been nothing.
It didn’t take too much longer after that, and the food was on plates and was being placed on the table. Making her way over as well, Lee laughed slightly when she heard the way that he announced everything was ready? “You guess?” she questioned. Sitting down, she dished some eggs onto her plate and grabbed half of a bagel. “Considering the extent of my cooking ability consists of kids' food, and even then it’s not great, this looks good.”
Lee waited for TJ to dish his own food onto his plate and then started eating. After a minute, she looked up and across the table toward him. “This is good. Thanks.” She continued eating in silence, mostly because she knew he needed to eat; she’d eaten a few times at this point since she had found him in the park.
When her plate was almost empty, she looked over at him again. “Was there anything else that you needed to do today?”

Well. At least the eggs were good.
Tarin sat down in the only other chair that wasn’t broken and took a bite. They were good. He was quiet for a few minutes as he focused on eating. It had been a while, in fact, Tarin wasn’t quite sure when the last time he’d eaten had been. Before he’d gone out Friday night? Yeah, that had to be right.
The spirits were still there. Tarin still kept trying to ignore them, tapping his fork against the plate as their weird presence kept catching the corner of his eye. Why were they so insistent on hanging around?
Why hadn’t any of them said anything to him?
”Was there anything else you wanted to do today?”
Tarin’s head jerked up and he blinked at Lee for a few heartbeats before he shook his head. “I just need to text people to cancel tomorrow.” He was also going to get a new bed, maybe a new table and chairs too…but Lee didn’t need to know that. Why was he canceling tomorrow? “But…you know…maybe I don’t need to cancel.” The remaining eggs and bagel half suddenly just weren’t very appetizing. The fact of the matter was that if he didn’t have clients coming in tomorrow, Tarin was just going to be here by himself trying to figure out what to do with his life.
“You can head on out whenever though. I’m sure you’ve got lots to do.”
